00:00:17
well Adam welcome very much thank you
00:00:19
for having me yeah know uh we honored to
00:00:21
have you at the W India economic forum
00:00:23
and at the knowledge at won as well
00:00:25
thanks thanks for coming uh so let's
00:00:28
start off with your recent trip to India
00:00:30
you were just in India I was there for
00:00:32
the entire month of March and was that
00:00:34
your first trip it was my first trip
00:00:35
yeah so Impressions give us your
00:00:37
impression it was unbelievable um uh you
00:00:39
know we've been our company has been
00:00:41
operating in India from New York City
00:00:43
but our you know our our user base has
00:00:45
been in India for about a year but none
00:00:47
of us have been had been there and so in
00:00:49
my head India was a concept and it
00:00:52
wasn't reality until I actually stepped
00:00:53
off the plane and you know immediately
00:00:56
the sights smells sounds just hit you
00:00:59
and it's just such a different place I
00:01:01
I've done a lot of traveling in my life
00:01:03
nothing really compared to to sort of
00:01:05
the entirely different world that India
00:01:07
is so it's a sensory overload
00:01:09
absolutely right so and you were there
00:01:11
for a month yes and you were there for
00:01:13
igniter so why don't you tell us a
00:01:14
little bit about igniter sure I was
00:01:16
there for igniter that's right that's my
00:01:17
startup it's a group dating website
00:01:19
which basically means you and your
00:01:21
friends make a profile together you go
00:01:24
find another group and you all go out on
00:01:26
a group date and so the idea is that
00:01:29
it's a safer less awkward more fun
00:01:31
approach to online dating and you had
00:01:34
never been to India none of your
00:01:35
partners had been to
00:01:36
India what happened um we had never been
00:01:40
to India none of our partners had been
00:01:41
to India and uh we started the company
00:01:44
really with the idea of building
00:01:45
something for ourselves uh you know we
00:01:47
were 20s somethings living in New York
00:01:50
City wanting a better way to meet new
00:01:52
people but what happened was the site
00:01:54
took off in India and so over the course
00:01:57
of 2009 and into 20 10 while we were
00:02:01
focusing on markets like New York City
00:02:03
and Philadelphia and Boston we would go
00:02:05
into our analytics and see that places
00:02:07
like India and Malaysia and Singapore
00:02:09
and Indonesia were just growing like
00:02:11
crazy right and so you thought so at
00:02:15
first we thought that's interesting but
00:02:17
it's not it's not our Focus so we
00:02:19
ignored it uh you know and we said well
00:02:21
let's you know we'll track the growth
00:02:23
but that's we won't focus on it and that
00:02:26
only lasted a few months because the
00:02:27
growth continued and it started to get
00:02:30
you know to really ramp up to the point
00:02:32
where we looked at each other and said
00:02:34
guys what are we doing this is this you
00:02:35
know we don't know exactly why but
00:02:37
there's something really working here uh
00:02:40
and so that's when we decided we're
00:02:41
going to change our focus and really
00:02:43
figure out what we're doing right and
00:02:45
what we're doing wrong and continue to
00:02:47
you know to optimize our site for for
00:02:48
these markets right so what were you
00:02:50
doing right in India you think I think
00:02:52
the model is is right um I think the
00:02:54
fact that we're a group dating website
00:02:56
is is right in India um and I I didn't
00:03:00
know this at first and I'm I'm learning
00:03:01
it more and more now and the more people
00:03:02
I talk to people like yourself people
00:03:04
like uh you know who who grew up in
00:03:06
India people who just understand Indian
00:03:08
culture I get the same Universal story
00:03:11
they say uh you know I say I tell them
00:03:13
the story and I say you know it was
00:03:14
really a surprise it was an accident and
00:03:16
to them it it it's it's uh a no-brainer
00:03:19
they say of course that you know that
00:03:21
makes perfect sense that group dating is
00:03:23
working in India culturally that's just
00:03:26
a perfect fit and so that that's what
00:03:28
we're learning yeah and uh can you also
00:03:31
give us some of your impressions about
00:03:32
the entrepreneurship ecosystem in India
00:03:34
now obviously you've you were here for a
00:03:36
few years working on your startup uh I
00:03:38
imagine other startups in the past uh
00:03:41
and now you've just come from India I
00:03:42
imagine met other entrepreneurs met
00:03:45
other you know VCS users Etc can you
00:03:48
give us some sense of how you perceive
00:03:50
the entrepreneurship ecosystem in India
00:03:51
I think it's just starting to really
00:03:54
take off right now uh I was able to meet
00:03:56
with uh some really great entrepreneurs
00:03:59
and I think what it's going to take is a
00:04:02
couple big exits in order for you know
00:04:04
the US uh Silicon Valley even New York
00:04:07
has had some has some really big
00:04:08
successes and uh sites like make my trip
00:04:12
for example in India are the those type
00:04:14
of events that kind of uh you know an
00:04:16
IPO major major exits are the are the
00:04:19
kind of thing that are going to get the
00:04:20
smartest people in India the most driven
00:04:23
people in India to question uh you know
00:04:25
taking the sort of uh traditional path
00:04:29
after school and really you know trying
00:04:31
something new and and realizing that
00:04:33
there's big opportunity in taking a risk
00:04:34
and I think that that's just starting to
00:04:36
happen now yeah but did you think that
00:04:38
there was now starting to be a lot of
00:04:40
support around entrepreneurs who did
00:04:42
take the plunge absolutely I actually
00:04:44
met with uh a lot of great VCS and and
00:04:48
you know and I don't know the VC I don't
00:04:50
know the history as well of the VC World
00:04:51
in India but from what I understand it's
00:04:53
a pretty nent uh environment and the
00:04:57
there's a ton of early stage money out
00:05:01
there looking for great companies and
00:05:03
I've been able to work with um you know
00:05:06
not necessarily take money from but work
00:05:07
with some of these VCS in India and the
00:05:09
type of support they're providing to
00:05:11
startups even startups they're not
00:05:12
investing in but uh is is tremendous
00:05:15
then the amount of time that they're
00:05:16
putting into into these startups is
00:05:17
really amazing right so what's your
00:05:19
future plan in India for igniter uh our
00:05:21
future plan is to is to really continue
00:05:24
to understand like I said what we're
00:05:25
doing right and what we're doing wrong
00:05:26
that's the first step we're we're in the
00:05:28
process of opening an office there in
00:05:29
Mumbai in Mumbai uhhuh uh and hiring
00:05:32
people we want to hire a product team in
00:05:34
India we have our first hire just uh
00:05:36
we're just completing that process right
00:05:38
now and really the first steps are going
00:05:40
to be looking at our brand identity in
00:05:42
India you know like I said I mean the
00:05:44
site the brand everything associated
00:05:46
with the site was built for a US
00:05:47
audience right so some things are are
00:05:50
are happen to be working really well in
00:05:52
India uh we're starting to figure out
00:05:53
what those are and some things I I think
00:05:55
uh are not going to be working well in
00:05:57
India and we need to sort of identify
00:05:58
those and change them
00:06:00
and from there I think we'll look to
00:06:01
continue to step on the gas and and grow
00:06:04
yeah so if I can bring you back to your
00:06:06
own personal story so you grew up in New
00:06:09
Jersey yes and you know here you are
00:06:12
working on a startup that's uh doing
00:06:15
really well in India yeah can you tell
00:06:16
us a bit about your personal trajectory
00:06:18
how you actually took the plunge uh into
00:06:20
Entre entrepreneurship sure so um
00:06:23
entrepreneurship was always an idea in
00:06:25
the back of my head but it was never uh
00:06:27
it was never it was never something that
00:06:28
I knew I wanted to do I I grew up in New
00:06:30
Jersey I went to Northwestern University
00:06:32
in Chicago majored in film I actually
00:06:34
always thought I wanted to be a writer
00:06:36
for TV um and there's TV in India
00:06:40
there's TV in India exactly so a after
00:06:43
school I started working in television
00:06:45
um but a buddy a college buddy of mine
00:06:47
who was also living in the city he was
00:06:48
working in finance I was working in
00:06:50
television we started to throw around
00:06:52
this idea uh you know we we looked at
00:06:54
our social life actually and and
00:06:56
realized that every weekend was becoming
00:06:59
the same it was the same group of guys
00:07:00
going out with the same group of girls
00:07:02
and we were you know the early 20s we
00:07:04
wanted to meet new people we wanted to
00:07:06
meet women we really were sort of afraid
00:07:09
and turned off by the existing options
00:07:11
on on on the web they were you know they
00:07:13
they seemed really just not the way that
00:07:16
we would organically go out and meet
00:07:17
people uh to create this sort of blind
00:07:19
date and we realized we like going out
00:07:21
with each other we feel comfortable
00:07:23
going out with each other and trying to
00:07:24
meet new people and so we started to
00:07:27
talk about this idea of group dating and
00:07:28
the more people we spoke to in our
00:07:30
demographic the more people said that
00:07:32
idea is is brilliant that's such a good
00:07:33
idea and we and we it got to the point
00:07:35
where we couldn't stop thinking about it
00:07:37
and at that point once you know that
00:07:38
you're just you're become obsessed with
00:07:40
a concept you be become obsessed with a
00:07:42
potential business there was just there
00:07:43
was no choice we had to we had to dive
00:07:45
in right and so you just knew because
00:07:47
you were getting obsessed with this idea
00:07:49
that there was no other option there was
00:07:51
no way you're going you were going to go
00:07:52
become a TV writer at this point no I
00:07:54
mean I I I figured you know what I'm
00:07:55
going to give this a chance if it fails
00:07:57
then I can then I'll I'll go back to be
00:07:59
maybe becoming a TV writer but uh I I
00:08:02
wanted to give it a shot yeah so now
00:08:04
given the fact that you're running a
00:08:05
group dating site are you also you
00:08:08
envision yourself becoming a dating Guru
00:08:10
at some point or have you already become
00:08:12
one I don't think I don't think I'm a
00:08:14
guru at anything um but I I believe you
00:08:17
write for The Huffington Post I I have
00:08:18
written a little bit for The Huffington
00:08:19
Post I I do um yeah I I mean I think I'm
00:08:22
understanding a little bit about dating
00:08:23
I think I think really I'm going to
00:08:25
become an Indian dating Guru uh so share
00:08:28
some uh share some tips so for in the
00:08:30
Indian dating scene what are the right
00:08:33
things to do what are sort of the No No
00:08:35
and Indian dating let me see um so I I
00:08:39
think it I think Indian people need to
00:08:41
be a little bit more bold I think um I
00:08:44
think in the past on both sides guys and
00:08:46
girls on both sides yeah I think it's
00:08:48
going to be harder to to to uh convince
00:08:50
the girls to be bold but even the guys
00:08:51
need to be more bold I know you know
00:08:53
both sides I'm convinced after my month
00:08:55
in India and after talking to our
00:08:56
customers just like young people in the
00:08:58
United States young people in India want
00:09:00
to go on dates they want to meet new
00:09:02
people but uh they've they've grown up
00:09:05
in a in a little bit of a more
00:09:07
conservative environment that makes them
00:09:09
a little scared to initiate that
00:09:11
conversation so there's really nothing
00:09:13
my my tip is there's nothing to lose by
00:09:15
initiating a conversation meet new
00:09:17
people and see where it goes I think uh
00:09:19
if you can just take the take the plunge
00:09:21
and say hello to people you can you can
00:09:23
see where you can go from there so who
00:09:25
is this Target customer in India the
00:09:27
Target customer right now are our
00:09:28
average age on the site is about uh
00:09:30
between 23 and 24 years old it's uh it's
00:09:33
recent College grads it's a lot of the
00:09:35
sort of um Urban young people so uh the
00:09:40
biggest cities in in India are where we
00:09:42
find most of our users right and so
00:09:45
given that you know you're launching an
00:09:46
office you're hiring people in India
00:09:48
what do you and having just come back
00:09:50
what do you see as your main challenge
00:09:52
in India going forward from the
00:09:53
management perspective I think operating
00:09:56
a company on a uh you know on two sides
00:09:58
of the world is is going to be a
00:09:59
challenge um and India is uh by far our
00:10:02
biggest market and our primary concern
00:10:04
but it's also not our only Market uh so
00:10:06
we have uh had success and we're having
00:10:09
a lot of early success in in other
00:10:10
markets on that side of the world so I
00:10:12
think um being able to reconcile uh a a
00:10:16
handling a business that's operating in
00:10:18
in many different countries with many
00:10:20
different cultures is going to be our
00:10:21
biggest challenge yeah and do you plan
00:10:24
uh to move to India anytime soon I don't
00:10:26
know if I plan to move there I plan to
00:10:27
spend a lot of time there uh probably
00:10:29
these monthlong trips are are what I'll
00:10:30
do maybe once a quarter and uh if needed
00:10:33
then I'm I'm ready to move there but
00:10:35
we'll see I loved it I loved my trip
00:10:37
there yeah I would love to spend time
00:10:38
there sure well Adam it's been great uh
00:10:41
this is a pleasure talking to you about
00:10:42
the Indian dating scene and also your
00:10:43
startup thanks good luck going forward
00:10:46
thank you so much
00:10:58
thanks
