Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 2, Episode 19 - Full Episodes

May 21, 2019 / 46:17

This episode covers the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, the investigation into Sirhan Sirhan, and the mysterious murder of Teresita Basa.

In June 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Eyewitnesses recount the chaos that ensued after Sirhan Sirhan fired eight shots, killing Kennedy and injuring several bystanders. Despite Sirhan's confession, questions remain about the possibility of a second gunman.

The LAPD concluded that Sirhan acted alone, but some researchers and eyewitnesses challenge this claim, citing discrepancies in the bullet trajectories and eyewitness accounts. The episode features interviews with key figures, including former LAPD detectives and eyewitnesses who dispute the official narrative.

Additionally, the episode presents the case of Teresita Basa, a woman murdered in Chicago whose spirit allegedly identified her killer through a friend. The investigation led to Allen Showery, who confessed to the crime after being confronted with evidence.

The episode raises questions about the reliability of eyewitness testimony and the potential for overlooked evidence in high-profile cases.

TL;DR

The episode examines Robert F. Kennedy's assassination and Teresita Basa's murder, questioning the official narratives and exploring eyewitness accounts.

agonizing moments which followed the

00:01:07
of pandemonium had broken loose I mean
00:01:09
everybody was screaming
00:01:12
there were people yelling Kennedy was

shot Kennedy was shot getting in wounds

00:01:19
many people jumped on Seir hand and
00:01:22
hitting him yelling and screaming
00:01:24
somebody was trying to get the gun they
00:01:27
couldn't get the gun out of his hand it
00:01:28
was like frozen in his hand so I was
00:01:32
afraid somebody was gonna snap his back
00:01:34
because by that time the Greer and Rafer
00:01:37
Johnson and sure enough yeah I thought
00:01:39
they just snapping like a matchstick and
00:01:41
Greer finally got possession of the gun
00:01:43
and gave it to Rafer Johnson and it was
00:01:47
agreed you know Johnson was to hold on

00:02:03
sir hun never denied killing Kennedy but
00:02:06
has claimed on several occasions that he
00:02:08
cannot remember the period of time of
00:02:10
the shooting
00:02:12
the final report of the Los Angeles
00:02:14
Police Department definitively states a
00:02:17
sir Han acted alone and fired the fatal
00:02:19
shot throughout history the shockwaves a
00:02:25
political assassination have almost
00:02:27
inevitably given rise to questions of
00:02:29
conspiracy in that regard the murder of
00:02:32
Robert Kennedy is no exception despite
00:02:35
the fact is here hon Sirhan was
00:02:36
apprehended at the scene after firing
00:02:38
eight shots has denied that anyone else
00:02:40
was involved but in this instance there
00:02:43
are researchers and eyewitnesses who
00:02:44
claimed to have evidence which suggests
00:02:46
that his second gun was fired in the
00:02:48
Ambassador Hotel and that it may not
00:02:50
have been seer Hahn who fired the fatal
00:02:53
shot I don't think it's even possible
00:02:55
that seer hand could have shot
00:03:00
senator Kennedy four times at
00:03:02
point-blank range
00:03:03
it's not even possible I at this point
00:03:08
feel that there probably was a second
00:03:11
gun there and that it was fired the
00:03:15
chief of detectives who supervised the
00:03:17
investigation disagrees there's no
00:03:20
question in my mind that Sirhan had
00:03:23
killed Kennedy and they acted alone was
00:03:28
there more than one gun fired that night
00:03:30
just this week the Washington Post
00:03:32
published an article by dan moldea

later five bystanders were also

seriously injured all survived the
00:05:59
attack Sirhan Sirhan was taken into

custody by the Los Angeles Police
00:06:06

00:06:09
organized a 40 member Task Force which

00:06:14
the LAPD declined interview requests for

this broadcast a spokesman stated quote

the reports speak for themselves the

right person was arrested and prosecuted

Detectives with overall responsibility

for the investigation did agree to be

created to not only to investigate the
00:06:39
assassination but any ramification of
00:06:42
that assassination that could possibly
00:06:46
be a conspiracy we didn't know that it
00:06:49
wasn't the time it occurred we had no
00:06:51
idea what the exact facts were once the
00:06:55
pantry area was secured the LAPD
00:06:58
scientific investigation division began
00:07:00
the crime-scene investigation the team
00:07:03
was headed by Officer Dewayne Wolfer a
00:07:05
forensics expert the morning after the
00:07:11
shooting the police discovered sir Hans
00:07:13
notebook at his apartment three weeks
00:07:15
earlier he had written my determination
00:07:18
to eliminate RFK is becoming more the
00:07:22
more
00:07:22
of an unshakable obsession Robert F
00:07:26
Kennedy must be assassinated the case
00:07:29
seemed open-and-shut
00:07:30
the police had motive opportunity and
00:07:33
The Smoking Gun the weapon taken from
00:07:39
sir Hahn was a 22 caliber Iver Johnson
00:07:42
revolver which held a maximum of eight
00:07:44
rounds the LAPD determined that eight
00:07:47
bullets were fired in the pantry and
00:07:48
that all eight came from Sir Hans gun
00:07:53
the official report concluded that the
00:07:56
bullets which struck Kennedy were fired
00:07:57
first from a distance of one to six
00:08:00
inches however the exact sequence in
00:08:02
which the shots were fired is unclear
00:08:06
this is a schematic diagram drawn up by
00:08:09
officer wolf er of the flight paths of
00:08:11
the eight bullets fired by sir Han its
00:08:14
accuracy is central to the question of
00:08:16
whether or not a second gun was fired in
00:08:19
the drawing sir Han has not shown this
00:08:24
is a computer-generated simulation of
00:08:26
the shooting based on the official
00:08:28
diagram was sir Han included sir Han is
00:08:31
depicted by the red figure and Robert
00:08:34
Kennedy by the white the LAPD has
00:08:36
positioned the senator with his right
00:08:38
shoulder turned towards sir Han one
00:08:42
bullet entered the back of senator
00:08:43
Kennedy's head just behind his right ear
00:08:45
this was the fatal shot and according to
00:08:49
police was the first one fired another
00:08:52
penetrated the Senators right rear
00:08:54
shoulder and lodged near his spine a
00:08:57
third bullet entered Kennedy's back at
00:09:00
an upward angle it exited through his
00:09:02
chest and was believed lost somewhere in
00:09:05
the ceiling a fourth pass through the
00:09:08
right shoulder pad of Senator Kennedy's
00:09:10
suit jacket this bullet traveled at an
00:09:12
upward angle and according to the LAPD
00:09:15
then struck Paul Schrade in the forehead
00:09:17
shrade was standing approximately four
00:09:19
feet behind Kennedy at the time I talked
00:09:23
to Paul Schrade Paul said that he had to
00:09:25
be nine feet tall or have his head on
00:09:27
Kennedy shorter in order to be hit with
00:09:29
this bullet but this is key for the LAPD
00:09:31
that this is believed that that that
00:09:33
bullet hit Paul Schrade because if not
00:09:36
then
00:09:36
another bullet in that room which means
00:09:38
there's a second gun so literally people
00:09:40
have to be contortionists in order to
00:09:42
make the bullet flight pass of the LAPD
00:09:44
work according to the official version
00:09:48
four other bullets struck bystanders one
00:09:53
of these bullets ricocheted downward
00:09:55
from the ceiling and hit campaign worker
00:09:57
Elizabeth Evans in the head but medical
00:10:00
records show that the bullet which
00:10:01
struck Evans entered at an upward angle
00:10:03
a bullet ricochets from the ceiling and
00:10:07
comes down through another tile it's
00:10:09
going in a downward direction you can't
00:10:11
have a bullet going in a downward
00:10:12
direction medically enter from any other
00:10:15
direction than downward yet her bullet
00:10:17
entered going upward the autopsy of
00:10:20
Senator Kennedy concluded that the fatal
00:10:23
shot
00:10:23
as well as the two other bullets which
00:10:25
injured Kennedy were fired at an upward
00:10:27
angle from point-blank range an inch to
00:10:30
an inch and a half away these findings
00:10:33
have never been disputed
00:10:35
however the eyewitnesses who testified
00:10:37
at sir Hans trial place the gun muzzle
00:10:40
of foot two three feet away from Kennedy
00:10:43
if that guy bullet which killed Kennedy
00:10:47
that was an inch away from from his head
00:10:50
this bullet didn't come from him from
00:10:53
Suzanne did not come from San because he
00:10:59
never got that close eye witness Karl
00:11:02
Uecker was standing next to Sirhan when
00:11:04
the first shot was fired
00:11:08
euchre was a Maitre D' who's leading
00:11:10
senator Kennedy through the pantry at
00:11:13
the time of the shooting
00:11:15
mr. Kennedy was shaking hands and I was
00:11:20
holding his hand his um was trying to
00:11:23
pull him getting into the clorium
00:11:27
but that time she harmed him behind me
00:11:31
and he was trying to get for me but I
00:11:36
was pushing into him back and then I saw
00:11:41
the gun when he shot him twice kept him
00:11:48
in a headlock and pushed the gun away
00:11:52
and I was holding it ran over the over
00:11:55
the steam table and he kept shooting and
00:12:02
I said again and again and again that
00:12:06
can never cut that close to mr.
00:12:10
Kennedy's head
00:12:14
at the trial euchre testified that sir
00:12:17
Han fired only two shots before he was
00:12:19
forced away from Kennedy however the
00:12:21
official report stated that four shots
00:12:24
were fired before sir Han was restrained
00:12:27
the gun was I'd say approximately
00:12:30
anywhere from one to two feet away from
00:12:33
him at the time of the firing of the
00:12:36
first two shots he was not an inch away
00:12:38
from Kennedy's head because he was
00:12:41
across the room on this ice thing and
00:12:44
the room I don't know the dimensions of
00:12:46
the room but he was not an inch away and
00:12:48
I'm not a coroner but he was not an inch
00:12:52
away it was more than inches it was feet
00:12:56
none of the eyewitnesses who testified
00:12:59
at the trial believed the gun could have
00:13:01
been an inch and a half away from
00:13:02
Kennedy the LAPD determined that all the
00:13:06
eyewitnesses were mistaken about what
00:13:08
they had seen
00:13:09
due to the panic and chaos of the morgue
00:13:12
there is always the need for careful
00:13:15
examination of the eyewitness account of
00:13:18
what happened these people are not in
00:13:22
any sense
00:13:23
making anything up this is what they
00:13:25
believed they saw you put all these
00:13:27
things together it's difficult to
00:13:29
discern under any circumstances officer
00:13:32
Han who is on top of a steam table at
00:13:35
this point at least from three to six
00:13:38
feet away from Kennedy could a shot
00:13:40
senator Kennedy from behind it's an
00:13:43
impossibility my opinion and being close
00:13:47
to the investigation during its entire
00:13:49
life was that the investigation was
00:13:53
thorough that the men who did the
00:13:55
investigation were dedicated and that
00:13:58
the conclusions we drew from their
00:14:01
investigations are accurate the only way
00:14:04
that you can guide what the coroner said
00:14:08
what the LAPD said and it's crime scene
00:14:12
examination what the eyewitnesses say
00:14:15
they saw the only way you can jibe all
00:14:17
of that is that there was a second guy
00:14:19
firing a gun in that pantry that night
00:14:22
[Music]
00:14:25
was there more than one gun in the
00:14:27
pantry that night I witness Richard who
00:14:30
claims of you saw a security - pulled
00:14:33
his gun during the shooting and then
00:14:34
leave the room I noticed that there is a
00:14:38
gentleman in some type of a uniform and
00:14:41
he has a gun that gun is in his hand but
00:14:44
that gun was not aimed at Cyr Han who
00:14:46
was just fired it was in his hand aimed
00:14:50
down not at Kennedy but down toward the
00:14:52
floor the security guard is acknowledged
00:14:57
that he unholstered his weapon that
00:14:58
night but denies that it was fired he
00:15:02
cooperated with police and was cleared
00:15:03
by the LAPD any involvement in the
00:15:06
attack we could not make any connection
00:15:10
between stearin and his guard prior to
00:15:14
that evening none at all
00:15:15
that meant that it would be a phenomenal
00:15:19
leap of logic to think they would both
00:15:21
be in the kitchen at the same time
00:15:23
unless there was a connection so we did
00:15:27
not and do not I do not in any way
00:15:29
believe there's a second gun involved I
00:15:31
can't get a match in 1975 a lawsuit
00:15:39
filed by one of the surviving victims
00:15:41
resulted in a reexamination of the
00:15:43
firearms evidence a panel of experts
00:15:47
compared the three intact bullets
00:15:48
recovered from the victims as well as
00:15:51
test bullets fired from sir Hans
00:15:52
revolver their findings did not rule out
00:15:56
the possibility of a second gunman the
00:16:00
three victim bullets were identified as
00:16:03
having come from the same gun the second
00:16:06
gun has never been identified as firing
00:16:09
those victim bullets and of itself is
00:16:13
not conclusive that the sirhan gun
00:16:16
didn't do the firing so we're left with
00:16:19
the dilemma that we have three victims
00:16:24
struck by bullets from the same gun but
00:16:26
we don't know whose gun it was the LAPD
00:16:29
says that there were there were six
00:16:31
victims who were hit by eight bullets
00:16:32
they say that sear hand made good on all
00:16:35
eight shots they've accounted for
00:16:37
all the bullets he proved one more
00:16:39
bullet there's a second gun in that room
00:16:44
according to dan moldea photographs
00:16:46
taken of the pantry entrance add to the
00:16:48
possibility that more than eight shots
00:16:51
were fired this FBI photograph
00:16:55
identifies two bullet holes in the left
00:16:57
door jamb which are not accounted for in
00:17:00
the official report this is the FBI's

00:17:48
terribly unusual that anything that
00:17:50
looks suspicious at that time would be
00:17:53
recorded that's not unusual at all the
00:17:56
fact that it turned not to be bullets it
00:17:59
was it's just the way it turned out I
00:18:03
saw two bullet holes in a center divider
00:18:07
I saw two bullets in the holes I know
00:18:13
what I saw and the issue obviously is
00:18:18
that others say that they weren't there
00:18:21
it's a supposition in my part that at
00:18:24
the door jambs whatever was in there
00:18:26
that was looked like bullets were
00:18:28
extracted and found not to be bullets I
00:18:30
presume that was done but I don't have
00:18:33
personal knowledge of that I have
00:18:35
serious reservations whether or not any
00:18:39
of Bobby's wounds were inflicted by sear
00:18:43
Hans gun I at this point feel that there
00:18:47
probably was a second gun there and that
00:18:51
it was fired
00:18:53
portions of wooden door frames were
00:18:55
removed from the pantry and booked into
00:18:57
evidence police records state that they
00:19:00
were destroyed on June 27th 1969 two
00:19:04
months after Sirhan's conviction they
00:19:08
were bulky and they asked me if they
00:19:11
could destroy that and I said yes
00:19:14
well somebody at one time asked me if I
00:19:17
had everything anything to do over again
00:19:19
would I change anything and I said sure
00:19:20
I would not release those panels door
00:19:24
jams or whatever you call them because
00:19:26
of the problems that have come out of
00:19:31
that I think that the LAPD you thought
00:19:34
they had an open-and-shut case
00:19:36
and when extra bullets showed up and
00:19:39
when other crime-scene evidence didn't
00:19:41
jibe with the official version I think
00:19:43
the question became one of nothing's
00:19:46
gonna bring it back so why confuse all
00:19:49
of this with the facts and I think that
00:19:51
the case just rested there and it's been
00:19:53
resting there for the past 22 years if
00:19:55
there was someone who has additional
00:19:58
information that would indicate
00:20:00
conspiracy of any kind or that Sirhan
00:20:03
did not shoot Kennedy I want to know
00:20:05
about it and if there is that the case
00:20:08
should be open immediately four days ago
00:20:12
the Washington Post published an article
00:20:14
by dan moldea
00:20:15
containing additional information which
00:20:17
supports a second gun hypothesis we
00:20:20
interviewed modei a second time about
00:20:22
this new evidence since last December
00:20:26
moldea has conducted over 100 separate
00:20:29
interviews with LAPD officers and
00:20:31
officials LA County sheriff's deputies
00:20:33
and city fire marshals some of them are
00:20:36
now retired and many were present at the
00:20:38
crime scene investigation these
00:20:41
interviews are authentic they are on the
00:20:44
record and many of them are on tape and
00:20:46
what I did was I basically asked these
00:20:48
officers to questions what did you do
00:20:51
that night and what did you see these
00:20:55
officers had no idea of the significance
00:20:57
of what they were telling me they were
00:21:00
giving me direct responses to my direct
00:21:02
questions
00:21:04
and about 20 of the people I talked to
00:21:07
had clearly identified bullets bullet
00:21:11
fragments or bullet holes at the crime
00:21:13
scene itself in the kitchen pantry
00:21:15
according to mull dia the bullet holes
00:21:18
and fragments that were described by
00:21:19
some interview subjects correspond with
00:21:21
the FBI photographs taken at the crime
00:21:24
scene during his interview moldea
00:21:27
referred to transcripts of his
00:21:28
conversations with officials I have a
00:21:32
sheriff's deputy who says quote I
00:21:34
remember one person trying to take a
00:21:36
bullet out of the wall with a knife a
00:21:37
silver knife for a souvenir and quote I
00:21:40
have one of the photographers saying
00:21:42
quote I remember taking lots of pictures
00:21:44
of bullet holes six or seven in quote
00:21:46
and when I asked him how sure he was
00:21:49
that these were bullet holes
00:21:50
he was defiant with me and he said quote
00:21:52
a bullet hole looks like a bullet hole
00:21:54
if you photographed enough of them end
00:21:56
quote a detective who was there told me
00:21:59
that he had seen quote quite a few
00:22:01
bullet holes and actually identified the
00:22:04
location of one bullet in the wall which
00:22:06
corresponded with an FBI photograph
00:22:08
another detective who was there that
00:22:10
night told me about a bullet hole he had
00:22:12
seen in the center divider at the crime
00:22:14
scene between two swinging doors another
00:22:17
LAPD sergeant told me quote as I was
00:22:20
making my rounds some bullet holes were
00:22:21
pointed out to me in a doorframe end
00:22:23
quote and then he added that during a
00:22:25
subsequent tour through the pantry quote
00:22:28
one of the investigators pointed to a
00:22:30
hole in a doorframe and said quote we
00:22:32
just pulled a bullet out of here and
00:22:34
quote and then one crime-scene
00:22:37
investigator told me that he'd observed
00:22:39
one of his supervisors removed two 22
00:22:43
caliber bullets from the center divider
00:22:44
itself now according to the Los Angeles
00:22:48
Police Department's official reports
00:22:50
there should have been no bullet damage
00:22:52
in the walls and the door frames at the
00:22:55
crime scene that night all of Seir hands
00:22:58
bullets have been accounted for now what
00:23:01
we have is a situation where the Los
00:23:03
Angeles Police Department officers and
00:23:06
top officials are now corroborating with
00:23:08
the FBI indicated in its photographs and
00:23:10
accompanied captions back in 1968 that
00:23:13
there were additional bullets and bullet
00:23:15
holes at the crime scene itself
00:23:17
now if they are right then there is a
00:23:21
second gun in that room that was fired
00:23:22
and I think the only rate to resolve
00:23:25
these questions is to simply reopen the
00:23:29
case after publication of The Washington
00:23:33
Post article we contacted the Los
00:23:35
Angeles Police Department for their
00:23:37
response whatever that reporter says is
00:23:43
irrelevant as far as we are concerned we
00:23:45
won't debate it we won't discuss it the
00:23:48
investigation and its results reflect
00:23:51
what our official position is and that
00:23:54
is that the murderer of Senator Kennedy
00:23:57
was arrested and successfully prosecuted
00:23:59
and continues to serve time final
00:24:04
services for robert Francis Kennedy were
00:24:06
held on June 8 1968 at st. Patrick's
00:24:10
Cathedral in New York City and were
00:24:12
televised live to the nation
00:24:15
my brother need not be idealized or
00:24:19
enlarged and death beyond but he wasn't
00:24:22
life to be remembered simply as a good
00:24:25
and decent man
00:24:26
[Music]
00:24:27
we saw wrong and tried to write it saw
00:24:32
suffering and tried to heal it saw a war
00:24:35
and tried to stop it those of us who
00:24:40
loved him and who take him to his rest
00:24:43
today pray that what he was to us and
00:24:48
what he wished for others was someday
00:24:50
come to pass for all the world 22 years
00:24:54
of pasts and Senator Robert Kennedy was
00:24:56
laid to rest but the events surrounding
00:24:58
his death are still at issue was there a
00:25:02
second gun in the Ambassador Hotel that
00:25:04
night did the authorities overlook
00:25:07
crucial evidence in the understandable
00:25:09
rush to convict sirhan sirhan and
00:25:12
finally if a second gun was fired who
00:25:16
pulled the trigger
00:25:24

00:25:33
February 21st 1977 at approximately 9:00
00:25:37
p.m. on a cold winter night Chicago
00:25:39
firefighters responded to a call from a
00:25:42
lakefront residential building when the
00:25:45
firemen arrived they found that the
00:25:46
blaze was confined to an upper floor
00:25:48
apartment
00:25:51
[Music]
00:25:59
inside the mattress in the middle of the
00:26:02
living room floor was engulfed in flame
00:26:08
[Music]
00:26:12
and initially the apartment seemed
00:26:14
unoccupied but soon the firemen made a
00:26:17
grim discovery
00:26:21
beneath a mattress they found the body
00:26:23
of a woman named Teresita basu she had
00:26:26
been stabbed in the chest it also
00:26:28
appeared that she had been raped and the
00:26:31
fire set in an attempt to cover up the
00:26:33
murder the police were bewildered by
00:26:38
this brutal crime the official autopsy
00:26:41
revealed the Teresita basa had not been
00:26:43
raped there was no apparent motive and
00:26:46
little physical evidence the
00:26:47
investigation quickly reached a dead end
00:26:49
the nearly six months later police were
00:26:52
startled by a lead as mystifying as a
00:26:54
crime itself a Chicago couple claimed
00:26:57
the victim Teresita basa had named her
00:27:00
own killer after she was murdered
00:27:02
speaking to them from beyond the grave
00:27:07
Teresita basser had moved to the United
00:27:10
States from the Philippines in the 1960s
00:27:13
she worked as a respiratory therapist at
00:27:16
a Chicago hospital
00:27:18
[Music]
00:27:22
coworkers describe Teresita as a
00:27:24
dedicated professional who gave all her
00:27:26
time and energy to her patients she
00:27:29
seemed to have absolutely no enemies
00:27:30
until the night of February 21st
00:27:34
[Music]
00:27:40
smoke and fire damage had destroyed all
00:27:42
fingerprints and nothing seemed to be
00:27:44
missing from teresita's apartment better
00:27:47
in Chicago detective Joseph dahulu was
00:27:49
totally baffled the only real piece of
00:27:56
evidence we found was a memo indicating
00:27:59
that she was expecting to obtain some
00:28:01
theater tickets for a subject by name of
00:28:04
a s who might have been expected at the
00:28:08
apartment on that night
00:28:10
Jose tahula desperately grasped at any
00:28:13
straw that held out hope of solving the
00:28:15
case five and a half months after the
00:28:17
murder he responded to a strange call
00:28:20
that would take his investigation into
00:28:21
the realm of the paranormal dr. mortis a
00:28:29
Filipino physician had heard about
00:28:31
Teresita basa through his wife the two
00:28:34
women had worked together at the
00:28:35
hospital the doctor and his wife have
00:28:38
requested anonymity we will call them
00:28:41
Enrico and Alicia border they would tell
00:28:44
Stella an unbelievable but compelling
00:28:47
story have you ever had any dealings
00:28:50
with possession or the occult being a
00:28:54
police officer I've run into a lot of
00:28:56
strange things I've always tried to keep
00:28:58
an open mind about it it was a funny
00:29:00
situation being a policeman you can tell
00:29:03
when somebody sincere and when they
00:29:05
firmly believe they're giving you good
00:29:07
information I could tell it that he
00:29:10
believed what he was telling me was the
00:29:12
truth what I'm about to tell you may
00:29:14
sound bizarre
00:29:16
you see I worked with the Lake Teresita
00:29:19
we were both respiratory therapists at
00:29:21
the hospital Alicia told detectives to
00:29:24
hula of a strange series of events that
00:29:26
took place after teresita's death late
00:29:29
one night after working a long shift
00:29:31
Alicia had gone to a hospital lounge for
00:29:34
a short nap she said that seconds after
00:29:37
she closed her eyes she felt a ghostly
00:29:39
presence in the room
00:29:40
it was Teresita pasa
00:29:43
[Music]
00:29:45
at first I thought I was dreaming I
00:29:48
could not believe my eyes but she is
00:29:52
looking at me
00:29:53
staring at me I did not know what to do
00:29:58
I was so frightened I pray a couple of
00:30:03
weeks after Alicia had seen Teresita the
00:30:06
boarders went out to tell of a second
00:30:08
experience two weeks later this time at
00:30:11
their home purchase
00:30:13
that night Alicia had gone to bed early
00:30:16
complaining of extreme fatigue her
00:30:19
husband had gone into the bedroom to
00:30:20
check on her
00:30:22
dr. Bordeaux said he asked her if she
00:30:24
was alright and he says her voice was
00:30:27
different and attempting to get his wife
00:30:31
to talk more he asked who are you he was
00:30:38
confused cuz he did not know Teresita
00:30:40
pasa at the time you must go to the
00:30:44
police
00:30:46
the police cannot find my killer
00:30:51
Jotham his name is Alan showery tell
00:30:55
them
00:30:57
upon listening dis I really picked up
00:30:59
now yes finally no hue yes and I asked
00:31:03
them who'd did he know who L and showery
00:31:05
was and he indicated from the from the
00:31:08
voice I'm Teresita pasa that Ellen Shari
00:31:11
was an orderly that worked at the
00:31:12
hospital with both his wife and Teresita
00:31:15
bossom he said the first session only
00:31:19
lasted about 30 minutes and then at the
00:31:21
end his wife woke up he asked her if she
00:31:24
knew what happened she said she didn't
00:31:26
and then he sort of put it in the back
00:31:28
of his mind and didn't act on it he said
00:31:33
then there was a second session where
00:31:37
the voice again possessed his wife and
00:31:40
at this time the voice became more
00:31:42
insistent he said he could not do
00:31:53
anything to really help her and the
00:31:54
police couldn't do anything that they
00:31:56
would need evidence and at this point
00:32:01
the voice indicated that she had some
00:32:04
evidence form that it was her jury
00:32:08
[Music]
00:32:15
first thought that came into - how can I
00:32:18
put this on an official police report
00:32:19
but at this point we began a background
00:32:23
check on Allen showery besides knowing
00:32:26
Teresita basa at the hospital he lived a
00:32:29
short distance from her if either of you
00:32:32
recall
00:32:33
Teresita bas i ever mentioned that allen
00:32:35
showery was going to go over to her
00:32:36
apartment we've also learned from
00:32:38
co-workers at the hospital that Allen
00:32:41
showery was expected over an teresita's
00:32:44
apartment that night to repair her
00:32:46
television this was probably the best
00:32:52
clue that we had putting him on the
00:32:54
scene at the approximate time of the
00:32:56
murder detectives tahula brought allen
00:33:01
showery in for questioning showery
00:33:08
admitted he had gone to teresita's
00:33:10
apartment that night to repair her
00:33:11
television I was there but I was just
00:33:15
there to fix the television and I had my
00:33:17
tools that I had the right claimed he
00:33:18
was unable to fix the set and returned
00:33:20
to the apartment he shared with his
00:33:22
girlfriend we decided to contact the
00:33:28
girlfriend and ask her if Allen had
00:33:30
given her any jewelry recently within
00:33:32
the last several months or weeks so when
00:33:36
we contacted her she indicated yes he
00:33:39
had Allen Sherry's girlfriend agreed to
00:33:44
let Teresita boss's relatives and
00:33:46
friends
00:33:46
inspect the jewelry Allen had given work
00:33:48
see if there's anything you can
00:33:50
recognize her looks familiar to you the
00:33:53
family members immediately recognized a
00:33:56
large green piece of jade and several
00:33:59
other distinctive pieces of jewelry is
00:34:01
there any other piece here look familiar
00:34:04
the ring that's teresita's ring ring on
00:34:08
her finger
00:34:09
yeah she was wearing it the last time I
00:34:10
saw Helen give you their ring yesterday
00:34:14
how long ago did he give it to you I
00:34:18
don't know it was about three months ago
00:34:28
it's all over Ellen Teresita boss's
00:34:33
family just identified the jury now I
00:34:35
want to know what happened
00:34:37
confronted with this evidence shall we
00:34:39
made a full confession their name would
00:34:41
have left for our apartment
00:34:43
Alan said that yes he had gone over
00:34:45
there to work on Teresita boss's
00:34:48
television set however he returned home
00:34:51
and on the way back formulated this plan
00:34:55
to murder and Rob Teresita
00:34:59
[Music]
00:35:00
[Applause]
00:35:00
[Music]
00:35:03
Allen returned to the apartment and went
00:35:07
Teresita let him in and she turned her
00:35:09
back to block the door
00:35:11
he said he quickly moved up behind her
00:35:13
and placed a chokehold on her neck
00:35:15
holding it until she stopped struggling
00:35:18
he then dragged her body into the living
00:35:21
room where he disrobed her to make it
00:35:24
look like it was a rape robbery type of
00:35:28
scene and then went into the bedroom and
00:35:34
obtained the mattress off her bed
00:35:36
placing it over the body and setting the
00:35:40
top of the mattress on fire
00:35:41
[Music]
00:35:52
planted defies belief is as somehow
00:35:55
possible the Teresita basa could have
00:35:57
spoken through Alicia border to catch
00:35:59
her own killer one thing is certain
00:36:02
without the information Alicia provided
00:36:04
police would never have known the
00:36:06
jewelry was missing an Allen showery
00:36:08
would never have been arrested to this
00:36:12
day and not quite sure if Teresita came
00:36:15
back it's one of those bizarre incidents
00:36:21
that you don't know was true or not true
00:36:28
despite his confession Allen sherry pled
00:36:31
not guilty to a charge of murder but
00:36:33
when a mistrial was declared because of
00:36:34
a hung jury showery suddenly reversed
00:36:37
himself and admitted his guilt he was
00:36:39
sentenced to 14 years in prison
00:36:42

00:36:57
in the summer of 1967 Jim Bukowski
00:37:01
married his high school sweetheart
00:37:02
Dolores
00:37:04
a week later he would ship to Vietnam on
00:37:08
August 29th 1968 four months into his
00:37:11
tour of duty
00:37:12
Jim's platoon was overrun by a large
00:37:15
contingent of North Vietnamese troops
00:37:17
they blew us to smithereens I went
00:37:20
flying through the air I landed 30 feet
00:37:23
down the hill I picked up my leg that
00:37:27
was blown off and I crawled back up to
00:37:29
you my first conscious memory was
00:37:36
looking up and seeing this blonde lady
00:37:40
helping me captain Lin sharp
00:37:47
hi Jim how you doing with captain sharps
00:37:50
help Jim began to recover from his
00:37:52
physical wounds but the emotional trauma
00:37:54
still tormented so you're gonna write
00:37:59
your wife by your leg know how you were
00:38:03
not allowed to leave the mass unit until
00:38:06
you wrote a letter to your wife I didn't
00:38:10
have the courage to write it she forced
00:38:15
me to do it and then I didn't know she
00:38:22
had sent a letter and a picture to my
00:38:25
wife with it I don't think that I would
00:38:30
have came back to my wife without
00:38:33
captain sharp I would very much like to
00:38:37
thank her for what she did for me

and all the other guys before this
00:38:50
segment even aired
00:38:51
Linda sharp saw a promotional
00:38:53
announcement for Jim story on unsolved
00:38:55
mysteries she immediately called our
00:38:57
telecentre two weeks later she and Jim
00:39:00
were reunited
00:39:02
[Music]
00:39:12
you might open that door I was elated
00:39:15
all I want to do is give her a great big
00:39:17
hug and just hug her and thank her and
00:39:21
kiss her on the cheek and just uh just
00:39:25
try to show my appreciation I feel very
00:39:27
blessed to be here to actually see him
00:39:31
and talk with him and and hear his
00:39:35
versions of what went on because
00:39:37
sometimes what-what nurses don't even
00:39:41
don't realize that we have an impact on
00:39:43
patients lives and I certainly didn't
00:39:45
realize the impact I had on his life at
00:39:48
all over the years I've thought about
00:39:53
about Jim and Dolores and wondered how
00:39:56
they were doing and if they were still
00:39:58
together and seeing this show on TV and
00:40:01
seeing them in this segment was just the
00:40:03
best news that just made it all
00:40:06
worthwhile it really pulled things
00:40:07
together for me and it it reinforced
00:40:09
that that what I did over there was
00:40:11
important when Cory moments after
00:40:17
arriving Linda received an unexpected
00:40:19
gift a portrait of a vietnam nurse jim
00:40:23
had framed for her
00:40:25
think I had just made up for you then I
00:40:27
[ __ ] you like this

00:40:32
when he gave me the the plaque it was
00:40:34
just such a special moment it made this
00:40:38
day very very special something that is
00:40:42
likely the culmination of a nursing
00:40:44
career to be to be thanked in such a
00:40:50
special way is very memorable something
00:40:52
I'll never forget this meeting with
00:40:57
Linda represents in my healing the final
00:41:03
step knowing tonight in my own mind
00:41:07
mentally physically and the way I feel
00:41:09
right now
00:41:10
I'm alright I finally beat battle we
00:41:14
lost a few battles but I've won the war
00:41:17
let me rephrase that
00:41:18
I have won the war

survived the vicious attack we assess
00:43:47
the scene immediately we canvass the
00:43:49
neighborhood and thank God that we were
00:43:52
able to come up with a couple of
00:43:53
witnesses that were able to give us some
00:43:55
pretty decent composites at around 8:15
00:44:00
that morning Stephanie's brother Steve
00:44:03
had stopped by the bowling alley for a
00:44:05
few minutes on his way to school I saw
00:44:08
to his back gentleman walking from the
00:44:10
back of the building towards the front
00:44:12
the older gentleman handed the younger
00:44:14
gentleman a small case the older
00:44:17
gentleman squats down and looks right at
00:44:20
me as I'm driving towards them I took
00:44:22
notice of what they were wearing their
00:44:24
descriptions hair color skin eyes
00:44:29
based on Steve's testimony and that of
00:44:32
other witnesses the police drew up these

composites of The Killers suspect number
00:44:38
one is approximately 29 to 30 years old
00:44:41
