Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 3, Episode 8

March 09, 2017 / 42:52

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murder of musician Mia Zapata, the legend of Billy the Kid, child abuse cases, and psychic dreams.

In Seattle, the episode recounts the tragic story of Mia Zapata, lead singer of the punk band The Gits, who was murdered in 1993. Mia's body was discovered after a night out, and despite initial theories about her death, it took years for justice to be served when DNA evidence linked her murder to Hey Zeus Mesquita, who was convicted in 2003.

The episode then shifts to the story of Brushy Bill Roberts, who claimed to be Billy the Kid, asserting that he survived the shootout with Sheriff Pat Garrett. Despite his insistence and some circumstantial evidence, historians largely dismiss his claims.

Next, the episode highlights the case of Ashley Berman, a young girl who suffered mysterious injuries while under the care of her nanny, Rosa Hernandez. After a series of hospital visits and investigations, it was revealed that Ashley was a victim of abuse, leading to charges against Hernandez.

Finally, the episode discusses psychic dreams, featuring individuals who believe their dreams have predicted future events, including a woman who dreamed of her former love's death shortly before it occurred.

TL;DR

Mia Zapata's murder, Billy the Kid's legend, child abuse, and psychic dreams are explored in this episode.

00:02:21
she was someone who had something to say
00:02:24
she was very compassionate and
00:02:26
big-hearted person and she brought that
00:02:29
into into the bed but early one summer
00:02:35
morning
00:02:36
Mia's incredible voice was silenced
00:02:40
she left her friend's apartment around
00:02:42
2:00 in the morning
00:02:45
an hour later her body was found a
00:02:49
couple of miles away
00:02:51
she was lying face-up in an almost
00:02:53
christ-like pose
00:02:55
Mia Zapata had been raped beaten and
00:02:58
then strangled to death no one can
00:03:03
understand why this popular young singer
00:03:05
had been attacked and murdered was her
00:03:08
killer an obsessed fan a jealous enemy
00:03:11
or perhaps just a complete stranger you
00:03:15
might say that Mia was born to be a star
00:03:18
she grew up in Kentucky the daughter of
00:03:21
two television executives it was at
00:03:24
Antioch College where she met the other
00:03:26
three members of her band after five
00:03:30
years of performing together the gates
00:03:32
were attracting the attention of major
00:03:34
record companies and planning their
00:03:36
first US tour I don't think I can ever
00:03:41
remember my daughter looking so
00:03:46
satisfied so content so at ease with
00:03:50
herself
00:03:54
the night Mia was murdered began at one
00:03:57
of her favorite bars where she met
00:03:59
friends around 10 p.m. she only stayed
00:04:03
there for a while then left the bar and
00:04:05
walked to a local rehearsal studio one
00:04:08
block away
00:04:14
Mia then visited a friend who lived in
00:04:17
the same building as the studio at
00:04:19
around 2:00 a.m. she left her friend's
00:04:21
apartment saying she planned to take a
00:04:23
cab home she could have gone anywhere
00:04:26
from there she could have gone out the
00:04:29
front entrance gone down to the corner
00:04:31
and hailed a cab as she told her friend
00:04:32
she was going to do Mia knew many of the
00:04:40
local cab drivers because she didn't
00:04:43
have a driver's license it was first
00:04:46
thought that Mia had been murdered by a
00:04:48
cab driver
00:04:51
looking good Mia did not have difficulty
00:04:55
expressing her opinion and sometimes
00:04:59
this got her into trouble and other
00:05:01
people liked it she could have said
00:05:03
something to a cab driver that she knew
00:05:05
that just made that person angry that
00:05:07
night none of the drivers said they had
00:05:12
picked up me at that night and none of
00:05:14
her friends who would also have been
00:05:16
taking cabs reported seeing her then
00:05:20
there's Theory number two she also could
00:05:24
have gone into the opposite direction
00:05:25
she lived about five blocks away she
00:05:28
could have gone down eleventh Pasteur
00:05:30
reservoir and something could have
00:05:34
occurred there in fact something did
00:05:38
occur but no one knows if it had
00:05:40
anything to do with Mia's death
00:05:45
one of the earliest clues that the
00:05:46
police received was from a man who had
00:05:48
heard a scream a terrifying scream that
00:05:50
night he was so distraught by it that he
00:05:52
actually rush to see what was going on
00:05:54
but he saw nothing
00:05:55
he lived however very close to the
00:05:58
reservoir on 11th where Mia could have
00:06:00
gone
00:06:03
and finally Theory number three perhaps
00:06:07
me had never left the building where she
00:06:09
was last seen the day after her murder
00:06:13
one of Mia's friends stopped by the
00:06:14
rehearsal studio and she found Mia's
00:06:17
personal microphone which she rarely let
00:06:20
out of her sight we don't know whether
00:06:23
she left it there after the practice at
00:06:25
night or whether she went back to the
00:06:27
studio after visiting her friend
00:06:29
something happened there and this was
00:06:31
simply left Mia's body was found about
00:06:34
two miles from the studio and about
00:06:37
three miles from the street where the
00:06:39
man heard the screams police thoroughly
00:06:44
searched the area but found nothing this
00:06:48
particular investigation has been
00:06:49
difficult because we're faced with a
00:06:53
situation where we don't know where the
00:06:55
actual crime scene was where the murder
00:06:58
took place
00:06:59
we obviously only know where we found me
00:07:02
at which we don't believe is the same
00:07:05
[Music]
00:07:08
without a crime scene or witnesses the
00:07:11
investigation grew cold
00:07:14
however the pain of Mia's death did not
00:07:17
people really were mad they were shocked
00:07:20
and people wanted justice and people
00:07:23
wanted to to know what had happened
00:07:25
the remaining gifts decided to take
00:07:28
action
00:07:29
they hired private investigator Leigh
00:07:31
Hearon and staged benefit concerts to
00:07:34
raise money for the investigation
00:07:36
the response was overwhelming Seattle's
00:07:40
leading musicians got involved including
00:07:43
Nirvana and rocker Joan Jett I want more
00:07:50
than anything for them to be able to
00:07:52
find out what happened and so there
00:07:54
could be some resolution for everybody
00:07:56
because everyone's been working real
00:07:58
hard trying to find this person who did
00:08:01
this
00:08:06
I'm gonna use it
00:08:09
[Applause]
00:08:10
I just remembered the look on her face
00:08:12
of contentment and of accomplishment
00:08:14
that last day when we finish the tour
00:08:17
and how happy she was and how she was
00:08:19
smiling with a look of real sense of
00:08:22
accomplishment like we had a future
00:08:27
playing music without Mia is very
00:08:31
difficult the chemistry that we shared
00:08:33
as a band having that gone forever is a
00:08:36
hard reality to face every day I
00:08:40
remember her as one of the warmest most
00:08:44
caring ultra talented people I've ever
00:08:47
met in my life

next brushy Bill Roberts of heiko Texas
00:09:37
claimed that Billy the Kid was not
00:09:39
killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett brushy
00:09:42
says that he was Billy the Kid
00:09:53
billy the kid' easily the most notorious
00:09:56
desperado of the Wild West
00:09:58
he killed 21 men one for every year of
00:10:03
his young life history tells us that
00:10:06
Billy the Kid was born William Bonney in
00:10:08
New York City in 1859 later in New
00:10:12
Mexico he fought against rich ranchers
00:10:15
in the Lincoln County cattle war and
00:10:17
that he was sentenced to death for
00:10:19
killing Sheriff
00:10:20
William Brady according to most sources
00:10:27
Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett was
00:10:30
eager to collect the $500 bounty on
00:10:33
Billy the Kid in July of 1881 he tracked
00:10:38
Billy down in Fort Sumner New Mexico and
00:10:41
killed him history also tells us that
00:10:48
Billy was buried the following day in a
00:10:50
simple grave but now some people say
00:10:54
that history is wrong that Billy wasn't
00:10:59
the man in the grave this whole legend
00:11:02
of ability kid
00:11:03
90% of what we've heard and been taught
00:11:06
as students and skills is not true
00:11:13
sixty-eight years after Billy's death a
00:11:15
man from Texas named brushy Bill Roberts
00:11:18
claimed that he was Billy the Kid there
00:11:23
is no doubt whatever in my mind but what
00:11:26
pressure bill and Billy kid was one and
00:11:30
the same person
00:11:32
historian Donald lavash disagrees
00:11:36
there is absolutely no comparison
00:11:39
whatsoever between brushy Bill Roberts
00:11:42
known as Olie Partridge Roberts and
00:11:46
William Bonney alias Billy the Kid most
00:11:50
historians completely dismiss brushy
00:11:53
bill story but there is evidence the
00:11:55
support has claimed evidence that's hard
00:11:58
to ignore it all started in 1948 when an
00:12:03
attorney named William Morrison was told
00:12:06
that Billy the Kid might not have died
00:12:08
in 1881 a client told him that he had
00:12:13
actually fought belly the kid in the
00:12:15
Lincoln County Wars and that the kid was
00:12:19
still alive and asked my father was
00:12:22
talking to the man he referred to
00:12:24
Lincoln County my father said oh he said
00:12:27
that's where Billy the Kid he said he
00:12:30
was killed up there at Pete Maxwell's
00:12:31
house and the man said oh no no he
00:12:34
wasn't killed he's still around Morrison
00:12:39
was so intrigued that he decided to do
00:12:42
some of his own investigating he
00:12:44
traveled throughout the West talking to
00:12:47
other old-timers about Billy the Kid and
00:12:49
he discovered that many thought that
00:12:52
Billy was still alive they said that he
00:12:56
was going by the name of brushy Bill
00:12:58
Roberts
00:13:01
William Morrison decided to visit Texas
00:13:04
and to talk to brushy bill in person
00:13:08
[Music]
00:13:12
Dress your bill Here I am
00:13:19
we must keep in mind that this man did
00:13:23
not seek publicity he did not seek to
00:13:26
come out from seclusion he was drawn out
00:13:31
brushy bill last Morrison to help him
00:13:34
get the official pardon that New
00:13:35
Mexico's governor had promised them back
00:13:37
in 1879 I expect a full pardon out of
00:13:41
this but you have to be able to prove to
00:13:43
me you are who you say you are I can do
00:13:46
that I still got the scars his scars
00:13:49
match the wounds that Billy had
00:13:51
supposedly received during his time as
00:13:53
an outlaw there were 17 points of
00:14:00
identification of similarity between the
00:14:04
two both men had small hands and large
00:14:08
wrists protruding teeth protruding ears
00:14:12
blue eyes same head size same boot size
00:14:17
and the weight there's no record
00:14:22
anywhere where there's anything having
00:14:24
to do with a boot size of Billy the Kid
00:14:27
a waist size of Billy the Kid or a hat
00:14:29
size of Billy the Kid nothing but it
00:14:32
does tell us something about his eyes
00:14:36
unequivocally without question that they
00:14:39
were clear blue eyes brushy bill had
00:14:44
speckled eyes brushy bill took William
00:14:51
Morrison on a guided tour of some of
00:14:54
Billy's former haunts in Lincoln County
00:14:57
brushy bill would give incidents that
00:15:01
only someone that was actually involved
00:15:04
in the Lincoln County War would have
00:15:05
known William Morrison talked to five
00:15:09
people who knew Billy during the Lincoln
00:15:12
County War each of them signed sworn
00:15:14
statements declaring that brushy bill
00:15:17
Roberts was indeed Billy the Kid
00:15:21
my father became convinced that this man
00:15:24
was Billy the Kid if this is true then
00:15:31
one puzzling question remains what
00:15:34
really happened on the night the kid was
00:15:36
supposedly killed brushy bill said that
00:15:41
he was with his girlfriend and his
00:15:43
partner Billy Barlow at hay-zu's Silva's
00:15:45
home the following are the exact words
00:15:50
Russia used when he told the story to
00:15:52
William Morrison Silva said if one of us
00:15:56
would go next door and get beef he would
00:15:59
cook it for us I sensed a trap you go me
00:16:04
yeah he started out after I refused to
00:16:09
leave the house I thought that Garret
00:16:12
might still be in town and I wanted to
00:16:15
meet him in the daytime so I could beat
00:16:17
him to it sheriff Garrett and his posse
00:16:22
were waiting outside one of their first
00:16:27
shots had killed my partner I ran out
00:16:31
into the yard
00:16:32
I ran started shooting at shadows shot
00:16:42
struck me in the lower jaw when I woke
00:16:52
up a Mexican woman was putting beef
00:16:55
tallow on my head to stop the blood I
00:16:58
told her to reload my 44 then celsa came
00:17:04
running in and said they killed Barlow
00:17:06
and were passing off his body's mind she
00:17:10
begged me to leave town
00:17:14
brushie claimed the next day that Billy
00:17:17
Barlow was buried in his place in a
00:17:22
normal procedure the chef would have
00:17:24
brought the corpse to a place for anyone
00:17:28
to witness he would have demonstrated
00:17:31
his guns his clothing his boots his
00:17:35
rifle
00:17:36
Pat Garrett did not follow that
00:17:39
procedure
00:17:42
he took every precaution to conceal the
00:17:46
identity of the corpse he realized he
00:17:50
had killed the wrong man
00:17:51
[Music]
00:17:53
Pat Garrett enlisted some 21 people that
00:17:57
purportedly knew William Bonney and they
00:18:01
assembled passed by the casket and said
00:18:04
yes that's William Bonney Billy the Kid
00:18:06
in that casket
00:18:10
William Morrison finally believed he had
00:18:13
gathered enough evidence to ask the New
00:18:15
Mexico governor for a pardon they were
00:18:23
all saying if he is Billy the Kid he's
00:18:25
an outlaw he's a criminal you don't
00:18:27
pardon him you're hanging the interview
00:18:31
turned into a press circus
00:18:33
ninety-year-old brushy was confused and
00:18:35
attacked by reporters historians and
00:18:38
even Pat Garrett's relatives brushy
00:18:42
who's buried in that grave of Pat
00:18:43
Garrett didn't kill Billy the Kid
00:18:45
how many aliases have you had all these
00:18:47
years governor Mabry do you really
00:18:48
intend to give this man apart all I am
00:18:51
taking no action now or ever on this
00:18:53
application for a pardon for Billy the
00:18:55
Kid because I do not believe this man to
00:18:58
be Billy the Kid
00:18:59
[Music]
00:19:01
the governor never even gave him a
00:19:03
chance to present the evidence by just
00:19:07
flatly telling him he wasn't even going
00:19:09
to consider it a short time later
00:19:13
brushy bill Roberts had a heart attack
00:19:15
and died on the street in Heikal Texas
00:19:19
all he wanted was to have his name
00:19:22
cleared that's all he was trying to do
00:19:24
giving back his dignity brushes friends
00:19:29
have erected a memorial to brushy bill
00:19:32
Roberts which reads quote he spent the
00:19:35
last days of his life trying to prove to
00:19:38
the world his true identity we believe
00:19:41
his story and pray to God for the
00:19:43
forgiveness he solemnly asked for next

00:20:24

00:20:30

at the park they would call me up and
00:20:58
tell me how lucky I was to have somebody
00:21:00
like Rosa I did not believe the Berman's
00:21:04
met Rosa Hernandez when she applied to
00:21:06
be the live-in nanny for two year old
00:21:08
Ashley that first day Hernandez brought
00:21:14
her cousin to help translate Rosa was
00:21:20
very highly recommended by various
00:21:23
neighbors one neighbor said that she was
00:21:24
wonderful and she would be perfect to to
00:21:27
watch our daughter and that she had
00:21:29
experience with kids and she was very
00:21:32
good at what she did when we brought
00:21:42
Ashley down to meet her Ashley seem to
00:21:45
connect very well as well as Rosa
00:21:47
connected with Ashley so I felt that
00:21:50
this was definitely going to work out
00:21:52
and that does she be good with Ashley
00:21:56
the next week Rosa Hernandez moved in
00:21:59
with the Berman's from the beginning she
00:22:01
and Ashley were inseparable
00:22:04
Ashley seemed to be very fond of Rosa
00:22:06
she always wanted to buy things for Rosa
00:22:08
she'd always talked about Rosa she
00:22:11
always wanted to make Rosa feel happy
00:22:13
for a year everything went well then
00:22:18
Ashley began suffering from a series of
00:22:21
mysterious injuries at school every time
00:22:29
we asked Ashley what happened how did
00:22:31
you get this she'd always tell us it
00:22:32
happened at school that she heard her
00:22:34
hand on the swing that a little boy hit
00:22:36
her with a shovel another child hit her
00:22:39
with a Barbie but then it happened at
00:22:42
home I actually got a deep gash on her
00:22:46
head that required several stitches you
00:22:49
fell down the stairs were you there mom
00:22:51
no the nanny was with her what happened
00:22:53
she's John andis said Ashley was
00:22:56
blacking out and having seizures
00:22:58
although the bourbons never witnessed an
00:23:01
episode themselves they feared that
00:23:03
Ashley had developed a serious
00:23:06
physiological disorder we put Ashley
00:23:09
through all kinds of tests we put her
00:23:11
through cat scans mris which were very
00:23:14
difficult to get a four and a half year
00:23:15
old child into an MRI with all the tests
00:23:20
they could find absolutely nothing
00:23:22
related towards seizures all indications
00:23:26
was is that she was a very healthy child
00:23:29
a few months later Jeff came home early
00:23:33
from a walk he found that Ashley had
00:23:38
been injured once again it was have
00:23:41
proceeded to tell me that Ashley had
00:23:43
fallen down she was wearing some shoes
00:23:45
and she tripped and she fell down and I
00:23:47
felt comfortable that she had just
00:23:49
fallen when this thing was reenacted by
00:23:51
Ashley
00:23:53
it all made sense just nine days later
00:24:00
Ashley was rushed to the emergency room
00:24:03
tell me what happened I thought oh she's
00:24:07
gonna die on us I mean I just looked at
00:24:10
her she was all pale hooked up and I'd
00:24:13
that one real loser and pretty much we
00:24:16
were told if she survived if she lived
00:24:18
she more than likely be [ __ ] or
00:24:21
blind or both all right give me a cat
00:24:26
scan after I examined Ashley I was
00:24:30
suspicious that Ashley might have been
00:24:32
abused she had some small hemorrhages in
00:24:35
the retina this is a condition that's
00:24:38
associated with shaken baby syndrome dr.
00:24:41
Gillingham decided to check Ashley's
00:24:43
medical history he called her
00:24:46
pediatrician I have one of your patients
00:24:47
here and Ashley Berman
00:24:50
it wasn't until I spoke with Ashley's
00:24:53
pediatrician that we made a connection
00:24:55
to a prior case and we're the same
00:24:57
caregiver I have been involved in taking
00:25:00
care of a child who died of what they
00:25:02
thought might be child abuse two years
00:25:06
earlier dr. Gillingham had treated a 17
00:25:09
month old boy who was rushed to the
00:25:11
hospital in a state of full cardiac
00:25:13
arrest that day the toddler had been in
00:25:17
the care of Rosa Hernandez the Berman's
00:25:20
knew about the incident but had heard
00:25:22
the boy choked on a hot dog we were able
00:25:26
to resuscitate the child the child was
00:25:28
subsequently admitted to the hospital
00:25:30
but then died within the next I think 17
00:25:33
or 18 hours an autopsy revealed that the
00:25:37
boy had a fractured skull and internal
00:25:39
bleeding his death was ruled a homicide
00:25:43
however there wasn't enough evidence to
00:25:45
charge Rosa Hernandez but now with
00:25:48
Ashley fighting for her life police
00:25:50
believed they had a case against
00:25:52
Hernandez she was charged with child
00:25:58
abuse
00:26:00
and Marie Ashleigh remained in the
00:26:07
hospital for a week eventually she made
00:26:10
a full recovery and with the experience
00:26:13
behind her Ashleigh was willing to talk
00:26:15
about Rosa Hernandez she used to push me
00:26:19
down the steps I would hire a remote
00:26:22
control to get her back and so she took
00:26:25
silverware and hit my nails and she
00:26:28
would also take care of earrings and
00:26:30
poke them through my nails and she would
00:26:34
bang my head against the walls the doors
00:26:36
and the wood floors
00:26:39
Hernandez pleaded guilty to involuntary
00:26:42
manslaughter and child abuse despite
00:26:45
protests from the Berman's she was
00:26:47
released on her own recognizance Rosa
00:26:50
Hernandez immediately disappeared I
00:26:53
[Music]
00:26:55
believe that it's been long enough
00:26:57
period of time that she feels safe and I
00:26:59
fear and she may be babysitting right
00:27:01
now another child that's going to fall
00:27:04
victim to her abuse Maria Rosa Hernandez
00:27:08
is from El Salvador she's five feet four
00:27:11
inches and weighs approximately 130
00:27:14
pounds she is a mother of three
00:27:17
Hernandez speaks broken English and has
00:27:19
what appears to be burned scars on her
00:27:22
right upper forearm

the world of psychic dreams do some
00:27:41
people really see into the future while
00:27:44
they sleep
00:27:49
[Music]
00:27:52
have you ever had a dream that was so
00:27:55
vivid you thought it was real
00:27:57
it may seem unbelievable but you're
00:28:00
about to meet several people who are
00:28:02
convinced that their dreams really do
00:28:05
come true New York City
00:28:11
Glenn Looney is a professor at Brooklyn
00:28:14
College his story begins on a cold
00:28:18
winter night when he says he had a dream
00:28:20
that saved his life
00:28:22
I was driving up a hill and there was a
00:28:27
blind curve up at the top there came a
00:28:31
car around the curve there's a little
00:28:34
two wheel trailer blind and suddenly the
00:28:38
outside wheel of the trailer comes off
00:28:40
and there was a shower of sparks like a
00:28:42
sparkler the wheel came skidding across
00:28:45
the road toward my car and I thought
00:28:47
step on the gas or you're a dead man
00:28:52
and I woke up in a cold sweat I never
00:28:54
had a dream that I remembered every
00:28:56
particular detail up and it was so vivid
00:28:59
as if it had actually happened
00:29:02
a few months later Glenn was on a
00:29:07
business trip with another professor
00:29:08
they were driving through a part of the
00:29:11
country where they had never been before
00:29:13
how's your classes going by the way Oh
00:29:15
fine good halfway up I realized this is
00:29:19
the hill of my dream this is the place
00:29:21
there was no traffic coming the other
00:29:23
way nothing all right
00:29:26
I said my god it cars gonna come around
00:29:29
that curve and wheels going to come off
00:29:31
the trailer and it's going to come out
00:29:32
our car I got a step on the gas or dead
00:29:35
[Music]
00:29:46
some would say that what happened to
00:29:48
Glenn was just a coincidence however
00:29:52
there are many people who believe that
00:29:54
what he experienced was a psychic dream
00:29:57
a dream that predicts the future there's
00:30:04
a clear distinction between ordinary
00:30:06
dreaming which we all do every night and
00:30:08
the psychic dream and the clear
00:30:10
distinction is that a psychic dream
00:30:12
wakes you both up right out of bed it's
00:30:17
a vivid dream that literally shocks you
00:30:21
awake and after you wake you have this
00:30:23
urgency to do something about it this
00:30:25
urgency to expect something dr. David
00:30:30
Rybak is a leading authority on psychic
00:30:33
dreams he and freelance author Letitia
00:30:36
Switzer have written a book which
00:30:38
contains more than 80 case studies dr.
00:30:42
Rybak concluded that as many as one out
00:30:45
of every 12 people have experienced a
00:30:48
psychic dream when I first realized that
00:30:52
I had the ability to see into the future
00:30:56
through my dreams was when I was a
00:30:58
teenager Rhonda who is featured in dr.
00:31:01
Rybak's book was living in Knoxville
00:31:04
Tennessee when she began dating Joe
00:31:06
Anderson Joe went camping for the
00:31:09
weekend and that night Rhonda had a
00:31:12
dream that an uninvited guest came to
00:31:16
his campsite
00:31:27
my heart was pounding so hard that I had
00:31:32
to sit up in my bed and I looked at the
00:31:34
clock
00:31:35
and it was three o'clock in the morning
00:31:38
hello oh I'm so glad you called I told
00:31:43
it we'd had an incident with a bear and
00:31:45
decided to leave come back home early he
00:31:49
told her that a sound outside his tent
00:31:51
woke him up she had to dream about three
00:31:55
o'clock it must have been about the time
00:32:00
that the bear had come into camp and
00:32:01
torn things up about a year later Joe
00:32:06
and Rhonda got married not surprisingly
00:32:10
his new stepdaughter Roxanne also
00:32:13
claimed to have psychic dreams some
00:32:16
families have two or three people in the
00:32:19
family who not only has psychic dreams
00:32:21
would have the same psychic dreams which
00:32:23
is a really astounding event Rhonda and
00:32:27
Roxanne have had that experience one
00:32:31
night
00:32:31
Rhonda dreamed that Joe was in a
00:32:33
terrible accident
00:32:34
a week later Roxanne said that she had
00:32:39
the very same dream our car was on the
00:32:42
side of the road and then I saw a
00:32:45
glimpse of Joe his head his face and
00:32:48
then I saw police right in the police
00:32:51
report it was really really disturbing
00:32:53
to me it really upset me because it just
00:32:56
you know it scared me and it felt like
00:32:58
it was something that was going to
00:32:59
happen
00:33:01
I said let's just think positively about
00:33:04
it and let's just pray that everything
00:33:07
will be okay and from then on I would
00:33:11
just ask Joe to please be careful Joe
00:33:16
was driving to the mountains for another
00:33:18
camping trip when he took his eyes off
00:33:20
the road for just a second
00:33:30
luckily I wasn't injured of course the
00:33:33
first thing I thought about after that
00:33:34
happened was that Ron did warned me to
00:33:37
be very careful and I had not paid
00:33:39
attention to the road and slid off and
00:33:41
had the accident had we not warned him
00:33:46
over and over again to please be careful
00:33:48
we don't know what would have happened
00:33:51
the Andersons were lucky their story had
00:33:54
a happy ending but that wasn't the case
00:34:00
for Katherine Webb
00:34:02
[Music]
00:34:04
so I'm so glad you're back it's so good
00:34:06
to see you 20 year old Catherine Webb
00:34:08
fell in love with a soldier named Joe
00:34:11
Stuart but they decided not to get
00:34:13
married because of family obligations
00:34:16
yes I've always regretted that instead
00:34:19
of being so conscientious about our
00:34:21
obligations we should have thought of
00:34:24
ourselves and though she would marry
00:34:27
someone else
00:34:28
Catherine never forgot her first love
00:34:32
years later she began having a
00:34:35
disturbing recurring dream all I saw was
00:34:43
these nurses and doctors a lot of
00:34:45
confusion a doctor seemed very concerned
00:34:48
probably working on someone that would
00:34:51
be how it would look and then it seemed
00:34:56
to me that I just got the intuition that
00:34:58
it's about Joe Stuart a short time later
00:35:03
Catherine had another dream I turned
00:35:09
around and Joe was standing there Joe
00:35:13
came to tell you that I died Joe I don't
00:35:18
understand this I'll explain
00:35:19
I could smell flowers and fern thanks to
00:35:25
your prayers I'll have a Christian
00:35:27
burial and I look down at the man in the
00:35:30
casket I came to tell you that I'll
00:35:35
always love him a few days later
00:35:42
Katherine visited Joe's sister and
00:35:45
brother-in-law she was shocked to find
00:35:47
out that Joe had gone into a coma the
00:35:50
same day that she had the first dream he
00:35:54
had died of a brain aneurysm just two
00:35:57
days before he appeared to Katherine and
00:35:59
her dream about the church Joe came to
00:36:04
me in a dream and when I did tell them
00:36:07
his sister said yes she's every detail
00:36:10
you've told us she said it's just the
00:36:12
way it was perhaps the phenomenon of
00:36:15
psychic dreams will always be beyond our
00:36:18
understanding there is no way to explain
00:36:23
them they are truly an unsolved mystery
00:36:31
next it's the real-life CSI coroner's
00:36:35
try to solve some of the law-enforcement
00:36:37
toughest cases
00:36:47
when a corner is called to the scene of
00:36:49
a death it's their job to remove the
00:36:52
body and determine how the victim died
00:36:55
often not an easy task Seal Beach
00:37:01
California early one fall morning two
00:37:07
lifeguards find the body of a young boy
00:37:10
floating in a channel near the ocean the
00:37:13
body is so badly decomposed they can't
00:37:16
identify it
00:37:17
coroner's investigator Joe lucky was
00:37:20
sent to the scene it takes a while
00:37:25
sometimes to get over the fact that you
00:37:28
can't identify these people you think
00:37:31
about your own families and know that
00:37:32
there's somebody out there who's missing
00:37:35
a relative somebody but we don't know
00:37:38
who he found no evidence of foul play an
00:37:41
autopsy later revealed that the young
00:37:44
boy had drowned but who the boy was and
00:37:48
where he came from was still a baffling
00:37:51
mystery Joe sent a description of the
00:37:55
boy to every law enforcement agency in
00:37:58
the area only one possible match turned
00:38:01
up a boy who had disappeared from
00:38:04
Fullerton California but Fullerton was
00:38:07
16 miles from where the body was
00:38:10
discovered
00:38:10
fart Joe met the boy's parents who said
00:38:15
their son had disappeared shortly after
00:38:17
taking a walk to a local park
00:38:22
I went over to the park and I found that
00:38:25
there was a flood control channel right
00:38:28
adjacent to the park I also discovered
00:38:31
that because of the rainfall the day of
00:38:34
his missing that the Flood Control
00:38:36
District had opened the local dam and
00:38:39
allowed the overflow to come through
00:38:41
that channel raising it approximately
00:38:44
six feet higher than normal the boy was
00:38:48
only nine years old he had fallen into
00:38:51
the flood channel and been swept 16
00:38:54
miles to Seal Beach
00:38:56
blood samples later provided a positive
00:38:59
identification but some cases remain
00:39:07
unsolved even after years of
00:39:09
investigation a corner is probably a
00:39:13
good mixture of being a surgeon a
00:39:15
detective and an attorney every day is a
00:39:18
challenge that's new all the time one
00:39:21
case in particular continues to haunt
00:39:23
Cullen elenberg the body of a woman in
00:39:28
her early 20s was found at the bottom of
00:39:30
a steep cliff in Southern California
00:39:34
what are you God the woman had
00:39:36
apparently fallen to her death
00:39:38
sometime during the night we weren't
00:39:41
sure at that point if it was an accident
00:39:44
or intentional or as she had been pushed
00:39:46
I went to the top of the cliff and there
00:39:51
I found a small purse half consumed soda
00:39:55
and a map of Southern California
00:39:58
strangely there was nothing else in her
00:40:01
purse but the men led Cullen to the last
00:40:04
person who saw her alive there was a
00:40:08
phone number on the map the phone number
00:40:11
was that of a cab company and the cab
00:40:14
company was contacted and they indicated
00:40:17
they had a fare picked up from the area
00:40:20
and dropped off at the area of the Dana
00:40:23
Point cliffs at about 3:00 or 4:00 that
00:40:26
morning
00:40:27
the cab driver described the Jane Doe
00:40:29
who fell to her death
00:40:31
at Dana Point you the lady called for
00:40:34
cab she wanted to go to Laguna Beach but
00:40:39
didn't have enough cash
00:40:41
[Music]
00:40:44
the cabdriver agreed to take her as far
00:40:47
as the money would go ya sure get the
00:40:50
bag the only thing the taxi driver said
00:40:54
was that she had very little to say
00:40:56
other than that she was very quiet and
00:40:58
he didn't notice anything really unusual
00:41:00
about her
00:41:05
the meter says 18 bucks man that's the
00:41:07
best I could do thank you good night
00:41:18
the next morning the young woman's body
00:41:21
was found at the base of the cliff she
00:41:25
was 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed 127
00:41:29
pounds
00:41:29
she had light brown hair brown eyes and
00:41:32
was wearing what appeared to be
00:41:34
secondhand clothing including a pair of
00:41:37
men's underwear update there are new
00:41:44
developments in this case
00:41:45
here's one of our staff with details
00:41:48
