Forensic Files - Season 7, Episode 20 - Telltale Tracks - Full Episode

December 10, 2021 / 22:37

This episode covers the 1996 disappearance and murder of Amy Willard in Philadelphia, including details about the crime scene, suspects, and forensic evidence.

Amy Willard's abandoned car was discovered on Route 476 with signs of a violent struggle, including blood and a tire iron. Her mother, Gail Willard, reported that Amy had gone to Smokey Joe's bar before she vanished.

Police identified Andrew Kobach as a suspect after he claimed to have seen something suspicious near the crime scene. However, his DNA did not match the evidence found on Amy.

Arthur Beaumar, a convicted murderer, became a prime suspect after a series of attempted carjackings. Evidence linked him to both Amy's murder and the disappearance of another woman, Maria Cabuenos.

Forensic analysis ultimately connected Beaumar to the crime through DNA and tire impressions, leading to his conviction for murder and rape.

TL;DR

The episode details the murder of Amy Willard, focusing on forensic evidence and the investigation that led to Arthur Beaumar's conviction.

in philadelphia
00:00:07
a woman's car was found abandoned on the
00:00:10
side of a busy highway still running
00:00:14
but the driver was missing
00:00:17
at the scene police found several clues
00:00:20
but was there enough forensic evidence
00:00:24
to solve the mystery

route 476 is one of several highways
00:00:58
that links philadelphia to the suburbs
00:01:00
[Music]
00:01:02
hundreds of thousands of commuters
00:01:03
travel that road every day
00:01:08
on june 20th 1996 at two o'clock in the
00:01:11
morning an off-duty ambulance crew
00:01:13
spotted an abandoned car along an exit
00:01:16
ramp of 476.
00:01:20
the engine was running the lights were
00:01:22
on the radio was blaring the driver's
00:01:25
door was open
00:01:26
but no one was inside
00:01:29
there was a tire iron found in front of
00:01:31
the car i found some blood in front of
00:01:33
the car i found a stone with blood on in
00:01:36
front of the car and on the guardrail
00:01:38
there appeared to be some blood splatter
00:01:40
next to the car
00:01:42
we later had an interpretation done of
00:01:44
the blood pattern in front of the car
00:01:46
and we learned
00:01:47
that it appeared as though someone had
00:01:49
been laying on the ground for a brief
00:01:51
time in front of the car the crime scene
00:01:53
says that this person was violently
00:01:55
attacked in a very
00:01:57
fast mode meaning that they were
00:01:59
hit very quickly
00:02:01
as far as the violence was concerned and
00:02:03
then they were extricated from that site
00:02:05
very quickly this person didn't stay
00:02:07
around long
00:02:09
next to the car was a tire impression
00:02:11
which was photographed for analysis
00:02:16
a forensic expert then made a cast of
00:02:18
the impression which was sent to the
00:02:20
state crime lab
00:02:26
[Music]
00:02:27
the automobile was registered to gail
00:02:30
willard but had been driven that night
00:02:32
by her daughter 22 year old amy willard
00:02:35
a star soccer and lacrosse player at
00:02:38
george mason university in virginia
00:02:42
[Applause]
00:02:45
amy was spending the summer at home with
00:02:47
her family who lived just a few miles
00:02:49
from where the car was discovered
00:02:53
amy told her mother she was going to
00:02:55
smokey joe's bar
00:03:08
and a friend said amy left the bar alone
00:03:11
at 1 30 in the morning
00:03:13
she had never been to smokey joe's
00:03:15
before when she came home she very
00:03:17
rarely went out and met people because
00:03:19
of the fact the time constraints on when
00:03:20
she was home when she was home she kind
00:03:22
of stayed around here and we hung out
00:03:24
together and things like that
00:03:27
damage to the vehicle led police to
00:03:30
think that amy may have been the victim
00:03:32
of a carjacking
00:03:34
there was an abrasion on the back bumper
00:03:37
that was not there when amy drove off in
00:03:39
the car i noticed it because it was my
00:03:42
car and i knew everything about my car
00:03:44
and i had pointed it out to the police
00:03:47
possibly at that traffic light right
00:03:48
where she's going to turn off the 476
00:03:50
off ramp onto the route one on-ramp
00:03:52
there's a traffic light right there i
00:03:54
believe that that's where he would have
00:03:56
bumped her car she immediately pulls
00:03:58
over onto the ramp gets out of her car
00:04:00
to exchange information
00:04:02
the next morning about a half mile from
00:04:05
where amy's car was abandoned
00:04:07
police found a pair of panties and
00:04:09
sneakers
00:04:11
they brought them down for me to
00:04:12
identify them and they definitely were
00:04:14
her sneakers and panties they definitely
00:04:16
were
00:04:17
the panties weren't soiled with dirt
00:04:20
they weren't wet they were dry
00:04:22
as were the shoes
00:04:24
it appeared to me as though those items
00:04:25
had been brought back after the rain
00:04:27
which would have
00:04:28
meant that they were brought back after
00:04:29
her car was found
00:04:32
an indication the abductor had returned
00:04:34
to the scene of the crime to dispose of
00:04:37
the items
00:04:40
detectives screened video surveillance
00:04:42
tapes from stores and bank atms near
00:04:45
smokey joe's bar
00:04:47
but amy had not stopped at any of these
00:04:49
locations
00:04:51
[Music]
00:04:52
then
00:04:53
an unexpected lead fell right into
00:04:56
investigators laps
00:05:02
amy willard's car was found abandoned on
00:05:04
a blue route off ramp in marvel township
00:05:07
after amy willard disappeared police
00:05:10
appealed to the community asking anyone
00:05:12
with information to come forward
00:05:14
one of those who responded was 23 year
00:05:17
old andrew kobach who said he had been
00:05:20
driving on route 476 on the night amy
00:05:23
disappeared and saw something suspicious
00:05:25
in the vicinity of amy's car
00:05:30
police knew kobach
00:05:32
years earlier he had been accused of
00:05:34
impersonating a police officer
00:05:37
[Music]
00:05:40
police say kobach would turn a siren on
00:05:43
instruct the driver to pull over and
00:05:45
then show the driver a badge
00:05:52
a motorist turned him in but he was
00:05:54
never charged
00:05:58
kobach immediately became a suspect
00:06:01
since investigators now thought he might
00:06:04
have done the same thing with amy
00:06:06
willard
00:06:08
by virtue of placing himself back at the
00:06:09
scene it was consistent with what is
00:06:12
oftentimes a characteristic of people
00:06:15
who commit crimes
00:06:16
that are being investigated is out of
00:06:18
curiosity or some other kind of
00:06:20
motivation
00:06:21
they return to the vicinity of the crime
00:06:24
in essence to get a feel for what's
00:06:25
going on
00:06:28
less than 24 hours after amy willard
00:06:31
disappeared
00:06:32
children playing in a deserted lot in
00:06:34
north philadelphia discovered
00:06:36
the nude body of a woman
00:06:39
i snitched and i smelled something and
00:06:42
then i i'm sorry and i ran
00:06:46
there was a nike logo tattooed on her
00:06:48
ankle which amy's parents
00:06:51
identified
00:06:53
that was the hardest day of the whole
00:06:54
thing not knowing where she was
00:06:57
there was more of a relief when they
00:06:59
found her body in philadelphia
00:07:02
that i had her back
00:07:03
that we could find out help to find out
00:07:06
what happened to her no one could bring
00:07:08
her back to life but at least i had her
00:07:11
an autopsy revealed that the five foot
00:07:14
two 120 pound woman died from multiple
00:07:17
blunt force injuries to her head and
00:07:20
face
00:07:22
the medical examiner estimated she died
00:07:24
at seven o'clock in the morning about
00:07:26
five hours after she was abducted this
00:07:30
is a crime of momentary passion or crime
00:07:33
between two people that know each other
00:07:34
but somebody that actually
00:07:36
hunted down stalk somebody committed the
00:07:38
murder the crime and then went to
00:07:41
another location to try to deposit the
00:07:44
evidence and throw the authorities off
00:07:46
the trail
00:07:47
the examiner determined that amy had
00:07:50
been sexually assaulted
00:07:53
dna evidence from the rape test kit was
00:07:55
sent to the forensics lab for testing
00:07:58
we had essentially the
00:08:00
genetic fingerprint of our
00:08:03
of our murderer
00:08:05
and we just needed to identify that
00:08:07
person
00:08:08
[Music]
00:08:11
the coroner also described
00:08:14
an unusual pattern on amy's upper body
00:08:18
but police weren't sure
00:08:20
what caused the mark
00:08:24
meanwhile forensic experts completed
00:08:26
their analysis of the tire impressions
00:08:29
found at the crime scene
00:08:31
they were from a firestone 440 13-inch
00:08:34
tire often found on small compact cars
00:08:40
kobach's automobile did not have those
00:08:42
tires and the search of his home turned
00:08:44
up nothing
00:08:46
kobach was officially eliminated as a
00:08:49
suspect when his dna profile did not
00:08:52
match the semen from the rape test kit
00:08:57
with no other leads
00:08:59
the killer's trail turned cold
00:09:03
then
00:09:04
one year after amy willard's death
00:09:06
19-year-old patty jordan reported an
00:09:09
attempted carjacking to police
00:09:12
she said it was a man who had followed
00:09:14
her after she left a local nightclub
00:09:17
and at the next light that car must have
00:09:18
made the light and i didn't and that's
00:09:20
where he hit my car
00:09:23
i just went
00:09:24
and he motioned for me to pull over
00:09:27
and i was like you hit my car and he was
00:09:30
just like pull over pull over and it
00:09:32
turned green and i just kept on going
00:09:33
and my headlights shown on his license
00:09:35
plate and that's how i got his license
00:09:37
plate
00:09:40
fortunately patty had memorized the
00:09:42
license plate number
00:09:44
[Music]
00:09:45
the vehicle was registered the
00:09:47
38-year-old arthur beaumar
00:09:52
20 years earlier in 1978
00:09:55
beaumar had been convicted of second
00:09:57
degree murder in nevada and was
00:09:59
sentenced to life in prison
00:10:02
unbelievably he was released on parole
00:10:04
after serving only 11 years
00:10:08
where the mentality was and all that by
00:10:11
the parole board in the state he came
00:10:12
from i really don't know let me tell you
00:10:15
something there are people that cannot
00:10:16
be reformed and no matter what you do
00:10:19
they will not change
00:10:20
and arthur bulmar is one of those people
00:10:23
beaumar had a 20-year history of
00:10:26
problems with the law including several
00:10:28
assaults on young women
00:10:30
this is a guy who
00:10:32
really hates women and despises them and
00:10:34
wants to punish them and wants to feel
00:10:36
virile
00:10:36
and feels that he deserves this
00:10:39
this is his way of getting back
00:10:42
investigators learned that the day amy
00:10:45
willard disappeared philadelphia police
00:10:48
pulled bomar over for questioning on an
00:10:50
unrelated matter
00:10:52
he had been stopped roughly six blocks
00:10:54
away from
00:10:56
the scene where her body was found so he
00:10:58
was someone that we we certainly wanted
00:11:00
to talk to and we were attempting to
00:11:01
locate
00:11:04
police went to interview bulmar about
00:11:06
the amy willard case
00:11:08
but they couldn't find him
00:11:11
so the search
00:11:13
was on
00:11:18
a year after amy willard's murder there
00:11:21
had been another attempted carjacking in
00:11:24
philadelphia
00:11:25
information provided by the victim
00:11:27
identified the culprit as an ex-convict
00:11:31
arthur beaumar
00:11:32
but police couldn't find him
00:11:35
not long afterwards another woman called
00:11:38
police to report a man trying to break
00:11:40
into her third floor apartment
00:11:43
the man was arrested and identified
00:11:45
himself as peter thomas love
00:11:48
in his pocket was a set of car keys to a
00:11:51
honda automobile
00:11:53
they determined that there was a honda
00:11:55
nearby they ran that tag and they
00:11:57
learned that that tag belonged
00:11:59
to arthur beaumar assigned to a 1993
00:12:01
ford escort owned by arthur beaumar
00:12:04
police also discovered that peter thomas
00:12:06
love was an alias
00:12:09
he was in fact
00:12:11
arthur beaumar
00:12:13
but why was bomar's license plate on a
00:12:16
honda and not on his 1993 ford escort
00:12:22
the answer was simple the car was stolen
00:12:25
it belonged to maria cobuenos a 25 year
00:12:28
old woman who had been missing for three
00:12:31
months
00:12:33
maria cabuenos was a young woman who
00:12:35
lived in the city of philadelphia who
00:12:37
was reported missing by her family
00:12:39
she was supposed to appear at work one
00:12:42
morning and failed to appear
00:12:46
investigators believe that cabuenos was
00:12:48
abducted while driving on route 476 the
00:12:52
same highway where amy willard had been
00:12:54
attacked
00:12:56
dried blood was found in the trunk on
00:12:59
maria's car which beaumar was driving
00:13:03
both bumpers were slightly scraped like
00:13:06
amy willard's car
00:13:08
bulmar immediately became a suspect in
00:13:11
maria's disappearance
00:13:14
now more than ever
00:13:15
police believed he might have been
00:13:17
involved in amy willard's murder
00:13:20
come to the prison i'll tell you all
00:13:22
what you want to know but i don't think
00:13:23
it's fair to put me on tv and i'm not
00:13:25
being charged with it his alibi was that
00:13:28
he was president of the birthday party
00:13:29
and not outside the bar that amy was
00:13:31
that evening he had been with a family
00:13:35
it was not a family it was a young woman
00:13:36
that
00:13:37
he was seeing this woman had a child
00:13:41
but beaumar's fiance contradicted that
00:13:46
she said bulmar was at smokey joe's bar
00:13:49
on the night amy willard disappeared
00:13:53
police re-examined the evidence looking
00:13:55
for any clues that would tie bulmar to
00:13:58
the murder
00:14:02
one year after her daughter's death
00:14:05
gail willard who worked as an emergency
00:14:07
room nurse
00:14:08
asked to see pictures of amy's injuries
00:14:12
i looked at the picture
00:14:15
of what they were calling a diamond
00:14:17
shaped pattern and i said this isn't a
00:14:19
diamond shaped pattern this is a burn
00:14:21
that was not a burn from a flame it was
00:14:24
either a burn that her body came in
00:14:26
contact with something that had the
00:14:28
ridges on it but it was a burn imprint
00:14:30
and it was uneven
00:14:32
investigators immediately searched for
00:14:34
bulmar's ford escort the car he was
00:14:37
driving at the time amy disappeared but
00:14:39
they got bad news
00:14:41
the car had been involved in an
00:14:43
automobile accident a few months after
00:14:45
amy's disappearance
00:14:47
so they tracked the towing company and
00:14:49
asked where that car was towed to they
00:14:51
went to a location and found a car
00:14:54
that was the green ford escort that had
00:14:56
been actually sitting in a field next to
00:14:58
this tow truck company for almost a
00:15:00
year's time
00:15:01
so it had been there's a potential piece
00:15:04
of great evidence that has not had
00:15:07
the chance to be forensically analyzed
00:15:10
an external examination of the escort
00:15:13
showed slight damage to the front bumper
00:15:17
at least one of the car's tires was a
00:15:19
firestone 440 13-inch tire the same type
00:15:23
of tire which made the impression found
00:15:25
at the crime scene
00:15:28
our latent print examiner in harrisburg
00:15:30
was able to say that the tire was not
00:15:31
only consistent in make model size but
00:15:34
also in wear which is which is helpful
00:15:36
it's another piece to the puzzle so
00:15:38
the forensics in our case were
00:15:40
absolutely critical
00:15:43
omar's car had been exposed to the
00:15:45
elements without its roof for almost a
00:15:48
year
00:15:49
so it was no surprise that police could
00:15:51
find no trace of blood inside the car
00:15:55
in previous employment he had worked
00:15:58
in a hospital in an operating room where
00:16:01
he had learned all of the techniques of
00:16:03
cleaning up blood
00:16:06
until police took a much closer look
00:16:09
we literally took the car apart we
00:16:11
removed the seats we removed the
00:16:13
carpeting we did vacuumings for trace
00:16:16
evidence we literally took the car apart
00:16:18
we took the door panel apart and behind
00:16:20
the door panel we found some blood
00:16:23
tests later showed that the blood found
00:16:26
on the passenger's door
00:16:28
was amy willard's
00:16:31
[Music]
00:16:32
but the most shocking discovery was
00:16:34
something police noticed underneath the
00:16:37
vehicle as it was being towed
00:16:42
as the sun was shining down underneath
00:16:43
the car it was illuminating the oil pan
00:16:47
and looking at the oil pan we were both
00:16:49
in agreement right then and there that
00:16:51
that was the same mark that was left on
00:16:52
amy willard's body
00:16:55
the pattern of x's and does on the oil
00:16:58
pan
00:16:59
was eerily similar to the marks on amy's
00:17:02
body
00:17:04
an expert at the armed forces institute
00:17:06
of pathology confirmed that the pattern
00:17:10
on the oil pan was consistent with the
00:17:13
marks on amy's body
00:17:19
all rapists
00:17:20
and to a certain degree serial killers
00:17:23
pick their victims based on a fantasy
00:17:25
they have a fantasy in their head of of
00:17:27
what they all crime all violent crime
00:17:29
starts with a fantasy
00:17:35
prosecutors believe that amy willard
00:17:37
first caught arthur bulmar's attention
00:17:39
in smokey joe's bar
00:17:47
i'm sorry
00:17:49
from there
00:17:50
they believe bulmar followed amy out of
00:17:52
the bar and along route 476 as she drove
00:17:55
home
00:18:03
when amy was about to exit the highway
00:18:05
prosecutors believe bulmar bumped her
00:18:07
car causing her to pull over
00:18:15
[Music]
00:18:19
the contact left marks on the bumpers of
00:18:22
both cars
00:18:26
as she left her vehicle bomar struck her
00:18:29
with the tire iron
00:18:34
causing the blood spatter on the
00:18:35
guardrail
00:18:36
[Music]
00:18:42
then
00:18:43
dragged her to his car
00:18:46
where he took amy from there
00:18:49
no one knows
00:18:51
but the forensic evidence clearly shows
00:18:54
that beaumars firestone tire left the
00:18:57
tire impression at the crime scene
00:19:05
and that bomar
00:19:06
ran over amy with his vehicle
00:19:10
burning her skin
00:19:12
leaving the imprint of the car's oil pan
00:19:15
on her torso
00:19:19
he then
00:19:20
left her body in the deserted lot
00:19:23
and returned to the scene of the crime
00:19:25
to dispose of amy's clothing
00:19:28
[Music]
00:19:34
ironically
00:19:36
bomar himself provided the most damning
00:19:38
piece of evidence
00:19:40
the semen from amy's rape test kit
00:19:42
matched arthur bomar's dna profile
00:19:46
[Music]
00:19:50
before bomar's murder trial
00:19:53
police found the skeletal remains of
00:19:56
maria cubanos in nearby bucks county
00:19:58
pennsylvania
00:20:02
when beaumar was arrested
00:20:04
he was driving kobanus's automobile
00:20:08
maria's body was found less than 20
00:20:11
miles from arthur bulmar's residence and
00:20:14
30 miles from where amy was abducted
00:20:18
like amy maria died from head injuries
00:20:22
caused by a blunt instrument
00:20:25
i know that he's still clearly suspected
00:20:27
of the disappearance and murder of
00:20:28
mariko buenos it's been publicly
00:20:30
reported and authorities look at other
00:20:32
things but i can't
00:20:35
you know there's no i really shouldn't
00:20:36
say any more than that
00:20:38
during the trial the defense argued that
00:20:41
bulmar was neglected as a child and had
00:20:44
a low iq
00:20:48
omar had to be restrained several times
00:20:50
during the trial because of violent
00:20:52
outbursts
00:20:55
outside the courthouse beaumar's family
00:20:57
took their frustrations out on the
00:21:01
just talk we'll stay median from you
00:21:02
we'll stay awake
00:21:03
his step brother and his mother lashed
00:21:06
out at news crews covering the trial
00:21:09
miss ganges ma'am man ma'am don't hit
00:21:11
him
00:21:13
arthur beaumar was convicted of rape and
00:21:16
first degree murder and was sentenced to
00:21:19
death
00:21:20
omar's reaction when he was convicted
00:21:23
and sentenced to death he turned around
00:21:24
and threatened me with both fingers in
00:21:26
the air
00:21:27
telling you to
00:21:28
do mrs wilber down your two kids
00:21:32
he was just a stone cold killer and a
00:21:34
real predator i
00:21:36
have in my career
00:21:38
never really faced anybody that i felt
00:21:41
was as dangerous
00:21:42
as remorseless and as cold as arthur
00:21:45
beaumar
00:21:46
he doesn't deserve for anyone to ever
00:21:48
think about him again he is just a vile
00:21:50
evil man
00:21:52
i think in the end without the dna
00:21:53
without the tire impression without the
00:21:55
oil pan impression i think we would have
00:21:57
been very hard-pressed to uh to have the
00:21:59
success that we did
