was to provide us with some
detail about the suspect.

and there was a snap,
a photograph of the truck

on the other end of that gun

All indications were that this
was a very loving relationship.

Certainly did not fit
the profile of someone

who would be
an intended target,

be a victim of homicide.

The first thing is
to try to obtain

video of the vehicle to
determine its route of travel

out of the neighborhood.

Time is absolutely of the
essence, because from the time

that the initial officers and
investigators make the scene,

we're behind the eight ball
because the suspect has

fled in a vehicle
within a half an hour,

you know, he could be 40
or 50 miles outside of Dallas.

of the license plate

or to get a picture
of the shooter's face.

that was very helpful

was that in the right
rear glass of the vehicle,

there was a white T sticker.

We thought that that
was representing

the Texas Rangers
baseball team, which is

So that sort
of narrows your focus.

for a needle in a haystack.

some from residences.

able to track the vehicle

up until it reached I-35,
which is a very busy freeway

that runs through Dallas.

a couple of erratic turns

throughout the neighborhood,
I believe, to see

if someone was following him.

And then he turned
onto his service road,

which led to him
getting on the highway

and traveling, um, eastbound.

But we lost it after
it got on the freeway

because there was no
cameras on that route.

lost track of the vehicle,

the trail had
essentially gone cold.

a license plate.

a clear description

And it's the only
evidence that we

have linking us to our killer.

look at is shot placement.

were pretty close together.

some experience with using

definitely believe it wasn't

Barnes about it,

comment to him was,

because she had several
cameras mounted to her house,

and we wanted
to take a closer look

minor detail that we missed.

The doorbell footage that I
watched of Jamie and Jennifer,

it really, you know,
kind of hit home

because he had no idea
what was around the corner

It was just a normal day,

turning for the day.

you're being murdered

his face just because

The immediate thoughts were,

But Jennifer gave a very good
explanation of who it was.

She said that she believed
it was the-- the guy that

used to live next door
to her old neighbor,

and he from time to time--
after they got evicted,

time to time, he would just
wander around the backyard

of that residence.

that you learned

She passed it over
without any question.

It would have been
a huge red flag for her

not to pass her phone over.

with her girlfriend.

We believe that those may
have possibly been deleted.

We intentionally didn't speak
with Jennifer about Darrin

because we believed that we
needed to learn a little bit

more about the relationship
before we approached her on it,

so we wanted to keep
everything under wraps while we

continue the investigation.

- We certainly want
to follow this lead,

just like we follow any
leads, as quickly as possible.

And when I say extraordinary,

text messages and phone calls

only occurred over like,

a seven or eight-month period.

I mean, that's, like,
constant communication.

I mean, how could you

background done on Mr. Lopez.

We found out that Mr. Lopez
was a US Army veteran,

that he was a combat
veteran, that he

had had several deployments
to the Middle East,

that he had been
injured in combat,

and that he had won several
awards for his valor

as army soldier.

very badly injured,

saw his comrades killed
in a roadside bomb,

was permanently disabled with
a traumatic brain injury,

driving step by step,
hitting every single cell

about the violent things

that he would do to her, that

was his financial outlook.

Once we looked
into Jennifer's bank accounts,

we saw that she had made
several transfers to Darrin.

Also, she had provided him
with the credit card that had

a $40,000 credit limit
that she paid off,

so it had a zero balance.

So Jennifer had more than
just an emotional involvement
