00:00:10
busy highway in California she was never

seen
00:00:14
again for 3 years the search for her
00:00:18
whereabouts continued but the trail
00:00:20
eventually turned cold so cold that
00:00:23
forensic scientists needed new
00:00:25
techniques to solve it

settled down into a

part-time sales assistant at
00:01:19
Bloomingdales she was very trusting she

just say Dad don't

00:01:40
likes to have fun I know she that's what
00:01:42
she would always say Steve was so much
00:01:45
fun she he made her
00:01:49
laugh on Sunday night June 2nd
00:01:52
1991 Steve and Denise planned to see the
00:01:55
morsy rock band perform in
00:01:58
Englewood but at the last minute Steve
00:02:01
couldn't get off from work disappointed
00:02:04
but undeterred Denise asked a casual
00:02:07
friend Robert Calbert to go with her she
00:02:10
said I'll be home late and I remember
00:02:12
saying well don't be too late you know
00:02:14
cuz I always worry when you're not home
00:02:15
on time oh you know we'll be fine the
00:02:19
night she left she poked her head in the
00:02:20
door and said Di and I we were watching
00:02:23
television just that with that lovely
00:02:25
smile uh you know bye I love you both
00:02:31
after the concert Denise and Rob stopped
00:02:33
at the El Paso Cantina for a
00:02:35
drink where Denise met an old
00:02:37
acquaintance whom we'll call Ross Ross
00:02:41
had had a romantic feelings for her in
00:02:45
the past he did ask her to go with him
00:02:49
that
00:02:50
night he wanted her to go home with him
00:02:53
which she did not
00:02:54
do Denise and Rob left the restaurant
00:02:57
around 1:00 in the morning and Denise
00:03:00
dropped Rob off at his home there was no
00:03:03
kiss between the two of them she dropped
00:03:05
him off and he went in the house and she
00:03:09
left on her way
00:03:10
home Rob was the last known person to
00:03:13
see Denise
00:03:15
Huber I think in the morning when she
00:03:17
was there obviously was there was some
00:03:20
concern but we didn't keep that close of
00:03:22
tabs on her either I mean she was 23
00:03:24
years old and and an adult and uh
00:03:28
totally trustworthy
00:03:30
her abandoned car was found along the
00:03:33
Costa Mesa freeway 3 mil from home with
00:03:36
a flat
00:03:37
tire it didn't look like anything had
00:03:40
occurred at the vehicle it was parked
00:03:42
between two call boxes that were never
00:03:44
used that night in my mind I just knew
00:03:48
something horrible had happened because
00:03:51
Denise wasn't the kind of person that
00:03:53
would just disappear without telling
00:03:56
us the Costa Mesa police dispatched in
00:03:59
instigators to the
00:04:01
scene inside of the car itself appeared
00:04:04
to be clean there was no blood there
00:04:07
there didn't appear to be any Windows
00:04:08
broken there didn't appear to be any
00:04:10
damage to the car her purse and shoes
00:04:13
were gone like she'd gotten out of her
00:04:14
car and left the flashers were on on the
00:04:16
car like she the car had broken down and
00:04:18
she was going to get out and go walk for
00:04:20
help search dogs picked up a scent on
00:04:23
the side of the freeway but soon lost it
00:04:26
police then canvased the neighborhoods
00:04:28
near the highway
00:04:31
but no one had seen her it appeared
00:04:34
Denise Huber had simply
00:04:40
[Music]
00:04:52
vanished it's worse than if I think I
00:04:54
was afraid of for my own
00:04:58
death cuz I was so afraid of what
00:05:00
happened to Denise she was so
00:05:04
precious police used search helicopters
00:05:07
and all other means to look for
00:05:09
23-year-old Denise Huber after her
00:05:12
abandoned car was found along a busy
00:05:16
highway you could hear them from our
00:05:18
house and you know what they're looking
00:05:19
for and you you pray they don't find
00:05:22
what they're looking for because it's
00:05:24
got to be obviously got to be a body
00:05:25
that they're looking
00:05:27
for and uh it's it's horrible it's the
00:05:30
most horrible feeling you could ever
00:05:32
have it's like I couldn't breathe for I
00:05:35
don't know how
00:05:38
long police examined the interior of
00:05:41
Denise's car and found no foreign
00:05:44
fingerprints an analysis of the flat
00:05:47
tire revealed it had not been tampered
00:05:50
with it just blew out from being
00:05:52
underinflated got too hot and the
00:05:54
sidewall failed I just went
00:05:58
flat wild the the physical evidence LED
00:06:01
nowhere police interviewed the last
00:06:04
known person to see Denise her date from
00:06:07
the night before Robert
00:06:09
Calbert Rob could have been infatuated
00:06:13
with her and could have been upset
00:06:15
because there was no romantic contact
00:06:19
between the two of them police also
00:06:22
looked into Denise's relationship with
00:06:24
Steve horox the boyfriend who was
00:06:26
supposed to accompany Denise to the
00:06:28
concert but back out at the last minute
00:06:32
Steve HX was again Cooperative any
00:06:34
information we needed from him he was
00:06:36
always willing to give
00:06:37
it police also Tracked Down Ross the
00:06:41
acquaintance Denise met at the El
00:06:43
Cantina
00:06:45
restaurant Ross was able to put himself
00:06:48
in a alibi situation um to show that he
00:06:51
did not go follow her after she dropped
00:06:55
a Rob off I never gave up hope that
00:06:57
she'd be found alive
00:07:00
uh we did everything from thinking that
00:07:01
she might have had a boyfriend that the
00:07:03
folks didn't know about and maybe uh
00:07:05
left the state left the city
00:07:08
eloped desperate for leads investigators
00:07:12
and Denise's family turned to the media
00:07:16
all I knew was get a picture in front of
00:07:19
people get the story out and the news
00:07:22
media they were wonderful because every
00:07:24
time we have anything going on they
00:07:25
would be there and they'd show it so the
00:07:28
community really it was like it was
00:07:31
their
00:07:33
daughter we made buttons with Denise's
00:07:35
picture that said pray for Denise we had
00:07:38
bumper stickers that all of our police
00:07:40
units carried and were available all
00:07:41
over the community there was a large
00:07:43
Banner that was placed along the 73
00:07:45
freeway here in Costa Mesa the media
00:07:48
attention produced hundreds of tips most
00:07:52
were well-intentioned some were not we'
00:07:55
hear from
00:07:58
psychics who never did know anything I
00:08:02
mean that's that's baloney they they
00:08:05
don't they did not know anything in that
00:08:07
case we'd hear from crackpots we'd hear
00:08:10
from people that would try and get money
00:08:11
from
00:08:13
us for three long years the Hubers lived
00:08:18
in agony waiting to hear something
00:08:21
anything about their daughter one thing
00:08:24
I always remember Linda gisler our lead
00:08:28
Detective I always remember she would
00:08:31
call us cuz you sit there every time the
00:08:33
phone would ring you jump 10 ft in the
00:08:37
air because you think it's that that
00:08:39
phone
00:08:41
call and uh that's the one thing that I
00:08:44
always appreciated from Linda she'd say
00:08:46
we're going home now there won't be
00:08:48
another phone call we'll talk to you
00:08:49
tomorrow and they always she would
00:08:52
always touch base with
00:08:53
us 350 M away in Prescott Arizona a man
00:08:59
living in a well-to-do neighborhood
00:09:01
called local police to report something
00:09:04
suspicious in his neighbor's
00:09:06
driveway it was a rider truck with
00:09:09
California license
00:09:11
plates it had an extension cord coming
00:09:14
out of the back of the
00:09:16
truck the neighbor said it was plugged
00:09:19
into an electrical socket on the side of
00:09:22
the house whatever was inside the truck
00:09:25
was running 24 hours a day a search of
00:09:29
the truck revealed it had been stolen in
00:09:32
[Music]
00:09:35
California inside was an industrialized
00:09:39
freezer in the cargo area and inside the
00:09:43
freezer was a large black garbage bag uh
00:09:47
and and they felt it and believed uh
00:09:49
what they felt was was an arm of a of a
00:09:52
person I recall seeing uh two arms
00:09:56
coming back with the hands handcuffed
00:09:58
and a ring I remember seeing jewelry and
00:10:02
uh I was I was really
00:10:06
shocked and for the medical examiner it
00:10:09
would be the most difficult case she had
00:10:12
ever
00:10:17
[Music]
00:10:22
encountered for the past year a stolen
00:10:25
Rider Truck containing a freezer with a
00:10:28
human body inside had been parked at the
00:10:31
home of 39-year-old John famalaro a
00:10:34
handyman and painter Mr famalaro was
00:10:38
very calm he was very
00:10:40
polite um and he just really didn't have
00:10:43
much to say about it uh but he seemed
00:10:46
kind of indifferent to the whole thing
00:10:48
the contents of the freezer were sent to
00:10:50
the Maricopa County coroner's
00:10:54
office Dr Anne buckolz handled the case
00:10:58
obviously it's a homicide or at least a
00:11:00
hidden body for some reason and because
00:11:03
if it's clandestine nature you're like
00:11:06
okay so we got an evur thing here let's
00:11:08
think homicide let's think the worst and
00:11:10
I said yes it's a female she also had
00:11:13
some female jewelry evidence and long
00:11:16
fingernails the handcuffs were evident
00:11:19
and we didn't see much in the way of
00:11:20
clothing she appeared to be naked
00:11:23
thawing the body would cause rapid
00:11:26
decomposition so Dr buckolz needed to
00:11:29
CCT evidence quickly or lose it forever
00:11:33
I took a clean scalpel handle and
00:11:36
actually scraped some of the watery
00:11:38
fluid into jars and held it that way I
00:11:41
thought well at least we can collect the
00:11:43
specimens it was a sheer luck that we
00:11:46
even got any sperm at all in a woman
00:11:49
who's Frozen 3
00:11:53
years Dr buckolz removed the handcuffs
00:11:57
and defrosted the hands
00:12:00
slowly when they're frozen the skin is
00:12:03
fairly symmetrical and intact until she
00:12:07
starts losing the fluids and then the
00:12:09
skin will start shriveling even in the
00:12:11
fingertips in fact that's where it
00:12:13
starts one of the
00:12:14
first we got all the prints that first
00:12:17
day and they're actually rolled onto a
00:12:19
fingerprint C just as if they were a
00:12:22
person who's being arrested it's the
00:12:24
same process on a dead
00:12:26
person when they entered the prince into
00:12:28
their computer database of missing
00:12:31
persons they immediately found a
00:12:36
match it was Denise Huber who had been
00:12:39
missing for 3
00:12:41
years they were able to do the
00:12:43
fingerprints and that's something I
00:12:45
never even thought of imag I never
00:12:48
imagined that we would have that kind of
00:12:51
evidence after 3
00:12:53
years you have this hole in you know
00:12:56
that in your inside you through your
00:12:58
heart or
00:13:00
whatever and that hole will never go
00:13:02
away it heals up around it the healing
00:13:08
happens but there's no
00:13:12
closure meanwhile John famalaro refused
00:13:16
to explain why Denise's body was in his
00:13:20
freezer 350 Mi away from where she
00:13:25
disappeared so police searched falo's
00:13:28
home and the the home of his mother who
00:13:30
lived next door she was quite taken back
00:13:35
that we uh had also secured what we
00:13:38
found to be her home she knew nothing
00:13:41
about John having girlfriends or who it
00:13:45
might be and basically sat up a lawn
00:13:48
chair across the street and just sat
00:13:50
there and watched us for for
00:13:53
days police found a box marked Christmas
00:13:57
on a shelf in famalaro
00:13:59
garage inside was Denise's bloody
00:14:03
clothing her driver's license and her
00:14:07
high heeled
00:14:08
shoes the shoes were scuffed and damaged
00:14:11
as if she had been dragged across
00:14:14
Highway
00:14:16
Paving and police found credit card
00:14:18
receipts that showed famalaro had bought
00:14:21
the freezer just days after Denise's
00:14:26
disappearance they also discovered blood
00:14:29
stained clothing belonging to John
00:14:32
famalaro they didn't know whose blood it
00:14:34
was they didn't know if it was Denise's
00:14:37
some other persons a mixture Mr
00:14:41
famalaro so they needed a sample of
00:14:43
Denise's blood well we didn't have blood
00:14:46
so we ended up sending them some bone
00:14:48
marrow the DNA extracted from Denise
00:14:51
Huber's bone marrow matched the DNA in
00:14:54
the blood on falo's
00:14:57
clothes in famalaro
00:14:59
basement police found a police officer's
00:15:04
uniform and a
00:15:06
dungeon I think that all showed me he
00:15:09
was just that type of person not the
00:15:12
mild mannered person he was when I spoke
00:15:15
to him he had that very dark violent
00:15:19
other side and uh it was becoming more
00:15:22
and more parent as as the case
00:15:24
progressed on one of his girlfriends
00:15:27
that we talked to said that yeah he had
00:15:29
some weird sexual fantasies one of the
00:15:32
girls had been
00:15:35
handcuffed
00:15:36
um and left exposed uh naked in handcuff
00:15:41
left exposed to an open window the
00:15:44
evidence implicated famalaro in The
00:15:46
Disappearance and death of Denise Huber
00:15:48
but it did not explain how she died we
00:15:53
took off two or three black plastic bags
00:15:56
that had encased the whole body and
00:15:59
inside that were some smaller white
00:16:01
plastic bags which covered the head and
00:16:04
when we removed that and we started
00:16:07
defrosting her we actually found a a gag
00:16:10
type device over her face and over her
00:16:13
mouth area uh was a piece of duct tape
00:16:16
that had been taped over her upper mouth
00:16:19
nose
00:16:20
area Dr buckholtz discovered that
00:16:24
Denise's skull had been severely
00:16:27
damaged Dr Laura ful Genetti a forensic
00:16:30
anthropologist was asked to reconstruct
00:16:33
the skull for further analysis you look
00:16:36
for parts that go together naturally and
00:16:38
you start with the Vault or the top
00:16:40
round part of the head and then you
00:16:43
proceed towards the face and the reason
00:16:44
I do it that way is because the face
00:16:46
typically has the smallest most
00:16:48
complicated pieces and you want to have
00:16:50
your framework built so that when you
00:16:52
get to the face you have something to
00:16:54
put the face back
00:16:55
onto the forensic analysis would reveal
00:16:59
not only how Denise Huber died but
00:17:06
[Music]
00:17:11
where after a three-year search Denise
00:17:14
Huber's body was found in a freezer in
00:17:18
Arizona forensic investigators
00:17:21
reconstructed her skull in an effort to
00:17:24
understand how she
00:17:26
died you can see pattern injuries of two
00:17:29
different varieties indicating two
00:17:31
different weapons were used and you can
00:17:33
also see little pieces of plastic that
00:17:35
are caught in those fractures that told
00:17:38
us that the bags were in place when she
00:17:41
received the blows to the
00:17:43
head and Dr F janetti discovered Denise
00:17:47
had been hit 31
00:17:50
times it's horrifying and if I stopped
00:17:53
too long to think about what how she
00:17:55
felt when she was by the freeway I'm
00:17:57
paralyzed and I can't do my job
00:17:59
so I don't I don't think about that
00:18:01
until it's all over and done with for me
00:18:03
it's a matter of here's the puzzle my
00:18:06
job is to put the puzzle together and
00:18:07
interpret the puzzle and then I can go
00:18:10
home and and cry in the
00:18:12
shower the Seaman found on Denise's
00:18:15
clothing matched John fero's DNA profile
00:18:20
she was innocent an innocent victim and
00:18:24
it could have been anybody's sister it
00:18:26
could have been you it could have been
00:18:27
your sister your friend
00:18:29
and and that's scary it really hurts you
00:18:31
emotionally at that point when you
00:18:33
realize that I'll be honest I won't
00:18:35
drive on the
00:18:37
interstate and and allow anyone to help
00:18:40
me because of
00:18:43
this police also discovered that John
00:18:46
famalaro was working in Newport Beach
00:18:49
California at the time Denise
00:18:53
disappeared he had rented the front
00:18:55
portion of this warehouse for his
00:18:58
painting business bu they talked to
00:19:00
people who rented the unit after he had
00:19:02
uh moved out and abandoned it about what
00:19:05
the unit what condition the unit was in
00:19:07
and uh they pointed us to this area in
00:19:10
the corner where they found a a large
00:19:13
brown stain that washed out with the
00:19:14
hose and we thought well we know dried
00:19:16
blood is very solof and water it could
00:19:18
be washed
00:19:19
away initial tests revealed nothing
00:19:23
investigators decided to wait until dark
00:19:26
and use luminol which flues or glows
00:19:31
when it comes into contact with the iron
00:19:33
component in blood we sprayed it out of
00:19:36
a little hand sprayer eventually we
00:19:39
checked the whole warehouse and the only
00:19:41
thing we ever found was just that blood
00:19:42
in the corner of the
00:19:46
warehouse the DNA from those blood
00:19:48
stains matched Denise Huber's
00:19:52
DNA and the nail gun found in the
00:19:56
warehouse matched the indent ations in
00:19:59
Denise's
00:20:01
skull based on the forensic evidence
00:20:05
prosecutors believe that when Denise's
00:20:07
tire went flat famalaro stopped and
00:20:10
offered to
00:20:13
help what happened there I don't know I
00:20:17
I think I have a flat tire I don't know
00:20:19
see if I can
00:20:23
[Music]
00:20:26
help at some point he over powered her
00:20:29
and took her to his Warehouse a few
00:20:31
miles
00:20:33
away there he killed
00:20:37
her he stored the body in a freezer he
00:20:40
bought a few days after he killed
00:20:43
Denise 2 years later he stole the ryer
00:20:47
truck and took the freezer with Denise's
00:20:50
body in it with him when he moved to
00:20:54
Arizona he kept the truck in his
00:20:56
driveway with the freezer running
00:20:58
running
00:21:00
constantly he's kind of a sick guy
00:21:02
that's his that's his thing John has uh
00:21:07
been violent to other people and it's
00:21:09
it's escalated up to the point of murder
00:21:12
but uh I don't think Denise has been the
00:21:14
only
00:21:15
one on June 20th
00:21:19
1997 6 years after Denise disappeared
00:21:23
John famalaro was tried and convicted of
00:21:26
first deegree murder
00:21:28
he was sentenced to
00:21:30
death forensics were it was challenged
00:21:33
every step of the way here in court even
00:21:37
before court I think a lot of it went to
00:21:39
the state supreme court but every
00:21:42
challenge was beat back because of great
00:21:45
forensics and great police work I wanted
00:21:49
to know the truth and some of it was
00:21:52
horrible but I'd rather have the answers
00:21:55
than just be wondering in my mind
00:21:57
because sometimes you imagine
00:22:00
things as bad or worse than what they
00:22:03
were this really is the way it's
00:22:06
supposed to be done and then it makes
00:22:07
you work harder on the next one and when
00:22:09
you're about to throw your hands up in
00:22:10
despair you think Denise Huber you did
00:22:13
that case you got it reconstructed keep
00:22:15
at it there is an answer here
