Comedian Cori Gonzalez-Macuer on Getting Fired & Mental Breakdown, How Fatherhood Saved his Life

September 08, 202401:32:41
00:00:06
Curry Gonzalez M M M M M M I've heard
00:00:12
that everyone's been saying it wrong
00:00:13
forever yeah yeah yeah you're okay
00:00:16
you're okay with it it's just too hard
00:00:17
for MC yeah they get the M Gonzalez
00:00:20
should be normal but um I don't even
00:00:23
know how to say MC is M or M I don't
00:00:26
know even my mom doesn't know it's her
00:00:29
name she doesn't even know but also um
00:00:31
something I learned uh Corey is not is
00:00:34
not your real name your your real name's
00:00:36
um Enrique after your dead and and uh so
00:00:40
who who calls you in R uh uh no one just
00:00:43
the
00:00:45
government right so and my passport is
00:00:47
in Rico but um you know I uh when I was
00:00:50
a baby I um got really sick and my
00:00:54
medication was called Cory Don and my
00:00:56
first words were trying to say that but
00:00:58
I just called it Corey and my family
00:01:00
just called me Cory from there on no
00:01:02
one's ever call me in R but from my
00:01:03
teachers or like when I go to ws and
00:01:06
stuff that's so cool so if you ever like
00:01:09
make the the New Zealand hero or stuff
00:01:10
for drunk driving people be like oh this
00:01:12
Enrique Guy must be related to Cory yeah
00:01:15
oh my God older brother or something
00:01:17
like yeah yeah and then when yeah man
00:01:18
he's trouble like he's a the enri guy
00:01:21
that's so cool so it's like a nickname
00:01:23
that's become your official name and all
00:01:25
yeah I I had no choice in it yeah yeah
00:01:28
hey so um this year
00:01:30
uh I don't know if you acknowledg this
00:01:32
as a big year for you but it's your your
00:01:33
21st as a
00:01:35
comedian oh is it yeah is that right
00:01:37
have I got that right coming up 21 21
00:01:39
years stand up Comm yeah oh nice yeah um
00:01:43
no doubt lots of highs lots of lows no
00:01:45
doubt you've done your 10,000 hours best
00:01:46
and worst shows uh best shows the best
00:01:50
shows are always like the all the TV
00:01:53
like the GS those are awesome um you've
00:01:56
got like thousands of people watching
00:01:57
you and you're getting paid a lot of
00:01:59
money for it
00:02:00
um the worst
00:02:02
are just some like shitty towns like
00:02:04
small towns that you go to like they
00:02:07
just don't get you but even even but
00:02:09
even those are like some of the best as
00:02:11
well like I I love I love dying I don't
00:02:13
think there's any better ones I I love
00:02:16
dying is is that something that comes
00:02:18
with confidence the longer you've been
00:02:19
doing it I'm I'm I would imagine like
00:02:21
I'm just projecting here but if it was
00:02:22
me um like dying on stage you'd be in
00:02:26
the in the early stages of your career
00:02:27
it'd be the most mortifying thing ever
00:02:30
struggle to get back on 100% yeah but
00:02:31
yeah but now it's like yeah if I go to a
00:02:33
like a I'm not going to name any towns
00:02:35
but if I go somewhere and it dies I'm
00:02:37
like I'm like I'm better than you guys
00:02:41
so even though I'm I'm actually not but
00:02:43
in my head I'm like like like I'm like
00:02:46
you guys couldn't do this like yeah like
00:02:49
go home and beat your wives like [ __ ]
00:02:51
yeah but when you've been doing it for
00:02:52
21 years I I suppose you realize that um
00:02:55
like dying on stage is not death either
00:02:57
no no I've got other GS yeah that's not
00:02:59
my last yeah yeah you talk so you
00:03:01
mentioned the um the comedy G so I
00:03:04
watched a whole lot of stuff on you
00:03:05
Youtube including um one of the comedy G
00:03:08
shows and there was a joke you told
00:03:09
about um about people having their
00:03:12
fingers in a lot of Pies yeah which is a
00:03:14
saying that everyone says everyone's
00:03:15
familiar with um but i' never ever
00:03:18
thought of it framed that way what is
00:03:20
the um what's the writing Pro process
00:03:22
like how does something like that come
00:03:23
about I don't know I just um literally
00:03:26
just yeah I just I don't understand
00:03:29
where sayings like weird statements like
00:03:32
that like I always like i' got like very
00:03:34
bad OCD and I just put everything into a
00:03:36
little sense and like can you imagine
00:03:38
someone just fingering
00:03:41
pies it's the most absurd saying ever
00:03:44
it's the worst like I don't get it like
00:03:46
yeah I got fingers and pies I was like
00:03:48
what what does that even mean yeah how
00:03:50
did it get like mainstream popularity
00:03:52
that say but um yeah the way you broke
00:03:54
it down it's like it's a saying that's
00:03:55
been around for hundreds of years and
00:03:56
I'd never thought of it that way and I
00:03:57
thought [ __ ] that is good yeah I don't
00:03:59
get it what you got fingers and
00:04:03
pies never a finger in an actual pie
00:04:05
though hey that' be good here for a
00:04:06
podcast fingers and pies yeah you just L
00:04:08
you have to do it while you're fingering
00:04:10
pies let's do it hey you brought some
00:04:11
beers over thanks very much I I actually
00:04:13
sent you a message like about half an
00:04:14
hour ago saying um you know do you want
00:04:16
to drink on arrival I can get you a
00:04:18
coffee I can get you a bottled of water
00:04:20
some beers you said a long black yeah
00:04:22
then as soon as you turned up you said
00:04:24
I'll go next door and get some beers I
00:04:25
just I was driving I was driving here I
00:04:27
saw a lot of people drinking outside in
00:04:28
the sun and I was like oh man that be
00:04:30
that's that looks quite nice yeah oh I
00:04:33
appreciate it I appreciate trying to
00:04:34
stop drinking but you I I heard um
00:04:37
you've been on a few podcasts I listened
00:04:38
to some of them in preparation um for
00:04:41
this and um yeah one of them I think you
00:04:43
you like a 4mth sober at the time yeah I
00:04:46
did SP yeah I did uh I did a 100 days
00:04:49
not drinking and um it was the best I've
00:04:52
ever felt and I don't know why I haven't
00:04:54
done it
00:04:55
again I just can't I I just don't know
00:04:57
how to do it why did you why did you
00:04:59
start again after 100 days
00:05:02
um cuz I gave myself that goal for 100
00:05:05
days and then I went and I I just felt
00:05:09
like I achieved something so I had to
00:05:10
celebrate by drinking which is
00:05:12
ridiculous I I had dry July last year
00:05:15
and I I didn't find it I didn't find it
00:05:17
overly challenging like I wasn't having
00:05:19
physical withdrawals or anything like
00:05:20
that but then for some reason like first
00:05:21
of August yeah I had an absolute Bender
00:05:23
oh yeah yeah what's why the next day I
00:05:26
woke up and I was like full of
00:05:27
self-loathing I was like why did why did
00:05:29
you do that like that's literally every
00:05:31
like I can go like I can go a week or
00:05:33
two without drinking and then yeah at
00:05:35
the end I reward myself by getting
00:05:37
[ __ ] up and I I it's I I just don't
00:05:41
know how to not do that
00:05:44
yeah you've got to yeah yeah it's an
00:05:46
interesting relationship with alcohol we
00:05:47
we'll get to this we'll get to this
00:05:49
later on but you you didn't drink until
00:05:50
you in your early 20s anyway like you
00:05:52
were fit spoker till I was uh uh yeah
00:05:56
2022 F started drinking yeah which I
00:05:59
found hard to believe cuz the what are
00:06:01
your Recollections with the first time
00:06:03
we met cuz we've sort of I I haven't
00:06:04
seen you for years but we've sort of
00:06:06
been social friends on and off for a
00:06:08
long time I think just through I don't
00:06:09
know just through like industry [ __ ]
00:06:11
right yeah like parties yeah you first
00:06:14
time I metet you uh we can cut this out
00:06:16
of the podcast if you want I don't know
00:06:19
um there's a guy called um Duncan hide
00:06:21
he does the afternoon this is by the way
00:06:23
this is a long long time ago this is
00:06:24
probably house yes probably 15 years ago
00:06:27
maybe longer so we're at this house
00:06:29
party maybe 15 20 people there and um a
00:06:32
little puppy when he just got the puppy
00:06:34
yeah like a little Bulldog thing um and
00:06:36
you just uh like turn the turn the
00:06:39
stereo down stood up said hey everybody
00:06:41
um I'm catching up with my drug dealer
00:06:42
in about 40 minutes so if anyone wants
00:06:44
anything let me know and I thought this
00:06:48
guy's [ __ ] H it was alarming because
00:06:50
I I I I mean this is time stamping it I
00:06:53
probably had an ecstasy pill in my
00:06:54
pocket I think most people were going
00:06:56
off to the bathroom and peers doing
00:06:57
drugs but no one was going to be open
00:06:59
about doing drugs and then [ __ ]
00:07:02
stood up and offered to do like like it
00:07:04
was Uber don't [ __ ] around like
00:07:06
seriously um and that drug dealer is in
00:07:08
jail at the moment
00:07:13
so wow yeah yeah I thought that's um
00:07:16
it's a weird sort of like brashness or
00:07:18
confidence or I don't know I just don't
00:07:21
I have no filters I don't think I just
00:07:23
um yeah man like I I don't care yeah
00:07:27
yeah I I like now what's that you get
00:07:30
some drugs
00:07:31
now no I don't do drugs anymore don't
00:07:35
you uh no I don't no okay cool um any
00:07:39
jokes from 21 years ago that you
00:07:41
remember and that you crun at do you
00:07:42
remember your original routine oh bro
00:07:44
like my my first ever um comedy Set uh I
00:07:48
won the raw comedy Quest like the um
00:07:51
like the national like newcomers thing
00:07:53
and uh my closing gag was just I used to
00:07:57
work at a f SHP shop when I was young
00:07:58
and it was me pretending to be um the
00:08:00
Chinese man who I work for and that's
00:08:03
just like the most look back I'm like
00:08:05
how did I not get like cancelled from
00:08:07
that like it's the most I'm glad No One
00:08:09
filmed that because that's the most
00:08:11
offensive thing I've ever done in my
00:08:13
life like so bad but I nailed it yeah
00:08:17
but it wasn't um it wasn't offensive at
00:08:19
the time though no no it it was
00:08:21
literally everyone like my the judges
00:08:24
for my competion was it was like Mike
00:08:25
King like a f nickel like amazing UK
00:08:28
comedian Scott from the classic and they
00:08:31
they all watched it I was like yeah
00:08:34
maybe I should [ __ ] should bring it
00:08:36
back no no you can't bring it back down
00:08:39
all you can do is sit and hope that no
00:08:41
one had like a Nokia with a good
00:08:45
camera that was um what about um you
00:08:48
make lots of jokes about celebrities
00:08:50
have you ever like um ran into one of
00:08:52
the celebrities you've made jokes about
00:08:54
uh funny thing that you should mention
00:08:56
that I do a lot of stuff about uh Paul
00:08:58
Henry I used to do and um he was on
00:09:01
seven days last night and um yeah that
00:09:04
that guy doesn't like me oh what
00:09:06
happened I I had him he was sitting in
00:09:08
that chair like two days ago we did a
00:09:09
podcast I just I just actually I don't
00:09:10
do that many maybe like posts about him
00:09:13
he's just I don't know me just rich
00:09:16
white [ __ ] I just
00:09:17
[ __ ] like uh just so out of touch of
00:09:22
everything yeah I HED up with his
00:09:25
daughter so maybe that's why he doesn't
00:09:26
like oh did you okay well there's
00:09:28
there's history there what about um um
00:09:30
criticism and bad reviews are you are
00:09:33
you okay with them have have you been
00:09:35
have have you had a conflicted
00:09:37
relationship with them over the years
00:09:38
and it's got better or I uh now I can
00:09:40
kind of take it but it just depends who
00:09:42
does it like who's who's doing the
00:09:44
review um some some of them are just
00:09:47
like critics by I mean the name speaks
00:09:49
for itself isn't it they're critical
00:09:50
it's the people who aren't uh like like
00:09:52
comedy review they'll just be like
00:09:54
someone who writes for [ __ ] like
00:09:55
Metro or something and comes to your
00:09:57
show and I'm like like you've never been
00:09:59
to comedy show before like they
00:10:01
criticized me for being having no no
00:10:03
energy or uh being too offensive or
00:10:05
whatever it's like that's just that's
00:10:07
just what I'm like like what do you want
00:10:08
me to be I'm not going to not everyone's
00:10:10
[ __ ] like Jim Carrey or like Billy T
00:10:13
or something you know like but then but
00:10:15
then it's the ones that on like social
00:10:16
media like just normal punters um yeah
00:10:19
man I I I got uh cancel I got cut from
00:10:23
TV3 for like 3 years I'm back there now
00:10:26
um 3 years so I had a uh I did a a post
00:10:29
on on Facebook saying about the
00:10:31
America's Cup AG go um uh anything's
00:10:34
possible if you're a rich white guy and
00:10:37
um I don't hate white people by the way
00:10:41
but and um I'm more fun right now and uh
00:10:45
and this guy from uh Canterbury from
00:10:47
Christ Church he like goes just went off
00:10:49
at me he's like you know was I was like
00:10:52
wasn't like reacting or anything and
00:10:54
then he's like let's sort this out in in
00:10:57
real life like real men and I I was like
00:10:59
okay I found out where he lived and I
00:11:01
was going to be in C that week and I um
00:11:04
sent him my flight details and my hotel
00:11:06
where I was staying at and I was like
00:11:07
let's do us let's do this and then he
00:11:09
called the police and he called TV3 and
00:11:12
uh he got me fired from like three jobs
00:11:14
I had and I dude I tried to call myself
00:11:16
after that and um he um he yeah had 3
00:11:20
years not working on TV after that but
00:11:23
now I'm back and yeah this [ __ ]
00:11:25
his name's Dave something like I'd love
00:11:28
to meet him I'd love to meet him person
00:11:29
man like like that's one guy like I hope
00:11:31
he watches this cuz [ __ ] yeah so yeah
00:11:34
the impact it had on your life it was
00:11:36
that detrimental dude like I I lost like
00:11:39
I lost probably like maybe half a
00:11:41
million bucks of work that year and um
00:11:46
yeah when that happened uh the TV3
00:11:48
called the police to come to my house
00:11:49
cuz I was going to jump off on
00:11:52
balcony you serious yeah yeah yeah how
00:11:55
long ago was this three years ago three
00:11:58
and a bit years ago
00:12:00
oh wow that's a lot yeah you yeah you're
00:12:04
you're um you're you're I was going to
00:12:07
say you're a dead but you're not just a
00:12:08
dead you're you're a bloody great dead
00:12:10
um yeah your daughter fry like she's
00:12:12
she's everything to you we'll get into
00:12:13
the fry part of the story um later but
00:12:16
I've even heard you say in interviews
00:12:17
that she saved your family yeah um yeah
00:12:19
100% And then there's the the your dad
00:12:23
Enrique who will get into who who who
00:12:25
took his own life um yeah so the I mean
00:12:29
the impact that had on you personally as
00:12:32
a as a son losing a parent and the
00:12:34
impact that you saw it had on your white
00:12:35
or family the fact that something could
00:12:37
put you in that point where you do it to
00:12:39
yourself it seems
00:12:41
yeah y yeah it's funny there there's not
00:12:45
a lot of um yeah there's not a lot of
00:12:49
dudy aure with these things he like with
00:12:51
um you know TV3 obviously they had to
00:12:54
make a decision that they thought was
00:12:55
right for them or whatever by you know
00:12:57
um putting on the sidelines for three
00:12:59
years but they still got to look after
00:13:01
the people you can't just I mean they um
00:13:03
can't just cast you aside like a BG
00:13:05
trash they they just sided with this so
00:13:08
This dude he was like a a racist canbury
00:13:11
guy like full on Mega his profile is
00:13:13
like Trump he loves [ __ ] E party he
00:13:18
yeah and they just um they just C of him
00:13:20
and like yeah I I don't get it like yeah
00:13:24
but now yeah a few other the people who
00:13:27
um who stopped me from working they just
00:13:30
got fired in the new color from newth
00:13:32
Hub so shame
00:13:36
[ __ ] what what was it that um that
00:13:38
stopped you from um taking your own
00:13:40
life um I'm scared of
00:13:46
heights I'm I'm I'm the same I'm not
00:13:48
well I'm not scared of heights but I'm
00:13:50
scared of falling from Heights it's no
00:13:52
I'm scar Heights and yeah I live on the
00:13:53
third floor it's quite a big balcony and
00:13:55
um yeah I was like [ __ ] no I okay I'll
00:13:58
do it another way but then but then I
00:14:01
just got yeah I just I don't commit to
00:14:03
[Music]
00:14:05
things yeah
00:14:08
um that's um that's a that would be a
00:14:11
violent way to go I mean there's if you
00:14:12
thing there's only going to be one
00:14:14
outcome that's not a cry for help that's
00:14:16
someone that wants a team yeah yeah it's
00:14:17
a teen and yeah no if I did I'd just
00:14:20
yeah I I got a Wy bar and
00:14:24
just I don't know cut that drink
00:14:27
yourself into Oblivion I'm I'm I'm
00:14:30
pleased that work that okay and I'm
00:14:31
pleased you're still here yeah thank you
00:14:33
yeah um all right let's go
00:14:36
um I've got a bunch of cards in
00:14:38
different chapters yeah
00:14:42
opra they got reallyand opra really um
00:14:46
God I wouldn't mind wouldn't mind some
00:14:47
of that open for money oh man yeah how
00:14:49
do what how do you feel about rich brown
00:14:51
people hey good on them but the same as
00:14:54
I mean she's
00:14:55
yeah all right um yeah the next C I had
00:14:59
was about some of the screen stuff so
00:15:01
you've been in heaps over the years um
00:15:03
was your first um on screen experience
00:15:06
being um Adrien Brody's body double yeah
00:15:09
yeah on King Kong yeah so you're in
00:15:11
Wellington at the time you're still at
00:15:13
University or are you young yeah I was
00:15:14
at Uni yeah yeah yeah um yeah I went to
00:15:18
audition I don't know how you audition
00:15:20
to be a body double just went on and uh
00:15:22
they just take photos of you and um and
00:15:25
I just watched him on the on the penist
00:15:27
and he just won the Oscar that year and
00:15:29
my whole family loved him and we were
00:15:31
like he was coming to New Zealand to do
00:15:32
we knew that he was coming to do kung
00:15:34
Kong and everyone was like oh imagine if
00:15:35
you can work with him and then I got the
00:15:38
yeah got that part and um yeah it turned
00:15:40
out to be a dick oh really really or did
00:15:43
you have like much to do with him
00:15:44
personally I I was with him whenever he
00:15:46
was on set I was on set so we hang out
00:15:49
every day for what like a year that we
00:15:51
filmed it why was he a dick uh he's just
00:15:54
real arrogant right yeah but um I don't
00:15:57
know like
00:16:00
I might be the same if I'm ever that
00:16:01
famous if I w't Oscar I probably I
00:16:03
wouldn't be here I know I don't know
00:16:05
I've I've known you for a long time yeah
00:16:08
yeah I've seen seen you through some
00:16:10
like career highs and careers career
00:16:11
lows and you never sort of change yeah I
00:16:14
guess so yeah I know but yeah but he was
00:16:16
um any any specific dickish moments or
00:16:20
um just a general ER of arrogance or
00:16:23
yeah just like stories that I heard from
00:16:25
I was really good friends with um Jamie
00:16:28
Bell who who used to be he was Billy
00:16:30
Elliott and he was in the movie and um
00:16:32
they went away apparently for a weekend
00:16:33
in Queenstown and one of the guys uh
00:16:36
Colin Hanks his mom had just died and um
00:16:40
was a real like s moment and one of the
00:16:43
uh other actors in it he was a opera
00:16:45
singer and he set up and did like a
00:16:47
apparently amazing like opera song for
00:16:49
him and then everyone's like that's
00:16:50
amazing everyone's crying and then out
00:16:52
of nowhere ad b gets up and starts
00:16:54
repping so that just sums it up he's not
00:16:58
a com actor so there's no sense of
00:17:00
timing maybe no no yeah exactly yeah
00:17:02
yeah time fck your moments you know what
00:17:05
about um Jack Black was in that movie
00:17:06
you have anything to do with him oh he
00:17:07
was the man yeah the nicest guy ever
00:17:10
like seriously we um yeah awesome and
00:17:14
um yeah he had time for everyone just I
00:17:17
couldn't say anything more words about
00:17:20
him how nice he was yeah that was
00:17:21
probably the peak of his Fame as well
00:17:22
like you wanted to talk Adrian broy
00:17:24
being a big star Jack Black was a big
00:17:25
star like that was uh so School of Rock
00:17:27
here he just come out and then he that
00:17:29
and the Tenacious D stuff with yeah so
00:17:31
they played they played uh we went to
00:17:33
see them like yeah was awesome yeah that
00:17:37
that would have been about the time of
00:17:37
year tribute was a really big song and
00:17:39
yeah just come out yeah actually that
00:17:40
whole album like fucku gently is one of
00:17:42
my favorite songs and Lee's like oh so
00:17:46
good yeah that's King Kong and then um
00:17:48
eagle versus shark in
00:17:50
2007 uh yeah oh actually yeah we it came
00:17:54
out in 2007 but we filmed it in 2004 I
00:17:57
think 2005 yeah is that is that where
00:18:00
you and um Germaine Clement sort of
00:18:02
became yeah so me and um uh tuer and
00:18:06
Germaine they were and the the like the
00:18:08
Concords were around and terer was he
00:18:10
was one of the judges in the first go
00:18:11
did um and they um asked me to be in
00:18:15
this short film which turned out to be
00:18:17
what we know Shadows um then after that
00:18:20
um yeah I did eagle with a shark with
00:18:22
tiger in Germain and yeah it was awesome
00:18:26
awesome yeah that was a that was a fck
00:18:27
Wellington was a hot of talent of Comedy
00:18:30
Talent Jesus everyone's from there like
00:18:33
dley Steve rley
00:18:35
um me um Raybon everyone you can't I
00:18:41
suppose um you can't help but have some
00:18:42
of that sort of success rub off on your
00:18:44
way if you're in that circle like it's
00:18:45
going to it's going to drive you or you
00:18:48
push you to be better and do better so
00:18:50
that um but so when you came along 20 21
00:18:52
years ago had the Concords was that pre
00:18:55
the HBO show or were they just about to
00:18:57
do the HBO show pre so when I when I
00:19:01
start they they just like cracked it in
00:19:03
uh Edinburgh like Edinburgh festival and
00:19:05
um they were huge in Wellington like
00:19:08
every time they played it we me and Ben
00:19:10
hully ran the comedy club there they
00:19:12
every time they come it would just be
00:19:13
Shu and pecked um and then they went to
00:19:17
they went to America they did a pilot
00:19:19
which they filmed at in Wellington at
00:19:21
our Comedy Club um that didn't get
00:19:23
picked up but then they did their HBO
00:19:26
special like the year after that and
00:19:27
then they became like M like massive
00:19:30
like ridiculous how big they they be
00:19:32
that series is so good oh so good it's
00:19:34
just brilliant and they could have kept
00:19:35
it going but they were like no do other
00:19:37
stuff yeah I I love that and I hate it
00:19:39
as well from a fan perspective I hate it
00:19:41
but I can't so they did two seasons of
00:19:43
that was it two I can't imagine how yeah
00:19:46
I'm I'm in a of that second season the
00:19:48
first season obviously they had like a
00:19:49
like a backlog of songs which you could
00:19:51
wedge into story lines but create
00:19:53
writing new songs and writing story
00:19:55
lines around it yeah exactly yeah can't
00:19:58
imagine how how crazy a time that was um
00:20:01
and then um what we doing in the shadows
00:20:03
so that was like
00:20:04
2012 uh yeah we filmed in 2012 yeah yeah
00:20:07
I I watched that last night it was I had
00:20:09
to get on Apple and rent it for like
00:20:10
$5.99 dude I've got a link oh no I
00:20:14
wasn't going to I was going to DM you
00:20:16
hey bro I can I can read it for 599 but
00:20:18
do you have a Vimeo link there's enough
00:20:20
YouTube clip that you can actually cut
00:20:22
them together and probably get a idea
00:20:24
about what it's about so the um the 5.99
00:20:27
that I spent on April last night
00:20:29
do you do you get a royalty or anything
00:20:30
or did you just get a you just get a a
00:20:32
check at the time we yeah I think we do
00:20:34
like we I got a some royalties uh two
00:20:37
years ago they meant to come every year
00:20:39
so I don't know what's happening but
00:20:40
yeah just [ __ ] all day uh no it wasn't
00:20:44
too bad like it's it's it's become
00:20:45
massive like over the world it's become
00:20:47
massive so I wasn't to I think I think I
00:20:50
got like n grand for one year and then
00:20:54
nothing else since inide me oh [ __ ] on
00:20:57
nine grand that's good [ __ ] it's it's a
00:20:58
great movie I I forgot I haven't seen it
00:21:00
since it came out I forgot how good it
00:21:01
was yeah I haven't I watch it been
00:21:03
watching with Freddy a little bit and to
00:21:04
yeah it's I'm remembering it it's it's a
00:21:06
good movie yeah so so you're one of the
00:21:08
core cast you're Nick who plays like a a
00:21:10
newly minted um young sort of cocky
00:21:13
arrogant vampire you come in like 22
00:21:15
minutes into it um yep there'll be a lot
00:21:19
of people that watching watching this or
00:21:20
listening to this podcast that haven't
00:21:21
seen it or haven't seen it in years but
00:21:23
I got a couple of like geeky fan
00:21:25
questions um some of the straet scenes
00:21:28
are they are they extras or was it sort
00:21:31
of like hidden camera style uh a lot of
00:21:33
hidden camera and then a lot of the
00:21:35
extras were people that were just when
00:21:37
we went out we're like hey do you mind
00:21:38
just being in this kind of in the shot
00:21:40
it's amazing yeah oh there was no budget
00:21:42
so like we couldn't pay for that many
00:21:43
extras like we from like all the courney
00:21:45
place in we can't yeah yeah yeah it's
00:21:49
like massive C you know Jermaine and and
00:21:51
taer but they weren't you know Jermaine
00:21:52
and taer then they were yeah yeah you
00:21:54
know um and when when you're filming a
00:21:57
funny movie does it make it a funny set
00:21:59
to be on or not necessarily that was uh
00:22:01
the funniest um six weeks of my life
00:22:05
like every day was just like ridiculous
00:22:07
just the funniest moment like yeah but
00:22:10
oh I don't I don't know of there like
00:22:13
any sets that could have that ever like
00:22:16
that was so good and and what was the
00:22:19
like some of the scenes almost look
00:22:21
um almost like I don't know if I'm
00:22:23
phrasing this right but like ad lied
00:22:25
rather than acted like so did you have
00:22:27
like a strict script or like a loose
00:22:29
script I never saw a
00:22:30
script I never saw the script ever yeah
00:22:34
no one did Tu and Germain had the script
00:22:36
but I never showed it to anyone what do
00:22:38
you mean the whole movie was
00:22:41
improvised so so they had some like beat
00:22:44
bullet points yeah bullet points but
00:22:46
then yeah like um I think we filmed like
00:22:49
145 hours or something 125 hours and
00:22:52
it's like 120 Minutes or something yeah
00:22:55
um n script yeah all like um literally
00:22:58
all
00:23:00
[ __ ] so they they they literally just
00:23:02
shot a whole lot of stuff and just P
00:23:04
yeah have like three different visions
00:23:06
of the movie from the stuff that they
00:23:08
cut yeah and it's it's that's brilliant
00:23:11
too it's really good and then um yeah
00:23:12
something I forgot about completely or
00:23:14
it just never occurred to me it was like
00:23:16
a today I learned moment um Wellington
00:23:19
paranormal which was also very
00:23:20
successful that was like a spin-off of
00:23:22
what we doing the Shadows yeah yeah it's
00:23:25
um yeah it's it's my daughter's favorite
00:23:28
TV show which is awesome um so I yeah I
00:23:32
worked on it I was in it in the first
00:23:33
season and then I wrote the second and
00:23:35
third season and um yeah it's one of
00:23:40
also one of the best jobs I've ever had
00:23:41
yeah it's incredible how how did you how
00:23:43
did you um get the job what we doing the
00:23:45
shads we did you Did you sort of have to
00:23:47
audition did tyer and Jermaine sort of
00:23:49
like put you forward did they just
00:23:51
invite you to be in it no so we did a we
00:23:53
did a short film of it in 2004 uh that
00:23:56
we sent to some festivals and um um then
00:23:59
Taco's like oh this is kind of a lot of
00:24:01
people into this they want to make it
00:24:02
into a movie um and we'll keep you on
00:24:05
when it happens and then so for like 8
00:24:07
years he's like every time I see him hey
00:24:09
man it's going to happen we're going to
00:24:10
do it and they just they kept everyone
00:24:12
from the short film in the cast like
00:24:14
they just put put us on into the main
00:24:16
movie amazing and how's um how how's
00:24:20
your relationship with taer change it
00:24:22
can't be the same now it's like he's
00:24:24
well he's hard to get in touch with but
00:24:26
um you you're you're living in Eden ter
00:24:28
he's got like a $20 million
00:24:30
mans and in La as well um when he's here
00:24:34
we we'll catch up but
00:24:36
um he's not that hard like yeah we text
00:24:40
and stuff and but when he's here we'll
00:24:42
catch up but he's he's the buzziest guy
00:24:45
in the world yeah he's got a million
00:24:46
he's got so many fingers and so many
00:24:48
pies every
00:24:50
way he's literally the guy who's got
00:24:53
fingers in pie yeah like literally
00:24:54
literally but you after he's had his
00:24:56
finger in a pie you'd eat that pie yeah
00:24:58
my God yeah and his fingers yeah
00:25:01
um yeah that movie was so successful you
00:25:04
ended up going like you had a free trip
00:25:06
around the world Alex Sundance Film
00:25:08
Festival so what what's the Sundance
00:25:09
Film Festival oh man it's uh so it's
00:25:11
like
00:25:12
a like a kind of independent movie
00:25:15
Showcase uh Robert rff started it um oh
00:25:18
because of Butch castley in the Sundance
00:25:20
Kid maybe from that yeah right yeah yeah
00:25:22
actually yeah okay and um yeah you just
00:25:25
we got flown over there we stayed there
00:25:27
for like 2 weeks it was just like it
00:25:31
wasn't real life like and then after
00:25:32
that we went to LA then Berlin like dude
00:25:35
it was like it was a month of just not
00:25:37
real
00:25:39
life like ridiculous what what do you do
00:25:42
over there why do they fly all you guys
00:25:43
who F who flew over like the entire sort
00:25:45
ofast everyone yeah yeah like
00:25:47
us uh taer
00:25:50
Jermain Reby me Stu Johnny BR um Jackie
00:25:55
like
00:25:56
everyone and and what to do there like
00:25:59
are you working over there no we just
00:26:01
went and did like interviews and we went
00:26:02
to like like um like a swag meet where
00:26:05
you going in and they L just clothes and
00:26:07
shoes everywhere and they they just swag
00:26:09
stuff we all get and they they yeah they
00:26:11
tell you just pick what what you want
00:26:14
and like we went and got like I've got
00:26:15
so much stuff from there I still have it
00:26:16
like like I've got like thousands of
00:26:19
dollars worth of stuff like a Nintendo
00:26:21
Wii like what the hell you know like who
00:26:24
I'm who am I I'm I'm still on the
00:26:25
benefit of New Zealand what am I doing
00:26:27
here like but also you I I was going to
00:26:30
say why do they give all this free stuff
00:26:32
to people that can afford it but yeah I
00:26:34
was like yeah everyone else was like cuz
00:26:36
yeah I think before us um who's it oh uh
00:26:40
y McGregor was there before us and he's
00:26:43
just like just walks past and I'm like
00:26:44
you didn't take any of it
00:26:47
like I was like hey bro this is free
00:26:49
yeah that's all free you spot the newly
00:26:51
minted
00:26:52
sleep hey those shoes you can take those
00:26:56
for youy terer if you're not going to
00:26:57
have a wake yeah yeah oh wow well were
00:27:01
you the were you the thirstiest person
00:27:02
in the in the swag room 100% I took
00:27:05
everything I brought stuff home for my
00:27:07
family like like girl stuff I was like
00:27:10
yeah let's take it and you you um
00:27:12
mentioned you and McGregor anyone else
00:27:13
did do you got any parties or anything
00:27:15
what yeah went to a lot of parties uh we
00:27:17
had Jak J hall came to our shadows party
00:27:21
um Selena Gomez Nick Cave wow Joy
00:27:25
mangelo whatever his name is um
00:27:29
yeah [ __ ] that's an impressive list and
00:27:31
do you um do you you manage to say stay
00:27:34
chill around these people uh I don't
00:27:36
know yeah yeah I can't remember probably
00:27:39
not that's cool and then um then you
00:27:42
where where else did you go Berlin from
00:27:44
there we went to back to LA to just kind
00:27:46
of Jo I did some shows in LA and then we
00:27:49
went to the Berlin festival and and that
00:27:51
was bit more lowkey but but but huge
00:27:55
like in Berlin is my favorite city in
00:27:57
the world now like
00:27:59
it's a cool place he yeah it's so cool I
00:28:02
love it like yeah I'd love there [ __ ]
00:28:04
that's awesome memories for a lifetime
00:28:05
eh yeah yeah so [ __ ] cool so how do
00:28:08
you um yeah how do you do that and then
00:28:10
like you know come back to you know come
00:28:12
back to your flat in [ __ ] Kingsland
00:28:14
no no I came back to when I was living
00:28:16
in Wellington it was just s on my dad
00:28:17
died so I went it was just me and my mom
00:28:19
living in an apartment and Wellington
00:28:20
came back back on the
00:28:22
benefit um actually actually on the
00:28:25
benefit yeah and uh I've been telling
00:28:27
everyone how doing this movie and it's
00:28:29
coming out and everyone was like oh yeah
00:28:30
whatever Cory whatever so I was like
00:28:32
I've got this movie coming out and I've
00:28:34
got no money coming in but you know and
00:28:37
did did you did you guys sense it was
00:28:39
going to be a big movie or I mean going
00:28:41
to these festivals and stuff you must
00:28:43
have felt like a sort of hum around it
00:28:45
um yeah from there but even even then we
00:28:48
were like maybe it'll it'll come out at
00:28:50
like Realto and newal like maybe it'll
00:28:53
be just like in a like Indie movie
00:28:55
festival or something but yeah we had no
00:28:56
idea that it would be like
00:28:58
like a massive worldwide success we had
00:29:00
no idea that's so cool what a cool thing
00:29:03
to be a part of yeah okay so let's get
00:29:06
back to the early years so you're um
00:29:07
you're Chilean so you're born in Chile
00:29:09
you moved to New Zealand when you sex
00:29:10
what are you what do you remember from
00:29:12
the I was trying to think about this
00:29:13
when I was um pring for this interview
00:29:16
and my memories of my first six years
00:29:17
and these like sort of like flashes of
00:29:19
different buts and buts and pieces but
00:29:21
[ __ ] all really what are you remember
00:29:22
from um [ __ ] so we grew up in a war so I
00:29:26
remember lot of heavy [ __ ] and
00:29:29
um just my grandparents uh so my dad
00:29:32
left Chile when I was four I think uh to
00:29:35
come come here to set up a life um so I
00:29:39
remember him leaving that was real sad
00:29:41
and um then it was just me my mom and my
00:29:42
little brother and my grandparents and
00:29:45
um yeah there was just a big a war at
00:29:48
the time and going like every time we
00:29:50
went out remember my uncle getting like
00:29:52
arrested and tortured um us going out
00:29:55
getting shot at when we like every time
00:29:56
we'd go out like te I got tear big ass
00:29:58
when I was 4 years old
00:30:00
um yeah like having family members get
00:30:03
like [ __ ] killed and stuff like
00:30:07
yeah but apart from that uh from that a
00:30:10
lot of
00:30:12
football but is is it is that terrifying
00:30:14
as a kid or if you're born into a war is
00:30:16
it just like oh well you know it was it
00:30:18
was
00:30:19
just it literally was just life it's
00:30:21
like that's why like these days I'm like
00:30:23
that's why I don't care about much cuz
00:30:25
like I grew up seeing horrible things
00:30:28
and horrible things happening to my
00:30:30
family and yeah I just I just I'm
00:30:33
reckless I just I just people are so
00:30:36
lucky to live here M and and all your
00:30:38
family lived in a a garage yeah or me
00:30:41
and my mom and my dad and my brother
00:30:44
loved in the garage of my grandparents
00:30:46
garage right yeah is this a Chilean
00:30:47
thing just family loves together family
00:30:50
I went back there a few years ago and
00:30:51
like my uncle who's like 60 he's still
00:30:53
living there
00:30:55
like it just H as no one no one s moves
00:30:58
no I don't like even like here in New
00:30:59
Zealand when I when I went flatting I
00:31:01
think I was 21 at the time um I left
00:31:04
home my dad didn't talk to me for a
00:31:06
month cuz he's like why would he leave
00:31:08
us he literally stopped talking to me
00:31:10
for a month he was so angry at me that I
00:31:11
went flatting like at that point your
00:31:14
dead must have been thinking you know
00:31:15
okay moving to New Zealand was the best
00:31:17
thing we did for our kids but also the
00:31:19
worst thing CU now
00:31:21
learned he always just wanted us to be
00:31:23
together the whole time and I was like
00:31:26
man it's um
00:31:28
it's it's lovely though way it's really
00:31:30
endearing I mean
00:31:32
it's it's awesome and like like this
00:31:35
like if my mom lived I'd
00:31:38
love yeah you s see that with um I don't
00:31:41
know there's like parallels between that
00:31:43
the Chilean lifestyle in the you know a
00:31:45
lot of the Pacifica um you families
00:31:48
whereas um you know pakia like me like
00:31:51
we get to 178 then you start plotting
00:31:53
your move then once you're done it's
00:31:55
like go to radio station or something
00:31:57
yeah yeah did you start P me yeah yeah
00:31:59
yeah [ __ ] it's funny I love that that's
00:32:02
that's really cool you're still really
00:32:03
close with your mom now you call every
00:32:05
day twice my best friend yeah talk to
00:32:07
her at least twice a day yeah one of the
00:32:09
other days is yeah one of the so call in
00:32:11
the morning after I dropped Freddy off
00:32:13
and then when I go pick Freddy up from
00:32:15
school I I just call her so the other
00:32:17
parents won't talk to
00:32:19
me you always on a phone yeah I yeah and
00:32:22
even when she's busy I'll put them on
00:32:23
the
00:32:24
phone oh that's cool what's she doing
00:32:26
there she's she's doing Wellington so
00:32:28
Wellington so she uh was working at The
00:32:31
Body Shop she worked there for like 30
00:32:32
years she got made redundant two years
00:32:34
ago um didn't know what was happening
00:32:37
her dog died everything was tough but um
00:32:40
she got a new dog and she's got a new
00:32:42
job working for the government she's
00:32:43
like she's calling it awesome yeah um
00:32:46
and what are your memories of moving to
00:32:47
New Zealand at six uh I
00:32:50
remember you couldn't speak any English
00:32:52
eh no English yeah I FL into Wellington
00:32:54
just remember how windy it
00:32:56
was um um
00:32:59
and yeah remember Wy and gray but
00:33:04
um yeah I I like I don't speak any
00:33:07
English but I just I don't remember the
00:33:09
part where I didn't speak English like I
00:33:11
picked it up and like quite quickly I
00:33:13
think and yeah so yeah things like that
00:33:16
are easy for kids I guess what about
00:33:18
your parents did they struggle uh yeah
00:33:21
they my mom's my mom's good my dad
00:33:24
struggled up until he died like but he
00:33:26
was yeah he was just uh kind of like
00:33:29
Antonio mandas had a really good accent
00:33:31
so he got away with it I see he sounds
00:33:34
like Puss and Boots yeah literally
00:33:36
literally pussing boots that's literally
00:33:39
what he talked like like amazing what
00:33:42
what was his uh what was his career in
00:33:44
Chile and what did he do so in Chile he
00:33:46
was uh he studied to be um
00:33:51
agriculturist and uh an economist and
00:33:54
then he came here and he couldn't get
00:33:56
job cuz he couldn't speak English
00:33:58
um so he was just a he cleaned toilets
00:33:59
for
00:34:00
like 15 years cleaned toilets painted
00:34:03
houses and then finally he got a job
00:34:05
from with his degree and he became like
00:34:07
a big Economist for um the New Zealand
00:34:10
uh Meat Company meat Foundation meat and
00:34:13
lamb
00:34:15
yeah [ __ ] you hear so many suc success
00:34:18
stories like that about immigrants eh
00:34:20
it's like they're starting completely on
00:34:23
Ground Zero like I can't imagine many
00:34:24
things more challenging than moving to a
00:34:26
new country where you can't speak the
00:34:27
language yeah and um basically being
00:34:29
stripped of all ego all previous
00:34:31
identity everything like that he's like
00:34:33
he was the smartest man in the world
00:34:34
like he was smarter than everyone like I
00:34:36
just yeah was what were you like as a
00:34:38
kid I know you were really good at
00:34:39
soccer or football were you were you
00:34:41
funny or theatrical n not really
00:34:46
um well that's thought was funny that's
00:34:49
that's a lie I I've heard that you um
00:34:51
were obsessed with ins sync oh that was
00:34:54
when I was like 19 okay okay and I still
00:34:59
wasn't haven't we canceled Justin Tim
00:35:01
Lake because he got done yeah yeah yeah
00:35:03
yeah but apparently he only had he only
00:35:05
had one drink have you seen that come
00:35:07
had one drink but he was like very aware
00:35:09
of how his driving did he think he's he
00:35:11
was he was doing coke like he's just he
00:35:14
was he was like I'm very aware of how
00:35:16
I'm driving like dude your eyes are like
00:35:18
he's like talking about starting a
00:35:20
podcast he on
00:35:21
cocaine so oh yeah so yeah so just
00:35:24
sporty kid when you were little yeah
00:35:26
just Sports was all just football
00:35:28
um you're real good he I I heard you
00:35:30
real good yeah I played
00:35:32
for um yeah reps played for when
00:35:35
overseas and played I was like uh junior
00:35:38
all white stuff like that trials um yeah
00:35:42
that was that's why I never drank my
00:35:44
whole life till I was like
00:35:45
22 um yeah still to this day I'm 42 now
00:35:49
I still think I could make the all
00:35:51
whites well you could probably make the
00:35:53
Phoenix at
00:35:55
least so what you why didn't you start
00:35:58
um you why didn't you start drinking
00:36:01
like um you know when you were 17 18 19
00:36:03
when all you I was just focused on
00:36:05
Sports like never yeah and yeah I just
00:36:08
want to yeah my friends were partying I
00:36:11
went home before a game like I just yeah
00:36:13
never interested me and now complete
00:36:17
opposite now but I tell myself that I'm
00:36:19
making up for not drinking when I was
00:36:20
young oh you've more than made up for it
00:36:23
you're doing very well just goes to
00:36:25
prove that whatever you apply yourself
00:36:27
at you do very he well I'm very good at
00:36:28
drinking and um oh god oh no you're a
00:36:31
good dude were you um did you were you
00:36:34
quite popular you have any friends or
00:36:36
were you sort of a
00:36:37
loner um don't know if I was a loner I
00:36:39
wasn't I was just kind of just not
00:36:41
really anything I was just yeah I wasn't
00:36:44
definitely not one of the cool guys um
00:36:48
yeah I just hang out with all the other
00:36:49
immigrants M all my friends were all
00:36:51
like Iraqis or Filipinos and my school
00:36:55
was very my school was very um I was
00:36:57
probably the Wiest sky in my high school
00:36:59
so wow SS like a real diverse school
00:37:01
though yeah St Pat town is [ __ ] yeah
00:37:04
awesome a lot of good people came from
00:37:05
there like Jerry Collins [ __ ] rest in
00:37:08
peace yeah um and no sort of no sort of
00:37:11
like racism
00:37:12
or or comments about being an immigrant
00:37:15
or anything oh when I was oh me yeah
00:37:17
yeah definitely not not from school but
00:37:19
just just general life like and with my
00:37:21
family as well like like getting told to
00:37:23
yeah go back home [ __ ] that's a that's a
00:37:27
cheapest law I know like come on dude
00:37:29
growing up I was yeah and and especially
00:37:32
in Primary School like me and my little
00:37:35
brother got hassled a lot for being
00:37:37
immigrants and and then we um yeah we
00:37:40
just we'd [ __ ] them
00:37:43
up like me and my my brother we love to
00:37:45
fight when we growing up like we
00:37:46
literally just
00:37:49
yeah when was the last well when was the
00:37:51
last time you got in a
00:37:52
fight um or at least got punched through
00:37:56
a punch I got kned out about um maybe a
00:37:59
year and a half ago where abouts um Pon
00:38:03
I don't really know what happened but
00:38:05
like by like three dudes I don't know
00:38:06
what
00:38:08
happened I probably said something I
00:38:10
don't know and then um yeah got um I
00:38:12
don't get knocked out they just punch me
00:38:13
and I fell
00:38:15
down there's um listen to some podcast
00:38:17
there's um there's a story of H tell a
00:38:19
couple of times about going to Thailand
00:38:21
and um there some like kickboxing
00:38:23
competition where like it's almost like
00:38:26
an amateur amateur of a comedy show
00:38:28
where open Mark for for kickboxing
00:38:31
kickboxing yeah like a really high risk
00:38:33
G tonight and if you take P you get like
00:38:35
a bucket of beers or something you get a
00:38:37
bucket of a like a cocktail which is
00:38:40
just pretty much like
00:38:42
ethanol with like a cucumber in it and
00:38:45
you got stitched up like you they we
00:38:48
ordered I was there like five of my
00:38:50
mates and we we've heard about the
00:38:51
underground cook Boxing Club in PP
00:38:53
Island and we have to do it and we all
00:38:55
went and we' all we' all kind of done
00:38:57
some kind of like training or fighting
00:38:59
before in New Zealand and we felt
00:39:01
confident and then um they put us all up
00:39:03
against like actual Fighters and um and
00:39:06
Me Against like a K1 fighter we find out
00:39:08
at the end afterwards and we all got
00:39:11
knocked the [ __ ] out I got knocked out
00:39:15
twice when you say you done training in
00:39:17
New Zealand yeah like not even training
00:39:19
I just went to maybe AO class box
00:39:21
classes yeah you do do that do
00:39:25
that that's out just let that happen
00:39:28
it's crazy dude it's still going like
00:39:30
people still do it it's yeah but so was
00:39:33
so fun but it's terrible but I yeah I
00:39:37
feel like even when I'm drinking
00:39:39
irresponsibly I never sort of get myself
00:39:41
in those sort of positions but you you
00:39:42
do and subsequently you end up with good
00:39:44
stories for podcast 10 years later yeah
00:39:48
yeah I so what happened in pby a year
00:39:50
and a half ago you just drun and you got
00:39:52
smack to someone or yeah I think so yeah
00:39:54
yeah yeah not that not that VI ever the
00:39:58
ever the way but yeah no yeah um oh yeah
00:40:01
I when did you get into the boy band
00:40:02
stuff so yeah you loved Michael Jackson
00:40:05
Michael Jackson uh so my top five uh
00:40:07
Michael Jackson Sublime Rob Zombie uh
00:40:11
guns and roses
00:40:14
and
00:40:16
slipnot it's a real different ends of
00:40:19
the spe man I love everything yeah yeah
00:40:22
and and Wast life as well which I he
00:40:24
that's that's because your dad my dad
00:40:26
love W life yeah yeah um what did you
00:40:28
want to do for a career back then uh
00:40:30
I've always wanted to be a journalist
00:40:32
always be a writer or a
00:40:34
journalist that would have worked out
00:40:36
well for you a journalist there there's
00:40:38
a there's a real shortage of
00:40:43
work I heard news Hub was
00:40:45
hiring um and then when did you discover
00:40:48
like um yeah comedy and drinking and T
00:40:51
what what Drew you to that um
00:40:54
so my
00:40:57
girlfriend's friend was dating uh Ben
00:41:00
Hurley when I was at Uni and um he had a
00:41:03
like the the open m the uh newcomers
00:41:05
competition happening and I told him
00:41:07
that I was like I was drunk I was like
00:41:08
Hey Aran I'm funnier than all you guys
00:41:10
and um and he's like well come do the
00:41:13
competition and then I won it so yeah
00:41:15
that's it did how much were you scared
00:41:19
oh dude I I threw up so much beforehand
00:41:23
and I never um smoked a cigarette before
00:41:25
in my life till that night I got a pack
00:41:26
of cigarettes before smoked it and then
00:41:29
went on stage and yeah it was awesome
00:41:32
the yeah how much how much preparation
00:41:34
went into it uh quite a lot how many
00:41:37
minutes uh I think we had to do five
00:41:40
right yeah that's a long that's a long
00:41:43
yeah I mean a lot of people listen to
00:41:46
this the extent of the public speaking
00:41:48
they've done is probably like the
00:41:49
prepared speech that you have to do in
00:41:50
school for 1 minute 2 minutes 3 minutes
00:41:52
whatever 5 minutes standing out there
00:41:54
trying to make people laugh it's
00:41:55
terrifying yeah I was still Tero I do I
00:41:58
do like one I've done an hour 20 before
00:42:00
that's that's yeah but you've got so
00:42:02
many hours under your belt now like you
00:42:04
you know what's going to you know you
00:42:06
know what's going to work first you've
00:42:09
got lines that you know are going to get
00:42:10
you out of trouble and yeah but you you
00:42:13
must
00:42:15
have I suppose like you're Style on
00:42:17
stage now like um you like you so um
00:42:20
still like you could rest a book on your
00:42:22
head yeah like um so I suppose even when
00:42:25
you're nervous you don't look nervous
00:42:28
yeah it's just that's just it's my face
00:42:30
it's just yeah my whole style is what
00:42:32
I'm like in real life I guess yeah I'm
00:42:35
always nous you be yeah I'm just trying
00:42:36
to think of what you were like in that
00:42:37
first comedy G and I suppose it was
00:42:38
quite captivating to watch was it sort
00:42:40
of on liners or was it stories or one
00:42:42
liners always yeah I've never done
00:42:43
stories really yeah all one lers and uh
00:42:47
making fun of my girlfriend at the time
00:42:48
and she ran out
00:42:51
crying Aya love you and
00:42:54
uh and then we had so
00:42:57
I had to go see her outside and she was
00:42:59
crying she's calling me a dick and then
00:43:02
I get called from the bar saying Cory
00:43:03
You've Won I'm
00:43:05
like got go
00:43:09
inside did you well did you not um like
00:43:12
rehearse in front of her or anything did
00:43:14
she not know she literally encouraged me
00:43:16
to do
00:43:17
that she she wrote half my set like you
00:43:21
knew I was going to do that oh was not
00:43:23
Happ that when people laughed
00:43:28
it's not that funny what was it what did
00:43:31
you say about it um I said I can't
00:43:33
remember what it
00:43:34
was I think I don't know I something
00:43:38
maybe I called her a [ __ ] or something
00:43:39
I don't
00:43:40
know it sounds like you had lived yeah
00:43:43
but no but she told me just say that
00:43:44
she's like my girlfriend's here [ __ ]
00:43:47
something or my girlfriend wrote this
00:43:48
[ __ ] something like that so is this the
00:43:51
is this the the night where like M who
00:43:53
was the judge Mike King uh no that night
00:43:55
was uh uh I think taer and Jesse
00:44:00
Mulligan and Hy I
00:44:03
think
00:44:05
wow yeah [ __ ] that three um three three
00:44:10
people that have gone on to have
00:44:11
impressive careers yeah
00:44:14
[ __ ] and that so um is that that the
00:44:17
first time you met
00:44:18
tiger um y yeah first time met him was
00:44:21
that Mar show
00:44:23
yeah so I suppose from that time he
00:44:25
thought this this how do we the like 21
00:44:27
22 uh 21 right he must thought okay this
00:44:31
this guy's this guy's got something good
00:44:33
did did they s sort of become like any
00:44:35
of those guys become so mentals at that
00:44:37
point or not really uh definitely hully
00:44:39
yeah um and Mulligan as well like we're
00:44:42
all like yeah us three maybe Wrigley
00:44:45
Steve Wrigley um but definitely Hurley
00:44:47
me and Hurley um he he's the reason I'm
00:44:50
I'm comedian we live together he's um
00:44:53
yeah he's a piece of [ __ ] but I love him
00:44:58
yeah all all comedians are pieces of
00:45:01
[ __ ] in their own everyone's a piece of
00:45:03
[ __ ] why why is he why would you say
00:45:04
he's a piece of [ __ ] um it's just a way
00:45:06
of saying that I love them right yeah
00:45:09
yeah you can't say it without say insult
00:45:11
insult the compliment no I got no no bad
00:45:13
things to say but him he's um yeah he's
00:45:15
helped me out so much he's yeah yeah and
00:45:18
so yes so it's around this time that you
00:45:20
started you started drinking um it's
00:45:23
sort of R in the comedy scene a or at
00:45:25
least it was then I suppose now it's
00:45:26
like right at the moment it's like yeah
00:45:30
like so many people just don't drink
00:45:32
anymore yeah and yeah and the change in
00:45:35
the last 21 years it seems more
00:45:36
acceptable now like if um if someone
00:45:38
says to you uh I'm I'm not drinking um
00:45:42
like 21 years ago the responsib be like
00:45:43
you you [ __ ] [ __ ]
00:45:47
now now now you sort of applaud them
00:45:50
like oh good for you good on you mate
00:45:51
yeah yeah oh you're looking after your
00:45:52
mental health great yes it's been an
00:45:55
interesting transition eh yeah what's
00:45:57
your relationship like with with alcohol
00:45:59
now is do do you need it to do you need
00:46:01
a coule before you you go on stage or
00:46:03
well that's yeah that's one thing one
00:46:05
area where I've cut down I don't really
00:46:07
drink before I go on stage anymore I
00:46:08
used to like [ __ ] I remember doing a I
00:46:12
did a bunch of shows in Queenstown
00:46:13
hosting like an event there and I was
00:46:16
drinking uh a bottle of whiskey every
00:46:18
night before I went on
00:46:20
stage like every night a bottle of
00:46:22
whiskey and um you you're still
00:46:24
functioning okay on stage yeah I can
00:46:26
still do it yeah yeah um yeah but yeah I
00:46:30
maybe I'll have a red wine or something
00:46:32
before I go on stage but if I'm doing
00:46:34
like a 1H hour show I um yeah I I can't
00:46:37
do
00:46:41
it yeah it's funny the their
00:46:43
relationship with alol it's like I and I
00:46:46
know I can I can stop but I
00:46:48
just yeah and it's it's strange and I
00:46:51
suppose this is this is addiction like
00:46:53
you talked about your 100 days I'm an
00:46:54
alcoholic I definitely am an alcohol
00:46:57
look yeah you're not saying this is a
00:46:59
joking way no yeah I want I'm constantly
00:47:01
reevaluating um my relationship with
00:47:04
alcohol cuz I think I've got an
00:47:05
unhealthy relationship with it as well
00:47:07
but what do you do when when you're
00:47:08
running like do you drink when doing
00:47:10
your marathons and stuff yeah yeah when
00:47:12
you when you're training for a marathon
00:47:13
like you have like um like a 12 week or
00:47:16
16 week block and you have hard runs or
00:47:18
as like a long run like a three-hour run
00:47:20
on a say Saturday or Sunday um maybe
00:47:23
just three hours
00:47:27
or maybe like a like a speed a speed
00:47:29
session during the week not the nose
00:47:31
speed the you know um so just I'll be
00:47:35
like okay I won't drink before those
00:47:37
before Those runs or if I'm getting for
00:47:39
dinner I'll just have a couple but the
00:47:40
other nights they yeah you know I'll
00:47:42
drink or oh really yeah like I mean I'm
00:47:45
I'm not um I'm not an Olympic Olympic
00:47:47
Athlete or anything like I'm just a guy
00:47:49
dude you're pretty [ __ ] good at what
00:47:50
you do though like that's amazing well
00:47:53
thank you I appreciate really good yeah
00:47:56
um how's your your mental health now you
00:47:58
you've you've yeah you've been through
00:48:00
es and fls over the years eh at the
00:48:02
moment I'm good
00:48:05
um I'm winning off my meds at the moment
00:48:08
have I'm not too dosed up
00:48:12
um workers I've got some a bit of work
00:48:14
happenings and um my daughter's good me
00:48:18
and my baby mama who's like my best
00:48:20
friend she's awesome people say uh uh
00:48:25
what's it saying they go um
00:48:27
happy wife happy life or again happy
00:48:29
ex-wife happy
00:48:30
life that's that's cool yeah yeah I've
00:48:33
read um was it Steve bronius that wrote
00:48:36
a big piece about about that the dynamic
00:48:38
of that relationship might be a the
00:48:39
article's online but it's a few years
00:48:41
old but um yeah it seems like a real
00:48:42
special I mean she yeah she just uh yeah
00:48:45
she's been she was loving with being
00:48:46
Fred for on and off for like maybe a
00:48:49
year um well she was in between places
00:48:51
and now yeah she's got a new place now
00:48:53
and yeah I'm I know I'm a pain of ass
00:48:57
but um she's always stuck by me and uh
00:49:00
yeah she's I owe her so much like she's
00:49:03
yeah so you were together for very you
00:49:06
were seeing each other very shortly into
00:49:08
it you got pregnant yeah yeah like how
00:49:10
long couple of months few months I think
00:49:12
so yeah maybe like 5 months five six
00:49:15
months yeah so then and then you
00:49:17
together through the pregnancy as a
00:49:19
couple yep and then we stayed together
00:49:20
after that for another till Freddy was
00:49:23
uh two yeah yeah okay right but the
00:49:28
relationship obviously wasn't perfect
00:49:29
but you're like let's try and make it
00:49:31
work because we've got this this amazing
00:49:33
well and Fred's young enough to not know
00:49:35
us breaking up yeah she'll just know us
00:49:38
as being friends and that's what we did
00:49:40
yeah what happened is not ultimately not
00:49:42
compatible as a couple or just didn't
00:49:44
have that sort of yeah and I'm just I'm
00:49:46
I'm a terrible boyfriend um yeah I
00:49:51
um yeah
00:49:53
she we could have done it but I'm I'm
00:49:56
just I had a lot of issues mental issues
00:49:59
and
00:50:00
just yeah yeah what yeah what does
00:50:03
mental health look like excuse me what
00:50:05
does mental health look like for you
00:50:07
like if if you know it's not where it
00:50:08
should be um what do you do like do you
00:50:11
push people away do you drink more do
00:50:14
you uh I definitely used to P push
00:50:17
people away and drink more um
00:50:20
now it just hasn't been that bad lately
00:50:23
so I I don't know but yeah I um
00:50:27
I don't know yeah definitely push people
00:50:29
away even like my mom and stuff like
00:50:31
everyone yeah I Y can resonate I I'm the
00:50:34
same like I sort of like self-isolate
00:50:36
which is probably the worst thing you
00:50:37
should be doing but you just literally
00:50:39
yeah I just don't want to talk to anyone
00:50:40
like yeah you make your world smaller
00:50:42
and smaller I'll do a school pickup and
00:50:44
that's my only interaction of
00:50:48
humans yeah it's [ __ ] it sucks hey um
00:50:52
how's your mental
00:50:53
health today it's all right it's quite
00:50:55
funny like chatting chatting to you and
00:50:57
hearing about the you the guy in chist
00:51:00
that you wanted to
00:51:01
be um want to [ __ ] up I I could um I can
00:51:05
see parallels like I yeah I sort of
00:51:07
self-isolate and sort of just don't want
00:51:09
to don't want to be with anyone just
00:51:10
want to be by myself which is you know
00:51:13
like distancing yourself from everyone
00:51:14
else is probably the worst thing you
00:51:15
could be doing but it's just what you
00:51:16
feel like doing um and then same same as
00:51:19
me like it it can be like something like
00:51:21
that like an
00:51:22
event that can that can you know it's
00:51:25
like a like a domino yeah totally yeah
00:51:27
um which you shouldn't be you you know
00:51:29
if your mental Health's in a good place
00:51:31
you you should be resilient enough that
00:51:33
one thing's not going to topple you over
00:51:35
no but no I don't know man like I'm good
00:51:38
now but I know that there could be one
00:51:40
thing that will trigger me like like
00:51:41
even like when I leave here something
00:51:43
might trigger me and I'll be like [ __ ]
00:51:44
it like yeah it's a weird way to live
00:51:49
but yeah so while we're on this um well
00:51:54
yeah uh the 2nd of August 2013
00:51:57
day that changed your life forever day
00:51:59
that changed the life of your family
00:52:00
forever yeah um you've done a TED talk
00:52:03
about this which I watched online it's
00:52:05
it's an amazing talk you make a couple
00:52:06
of jokes in there that don't land
00:52:07
because I think they don't land at
00:52:10
all I feel like humor is your way of
00:52:13
like like coping with it and break
00:52:15
breaking up which is a what is no doubt
00:52:17
the the hardest story in the world to
00:52:19
tell talking about this stuff now about
00:52:21
your dad Enrique um do yeah first of all
00:52:24
I want to know so it's almost 11 years
00:52:26
ago does it get easier to talk
00:52:28
about uh yeah I think so yeah yeah even
00:52:33
like at the start it was easy to talk
00:52:36
about I mean it's still it's hard but
00:52:40
it's know I I like talking about it I
00:52:43
like talking about him yeah yeah to sort
00:52:47
of keep his memory alive yeah yeah even
00:52:49
though he's a he's a [ __ ] but
00:52:51
[ __ ] is he he's he's a he's a c because
00:52:54
of what he did yeah yeah he was aming
00:52:56
human when he was alive but [ __ ] what a
00:52:59
[ __ ] dick yeah I've got a couple of
00:53:02
photos here oh yeah yeah a he was so
00:53:07
handsome yeah it's funny you say so
00:53:09
handsome he's he's got the same name as
00:53:11
you uh well the name you were given at
00:53:13
Birth can I keep this yeah yeah of
00:53:15
course and um you want to hold it up to
00:53:18
the the camera
00:53:20
he it's you I know it's [ __ ]
00:53:25
you and there's um there's this one as
00:53:28
well I don't know what he's wearing is
00:53:29
it maybe it's the shadow but it almost
00:53:31
looks like an old kiwi League top or
00:53:34
something uh that'll be like a football
00:53:37
shirt and chili so and it's you in the
00:53:40
front yeah little my little brother oh
00:53:43
my God he's going to be so angry you
00:53:45
said that oh my God we got to cut that
00:53:48
out he's going to be so
00:53:50
angry show me that's my brother pabl
00:53:53
you're at the very front well that's me
00:53:55
in the back oh you're in the back
00:53:57
oh so you f under
00:54:00
oh I just I didn't to be honest when I
00:54:03
when I printed it out um I was just
00:54:05
looking at your dad
00:54:09
yeah yeah sorry someone got to say who
00:54:12
the [ __ ] calling
00:54:15
me and uh oh baby Mom is calling
00:54:20
me oh you can get that get that if you
00:54:22
want that sounds important
00:54:28
hey I'm just doing uh a podcast um you
00:54:31
definitely have her cutting
00:54:36
[Laughter]
00:54:39
bag so so that's um Freddy's mom yeah
00:54:42
and I've noticed just when you took that
00:54:44
call noticed you've got her name on your
00:54:45
own yeah yeah yeah it's cool I um yeah
00:54:48
we had a we had a big fight and uh I
00:54:51
went to Christ Church to do some shows
00:54:53
and one of my tattoist is down there and
00:54:55
I got to tattoo her name just I can make
00:54:57
it up to her
00:55:00
for I don't regret any of my tattoos
00:55:03
from the seld ones but he the what the
00:55:05
Seinfeld ones what you got I got seren
00:55:09
now from Seinfeld
00:55:10
right oh um yeah that's a great photo
00:55:14
I'm Sor sorry for confusing you for
00:55:16
being um a girl um how do you think
00:55:18
those are girls like what I don't know I
00:55:20
didn't really think I was focusing on
00:55:22
your dad yeah so um yeah
00:55:26
so yeah do you want to talk about that D
00:55:28
yeah [ __ ] you yeah okay yeah um yeah so
00:55:32
I
00:55:34
um him and my mom were breaking up and
00:55:38
he so I was I so I just finished filming
00:55:41
what do
00:55:42
Shadows came back I was on the doll
00:55:44
living with my parents and uh I was
00:55:46
finishing my degree at Uni as well and
00:55:48
um living with them they were fighting
00:55:50
every night
00:55:52
um yeah my dad was hard to read he was
00:55:55
just a very he never wanted to have
00:55:57
friends he was just ready to stay at
00:55:58
home like my family's that's what all I
00:56:01
want all I
00:56:02
have um they got into arguments and
00:56:06
um I didn't think much of it I was like
00:56:08
okay they're going to break up it was
00:56:10
tough um but then I they had a mess of
00:56:14
fight and uh my mom left she went to
00:56:16
like woman's Refuge he wasn't like
00:56:18
beating her up but he um he was just
00:56:21
like mentally abusive and I I was like
00:56:24
[ __ ] I'm I'm going to leave I'm leaving
00:56:26
the Health as well so I left and he like
00:56:29
tried to get me to stay there he tried
00:56:30
to find me in the train station he's
00:56:32
like why are you leaving I'm like I
00:56:34
can't be here when you're doing this so
00:56:36
I left um went to
00:56:40
um do you know Josh M no I think he
00:56:44
might not he's like used to working he's
00:56:46
he's my best mate and um went to hang
00:56:49
out with him and my friend JY Virginia
00:56:51
Conor who's
00:56:53
amazing um had a big night
00:56:56
uh then the next day I went on a date to
00:57:00
the mall in low Hut and um
00:57:04
SE and we're walking around I'm trying
00:57:06
to get hold of my dad no one can get
00:57:07
hold of him my my sister's calling me
00:57:09
saying heavy hooded Dad I'm like no I
00:57:11
don't know he's probably just at work
00:57:12
they're calling his work the work hasn't
00:57:14
heard from him and then we're okay
00:57:15
something's up then my date drops me off
00:57:19
at um at my
00:57:20
house and the lights are all on the keys
00:57:23
aren't in the mailbox where they should
00:57:25
be but the lights are on and I break
00:57:26
through I break into my place through uh
00:57:29
my brother's room
00:57:30
window
00:57:33
um I like walk I'm like [ __ ] okay my
00:57:37
Dad's here he's he's killed himself and
00:57:40
I I just scream I try to see him he's
00:57:45
he's done he's cold he's [ __ ]
00:57:48
blue um tried to call call 111 but my
00:57:52
phone's about to die um
00:57:56
call them tell them just hurry up then I
00:57:58
hang up with them to call my
00:58:01
mom she's like okay she kind of I think
00:58:06
she kind of knew it was going to happen
00:58:08
and
00:58:10
um she called another ambulance cuz she
00:58:13
thought I was going to kill myself and I
00:58:14
literally went to the to the kitchen to
00:58:16
get a knife to kill myself U then I
00:58:19
called my sister she just start
00:58:20
screaming
00:58:22
um then I just go wait outside and the
00:58:25
police comes ambulance comes
00:58:29
um yeah then uh we're all everyone just
00:58:32
Josh and Virginia show
00:58:34
up all just waiting outside just sitting
00:58:36
outside and the ambulance guy comes out
00:58:38
and he's like
00:58:40
um yeah sorry to tell you but he's dead
00:58:43
I'm like yeah I know like I found
00:58:46
him and
00:58:49
yeah then after that we went to Josh
00:58:53
Josh's house we he put us up there for
00:58:55
like 2 weeks my whole
00:58:57
family
00:59:00
um was actually like a sounds weird but
00:59:02
it was actually like a really nice time
00:59:04
like I had so many people come together
00:59:07
and suuck that what happened but like
00:59:10
yeah like caught up with so many people
00:59:12
I hadn't seen in a while
00:59:13
and yeah and then I was filming while
00:59:16
we're doing Shadows we're doing pickups
00:59:17
for it as well so I had to go and film
00:59:20
like we had to cancel shooting for one
00:59:21
day I think um and yeah then we kep fing
00:59:26
and
00:59:28
yeah I've heard
00:59:31
um yeah I've heard people sort of say
00:59:33
that before it's like when you when this
00:59:35
happens yeah everyone's dropping off
00:59:37
meals and everyone's real supportive and
00:59:39
people really ra um you know rally
00:59:40
around gather around then even on the
00:59:42
first anniversary apparently it's the
00:59:44
same sort of thing it's a lot of support
00:59:46
apparently it's like year two year three
00:59:47
year four that you have to worry because
00:59:49
it's like people just forget and they
00:59:50
move on apart from the the family of
00:59:52
course yeah
00:59:54
um [ __ ]
00:59:56
[ __ ] so you were the last last person to
00:59:59
potentially last person to speak to him
01:00:01
I literally was he he when I left he he
01:00:03
goes um why does everyone leave me and I
01:00:07
said to him you got to you have to chill
01:00:09
out stop Dr like pushing people away and
01:00:12
I literally left him and then I was
01:00:15
literally the last person that left him
01:00:16
and we emailed together that
01:00:19
morning I so I just got like signed by
01:00:22
like an agency and I um I sent him the
01:00:26
email and he goes oh this this is very
01:00:29
good that's what he said something real
01:00:31
subtle not even excited about it he's
01:00:33
like okay cool I was like that's weird
01:00:35
usually he's very excited about that
01:00:36
kind of stuff and they so yeah we
01:00:38
emailed um so I know he didn't kill
01:00:40
himself before 9:00 a.m. that
01:00:45
day oh no I'm sure this is something
01:00:49
You' thought about a million times since
01:00:50
then um yeah um is there anything you
01:00:55
could have done
01:00:56
differently oh I got have stayed with
01:00:58
him that night and everyone says you
01:01:01
know he might have still done it but
01:01:02
like he wouldn't have done it that day
01:01:04
like I still so would have got him
01:01:05
through that moment and mate like still
01:01:07
to the St I have night tars every night
01:01:09
like literally have nightmares probably
01:01:11
every night of my life since then that I
01:01:13
should have stayed with him cuz if I
01:01:15
stayed with him he wouldn't have killed
01:01:16
himself that night and then who knows
01:01:18
what happens the next day maybe he would
01:01:19
have done it but maybe maybe he wouldn't
01:01:20
have you know so I could have I if I'd
01:01:23
stayed that night I could have changed
01:01:25
everything you
01:01:28
know you you must have had therapy about
01:01:31
this yeah yeah yeah what do they say
01:01:34
like you can't you can't you can't hold
01:01:36
any blame for this have you got do you
01:01:38
think you got survivors guilt in a way
01:01:41
yeah but I I don't even know survivor's
01:01:43
guil I
01:01:44
just like I literally if i' stayed that
01:01:48
night I would have changed maybe he
01:01:51
would have he would have done it he
01:01:52
would have like come to his like own
01:01:53
senses and just been like me and your
01:01:56
mom are going to break up or go and move
01:01:58
away together and they' just be a
01:02:00
divorced couple right now you
01:02:03
know but in saying that that um that
01:02:06
weekend he booked a getaway with my mom
01:02:10
to go to um like Greymouth like in like
01:02:12
the in water rapper somewhere mhm and um
01:02:16
after all that happened I go to Mom like
01:02:19
derck and he was going to take you there
01:02:20
to kill you and she's like
01:02:23
yep he's going to do a m of suicide I
01:02:25
reckon
01:02:27
yeah you just don't know [ __ ] that's a
01:02:29
big burden to carry
01:02:31
yeah so at least I save my mom I
01:02:38
guess you so when you reflect on um
01:02:41
andri now your dad yeah what do you
01:02:45
think is it just fun memories now fun
01:02:47
memories but also at the same time I'm
01:02:49
like you're Ming out on so much you know
01:02:52
like you've got a
01:02:54
granddaughter yes as does it sort of
01:02:56
fluctuate between like sadness and anger
01:02:58
yeah yeah literally sadness sometimes
01:03:00
I'm like I mean he he was amazing he got
01:03:03
to a point where he just had enough but
01:03:05
he was the most amazing human being that
01:03:07
ever lived like he was a genius he was
01:03:09
the best dad he was an amazing
01:03:12
footballer he was so intelligent
01:03:16
um he was so sentimental to everyone
01:03:18
that he met he had time for
01:03:21
everyone but um at the same time I'm
01:03:23
like dude like and you put for that like
01:03:26
you you knew I was going to find you
01:03:29
like he did that on purpose me and him
01:03:30
were arguing a lot during up like
01:03:32
leading up to that so he did that on
01:03:34
purpose you reckon yeah 100% yeah 100%
01:03:38
[ __ ] that's a massive burden
01:03:40
yeah
01:03:42
yeah I mean um
01:03:45
yeah no no no one yeah no one deserves
01:03:48
to to to see that like let alone a son
01:03:51
with his father yeah that's heavy hey
01:03:53
thanks for sharing that how how often do
01:03:55
you think about it now is it like hourly
01:03:59
daily every 10 minutes probably
01:04:03
everything I do I'm like it's either
01:04:05
just him like what happened
01:04:07
or sometimes I'm like oh [ __ ] want to
01:04:10
like there's a like a football game
01:04:11
going on I'm like I literally go to text
01:04:14
him and oh he's not around I like still
01:04:16
now like 11 years later I still go to
01:04:18
message him or email him like how have
01:04:21
you changed as a person since then um I
01:04:25
don't know I think definitely use it as
01:04:27
an excuse to be a piece of
01:04:29
[ __ ]
01:04:32
yeah I don't think you're a piece of
01:04:34
[ __ ] I know but you know what I mean
01:04:35
like it's def like out yeah it's just
01:04:38
even if I if I don't think if I'm not
01:04:41
thinking about it if I do something bad
01:04:42
I'm like oh it's because my my dad
01:04:45
killed himself
01:04:47
like have you ever seen a dead body [ __ ]
01:04:52
oh know but and and and fearness like um
01:04:55
yeah you have like it's it's all facts
01:04:58
like Mo most people listening to this or
01:05:00
hearing this myself included like
01:05:02
haven't haven't had to deal with this
01:05:03
and you don't know how [ __ ] traumatic
01:05:05
it would be it's a lot yeah all right
01:05:08
I'll keep doing it
01:05:09
then I haven't done it for a while I
01:05:12
actually like Dom like actually have
01:05:13
been like the last year I think I've
01:05:15
been pretty good like yeah yeah like
01:05:18
um no suicidal
01:05:21
faults um Everything's Awesome with my
01:05:23
daughter baby mama everything's good
01:05:26
um workers kind of picking up now so
01:05:30
yeah actually yeah I haven't been for a
01:05:32
while yeah it is um I probably first had
01:05:36
like um Suicidal Thoughts maybe 5 years
01:05:38
ago when you first start having them
01:05:39
when you when you start doing this um
01:05:43
get creative like creative ways to do it
01:05:45
no no no I never got to the point of
01:05:46
like um uh like like like planning it um
01:05:50
but you uh for me I found out I I'd come
01:05:54
up with like pros and cons Less in my in
01:05:55
my head yeah let you weigh things up um
01:05:58
you think about like who would miss you
01:06:00
and the impact would have and I suppose
01:06:01
if you're doing that you're not you're a
01:06:03
long way away from and who's going to
01:06:04
come to your funeral like dude I've got
01:06:08
this everyone's like um Cory you should
01:06:10
write a will you're 42 WR a will I don't
01:06:12
have a will but I've got a list of
01:06:14
people who I know will come to my
01:06:17
funeral who I hate yeah and I have a
01:06:19
list of them so the security will be
01:06:21
like no you can't he hated you like you
01:06:22
can't come to here he doesn't like you
01:06:24
guys that' be amazing like get some
01:06:27
bouncers from Poss
01:06:29
Central Poss Social Club are you uh yeah
01:06:32
not on those shoes bro and uh actually
01:06:35
Cory said that he you [ __ ] his misses
01:06:38
so no you can't get I had a made a few
01:06:41
years ago a dear mate um Michael cou who
01:06:43
died of cancer and and in his um in his
01:06:47
final six months he he was all over the
01:06:49
place like he he was dealing with um you
01:06:52
his mortality and a whole lot of other
01:06:53
stuff he he had some like like Rants and
01:06:57
TI rides online where he was talking
01:06:58
about you know [ __ ] that he didn't
01:07:00
want his funeral and he talked about
01:07:01
having like bouncers in a guest list and
01:07:04
then when the end came like the last
01:07:05
couple of weeks and he talked about
01:07:07
having a fabulous flamboyant thing at
01:07:08
the Civic or somewhere then the last
01:07:11
couple of weeks he he said to his mom no
01:07:12
I just want I want a religious ceremony
01:07:14
I want to reconnect with God and
01:07:16
anyone's welcome and he just sort of
01:07:18
gave up gave up the fight but it' be um
01:07:20
yeah so I suppose in a way like he ended
01:07:22
up dying with you know at peace yeah it
01:07:25
be nice to be like no [ __ ] you I want to
01:07:28
yeah it's a gig yeah don't don't don't
01:07:30
don't try and use my funeral as clout
01:07:32
for your social media yeah we we'll get
01:07:34
Dane Rumble to play
01:07:36
[ __ ] maybe day Haro open for him we
01:07:39
going run hey you can you can M see it
01:07:41
you can even see
01:07:43
yeah um okay for for anyone that's um
01:07:47
like watching this or listening to this
01:07:48
that's dealing with grief now maybe a
01:07:50
similar situation or maybe just like
01:07:53
a I know a breakup or some personal
01:07:55
thing which you know you can't you know
01:07:57
you go through those moments where
01:07:58
you're like I can't see the I can't see
01:08:00
how the storm's ever going to end I
01:08:01
can't see the light at the end of the
01:08:02
tunnel what would your advice
01:08:04
me um have a daughter but I know that's
01:08:08
hard to say but but
01:08:11
um I don't know yeah I I literally I'm I
01:08:16
don't think I'm the person to that
01:08:17
people should go to for advice at the
01:08:19
moment like I'm I contradict myself so
01:08:22
many
01:08:23
times um
01:08:26
yeah I'll say I'll say to people stop
01:08:28
drinking or [ __ ] go on medication but
01:08:31
yeah like I do those things and I stop
01:08:34
those things and I'm all over the show
01:08:36
so I don't know man yeah yeah you're
01:08:39
just I mean you're yeah
01:08:42
you're Yeah Yeah it's you're just trying
01:08:44
to [ __ ] survive I can't help anyone
01:08:46
yeah once I sort myself out then I'll
01:08:48
try and sort other people out oh no
01:08:50
that's fair enough um I guess well so
01:08:52
when so um this must be kind of
01:08:55
contradictory cuz like what we do in the
01:08:57
shadows it's one of the one of the high
01:08:58
points of your life and career so many
01:09:00
good memories around it but also yeah
01:09:02
how does it how does it feel when you
01:09:03
see it now like does it bring back
01:09:04
memories of your of your dad or are
01:09:07
there certain scenes in it or moments
01:09:08
that were filming around that time that
01:09:10
yeah yeah there yeah but um the only
01:09:12
time i' I've watched it recently is with
01:09:14
Freddy so um I love her watching it yeah
01:09:18
so that takes it away like that's like I
01:09:20
know I was like that scene I was like oh
01:09:22
my God I showed
01:09:24
up [ __ ] that didn't probably didn't have
01:09:26
to put makeup on me I just looked like a
01:09:28
vampire anyway
01:09:30
um yeah that's Freddy like Freddy loves
01:09:33
it so watch watching it and yeah making
01:09:37
making um making jokes or trying to make
01:09:39
jokes about um this really [ __ ] Bleak
01:09:42
stuff is this just like your coping
01:09:44
mechanism yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
01:09:48
I think it be the same way do you do you
01:09:50
love that it makes people feel
01:09:51
uncomfortable yeah there's nothing I
01:09:53
love more than making people feel
01:09:55
uncomfortable I love it I love I love
01:09:57
people hating me I love
01:10:00
it I don't think no one hates you though
01:10:03
I know some people dude dude go online
01:10:05
these I mean all these [ __ ] racists
01:10:07
they [ __ ] hate me people uh I'm very
01:10:09
like I don't know if I'm leftwing but
01:10:11
I'm very political um dude you should
01:10:14
like I've been banned from Twitter three
01:10:16
times like I've been [ __ ] like I love
01:10:20
it like if someone says they don't like
01:10:23
me I want to make I want to go harder to
01:10:25
make them hate me even more you double
01:10:28
down yeah I'll never like if you like me
01:10:31
great but I'd rather people hate me so I
01:10:33
can just build on that you
01:10:36
know yeah where does that come from cuz
01:10:38
I think I'm probably the opposite end of
01:10:40
the spectrum whereas I'm you know you
01:10:42
want to be liked oh yeah I got people
01:10:44
people pleasing Tendencies but I think I
01:10:46
think I'm I'm in a wrong position I
01:10:48
think you're in the wrong position too I
01:10:49
think the care position would be to be
01:10:51
indifferent about
01:10:52
it you know what I mean like to yeah
01:10:55
just
01:10:55
not be bothered not be bothered if
01:10:56
someone likes you or hates you yeah um I
01:11:01
mean isn't that me just wanting people
01:11:03
people to hate me that I'm not
01:11:06
bothered I youed say but but by Nature
01:11:09
what you do for a job you that you want
01:11:10
people to like you at the same time it's
01:11:12
like a going on stage people having
01:11:14
people laugh at you it almost is like a
01:11:16
desperate need to be to be loved I guess
01:11:18
I oh yeah I mean is it or no this this
01:11:23
i' I've never done stand-up comedy in my
01:11:25
life
01:11:28
I don't know it's just something that I
01:11:29
know that I'm good at and I like to do
01:11:31
it and I know that it'll
01:11:34
work and then when it doesn't I just
01:11:36
laugh at it I'm
01:11:38
like like could you cun do this
01:11:42
like yeah yeah you are you are very good
01:11:45
like anyone that's um checking this
01:11:48
podcast out you just have to YouTube you
01:11:49
know and find some clips there's some
01:11:50
bloody great stuff there um how how
01:11:54
confident are you
01:11:56
that that you'll never you know reach
01:11:58
the point that your dad did or have that
01:12:00
that that moment of weakness yeah that
01:12:03
moment where you make a a you know a
01:12:05
permanent decision for a temporary
01:12:07
problem
01:12:09
um yeah like way more now than ever like
01:12:13
I'm yeah I've come close so many times
01:12:16
I'm yeah I'm terrible at killing
01:12:19
myself but um yeah now that like
01:12:22
Freddy's growing up she's 9 next week
01:12:28
um yeah I um I hate that I even had
01:12:32
those thoughts but in saying that who
01:12:35
knows if they will come again but
01:12:38
um yeah right now I'm I'm good I'm here
01:12:41
doing a podcast with dom HBY from The
01:12:44
Edge Dom H from the the Dom H podcast
01:12:47
now yeah yeah we've been going backwards
01:12:49
and forwards for a while I I think you
01:12:51
you even asked to come on which I was
01:12:52
super honored about I was flatter yeah
01:12:55
man I watched the your interview of the
01:12:57
lady who uh eaned herself like that oh
01:13:01
yeah Tracy
01:13:02
Hickman that was what a what a good
01:13:05
interview and what a lovely lady like
01:13:08
[ __ ] yeah just really really cool and I
01:13:11
was really pleased the uh that that
01:13:12
episode could come out before she died
01:13:14
and she she wasn't even on Tik Tok but
01:13:16
some of her friends were and nieces and
01:13:18
stuff and they could be like you know
01:13:19
auntie Tracy over a million people have
01:13:21
seen you and that was really cool like
01:13:23
that's that like that killed me [ __ ]
01:13:25
yeah oh thanks mate and um what's what's
01:13:29
your in a voice like these days are you
01:13:31
mostly kind to yourself
01:13:32
or
01:13:35
uh no oh not really no I'm
01:13:39
quite you know I I think I could do a
01:13:42
lot better than what I'm doing right now
01:13:44
but um it's hard he it's an ongoing
01:13:47
[ __ ] thing yeah and this industry
01:13:49
it's like I wish I just be a journalist
01:13:52
you know
01:13:57
yeah it is um it's a very special skill
01:14:00
you've got to make to make light of you
01:14:02
know absolutely
01:14:03
anything yeah it's cool okay well let's
01:14:06
let's talk about fatherhood so um yeah
01:14:09
so Anna we talked about her before yeah
01:14:11
um [ __ ] that's a special relationship he
01:14:14
that's really cool yeah um yeah what do
01:14:17
you think it is that sh that she sees a
01:14:19
new where she has this just sort of
01:14:20
unwavering unwavering like oh you had to
01:14:23
ask her about it but um
01:14:26
she
01:14:29
um uh she hates me and loves me at the
01:14:32
same as much the same
01:14:35
amounts um but I think she knows I'm I'm
01:14:37
a really good dad and um and a good
01:14:40
person yeah I think I'm I'm a good
01:14:42
person I think yeah know yeah you are so
01:14:46
maybe she just she maybe it's a case of
01:14:49
I I feel like this is the similar sort
01:14:50
of thing we don't have we don't have a
01:14:53
but me and JJ yeah it's like um
01:14:56
sometimes when I'm when I'm down on
01:14:57
myself um yeah she she'll God maybe it's
01:15:01
the beers um but she she you know can
01:15:04
see in me the person that I can't
01:15:06
sometimes see in myself yeah um which is
01:15:08
really touching 100% like and will call
01:15:10
me maybe once every once a month and
01:15:13
just have a breakdown about my life he's
01:15:15
like Cory you got you do this right do
01:15:18
this you're doing this bad blah blah
01:15:19
blah and yeah she knows that like she
01:15:21
she would have left me a long time ago
01:15:23
with like I wouldn't have Freddy if she
01:15:25
wasn't that um invested in trying to
01:15:28
make me be a better
01:15:30
person yeah that's really cool um yeah
01:15:33
one thing and my current partner a she's
01:15:37
exactly the same like if I'm like oh
01:15:38
[ __ ] podcast is [ __ ] I'm not making
01:15:40
enough money she'll she'll she'll she'll
01:15:44
do the same sort of thing you know 12
01:15:46
months ago you said you wanted to be
01:15:47
here and you're here you wanted to be
01:15:49
here and you've done this um so she tell
01:15:51
me to sort of pull my head in um I
01:15:54
sometimes wonder wonder if you have the
01:15:55
same thing if I like add any sort of
01:15:58
like reciprocal value to their lives
01:16:00
yeah I'm like I think she could she
01:16:02
could do this Freddy without me but um I
01:16:05
just love my daughter too much but like
01:16:07
yeah if I was a piece of [ __ ] dad then
01:16:09
I'd leave but
01:16:11
um oh she's she's got together she's
01:16:14
she's so good [ __ ] that's so cool eh
01:16:17
yeah that's so cool yeah what do you do
01:16:19
to um nurture and protect that
01:16:21
relationship with Anna that you've got
01:16:22
now um
01:16:26
keep my apartment
01:16:29
tidy um or do she have like some sort of
01:16:32
expectations like well she was living
01:16:33
with us and she she like sorted the
01:16:35
whole apartment out she like remodeled
01:16:37
it like [ __ ] so I've kept it
01:16:39
literally it's the same as when she left
01:16:42
um we moving out in two weeks though so
01:16:44
but um and uh yeah I don't know like
01:16:49
just be awesome with Freddy yeah oh
01:16:52
that's cool yeah yeah yeah I just trying
01:16:54
yeah I try to add value to their life
01:16:56
like where where I can it's like [ __ ]
01:16:58
what what can I do to make their life
01:16:59
easier or better so my girlfriend as she
01:17:01
she like loves having like a weat pack
01:17:04
which is like a oh so wity back like the
01:17:07
it's like a we we pack yeah so I hit
01:17:09
that up in the microwave the other day
01:17:10
she left at work so I went uh to New
01:17:12
World and bought her a hot water bottle
01:17:14
instead um
01:17:16
she she's 30 she didn't know what a hot
01:17:18
water bottle was how old are you 51 oh
01:17:21
my god um how old are you 42 42 you look
01:17:24
43
01:17:25
I don't look 43 you do man oh thank you
01:17:29
um she didn't know what it was I I said
01:17:31
I she know what this is cold I'm like oh
01:17:35
she said I'm going to go heat it up in
01:17:36
the microwave I'm like no no no no no no
01:17:39
I said I said what's what's it called
01:17:41
she's like it's a hottie and I'm like no
01:17:43
but like what is it what and she's like
01:17:45
she didn't know hot water bottle so I
01:17:48
explained to her that you drain it and
01:17:49
you fill it up with hot water she didn't
01:17:51
know that but anyway so that's just just
01:17:54
little of service like that and JJ when
01:17:56
I drop the dog off I'll get her a coffee
01:17:59
and stuff I really appreciate those
01:18:02
relationships so after feeling like um
01:18:05
and you guys are so best friends yeah
01:18:08
the best so um yeah yeah yeah I I just
01:18:12
look for ways she adds so much value to
01:18:13
my life so I just look for ways that I
01:18:15
can add value to hers even though did
01:18:16
she leave the radio yesterday or
01:18:18
something she announced she was leaving
01:18:19
yeah and she's finishing in like a
01:18:20
week's time she's been doing it a long
01:18:22
time it's a it's a long long time to
01:18:25
come up with you you have to do a lot of
01:18:27
content on radio like each voice breaks
01:18:29
as like a bit a piece of content and
01:18:31
yeah I kind and it's so much [ __ ]
01:18:33
content you have to do because you as as
01:18:35
a result of doing so much of it yeah
01:18:38
yeah so I I read a quot in an article or
01:18:41
maybe I maybe it was on a podcast but um
01:18:43
you used the line Freddy saved our
01:18:45
family yeah what do you mean like she
01:18:47
was just glue at a time when you needed
01:18:49
it or yeah pretty much
01:18:51
um Iron was still so she was born what
01:18:54
like a year less than a year after my
01:18:56
dad died no no sorry not we got pregnant
01:18:59
a year after that um yeah almost 2 years
01:19:02
after he died and um yeah she was the
01:19:06
glue that kept everyone together kept
01:19:08
everyone kind of Sig for a bit and yeah
01:19:11
and she tell us like
01:19:13
she's the best thing in the world yeah
01:19:17
and you're um this is a big word to use
01:19:19
but I'd say you're boted like you're a
01:19:21
[ __ ] great dad I'm OB sess like
01:19:24
literally I will I will call for
01:19:27
here you we were going to do this
01:19:29
podcast at 1:00 and you're like just to
01:19:31
make sure we've got enough time I need
01:19:33
to pick fry up from school at 3: or go
01:19:35
to boxing classes or something so you
01:19:37
got kickboxing yeah yeah
01:19:39
kickboxing she's so good
01:19:41
you yeah so we rescheduled and made it a
01:19:43
little bit earlier just to make sure we
01:19:45
had enough enough time she's such a good
01:19:46
C boxer
01:19:55
so she's 9 years old why did she
01:20:04
um she's spinning around doing a oh [ __ ]
01:20:07
an a kick onto some kids pads
01:20:10
yeah [ __ ] Israel little son you look out
01:20:13
[ __ ] yeah Freddy's coming for
01:20:15
you no no she's not she's not what why
01:20:19
did she why did she gravitate towards
01:20:20
kickboxing by the way it looks like it's
01:20:22
a kid's kickboxing class it's a yeah
01:20:24
it's it's like under twelves um I don't
01:20:28
know me just want she likes watching UFC
01:20:30
with me and um she's quite athletic
01:20:34
she's very good at sports and I thought
01:20:36
she'd
01:20:36
be awesome at [ __ ] shut up you is
01:20:41
your your ultimate girl one day that she
01:20:43
goes to Thailand and gets a free drink
01:20:45
by you try maybe maybe a different
01:20:48
Island don't go to pee PE actually no no
01:20:51
I'll take it with me you're not yet
01:20:52
that's the guy that's the guy right
01:20:53
there
01:20:55
like 70 at the
01:20:58
time um oh yeah so that's so um yeah as
01:21:03
a father do do you sort of model what
01:21:06
you do on your own dad or do you think
01:21:08
you're dude my dad was the um when our
01:21:11
daughter was born my sister was born
01:21:13
he's he's the best I've never seen a man
01:21:15
around a little baby girl like that in
01:21:19
my entire life he was the best dead ever
01:21:21
um and I I just I've always from that I
01:21:25
always want to have a little girl and we
01:21:27
had a little girl and I'm like yeah like
01:21:29
he was the best dad ever like to my
01:21:31
sister like
01:21:34
[Music]
01:21:35
amazing you can see the impact he had
01:21:37
and they they actually went to Thailand
01:21:39
together to for a trip I don't think
01:21:41
they go to a fight
01:21:44
but yeah oh that's special um yes so so
01:21:49
Freddy's nine now if you're next week
01:21:52
yeah if you're experiencing poor meal he
01:21:54
like do you do you address it with her
01:21:56
or do you try and like Shield her from
01:21:58
she knows yeah we've uh just actually
01:22:00
just maybe in the last couple of months
01:22:01
we told her about what happened with my
01:22:03
dad how do you [ __ ] how do you do
01:22:06
that we just said that he from suicide
01:22:10
and yeah um and she knows it and she
01:22:13
gets it she's just she's a genius she
01:22:15
gets it she's more on to it than all of
01:22:17
us
01:22:19
um yeah and she knows I'll tell her
01:22:21
sometimes I'm
01:22:22
like we have to go do something if we
01:22:25
cancel it I'm like I'm too anxious to go
01:22:26
there and she's like okay I understand
01:22:28
Daddy I understand like yeah she knows
01:22:30
all about yeah you what gives you
01:22:34
anxiety it's called
01:22:36
pickups oh that's a cop out you can't
01:22:39
get away with that oh P interviews
01:22:42
interviews
01:22:44
um um going on dates talking to people
01:22:47
doing podcasts
01:22:48
[Laughter]
01:22:51
um no we no what what makes what makes
01:22:55
it obviously like um you're a performer
01:22:57
so well is being on stage to like you
01:22:59
comfortable place yeah it's the only
01:23:01
place I actually feel
01:23:02
safe do do you get anxiety like doing
01:23:05
podcast or is that just sort of a no oh
01:23:07
actually no yeah I was quite anxious
01:23:10
yeah yeah yeah so I I thought you might
01:23:12
get anxious for things like this CU you
01:23:13
know like you going to have to talk
01:23:14
about your dad and I'm sure it's not a
01:23:16
you know not a I mean it's not a fun
01:23:18
thing to talk about it's bloody Bleak
01:23:20
and it's hard do you do you did um do
01:23:23
you get emot when we spoke about it
01:23:25
earlier like and you have to take
01:23:27
yourself back there do you you know is
01:23:28
it emotional is it draining it's
01:23:30
emotional but dude I haven't cried
01:23:33
in the last time I cried was when I
01:23:35
heard about uh D getting cancer so like
01:23:39
two years ago whatever and since then I
01:23:42
haven't cried since the day that my dad
01:23:44
died since then I I don't cry about him
01:23:46
anymore are you are you quite are you an
01:23:48
emotional person
01:23:50
or I'm
01:23:52
dramatic but yeah I don't what does that
01:23:54
mean is is that like a a Chilean thing
01:23:56
or yeah I'm very passionate yeah yeah um
01:24:00
but yeah I don't
01:24:02
um yeah I don't after after all happened
01:24:05
like before that before my dad died I'd
01:24:07
cry all the time M when that happened
01:24:09
like since then I'm just like I just
01:24:13
yeah yeah and what a um what a Chilean
01:24:17
mean like and tibs are like talking
01:24:19
about you know like I suppose their
01:24:22
feelings or you know showing ability and
01:24:24
stuff like that are they sort like kiwi
01:24:26
men or yeah well but it's like yeah like
01:24:29
but in a flamboyant way of saying stop
01:24:32
being a gay pretty much stop
01:24:35
being I thought um like South South
01:24:38
maybe this is more argentinians but I
01:24:39
thought South Americans were like quite
01:24:41
quite expressive and quite oh very
01:24:42
expressive but yeah yeah but but that's
01:24:44
why I said they'll be very expressive
01:24:46
don't be
01:24:49
gay oh so what about you what's the
01:24:52
future going to
01:24:53
bring um um don't know got
01:24:57
um got pretty that's
01:24:59
it or to be a gang member on Short
01:25:03
Street yesterday so see what happens
01:25:04
with that my third audition for short
01:25:06
Street playing a gang member don't you
01:25:08
make jokes about shorties all the talk
01:25:10
dude that's I thing all the time like
01:25:13
I'm like are they taking the piss like I
01:25:15
I'm not a fan of your show like why you
01:25:17
why are you getting me to do this are
01:25:19
you just making fun of me like maybe
01:25:20
that like trolling you like oh oh yes he
01:25:23
takes the piss out of us but we'll take
01:25:24
our [ __ ] money if it's yeah d i I'll
01:25:27
take anything I reckon I'll be good I'll
01:25:28
be a good game member like I've been I
01:25:31
mean but you know you you you've got a
01:25:34
lot of a lot of tattoos for a late
01:25:36
starter so you got your first tattoo at
01:25:39
age
01:25:40
um
01:25:44
like 26 maybe right yeah yeah yeah now
01:25:48
you're like a full sleeve and you you
01:25:50
don't regret any of them you're happy
01:25:51
with all of them what are the most
01:25:53
meaningful on what are you my brother
01:25:56
did a lot of them when he was he was a
01:25:57
tattoist and he was like signing out he
01:25:59
did a lot of them on me um that's the
01:26:02
first one I got which is the uh inan god
01:26:05
of war and entertainment we're all like
01:26:08
inan
01:26:09
bloodline
01:26:11
um and then I don't
01:26:15
know yeah Anna's name your ex is good
01:26:18
it's a good one but I might change I'm
01:26:20
waiting to meet someone called henna
01:26:24
yeah are you are you dating at the
01:26:26
moment or you are you on the apps what
01:26:27
are you uh yeah been on the apps I'm
01:26:31
kind of just yeah dating a little bit
01:26:35
but yeah I'm I don't I'm I'm not a good
01:26:38
boyfriend yeah yeah do you feel like you
01:26:40
need to um
01:26:43
yeah feel like you need to sort of do
01:26:45
some do some more work on yourself
01:26:46
before you're ready to like fully lean
01:26:47
into someone else but even that bro like
01:26:51
I'd be happy just being by myself like I
01:26:54
like me so I've got Freddy probably we
01:26:57
probably 50/50 half of the week I've got
01:26:58
Freddy half of the week I don't I love
01:27:00
being by myself and then I love being
01:27:02
with Freddy and that's enough like I
01:27:04
don't like something comes up that's
01:27:06
great then sure but
01:27:08
I'm yeah I'm just I'm not a good
01:27:11
boyfriend and that's too much of a
01:27:13
stress like to try and be someone's
01:27:15
boyfriend well what do what do you need
01:27:17
to do better what what are your what are
01:27:20
your like recognizable
01:27:21
flaws um
01:27:25
I don't know I just I'm lazy and
01:27:28
[Laughter]
01:27:30
uh and
01:27:32
like don't like being told what to do I
01:27:35
don't like being told what to do I don't
01:27:37
like being told anything and
01:27:40
um I just think I'm smarter than
01:27:44
everyone it's funny hey [ __ ] um yeah
01:27:48
like you and I we like we're very
01:27:50
different people but there's there's
01:27:52
still a lot of parallels it's probably
01:27:53
the same with with a lot of people um
01:27:55
you're quite you you're you're quite
01:27:57
good at being open and talking about
01:27:58
[ __ ] now I feel and have you got some
01:28:00
good friends that you talk to about
01:28:01
stuff yeah yeah yeah yeah like real deep
01:28:03
[ __ ] yeah yeah yeah like Josh Mullen who
01:28:06
I mentioned before um he's um you've
01:28:08
been we we've hang out with one before
01:28:09
you know okay um yeah he's my best
01:28:12
friend he yeah knows everything about me
01:28:15
um Anna as well yeah how are my two best
01:28:20
friends yeah like you're s ride or D
01:28:23
people you're doing anything
01:28:25
yeah it's cool it's good to have those
01:28:26
people in your life yeah hey this has
01:28:29
been a bloody great chat today dude love
01:28:31
it it's been really cool I really
01:28:32
appreciate it appreciate you yeah anyone
01:28:35
that comes when I first started doing
01:28:37
this podcast um people be like oh I'd
01:28:40
love to be on your podcast I I found it
01:28:42
a bit weird and then the longer I've got
01:28:43
into it I've realized that's more a me
01:28:45
problem than them and now I applaud it
01:28:47
so I figure a if someone's prepared to
01:28:49
come on it means they're prepared to
01:28:51
talk but also yeah Uncle LL how
01:28:54
how cool oh yeah um that was yeah I was
01:28:58
did he come by himself or with other
01:28:59
people he he came came with us oh bro
01:29:02
this yeah embarrassing story so he he
01:29:04
came with his wife and their baby yeah
01:29:06
so he he pressed the end to come
01:29:08
downstairs like you did I was like oh
01:29:09
come down and meet you so I went
01:29:11
downstairs and in the Foy year he was
01:29:14
there Uncle lingling um gang member with
01:29:16
his with his um vest on and his big gold
01:29:18
chain next to him this lady in her in
01:29:21
her early 30s with a Prem so
01:29:25
immediately he this Aura of intimidation
01:29:28
so I turned to her CU I thought I
01:29:30
thought she was here being l in by
01:29:32
someone else waiting for her friend to
01:29:33
come back so I didn't hear and I say
01:29:35
it's okay he's with me
01:29:39
and and then
01:29:43
she then she said um no he's with
01:29:48
me suddenly I realized just every sort
01:29:51
of prejudice yeah it's like it was like
01:29:55
a they weren't sitting a trap but I I
01:29:58
set myself a trap and I fell into it and
01:30:00
it's um fny I don't know Michelle Obama
01:30:02
had a quote saying something like um
01:30:04
it's hard to hard to dis I'm going to
01:30:06
[ __ ] this up but it something like it's
01:30:08
most people are hard to dislike up close
01:30:10
yeah um yeah I I fully agree with that
01:30:13
like he's he's a flawed human being but
01:30:15
I am you are I think David Bane would be
01:30:18
quite hard
01:30:19
to hey you should get him he's living in
01:30:22
Cambridge right now is he not with his
01:30:25
family with his wife she's a teacher um
01:30:28
you should get him on the show like
01:30:30
literally get David Bane I don't know if
01:30:32
he'd want to do anything did you listen
01:30:34
to that podcast um called black hands
01:30:36
yeah I love it yeah he he did it yeah he
01:30:40
he must have got to like the last five
01:30:42
minutes of the last episode and just
01:30:43
like quietly like put his laptop down
01:30:46
pushed it
01:30:48
away like yeah he like yeah not for
01:30:52
me lot of lot of plot holes lot of plot
01:30:55
holes yeah know I'm going back to I'm
01:30:57
watching just uh True Detective
01:31:02
yeah yeah so um what's next for you
01:31:05
still just grinding away it's a [ __ ]
01:31:07
it's a tough industry eh grinding away
01:31:09
um yeah just GS
01:31:12
and I've got a lot of ideas for like
01:31:14
shows that I'm going to try and PCH I've
01:31:15
tried I've ped a bunch recently so see
01:31:19
what happens with that but yeah I don't
01:31:20
know man are are you are you you
01:31:23
financially secure you like you've no of
01:31:26
course not yeah no no yeah [ __ ] it's
01:31:31
it's not a it's not an industry for the
01:31:33
faint is it it's bloody H AB I I got
01:31:35
paid today for for a gig and I have
01:31:38
money for like 2 weeks but then after
01:31:40
that I'll have I don't know what's
01:31:41
happening after that you know it's like
01:31:43
that all
01:31:45
done but you've stuck at it you've been
01:31:47
doing it for two decades now yeah but I
01:31:49
should be like a journalist you know
01:31:51
yeah I've got I've got a degree I've got
01:31:53
a you need degree like I should be
01:31:55
[ __ ] doing something you know what
01:31:57
was your degree in in film so not really
01:31:59
a
01:32:01
degree well I mean yeah money's yeah
01:32:04
money's not everything but it's when
01:32:06
people say that they have money it's
01:32:07
like oh you know get the [ __ ] out of
01:32:09
here you like cuz you do need money to
01:32:11
live D money is everything I recomend
01:32:14
but you're doing yeah I mean you're
01:32:15
doing what you love and you're very good
01:32:17
