it just sounds like something bad is
00:00:07
happening to her I heard her scream no
00:00:10
stop it I heard some gunshots
00:00:14
that does not prove that I killed my
00:00:17
wife we know what happened because the
00:00:19
video tells us what happened the camera
00:00:22
doesn't lie
00:00:24
this time on Killers caught on camera in

00:00:40
body parts abandoned around the house
00:00:45

home to Lisa and Joel guy married for 31
00:01:30
years
00:01:32
Joel guy senior was a hard worker just a
00:01:35
your typical East Tennessee and just a
00:01:37
good guy he worked as an engineer and
00:01:40
primarily worked in piping Lisa guy was
00:01:44
a records keeper and secretary for an
00:01:46
engineering firm here in Knoxville
00:01:49
Joel had three daughters by a previous
00:01:51
marriage and in 1988 Lisa and Joel had a
00:01:56
son together Joel Michael guy Jr
00:02:00
Lisa guy by all accounts was a really
00:02:03
dedicated mother
00:02:05
I know that they liked the outdoors they
00:02:07
liked being on the water and in 2016
00:02:11
they were really looking forward to
00:02:13
retiring they were preparing for a new
00:02:17
phase in their life so they had spent
00:02:19
most of their life working and taking
00:02:22
care of the children and now the
00:02:23
children were up and out on their own
00:02:25
and that's what they were looking
00:02:27
forward to it
00:02:28
when your kids get up and out you get to
00:02:31
kind of be a couple again
00:02:33
they lived well and lived right and they
00:02:37
were getting ready to enjoy the benefit
00:02:39
of that
00:02:43
Jamie Satterfield has been an
00:02:45
investigative journalist for over 30
00:02:48
years
00:02:49
it was Thanksgiving 2016.
00:02:53
in East Tennessee it's a really pretty
00:02:56
time but so you have a lot of fall
00:02:58
colors Lisa guy in getting ready for
00:03:01
Thanksgiving she had decorated the house
00:03:03
sisters were coming grandkids were
00:03:07
coming
00:03:08
Joel and Lisa were also looking forward
00:03:11
to seeing their biological son Joel who
00:03:13
would be returning home for the holidays
00:03:16
I dare say she was probably a little
00:03:18
excited about that in that it had been a
00:03:21
while it was the setup for would have
00:03:24
been a really happy time for them
00:03:29
with Joel guy Jr living 600 miles away
00:03:32
this was a rare opportunity for Lisa to
00:03:34
spend some time with her son
00:03:37
I know that leasing was enjoying that
00:03:42
time with him because she was going to
00:03:44
go to the store and one of the things
00:03:46
that she was going to get was his
00:03:48
favorite ice cream everything seemed on
00:03:51
the surface really good that night and
00:03:55
the next morning
00:03:59
[Music]
00:04:01
but just two days later Lisa was missing
00:04:05
she failed to turn up to her last day of
00:04:07
work and her own retirement party
00:04:10
the day rolls around and no Lisa so her
00:04:14
co-workers tried to call her
00:04:17
and you know she's not answering the
00:04:20
phone and they knew that that was not in
00:04:24
Lisa's character to just disappear her
00:04:28
co-workers grew concerned enough
00:04:30
that they reached out to the Knox County
00:04:34
Sheriff's Office
00:04:37
police officers visited the guy's
00:04:39
residence and checked in with their
00:04:41
neighbors
00:04:41
[Music]
00:04:43
we're just doing a welfare check just
00:04:45
make sure they're okay I'm just curious
00:04:47
when the last time you see I know they
00:04:49
were here at Thanksgiving because their
00:04:50
son was with them so that's all their
00:04:53
vehicles yes sir okay
00:04:55
Hector Sanchez was assistant district
00:04:58
attorney for Knox County
00:05:01
officers were able to determine that the
00:05:03
vehicles that were registered to both
00:05:05
Lisa and Joe guy senior were present
00:05:07
they could also hear a faint dog bark
00:05:10
inside of the residence
00:05:13
we'll go over and check I'm not sure
00:05:14
they're okay
00:05:19
police couldn't get hold of Lisa or Joel
00:05:21
on their phones
00:05:25
[Music]
00:05:34
to get money for work and looking
00:05:37
through the front window they could see
00:05:38
that groceries were present in the foyer
00:05:40
area and in those groceries it was
00:05:43
apparent to them that there was
00:05:44
perishables that were in those bags
00:05:46
things such as ice cream meats and such
00:05:48
so that was obviously curious to them
00:05:51
they did canvas around to the back of
00:05:53
the residence
00:05:58
thank you
00:05:59
see the Hound Dog's not out this is all
00:06:02
their cars are here they were able to
00:06:04
determine that the doorknob in the back
00:06:07
of the residence was completely missing
00:06:09
so essentially they could see into the
00:06:10
residents when they looked through that
00:06:12
hole they could feel an immense amount
00:06:13
of heat coming from that open portion
00:06:22
they could smell a strong odor of
00:06:23
chemicals that was obviously concerning
00:06:25
to them based on the fact that there was
00:06:27
no contact with Joel and Lisa guy
00:06:31
they're saying rod
00:06:34
police had to get into the house
00:06:41
they managed to get access through the
00:06:43
garage and found a back door
00:06:53
I hear a dog howling Steven Sanders was
00:06:56
a detective from the Knox County
00:06:57
Sheriff's Office he arrived on the scene
00:07:00
to an overheated house the interior door
00:07:03
was opened and it was I mean it was hot
00:07:06
it was it was ridiculously hot
00:07:10
but wait
00:07:16
the bar and Sheriff's Office
00:07:19
[Music]
00:07:20
when you go in there was obviously uh
00:07:24
groceries in the floor
00:07:30
there was animal feces throughout the
00:07:32
house
00:07:33
and a dog barking
00:07:34
[Music]
00:07:39
and as they they got up the stairs you
00:07:42
could see you know brown staining which
00:07:44
they believed to be blood
00:07:48
explode right looks like blood
00:07:52
officers obviously at this point have a
00:07:54
heightened alertness they are looking to
00:07:57
not only determine if someone's okay but
00:07:59
also to determine whether or not a
00:08:01
suspect is present in the residence
00:08:10
and then the top of the stairs they
00:08:12
found a collection of clothing that was
00:08:15
covered in what they believe to be human
00:08:16
blood that was appeared to be cut off of
00:08:19
a human body that was in a pile next to
00:08:22
a very large stain of blood
00:08:25
foreign
00:08:28
people's hands yeah I think so that's
00:08:30
what I think
00:08:33
that's what it looks like
00:08:36
it's horrific there's puddles of blood
00:08:38
there's human remains you can't really
00:08:40
put that into words but you'll never
00:08:43
stop seeing it
00:08:45
it's pretty
00:08:46
pretty gruesome
00:08:54
you can't back out
00:08:57
officers cleared the remainder of the
00:08:59
upstairs and immediately made the
00:09:01
decision to back out
00:09:05
[Music]
00:09:12
officers surrounded the house in case
00:09:15
anyone tried to flee the scene
00:09:17
my eyes on this back corner
00:09:19
on this corner I've got the front if
00:09:21
there's anybody in that house we'll
00:09:22
handle it okay
00:09:24
it appeared the only living being left
00:09:27
in the house was a dog
00:09:30
what's up buddy
00:09:32
he's very hot and distressed right now
00:09:36
house was made a crime scene and
00:09:38
cordoned off
00:09:40
multiple units within the sheriff's
00:09:42
department moved in and they began
00:09:45
documenting the scene
00:09:49
potential weapons cash and cleaning
00:09:52
products were gathered as evidence
00:09:54
the police had to find out what happened
00:09:56
and who the body parts belong to
00:09:59
[Music]
00:10:00
somebody out there that's true evil
00:10:03
and we've got to get them
00:10:05
[Music]
00:10:09
mixture of recently bought items
00:10:11
provided detectives with Clues
00:10:15
around the clothing were several bottles
00:10:17
of Highly corrosive acidic based
00:10:19
Solutions such as muriatic acid food
00:10:22
grade hydrogen peroxide bleach Liquid
00:10:25
Fire Drano in the middle of the bedroom
00:10:28
a workout machine was was tipped over
00:10:31
that was an indication to them that
00:10:33
there had been some form of a struggle
00:10:34
and officers in the corner did find a
00:10:37
very very large spot in the corner of
00:10:40
reddish-brown substance in the master
00:10:42
bathroom
00:10:43
were two blue storage bins
00:10:49
they look in there now there are these
00:10:52
big Rubbermaid containers
00:10:54
and then when they look in there there
00:10:56
there's torsos
00:10:58
[Music]
00:11:06
but the worst was yet to come
00:11:10
they get into the kitchen area
00:11:13
and what they see is that there's a big
00:11:15
pot a Soup pot sitting on the stove it
00:11:18
is boiling they weren't sure if it was
00:11:20
water or a chemical but they could see
00:11:22
that this had been cooking if you will
00:11:25
and they look into it
00:11:27
and when they look into it
00:11:30
what they see is a human head
00:11:37
a gruesome Discovery whoever decapitated
00:11:41
this body was still at Large
00:11:44
they know nothing about who may or may
00:11:47
not have been in that home
00:11:49
all they know is that they have a house
00:11:52
full
00:11:53
of body parts and this chemical smell
00:11:56
the other thing that was unusual is here
00:11:59
is somebody who has taken Extraordinary
00:12:02
Measures of chopping trying to boil away
00:12:07
to literally dissolve these bones make
00:12:10
these bodies disappear
00:12:13
but clearly was interrupted in some way
00:12:15
because it was incomplete the job was
00:12:18
not done
00:12:21
disposing of bodies especially when
00:12:24
people dismember bodies always sounds
00:12:26
and feels so incredibly gruesome and it
00:12:30
is objectively but subjectively for the
00:12:33
person who's doing it they often
00:12:36
describe it as going into
00:12:38
problem-solving mode and the problem is
00:12:40
that they have this body and so the
00:12:42
solution is anything that will get rid
00:12:44
of it and so they're no longer seeing
00:12:46
these individuals as human beings
00:12:47
they're seeing them as a problem to be
00:12:49
solved as a body to be removed as
00:12:51
objects effectively and so that can help
00:12:53
us to understand why it might seem less
00:12:56
gruesome to the person who's doing it
00:12:57
and more just a necessity
00:13:03
we don't know if it's a random act we
00:13:05
don't know if it's family we don't know
00:13:07
anything until we start getting our our
00:13:09
Clues and putting them together and and
00:13:12
piecing the piecing it together but
00:13:15
right off the bat you know that
00:13:16
whoever's responsible for this has got
00:13:18
to be caught
00:13:22
vital pieces of evidence gave the police
00:13:24
a breakthrough
00:13:27
we found two receipts from Walmart the
00:13:29
first receipt was found in the groceries
00:13:31
that were left in the foyer area just
00:13:33
through the front door also in
00:13:35
processing the crime scene the second
00:13:36
level specifically investigators found
00:13:38
an additional Walmart bag that had blood
00:13:40
on it that had medical supplies
00:13:43
including tape ointments things you
00:13:45
would use for serious wound to treat
00:13:48
such as a knife injury in that bag was
00:13:52
the second receipt
00:13:54
receipts these days have time stamps on
00:13:56
them they send some folks to go to the
00:14:00
Walmart to review surveillance video
00:14:03
around that time frame
00:14:09
the Walmart was only two miles from the
00:14:11
guy's family home
00:14:13
[Music]
00:14:15
going into the Walmart being able to
00:14:17
give them a time stamp for a seat we
00:14:19
were able to pull a video of what was
00:14:22
taking place at that particular cash
00:14:24
register being checked out in the
00:14:25
self-checkout line
00:14:28
the video surveillance at the checkout
00:14:30
helped the police identify the person
00:14:32
buying the groceries
00:14:37
we're able to identify some of the
00:14:40
clothing we believed that was Lisa's
00:14:47
they were able to determine that
00:14:51
two days before that Lisa guy was in
00:14:53
there buying those exact groceries
00:14:56
[Music]
00:15:02
made it home with the groceries
00:15:05
when the police checked the Walmart
00:15:06
video footage for the time printed on
00:15:09
the second receipt 3 30 PM that same day
00:15:12
they made a surprising discovery
00:15:15
you can tell in the Walmart footage that
00:15:18
this person and he's got bandages on
00:15:20
he's clearly injured himself and he's
00:15:24
buying some bandages and things it would
00:15:26
appear for his own cuts
00:15:29
they look at this surveillance video and
00:15:32
who they see
00:15:34
is the face that they've seen in that
00:15:37
house in family photos
00:15:41
of the Sun
00:15:46
the son of Lisa and Joel guy senior was
00:15:50
28 year old Joel guy Jr
00:15:54
he lived in an apartment in Baton Rouge
00:15:57
over 600 miles away
00:16:00
[Music]
00:16:01
he was working on his undergraduate
00:16:04
degree from the Louisiana State
00:16:05
University and he had been doing so
00:16:08
since he was roughly 18 years old he was
00:16:11
a smart kid by all indications a smart
00:16:13
young man and was working on potentially
00:16:16
becoming a plastic surgeon
00:16:18
Joel guy Jr also had a difficult
00:16:21
relationship with his family
00:16:25
what was a little strange is that wow
00:16:29
the girls were very close to their
00:16:32
parents their son
00:16:35
really never connected with his own
00:16:38
family from a very young age Joe guy Jr
00:16:41
he wanted to be away from home and as a
00:16:45
child he wasn't sent to boarding school
00:16:47
he insisted on going to a boarding
00:16:49
school
00:16:51
Lisa and Joel guy senior had been
00:16:54
supporting their son financially
00:16:56
[Music]
00:17:01
first rent I was paid for his food she
00:17:04
paid for his vehicle his car insurance
00:17:06
Joe Michael guy Jr never worked a day in
00:17:09
his life
00:17:14
told him they planned to stop supporting
00:17:16
him so they could retire more
00:17:18
comfortably
00:17:24
someone who's so dependent on his
00:17:26
parents at this point starts to wonder
00:17:28
well how am I going to survive if my
00:17:31
parents cut me off and that can lead to
00:17:33
a spiral of
00:17:35
catastrophizing of thinking worse and
00:17:38
worse and worse potential consequences
00:17:39
and that catastrophizing can make you
00:17:42
think well the only thing I can do is to
00:17:44
somehow figure out how I can still get
00:17:46
that money and
00:17:48
that might lead you to fantasize about
00:17:50
ways to do that and fantasizing can
00:17:53
include
00:17:54
maybe thinking about ways of taking
00:17:56
advantage of people or of maybe even
00:17:59
killing people
00:18:04
two days after Thanksgiving Joel guide
00:18:07
Jr was supposed to be back home in Baton
00:18:10
Rouge
00:18:10
but the Walmart footage showed that he
00:18:13
was still in Knoxville Tennessee
00:18:17
the distance between Knoxville and
00:18:18
Louisiana is pretty significant I mean
00:18:20
we're talking five or six hundred miles
00:18:22
a car drive of you know eight to ten
00:18:25
hours so to have Joe Michael guy Jr
00:18:27
still present in Knox County days after
00:18:29
he was thought to have been gone that
00:18:32
was significant to our investigation
00:18:35
on closer inspection the CCTV footage
00:18:37
also revealed Joel guide Junior's
00:18:40
physical condition
00:18:42
this angle of the video from Walmart is
00:18:45
real important to us it's a
00:18:46
self-checkout which allows us to see the
00:18:49
items purchased which match the items at
00:18:53
the residence it also allows us to see
00:18:55
his hands which shows us that he has
00:18:58
injuries and wounds on his hands
00:19:02
[Music]
00:19:04
the police found footage of Joel guy
00:19:06
Jr's car leaving Walmart which meant
00:19:09
they could track his license plate
00:19:11
the FBI task force and they actually
00:19:14
located the vehicle and
00:19:17
him in the apartment back in Baton Rouge
00:19:20
so they just set up surveillance and
00:19:22
watched that why me and detective McCord
00:19:25
began our travel to Baton Rouge
00:19:31
when they got there they arrested Joel
00:19:33
guy Jr he was taken into custody police
00:19:37
found another trail of receipts inside
00:19:40
his apartment
00:19:42
in connection with the investigation
00:19:45
officers were able to ascertain that Joe
00:19:48
Michael guy Jr had been buying various
00:19:51
supplies in and around the Baton Rouge
00:19:53
area in Louisiana
00:19:54
[Music]
00:19:55
17 days before Thanksgiving Joel guy Jr
00:20:00
was captured on camera at Ace Hardware
00:20:02
in Louisiana
00:20:05
this video is of him purchasing heavy
00:20:08
chemicals Drano
00:20:10
and so forth that were the same
00:20:13
chemicals that were found here which
00:20:15
helps us prove premeditation
00:20:18
this is him at a Home Depot
00:20:21
going through self-checkout purchasing
00:20:23
the garden hose purchasing a garden
00:20:26
sprayer bleach sprayer and a spray
00:20:30
bottle
00:20:31
and we have him walking out
00:20:33
[Music]
00:20:36
police match the items in the video with
00:20:39
the same items found at his parents
00:20:41
house in Knoxville
00:20:43
they also discovered another chilling
00:20:46
piece of evidence as the law enforcers
00:20:49
are searching this house one of these
00:20:51
rooms belonged or had at one time
00:20:53
belonged to Joe guy Jr and so when they
00:20:58
go into that room they find he
00:21:01
had left a backpack it had his laptop in
00:21:05
it but it also had this
00:21:08
college rule notebook
00:21:12
and when they open it up what they see
00:21:15
is Page after page after page of
00:21:20
handwritten notes
00:21:22
the best description of its contents I
00:21:25
would call this a murder book
00:21:28
his notebook laid out that he wanted to
00:21:31
render his parents into a liquid form
00:21:33
and then put them into the public
00:21:34
Waterway before he lit the house on fire
00:21:36
to get rid of any evidence
00:21:40
Joel guy Jr was putting his detailed
00:21:43
plan into place in the days leading up
00:21:45
to Thanksgiving
00:21:47
the video evidence was damning
00:21:50
Walmart Louisiana he is purchasing the
00:21:54
bins the blue bins were what we located
00:21:57
in the master bathroom with the human
00:22:00
remains
00:22:02
18 or 20 days before these brutal
00:22:05
murders he's out in Baton Rouge in the
00:22:07
surrounding area buying all these
00:22:08
supplies that were all captured on
00:22:10
various surveillance closed circuit TVs
00:22:15
foreign
00:22:19
the importance to it to us was it showed
00:22:21
his premeditation
00:22:23
and his intent
00:22:25
for what had happened back in Knoxville
00:22:29
through DNA analysis forensic
00:22:31
Pathologists found that the body parts
00:22:33
in the house belonged to Lisa and Joel
00:22:36
guy senior
00:22:37
their son Joel Michael guy Jr was
00:22:41
charged with two counts of first-degree
00:22:43
murder and abuse of a corpse
00:22:47
when you think about a case that
00:22:50
involves someone who is accused of
00:22:53
chopping up his parents the first
00:22:55
thought I think that anyone would have
00:22:57
is he's got to be crazy I'm certain that
00:23:00
his defense team would have loved to
00:23:02
pursue an insanity defense because they
00:23:04
have nothing else but he refused it was
00:23:09
almost as if he were offended that
00:23:11
anybody would be questioning his
00:23:13
intellect
00:23:14
Joel guy Jr was comprehensively captured
00:23:18
by the net of surveillance
00:23:21
he was sentenced to life in prison for
00:23:24
two counts of first-degree murder and
00:23:26
dismemberment of his parents Joel guy
00:23:28
senior and Lisa guy
00:23:32
at the trial the full extent of the
00:23:35
horrific details of what happened were
00:23:37
revealed
00:23:38
[Music]
00:23:39
he did kill his father first when his
00:23:41
mother was out grocery shopping and the
00:23:43
reason he did that he could have
00:23:44
accomplished The Act of Killing the
00:23:46
bigger threat which would be his father
00:23:47
he did that in the upstairs kind of
00:23:49
spare bedroom slash exercise room we
00:23:52
believe that perhaps his father was
00:23:54
engaged in working out when he was
00:23:55
attacked there was proof from the
00:23:57
medical examiner that he was stabbed in
00:23:59
the back multiple times there's also
00:24:01
proof that Joe Vass senior fought back
00:24:03
which ultimately led to Joe guy Jr
00:24:05
obtaining a pretty serious wound to his
00:24:08
hand
00:24:09
further proof established that once Miss
00:24:11
Lisa guy got home from Walmart based on
00:24:14
the collection of the groceries that
00:24:16
were not put away with perishables she
00:24:19
was likely lured upstairs and the minute
00:24:21
that she reached the top of the stairs
00:24:23
is where she was
00:24:24
attacked and murdered Joe guy senior was
00:24:27
disarticulated at his hips
00:24:30
and also at his elbows and hands
00:24:35
Lisa guy was decapitated
00:24:38
she was disarticulated at the kneecaps
00:24:41
and we believe that that was in order to
00:24:45
render his parents in a position where
00:24:48
he could put their remains in each one
00:24:49
of those blue storage tubs
00:24:52
despite the measures that he took the
00:24:54
planning he took his plan did fail and I
00:24:57
think a lot of the reason his plan
00:24:59
failed was based on the fact that Joe
00:25:01
guy senior fought back Joel Michael guy
00:25:04
Jr had to leave the state of Tennessee
00:25:07
and drive roughly five to six hundred
00:25:10
miles to seek medical attention
00:25:12
we were able to determine that he did
00:25:15
come back to Knox County where he likely
00:25:18
saw that his neighborhood was saturated
00:25:20
with law enforcement and decided to
00:25:22
again leave and go back to Baton Rouge
00:25:27
parasite is when a child kills their
00:25:30
parents double parasite is when a child
00:25:32
kills both mother and father or both
00:25:34
parents it's rare for children to kill
00:25:36
their parents it's even more rare for
00:25:38
children to kill both of their parents
00:25:40
so if a child is going to kill a parent
00:25:42
it's usually one parent and it's often a
00:25:45
boy who is killing their father or their
00:25:48
mother
00:25:52
Joel Michael guy Jr was made aware that
00:25:55
his parents were going to cut him off
00:25:56
financially and when that was threatened
00:25:59
he decided to kill his parents
00:26:04
it's the coldest motive there is greed
00:26:08
I'm sure he manipulated his mother all
00:26:11
the time and for once she was standing
00:26:13
firm even though it upset her she was
00:26:16
standing for her and I think he realized
00:26:19
that the gig was a and that's when he
00:26:22
put this murder book plan into Plus
00:26:26
Joel guy Jr hoped by killing his parents
00:26:29
he would receive all their savings and
00:26:31
life insurance money but there was
00:26:33
another twist to his financial motive
00:26:36
an emotional one
00:26:38
he was homosexual he had a partner that
00:26:42
lived with him for a while and then they
00:26:44
they separated and they were friends but
00:26:47
Joe got Jr wanted to be with him
00:26:50
and the other individual did not want to
00:26:53
be with him
00:26:55
the individual in question was Michael
00:26:57
McCracken
00:26:59
and in jail Joel guy Jr made a call to
00:27:03
Michael where he revealed his motivation
00:27:05
for killing his parents
00:27:12
we first met 12 years ago and I always
00:27:15
got insanely jealous and it became
00:27:18
blatantly obvious that I didn't need any
00:27:21
of the criteria there has never been any
00:27:23
question about that physically speaking
00:27:25
you know he can bariatric surgery I
00:27:28
could get cheap space implants to give
00:27:32
me any facial blood structure
00:27:42
very very realistic chance of being
00:27:45
happy if I got around to doing that
00:27:49
he wanted the inheritance for himself to
00:27:52
change his appearance and make
00:27:55
the love of his life want him
00:27:58
I don't know what to say I'm
00:28:00
angry and lost and confused and
00:28:02
disappointed and upset and mourning you
00:28:05
like your dad even though I'm talking to
00:28:07
you on the phone is taking everything I
00:28:09
have to process and maintain my sanity I
00:28:12
I found you all the time
00:28:15
you were the only good thing in my life
00:28:18
he did this to take all the inheritance
00:28:21
to change his appearance to make his
00:28:24
significant other want him
00:28:27
and that's basically it
00:28:30
what was particularly disturbing when
00:28:33
you look at that murder book
00:28:35
as
00:28:36
that while he's seated at The Family
00:28:39
Table on Thanksgiving
00:28:41
and he's being friendly and loving on
00:28:46
his family all the while his instruction
00:28:50
manual for killing his parents is up
00:28:52
there in his bedroom and they had no
00:28:54
idea
00:28:57
the role of of cameras as it relates to
00:29:00
this particular case was tremendous all
00:29:01
the security surveillance footage that
00:29:03
we had at various locations I do believe
00:29:06
that it would have been a lot harder to
00:29:07
present the case in the way that we were
00:29:09
able to and to corroborate theories that
00:29:12
we had about the premeditation and
00:29:14
purchasing items and and utilizing them
00:29:17
in the commission of these brutal
00:29:18
murders
00:29:20
the cameras are
00:29:22
very important because they there's no
00:29:25
there's no dispute in who this is and
00:29:28
what is being bought and what was at the
00:29:29
crime scene
00:29:31
this case is obviously one that that no
00:29:34
one wants to be a part of it's a very
00:29:36
heavy case the loss of life and the
00:29:38
manner in which these folks were
00:29:41
murdered is just brutal
00:29:43
it's the strangest defendant that I have
00:29:46
ever encountered
00:29:48
there is something missing in his soul
00:29:51
how can a person be so
00:29:54
so cruel and
00:29:56
brutal not only to just somebody but
00:30:00
family
00:30:02
it's a day that you won't ever forget
00:30:15
research has found that since at least
00:30:17
2020 CCTV has been used more often than
00:30:21
any other kind of forensic science or
00:30:23
technology to identify and charge
00:30:26
suspects
00:30:27
cameras are vital in helping track and
00:30:30
place suspects in or around the scene of
00:30:33
a crime

[Music]
00:30:35
the Hamlet of Snowden near alesham in
00:30:39
Kent
00:30:41
home to 53-year-old Julia James
00:30:45
Julia had recently remarried she had two
00:30:48
children from two separate relationships
00:30:51
Julia James was a police Community
00:30:54
Support Officer and she was really well
00:30:56
known in the area because of her role as
00:30:57
the pcso and she was really outgoing
00:31:00
friendly she was a massive part of the
00:31:03
Kent Police Community as well
00:31:05
she was a the a pcso so domestic abuse
00:31:09
police and Community Support Officer
00:31:11
supporting victims of domestic abuse and
00:31:13
she was there to help and that's what
00:31:14
she wanted to do
00:31:16
[Music]
00:31:17
Julia lived next to ackled Wood and
00:31:20
often walked her Jack Russell Toby in
00:31:22
the Woodland and Countryside which
00:31:24
surrounded her home
00:31:26
Kirsty Bennett is a lecturer in
00:31:28
criminology at Leeds Beckett University
00:31:31
Julia used to walk her dog quite
00:31:34
frequently in a Woods which was at the
00:31:37
back of her house and while she was
00:31:39
there she came across a man on a couple
00:31:42
of occasions lurkin which made her feel
00:31:44
quite uncomfortable
00:31:48
Gavin Moss is a senior investigative
00:31:50
officer at Kent Police
00:31:53
Julia had expressed some concerns about
00:31:55
a male she'd seen I think on two or
00:31:57
three occasions she described the person
00:32:00
saying that he was in the area of accot
00:32:02
woods and gave her some calls for
00:32:05
concern this was never ever reported and
00:32:07
that's no criticism of anybody because
00:32:09
people do see things like that and
00:32:11
things don't always get reported
00:32:15
told her husband Paul that she'd passed
00:32:18
a really weird dude on the occultwood
00:32:20
Bridle Path
00:32:22
and on another day when Julia went for a
00:32:24
walk with her husband she pointed out
00:32:26
the same man to him
00:32:28
Paul James Julia's husband mentioned
00:32:31
that he'd seen this person in the
00:32:33
February so February 2021 in the year of
00:32:36
Eckhart would
00:32:43
for 19
00:32:46
to occur either threats or incidents
00:32:49
where they feel like they've been
00:32:50
watched before they report it to police
00:32:52
so you need to have really seen that
00:32:54
person quite a lot in order to raise the
00:32:57
alarm and go to authorities
00:33:03
after their encounters with the strange
00:33:05
man in the woods Julia and her husband
00:33:07
avoided their usual dog walking route
00:33:11
and as an extra precaution Paul bought
00:33:14
Julia a smart watch
00:33:16
that was there as an extra security
00:33:18
safety measure so she could quickly
00:33:20
alert people if she felt unsafe and that
00:33:24
allowed her to go back into the woods
00:33:25
after taking a break from not visiting
00:33:28
[Music]
00:33:30
7th April at 12 minutes past two in the
00:33:33
afternoon
00:33:34
Julia left her house and took her dog
00:33:36
Toby for a walk in the nearby Woods
00:33:39
at 2 23 PM she was spotted on a distant
00:33:43
CCTV camera walking through a gap in a
00:33:46
hedge near ackled Wood
00:33:49
this video clip is from a local business
00:33:52
that overlooks the echo wood area and
00:33:55
what it actually shows is an image of
00:33:58
somebody walking along here
00:34:00
this CCTV was cross-referenced with GPS
00:34:03
data from the smartwatch
00:34:06
we were able to say that that individual
00:34:08
was indeed Julia James it showed the
00:34:11
exact route she'd taken from her home
00:34:13
address
00:34:18
peered in the footage Julia's Smartwatch
00:34:20
detected a big change
00:34:23
the Smartwatch indicated that a heart
00:34:25
rate rapidly Rose from 97 to 145 so we
00:34:31
can see that something's a problem she's
00:34:34
moving very quickly
00:34:37
the Smartwatch data also showed Julia
00:34:40
made a detour from her usual route
00:34:48
and her heart rate changed dramatically
00:34:50
it was very clear to say that she she'd
00:34:53
run away our take on that was that she
00:34:55
was being chased and
00:35:00
and walking in the woods and came across
00:35:02
Julia's dog wandering alone I saw
00:35:06
Julia's dog Toby but without an owner
00:35:09
they then went to investigate and sadly
00:35:11
that's when Julia's body was found
00:35:13
[Music]
00:35:15
Julia suffered very traumatic bluntforce
00:35:18
trauma injuries she had a broken wrist
00:35:21
she had multiple lacerations and
00:35:23
injuries to her skull and face the
00:35:25
offender took strides to to Really
00:35:27
injure Julia
00:35:30
she stood no chance of survival and died
00:35:32
very very quickly unfortunately didn't
00:35:35
didn't you know go through too much pain
00:35:41
capable of carrying out such violence
00:35:45
at the time understandably there was a
00:35:47
lot of concern a lot of fear in the
00:35:48
community one of my first thoughts is is
00:35:50
this person going to strike a game where
00:35:53
we end up having another murder that
00:35:55
could follow
00:35:56
the police started to search the area
00:35:59
where Julia's body was found
00:36:02
the area was absolutely enormous it is
00:36:05
by far the biggest scene that I've ever
00:36:07
dealt with we use licensed search
00:36:09
officers to undertake what we call line
00:36:13
searches fingertip searches we use the
00:36:16
Drone we had frenzy recovery dogs out as
00:36:18
well
00:36:20
they're in video evidence was crucial to
00:36:22
the case
00:36:25
I remember saying that one of my
00:36:26
briefings be creative think about other
00:36:29
opportunities think about buses think
00:36:31
about lorries think about delivery
00:36:33
drivers get it as open as we can to make
00:36:35
sure we capture everything possible in
00:36:38
terms of footage that we we had to view
00:36:40
it worked out to six thousand seven
00:36:43
hundred hours worth of footage
00:36:46
but digital forensic analysts spotted
00:36:49
something just under two hours before
00:36:52
Julia was murdered CCTV captured a
00:36:55
person in alsham carrying a bag you can
00:36:58
see that he's walking in the direction
00:36:59
of a gap in a tree line
00:37:02
this individual was carrying something
00:37:04
in his bag
00:37:05
you can't get any facial identification
00:37:08
of him
00:37:09
31 minutes later what seems to be the
00:37:12
same person was spotted again
00:37:15
and then again leaving the area at 3 45
00:37:19
pm
00:37:20
what really helped is that this also
00:37:23
coincides within the time frame of
00:37:25
obviously after Junior was was brutally
00:37:27
murdered so it all starts bringing it
00:37:30
all together about his movements pre and
00:37:32
post what tragically happened
00:37:38
as well as the CCTV footage police also
00:37:41
investigated potential Witnesses who'd
00:37:43
been driving in the area around the time
00:37:46
of Julia's murder
00:37:48
after such a high profile incident the
00:37:51
community was on high alert and a
00:37:53
critical piece of dash cam footage was
00:37:56
recorded by local gamekeeper Gavin
00:37:58
Tucker
00:37:59
oh my way up to
00:38:04
right
00:38:07
yeah
00:38:09
all right what's that about then
00:38:13
yeah where you going then
00:38:17
he described the location he come from
00:38:20
was um the ABS the crime scene
00:38:23
um and that's what aroused Mr Tucker's
00:38:25
suspicions
00:38:31
hastily left the scene
00:38:34
Gavin Tucker needed to act fast
00:38:37
please please
00:38:40
oh yeah it's a
00:38:44
it's an ambitious fella of Justified
00:38:46
approach and he's running off and
00:38:49
there's been a bit of the um a death
00:38:53
um at occult down at Echo at the moment
00:38:57
he then runs away uh and runs along
00:39:00
Addison Road and then as you can see
00:39:02
here he cuts across and runs into to the
00:39:05
wooded area
00:39:07
I felt wood near Dover between Dover and
00:39:10
Canterbury
00:39:12
oh particular interest to us was this
00:39:14
item here which was being carried
00:39:18
the pathologist's report gave the police
00:39:20
critical information about the type of
00:39:22
weapon that was used to kill Julia
00:39:25
from the post-mortem the pathologist
00:39:27
said to me if you're looking for
00:39:29
something cylindrical linear and heavy
00:39:33
on one end
00:39:36
the weapon used to kill Julia hadn't
00:39:39
been located near the scene of the crime
00:39:42
police were looking for anything which
00:39:44
may have fit the pathologist's
00:39:46
description
00:39:50
as well as the dash cam footage Gavin
00:39:52
Tucker managed to take a photo of the
00:39:54
suspect in the field before he ran off
00:40:00
so excited the image to the General
00:40:02
Public
00:40:03
that wanted the whole deal to be cropped
00:40:06
so we didn't show exactly what that was
00:40:08
in the event that we could hopefully
00:40:09
locate that in the future
00:40:13
when police released the image to the
00:40:15
media a witness identified the suspect
00:40:17
as 21 year old Callum wheeler
00:40:23
arrested Callum on Friday the 7th of May
00:40:26
10 days after Julia was murdered
00:40:30
show me your head hey both hands show me
00:40:33
heads step back step back step back
00:40:36
barricading himself in protesting his
00:40:38
innocence right from the beginning and
00:40:40
he resisted arrest
00:40:42
[Music]
00:40:51
within his bedroom uh just over this
00:40:54
side there is what we believe to be the
00:40:57
weapon which then was subsequently
00:40:59
seized
00:41:01
suspiciously during the time of the
00:41:03
offense okay
00:41:07
up against his bedroom wall matched the
00:41:09
item he was seen carrying before and
00:41:12
after Julia's murder
00:41:13
the weapon that was used was actually a
00:41:16
railway Jack handle that is used by the
00:41:19
railways to lift tracks effectively with
00:41:21
it on a Jack was made of fiberglass and
00:41:25
consistent with what exactly what the
00:41:27
pathology said it was linear cylindrical
00:41:30
and it was very heavy on one end
00:41:41
we didn't know a great deal about Calum
00:41:43
wheeler from a police intelligence point
00:41:46
of view very little was known about him
00:41:48
and he was a completely loner in life
00:41:50
he he had no friends
00:41:53
he'd lived in ayush him he'd been in
00:41:55
alsham for a couple of years came from
00:41:57
South East London apart from that we
00:41:59
didn't have a great deal more
00:42:00
as part of the investigation detectives
00:42:03
are looking to create a narrative of the
00:42:04
event to support a successful
00:42:06
prosecution
00:42:08
DNA evidence was vital to put Callum at
00:42:11
the scene of the crime
00:42:13
what we were able then to show was that
00:42:16
we had Callum Wheeler's DNA on Julia's
00:42:18
clothing but also on the weapon we had
00:42:21
Julius DNA
00:42:24
we also had on his training shoes
00:42:26
presence of Julia's blood he was charged
00:42:30
he appeared at court and he was reminded
00:42:34
in custody
00:42:37
in court the full details of what
00:42:39
happened to Julia James on the 27th of
00:42:42
April 2021 were revealed
00:42:45
Callum we're at ambushna and subjected
00:42:48
her to an absolutely brutal and horrific
00:42:52
murder causing absolute catastrophic
00:42:55
head injuries worst I've ever seen
00:42:58
the extent of the injuries is not a
00:43:01
common occurrence because we know that
00:43:04
Julia was likely unconscious from the
00:43:06
first injury and we're seeing the
00:43:08
multiple attacks afterwards which
00:43:11
is not necessarily needed to cause death
00:43:15
Julia was not sexually assaulted in the
00:43:18
sense that she was a victim of a right
00:43:20
we know that because of the forensic
00:43:22
analysis that we did but there were a
00:43:25
few significant issues in relation to
00:43:28
Cannon wheeler that we were able to
00:43:30
establish during the course of the
00:43:32
investigation the presence of Cannon
00:43:35
Wheeler's DNA on a vest top that Julia
00:43:37
had been wearing at the time and that
00:43:40
didn't happen by accident she was
00:43:42
wearing a jacket she was also wearing a
00:43:44
jumper as well and the vest talk was
00:43:47
underneath those items so you know he he
00:43:50
had touched her breast and that all came
00:43:53
to what we've said was a sexually
00:43:55
motivated murder
00:43:59
Callum Wheeler's internet search history
00:44:01
also showed that he'd searched the word
00:44:04
rape just two days before Julia's murder
00:44:08
and his actions after he was arrested
00:44:11
were disturbing
00:44:14
when he got arrested taken into the
00:44:16
PlayStation he exposed himself to a
00:44:18
female police officer a masterbite in
00:44:20
front of that officer which would have
00:44:22
been absolutely horrendous for that
00:44:24
individual officer to see
00:44:26
had he not been caught the police
00:44:28
believed this could have been the first
00:44:30
in the series of attacks on women in the
00:44:32
area
00:44:33
I can't ignore the fact that he was
00:44:35
walking around with that weapon you know
00:44:37
was it because he wanted it as a trophy
00:44:39
was it because he would have killed
00:44:41
again only one person knows that and
00:44:44
that is Canon wheeler
00:44:45
um because I'm a detective of many years
00:44:47
you know I can't help but think that
00:44:50
potentially we could have had another
00:44:55
had enough evidence
00:44:57
surveillance footage and things like
00:44:58
CCTV are so important for tie-in weapons
00:45:03
belongings
00:45:05
to an offender and the victim an
00:45:08
identifying sequence of events so what
00:45:10
was the offender doing beforehand what
00:45:12
were they doing after the event that we
00:45:14
can put together into that story
00:45:17
my way up to
00:45:19
had we not had CCTV we wouldn't have
00:45:22
seen him holding the weapon before we
00:45:24
wouldn't have seen him holding the
00:45:25
weapon afterwards that could have
00:45:27
presented a defense for him that he'd
00:45:29
found the weapon Callum wheeler was
00:45:32
sentenced to life in prison with a
00:45:35
minimum term of 37 years
00:45:38
I went to the funeral and the impact of
00:45:41
Julia's murder was absolutely
00:45:43
significant
00:45:45
did I treat this any differently to any
00:45:47
other murder I didn't because I needed
00:45:49
to catch him we needed to catch him
00:45:51
because he was quite clear he was a
00:45:53
brutal individual but it is you know
00:45:56
something
00:45:57
different difficult one is one of your
00:46:00
own
00:46:10
foreign
