Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 3, Episode 13 - Full Episode

May 22, 2019 / 49:52

This episode covers the mysterious case of Navy medic Mark Dennis, UFO sightings in Canada, and the crimes of Ricardo Caputo. It features the Dennis family's search for answers about Mark's fate after a helicopter crash in Vietnam, Dorothy Eyes' UFO experiences, and Caputo's alleged murders.

In 1966, Navy medic Mark Dennis was presumed dead after a helicopter crash in Vietnam. His family later believed he might have survived when they saw a photograph of an unidentified POW that resembled him. Jerry Dennis, Mark's brother, pursued the truth, uncovering inconsistencies in the Navy's reports and evidence suggesting Mark may have been alive after the crash.

Meanwhile, Dorothy Eyes from Vancouver, British Columbia, documented numerous UFO sightings over 16 years. She captured intriguing photographs of lights in the sky, claiming they communicated with her. Despite skepticism, her experiences gained her international attention.

The episode also highlights Ricardo Caputo, a man suspected of murdering several women, including his girlfriend Natalie Brown. After being declared incompetent to stand trial, he manipulated his way into a less restrictive psychiatric facility and continued his violent behavior.

Finally, an update reveals that a suspected serial child molester was captured shortly after the episode aired, thanks to viewer tips.

TL;DR

The episode investigates Mark Dennis' mysterious fate, UFO sightings by Dorothy Eyes, and the crimes of Ricardo Caputo.

00:02:54
mark Dennis was a deeply religious young
00:02:56
man with a strong sense of compassion
00:02:59
according to his family he had
00:03:01
volunteered for service in Vietnam so
00:03:03
that a marriage soldier with a family
00:03:05
would not have to go once and get none
00:03:11
mark was attached to the maligne 2nd
00:03:13
battalion company Eve stationed in Dong
00:03:15
Ha next to the demilitarized in combat
00:03:19
slang the sector was hot we all knew he
00:03:26
was going into combat but it was really
00:03:29
not a name by his mind that it was as
00:03:31
bad as it became a few months later so
00:03:34
we all felt you know it was dangerous
00:03:37
but it was his place to go he had
00:03:40
volunteered
00:03:42
July 15th 1966 mark and 15 other men
00:03:47
were aboard a Chinook helicopter
00:03:49
bringing assistance to a battalion
00:03:51
hemmed in by the North Vietnamese Army
00:03:53
the helicopter right into heavy enemy
00:03:55
gunfire this is an actual photograph of
00:03:59
Mark's helicopter shortly after it was
00:04:01
hit
00:04:02
a helicopter crashed and exploded in the
00:04:04
midst of an infantry firefight according
00:04:07
to Navy records only three men survived
00:04:09
a pilot copilot and the gun 13 men had
00:04:14
perished in the crash when I came down
00:04:20
the street I saw the Navy vehicle first
00:04:22
thing to hit my mind is his market kill
00:04:24
I pulled up to the house and I heard my
00:04:28
sister yell Marcus day
00:04:35
it was just a total shock then the wait
00:04:40
for the casket it just stays and then
00:04:43
turned into weeks the whole thing was
00:04:47
was really a trauma that that bridge
00:04:51
difficult today to even talk about mark
00:04:55
Dennis was buried on August 9th 1966 due
00:04:59
to the condition of the body the Navy
00:05:01
suggested that the family not view the
00:05:03
remains they complied the first four
00:05:08
years was rough and a Vietnam War went
00:05:10
on and we just tried to shut it out of
00:05:13
our lives until 1970 on November 30th
00:05:21
1970 nose week magazine published this
00:05:23
photograph of an unknown prisoner of war
00:05:26
when the Dennis family saw the
00:05:28
photograph they thought it looked just
00:05:29
like mark suddenly faced with a
00:05:32
possibility that mark might be alive the
00:05:35
immediately contacted the Navy naval
00:05:39
authorities requested additional
00:05:40
photographs of mark to see if they could
00:05:42
make a positive identification six weeks
00:05:45
passed finally the Navy concluded the
00:05:49
man in the photograph was not marked
00:05:51
dentist but rather a previously
00:05:52
documented prisoner the Navy continued
00:05:56
to maintain mark had been killed in
00:05:58
action
00:06:00
unconvinced Jerry Dennis requested the
00:06:02
Navy forward Marc's death certificate a
00:06:05
death certificate got a disturbing
00:06:07
revelation
00:06:08
it appeared that every man killed in the
00:06:10
crash had been positively identified
00:06:12
except mark Dennis the Navy stated that
00:06:18
they were definitely able to match 12
00:06:20
bodies found in the wreckage with 12 men
00:06:22
from Mark's unit the thirteenth body was
00:06:24
burned beyond recognition they
00:06:27
apparently assumed it was marked by a
00:06:28
process of elimination Jerry Dennis
00:06:31
still believing the man pictured in
00:06:33
Newsweek might be his brother now became
00:06:35
convinced that market survived several
00:06:38
weeks after the photograph appeared
00:06:40
Jerry received further evidence that his
00:06:42
brother might not have died in the crash
00:06:46
in 1971
00:06:48
an article about Jerry Dennis's efforts
00:06:50
to find out what happened to his brother
00:06:52
appeared in local newspaper the next day
00:06:55
Jerry was visited by a navy dental
00:06:57
technician named Steve Wilcox Steve
00:07:01
Wilcox had been mark's best friend and
00:07:03
bootcamp
00:07:04
six months after mark was reported
00:07:06
killed Steve met another man who had
00:07:08
served with mark in Vietnam everybody
00:07:12
that came to the hospital had to come
00:07:13
through my office they had to deliver
00:07:15
their dental records to me so I knew
00:07:16
where everybody came from and I knew
00:07:18
there there was just one medic who had
00:07:20
come from Nam I saw him later and we had
00:07:24
a chance to talk we worked together a
00:07:26
lot in the field as medics he's one of
00:07:28
the best medics in the group too
00:07:29
I mentioned that I had a friend it was
00:07:31
killed in Nam and mentioned there was
00:07:33
Mark Dennis and he was in Mark's unit
00:07:36
hey were you there when that chopper
00:07:38
went down no I wasn't actually there
00:07:42
look then he started to share some
00:07:46
information with me that was coming off
00:07:48
guard it really surprised me
00:07:49
I don't think mark died that day but
00:07:52
they sent the body home I mean the
00:07:54
family buried mark well I was in the
00:07:56
first recovery cool right first of all
00:07:59
he said that mark was not supposed to
00:08:00
have been on that hillock on mark and
00:08:02
secondly nobody really in the unit
00:08:04
believed that mark was did there was no
00:08:06
evidence at the crash site that he was
00:08:08
on the helicopter when it crashed
00:08:10
[Music]
00:08:12
the chaotic aftermath of the crash I'm
00:08:15
ready for call that run equipment
00:08:16
belonging to Navy medics were found in
00:08:19
the debris nor where mark Dennis's dog
00:08:25
most alarming he reported there were not
00:08:28
13 bodies recovered as claimed by the
00:08:31
Navy
00:08:40
I was very frustrated and I could not
00:08:42
remember his name there are a lot of
00:08:47
things that that were unsettling with
00:08:49
him I was more concerned with mark
00:08:52
naturally so that's what I remember the
00:08:54
most but I do remember that he was he
00:08:59
indicated things were happening there
00:09:00
that he he didn't understand and
00:09:02
bothered him based on Steve Wilcox his
00:09:07
story the Dennis family chose to ignore
00:09:09
the Navy's recommendation not to view
00:09:11
the body they decided to have the
00:09:13
remains exhumed because the body had
00:09:23
been burned beyond recognition military
00:09:25
procedure called for the uniform to be
00:09:27
placed on top the remains were
00:09:29
underneath wrapped in a plastic bag
00:09:31
covered by a navy blanket
00:09:34
jerry found dog tags pinned to the
00:09:36
blanket the tag seemed brand new and
00:09:39
still had sharp edges I immediately
00:09:43
grabbed the dog tag to read it a
00:09:45
neighbor and the dog tag something to my
00:09:48
thumb actually drew blood and I
00:09:50
immediately realized these dog dates
00:09:52
were never worn or they would have cut
00:09:53
your chest to ribbons
00:09:56
Jerry also noticed curious burn marks on
00:09:59
the tags they were not from here a
00:10:02
copper crashed I was into the arson
00:10:04
field I knew what the temperature is
00:10:06
reached and that helicopter is it burned
00:10:08
and melted down these dog tags were not
00:10:10
many recovered Jerry Dennis once again
00:10:13
contacted the Navy their initial
00:10:16
response was that the tags must have
00:10:17
been thrown from the helicopter and
00:10:19
burned at a lower temperature later they
00:10:21
arrived at a different conclusion the ID
00:10:25
tags that are recovered from a crash
00:10:28
site would have been brought to the
00:10:30
mortuary with the remains but since it
00:10:33
was not mentioned on the death
00:10:34
certificate that ID tags were part of
00:10:37
the identification process I had to
00:10:39
assume that new ID tags were made at the
00:10:42
army mortuary in Saigon that was
00:10:44
standard policy at that time that is
00:10:48
normal it is not normal to make up a dog
00:10:50
tag and burn it to make it simulate that
00:10:52
it was in a
00:10:53
crash Jerry had lab technicians examine
00:10:56
residue from the tags they concluded the
00:11:00
tags had been charred in a low-grade
00:11:01
fire under a controlled flame
00:11:04
a forensic anthropologist determined at
00:11:08
the height of the dead man's
00:11:09
approximately five feet seven which
00:11:11
corresponded with a Navy's estimate
00:11:13
however in 1963 mark Dennis was measured
00:11:17
at five feet nine and a half further his
00:11:20
family claims that when he left for
00:11:22
Vietnam three years later he had grown
00:11:24
to six feet tall
00:11:27
Jerry also ordered tests on scrapings
00:11:30
taken from the remains the tests
00:11:33
revealed traces of lead another
00:11:35
inconsistency the body was not blown up
00:11:39
in a Chinook helicopter because a
00:11:42
Chinook helicopter uses jp4 jp-5 non
00:11:45
literacy this body had been burned with
00:11:47
regular gasoline what he failed to
00:11:50
consider as possible other contaminants
00:11:53
of lead in that incident were military
00:11:56
radio batteries onboard the aircraft
00:11:58
ammunition paint from the aircraft that
00:12:01
kind of thing the standard reference
00:12:03
used by the FBI states that they're also
00:12:06
my dude presence of lead and occurs
00:12:09
naturally in human bone we weren't
00:12:11
talking about bone Morrow we're talking
00:12:13
about the residues the smoke on the
00:12:16
surface of the burn areas the bone the
00:12:19
flesh the skull itself so they were
00:12:23
comparing eggs and oranges in November
00:12:26
1971 Gerry officially requested a change
00:12:29
in marks status from killed in action to
00:12:32
missing an action the Navy refused I was
00:12:36
given a choice either accepting that
00:12:38
body you know or if we refused to accept
00:12:41
it
00:12:42
the Navy was going to bury it in
00:12:43
Arlington Cemetery with Marsh headstone
00:12:45
oh and I decided to have no way in hell
00:12:48
they're gonna do that two months later
00:12:50
the Dennis family reburied the body in
00:12:53
Miamisburg
00:12:53
Jerry placed a ribbon upon the headstone
00:12:56
it read the memory of one known only to
00:13:00
God
00:13:00
[Music]
00:13:03
March 1973 the war in Vietnam was over
00:13:07
the first prisoners of war began coming
00:13:10
home the Dennis family prayed that mark
00:13:13
would be among them he was not the
00:13:16
arrival of the Vietnamese boat people in
00:13:18
the late 1970s brought renewed hope
00:13:20
stories of American GIs still being held
00:13:23
captive in Vietnam for most of us a
00:13:28
Vietnam War begun to fade by 1984 Jerry
00:13:32
Dennis and the families of other men
00:13:34
whose fate was still unknown the war
00:13:36
raged on Jerry decided to renew his
00:13:39
efforts and petitioned his congressman
00:13:40
to investigate the circumstances
00:13:42
surrounding Mark's death
00:13:45
[Music]
00:13:48
in 1981 pressure from Jerry's
00:13:51
congressman forced the Navy into
00:13:52
interviewing captain Gary Lucas the
00:13:54
helicopter gunner who survived the crash
00:13:56
in a signed affidavit Lucas stated the
00:14:00
two men had jumped from the helicopter
00:14:02
though he assumed they were killed the
00:14:06
man who got out of this alive said men
00:14:08
jumped out of the aircraft in enemy
00:14:10
territory prior to the crash at least
00:14:13
two he saw jump did he see it and the
00:14:17
pilot said the smoke was so bad after
00:14:19
the aircraft was hit he could not see to
00:14:21
fly the helicopter or did he see two
00:14:23
people move towards the rear of the
00:14:25
aircraft to try and get away from the
00:14:26
fire the fact remains that the all the
00:14:29
remains of the holes that's perished on
00:14:31
that aircraft were recovered
00:14:33
when I first became involved in this it
00:14:36
was a personal issue it was a brother
00:14:38
Mark Dennis the kid they got left behind
00:14:41
by the US government and it was a very
00:14:44
personal thing everybody involved in
00:14:47
this issue the family members start out
00:14:48
that way but you don't remain that way
00:14:51
very long over the next four years Jerry
00:14:55
Dennis became increasingly active in
00:14:57
national powa and m.i.a organizations he
00:15:01
made numerous trips to Washington to
00:15:03
plead his case then in December of 1986
00:15:06
Jerry got another piece of compelling
00:15:09
evidence and Marquette and not died on
00:15:11
the crash
00:15:14
this is a bracelet of Jerry's brother
00:15:16
who the POWs the gentleman to my left
00:15:18
really became absorbed in listening and
00:15:21
I knew he was interested excuse me yes
00:15:24
sir
00:15:25
I didn't want to interrupt but I haven't
00:15:27
overhear a part of your conversation my
00:15:30
name is John King John I'm Jerry this is
00:15:32
Gerald I heard you talking about the
00:15:34
POWs well I was in the Air Force I
00:15:36
happen to be a powa firm 66 to 69 I was
00:15:42
moved around a lot four different camps
00:15:44
and the last camp I was in it was a
00:15:46
gentleman by the name of Dennis I said
00:15:49
well what was his first name I don't
00:15:51
know we all went by nicknames I said
00:15:53
what was his nickname when he told me
00:15:56
his nickname was preacher I get cold
00:15:58
chills
00:15:59
mark was very close to the church he
00:16:02
talked about becoming a missionary
00:16:03
before he went into service while in
00:16:06
this service he had just written home in
00:16:07
letters that his unit was separated and
00:16:09
he was the acting chaplet for the group
00:16:12
he was in he was proud of that here's a
00:16:16
man telling us all these years later
00:16:22
excuse me but that was distinct
00:16:28
then we pulled out marks picture
00:16:30
[Music]
00:16:33
yeah yeah that's him you're sure I'm
00:16:37
positive that's him
00:16:42
it's what I'd been singing along could
00:16:45
be probably was that he lived he
00:16:48
definitely lived through the crash in 66
00:16:49
the odds he was still alive especially
00:16:52
if he was once captured as a medic he
00:16:54
was useful to these people as a medic I
00:16:58
basically feel I had become pretty good
00:17:00
friends with mr. Jerry Dennis over the
00:17:02
years since I've been working with him
00:17:04
and I've made every effort on behalf of
00:17:07
the Navy to try and convince him that we
00:17:09
have a positive identification of his
00:17:11
brother Mark's remains I get the
00:17:15
impression from mr. Dennis that he still
00:17:18
does not believe they are his brothers
00:17:20
remains or for some reason doesn't want
00:17:22
to believe it but I in my own heart feel
00:17:25
that for sure we had the remains of Mark
00:17:28
Dennis no matter what we come up with I
00:17:32
swear if I'm marched Mark Dennis in to
00:17:35
the United States Navy headquarters
00:17:36
tomorrow they'd find some excuse to
00:17:39
discredit his identification it doesn't
00:17:41
matter what you present they aren't
00:17:43
going to change did Mark Dennis die on
00:17:47
the helicopter crash did he survive only
00:17:50
to be taken prisoner by the North
00:17:51
Vietnamese Jerry Dennis may never know
00:17:55
who is buried in his brother's grave but
00:17:58
if it isn't Mark Dennis and another
00:18:00
family has never been able to put their
00:18:02
son to rest
00:18:04
whether Mark is alive today I don't know
00:18:09
what condition he would be in where he
00:18:11
would be I don't know but in my opinion
00:18:14
no one else knows either except some
00:18:17
Vietnamese who hold the keys but the
00:18:20
point is Mark Dennis has a right a
00:18:22
constitutional right to not be listed
00:18:25
dead by the stroke of a pen he has a
00:18:28
right to be accounted for he has a right
00:18:30
to be demanded and that's never been
00:18:33
done by our government for Mark Dennis
00:18:39
after the story originally aired
00:18:41
additional details emerge which may shed
00:18:43
new light on the mystery of Mark Dennis
00:18:45
we are contacted by the Department of
00:18:48
the Army which sought to clarify some of
00:18:50
the more controversial issues presented
00:18:52
in our broadcast as we reported Jerry
00:18:56
Dennis first became convinced that his
00:18:58
brother might still be alive when
00:19:00
Newsweek magazine published this
00:19:02
photograph of an unidentified prisoner
00:19:04
of war
00:19:05
Jerry felt that it bore strong
00:19:07
resemblance to mark six months later the
00:19:11
Dennis family was told by the Navy that
00:19:13
the man had been positively identified
00:19:15
as Paul Galante a u.s. navy commander
00:19:18
shot down over North Vietnam in 1966 and
00:19:21
released from captivity in 1973
00:19:24
nevertheless Jerry Dennis continued to
00:19:27
press his case against the military I
00:19:31
was in the Air Force I happen to be
00:19:33
appeared of me myself from 66 to 69 16
00:19:36
years later in 1986
00:19:38
Jerry met a man named John King King
00:19:41
presented himself as a former POWs had
00:19:44
managed to escape he claimed to have met
00:19:47
mark Dennis while both were in captivity
00:19:50
that's him
00:19:51
it is now known that the name John King
00:19:53
is not officially listed as a powa in
00:19:56
any branch of the military perhaps the
00:20:01
most controversial aspect of the case
00:20:03
concerns the remains exhumed for Mark
00:20:05
Dennis's grave Jerry Dennis did not
00:20:08
believe x-rays taken of those bones
00:20:10
matched x-rays taken of his brother at
00:20:13
the time of his enlistment with a
00:20:17
cooperation of the US Department of the
00:20:19
army we contacted dr. John Fitzpatrick
00:20:21
an independent forensic radiologist to
00:20:24
positively identify the body dr.
00:20:27
Fitzpatrick examined the blow-up of a
00:20:29
known x-ray of mark Dennis and an x-ray
00:20:31
of the remains buried and Mark Dennis's
00:20:33
grave when he compared three specific
00:20:38
points from the x-rays he concluded that
00:20:40
the bones had exactly the same
00:20:42
configuration I compared the x-rays
00:20:47
taken on the three vertebrae
00:20:50
that were excavated from the site in
00:20:52
Vietnam with the x-ray of mark Dennis
00:20:56
the three vertebrae are identical
00:21:01
there's enough unique about everybody no
00:21:04
matter what we look at that no two
00:21:05
people are alike and therefore the
00:21:07
vertebrae are those of mark Dennis and
00:21:11
this is a one on a percent
00:21:12
identification
00:21:17
after we receive dr. Fitzpatrick's
00:21:19
analysis we contact a Gerry Dennis for
00:21:21
his comments in spite of the new
00:21:24
forensic findings Gerry still believes
00:21:26
that his brother did not die when the
00:21:28
Navy said he did the Department of the
00:21:30
army considers a case of Mark Dennis
00:21:32
closed next our viewers help capture
00:21:39
Kenneth Robert Stafford one of the FBI's
00:21:41
10 most wanted criminals recently the
00:21:53
director of the FBI
00:21:54
William sessions made a special appeal
00:21:56
on unsolved mysteries to announce the
00:21:58
latest addition to the FBI's ten most
00:22:00
wanted list in 1964
00:22:05
Kenneth Robert Stanton was convicted of
00:22:07
child molestation and diagnosis a
00:22:09
criminal sexual psychopath
00:22:10
he was later declared fit to reenter
00:22:13
society and was set free
00:22:17
in 1989 statin was identified in Jackson
00:22:20
Mississippi by a twelve-year-old girl he
00:22:22
allegedly attempted to molest according
00:22:25
to the girl
00:22:26
Stanton gained entry into her home by
00:22:28
posing as a policeman hi is your mother
00:22:32
home no well I'm officer Tom Coles and
00:22:36
with the local PD have a high IQ and
00:22:39
he's very intelligent he's able to gain
00:22:41
her confidence to get inside the house
00:22:43
I'll be gone okay all right once he's
00:22:49
inside and he's determined that the
00:22:53
children or child is alone he the
00:22:57
blindfolds and frequently quite often he
00:23:00
uses eyedrops
00:23:01
and a thermometer possibly for a
00:23:04
distraction it's at that time then that
00:23:06
he continues on and assaults the
00:23:08
children according to the
00:23:11
twelve-year-old girl step the flare when
00:23:14
she began screaming after the Jackson
00:23:17
Mississippi assault
00:23:19
there were identifications of stem at
00:23:22
Columbus Mississippi that's lost
00:23:24
Tuscaloosa Alabama Leesburg Georgia
00:23:27
Douglasville Georgia and Warner Robins
00:23:30
Georgia after reviewing a number of
00:23:33
these cases and looking at Stan's
00:23:35
history from the early 1960s we were
00:23:37
able to conclude that he apparently was
00:23:40
a delightful on child molester and
00:23:42
probably could be described as a serial
00:23:44
child molester
00:23:47
update kenneth robert Stanton has been
00:23:50
captured within minutes of our broadcast
00:23:53
several viewers called our tell us of a
00:23:55
report that Stanton was living in a
00:23:56
trailer park in moraine Ohio with his
00:23:58
wife he had been married just a few
00:24:00
weeks earlier local police and FBI
00:24:03
agents arrived to staff this trailer
00:24:05
only to learn that he himself had seen
00:24:07
our broadcast and fled Stanton's wife
00:24:10
and neighbors were stunned stay in the
00:24:17
yard just in case he come back no one
00:24:20
said if I can run around the streets at
00:24:22
all does anything like I should be put
00:24:25
away five days later Stephanie's
00:24:28
identified Rock Hill South Carolina
00:24:29
after he allegedly attempted to molest a
00:24:32
nine-year-old girl based on seeing the
00:24:36
segments on the program coupled with a
00:24:38
police report we suspected as a strong
00:24:41
possibility but Stanton was in Rock Hill
00:24:43
or somewhere in this area and we
00:24:47
proceeded on an assumption that he was
00:24:48
possibly staying at a local motel two
00:24:52
days later
00:24:53
FBI agents spotted Stanton's car in the
00:24:55
parking lot of this motel after
00:24:58
identifying the vehicle we establish the
00:25:01
surveillance of the motel with FBI
00:25:04
agents in York County Sheriff's
00:25:05
Department detectives incredibly a check
00:25:09
with the motel office revealed as
00:25:10
Stanton had registered under his own
00:25:12
name he had indicated to the clerk
00:25:16
previously that he wanted to stay an
00:25:18
additional week but he also wanted to
00:25:20
move to the main building the clerk at
00:25:24
our direction called his room told him
00:25:28
the new room was ready and he could move
00:25:30
when stanton emerged from his room we
00:25:33
arrested him
00:25:34
we asked then his name he said you know
00:25:37
who I am and he indicated he was not a
00:25:40
threat to us that he was only a threat
00:25:42
to himself he did indicate that the
00:25:46
following day was his birthday
00:25:53
[Music]
00:25:55
when we return the police are hunting
00:25:59
for a suspect who they believe is
00:26:00
murdered at least five women July 31st
00:26:14
1971 Nassau County New York 11:00 p.m. a
00:26:20
20 year old Argentine man named Ricardo
00:26:23
Caputo made a late-night call to the
00:26:25
police he told police to go to the home
00:26:38
of his girlfriend's parents her name was
00:26:41
Natalie Brown Caputo had been dating
00:26:45
Natalie for over a year and had told
00:26:47
authorities that he intended to marry
00:26:49
her I responded to the scene on Middle
00:26:53
Neck Road it was a yes small college
00:26:57
type Cape Cod house I went in the front
00:26:59
door and Emilio my left I saw a kitchen
00:27:01
and in the kitchen was the body you have
00:27:03
Miss Brown she had been stabbed
00:27:09
repeatedly the room was covered with
00:27:11
blood it was really a vicious assault
00:27:15
was the worst I have a scene in Winnie's
00:27:17
G nice couple a lot of homicides in my
00:27:20
life during the time that Natalie and
00:27:21
Ricardo were seeing each other I never
00:27:24
saw any signs of volatile behavior on
00:27:29
his part both my father and mother
00:27:33
seemed to like him they got along with
00:27:35
him well they both thought he was a nice
00:27:36
boy badly Browns friends and family
00:27:40
describe her fiance as amiable and
00:27:42
attractive winning personality in the
00:27:46
case of Ricardo Caputo appearances were
00:27:48
more than deceiving they became a lethal
00:27:50
weapon police believe it since 1971
00:27:53
Caputo has employed his charms to kill
00:27:55
again and again and again after Caputo
00:28:01
was taken into custody for Natalie
00:28:03
Browns murder authorities learned that
00:28:05
before arriving in the United States in
00:28:07
1970 he had been treated for mental
00:28:09
illness in an Argentine Hospital the
00:28:14
psychiatric review ruled that Caputo was
00:28:17
incompetent to stand trial so he was
00:28:19
remanded to the Matawan State Hospital
00:28:21
in upstate New York
00:28:23
marijuana's a maximum-security
00:28:24
institution and it was there that caputo
00:28:27
would meet a 26 year old psychologist
00:28:29
named Judith Becker
00:28:32
[Music]
00:28:35
very well thank you how are you there's
00:28:40
something I want to talk to you about
00:28:42
the other doctors and I were discussing
00:28:44
a project which would involve taking you
00:28:47
and a few other patients outside to grow
00:28:49
a garden I think I believe it was a
00:28:51
relationship a psychologist and a
00:28:57
patient she felt that her patients were
00:29:00
also her friends she wanted them to
00:29:03
trust her and I think she felt they had
00:29:06
to trust her in order to for her to be
00:29:10
able to help them becquer was charmed by
00:29:15
Caputo and over the next two years he
00:29:17
worked overtime to gain her trust
00:29:19
apparently he succeeded in speaking to
00:29:25
other inmates of Matawan state hospital
00:29:27
several of them stated that Ricardo
00:29:29
Caputo had been bragging that he was
00:29:31
going to use Judith Becker to gain his
00:29:34
freedom from Matawan state hospital in
00:29:38
1973 with Judith Becker's assistance
00:29:41
Ricardo Caputo managed to get
00:29:42
transferred out of marijuana to a
00:29:44
Manhattan psychiatric hospital it had
00:29:47
been two years since Natalie Brown had
00:29:49
been stabbed
00:29:52
this hospital is much less restrictive
00:29:55
than level allowed patients to leave the
00:29:57
facility during the day this new freedom
00:30:01
allowed Judith and Caputo to spend more
00:30:03
time together outside the hospital walls
00:30:05
today there is still a debate on just
00:30:08
how intimate they became from their
00:30:12
their relationship became romantic from
00:30:17
time to time he would leave the grounds
00:30:19
and go up to her apartment in Yonkers
00:30:22
Judy and Ricardo did not have a romantic
00:30:27
relationship
00:30:28
she never described it that way and I
00:30:33
believe she knew enough about her
00:30:35
profession and her patience to not have
00:30:38
allowed that to happen I think she felt
00:30:41
that he needed whatever help she might
00:30:45
be able to give him Judith even took
00:30:49
Caputo home to meet her family when we
00:30:53
met Ricardo she introduced him as a
00:30:56
fellow who worked with her at Matawan
00:30:58
she continued the relationship as a as a
00:31:02
friend and as a psychologist and as
00:31:05
somebody he could turn to and I don't
00:31:09
believe that she knew she was in as much
00:31:12
danger as she ultimately was
00:31:17
October 21st 1974 Judith had failed to
00:31:21
meet her parents as planned for a family
00:31:23
boating trip concerned they went to her
00:31:25
apartment did you dressed as they
00:31:29
located the super of the apartment
00:31:30
building and by the use of a passkey
00:31:33
allowed them to enter the apartment when
00:31:41
they entered the apartment where she
00:31:44
lived there was dinner for two on the
00:31:47
coffee table in the living room
00:31:50
and when they walked into the bedroom
00:31:52
they found their daughter lying on her
00:31:56
back in bed wearing only a half slip she
00:32:04
had been brutally beaten about the head
00:32:06
and strangled with one of her stockings
00:32:10
police believe that Caputo took Judas
00:32:12
car checkbook and some of her clothing
00:32:15
then he disappeared
00:32:18
San Francisco six months later
00:32:21
Ricardo Caputo had met another trusting
00:32:23
woman Barbara Taylor was a local book
00:32:28
editor these pictures were taken by
00:32:30
Barbara and Caputo on a romantic getaway
00:32:32
to Yosemite but on March 30th 1975
00:32:37
Barbara was discovered beaten to death
00:32:39
in her apartment Caputo's fingerprints
00:32:42
were found at the scene of the crime by
00:32:45
the time Barbara's body was discovered
00:32:47
Ricardo Caputo was nowhere to be found
00:32:51
five days later El Paso Texas
00:32:54
the search for Ricardo Caputo took a
00:32:56
dramatic turn a land calling and sulfur
00:32:59
kado Diaz was delivered into the hands
00:33:01
of US immigration by Mexican authorities
00:33:04
he was turned over the custody of US
00:33:07
officials and he was incarcerated at the
00:33:10
alien detention facility which is
00:33:12
located here in El Paso Texas it was
00:33:14
actually lockup there where he is being
00:33:16
detained no charges had been filed again
00:33:19
I guess ten of just an administrative
00:33:20
thing but first Diaz attracted little
00:33:24
attention until he was fingerprinted
00:33:27
he knew them but it would not take long
00:33:29
for his real identity to be uncovered
00:33:32
ricardo dia was in reality
00:33:35
Ricardo Caputo April 7th 1975 Bhutto and
00:33:44
three other detainees took the guard
00:33:46
hostage picked up makeshift weapons in
00:33:48
the kitchen
00:33:50
[Music]
00:33:57
the men then fled the compound and
00:33:59
crossed the border into Mexico in a
00:34:01
stolen car all the men were recaptured
00:34:06
with the exception of Caputo his
00:34:09
companions told police Caputo was headed
00:34:12
to Mexico City
00:34:15
there he moved in with a young 21 year
00:34:17
old college student by the name of Laura
00:34:20
Marie Gomez two years later
00:34:24
23 year old Laura Marie Gomez was found
00:34:26
dead in her Mexico City apartment miss
00:34:30
Gomez was found brutally beaten stomped
00:34:34
to death she had been tortured prior to
00:34:37
her death Laura Gomez was two and a half
00:34:40
months pregnant police believe the
00:34:42
killer and the father the same man
00:34:45
Ricardo Caputo handsome charming
00:34:49
intelligent has a violent temper which
00:34:53
usually results in homicidal outburst
00:34:56
says he's done this all over the United
00:34:59
States and in Mexico we have to consider
00:35:01
him may a serial killer incredibly
00:35:05
police believe ricardo caputo was killed
00:35:08
again on August 2nd 1983 60-year old
00:35:13
Jackie Bernard a prominent author and
00:35:15
social activist was found murdered her
00:35:18
throat crushed West Side Manhattan
00:35:20
apartment
00:35:22
On January 22nd 1985 a private
00:35:26
investigator hired by Jackie's fancy
00:35:28
received an anonymous home instead of
00:35:31
fiying Jackie's killer as Ricardo Caputo
00:35:34
the caller also said that computer
00:35:37
boasted about killing several other
00:35:40
women and also some men Jackie burnouts
00:35:45
residence our superintendent told Gordon
00:35:47
McEwen I was positive that he had seen
00:35:50
Caputo on the premises attempting to
00:35:52
gain entry into Jacqueline's apartment
00:35:54
the superintendent was absolutely
00:35:57
positive of his identification of Caputo
00:36:00
he even added that the hairline of
00:36:03
Caputo hair had receded somewhat he also
00:36:06
informed me that Caputo spoke with a
00:36:08
South American accent he was very
00:36:12
positive Caputo is a chameleon
00:36:17
he can change his identity he can change
00:36:20
his looks and he can kill and have no
00:36:23
remorse for having killed he's a good
00:36:25
con artist he's a smooth talker he could
00:36:30
function and probably just about any
00:36:31
situation he set his mind to go into I'd
00:36:34
hate to think that Ricardo will have the
00:36:36
opportunity to do it to another lady or
00:36:39
anybody else for that matter and I think
00:36:44
he'd be better off dead
00:36:56

00:37:29
UFO sightings can usually be explained
00:37:31
away as airplane lights
00:37:33
weather balloons military maneuvers even
00:37:36
mass hysteria sightings sometimes gain
00:37:39
credibility when they were supported by
00:37:40
photographs which cannot be written off
00:37:42
as obvious hoaxes all of these
00:37:44
photographs and thousands like them have
00:37:46
been taken over the last 16 years in
00:37:48
Canada they baffle even the harshest
00:37:51
skeptic and raised two elegantly simple
00:37:53
questions how and why Vancouver British
00:38:01
Columbia the Pacific coast of Canada for
00:38:05
35 years this city has reported an
00:38:07
inordinate number of UFO sightings the
00:38:10
most frequent and well-documented of the
00:38:12
sightings have all been attributed to
00:38:14
one woman Dorothy eyes at a homemaker
00:38:17
and mother of four Dorothy's first
00:38:20
sighting occurred 16 years ago on
00:38:22
November 9th 1974 she was 52 years old
00:38:30
I was in the kitchen fixing myself a cup
00:38:33
of tea and I had a sensation that
00:38:36
something was watching me very strong
00:38:42
feeling so I went over to the window and
00:38:45
here was this enormous object sitting up
00:38:48
in the sky it looked like an enormous
00:38:51
diamond it was just flashing with going
00:38:53
around and around and around it was so
00:38:58
beautiful to look at that I thought I
00:39:00
was really lifted up it was absolutely a
00:39:03
wonderful feeling I wasn't afraid at all
00:39:06
you know I was I felt really privileged
00:39:09
to be able to see something like that at
00:39:13
that time Dorothy and her family lived
00:39:15
in Richmond a modest suburb of Vancouver
00:39:18
they considered themselves average
00:39:20
working-class people Dorothy's husband
00:39:23
and children took her UFO sightings
00:39:25
lightly almost as a joke their
00:39:27
skepticism motivated Dorothy to prove
00:39:30
which she had seen was not simply a star
00:39:32
or an airplane I say I must find some
00:39:38
way of communicating with this thing up
00:39:40
there so I picked up a flashlight and
00:39:43
said all right whatever I do with this
00:39:45
flashlight will you please imitate me
00:39:49
so I flashed the light three times to
00:39:52
the left and this object went three
00:39:54
times to the left
00:39:56
then I flushed it three times to the
00:39:58
right and the object went three times to
00:40:00
the right then I went three times
00:40:02
upwards II went three times upwards
00:40:04
three times downwards or three times
00:40:05
down wit was doing everything and
00:40:07
zigzagging and it went zigzag so I said
00:40:09
I'm not imagining this I said this is
00:40:10
really happening
00:40:11
so it's intelligent Dorothy was amazed
00:40:17
that the light seemed to be trying to
00:40:18
communicate with him so she attempted to
00:40:21
capture them on film
00:40:23
the results would be startling
00:40:30
what I saw in the sky was just round
00:40:32
objects of light rum balls of light but
00:40:37
what was on a film you'll see the balls
00:40:39
of light but after a couple of frames
00:40:42
there will be an enormous blast of light
00:40:45
this is actual footage from Dorothy
00:40:48
super 8 millimeter home movies
00:40:54
[Music]
00:40:58
on her home viewer Dorothea inched the
00:41:01
film back and forth until she isolated a
00:41:03
single bright frame but had it first
00:41:06
appeared to be a simple flash of light
00:41:07
was actually a maze of colored streaks
00:41:12
oddly like did not spill over onto
00:41:15
adjacent frames
00:41:16
I noticed that while I'm filming these
00:41:21
objects there suddenly stopped and then
00:41:23
notice one object like shooting out a
00:41:27
little beam at the other object and that
00:41:29
object was shooting out or being back at
00:41:31
it and so I guess it must be messages
00:41:34
are summarily passing back and forth on
00:41:36
these beams of light and then when I get
00:41:38
it developed how finally strange one
00:41:41
frame shots on it Dorothy had the single
00:41:45
frames of film blown up into photographs
00:41:47
bright kinetic beams careened in all
00:41:49
directions
00:41:50
she also blew up frames of the
00:41:53
mysterious balls of light these
00:41:55
photographs began to show more and more
00:41:57
curious detail sometimes their beam a
00:42:01
light down at me
00:42:02
they'll just beam this enormous light
00:42:04
down at me you know and I'll be all lit
00:42:07
up with this light I used to ask them to
00:42:10
come closer and closer cuz I wanted
00:42:12
better shots and they did you know like
00:42:14
come closer and closer
00:42:18
I don't think she's lying about what
00:42:21
she's doing I feel that she's quite
00:42:23
sincere on the other hand I am not able
00:42:27
to assess her her photographs
00:42:30
professionally because that's not part
00:42:32
of my expertise but her personality
00:42:36
makeup would make me believe that she's
00:42:39
not making things up like most UFO
00:42:43
sightings Dorothy's experiences and her
00:42:45
photographs seem to defy conventional
00:42:47
logic she says she used three different
00:42:50
cameras each one yielded similar results
00:42:55
we asked a photography expert to
00:42:57
evaluate Dorothy's film I have seen
00:43:01
several similar examples of photography
00:43:03
like this light sources in the sky with
00:43:06
dark backgrounds are quite easy to
00:43:09
manipulate but these are more
00:43:11
extraordinary in the sense that they
00:43:13
were done with a 8-millimeter camera a
00:43:15
motion picture camera rather than a
00:43:17
still camera and they have so many
00:43:19
different types of effects there's
00:43:22
images that I can't explain at all
00:43:25
explain how the lights got into the
00:43:28
individual frames
00:43:31
I can suggest ways that they could have
00:43:33
been put in intentionally but no ways
00:43:36
that they could accidentally have been
00:43:38
placed into the film I believe that
00:43:41
these images were produced by natural
00:43:44
occurring phenomenon in the night sky
00:43:46
and not by extraterrestrial beings or
00:43:50
unexplained objects
00:43:53
despite endless skepticism from the
00:43:55
scientific community
00:43:57
Dorothee eyes that has become an
00:43:59
internationally known figure in the
00:44:00
world of UFOs as dorothy's fame spread
00:44:04
people often came to visit her in
00:44:06
Vancouver one of them was Gerry Makai of
00:44:09
planning and marketing consultant he had
00:44:11
read an article about Dorothea and felt
00:44:13
strongly that he had to meet her I was
00:44:17
interested enough and moved enough by
00:44:18
that article that I really did just want
00:44:20
to find out more from my own interesting
00:44:22
I think it's healthy to be skeptical
00:44:24
because I was myself they didn't have
00:44:29
any previous experience with the subject
00:44:31
matter at all I didn't even realize up
00:44:33
until that point that I had as much of
00:44:34
an interest with it as it's turned out
00:44:36
that I do these are like daytime type
00:44:40
shots or they look like it is it or is
00:44:42
it just the type of lightning or
00:44:43
whatever when I was told to try and get
00:44:45
some pictures in the daytime as well and
00:44:47
that's why I got leaves I was listening
00:44:49
very intently to what she was saying at
00:44:51
which time I noticed that I was hearing
00:44:54
some kind of audible sensing thing that
00:44:57
was happening only in my right ear so
00:44:59
they know it's solid and it's not just
00:45:01
so excuse me Dorothy I don't mean to
00:45:02
interrupt you but I'm getting a strange
00:45:04
sensation in my ear here
00:45:06
losing what you're saying you can hear
00:45:09
that and I looked at her and I said yes
00:45:11
I can
00:45:11
what is it and this brilliant beam of
00:45:16
smile went from ear to ear on her face
00:45:19
and I remember the look that she gave me
00:45:21
and she said there here
00:45:27
Gerry Makai was the first person to say
00:45:30
he actually heard the same thing that
00:45:31
Dorothy heard
00:45:33
[Music]
00:45:36
I don't think any more than 15 or 20
00:45:38
seconds went by and she said do you see
00:45:41
it their sanctuary no I don't see
00:45:44
anything where you're looking I'm
00:45:46
looking straight ahead to cross the
00:45:48
sector's Bowl she goes no no look over
00:45:50
here to the left where I am to my
00:45:54
complete shock and amazement what
00:45:56
appeared to be sitting right out in
00:45:58
front of the window just to our left was
00:46:01
a hard metallic object I remember the
00:46:04
feeling was so intense it was like that
00:46:05
was standing in a vacuum and all my hair
00:46:07
was standing on it and as soon as it
00:46:11
disappeared Dorothy let out a giggle
00:46:13
that was like there you go what do you
00:46:18
think of that
00:46:19
Jerry commissioned an artist to draw
00:46:22
what he and Dorothy had seen he says he
00:46:24
was completely overwhelmed he did not
00:46:27
occur to him to try to photograph the
00:46:29
object
00:46:34
Dorothy has accumulated more than 25
00:46:36
hours of film and has had blow ups made
00:46:38
of 3,000 frames her enthusiasm remains
00:46:43
unabated and she continues to film
00:46:45
hoping that she can one day decipher the
00:46:47
meaning if any of the lights I feel
00:46:52
there is some sort of message and there
00:46:53
for us
00:46:54
they're trying to tell us something from
00:46:56
these pictures it seems like they're
00:46:59
coming closer and closer all the time
00:47:01
compared to the first pictures I used to
00:47:04
take and each picture now that I'm
00:47:07
getting is far more vivid it varies all
00:47:11
the time
00:47:16
my mission is to just keep filming I
00:47:21
guess and receiving these pictures for
00:47:23
as long as I am able to and hope that
00:47:27
one day someone somewhere will be able
00:47:30
to understand what it's all about

when unsolved mysteries visited Dorothea
00:47:43
Isaac's home in Vancouver she told us
00:47:45
the lights were there and she filmed
00:47:46
them with her super 8 millimeter camera
00:47:48
we could not see the lights but our
00:47:50
cameraman attempted to film them anyway
00:47:52
he also asked Dorothy to operate his
00:47:55
camera the film from Dorothy's 8
00:47:57
millimeter camera showed the usual
00:47:59
brilliant light patterns when we
00:48:01
developed our film we did find one tiny
00:48:03
unidentifiable light in the sky but it
00:48:06
exhibited none of the characteristic
00:48:08
seen in Dorothy's photographs next week
00:48:19
on unsolved mysteries in 1986 the body
00:48:23
of 28 year old Debbie Wolfe was found in
