The Heartbreaking Murder of Mitchell Jones Jr. | Killers Caught On Camera

June 28, 2024 / 46:52

This episode of Killers Caught on Camera covers two murder cases: the brutal killing of Mitchell Jones Jr. in Marietta, Georgia, and the murder of CLA Abel White in Nottinghamshire, UK. The episode features police investigations, forensic evidence, and the role of technology in solving these crimes.

In the first case, Mitchell Jones Jr. was found bleeding in his bedroom after a violent altercation. Detective Sarah Penny and Detective Carrie Grimstead led the investigation, uncovering evidence of a struggle and a complex relationship between Mitchell and his killer, Dante Holmes. Holmes was ultimately arrested and confessed to the murder, claiming self-defense.

The second case involves CLA Abel White, who was found dead in her home after being brutally attacked. Police used CCTV footage and digital forensics to identify John Jessup as the prime suspect. Jessup was arrested and later confessed to the murder, although the murder weapon was never found.

The episode highlights the importance of technology in modern investigations, including geofence technology and CCTV footage, which played crucial roles in solving both cases.

Both cases illustrate the tragic outcomes of domestic violence and the challenges faced by law enforcement in bringing perpetrators to justice.

TL;DR

Two murder cases highlight the role of technology in solving crimes and the tragic outcomes of domestic violence.

location when the police arrived the

00:02:46
out police make yourself know if you're
00:02:48
in the
00:02:55
H the man was locked inside a room
00:02:58
officers resorted to brute
00:03:01
force and were met with a shocking scene
00:03:05
inside the bedroom victims of as he's
00:03:08
been shot we got a lot of
00:03:11
blood he was kind of in a corner
00:03:14
bleeding out and just saying help me
00:03:16
help me uh he shot me where you shot St
00:03:21

the Medics arrived on scene and tried to
00:03:39

00:03:44
[Music]
00:03:48
alive
00:03:50
sir as the medical team tried to
00:03:52
stabilize him the police started to try
00:03:56
and work out what
00:03:58
happened seeing the blood all over the
00:04:00
wall and glass being cut they knew some
00:04:02
kind of struggle have happened uh so
00:04:05
they were trying to absorb all that in
00:04:07
looks like it happened here there's
00:04:09
blood at the door coming all way up the
00:04:11
steps he was actually locked in here so
00:04:13
we don't know if he came in
00:04:16
here the bedroom was in disarray it was
00:04:19
covered in blood all over the walls
00:04:22
bottles had been broken on the ground
00:04:24
everything had kind of been moved around
00:04:26
in the room ready 1 2 3
00:04:30
badly injured the man was bleeding
00:04:33
heavily the neighbors had come outside
00:04:35
to see what was going on is
00:04:39
it oh
00:04:42
God do you know him well or I'm know him
00:04:45
very well what's his name Mitchell
00:04:47
Mitchell
00:04:54
yes 31-year-old Mitchell Jones Jr had
00:04:57
moved from Erie Pennsylvania to Atlanta
00:05:00
Georgia in search of a better
00:05:03
[Music]
00:05:04
life he worked at a local restaurant
00:05:07
that was nearby his house he was the
00:05:09
life of the party everybody loved being
00:05:11
around him he was sweet he liked to hang
00:05:14
out with dogs and adopt them and he was
00:05:17
in the process of wanting to make it to
00:05:20
the big screen and work for
00:05:22
Hollywood he had been an extra in
00:05:25
several movies uh where he really took
00:05:28
pride in that so his big dream was to
00:05:30
make it to
00:05:31
[Music]
00:05:37
Hollywood but Mitchell's dreams were
00:05:41
shattered as he succumbed to his
00:05:43
multiple
00:05:48
injuries this was now a murder
00:05:51
case the police needed to catch
00:05:54
Mitchell's
00:05:57
killer detective Carrie grimstead was
00:06:00
the lead
00:06:02
investigator any investigation but
00:06:04
particularly homicide the longer it goes
00:06:07
the colder the evidence gets what the
00:06:11
hell is
00:06:12
that one thing leads to another you need
00:06:15
to follow that up follow that up follow
00:06:17
that up there's a little bit of blood in
00:06:19
the
00:06:20
doorway the faster we can act on the
00:06:23
evidence the fresher it is the better
00:06:25
the evidence is going to be
00:06:28
[Music]
00:06:30
Jesse Evans was leading the major crimes
00:06:32
unit at the District Attorney's
00:06:34
office we knew who the victim was uh we
00:06:37
knew that his cell phone had been taken
00:06:39
from him we knew that this was a
00:06:41
particularly violent
00:06:43
assault but we didn't have a whole lot
00:06:45
of details that we could glean from him
00:06:47
before his passing about who might have
00:06:49
caused these injuries to him or how this
00:06:51
may have
00:06:53
occurred the only things he did say was
00:06:56
my neighbor knows
00:07:02
she could tell us that Mitchell called
00:07:04
her that night told her that he had to
00:07:06
come home and she has seen couple people
00:07:09
come in and out of the house um and only
00:07:11
knew one person really that kind of
00:07:13
stood out to her you saw him with
00:07:15
another man at
00:07:18
for and she said that if anybody could
00:07:20
have hurt Mitchell it would have been
00:07:22
that boy that's what everybody described
00:07:24
him and called him that boy young female
00:07:27
J she's saying other guy was with this
00:07:30
guy and that's gay from what she's
00:07:32
saying and that uh this car has been
00:07:34
here a
00:07:35
lot police started to look for the
00:07:38
suspect crime scene investigators worked
00:07:41
their way through the
00:07:44
property I am a certified blood stain
00:07:47
pattered analyst so I was analyzing what
00:07:50
types of blood smears there were or
00:07:53
stains there were there was passive
00:07:55
blood spatter there was pooling spatter
00:07:58
most of what was on the wall walls were
00:08:00
what we call contact transfer where a
00:08:02
bloody object makes contact with a non-
00:08:05
bloody surface so that being said I
00:08:08
didn't see any impact spatter or
00:08:10
anything like that that would come from
00:08:12
a possible
00:08:15
firearm one of the critical pieces of
00:08:17
evidence that police identified very
00:08:20
early on which is very significant to us
00:08:22
was a 90° blood drop that was at the
00:08:25
threshold of this crime scene at the
00:08:26
door clearly out of place detectives had
00:08:29
the foresight to say that's out of place
00:08:31
we need to swab
00:08:34
that we knew for one that wasn't Mell
00:08:37
Jones because he didn't leave the room
00:08:39
until he was transported by medical
00:08:41
personnel so we knew that had to be our
00:08:44
suspect's
00:08:45
blood the variety of blood stains
00:08:48
provided Vital Information about the
00:08:50
relationship between Mitchell and the
00:08:52
person who killed
00:08:53
him didn't rifle through a bunch of
00:08:56
drawers or anything like it was a
00:08:58
robbery
00:09:00
we know that the the killer was covered
00:09:03
with blood because especially right here
00:09:06
you'll see the uh blood transfer on the
00:09:09
sofa and that's a pattern transfer from
00:09:12
the clothing and you can tell it looks
00:09:14
like somebody sat down that was covered
00:09:16
with blood they sat on the sofa to rest
00:09:19
for a minute that indicates that he's
00:09:22
not in fear of anybody coming right to
00:09:25
the
00:09:26
house it indicates a level of comfort
00:09:29
inside of the
00:09:32
residence the suspect also seemed to
00:09:35
have been welcomed into the property
00:09:37
there's no forc entry to the residence
00:09:41
there's no damage to the door frame
00:09:43
indicating the U door was opened most
00:09:46
likely by Mitchell
00:09:48
Jones but the murder weapon remained a
00:09:52
mystery when Mitchell called now one and
00:09:54
said that he was shot it had kind of
00:09:56
confused us because he had so many
00:09:58
multiple um stab wounds and we could
00:10:01
never find a gun or shell
00:10:04
casing perpetrators of homicide are much
00:10:07
more likely to use a handgun than they
00:10:09
are a knife in fact knives are only used
00:10:12
in about 10% of cases according to the
00:10:14
FBI in his 911 call Mitchell actually
00:10:17
says that he's been shot rather than
00:10:19
that he's been
00:10:21
stabbed when the autopsy was completed
00:10:24
there was no bullet wounds all the
00:10:26
medical examiner can tell us is that
00:10:28
there were multiple stab
00:10:30
wounds I talked to the medical examiner
00:10:33
who performed the autopsy and instead of
00:10:36
been able to indicate the exact number
00:10:39
he identified them as clusters couldn't
00:10:42
actually count how many his uh aord was
00:10:46
punctured one of his lungs was punctured
00:10:49
uh numerous other near fatal injuries
00:10:54
occurred the scene upstairs provided
00:10:56
more insight into Mitchell's
00:10:58
relationship with his killer
00:11:01
when I initially went into the master
00:11:03
bedroom there were candles that had been
00:11:05
lit which indicate there was possible
00:11:08
romantic
00:11:10
involvement the crime scene tells you
00:11:13
that this had to been somebody that was
00:11:15
close to Mitchell some kind of passion
00:11:17
involved for someone to kill Mitchell
00:11:20
like that we also learned that he
00:11:22
happened to be single and was dating
00:11:24
other
00:11:26
men these things had to be looked at
00:11:28
when we didn't have any actionable leads
00:11:30
at the beginning of the
00:11:33
investigation the police needed to
00:11:35
investigate Mitchell's lovers but they
00:11:37
were still missing a critical piece of
00:11:41
evidence we learned on that first day
00:11:44
that uh the suspect had taken Mitchell's
00:11:47
cell phone your entire life is on the
00:11:50
phone so we didn't have a whole lot of
00:11:52
who he was with last who did he call who
00:11:54
did he
00:11:55
contact police tracked down one of
00:11:57
Mitchell's close friends
00:12:00
Jasmine in a text message to her
00:12:03
Mitchell said he was in an abusive
00:12:06
relationship I think when people think
00:12:09
about domestic violence they assume that
00:12:11
the victims are always women and the
00:12:12
perpetrators are always men and while
00:12:14
that's usually the case so in the US
00:12:16
it's estimated that one in Four Women
00:12:18
will be the victims of domestic violence
00:12:20
at some point in their lives one in nine
00:12:22
men in the United States are also the
00:12:24
victims of domestic violence and if
00:12:27
you're a gay man your goes way back up
00:12:30
to the same rate as
00:12:33
women because Mitchell's messages didn't
00:12:35
name who was abusive detectives needed
00:12:38
to check his relationships and start
00:12:40
ruling people
00:12:42
out one of the pictures Mitchell had
00:12:45
sent uh of that boy to Jasmine was uh a
00:12:49
FaceTime photo of the male and he was
00:12:51
shirtless uh in that photo I noticed
00:12:54
that there were praying hands on tattoos
00:12:57
and the tattoo was of a Praying hand on
00:12:59
his chest with a rest in peace and the
00:13:02
date of when that person was deceased so
00:13:05
I did a hashtag search and I found a
00:13:08
post made by a person named Eric when I
00:13:12
clicked on the profile I saw that that
00:13:15
tattoo matched the same tattoo that I
00:13:17
was looking at from that boy and that's
00:13:19
how I was able to identify
00:13:22
him the police tracked down a friend
00:13:25
named Eric and brought him in for an
00:13:27
interview the faster we get to the jail
00:13:30
the faster you'll be able to get
00:13:31
out Eric told the police that he'd been
00:13:34
hanging out with another male at the
00:13:36
time of the murder detective Ry and I
00:13:39
went to the apartment complex of this
00:13:42
smil that he was hanging out with and as
00:13:44
we were getting off the elevator
00:13:47
detective Ry noticed a dog poop um on
00:13:51
the side of the
00:13:52
elevator this bizarre observation
00:13:55
actually became very important after
00:13:57
they checked Eric's cell phone
00:13:59
there was a picture that he had taken of
00:14:02
the same dog poop that we saw and he had
00:14:06
sent it to a close friends of his which
00:14:09
at the time of him taking that photo and
00:14:12
sending it there was no way he would
00:14:14
have had enough time to send that photo
00:14:16
at that time then drive to Mitchell's
00:14:18
house to commit the homicide that
00:14:20
picture gave Eric an alibi he wasn't
00:14:24
[Music]
00:14:26
there with Eric completely cleared of
00:14:29
all charges the police were back to
00:14:31
square one they searched the area
00:14:34
looking for
00:14:35
cameras a lot of people have rain door
00:14:38
cameras or ADT Security or any number of
00:14:43
cameras around their house and if we see
00:14:45
any of those we try to make
00:14:47
contact and we did locate One camera
00:14:51
that was in the vicinity of the uh
00:14:54
scene the video shows a vehicle pulling
00:14:57
into the residence
00:15:04
it left maybe a minute or two after the
00:15:07
911
00:15:10
call you can't see a tag number on the
00:15:12
vehicle but you can see the brake lights
00:15:15
pretty clearly and 2 weeks prior we see
00:15:19
another vehicle that has the same brake
00:15:22
lights and this is daytime and you can
00:15:24
actually see it's a black vehicle or
00:15:26
dark colored vehicle
00:15:29
numerous people in the office helped us
00:15:31
look for vehicles that had similar tail
00:15:34
lights and then we finally identified
00:15:36
the vehicle it
00:15:40
was it was a Buick lern we searched
00:15:44
around uh to see if you know in the
00:15:46
locally have we stopped anything similar
00:15:49
to it and we just couldn't find
00:15:53
anything at this point the case stalled
00:15:55
because we didn't have anything to go by
00:15:58
the long longer the time goes on the
00:16:00
less evidence you're going to have
00:16:02
because phone data only lasts certain
00:16:05
amount of time video only last a certain
00:16:07
amount of
00:16:08
time and unfortunately uh some of the
00:16:12
dating sites he was on would not honor a
00:16:15
subpoena from us for
00:16:17
records it was very
00:16:20
disheartening it was so frustrating at
00:16:23
this point Mitchell's mom at the time
00:16:25
was very upset she was calling for
00:16:27
answers and and wanting us to do
00:16:30
everything and and at one point she was
00:16:32
very upset with me uh because she didn't
00:16:34
think I was doing a good
00:16:38
job with no more leads the case went
00:16:41
cold for 4 months before a digital
00:16:45
forensic
00:16:48
breakthrough one of the detectives in
00:16:51
the office just come back from training
00:16:53
with the
00:16:54
FBI he had heard about a geofence
00:16:57
technology which where you put a a
00:17:00
virtual fence around the location and
00:17:03
any phone that crosses that that number
00:17:05
would show
00:17:07
up analysts at Google were asked to
00:17:10
identify the phones that were active
00:17:12
close to the crime scene we saw
00:17:14
essentially that there were four users
00:17:17
that were within the Geo fence that we
00:17:19
submitted to them three of those were
00:17:21
quickly eliminated as potential suspects
00:17:23
because they were
00:17:25
neighbors and then there was one user
00:17:28
that was unknown to us had not been a
00:17:30
name even on the radar in terms of the
00:17:32
investigation we asked Google to unmask
00:17:35
the number and to give us the
00:17:36
information
00:17:40
Associated the email came back to Dante
00:17:43
[Music]
00:17:45
Holmes we have a person now let's start
00:17:48
digging on this person let's start
00:17:50
working let's start going he was
00:17:52
actually on probation for a violent
00:17:54
crime uh he lived in the Atlanta area
00:17:59
we obtained a search warrant for that
00:18:01
iCloud and we received what was uploaded
00:18:03
well that night of the homicide there
00:18:06
was a picture that was uploaded on the
00:18:09
iCloud for Dante with an ankle um
00:18:12
wrapped up in bandage around it so it
00:18:15
looked like the person had been
00:18:19
cut there was one other key piece of
00:18:21
evidence that linked Dante Holmes to the
00:18:24
scene of the
00:18:25
crime we noticed that Dante Holmes's
00:18:28
mother had a bu
00:18:31
lern we also learned that Dante Holmes
00:18:34
was a primary operator of that
00:18:37
vehicle we all agreed that the next step
00:18:39
would be to try to obtain an arrest
00:18:41
warrant from a judge to execute that on
00:18:43
Dante Holmes in the hopes that we would
00:18:45
be able to get some additional
00:18:46
information either forensically or
00:18:48
through an
00:18:49
[Music]
00:18:55
interview Dante Holmes was arrested and
00:18:58
brought into
00:19:00
custody he was transported back to Cobb
00:19:03
County where we interviewed him we also
00:19:06
collected his DNA to compare to the
00:19:09
suspect DNA at the
00:19:11
scene it was a very emotional roller
00:19:14
coaster even going into the interview
00:19:17
because knowing all the work that we had
00:19:19
put in all the man hours we have put
00:19:21
[Music]
00:19:23
in this is the climax how you doing
00:19:27
detective Grim set
00:19:30
during the interview we're looking for
00:19:31
several things we're looking at uh how
00:19:33
they move how they
00:19:35
look what we get to the meat and
00:19:38
potatoes um ask you a couple basic
00:19:41
questions here when they're answering
00:19:44
questions how's their tone you know
00:19:46
we'll ask several questions which
00:19:48
they're going to give positive answers
00:19:50
to last name is holes Hol mes yes sir
00:19:55
Dante d u n t yes sir
00:19:59
how's that compared to an answer when we
00:20:01
ask him was he at the murder scene what
00:20:04
I want to talk to you about is Mitchell
00:20:09
Jones do you know Mitchell
00:20:12
Jones that's going to be slightly
00:20:14
different we're looking for little hints
00:20:16
that they'll drop there would be no
00:20:19
reason for you to phone to be at
00:20:22
Mitchell Jones's housing no reason hm no
00:20:25
reason no reason whatsoever What's going
00:20:28
at the start of the interview he was
00:20:31
very sure of himself very
00:20:35
standoffish if I told you that was not
00:20:37
the correct answer what would you say to
00:20:39
that that it was
00:20:42
wrong you're not being honest
00:20:48
with this puts you at Mitchell's
00:20:53
house the officers started to put more
00:20:56
information to Dante and that's what we
00:20:58
need to find out that is a specific
00:21:01
technique in interrogations where you
00:21:03
let the suspect start talking and then
00:21:07
you start coming with information that
00:21:08
you already have evidence for saying
00:21:10
actually we know this we know you're
00:21:12
drived by a car we know you've been to
00:21:14
the house multiple times your phone puts
00:21:16
you in that same car at the house rather
00:21:20
than putting all your cards on the table
00:21:21
at once you are selectively releasing
00:21:23
that information to see how the suspect
00:21:26
changes their story or whether they
00:21:27
change their story
00:21:29
and then to try and trip them up in the
00:21:30
lie and hopefully to end up in a
00:21:34
disclosure that's was
00:21:38
czy as we confronted him with the
00:21:41
evidence that refuted what he was saying
00:21:44
we have all these answers already but we
00:21:46
need to know what happened in the house
00:21:48
that's our question he began the only
00:21:52
thing I can think of looking
00:21:54
defeated did he become aggressive toward
00:21:57
you did something go
00:22:00
wrong we just don't understand it's not
00:22:03
like television where you know you've
00:22:05
got good C bad cop detective Stoddard
00:22:08
and I both took the you know the
00:22:12
grandfatherly
00:22:14
approach did you get scared we know
00:22:18
sometimes things are unintentional
00:22:21
research very much finds that being nice
00:22:23
and treating people as human beings and
00:22:25
asking them about what they know rather
00:22:27
than trying to force it out of them them
00:22:28
is a much more useful strategy the idea
00:22:31
is that if they trust you they're more
00:22:32
likely to disclose the truth to you and
00:22:34
they're more likely to give you
00:22:35
information that you need sometimes
00:22:37
things happen that we don't intend to
00:22:39
happen we know what happened we know you
00:22:42
need to get it off your
00:22:44
chest we know you've got a lot on your
00:22:49
mind with Dante uncooperative the
00:22:52
officers sat and waited in
00:22:57
silence having the really long
00:23:00
silence
00:23:02
feels really intimidating I think if
00:23:05
you're in a room with two police
00:23:06
officers and you know what they think
00:23:09
happened and you know what happened it
00:23:12
must be
00:23:13
terrifying it's almost a game of
00:23:15
well obviously we're not going to end
00:23:18
this you're not going to leave until you
00:23:19
start
00:23:21
talking for the following 4 minutes no
00:23:25
words were exchanged
00:23:30
[Music]
00:23:35
and then D Holmes
00:23:37
finally broke
00:23:46
down I'm going be 100% honest with
00:23:50
y'all come in the house people talk to
00:23:53
you like I don't want to do this like
00:23:59
he had the back turn and turn
00:24:02
around and he tried to stab
00:24:05
me then we start
00:24:09
fighting I hit him over the head with a
00:24:11
piece of glass and he dropped the
00:24:14
knife and I grabbed the knife and he was
00:24:18
on top of me so I stabbed him in the
00:24:23
back more than 25 individual wounds that
00:24:27
Dante claimed were in
00:24:31
self-defense I had the St CU if I want
00:24:34
them I would have been
00:24:37
there we did not believe in
00:24:40
self-defense the scene indicated is the
00:24:44
opposite Mitchell had broken it off with
00:24:47
him didn't want to be involved cuz
00:24:49
Mitchell liked to date people he he
00:24:52
didn't want to be tied down to one
00:24:53
person Mitchell had broke it off with
00:24:56
Dante Dante had convinced him hey let me
00:24:59
come over one last time they gone up in
00:25:02
a in a bedroom and that's when Mitchell
00:25:05
Jones was
00:25:08
assaulted preceding intimate partner
00:25:11
murder you often find what I just
00:25:13
generally referred to us strong emotions
00:25:15
and that can be anger that can be things
00:25:17
caused by someone saying I want to break
00:25:19
up something that ignites the first move
00:25:23
towards violence and it makes sense to
00:25:27
me that they were talking talk about
00:25:28
breaking up and then this started not to
00:25:30
say that that excuses it by any means
00:25:32
but that is exactly the kind of thing
00:25:33
that is often the precipitating factor
00:25:36
for intimate partner
00:25:40
murder once he admitted that he did it
00:25:44
it was just such an Elation and at the
00:25:47
same time a
00:25:49
relief put your hands
00:25:51
together Dante's DNA also matched the
00:25:54
swab taken from the scene of the crime
00:25:59
the case never went to
00:26:02
trial on January 6th 2020 Dante Holmes
00:26:05
pleaded guilty to aggravated assault
00:26:08
aggravated battery and malice
00:26:11
murder he was sentenced to life in
00:26:15
prison Mitchell Jones's family was
00:26:17
grateful uh for the fact that there
00:26:19
would be some finality and that they
00:26:21
knew that Dante Holmes would serve life
00:26:23
in prison based on uh this brutal crime
00:26:25
that he had committed against their
00:26:27
their loved one Mitchell
00:26:30
with this case technology played a huge
00:26:33
role having the video surveillance
00:26:35
having the iCloud photo that was
00:26:37
uploaded having geofence being there all
00:26:40
of those things collected together put
00:26:43
everything together as a big puzzle led
00:26:45
us to Dante Holmes and the conviction of
00:26:48
the
00:26:48
murder being a homicide detective is
00:26:52
like you're speaking for people who
00:26:54
cannot speak victims can't tell you what
00:26:57
happened is satisfying knowing that it
00:27:01
will help bring closure to the family to
00:27:03
the victim's
00:27:14
family in the US it's estimated that 30%
00:27:17
of the population have done online
00:27:19
dating almost 100 million people but
00:27:24
online interaction lacks the non-verbal
00:27:26
cues that we rely on on to assess
00:27:29
honesty you can never truly know
00:27:32
somebody that you've met online if
00:27:34
you've only interacted with them online
00:27:37
and that Honesty in the relationship
00:27:39
develops over continual face-to-face
00:27:41
meetings which is all important for
00:27:43
human beings in us trying to understand
00:27:47
what it is we're seeing in front of us
00:27:49
so understanding doesn't depend on what
00:27:52
I say it also depends on how I behave
00:27:56
and the interaction of those two things
00:27:59
as the Quest for romance moves
00:28:00
increasingly online new ways to lie are
00:28:03
quickly evolving research has found that
00:28:06
more than half of Us online daters admit
00:28:08
to lying in their profiles in order to
00:28:11
detect when someone's deceptive you need
00:28:13
to speak to
00:28:14
them face to
00:28:18
face and in our next
00:28:21
case in the UK in the county of
00:28:24
Nottinghamshire the transition from
00:28:26
screen time to time in in real life was
00:28:30
problematic with messages misread red
00:28:34
flags never
00:28:37
spotted Colston
00:28:39
Basset a small village southeast of the
00:28:42
city of
00:28:44
Nottingham home to CLA Abel
00:28:48
white CLA Abel white was 47 years old
00:28:51
she was a mom of three she had
00:28:53
previously been married and had always
00:28:54
been working on a
00:28:57
farm when her marriage ended Claire left
00:28:59
the farm and went to live in the closet
00:29:02
Village of coulston Basset she was
00:29:04
living a very rural life there working
00:29:07
in his Stables looking after horses CLA
00:29:09
loved animals and she was also running a
00:29:11
really successful business walking dogs
00:29:13
at the time and people who knew her
00:29:16
would always talk of her as this really
00:29:18
popular well-liked sociable
00:29:21
woman but on February 26th
00:29:26
2022 CLA failed to turn up at the stable
00:29:29
where she
00:29:32
worked a friend of hers turned up on the
00:29:34
morning and CLA wasn't there like normal
00:29:36
tending to the horses so something
00:29:38
started to seem a little bit odd to
00:29:42
her Claire's father he decided to pop
00:29:45
over to the house to check on her he
00:29:48
called up there was no
00:29:50
answer he walked up the stairs that was
00:29:54
when he found CLA laying in a pool of
00:29:57
blood
00:30:01
Claire's father called an ambulance he
00:30:04
says she looks dead she's white and
00:30:06
she's cold but they ask him to start
00:30:08
doing CPR and mouth to mouth on her
00:30:11
which must have been incredibly
00:30:15
traumatic when the ambulance arrived CLA
00:30:18
had already succumbed to horrific
00:30:20
injuries and was pronounced
00:30:25
dead when the police arrived at the
00:30:27
crime scene they found a number of
00:30:28
details around in the room there was
00:30:30
blood splattered everywhere she had
00:30:32
blunt force trauma to the Head she'd
00:30:35
been heavily assaulted to the face there
00:30:37
was Slash wounds on her neck they
00:30:39
actually discovered stab wounds in her
00:30:41
chest as well CLA had been left so long
00:30:44
that riger mortis had started to set in
00:30:46
on her
00:30:48
body the police now had a murder
00:30:51
investigation on their
00:30:53
hands the house was made a crime
00:30:55
scene the police naturally will look for
00:30:58
details of forensic evidence
00:31:01
unfortunately cla's phone had also been
00:31:03
removed from the scene there was no
00:31:05
evidence that they could check on her
00:31:06
mobile phone and crucially no murder
00:31:09
weapon found at the scene nor was there
00:31:11
any other DNA
00:31:14
evidence police are up against it here
00:31:17
they have a killer on the loose at this
00:31:19
point and it's really difficult if the
00:31:21
police don't have some of these solid
00:31:23
bits of evidence to work
00:31:26
off professor Coral dando is a forensic
00:31:30
psychologist whenever we go into any
00:31:34
situation we leave some sort of trace of
00:31:37
having been there but when people go
00:31:39
prepared to leave as little trace
00:31:42
evidence as possible it makes the
00:31:44
police's job and the forensic scientist
00:31:47
job well almost
00:31:50
impossible the police decided to use
00:31:53
ultraviolet powder dusted over the crime
00:31:55
scene to try and find more evidence
00:31:59
they'll powder around the whole scene
00:32:00
Turn the Lights Out and this will then
00:32:02
show up evidence that the naked eye
00:32:04
can't
00:32:06
see the police make a significant
00:32:10
Discovery they find shoe prints which
00:32:13
they discover could only have been
00:32:15
caused by the killer these prints were
00:32:17
made whilst cla's blood was still
00:32:21
fresh the shoe prints were a useful lead
00:32:24
but the police had very little else to
00:32:26
go on
00:32:28
[Music]
00:32:31
the crime was committed in a remote
00:32:33
location where there weren't many
00:32:37
cameras the police appealed to the
00:32:39
public for
00:32:41
information they got a really
00:32:43
significant breakthrough one of cla's
00:32:46
neighbors were away on
00:32:48
holiday they believe that they might
00:32:51
have caught cla's murder on one of their
00:32:54
CCTV cameras they call the police fly
00:32:57
back from holiday and rush home to give
00:32:59
them the
00:33:01
evidence the camera captured crucial
00:33:05
footage a figure loitering
00:33:08
nearby play's house is behind the fence
00:33:12
this behavior is very suspicious I think
00:33:15
most of us would look at this behavior
00:33:17
and think this is really odd to be
00:33:19
walking partway across a neighbor's
00:33:21
drive next door to someone that we now
00:33:24
know had been
00:33:26
murdered the video gave the police vital
00:33:30
Clues Professor Vasilios kajan opos is a
00:33:34
specialist in cyber
00:33:36
crime he's wearing a jacket he has a
00:33:39
rock sock and he's wearing Adidas
00:33:43
sneakers with a distinctive three
00:33:45
stripes that mat the footprint that was
00:33:47
found in cla's
00:33:50
home but even more shocking the video
00:33:53
was recording
00:33:55
sound the audio was traffic and never
00:34:00
released we can hear CLA she's having a
00:34:03
conversation with a neighbor and we see
00:34:05
this male sort of hanging around waiting
00:34:07
for a little while he then goes and
00:34:09
knocks on Claire's door the dogs are
00:34:12
barking she lets him
00:34:14
[Music]
00:34:16
in once he then enters the house what we
00:34:20
can then hear which is really just
00:34:23
unbelievable and harrowing is Claire's
00:34:26
screams as she is being
00:34:30
murdered the person in the footage was
00:34:33
now the prime suspect for Claire's
00:34:36
murder now they needed to work out
00:34:38
exactly who the killer was and try to
00:34:41
trace their journey to and from cla's
00:34:46
house scrolling back through the footage
00:34:48
on cla's neighbors CCTV the police Hit
00:34:51
Upon a clue which was captured purely by
00:34:54
chance
00:34:58
[Music]
00:35:01
this is a really rural area of the
00:35:03
country it's dark it doesn't look as if
00:35:06
there are any street lights so this
00:35:08
would be really really difficult to see
00:35:10
but it's the fact that if we watch
00:35:12
carefully a car drives past this enables
00:35:17
the CCTV camera to pick up this person
00:35:22
on a bike riding in the direction of
00:35:26
Claire's house
00:35:30
this short Glimpse gave the police Vital
00:35:32
Information about the route he took to
00:35:34
her
00:35:35
house but they still had no idea who her
00:35:38
killer
00:35:40
was the investigators scanned the
00:35:43
cameras along a cycle way to Corston
00:35:46
busard where CLA was staying and they
00:35:49
can see someone cying on the night of
00:35:52
the
00:35:53
murder we can see the light color
00:35:56
backpack on this piece of footage and
00:35:58
the previous footage had an individual
00:36:01
with a light color
00:36:03
backpack this crime happening in such a
00:36:06
remote place means that no one else
00:36:08
would have been around at the time and
00:36:11
the image of this guy matched the CCTV
00:36:14
from the neighbor's camera too so the
00:36:16
police were really on to
00:36:19
something police Tracked Down CCTV
00:36:22
cameras close to cla's home and after an
00:36:25
extensive search they found multiple
00:36:27
Clips showing a cyclist with similar
00:36:29
identifying
00:36:34
features it gives more evidence more
00:36:37
clues to the police in terms of what the
00:36:40
person might look like what they might
00:36:43
have been wearing and then that makes it
00:36:45
easier to spot them in other footage and
00:36:48
create a map of their
00:36:51
movements the police thought they had
00:36:53
caught the killer on camera but they
00:36:55
still couldn't identify the suspect
00:36:59
pressure was mounting to find Claire's
00:37:02
murderer 10 days into the investigation
00:37:06
the police have another huge
00:37:08
breakthrough someone from the team
00:37:10
manages to locate cla's phone at the
00:37:12
bottom of a local River and they somehow
00:37:15
managed to get it working again the
00:37:18
police accessed messages which revealed
00:37:21
that Claire had been having a
00:37:22
relationship with a younger
00:37:24
man CLA had been using a dating website
00:37:27
messaging this younger guy who was 26
00:37:30
years old they hadn't really known each
00:37:33
other that long they'd gone on a few
00:37:35
coffee dates stuff like
00:37:37
that he was identified as John
00:37:44
Jessup he was a local guy local to
00:37:46
Nottingham Shire on the surface of quite
00:37:49
a normal guy to be honest he was quite
00:37:51
Keen tennis player someone who hadn't
00:37:53
been on the police's radar he had no
00:37:55
History of Violence no DNA in the
00:37:58
police's system at any point there was a
00:38:02
21-year age gap between John and
00:38:05
CLA as the police are sort of delving
00:38:08
into the message chain between these two
00:38:10
they kind of work out that most of this
00:38:13
was John instigating stuff with CLA
00:38:15
they'd met each other a few times they'd
00:38:17
only been intimate once and then it's at
00:38:19
this point CLA decides to call the
00:38:22
relationship off um we can see in the
00:38:24
messages that she was kind of having
00:38:27
some out because of the age
00:38:29
difference it's at this point where we
00:38:31
see a real switch in John's
00:38:36
Behavior he absolutely feels rejected he
00:38:40
starts bombarding CLA with
00:38:44
messages there's one really really long
00:38:46
message where he says he starts to feel
00:38:49
really used and wants answers from CLA
00:38:52
about why she's decided to end the
00:38:54
relationship and leave
00:38:55
him John appeared to have a motive for
00:38:59
killing
00:39:00
CLA CLA says she feels conflicted about
00:39:03
the age difference she sort of wants to
00:39:04
call the relationship off and I just
00:39:07
wonder if this was some kind of trigger
00:39:10
point for John
00:39:12
jesser there was something else that
00:39:14
raised
00:39:16
suspicions John is someone who had never
00:39:19
come forward at any point to help the
00:39:21
police's investigation despite being in
00:39:23
cla's life in the buildup to this crime
00:39:27
the police also made another important
00:39:29
discovery about
00:39:31
John he doesn't have a driver's license
00:39:34
so the only way he could have come in
00:39:36
was with a
00:39:40
bike John Jessup was now suspect number
00:39:44
one but the police still needed evidence
00:39:47
to link him to cla's
00:39:50
murder the police start their digging
00:39:53
and what they find is some CCTV from
00:39:56
around 18 miles away from where CLA was
00:40:01
killed the footage was recorded while
00:40:04
Johan ma was working in the
00:40:06
[Music]
00:40:09
store he took a pastry and he came and
00:40:12
paid for it and uh he was just a normal
00:40:14
person he was polite bought the stuff
00:40:16
and then left the shop he was just like
00:40:19
a exhausted person a major breakthrough
00:40:22
the camera captured John Jessup close to
00:40:25
Claire's home just a few hours before
00:40:27
her murder this footage is really
00:40:30
important for the police because it's
00:40:31
giving them the person how he looks what
00:40:35
he's wearing the details of the rock
00:40:37
sock um and in particular we can see the
00:40:41
distinctive three stripes Snickers that
00:40:44
he is wearing that we know this person
00:40:46
outside CLA H was wearing there isn't
00:40:50
any such thing as a series of
00:40:52
coincidences John doesn't have a driving
00:40:55
license and he doesn't have a car it's
00:40:57
more likely that he would have had to
00:40:59
ride his bike to cla's
00:41:04
house this was now enough evidence for
00:41:07
the police to go and arrest
00:41:10
him 11 days after cla's death the police
00:41:13
moved
00:41:14
[Music]
00:41:18
in police go to John's place of work to
00:41:21
arrest him when they go in he's hiding
00:41:24
in the toilet they go in with tasers cuz
00:41:26
they're not really sure how he's going
00:41:28
to react remember this is someone who's
00:41:30
just committed a really brutal and
00:41:32
frenzied stabbing of someone towards me
00:41:36
put your head get all right
00:41:40
bu understand what's
00:41:43
happening this officer here needs to
00:41:45
tell you something listen very carefully
00:41:47
all right I'm not doing this words are
00:41:50
carriers of information carriers of
00:41:53
deception and we know that the more that
00:41:55
people say the more likely is that we
00:41:57
can understand whether what they're
00:41:59
saying is being deceptive the fact that
00:42:02
he's immediately said I didn't do
00:42:04
anything I think is unusual to us but
00:42:08
it's not at all odd for those people
00:42:10
that work with um offenders such as him
00:42:14
time of arrest was 8:46 I'm not doing
00:42:16
this let's
00:42:18
go I think that the way he's behaving
00:42:21
there is in line with all of the CCTV
00:42:25
footage that we've seen he's quite a
00:42:27
calm measured individual orbe it that he
00:42:31
had committed a very violent attack on
00:42:33
CLA and ultimately murdered her and he's
00:42:37
just very silent very measured and it
00:42:41
doesn't seem to come as any surprise to
00:42:43
him which suggests that maybe
00:42:45
he lacks
00:42:48
empathy but again you can clearly see
00:42:50
from his face it's the same man in the
00:42:53
shop and the evidence is obviously there
00:42:56
to arrest him
00:42:57
[Music]
00:43:00
John Jessup was taken into custody and
00:43:03
questioned the police interview John
00:43:05
over the course of 3 days initially he
00:43:07
denies any involvement but on October
00:43:10
the 12th he confesses to killing
00:43:14
CLA the police were able to piece
00:43:16
together exactly what had happened the
00:43:18
night of cla's
00:43:20
murder on the 25th of February John
00:43:23
Jessup Cycles 18 miles to get to cla's
00:43:26
house he leaves his phone at his
00:43:29
home John Cycles past cla's house he
00:43:33
stores the bike away and sort of waits
00:43:35
in the shadows for her to get
00:43:37
back listens to her talking to her
00:43:40
neighbor and then Waits and goes into
00:43:41
her home the police estimate that he was
00:43:43
at her house for around an hour during
00:43:45
the
00:43:46
murder after killing CLA Jon steals her
00:43:49
mobile phone he goes to a local stream
00:43:51
and discards it in there then gets back
00:43:53
on the bike puts his hat back on starts
00:43:56
a cycle back
00:43:58
home but the question remained was her
00:44:01
murder
00:44:03
premeditated his version of event is
00:44:05
that he went over there they'd had an
00:44:07
argument and in the sort of Heat of the
00:44:09
Moment he'd grabbed a knife and killed
00:44:13
her the tricky thing about this case was
00:44:16
that the police were never able to
00:44:18
locate the murder weapon that there
00:44:20
meant the prosecution had this real
00:44:23
challenge that they couldn't prove that
00:44:24
this was a premeditated murder
00:44:30
John Jessup
00:44:33
confessed there was no
00:44:36
trial John pleaded guilty to murder at
00:44:39
notingham Crown Court in October
00:44:43
2022 on January 4th 2023 he was
00:44:47
sentenced to life with a minimum term of
00:44:50
17
00:44:52
years the fact that that murder weapon
00:44:55
was never found meant that John got got
00:44:57
a lesser
00:44:58
sentence I think he thought that he
00:45:00
would get away with it definitely and
00:45:03
and in fact arguably if cla's next door
00:45:06
neighbor CCTV footage wasn't available
00:45:10
chances how would have got away with it
00:45:13
the CCTV and the digital forensics they
00:45:16
were essential to get a conviction
00:45:18
within this case because there was no
00:45:20
DNA evidence that was found in the house
00:45:22
the footage that was caught on cla's
00:45:23
neighbor's camera and that footage that
00:45:25
we see of John in the shop it was
00:45:28
essential you know we would not have
00:45:29
been able to reach that
00:45:31
point when you think it wasn't really
00:45:33
that much of a relationship that they
00:45:35
had built for that then to have
00:45:37
escalated into CLA being killed in this
00:45:40
way it just disproportionate is the word
00:45:42
that comes to
00:45:44
mind CLA did nothing wrong and women
00:45:47
should be able to say no this just
00:45:50
speaks to an issue that keeps continuing
00:45:52
to happen with a minority of men who
00:45:55
were not able to to accept someone
00:45:58
turning them down or rejecting them it
00:46:01
is just so tragic that this loving
00:46:05
mother of three that was starting this
00:46:06
new chapter in her life has had her life
00:46:09
taken away from her so senselessly
