Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 7, Episode 5 - Updated Full Episode

July 26, 2021 / 43:27

This episode covers UFO sightings in Mexico during the 1991 solar eclipse, the murder of Sammy Wheeler in Virginia, and the disappearance of Gordon Page Jr.

The segment on UFOs discusses how thousands of people reported sightings during the solar eclipse on July 11, 1991. Guillermo Araguin filmed a UFO, which led to a flood of similar reports and videos. Jaime Moussan, a respected journalist, highlighted the phenomenon, noting that multiple videos captured identical objects in the sky.

The murder mystery of Sammy Wheeler unfolds as his twin brother, girlfriend, and her ex-husband accuse each other of the crime. Sammy was found shot in his vehicle, and the investigation revealed a web of personal conflicts and motives, but ultimately, no one was charged.

Finally, the episode tells the story of Gordon Page Jr., who was misdiagnosed with autism and later disappeared from a group home. His parents share their struggles with his diagnosis and their ongoing search for him after he went missing.

The episode concludes with a call for viewers to provide any information that could help solve these mysteries.

participated in recreating the events
00:00:12
what you're about to see is not a news
00:00:14
broadcast
00:00:20
when a spectacular solar eclipse plunged
00:00:22
much of mexico into darkness
00:00:24
no one imagined that the event would
00:00:26
spawn an astounding wave of ufo
00:00:28
sightings
00:00:29
sightings experienced by thousands of
00:00:31
eyewitnesses all across mexico
00:00:33
and captured on dozens of home videos
00:00:38
on june 7th 1992 36 year old sammy
00:00:41
wheeler was found shot to death in his
00:00:43
car
00:00:44
and the small town of stanton virginia
00:00:46
was overrun with rumors
00:00:48
incredibly sammy's twin brothers sammy's
00:00:51
old girlfriend and her ex-husband are
00:00:53
taking turns accusing each other of the
00:00:55
murder
00:00:56
but still the question remains who
00:00:59
killed sammy wheeler
00:01:02
and perhaps someone watching can provide
00:01:04
a happy ending to the poignant story of
00:01:06
gordon page jr
00:01:08
only after years of misdiagnosis did
00:01:10
gode's parents learn
00:01:12
that their son was suffering from autism
00:01:15
then in 1991 gordy vanished from the
00:01:18
group home in which he had been placed
00:01:22
jointly perhaps you may be able to help
00:01:25
solve a mystery

00:02:21
usually when we hear that a person in
00:02:23
some remote community is at a ufo
00:02:25
sighting
00:02:26
we respond with a smile and a shake of
00:02:28
the head
00:02:29
when three or four credible people
00:02:30
report seeing a mysterious craft
00:02:33
we may pay just slightly more attention
00:02:35
but when thousands of people claim to
00:02:37
see the same strange object
00:02:39
and hunters provide videotape evidence
00:02:42
we may begin to think that maybe
00:02:44
just maybe there is more than a grain of
00:02:46
truth to the reports
00:02:47
which brings us to the fantastic saga of
00:02:50
the mexico ufos
00:02:55
july 11 1991 the last total eclipse of
00:02:59
the sun in this century
00:03:01
perhaps the most spectacular celestial
00:03:03
event of the past
00:03:05
200 years
00:03:08
for the residents of mexico city the
00:03:10
eclipse prompted a festive celebration
00:03:13
thousands took to the streets as one of
00:03:15
the world's largest cities was plunged
00:03:17
into total darkness
00:03:18
in the middle of broad daylight
00:03:21
no one imagined the entire country was
00:03:24
about to be swept up
00:03:25
in a wave of ufo hysteria
00:03:29
that afternoon a television executive
00:03:31
named guillermo araguin was videotaping
00:03:34
the eclipse
00:03:35
when he noticed an unusual object
00:03:37
overhead
00:03:37
[Music]
00:03:39
it was presented on the news it was said
00:03:42
that a very strange
00:03:43
object was over mexico city but nobody
00:03:46
said what it was when i saw it
00:03:48
i said oh my god this is a ufo a real
00:03:51
ufo
00:03:53
i mean you can look at it you can look
00:03:55
the video and be absolutely convinced
00:03:57
what are you looking at
00:04:00
jaime moussan is one of mexico's most
00:04:03
respected television journalists
00:04:05
for the past nine years he has produced
00:04:07
directed and hosted mexico's edition of
00:04:10
60 minutes or sesenta minutos eight days
00:04:14
after the eclipse
00:04:15
jaime presented the aragine footage as
00:04:18
part of a special ufo broadcast
00:04:20
the network was inundated with phone
00:04:23
calls
00:04:24
we asked the people in mexico to bring
00:04:27
or their videos to us
00:04:28
because we like to see in if in the
00:04:30
clips they had recorded the same stuff
00:04:33
the telephone lines blew up i mean 40
00:04:36
000
00:04:36
calls at the same time then
00:04:40
the the system was completely shot out
00:04:43
we received more than 15 videos and we
00:04:46
now know for sure that at least in seven
00:04:48
of them
00:04:48
we can see the same exactly the same
00:04:51
ship that was recorded by guillermo
00:04:54
aragina
00:04:56
one of the many videos was sent by eric
00:04:58
aguilar
00:04:59
a 19 year old student at national
00:05:01
university of mexico
00:05:03
he was setting up to film the eclipse
00:05:05
from a rooftop when his girlfriend
00:05:07
spotted something unusual in the sky
00:05:17
my girlfriend commented that it was a
00:05:18
ufo we thought it was a joke
00:05:21
no one really believed her when she said
00:05:23
she saw a ufo
00:05:25
but within moments they all decided that
00:05:28
the object was not a joke at all
00:05:33
at first all we saw was a white dot in
00:05:36
the sky
00:05:38
that's all we could see in the beginning
00:05:40
later
00:05:42
we saw that this dot was
00:05:45
shining brightly
00:05:46
[Music]
00:05:48
it must have been a very bright star and
00:05:51
we didn't realize it at first we didn't
00:05:54
realize it until we saw the video tape
00:05:55
later
00:05:57
we saw that this dot
00:06:00
it wasn't a dot it was a larger object
00:06:03
and it was giving off light it was
00:06:06
shining
00:06:09
at virtually the same time 60 miles from
00:06:11
mexico city
00:06:13
a businessman named luis lara
00:06:15
photographed a similar object
00:06:20
as i raised the camera you could see
00:06:22
something in the clouds
00:06:24
and it was a metal object and it looked
00:06:26
like it was made of
00:06:28
two plates you can distinguish a dome
00:06:31
and it turned on its own axis
00:06:33
it was silver plated a color like
00:06:36
aluminum
00:06:38
you could see clearly it's not a star
00:06:42
it's a ufo because it had a shadow in it
00:06:45
if it were a star or a planet you you
00:06:47
would see clearly that it would be
00:06:48
completely luminous
00:06:50
but this one had a little shadow
00:06:51
underneath
00:06:56
yet another video was shot by the bratan
00:06:59
family in puebla
00:07:00
a city 80 miles east of mexico city
00:07:03
[Music]
00:07:07
magnifying the baton video revealed an
00:07:09
odd wave-like disturbance behind the
00:07:11
pulsating disk
00:07:13
perhaps some kind of energy trail
00:07:18
jaime moussan enhanced the aragine
00:07:21
footage and compared it to the baton
00:07:23
tape
00:07:24
the objects the photograph nearly 100
00:07:26
miles apart
00:07:27
were remarkably similar in every aspect
00:07:31
the video from puebla was absolutely
00:07:34
identical to the one we had seen with
00:07:37
arregin in mexico
00:07:40
it was for the first time in history
00:07:41
never before we you had
00:07:43
a tape of two ufos in two different
00:07:46
places
00:07:47
at exactly the same moment the videos
00:07:50
caused a sensation throughout mexico
00:07:53
but the ufo craze was just beginning
00:07:59
two months later an engineer named
00:08:01
vincente sanchez
00:08:02
took his video camera to a military air
00:08:05
show in mexico city
00:08:08
i was following one of the planes and i
00:08:10
saw a shiny dot in the camera
00:08:12
i didn't know what it was but it seemed
00:08:15
to be moving
00:08:16
it was undulating so i let the planes go
00:08:19
off
00:08:19
and i focused more on this shiny dot in
00:08:22
the sky
00:08:26
[Music]
00:08:28
what i saw was a bright round object
00:08:32
about 10 meters in diameter it was made
00:08:35
of silver
00:08:36
it was shining very brightly and
00:08:38
reflected the sunlight a lot
00:08:40
[Music]
00:08:44
it didn't fly like a plane it was
00:08:46
undulated
00:08:47
the object appeared undulated and moved
00:08:50
around very quickly
00:08:53
a year later a similar object was
00:08:55
videotaped at the same air show
00:08:58
this time the disc descended rapidly and
00:09:00
mysteriously disappeared
00:09:04
by the time the 1993 air show rolled
00:09:07
around
00:09:07
people anticipated another sighting
00:09:10
sure enough just as a squadron of
00:09:13
helicopters flew by
00:09:14
the familiar metallic disc appeared
00:09:19
it was traveling against the wind so
00:09:22
much so that had been a balloon
00:09:24
considering the force of the helicopter
00:09:26
blades it would have crashed
00:09:29
it kept on its path very very straight
00:09:31
and steady until it got lost in the sky
00:09:36
optical enhancement of this video seems
00:09:38
to reveal that the object crossed in
00:09:40
close proximity to the helicopters
00:09:42
curiously the military has consistently
00:09:45
declined to address the matter
00:09:48
the military hasn't made any comment on
00:09:50
that sighting or any sighting
00:09:52
and there are many more where we can
00:09:55
relate the military or
00:09:57
military planes to videos and
00:10:01
however we haven't have any kind of
00:10:04
answer
00:10:05
from them
00:10:08
since the eclipse in july of 1991 there
00:10:11
have been thousands of sightings
00:10:12
throughout mexico
00:10:14
there is no clear pattern although the
00:10:16
great majority have occurred in and
00:10:17
around mexico city
00:10:19
the witnesses range from pilots to
00:10:21
doctors to bus drivers
00:10:23
and even school children
00:10:25
[Music]
00:10:27
these drawings are made by a class of
00:10:29
fifth graders who allegedly saw ufos in
00:10:32
march of 1993
00:10:34
the pictures are strikingly similar in
00:10:36
detail
00:10:37
three shining lights with the brightest
00:10:40
light in the center
00:10:41
[Music]
00:10:44
the objects were silver with red
00:10:49
one of them was coming down and
00:10:52
the other one that you could see in the
00:10:54
sky
00:10:55
was silver
00:10:59
when they were a little lower you could
00:11:00
see the shape of the objects
00:11:03
they were like saucers with the dome
00:11:06
everything's silver
00:11:08
and though it was harder to see there
00:11:10
seemed to be a kind of
00:11:11
reddish magnetic field
00:11:16
we haven't found a single reason why
00:11:18
these little kids
00:11:19
made this story up there were so many
00:11:23
and when you talk to them you can feel
00:11:27
the honesty that they trust me they're
00:11:29
just little kids
00:11:30
they don't care about the ufo conspiracy
00:11:33
they don't care about if they are real
00:11:35
or not
00:11:36
they saw what they saw people
00:11:40
really like ufos people really believe
00:11:43
in ufos
00:11:44
and we are now convinced that we are
00:11:47
living an incredible experience
00:11:49
as a country as a society because it's
00:11:52
everywhere
00:11:53
it's not just one people is many people
00:11:56
with their eyes in the sky and a camera
00:11:59
in their hands
00:12:00
now is the video era and the video is
00:12:03
going to solve
00:12:04
the ufo mystery are the mexico ufos real
00:12:10
it is difficult to deny the startling
00:12:12
images captured on videotape
00:12:14
though a determined skeptic would no
00:12:15
doubt find some basis to discount the
00:12:18
entire episode
00:12:19
but for those who have actually
00:12:20
witnessed the mysterious objects in the
00:12:22
skies over mexico
00:12:24
seeing is believing
00:12:27
[Music]
00:12:30
next a bizarre murder mystery in which
00:12:32
three people
00:12:33
including the victim's twin brother
00:12:35
accuse each other of pulling the trigger
00:12:47
on june 7th 1992 the george washington
00:12:50
national forest in virginia was visited
00:12:53
by murder
00:12:54
that morning the body of 36 year old
00:12:57
sammy wheeler was found in the back seat
00:12:59
of his sport vehicle
00:13:01
sammy had been shot six times in the
00:13:03
head and upper torso
00:13:07
both the local sheriff's department and
00:13:09
the fbi investigated
00:13:11
they quickly determined that the killer
00:13:13
had gone to great lengths to clean the
00:13:15
crime scene
00:13:16
all shell casings and fingerprints had
00:13:18
been removed and an amateurish attempt
00:13:21
had been made to destroy the evidence
00:13:25
there was an apparent effort to try and
00:13:29
ignite the uh the vehicle there was some
00:13:32
paper and tissue
00:13:34
stuffed in the gas cap the gas cap had
00:13:36
been opened and apparently
00:13:37
a cigarette laid there lit in an effort
00:13:40
to try there was some burning around
00:13:42
there but it
00:13:42
it didn't ignite and didn't take effect
00:13:47
when investigators discovered that
00:13:48
sammy's wallet was missing
00:13:50
the case took on all the earmarks of a
00:13:52
random act of violence
00:13:54
but before long it would be revealed
00:13:56
that at least three people in sami
00:13:58
wheeler's life might have watered him
00:14:00
dead
00:14:01
sammy's twin brother danny sammy's
00:14:03
girlfriend pat snead
00:14:05
and pat's estranged husband bob bean
00:14:09
[Music]
00:14:11
what had begun as a routine
00:14:12
investigation quickly became a classic
00:14:14
drama of love lies and murder
00:14:17
in the months following sammy wheeler's
00:14:19
death danny wheeler pat sneed and bob
00:14:22
bean
00:14:22
took turns accusing each other of the
00:14:24
crime
00:14:26
in this bizarre and convoluted case the
00:14:28
principals agree on only one thing
00:14:31
it all started when sammy wheeler began
00:14:33
dating pat snead
00:14:38
in the fall of 1991 pat moved into a
00:14:41
rental unit owned by sammy's twin
00:14:43
brother danny
00:14:44
the property had been divided into
00:14:46
separate apartments
00:14:48
pat and her two sons lived in one
00:14:49
apartment with sammy
00:14:51
danny lived in one of the others the
00:14:53
arrangement suited everyone
00:14:55
except pat's estranged husband bob bean
00:14:59
the situation was not really
00:15:02
what was in the best interest of my
00:15:04
children i had approached patton
00:15:07
and asked her to please
00:15:10
stop this living arrangement here okay
00:15:16
we won't get into responses but uh
00:15:20
anyway i felt that i was forced into
00:15:22
going to court
00:15:24
to at least provide some kind or try to
00:15:28
provide some kind of moral environment
00:15:29
for my children
00:15:32
in february a court order was issued
00:15:34
that prohibited sammy from being with
00:15:36
pat in the presence of the boys
00:15:38
to comply sammy moved into his twin
00:15:40
brother's apartment
00:15:46
bob bean remained suspicious he hired a
00:15:49
private investigator to ensure that the
00:15:51
court order was being obeyed
00:15:57
bob's private investigator came in and
00:16:00
testified that
00:16:01
sammy had violated the court's order
00:16:04
sammy never found out whether or not the
00:16:06
judge believed that
00:16:07
i know for sure sam did not violate that
00:16:09
court order
00:16:10
but just to be safe he stayed away from
00:16:13
the house then
00:16:14
he was living in a truck without even a
00:16:16
bathroom or a shower
00:16:18
just to appease bob bean so where are
00:16:21
you gonna stay tonight
00:16:23
probably just stay in the car i hate it
00:16:25
when you sleep in the car
00:16:26
honey i can't give them any more
00:16:28
ammunition they've already got
00:16:31
i never harbored any ill will at all
00:16:34
towards sam
00:16:35
people around here have a hard time
00:16:36
understanding how a man can
00:16:39
accept that his wife is leaving him for
00:16:42
another man
00:16:43
well to be honest with you i knew what i
00:16:46
had
00:16:47
and i was thankful to pass it on
00:16:50
okay but
00:16:54
after getting to know sam i found
00:16:57
i kind of felt sorry for him and i
00:16:59
wanted to sit down and prepare him for
00:17:01
what he was getting
00:17:03
bob hated sam sam knew it
00:17:06
and i knew it bob says otherwise because
00:17:09
i believe bob is a pathological liar
00:17:13
sam expressed to me that he felt
00:17:16
that my ex-husband bob was
00:17:19
capable of pretty much anything
00:17:22
he did not trust him
00:17:27
on june 3rd four days before he was
00:17:29
murdered sammy left danny's apartment at
00:17:31
5
00:17:32
30 a.m and chanced upon an unexpected
00:17:34
visitor
00:17:35
bob bean's teenage son from a previous
00:17:38
marriage
00:17:43
come here what are you doing
00:17:46
just taking a few pictures yeah i see
00:17:48
that you tell your dad i'm staying in
00:17:50
the apartment okay
00:17:51
with danny i'm not in the house i'm not
00:17:53
with pat i'm not with the kids
00:17:54
i'm with my brother in the apartment
00:17:56
just like i'm supposed to be okay i'm
00:17:57
i'm just taking some
00:17:58
okay we'll cut it out huh all right no
00:18:00
more pictures got it no more pictures
00:18:02
all right i thought that was very very
00:18:05
strange for somebody to be taking
00:18:07
my twin brother's photograph at 5 30 in
00:18:09
the morning
00:18:11
i didn't like it at all
00:18:16
that saturday at around 9 15 p.m sammy
00:18:19
set off for elk horn lake
00:18:20
approximately 40 miles from his house he
00:18:23
planned to spend the night in his truck
00:18:25
and begin fishing early the next day
00:18:30
12 hours later sammy wheeler was dead
00:18:36
i believe bob bean had a motive to kill
00:18:38
my brother
00:18:40
pets divorce from bob was going to be
00:18:42
final on tuesday
00:18:44
they were going to be married on
00:18:45
thursday
00:18:48
sammy was killed on sunday
00:18:52
just by coincidence just by coincidence
00:18:55
sure it was sure it was a coincidence
00:18:58
sure it was
00:18:59
i'm michael jordan too i used to play
00:19:01
for the chicago bulls
00:19:04
go talk to the people who know me okay
00:19:06
and ask them
00:19:07
if i was really upset if pat was leaving
00:19:11
okay the answer to that is no
00:19:16
so there's no motive
00:19:20
on the face of it bob bean was a perfect
00:19:23
suspect
00:19:24
but he also had what appeared to be the
00:19:26
perfect alibi
00:19:28
when sammy was murdered bean was on
00:19:30
maneuvers with his army national guard
00:19:32
unit
00:19:34
the night that he was killed i was on
00:19:37
duty until
00:19:39
eleven o'clock that night now the death
00:19:42
certificate
00:19:43
indicates the time of death at one
00:19:45
o'clock
00:19:47
the camp that i was at is about 150
00:19:50
miles away
00:19:52
there was no way that i could physically
00:19:55
get from
00:19:56
the camp to the murder scene
00:19:59
in that amount of time to kill sam it's
00:20:02
just physically impossible
00:20:03
one of our men from our department at
00:20:05
the time was in the same unit
00:20:07
and remember seeing bob there so things
00:20:10
checked out pretty good for him
00:20:12
i feel like that bob being new just as
00:20:15
soon as sam wheeler
00:20:17
was found dead he knew they were going
00:20:19
to come knocking on his door
00:20:21
so he knew that he better have his story
00:20:23
right
00:20:25
danny wheeler believes that bob bean
00:20:27
later gave the photographs that his
00:20:29
teenage son took
00:20:30
to a professional hitman you'd have to
00:20:34
pay for the hitman and
00:20:36
the fbi investigated my finances and i
00:20:40
i don't have quite what it takes to pay
00:20:44
a professional
00:20:45
there was nothing at all
00:20:50
to support the theory of bob hiring
00:20:52
someone
00:20:54
that that just didn't go inward with the
00:20:57
investigation
00:21:00
in the end bob bean was cleared as a
00:21:03
suspect
00:21:04
but the question remained who murdered
00:21:07
sammy wheeler
00:21:11
as far as alibis go the only one who
00:21:13
really doesn't have an alibi
00:21:16
according to what she's told me is pat
00:21:23
bob bean first began to suspect pat a
00:21:25
week after the murder
00:21:26
when their sons ages three and four
00:21:28
began talking about
00:21:30
the crime scene in surprising detail
00:21:36
yes i know that some very bad guy shot
00:21:38
sam
00:21:40
he was in the trooper that's right he
00:21:42
was found in his car
00:21:45
we went to the mountain you did
00:21:51
when did you go to the mountains when
00:21:53
sam got shot
00:21:55
at first i didn't think much of it
00:21:58
but later on they started getting a
00:22:01
little bit more specific
00:22:03
and offering a little bit more details
00:22:06
and all of a sudden when they would come
00:22:08
to visit i noticed
00:22:10
that they were exhibiting some definite
00:22:12
behavior
00:22:14
uh which was suggestive
00:22:17
that uh they were scared they were
00:22:20
frightened okay
00:22:21
now let me just make sure that the
00:22:22
camera's working all right
00:22:24
bob bean was so convinced that he even
00:22:27
videotaped his sons
00:22:28
and then presented the tape to the
00:22:30
police who was there when sam died
00:22:33
[Music]
00:22:35
mommy mommy was there yeah
00:22:39
i believe bob is a very very sick man
00:22:42
the fact that he would put his kids in
00:22:44
the position that he has his little two
00:22:46
and three-year-old children
00:22:47
at that time through what he put them
00:22:49
through proves that he has no scruples
00:22:51
no morals he cares about no one now not
00:22:54
even his own flesh and blood
00:22:56
little infant children he is a sick sick
00:22:59
man
00:23:01
you know in the end the police dismissed
00:23:04
the boy's testimony as unreliable
00:23:06
investigators also believe that pat had
00:23:09
an airtight alibi
00:23:13
i'll see you later i'm gonna be in the
00:23:14
living room if you need anything so give
00:23:16
me a call
00:23:16
okay okay the night that sam was killed
00:23:20
i was at home alone with my two children
00:23:25
i had absolutely no motive to kill sam
00:23:29
wheeler
00:23:30
sam was sam and my children were my life
00:23:34
and i planned for them to be for a long
00:23:36
time
00:23:39
pat snead was eliminated as a suspect
00:23:41
perhaps not surprisingly
00:23:43
bob beam soon raised yet another
00:23:45
possibility
00:23:48
there's only two things that can come
00:23:49
between brothers
00:23:51
twin brothers that i'm aware of it's
00:23:54
money and a woman
00:23:59
that's all i got to say i you know i
00:24:02
don't offer anything
00:24:04
i'll let somebody else make the
00:24:06
accusations
00:24:07
immediately after sam was killed um
00:24:11
the only person that i had in mind who i
00:24:13
thought did it
00:24:14
was my ex-husband i have since then
00:24:20
had time lots of time as you know
00:24:24
to think about things that have happened
00:24:26
and
00:24:28
to wonder you know if somebody else
00:24:31
could
00:24:32
have had a reason for wanting sam dead
00:24:36
sam's brother danny may have wanted him
00:24:40
out of the way
00:24:41
the reason for that i have been told is
00:24:44
that danny was in love with me
00:24:47
pat says that shortly after sammy's
00:24:49
death danny made a surprising confession
00:24:51
to one of her girlfriends
00:24:54
she just said that danny wheeler told
00:24:57
her
00:24:58
that he was in love with me that he had
00:25:00
been in love with me for a long time
00:25:03
that he thought about me every night
00:25:05
that he wanted to hold me in his arms
00:25:07
every night
00:25:08
there's not an ounce of truth in those
00:25:10
allegations
00:25:12
if she married my brother she was gonna
00:25:13
be like a sister to me
00:25:16
and my family doesn't go in for incest
00:25:21
she never once physically attracted me
00:25:26
even before sam got involved with her i
00:25:28
didn't think she was a good-looking
00:25:30
woman
00:25:32
on the morning of sammy's body was
00:25:34
discovered his father and sergeant
00:25:36
height broke the news to danny and pat
00:25:38
he's dead son oh no pat believes danny's
00:25:42
hysterical reaction was a clever ploy
00:25:45
to hide the fact that he was the killer
00:25:48
where'd you go get bobby he's trying to
00:25:50
help him out he's down the road don't
00:25:51
you go get him you know it's him
00:25:52
not sure don't you go get him daddy dad
00:25:54
i told you long ago it was bob
00:25:57
he doesn't know we don't know anything
00:25:58
about beans get out of my way
00:26:00
danny what this is not gonna happen i
00:26:02
think most of his
00:26:04
behavior when he first found out that
00:26:07
that sam was dead
00:26:08
was a show was to make
00:26:12
everybody else basically more than
00:26:15
likely the law enforcement people
00:26:16
more than anybody else to
00:26:20
think that he was feeling
00:26:23
some way that he wasn't i think he was
00:26:25
putting on a show for them
00:26:27
why is she lying it makes me wonder what
00:26:29
is she hiding it makes me wonder
00:26:32
god knows what that did to me when my
00:26:35
brother died
00:26:38
and why she would say things like that
00:26:41
makes me wonder about her
00:26:44
maybe bob bean didn't kill my brother
00:26:46
maybe it was pet that killed
00:26:48
my brother as for
00:26:52
danny the police confirmed that he also
00:26:54
has an alibi
00:26:55
on the night of sammy's murder danny was
00:26:58
seen bar hopping until the early morning
00:27:00
hours
00:27:03
pat snead bob bean and danny wheeler
00:27:06
would would not be considered any more
00:27:09
suspects uh in this case than um
00:27:12
than anyone else at the at the present
00:27:14
time they
00:27:15
they provided alibis we've corroborated
00:27:17
them they've
00:27:18
taken a polygraph they've shown no
00:27:20
deception uh
00:27:22
they are no more uh of a suspect in
00:27:25
in in our eyes than than anyone else at
00:27:28
the present time
00:27:31
who killed sammy wheeler despite all of
00:27:34
the accusations and denials
00:27:36
the fbi has concluded that sami was the
00:27:38
victim of random violence
00:27:41
the local authorities however believe
00:27:43
that sammy wheeler may have known his
00:27:46
killer
00:27:50
[Music]
00:28:13
when we return a mother and father hope
00:28:16
you
00:28:16
can help solve the mysterious
00:28:18
disappearance of their son
00:28:20
gordon page jr
00:28:30
this is gordon page jr at 18 months of
00:28:33
age
00:28:34
he was born autistic and the results
00:28:36
were tragic
00:28:38
not because of the autism but because
00:28:40
gordy was never correctly diagnosed
00:28:43
his father gordon page senior remembers
00:28:49
i guess maybe when he was real young we
00:28:51
thought something was wrong but we
00:28:52
didn't know what
00:28:54
he didn't walk like other kids and run
00:28:56
like other kids
00:28:58
and as he got older you know he'd just
00:29:00
sit there and look around
00:29:01
and didn't even move they always told us
00:29:05
that he was the big boy
00:29:07
he'd just be clumsy maybe but then he'd
00:29:09
outgrow it
00:29:11
he didn't really seem unusual to us
00:29:13
because that was our first child and we
00:29:15
just
00:29:18
we just raised him like a normal child
00:29:20
and he was slow that's what
00:29:21
what we thought he was just slow
00:29:24
now gordon i'm putting five pieces of
00:29:26
fruit on the table you see that one two
00:29:28
three four five how many pieces of fruit
00:29:31
are on the table gordon
00:29:32
five that's very good now i'm gonna take
00:29:35
the two apples away
00:29:36
now look down here how many pieces of
00:29:38
fruit are left on the table gordon
00:29:40
22. now gordon come on to his parents
00:29:42
gordy was a paradox
00:29:44
at times he seemed unable to grasp
00:29:46
simple addition and subtraction
00:29:49
yet gordy had a phenomenal memory
00:29:51
especially when it came to baseball
00:29:54
russ gibson batting average 193
00:29:59
who runs one the baseball cards he must
00:30:02
i would say probably had 25 or 30 000
00:30:05
baseball cards
00:30:06
and he knew the names of every player
00:30:08
all the statistics of the cards
00:30:10
and he would just sit there and memorize
00:30:12
him don money
00:30:13
batting average 223
00:30:17
home runs seven i don't think that gordy
00:30:20
realized that he was slow
00:30:23
in grade school he had a lot of friends
00:30:26
and then as he got older in junior high
00:30:28
his peers started advancing you know
00:30:30
getting ahead of him
00:30:32
and when he needed tutorial help and he
00:30:34
had to go into a special ed
00:30:36
room it bothered him and
00:30:39
he had a hard time in 11th and 12th
00:30:41
grade because all his peers were dating
00:30:43
driving cars
00:30:45
going out and doing things and he was
00:30:46
much just a loner actually you know
00:30:48
because he couldn't keep up with
00:30:50
everybody who's passing him by
00:30:53
gordy worked hard to keep up in june of
00:30:56
1981 he graduated from high school
00:30:59
his parents hoped he would be able to
00:31:01
hold down a job and eventually helped
00:31:03
him apply for one at a local grocery
00:31:05
store
00:31:06
then they held their breath and waited
00:31:10
he said dad i got the job he said
00:31:13
you know it's minimum wage 3.25 cents or
00:31:16
15 cents whatever it was but he said i
00:31:18
start monday isn't that great
00:31:20
and it made me feel so happy and i
00:31:22
dropped him off at work in the morning
00:31:24
and i would hide where he couldn't see
00:31:26
me and
00:31:27
it made me feel proud as a father to see
00:31:30
him working and to see him happy
00:31:33
soon however the store manager reported
00:31:35
that gordy although a conscientious
00:31:37
worker
00:31:38
had trouble communicating with customers
00:31:41
his dad tried to coach gordy at home
00:31:44
using a video camera you're carrying the
00:31:46
groceries to my car now
00:31:47
and i say thank you what do you say no
00:31:50
you say you're welcome
00:31:52
okay let me let's do it again thank you
00:31:55
what do you say if nobody says anything
00:32:00
then you don't just smile at them let's
00:32:02
see that nice gordon page smile come on
00:32:03
it's worth a million dollars let's see
00:32:05
it come on let's see it
00:32:06
oh yeah if you smile at people like that
00:32:09
they'll just love it
00:32:10
gordy's winning smile was not enough
00:32:12
things didn't work out at the grocery
00:32:14
store
00:32:15
and he was let go
00:32:16
[Music]
00:32:19
eventually both linda and gordon page
00:32:21
worried sick about their son's future
00:32:24
met with social medias and asked for
00:32:26
their evaluation of gordy's case
00:32:32
well we're going to recommend that
00:32:35
gordon move to a group home
00:32:38
i've taken care of gordy his whole life
00:32:41
this
00:32:42
is his home i don't think so
00:32:46
you folks won't be around forever
00:32:50
at this point when you die gordon will
00:32:53
be a lost soul
00:32:59
finally we agreed to try it and we went
00:33:02
to visit a group home
00:33:03
and the lady said well he can't stay
00:33:05
here until he goes to see if he needs to
00:33:07
be stabilized on medication in the
00:33:09
hospital
00:33:10
so we did this we finally agreed and
00:33:13
the doctor there put him on ritalin and
00:33:15
valium
00:33:16
and gordon wasn't gordon after that
00:33:27
the combination of ritalin a stimulant
00:33:30
and valium a tranquilizer
00:33:32
plunged gordy into another world of
00:33:34
physical and psychological torment
00:33:38
[Music]
00:33:40
[Applause]
00:33:51
what is it
00:33:52
[Music]
00:33:54
son what i i feel like
00:33:58
cats are scratching inside my brain
00:34:00
[Music]
00:34:02
you feel helpless there's anything you
00:34:04
can do and all i do is call a doctor and
00:34:06
tell him what was going on
00:34:08
he said don't worry about it that's just
00:34:09
typical for his illness
00:34:11
and it takes time for the medication to
00:34:13
work and i said what is his illness
00:34:15
and he said well whatever it is there
00:34:17
are signs of this and signs of that
00:34:19
but nobody would specifically come out
00:34:21
and say this is what's wrong with him
00:34:34
nearly five months gordy and his parents
00:34:36
struggled with the medication
00:34:37
where are we going just for the ride
00:34:43
finally the pages consulted another
00:34:45
doctor who told him that the combination
00:34:47
of ritalin and value was making gory
00:34:49
virtually catatonic
00:34:55
in september of 1989 gordy's family
00:34:57
moved to florida
00:34:58
gordy stayed in michigan the preceding
00:35:01
spring
00:35:02
he had been accepted at a highly
00:35:03
regarded group home in grand rapids
00:35:10
for several months all went well then
00:35:13
a near tragedy
00:35:17
on november 29 1989 a workman left his
00:35:20
truck running in the driveway
00:35:23
gordy heavily medicated couldn't resist
00:35:25
the temptation

00:36:08
oh my god
00:36:11
are you doing look at my car we
00:36:14
interviewed the lady who was a victim in
00:36:16
the
00:36:17
accident she gave a subscription which
00:36:20
fit
00:36:21
on gordon our officers then
00:36:24
received another call a call from one of
00:36:27
our elementary schools
00:36:29
that a person fitting gordon page's
00:36:31
description
00:36:32
was at this elementary school wanting to
00:36:35
teach a class
00:36:37
so we responded to there and at that
00:36:39
time
00:36:40
picked up mr gordon page
00:36:50
do you remember driving that truck over
00:36:52
there yeah
00:36:53
also you do realize you're involved in a
00:36:55
car accident later gordy would tell his
00:36:57
parents
00:36:58
that all he had wanted to do was visit
00:37:00
his younger brother away at college in
00:37:02
texas
00:37:02
gordon page gordy was subsequently
00:37:04
placed in a county hospital
00:37:06
he was evaluated by psychiatric social
00:37:09
worker bill arnold 16785
00:37:11
what he was brought in with label
00:37:13
schizophrenia what are you laughing
00:37:15
about
00:37:16
people their schizophrenic will with
00:37:19
medication
00:37:20
over a couple of week periods usually
00:37:21
they'll start to clear up in their
00:37:23
thinking and their
00:37:23
their behavior will come in line and
00:37:25
they they start getting back more to
00:37:27
normal
00:37:28
uh with gordon that didn't work the more
00:37:30
medication he got the more the
00:37:32
at times he became almost mute and just
00:37:35
withdrew didn't do anything tell me
00:37:38
about the voices that you told the
00:37:39
doctor about gordon
00:37:40
i'm going home for christmas right yeah
00:37:43
i'm sure that we'll be able to get you
00:37:44
out of here by christmas time
00:37:45
after several months of intensive
00:37:47
therapy with gordy bill arnold arrived
00:37:49
at a surprising conclusion
00:37:51
he decided gordy was not schizophrenic
00:37:53
after all
00:37:54
but rather a high-functioning autistic
00:37:59
tell me about your baseball card
00:38:01
collection gordon
00:38:02
woody fry 1966 pirate
00:38:05
rookie of the year pirate is he uh
00:38:09
your favorite player woody fry okay
00:38:13
do you have other dalton jones dalton
00:38:15
jones 1961
00:38:16
batting average 322. once we got him off
00:38:18
all those medications
00:38:20
and we started treating him as possibly
00:38:22
an autistic and working on training
00:38:24
and just giving him some respect he was
00:38:27
a totally different individual
00:38:29
just a totally different individual than
00:38:31
that withdrawn acting out
00:38:33
individual that we saw on medication
00:38:37
and we'll need you to sign this the
00:38:39
pages were confident that gordy had at
00:38:41
last been correctly diagnosed
00:38:43
soon they found a group home in grand
00:38:45
rapids which specialized in autism
00:38:48
but this says i can't visit gordon there
00:38:50
was only one drawback
00:38:52
for two months no visitors were allowed
00:38:55
while gordy adapted to his new
00:38:56
environment
00:38:58
mr page i understand how you want the
00:39:00
very best for your son
00:39:02
and so do we we just want to give him
00:39:04
his best shot at integrating with the
00:39:06
program here
00:39:09
he's waiting for you on may 22nd 1991
00:39:12
gordon page senior was set to return to
00:39:14
florida
00:39:15
that afternoon he shared an emotional
00:39:18
goodbye
00:39:18
with his oldest son
00:39:20
[Music]
00:39:24
hello gordon
00:39:36
how you doing son
00:39:42
we kind of stood there and talked and we
00:39:44
hugged and
00:39:45
talked a little bit more and then we
00:39:48
walked over to the
00:39:49
van and i said everything's going to
00:39:51
work out
00:39:59
[Music]
00:40:06
gordy seemed desperate for his father to
00:40:08
stay
00:40:09
against his better judgment gordon page
00:40:11
did not open the door
00:40:13
it was a decision he would come to
00:40:14
regret
00:40:18
it's very painful now in retrospect i
00:40:22
wish i had allowed him just to get in
00:40:23
and crawl
00:40:24
back and just driven right to florida
00:40:25
and come home but
00:40:27
you don't think of those things and we
00:40:28
didn't know what we were going to be
00:40:29
facing in the future
00:40:32
the future came all too quickly four
00:40:35
days after his father had left
00:40:37
gordy disappeared and orderly made the
00:40:40
discovery during the regular midnight
00:40:42
bed check
00:40:45
around an hour later a local fireman
00:40:47
reported that he had seen someone who
00:40:49
matched gordy's description
00:40:50
hitchhiking in the direction of
00:40:52
interstate 96
00:40:54
an intense police search of the area
00:40:56
turned up no leads

i'm angry i feel bad for gordon i feel
00:41:19
bad as a parent
00:41:20
that i wasn't able to find help earlier
00:41:22
that it had to be when he was 27
00:41:24
28 years of age that we finally found
00:41:27
out what was wrong
00:41:29
we just want our son back we want to be
00:41:31
reunited as a family
00:41:33
