Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 3, Episode 3

March 09, 2017 / 42:47

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five intriguing cases: the Roswell UFO incident, the disappearance of Dottie Kaler, the suspicious death of Marine Jeffrey Digman, the fraud case of Stephen Cox, and the arson of a church led by NFL legend Reggie White.

The Roswell segment discusses the 1947 crash of an unidentified object in New Mexico, featuring eyewitness accounts from Mac Brazel and Major Jesse Marcel, who claim the debris was not a weather balloon but something extraordinary. The episode highlights the military's cover-up and the ongoing debate about the existence of extraterrestrial life.

Next, the disappearance of Dottie Kaler, who struggled with agoraphobia, is examined. Her husband, Jewel Kaler, recounts the events leading to her vanishing after being dropped off at a BART station, leaving behind her purse and car, raising suspicions about her fate.

The episode then shifts to the case of Marine Jeffrey Digman, whose death was ruled a suicide despite his parents believing he was murdered. They present evidence suggesting foul play, including the trajectory of the bullet and unexplained injuries.

Lastly, the episode covers the fraudulent activities of Stephen Cox, who scammed investors out of millions, and the arson of a church associated with Reggie White, which was deemed a hate crime. The investigation into the church fire remains open.

TL;DR

This episode covers the Roswell UFO incident, Dottie Kaler's disappearance, Jeffrey Digman's suspicious death, Stephen Cox's fraud, and Reggie White's church arson.

00:01:30
in 1947 a mysterious craft was found on
00:01:35
a ranch outside of Roswell New Mexico
00:01:38
the government said that it was a
00:01:40
weather balloon
00:01:41
but eyewitnesses say that it was a UFO
00:01:51
Roswell New Mexico vocation of the most
00:01:55
famous UFO setting of all time in July
00:02:04
1947 a violent electrical storm swept
00:02:09
over the desolate plains of
00:02:10
south-central New Mexico
00:02:17
at his remote ranch house Mac Brazel
00:02:20
patiently wait about the lightning and
00:02:22
thunder Mac was a old-time cowboy I
00:02:28
guess you'd say he was pretty pretty
00:02:31
serious if he told you something you
00:02:33
could pretty well depend on it the story
00:02:43
is that Mac Brazel supposedly heard a
00:02:46
loud crash at some point during the
00:02:48
storm and didn't know how it related to
00:02:49
the storm or not according to his son
00:02:52
Mac was on the range the next day
00:02:55
looking to see which fields may have
00:02:56
gotten precipitation the night before so
00:02:58
they could move the livestock to those
00:02:59
fields because the grass would be better
00:03:01
there and in his process of looking to
00:03:04
see where the rain had come down he
00:03:06
found the debris field spread out near
00:03:08
his ranch house
00:03:18
something had crashed in one of his
00:03:21
fields the night before but it was
00:03:25
fragmented beyond identification the
00:03:30
debris field was approximately
00:03:31
three-quarters of a mile long maybe as
00:03:34
much as two or 300 feet in width
00:03:36
scattered along there were bits and
00:03:39
pieces of material we refused to call it
00:03:40
metal because from the descriptions we
00:03:42
have it was more of a plastic-like
00:03:44
material very strong very lightweight
00:03:46
the pieces of it were described as being
00:03:49
three or four feet long but as light as
00:03:51
a feather in his newsprint there were
00:03:53
metal beams that were slightly flexible
00:03:56
but very strong some of the metal pieces
00:04:01
appeared to have strange qualities and
00:04:04
unusual tensile properties
00:04:10
[Music]
00:04:14
they couldn't be cut and they couldn't
00:04:17
be burned
00:04:21
the following Monday Brazel reported his
00:04:24
discovery to the sheriff who informed
00:04:26
the nearby Roswell army base
00:04:30
[Music]
00:04:33
that afternoon Mac Brazel led two army
00:04:36
intelligence officers to the crash site
00:04:41
one of the officers was major Jesse
00:04:43
Marcel senior whose primary duty was to
00:04:46
investigate air accidents
00:04:50
stay there mr. Redl even with his
00:04:55
experience Marcel was unable to identify
00:04:57
the craft he died in 1982 but before his
00:05:02
death he gave the following interview
00:05:04
for a documentary film about UFOs they
00:05:08
were just frankly strewn all over the
00:05:10
area
00:05:11
Mariel but three-quarters of a mile long
00:05:13
and several hundred feet wide so we
00:05:15
proceeded to pick up the parts said I
00:05:18
tried to bend this stuff says it will
00:05:20
not Bend I even tried to burn that would
00:05:23
not burn see stuff weighs nothing it's
00:05:26
not in there thicker than tin fall says
00:05:29
we even tried making a dent in it with a
00:05:31
16 pound sledge hammer one thing I was
00:05:33
certain of being familiar with all our
00:05:36
dividends that it was not a weather
00:05:38
balloon nor an aircraft nor amiss
00:05:41
it was something else which we didn't
00:05:44
know what it was
00:05:47
major Marcel loaded his car with the
00:05:50
unusual debris and drove back to Roswell
00:05:54
on his way he stopped at home to show
00:05:57
his family what he had found
00:06:02
when he came back to the house he had
00:06:04
had a bunch of wreckage with him and he
00:06:06
brought the wreckage end of the house
00:06:07
actually awaking my mother and myself
00:06:09
out so we could view this because it's
00:06:12
so unusual it's about two o'clock in the
00:06:15
morning and spread it out so he could
00:06:17
get some basic idea of what it looked
00:06:19
like what it was Jesse Marcel was 11 at
00:06:24
the time he is one of the few people
00:06:28
known to have actually handled pieces of
00:06:30
the debris plane crashed we're all were
00:06:34
amazed by this debris that was there
00:06:36
probably because we didn't know what it
00:06:38
was you know just the unknown the most
00:06:43
remarkable fragment was a short piece of
00:06:45
I beam which was covered with strange
00:06:48
symbols and marquees it's like some kind
00:06:51
of hieroglyphics this writing could be
00:06:54
described as Egyptian type of hard looks
00:06:56
but not really the symbols that were in
00:06:59
the eye beams were more of a geometric
00:07:00
type configuration in various designs
00:07:04
it had a violet purple type of color and
00:07:07
it was actually an embossed part of the
00:07:09
metal itself years after this instant
00:07:12
happened we would talk privately among
00:07:15
ourselves about what the possibilities
00:07:17
of this what this thing was and I feel
00:07:21
that we well I know that we came to the
00:07:23
conclusion it was not of earthly origin
00:07:26
if I had not actually held pieces of it
00:07:29
in my hand I would not think that it
00:07:30
would be possible but because I happen
00:07:32
to see this that's the only reason I
00:07:34
believe it
00:07:36
major Marcel took the wreckage to the
00:07:39
Roswell base where he was stationed it's
00:07:42
believed that the next morning some of
00:07:44
the pieces were flown to Wright Field
00:07:46
near they go back on the way the plane
00:07:50
stopped at an air base in Fort Worth
00:07:52
Texas that same morning Colonel William
00:07:57
Blanchard the commanding officer in
00:07:59
Roswell went public with the story of
00:08:02
Mac Brazel discovery Colonel Blanchard
00:08:11
ordered lieutenant Walter Haught to
00:08:13
issue a press release telling the
00:08:16
country
00:08:16
that the army had found the wreckage of
00:08:18
a flying saucer I never questioned it in
00:08:23
1947 when a colonel told the first
00:08:26
lieutenant to do something the first
00:08:28
lieutenant did that there's a little bit
00:08:30
of difference who he didn't have any
00:08:32
democracy from back in 1947 in the
00:08:35
military establishment there the press
00:08:39
release read in part the many rumors
00:08:42
regarding the flying disc became a
00:08:44
reality yesterday when the intelligence
00:08:46
office of the five-o ninth Bomb Squadron
00:08:49
was fortunate enough to gain possession
00:08:52
of a disc through the cooperation of a
00:08:55
local rancher the press release was
00:08:58
immediately picked up by newspapers
00:08:59
across the country the story created an
00:09:03
uproar
00:09:06
that same day an engineer for the Soil
00:09:09
Conservation Service made another
00:09:11
discovery
00:09:12
Barney Barnett of Socorro New Mexico
00:09:15
died in 1969 he may have come across the
00:09:20
first positive proof that there is other
00:09:22
life in our universe
00:09:27
Barney but just a real straightforward
00:09:30
just what you would call a real straight
00:09:32
guy he would wouldn't tell you one story
00:09:35
out of color or nothing that's why I was
00:09:37
really surprised when he related this
00:09:39
information to me about the crash
00:09:41
assessment he told me that he come under
00:09:45
this spaceship it was during the daytime
00:09:47
was an oval shape and it had crashed and
00:09:52
it had broken open
00:09:54
there was beings laying about four
00:09:56
beings laying on the ground not in the
00:09:58
not in the spaceship they were scattered
00:10:00
not too far from the object he did
00:10:04
describe that the heads were larger than
00:10:05
the bodies by proportioned and they had
00:10:09
some type of clothing on that looked a
00:10:11
little bit different not exactly like
00:10:13
our spacesuits or that sort of thing
00:10:15
Barney told Verne that he reached the
00:10:17
crash site at about the same time as
00:10:19
some archaeology students who had seen
00:10:21
the wreckage from their nearby dick
00:10:28
the military also discovered the second
00:10:31
crash site after an aerial search but
00:10:34
they arrived too late to secure the area
00:10:41
Barney Barnett and the students had a
00:10:44
clear and detailed look at the craft and
00:10:47
its occupants when the army showed up
00:10:51
they immediately escorted these people
00:10:53
from the scene and then at that time
00:10:58
they give them a warning not to relate
00:11:00
any information on it from that time on
00:11:03
Barney never mentioned it to anybody
00:11:05
until the time that he told me about the
00:11:07
thing the Barnett story has only been
00:11:11
sold secondhand but many believe there
00:11:13
is too much supporting evidence to
00:11:15
completely dismiss it he first told me I
00:11:21
was sort of flabbergasted I didn't know
00:11:22
what to say but I believed it because of
00:11:24
his integrity
00:11:28
he would never concoct any story that's
00:11:32
why I believed it to be true
00:11:33
[Music]
00:11:45
next we'll examine the possibility that
00:11:48
the military not only removed the
00:11:51
spacecraft but that they purposely kept
00:11:53
the news of this astounding discovery
00:11:56
from the American people
00:12:04
on July 8th 1947 newspapers across
00:12:09
America reported that a UFO crashed in
00:12:13
New Mexico that same day debris and
00:12:16
perhaps alien bodies were flown to an
00:12:19
Air Force Base in Fort Worth Texas and
00:12:22
that my friends is when the official
00:12:24
story began to change
00:12:26
[Music]
00:12:30
Brigadier General Roger Ramey was a
00:12:33
high-ranking Army Air Force official at
00:12:36
Fort Worth within hours Rama's Office
00:12:39
issued a new press release stating that
00:12:42
the material recovered in New Mexico was
00:12:45
not a UFO but in reality the wreckage of
00:12:49
a US Army weather balloon
00:12:53
my dad said obviously it was a cover-up
00:12:56
story it was not a weather poem he was a
00:12:59
little disturbed about that but he had
00:13:01
his own security classification to
00:13:03
protect he could not really go public
00:13:05
with hey this is not a weather balloon
00:13:07
so he had to keep that to himself the
00:13:12
UFO incident was still very much live
00:13:14
for Mac Brazel at the time a rumors
00:13:18
surfaced that Mac was briefly detained
00:13:19
at the Roswell base
00:13:25
later a man named Floyd Proctor saw
00:13:28
Brazel but Mack seems scared to talk
00:13:31
with its friend Floyd and a neighbor was
00:13:35
in Roseville and saw macron surrounded
00:13:39
by some of the airforce people and they
00:13:42
walked right by them and Mike wouldn't
00:13:45
speak to them and my he wouldn't talk
00:13:50
about it after he'd come back home he
00:13:53
did say that he ever found something
00:13:55
else he wouldn't report by the time Mack
00:14:00
was released all traces of the roswell
00:14:03
crash had been removed from his ranch
00:14:05
that debris had been taken to Wright
00:14:08
Field in Dayton Ohio everything went to
00:14:13
right field that's where the air
00:14:15
technical Intelligence Center was that
00:14:17
was where they could make the studies
00:14:18
subsequent to that we think that the
00:14:20
material has been sent elsewhere we
00:14:22
think one of the bodies has gone to
00:14:24
Langley CIA headquarters we think
00:14:26
another has gone to MacDill which is an
00:14:28
Air Force Base in Florida where they
00:14:30
have an aerospace medicine facility we
00:14:32
don't know where other stuff is gone we
00:14:34
think some of it is still left at Wright
00:14:36
Field there was no real proof to dispute
00:14:40
the Army's statement that the wreckage
00:14:42
was a weather balloon and then more than
00:14:45
30 years later UFO researchers obtained
00:14:49
a document containing what they believed
00:14:51
was new evidence
00:14:53
the mj-12 memo had been mailed
00:14:57
anonymously to a UFO researcher
00:15:01
operational majestic 12 for mj-12 as
00:15:04
it's called was a group of 12 people
00:15:06
apparently established by the President
00:15:08
to deal with the wreckage from Roswell
00:15:11
and the whole problem that that created
00:15:14
how do these things work where did they
00:15:16
come from how can we get more
00:15:17
information the contents of the report
00:15:20
stunned researchers in part it read on 7
00:15:24
july 1947 a secret operation was begun
00:15:28
to assure the recovery of the wreckage
00:15:30
for small human-like beings had
00:15:33
apparently ejected from the craft all
00:15:35
four were dead effective cover story
00:15:38
that the object had been a misguided
00:15:41
weather balloon the government has
00:15:44
refused to comment on the mj-12 memo or
00:15:47
its origin but if this document and
00:15:53
other accounts from 1947 are true then
00:15:56
our government has evidence of alien
00:15:59
life
00:16:03
other than Barney Barnett only one other
00:16:06
man has ever admitted to having seen the
00:16:09
aliens my husband
00:16:13
Oliver Henderson otherwise known as
00:16:15
Pappy in the Air Force he was entrusted
00:16:17
with many of this country's top secrets
00:16:20
and they were safe with him he never
00:16:23
told anything that he wasn't supposed to
00:16:26
Captain Pappy Henderson piloted the
00:16:29
plane that took the first pieces of the
00:16:31
wreckage out of Roswell in 1981 two
00:16:36
years before he died he told his wife
00:16:39
that the Roswell incident really
00:16:41
happened my husband told me the bodies
00:16:46
were small smaller than human bodies the
00:16:51
heads were larger and the eyes were
00:16:53
rather sunken and a little slanted
00:16:59
clothing was of material unlike anything
00:17:02
he'd seen before they were estranged
00:17:06
they were not not of this earth for more
00:17:15
than a half a century the military has
00:17:18
stuck by its story of a Down weather
00:17:20
balloon but the people who actually saw
00:17:24
and touched wreckage don't buy it they
00:17:28
believe that the mysterious craft and
00:17:30
creatures found nearby were nothing less
00:17:33
than a visitation from another world
00:17:43
next a timid woman who is afraid to
00:17:46
leave her house finally steps out and
00:17:49
then vanishes
00:18:07
it was a warm summer day in Pleasant
00:18:10
Hill California jewel Kaler drives his
00:18:14
wife Dottie to their local BART station
00:18:18
she purchases a ticket a simple task
00:18:21
performed each day by millions of
00:18:24
commuters but for daddy Kaler it's a
00:18:26
test of courage
00:18:29
Dottie suffers from agoraphobia and
00:18:33
irrational and overwhelming fear of
00:18:35
being in public places no one knows for
00:18:44
sure if she actually boarded the train
00:18:49
because since that day there has been no
00:18:52
trace of body came after the first few
00:18:58
days I thought that she had left
00:19:00
temporarily to well simply make things
00:19:06
inconvenient for me I think that Dottie
00:19:09
could have disappeared to get even with
00:19:13
her husband who had disappeared on her
00:19:15
for half of their married life
00:19:19
at first friends thought daddy left to
00:19:23
escape an unhappy marriage and start a
00:19:25
new life in another city but months and
00:19:28
now years have gone by with no word for
00:19:31
today
00:19:33
people who knew daddy wonder if she's
00:19:36
even alive dotty had what doctors have
00:19:43
called agoraphobia he would stay inside
00:19:46
most of the time she couldn't even apply
00:19:48
for a job much less hold on down it was
00:19:53
a real problem
00:19:55
[Music]
00:19:56
daddy's condition strained her marriage
00:19:59
to jewel to the point of violence she
00:20:03
told me that they got in an argument it
00:20:05
escalated to the point where he finally
00:20:07
hit her with a board or something and
00:20:09
she received a wound in her head and
00:20:12
that she did grab some scissors and said
00:20:15
you keep away from me and protected
00:20:17
herself and she was standing over top of
00:20:20
me with those scissors Jewell says that
00:20:23
daddy started the fight swearing at me
00:20:26
and saying I'll kill you you son of AB
00:20:29
County you and I grabbed her little
00:20:34
typing stand and hit her with him
00:20:42
without ever telling jewel daddy joined
00:20:44
a support group called women in
00:20:46
transition as time went on I would
00:20:51
notice she's adding a little more color
00:20:52
to her outfits she cut her hair in a new
00:20:55
style which was very scary thing for her
00:20:58
It was as if a new Dottie were emerging
00:21:01
in addition daddy secretly rented a
00:21:05
post-office box to receive her mail
00:21:07
without Jewel knowing about it she had a
00:21:15
secret existence that I knew nothing
00:21:16
about and she wanted it that way I only
00:21:22
began to become aware of it no near the
00:21:25
time that she disappeared I wasn't even
00:21:26
aware of it I was just suspicious
00:21:30
eventually Dottie and jewel Kaler agreed
00:21:32
to divorced one month before daddy
00:21:37
disappeared
00:21:38
jewel accepted a job transfer to Salt
00:21:41
Lake City
00:21:44
dottie had said in the event that i got
00:21:47
transferred that she was not interested
00:21:49
in going with me so I wasn't expecting
00:21:54
her to go with me and wouldn't even have
00:21:57
wanted her to I guess according to jewel
00:22:01
just a few days before he was to leave
00:22:04
for Salt Lake City
00:22:05
he drove daddy to the BART station
00:22:09
I took her down to the BART station she
00:22:14
had with her a little overnight bag and
00:22:19
I dropped her off
00:22:22
and she walked around the corner of the
00:22:25
station and disappeared jewel is also
00:22:29
sure that Daddy had her purse as well as
00:22:31
her overnight bag when she walked into
00:22:34
the station but no one knows if she ever
00:22:37
boarded the train the next day jewel
00:22:41
came home early from work
00:22:43
in the park parking lot he was surprised
00:22:46
to find Donnie's Volkswagen park next to
00:22:48
his car so I walked over and looked
00:22:53
inside and then I noticed her purse and
00:22:58
that was very very strange she told me
00:23:04
how important it was to her to have her
00:23:06
purse with her all the time
00:23:08
that's one of the things that made me
00:23:10
feel so terribly upset when I realized
00:23:12
that she had not taken her purse with
00:23:15
her over the next four days jewel left
00:23:18
notes and daddy's car asking her to
00:23:21
contact him he wrote of his love and
00:23:25
pleaded with her to come home I spoke to
00:23:29
jewel and jewel told me that he hadn't
00:23:32
seen her for three or four days and that
00:23:35
her car was was there her purse was
00:23:37
there and he didn't know where she was
00:23:40
jool waited five days to file a
00:23:43
missing-persons report with a BART
00:23:45
police they in turn notified the Concord
00:23:49
Police Department
00:23:53
two weeks later jewel moved to Salt Lake
00:23:56
City where he still lives and works it
00:24:01
was hell living with Dottie
00:24:06
it was hell having her disappear the way
00:24:11
that you did and yet since I've gotten
00:24:17
in and gotten settled and into a new job
00:24:21
that whole problem is behind me
00:24:24
[Music]
00:24:27
things are really pretty good the
00:24:34
Concord Police Department is still
00:24:35
investigating daddy's disappearance
00:24:37
treating the case as a homicide police
00:24:41
do not consider Jewell Taylor a suspect
00:24:44
but a person of interest if you have any

00:25:19
San Diego California Jeffery dikmen's
00:25:24
life seemed to be on track
00:25:26
he had become a marine captain and was
00:25:29
stationed near his hometown he even
00:25:32
bought a house with a fellow officer but
00:25:35
only four months after his promotion
00:25:37
Jeffery was transferred to Puerto Rico
00:25:41
according to his friends Jeffrey was
00:25:44
unhappy about the transfer but by
00:25:46
Christmas he was finally settling in and
00:25:49
dating lucy garcia an accountant at the
00:25:53
local pace was a very quiet person
00:25:57
we were so serious and I like that of
00:26:01
him he said he was gonna take two weeks
00:26:05
off to go back home and fix some things
00:26:10
after Christmas Jeffery flew home he was
00:26:14
scheduled to return back to Puerto Rico
00:26:16
on Super Bowl Sunday
00:26:19
that day a neighbor saw Jeffery at his
00:26:22
house several hours later neighbors
00:26:29
heard what they thought was a car
00:26:30
backfiring
00:26:35
later that night when Geoffrey's
00:26:37
roommate arrived home with his
00:26:39
girlfriend they were surprised to see
00:26:41
that Geoffrey's car was still there he
00:26:45
should have left for Puerto Rico hours
00:26:47
before when the roommate returned home
00:26:53
with his girlfriend the lights were on
00:26:55
the garage door was open apparently so
00:26:59
this caused some concerns some suspicion
00:27:01
as mr. Digman was not supposed to be
00:27:02
there the roommate and the girlfriend
00:27:10
went across the street to get some
00:27:11
neighbors they found Geoffrey Digman
00:27:28
dead with a single bullet wound to his
00:27:31
right temple an autopsy revealed that
00:27:36
Geoffrey's blood-alcohol level was three
00:27:38
times the legal limit traces of
00:27:42
gunpowder were found on his right hand
00:27:45
evidence that he had fired a pistol
00:27:48
Jeffrey's death was ruled a suicide
00:27:55
I had no time ever believed that he
00:27:58
committed suicide I never believed that
00:28:01
from when I first got the phone call -
00:28:04
when I went down that night I've always
00:28:07
believed that he was murdered and that's
00:28:10
what the evidence shows
00:28:14
the Naval Investigative Service backup
00:28:17
the coroner's ruling of suicide bill and
00:28:20
Donna
00:28:21
Dignan were unconvinced they began their
00:28:23
own investigation and they would soon
00:28:26
find compelling evidence that their son
00:28:28
might have been murdered in Jeffrey's
00:28:32
childhood bedroom the dig man's
00:28:34
carefully duplicated the scene of his
00:28:36
death in this room we've recreated a
00:28:40
mock-up of the crime scene with a help
00:28:43
of private investigator bill Digman
00:28:45
demonstrated why he believes that his
00:28:47
son could not have possibly killed
00:28:49
himself but the first thing I had to do
00:28:52
was determine the trajectory of the
00:28:55
bullet which I did and this is the
00:28:59
trajectory of the bullet on that
00:29:01
occasion this was the position that my
00:29:05
son was found in and for him to have
00:29:08
been able to have shot through the hand
00:29:10
he had to be shot somewhere along the
00:29:13
bullet path here which means that I have
00:29:16
to get lined up with it and to do that I
00:29:18
have to get in this contorted position
00:29:21
the other thing was that he was all
00:29:23
left-handed if he'd held the gun in his
00:29:27
hand and in this contorted position over
00:29:30
on the side of the bed as soon as he was
00:29:32
shot he would have fallen to the floor
00:29:36
Jeffrey's parents were puzzled by a
00:29:38
trail of blood that ran down Jeffrey's
00:29:41
left cheek from his ear this indicated
00:29:44
that he was in an upright position for
00:29:46
at least seven seconds from after the
00:29:49
gunshot
00:29:50
above Jeffrey's head and the turn back
00:29:53
sheet was an unexplained smear of blood
00:29:57
his parents hired Steve Levy an
00:30:00
independent forensic expert to review
00:30:03
the case I don't feel that Jeffrey
00:30:07
killed himself I think there was some
00:30:09
kind of a struggle that took place and
00:30:10
he was shot during that struggle almost
00:30:14
a year after Jeffrey's death his parents
00:30:17
requested a second autopsy two
00:30:22
contusions were found that had not
00:30:24
previously been reported this discovery
00:30:29
may support the theory that Jeffrey had
00:30:32
been involved in a struggle before his
00:30:34
death but the medical examiner concluded
00:30:37
these injuries were insignificant there
00:30:40
was no medical evidence to support a
00:30:42
conclusion of homicide the dig men's
00:30:46
remained convinced that their son was
00:30:48
murdered they felt his death was somehow
00:30:52
related to his work with the San Diego
00:30:54
marine drug testing unit before he'd
00:30:59
been transferred to Puerto Rico
00:31:01
Jeffrey served as the drug Youmans
00:31:03
commanding officer people were dealing
00:31:06
drugs people were testing positive he
00:31:09
would write his reports documenting what
00:31:12
the results of his investigation were
00:31:14
those people weren't being disciplined
00:31:16
they were not being discharged
00:31:18
even very upset over that during the
00:31:22
time Jeffrey ran the drug unit
00:31:24
his mother discovered a safe hidden in
00:31:26
his room
00:31:27
[Music]
00:31:29
I found some military documents in his
00:31:33
safe and I asked him what were those
00:31:35
documents and that was when he told me
00:31:38
that he was saving those tests from drug
00:31:41
abuse test when we came back to move
00:31:46
Jeffrey's things we wanted to empty the
00:31:48
desk to make it lighter and we opened
00:31:51
the hinged door that the safe was
00:31:54
usually behind and the hinged door came
00:31:57
off in our hands and the hinges were not
00:31:59
connected and the safe was not there
00:32:05
there is another puzzling aspect to this
00:32:09
case when Lucy helped the Marines pack
00:32:11
Jeffrey's belongings in Puerto Rico
00:32:13
she found a small green diary of
00:32:16
Jeffrey's when she gave it to the
00:32:18
Marines all its pages were intact but
00:32:24
when they returned it some pages were
00:32:26
missing
00:32:27
eventually we unpack things and looking
00:32:30
with a little green book that Lucy was
00:32:32
telling us about and when we found it
00:32:37
what we found was that the pages were
00:32:40
cut out of it
00:32:44
we want to know why our son is dead we
00:32:48
want to know why we're not gonna give up
00:32:50
until we find out why the Armed Forces
00:32:54
Institute of Pathology reviewed both
00:32:57
autopsy reports they change the cause of
00:33:00
death to undetermined but both the Naval
00:33:06
Investigative Service and the Riverside
00:33:07
County Sheriff's Department stand by the
00:33:10
ruling of suicide if you have any

00:33:31
the arsonist who burn down the Church of
00:33:33
NFL superstar Reggie White
00:33:45
Medford Oregon in an earlier program we
00:33:51
told you about a fugitive by the name of
00:33:54
Stephen Cox Cox formed an investment
00:33:59
company that offered clients a 25%
00:34:02
return on their money many people in
00:34:06
Medford invested their life savings
00:34:09
totaling three point five million
00:34:12
dollars when the business began to fail
00:34:15
Stephen Cox vanished and so did over
00:34:19
$200,000 in valuables update minutes
00:34:29
after the story aired six viewers called
00:34:31
to report that Cox was living in Boise
00:34:34
Idaho under the assumed name Robert
00:34:37
Bradley Davis it turned out that just
00:34:40
hours before the broadcast Cox
00:34:42
disappeared again telling his wife he
00:34:45
was going to Hawaii but Cox was actually
00:34:50
hiding out in a motel 25 miles southeast
00:34:53
of Las Vegas Nevada he was using the
00:34:57
name John Strauss he was not the normal
00:35:01
guest he stayed in his room all day long
00:35:04
he would only leave at night very seldom
00:35:08
did he leave in the daytime and we
00:35:10
noticed that the license plates were not
00:35:12
the same as he had put down on his
00:35:14
registration card and that made us a
00:35:17
little suspicious but yet nothing we
00:35:19
could put a finger on two weeks later
00:35:22
Edna Reed found the key clue while
00:35:24
collecting trash from Cox's room
00:35:28
and when I went to empty the trash out
00:35:30
of that bend
00:35:31
I found the crumpled up letter and like
00:35:35
any curious female I read the letter I
00:35:37
saw the part that said something about
00:35:40
the unsolved mystery show being a
00:35:42
bombshell I showed the letter to my
00:35:45
husband and between the two of us we
00:35:47
decided it was time definitely to call
00:35:48
the Rangers and tell them about the
00:35:50
guest
00:35:51
Blake meet Park Rangers immediately ran
00:35:54
a computer check the car belonged to
00:35:57
someone other than John Strauss
00:36:02
the next morning Park Rangers spotted
00:36:04
Cox's car and they pulled him over in
00:36:06
the parking lot of the Gold Strike
00:36:08
casino after we made the traffic stop he
00:36:13
produced identification a driver's
00:36:15
license issued to a Robert Davis and we
00:36:18
checked that name and date of birth
00:36:20
through the NCIC computer we found that
00:36:22
it was an alias used by one Steven Cox
00:36:24
and that there was a warrant for mr. Cox
00:36:27
at that point we placed him under arrest
00:36:31
when they searched his car the rangers
00:36:34
uncovered a small fortune when we looked
00:36:37
in the passenger compartment of the
00:36:39
vehicle and in a trunk we found
00:36:40
suitcases and other luggage tech bags
00:36:44
filled with jewelry rings necklaces
00:36:47
collector type baseball cards some gold
00:36:50
coins silver coins
00:36:53
Stephen Cox was sentenced to 20 years in
00:36:56
prison for racketeering and fraud
00:37:01
he was paroled after serving two years
00:37:07
when a church in Knoxville Tennessee was
00:37:10
destroyed by arson it became a major
00:37:13
story it was linked to a series of eight
00:37:16
crimes its pastor was none other than
00:37:19
football of legend Reggie White
00:37:23
an NFL Hall of Fame defensive end Reggie
00:37:28
White was credited with sacking more
00:37:31
quarterbacks than any other player in
00:37:33
history but this ferocious hitter had a
00:37:40
gentle side about 40 years to get him
00:37:45
ready to face fair Reggie White was an
00:37:48
ordained minister in football's
00:37:51
offseason he could be found saving souls
00:37:53
in his hometown
00:37:58
Knoxville Tennessee Reggie White and two
00:38:02
longtime friends found that the inner
00:38:04
city church by merging two congregations
00:38:07
into one their goal was to create a
00:38:11
church that would serve poor people of
00:38:13
all races their motto
00:38:16
together we can make a change is very
00:38:20
important in this very vital I believe
00:38:22
that our church is doing things in our
00:38:25
communities that no other churches are
00:38:27
doing like school the black churches
00:38:29
white goes to white churches we wanted
00:38:31
to try to have a church to everybody
00:38:33
would feel weapon no matter what the
00:38:34
color was it was a noble undertaking
00:38:39
that unexpectedly became the target of
00:38:42
arsonists
00:38:43
I believe in my heart that it was an
00:38:49
attack from the devil himself devil
00:38:52
inspired people that he used to fireball
00:38:56
my church agents from the FBI and the
00:39:00
Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms
00:39:02
began to investigate an immediate visit
00:39:08
to this location indicated to us that it
00:39:10
was a very deliberate criminal act the
00:39:12
sanctuary portion of the building had
00:39:14
been totally destroyed they found
00:39:16
multiple Molotov cocktails
00:39:20
they found that both floors of this
00:39:22
structure had been saturated with
00:39:24
gasoline and kerosene and they found
00:39:29
gasoline cans and kerosene cans
00:39:31
scattered throughout this portion of the
00:39:33
building
00:39:38
agents also found racial epithets
00:39:41
scrawled on the walls leaving little
00:39:43
doubt that the arson was a hate crime
00:39:46
[Music]
00:39:50
Reggie White was appalled and then
00:39:53
outraged when he learned that his church
00:39:55
had not been the first to be torched the
00:39:58
only reason that you hear about my
00:40:00
church is because of me but there have
00:40:02
been 22 other churches there's been fire
00:40:05
bar that's a problem and this problem
00:40:08
needs to be rectified at final count at
00:40:13
least 24 black churches were hit by
00:40:16
arsonist the attacks occurred throughout
00:40:20
the south I don't believe it was anyone
00:40:23
that would be a what you would call a
00:40:25
professional based on the way the field
00:40:29
was in the building the way to set up
00:40:30
for in the building I think the thing is
00:40:32
without if a little is good a whole lots
00:40:34
better and that's what they tried today
00:40:37
he's put enough fuel in there to do the
00:40:39
job the inner city church in Knoxville
00:40:42
did not have enough fire insurance to
00:40:45
cover all the damages but with hard work
00:40:47
from the parishioners and donations from
00:40:49
the community both black and white
00:40:51
they hope to rebuild
00:40:57
[Music]
00:41:02
but the problem is because racism has
00:41:06
alienated itself so that you can't touch
00:41:09
it
00:41:09
what if Reggie White and his fellow
00:41:11
pastors kept the spirit of their
00:41:13
congregations strong with the church
00:41:15
services held at a local school
00:41:18
auditorium that's why we shootin each
00:41:20
other today this just makes me more
00:41:24
determined and I know that all the ways
00:41:26
you defeat the devil is that you have to
00:41:28
do it as a group and that's why I will
00:41:31
call whites and blacks to come again and
00:41:33
find how to work together because what
00:41:35
kills the enemies tactics is if a bunch
00:41:39
of people of all ethnic backgrounds 2:11
00:41:41
each other
00:41:44
sadly Reggie white died of sudden heart
00:41:47
failure eight years after the fire this
00:41:51
church has yet to be rebuilt the arson
00:41:55
investigation remains open if you have
