March 05, 2021 / 21:19

This episode covers the case of Julie Buskin, a college student who went missing and was later found murdered. Key topics include the timeline of her disappearance, the investigation, and the eventual arrest of Anthony Sanchez.

Julie Buskin, a 21-year-old dance student at the University of Oklahoma, was last seen after dropping off a friend at the airport. Her parents reported her missing when they arrived to help her move home and found her apartment empty.

Witnesses reported hearing screams and seeing a suspicious vehicle near her apartment complex. Julie's body was discovered in a lake, showing signs of a violent crime, including a gunshot wound and evidence of sexual assault.

Despite extensive investigations, including a DNA dragnet involving over 200 men, the case went cold until a man named Anthony Sanchez was arrested for a different crime. His DNA was eventually linked to the evidence found at the crime scene.

Sanchez was charged with Julie's murder, with prosecutors stating he abducted her at gunpoint and later killed her. He was sentenced to death, bringing some closure to the case.

TL;DR

The episode details Julie Buskin's murder and the investigation leading to Anthony Sanchez's arrest and conviction.

up next
00:00:06
my wife heard a really awful screen from
00:00:08
our apartment complex
00:00:10
a college co-ed goes missing and police
00:00:12
suspect it's foul play
00:00:14
it's pretty brazen could have been a
00:00:16
peeping tom could have been a car
00:00:17
burglar
00:00:19
a witness thinks he sees the victim's
00:00:21
car but doesn't get a good look at the
00:00:22
driver
00:00:23
this guy kept looking at him in that
00:00:24
rearview mirror he would look at people
00:00:26
on the side of the street and wonder i
00:00:28
wonder if that could be julie's killer
00:00:30
for eight years the mystery goes
00:00:32
unsolved until
00:00:33
a pair of shoes and the cell phone call
00:00:36
give new life
00:00:38
to a very cold case this did not strike
00:00:41
me
00:00:42
as a run-of-the-mill murder
00:00:53
for 21-year-old julie buskin a
00:00:56
bachelor's degree in dance from the
00:00:58
university of oklahoma
00:01:00
was the culmination of a lifelong dream
00:01:03
julie always knew she wanted to be a
00:01:05
ballet dancer from the time she went to
00:01:07
a recital of her friends in first grade
00:01:10
her goal was to teach children
00:01:13
possibly even special ed children and
00:01:15
have a dance studio
00:01:18
julie completed all of the courses for
00:01:21
her bachelor's degree by christmas
00:01:23
so her parents drove from arkansas to
00:01:26
help julie move her belongings home
00:01:30
when they got to her apartment julie
00:01:33
wasn't there
00:01:34
and neither was her car a police officer
00:01:37
came to me and asked who we were
00:01:39
ask if we were the buskins said yes and
00:01:42
he said
00:01:43
you need to contact the ou police
00:01:44
department your daughter's missing
00:01:47
and mary jean said you know something's
00:01:49
bad wrong and i said you know she's
00:01:51
somewhere
00:01:51
everything it'll be okay police learned
00:01:55
that julie took her girlfriend to the
00:01:57
airport around four o'clock that morning
00:01:59
and told her friend she was going back
00:02:02
to her apartment
00:02:03
and that was the last that julie was
00:02:05
seen by any of her friends or family
00:02:08
around 5 30 someone in julie's apartment
00:02:12
building called police
00:02:15
yeah we were just sleeping and my wife
00:02:18
heard a really
00:02:19
strange like really awful screen from
00:02:22
our parking lot of our apartment complex
00:02:24
do you see anything outside no i'm kind
00:02:27
of afraid to go outside actually
00:02:29
one of the neighbors heard a male voice
00:02:31
say shut up
00:02:33
get in the car several of the neighbors
00:02:36
heard a woman scream
00:02:39
one of the neighbors heard a car leaving
00:02:42
the scene
00:02:42
i believe the scream that was reported
00:02:44
to the norman police department
00:02:46
at that time in the morning probably was
00:02:47
the scream of julie buskin i have no way
00:02:49
of proving that but i believe it to be
00:02:51
so
00:02:53
12 hours after she disappeared julie
00:02:56
buskin's body was found on the bank of
00:02:59
the lake
00:03:00
about 15 miles from her apartment
00:03:03
she was in the water from about the
00:03:05
waist up her hands were tied behind her
00:03:08
back
00:03:08
tied with a pair of shoelaces she had
00:03:11
been shot
00:03:12
once execution style the gunshot wound
00:03:15
to the back of her head
00:03:16
was very obvious it was a contact wound
00:03:20
meaning the pistols barrel was in actual
00:03:24
contact
00:03:24
with her scalp and there were signs
00:03:28
of sexual assault the evidence would
00:03:31
certainly indicate
00:03:32
that her pants had been pulled down at
00:03:34
some point in time
00:03:37
then i got mad as hell and i went
00:03:39
outside
00:03:41
and i cussed at god i wake up it's mad
00:03:46
you feel very helpless
00:03:49
there's just nothing you can do nothing
00:03:53
and nothing was going to help
00:03:57
police hope that evidence at the scene
00:04:00
would lead them to julie's killer
00:04:03
[Music]
00:04:07
julie buskin had many friends at the
00:04:10
university
00:04:11
police interviewed as many as possible
00:04:13
to see if anyone
00:04:15
could provide useful information julie
00:04:18
had lots of
00:04:19
friend boys but they weren't boyfriends
00:04:22
and
00:04:23
and that was she just wasn't i don't
00:04:24
think ready for that i don't think she
00:04:25
had time for it first of all right
00:04:27
right at that point i wasn't over any
00:04:29
boyfriend troubles that she'd had i
00:04:31
wasn't aware of any
00:04:32
bad breakups or anything like that
00:04:35
police found julie's apartment in
00:04:37
perfect order
00:04:38
there were no signs of a struggle they
00:04:41
found julie's car
00:04:42
in an apartment complex just one block
00:04:46
away
00:04:47
it was a little eerie knowing that that
00:04:49
vehicle had been sitting
00:04:51
right across the street in another
00:04:53
complex
00:04:54
probably since whoever had used it had
00:04:57
dropped it off and been sitting there
00:04:58
all day waiting to be discovered
00:05:00
red sand on the floor of her car looked
00:05:03
like the sand from the banks of the lake
00:05:05
where her body was discovered
00:05:08
that struck me as bizarre that uh
00:05:10
whoever had
00:05:12
abducted her had uh then brought the
00:05:15
the vehicle back why if you commit a
00:05:18
crime like this
00:05:20
uh you want to get rid of the car
00:05:22
obviously but you don't want to
00:05:24
take a chance of returning almost to the
00:05:27
literally to the scene of the abduction
00:05:29
there was no blood inside the car and no
00:05:33
obvious signs of a struggle
00:05:36
investigators could find
00:05:38
no foreign hairs fibers or prints
00:05:41
we knew immediately that the cell phone
00:05:43
was missing and
00:05:44
several things out of her ring julie had
00:05:47
on an opal ring
00:05:48
and the girls knew she had that on and
00:05:49
it was missing
00:05:51
julie's cell phone records indicated
00:05:54
someone had used her phone
00:05:56
after her death there was a call for the
00:05:59
weather forecast
00:06:00
and one to a number not in service at
00:06:04
the time
00:06:06
at the lake investigators discovered
00:06:10
possible evidence in the sand near
00:06:13
julie's body there were two sets of
00:06:15
prints that went down to the lake
00:06:17
only one set returned one set appeared
00:06:20
to match
00:06:21
julie's shoes the other didn't that set
00:06:25
we believe belonged to the person that
00:06:27
killed
00:06:28
julie buskin a strong wind had blown
00:06:32
sand into the shoe prints
00:06:33
obscuring some of the tread pattern even
00:06:36
so
00:06:37
analysts found an identifiable pattern
00:06:41
consistent with a size 9 men's
00:06:44
nike running shoe from the photograph
00:06:46
that we sent the nike corporation
00:06:48
they were able to identify the specific
00:06:51
shoe
00:06:52
that they believe made this impression
00:06:54
in the sand
00:06:55
it was a nike air 2 running shoe
00:06:59
about 20 feet from the body
00:07:02
investigators found
00:07:03
a crumpled pink leotard with the
00:07:06
initials
00:07:07
jb on the label it was julie's
00:07:10
it had material on it that turned out to
00:07:13
be
00:07:14
seminal fluid the leotard was sent for
00:07:17
dna testing
00:07:19
an autopsy confirmed julie was shot to
00:07:22
death
00:07:22
with a single 22-caliber bullet
00:07:26
ballistics experts were able to
00:07:28
determine that it had been
00:07:30
fired from a distinctive gun
00:07:33
the projectile had 16 lands and grooves
00:07:35
with a right hand twist
00:07:37
and that's a little bit uncommon it
00:07:38
allowed me to narrow the
00:07:40
number of firearm brands down to just
00:07:42
just a handful of possibilities
00:07:45
research showed only six companies made
00:07:48
22 caliber handguns
00:07:49
with this combination of lands and
00:07:52
grooves
00:07:55
despite the leads and a seventy thousand
00:07:58
dollar reward
00:07:59
there were no significant breaks in the
00:08:01
case you began to believe
00:08:03
this sort of break in the case was never
00:08:06
going
00:08:07
to happen there was a great fear with
00:08:10
law enforcement that
00:08:11
if this crime were not solved if this
00:08:13
person were not taken off the street
00:08:15
that there would be other other
00:08:18
homicides that we would be
00:08:19
investigating but a month later after
00:08:22
seeing a picture of julie buskin's car
00:08:24
on the news a man called police to say
00:08:27
he might have seen
00:08:28
her killer on the morning of julie's
00:08:31
murder
00:08:32
he saw a car like hers pull out in front
00:08:35
of him and they almost collided
00:08:37
[Applause]
00:08:38
this was near the lake where julie was
00:08:41
killed
00:08:43
it made him mad he stayed right on the
00:08:46
little red car that was
00:08:47
speeding quite rapidly he got a little
00:08:49
road rage going
00:08:52
he followed the red car for about five
00:08:54
miles
00:08:55
he's watching him through the rearview
00:08:56
mirror he was that astute to realize
00:08:59
that something's not right here
00:09:00
and so he kept watching because the guy
00:09:02
kept looking at him kept looking at him
00:09:04
in that rearview mirror
00:09:05
the witness wanted to describe the
00:09:07
individual
00:09:08
but wasn't sure he could when you view
00:09:11
this person in your mind
00:09:13
what's the first thing that pops up is
00:09:15
the hairstyle is it the body structure
00:09:18
forensic artist harvey pratt showed the
00:09:21
witness
00:09:21
examples of each facial feature trying
00:09:24
to get a reaction
00:09:26
he didn't realize he actually was a
00:09:27
witness to something until
00:09:30
someone tweaks his memory his recall
00:09:32
that's what i refer to as a
00:09:34
disassociated witness
00:09:36
slowly a portrait emerged
00:09:40
of a young man possibly a college
00:09:42
student possibly hispanic
00:09:44
with long black hair and a muscular
00:09:48
build
00:09:49
this was eventful and so he was able to
00:09:51
focus on what it was because
00:09:53
this guy almost ran over him i remember
00:09:55
being very excited when that profile
00:09:57
came out of course
00:09:58
you know i'm pretty literal of a person
00:10:00
and so i
00:10:01
expected that looks just like the guy
00:10:03
and they're going to have him in no time
00:10:05
because now they know what he looks like
00:10:07
or did they
00:10:11
[Music]
00:10:15
[Applause]
00:10:17
a witness was able to describe the man
00:10:19
he saw driving julie buskin's car
00:10:22
on the morning of her murder the
00:10:25
composite sketch
00:10:27
was broadcast repeatedly by the local
00:10:29
media in oklahoma
00:10:31
when you believe it's a stranger as
00:10:33
opposed to an acquaintance it certainly
00:10:35
broadens the investigation and rather
00:10:38
than a few suspects you're now looking
00:10:40
at hundreds of thousands of suspects
00:10:42
but no one recognized him and the case
00:10:46
eventually went cold
00:10:50
we would drive down the street and look
00:10:52
at people on the side of the street and
00:10:53
wonder
00:10:54
i wonder if that could be julie's killer
00:10:56
he was walking around
00:10:57
he walked around for a while so we may
00:11:00
have passed him somewhere along the line
00:11:03
then four and a half years after the
00:11:06
murder
00:11:07
police received a letter from a female
00:11:09
inmate at the oklahoma county jail
00:11:12
she said an old acquaintance 23 year old
00:11:15
dennis sturmer
00:11:17
might have murdered julie buskin sturmer
00:11:20
a construction worker had no criminal
00:11:23
record but at the time of the murder
00:11:25
he lived only four blocks from julie's
00:11:28
apartment
00:11:29
and he bore a resemblance to the
00:11:32
composite sketch
00:11:35
police tracked him down he refused to
00:11:38
answer questions
00:11:39
and he wouldn't provide his dna sample
00:11:42
so police had to get a court order to
00:11:45
collect his dna
00:11:47
after almost five years it looked as if
00:11:51
the case might
00:11:52
finally be solved his dna profile
00:11:56
was very very close to
00:11:59
the sample that was taken off the
00:12:01
leotards
00:12:02
and off the underwear that she was
00:12:04
wearing at the time
00:12:06
but unfortunately being very very close
00:12:09
is not a match and unless it's an exact
00:12:13
match
00:12:13
they're excluded so mr sturmer was
00:12:16
excluded as a suspect in the case
00:12:19
but sturmer's profile was so similar it
00:12:22
opened up a whole new avenue
00:12:24
of potential suspects the chemist at the
00:12:27
time
00:12:28
felt so strongly that the dna was so
00:12:31
close
00:12:32
that it was their opinion that it could
00:12:34
possibly be a relative
00:12:36
of this individual which caused law
00:12:39
enforcement to
00:12:40
look at any relatives that this person
00:12:41
might have which they did
00:12:44
sturmer's only immediate living male
00:12:47
relative was his brother
00:12:49
and his dna didn't match
00:12:52
again the case went cold
00:12:56
i think as years went on and we didn't
00:12:59
have an answer
00:13:00
we had pretty well accepted the fact
00:13:02
that we might not live long enough
00:13:04
to know who did this to our daughter
00:13:06
investigators
00:13:07
also performed a dna dragnet
00:13:11
they asked every male julie knew from
00:13:14
school
00:13:14
and all males in her neighborhood with a
00:13:17
criminal record
00:13:18
to voluntarily provide a dna sample
00:13:22
virtually everyone that she came in
00:13:25
contact with
00:13:26
became a suspect everyone who was asked
00:13:29
complied more than 200 people were
00:13:32
tested in one of the largest dna
00:13:35
dragnets in u.s history
00:13:38
but no one matched after 200 plus
00:13:42
dna tests with no match
00:13:45
you begin to get pessimistic about
00:13:47
whether this case is ever going
00:13:49
to be solved
00:13:51
[Music]
00:13:55
then six years after julie's murder a
00:13:58
man named
00:13:59
anthony sanchez was arrested for the
00:14:02
rape of his former girlfriend
00:14:05
as with all alleged sex offenders
00:14:07
sanchez provided his dna sample for
00:14:10
testing
00:14:11
while that was underway investigators
00:14:14
noticed
00:14:15
some curious facts about sanchez's
00:14:18
background
00:14:19
first at the time of julie buskin's
00:14:22
murder he lived
00:14:23
only one mile away from julie buskin's
00:14:26
apartment
00:14:28
when police tracked down his former
00:14:30
associates
00:14:31
[Music]
00:14:32
one of them an old girlfriend showed
00:14:35
police her
00:14:35
diary for the month julie was murdered
00:14:39
there is an entry in i believe it's
00:14:42
october
00:14:43
of 1996 where she wrote
00:14:48
anthony bought me a new set of nike
00:14:51
shoes and he bought the same style
00:14:54
but boys sanchez wore a size
00:14:58
9 shoe this was proof
00:15:01
sanchez owned a pair of sneakers the
00:15:03
same brand
00:15:04
and size as the shoe impressions found
00:15:07
next to julie's body and there was one
00:15:11
more clue
00:15:12
someone presumably the killer used
00:15:15
julie's cell phone
00:15:17
after her murder
00:15:20
the number dialed was one digit off from
00:15:23
the phone number of a girl sanchez was
00:15:25
dating at the time
00:15:27
one of anthony's former friends a young
00:15:30
lady
00:15:31
that lived here in norman had a
00:15:32
telephone at her house
00:15:36
and that telephone number shows up on
00:15:38
julie's
00:15:39
phone records after she's dead
00:15:43
was it possible that sanchez tried to
00:15:46
call the girl's number from memory
00:15:48
but got one digit wrong
00:15:52
that was pretty good circumstantial
00:15:54
evidence even without the dna
00:15:57
finally sanchez's girlfriend told police
00:16:00
he had
00:16:01
an unusual habit they had received
00:16:04
information
00:16:04
from one of sanchez's girlfriends
00:16:08
that he and his father like to fire
00:16:12
22 caliber firearms
00:16:15
into the wall uh at their duplex
00:16:18
sort of an odd father-and-son type of
00:16:20
bonding
00:16:22
since julie was murdered with a 22
00:16:24
caliber weapon
00:16:25
investigators got a warrant and used
00:16:28
portable x-ray machines
00:16:30
to check the walls of the duplex where
00:16:32
sanchez lived with his girlfriend
00:16:36
when that turned up nothing they tore
00:16:38
down the walls
00:16:40
again nothing after the police had run
00:16:44
rough shot over the apartment and
00:16:45
created absolute mess in there
00:16:47
the landlord went back in and started
00:16:50
cleaning it up he had some what a shop
00:16:52
vac
00:16:53
he cleaned up and as he was emptying out
00:16:55
the bag
00:16:56
what falls out but a bullet a 22 caliber
00:17:00
bullet a ballistics test
00:17:04
showed the bullet was consistent with
00:17:06
the highly
00:17:07
distinctive one retrieved during julie's
00:17:10
autopsy
00:17:12
finally when tested anthony sanchez's
00:17:16
dna was compared to the biological
00:17:19
sample
00:17:20
from julie's leotard the results
00:17:24
were no surprise
00:17:29
the morning that the police called and
00:17:31
told us they had a match
00:17:33
to be honest it's still it's kind of
00:17:35
foggy obviously we were excited
00:17:38
we weren't sure at this point if that
00:17:41
day would ever come
00:17:42
when his dna matched the biological
00:17:45
material
00:17:46
from the crime scene anthony sanchez was
00:17:49
arrested
00:17:50
and charged with the murder of julie
00:17:52
buskin
00:17:54
sanchez was 18 years old at the time of
00:17:57
the crime
00:17:57
and lived only one mile from julie's
00:18:00
apartment
00:18:03
prosecutors said sanchez was an
00:18:06
accomplished thief and was stealing
00:18:08
christmas presents from parked cars on
00:18:10
the night of the crime
00:18:14
and that's when he saw julie buskin
00:18:17
when she returned from driving her
00:18:19
friend to the airport
00:18:20
[Music]
00:18:27
investigators said sanchez abducted
00:18:29
julie at gunpoint
00:18:30
forced her back into the car and made
00:18:33
her drive 15 miles to the lake
00:18:42
there he sexually assaulted her
00:18:45
and shot her execution style
00:19:01
sanchez left his dna his size
00:19:05
nine shoe impressions in the sand and
00:19:07
afterwards
00:19:08
tracked sand into julie's car
00:19:12
as sanchez left the area
00:19:14
[Applause]
00:19:16
he cut off another driver who got a good
00:19:19
enough
00:19:20
look at his face to describe him to
00:19:22
police
00:19:26
sanchez used julie's cell phone to call
00:19:29
his girlfriend
00:19:30
he misdialed one number
00:19:33
had he called the right number he most
00:19:37
likely would have been caught within
00:19:39
days
00:19:40
nevertheless the scientific evidence
00:19:43
eventually
00:19:44
caught up with him they said the dna
00:19:46
that was left at the crime scene
00:19:48
is what's going to convict this guy and
00:19:50
we're going to catch him
00:19:52
and they did anthony sanchez was tried
00:19:57
and convicted of julie buskin's murder
00:20:01
and sentenced to death this was a
00:20:03
senseless
00:20:04
killing by a cold-blooded killer
00:20:08
that had no respect for human life
00:20:11
whatsoever he didn't kill julie he just
00:20:14
did
00:20:15
and that's evil that's just evil
00:20:19
often in the face of senseless violence
00:20:22
the only hope for the family is justice
00:20:27
increasingly science helps provide it
00:20:31
in cases like this where there's
00:20:32
absolutely no witnesses except the
00:20:34
perpetrator and your victim who's now
00:20:36
deceased there's no way these could be
00:20:38
solved without forensics
00:20:40
how do you account for a crime like this
00:20:43
for what there's no money there's not a
00:20:47
crime of
00:20:48
passion why why do this
00:20:51
there's only one man who can answer that
00:20:53
question and he's on death row in
00:20:54
oklahoma
00:20:56
i think that julie's more at peace and
00:20:58
that maybe somebody may think i'm a
00:21:00
little crazy but
00:21:01
i do believe that julie is at peace
00:21:03
because she knows we're at peace
00:21:06
and i believe that with all my heart
00:21:18
you
