Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 2, Episode 22

March 09, 2017 / 42:50

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers three intriguing cases: the suspicious death of Keith Warren in Maryland, the disappearance of Scott Enard's photographs from the Robert Kennedy assassination, and the vanishing of Cindy Song from Penn State University.

In Silver Spring, Maryland, 19-year-old Keith Warren was found hanging from a tree, with his death initially ruled a suicide. His mother, Mary Kooie, began to question this conclusion when she discovered discrepancies in the clothing he wore and the circumstances surrounding his death. After an autopsy revealed toxic chemicals in his body, the case raised more questions than answers.

Scott Enard was a young photographer who captured images during the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968. Enard claims he took three rolls of film that night, but only one roll was returned to him, with authorities stating the others were destroyed. Enard's pursuit of the missing photographs led to a lawsuit against the LAPD, which revealed further complications and suspicions regarding the handling of evidence.

The episode also highlights the case of Cindy Song, a college student who disappeared after a Halloween party in 2001. Despite a search of her apartment revealing no signs of struggle, her whereabouts remain unknown. Eyewitness accounts of a woman matching her description crying for help add to the mystery surrounding her case.

Next on Unsolved
00:00:07
Mysteries. In a Maryland suburb, a young
00:00:10
man is found hanging from a tree. His
00:00:13
death was ruled a suicide. But why was
00:00:16
he wearing someone else's
00:00:19
clothes in 1968? A young photographer
00:00:23
was taking pictures at the exact moment
00:00:25
Senator Robert Kennedy was shot. Those
00:00:29
pictures may hold the key to what
00:00:31
happened that night, but they've
00:00:33
disappeared. A notorious murder case
00:00:36

the ghost of the beautiful

00:01:38
Silver Spring,
00:01:41
Maryland. The 911 call comes in just
00:01:44
before 200
00:01:45
p.m. 19-year-old Keith Warren is dead.
00:01:51
Keith was a well-liked, dependable young
00:01:53
man who was just one month away from
00:01:55
starting
00:01:59
college. That will never happen
00:02:02
now. Keith was found in a wooded area
00:02:06
behind a townhouse where he lived with
00:02:08
his mother and sister. He was hanging by
00:02:11
the neck from a small tree that was bent
00:02:14
double with his weight. The elaborate
00:02:17
arrangement of the hanging rope would
00:02:19
raise questions later. The cord was
00:02:22
anchored around the base of a large
00:02:25
tree. It extended some 25 ft to a small
00:02:29
sapling. It circled the sapling's trunk
00:02:32
and then arched up through a fork
00:02:34
several feet off the ground.
00:02:38
After a very brief visual inspection,
00:02:41
the medical examiner determined that
00:02:43
Keith committed
00:02:45
suicide. No autopsy was ordered and the
00:02:48
body was sent to a funeral home for
00:02:52
inbalming. Surprisingly, several hours
00:02:55
passed before Keith's mother was told of
00:02:58
her son's death.
00:03:00
I didn't realize at the time that
00:03:03
Keith's body was not at a morg. There
00:03:05
had been no investigation and his body
00:03:08
had been discovered maybe five or six
00:03:10
hours
00:03:11
earlier. I didn't know at the time the
00:03:13
officer had chosen a funeral
00:03:18
home. A few days later, Mary Kooie
00:03:21
received her son's personal effects,
00:03:24
some audio tapes, a jacket, and his
00:03:27
trademark brown boots.
00:03:30
I saw the boots and that's when I knew
00:03:32
it was all over. The boots that was
00:03:35
Keith
00:03:39
and that was it.
00:03:45
At first, Mary had accepted that her son
00:03:48
committed suicide, but then she began to
00:03:51
have doubts. The reason?
00:03:55
Well, Mary heard that suspicious
00:03:57
characters had been looking for Keith
00:03:59
just a week before he died.
00:04:02
Hey yo, dude. Seen Keith Warren around?
00:04:06
It was mainly black males that were in
00:04:07
the car. Some friends looking for him.
00:04:09
Seen him around. Keith did not associate
00:04:11
much with black males. Most of his
00:04:13
friends were white males. So, I thought
00:04:15
that was pretty strange. And after I
00:04:16
told them that I haven't I hadn't seen
00:04:18
Keith, they left. They weren't from the
00:04:21
neighborhood or our school area. So, I
00:04:23
kind of kind of figured why would they
00:04:24
be looking for Keith? But I, you know,
00:04:26
no one had an answer for me.
00:04:28
Several days later, Rodney Kendall had
00:04:32
another odd encounter. This time with a
00:04:34
high school acquaintance of Keith named
00:04:36
Mark Finley. Rodney, have you seen
00:04:39
Keith? No, man. What's up? I I need to
00:04:41
find him. He seemed pretty urgent. I
00:04:44
thought it was pretty strange because he
00:04:45
act like he needed to find Keith very
00:04:46
quickly. I told him I didn't know where
00:04:48
Keith was and he left.
00:04:52
Some weeks after Keith's death, his
00:04:54
mother asked Rodney to show her the tree
00:04:57
where Keith's body was
00:04:59
found. When we got there, I looked
00:05:02
around and um couldn't find the
00:05:07
tree. The tree had been cut down. It was
00:05:10
just a stump
00:05:13
left. I called the police and they're
00:05:17
very rude. Yeah, we cut it down. And
00:05:20
what do you want us to do about it?
00:05:22
Police said they needed to cut the tree
00:05:24
down so they could hold it as
00:05:27
evidence, but this seems strange since
00:05:30
they had already closed the
00:05:33
case. Keith's mother no longer trusted
00:05:36
what the police said. She launched a
00:05:39
letterw writing campaign aimed at state
00:05:41
and federal officials. But for six long
00:05:44
years, Mary Kooie hit a stone wall
00:05:47
everywhere she
00:05:53
turned. Then on Keith's birthday, the
00:05:57
day he would have turned 25, Mary found
00:06:00
a plain manila envelope at her doorstep.
00:06:04
Oh, Sherry. Oh my god.
00:06:07
And Sherry came up and she saw the
00:06:09
pictures scattered and she picked them
00:06:11
up and then she says, "Oh my god, this
00:06:13
is Keith." There were five pictures in
00:06:16
all. Each showed a different view of
00:06:20
Keith hanging by his
00:06:22
neck. Mary forced herself to look and in
00:06:25
the process found a glaring discrepancy.
00:06:30
His clothing, it didn't fit him. That's
00:06:33
when we started to realize he was
00:06:35
wearing somebody else's clothing, but
00:06:38
the real eye catcher was that he was
00:06:40
wearing white sneakers. And those white
00:06:43
tennis shoes he did not own. He did not
00:06:46
own a pair of white tennis shoes.
00:06:49
The only items of clothing that police
00:06:51
returned to the family were Keith's
00:06:53
jacket and brown boots. Neither was
00:06:56
shown in the photographs, although
00:06:58
authorities said that they had found
00:07:00
them near Keith's body.
00:07:03
I didn't feel that the police were my
00:07:05
friends at all. I was advised to go to a
00:07:08
local investigator and find out the
00:07:11
source of the photos.
00:07:13
Mary hired private detective Joe
00:07:16
Alersia.
00:07:17
The police department conceded that they
00:07:19
were copies of original police photos,
00:07:22
but they had no idea where they came
00:07:24
from. None whatsoever. They were
00:07:25
questioned numerous times.
00:07:28
He noticed several leaves on the back of
00:07:30
Keith's shirt.
00:07:33
This suggested Keith had been lying on
00:07:35
the ground and was hoisted into a
00:07:38
hanging position by someone
00:07:41
else. Alertio says that his theory is
00:07:44
supported by the complex path of the
00:07:46
rope found at the scene. The
00:07:49
perpetrators noticed that the tree was
00:07:51
small and wouldn't hold the body.
00:07:53
Therefore, they needed some security by
00:07:56
tying around a big tree here.
00:07:58
No one seems to know whose clothing
00:08:01
Keith Warren is wearing in those
00:08:02
photographs and whether or not Keith
00:08:04
Warren was hanged or whether or not he
00:08:06
committed suicide.
00:08:08
Finally, Keith's family had his body
00:08:10
exumed for an autopsy and the results
00:08:14
were shocking.
00:08:16
I believe that Keith Warren's death
00:08:18
being listed as suicide is medically not
00:08:21
supportable.
00:08:23
Tests on Keith's body showed deadly
00:08:25
levels of several powerful chemicals
00:08:28
that are usually found in glue and
00:08:31
solvents. The levels found in Keith's
00:08:33
body were enough to kill
00:08:35
them. These substances can get in there
00:08:39
by inhalation or they can be actually be
00:08:41
taken in by mouth. Maryland's chief
00:08:44
medical examiner reviewed the report and
00:08:47
claimed the toxic chemicals were part of
00:08:49
the inbalming process. Dr. Mahalakus
00:08:52
disagrees.
00:08:55
The substances found in Keith Warren's
00:08:57
body could not have been introduced by
00:08:59
the inbombing fluid because the embomber
00:09:02
in his report never mentioned using any
00:09:04
of those substances. Secondly, the
00:09:06
distribution of the key substance
00:09:09
tricloreththane is more consistent with
00:09:11
inhalation. And third, they were found
00:09:14
at two additional substances which are
00:09:16
totally unrelated to any inbombing
00:09:18
solution.
00:09:21
But if the chemicals were not in the
00:09:23
inbalming fluid, where did they come
00:09:26
from?
00:09:27
He could have been at a party where
00:09:29
there's some drugs involved and he
00:09:30
accidentally killed himself and they
00:09:33
were afraid and then they decided to
00:09:34
take and hang and make it look like a
00:09:36
suicide or he could have been attacked
00:09:38
from the back and that particular
00:09:40
chemical so potent that one chemist said
00:09:43
that he was dead before he hit the
00:09:45
ground.
00:09:46
He couldn't have done this and placed
00:09:48
himself on the tree. That's the bottom
00:09:51
line. He could not have taken these
00:09:54
chemicals and then hung
00:09:57
himself. In a final disturbing twist,
00:10:01
the one person who might know what
00:10:03
happened to Keith also turned up dead
00:10:05
under suspicious
00:10:08
circumstances. Mark Finley was one of
00:10:10
those who came looking for Keith a few
00:10:12
days before he died. I I need to find
00:10:14
him.
00:10:16
6 years later, when Mary received the
00:10:19
photographs, a note attached to one
00:10:21
said, "Don't worry, Mark Finley will be
00:10:25
next."
00:10:26
Mark called my residence, left a message
00:10:29
on my answer machine. Miss Warren, this
00:10:33
is Mark Finley. Um, I got your message,
00:10:37
and I will be by to see you. I do
00:10:41
remember the specific words were, "I
00:10:42
need to unload."
00:10:46
Just one month later, Mark Finley was
00:10:49
dead. According to police, Finley died
00:10:52
accidentally when he struck a curb and
00:10:54
was thrown from his bike.
00:10:57
The original ambulance crew said the
00:11:01
damage to Mr. Finley didn't fit the
00:11:04
accident itself.
00:11:06
the the damage in his face. It was
00:11:08
looked like somebody either hit him with
00:11:10
a car, he was waiting for him with a
00:11:11
baseball bat and hit him with a baseball
00:11:13
bat. Mark Finley made a statement at a
00:11:15
party saying that Keith didn't kill
00:11:17
himself. I helped hang him in the tree.
00:11:20
It just seemed kind of strange that he
00:11:22
happened to expire when he had made that
00:11:24
statement.
00:11:28
When asked about this case, the
00:11:30
authorities have a standard answer. This
00:11:33
case is closed.
00:11:36
We're still being stonewalled and we're
00:11:38
still being fought and that's
00:11:40
incredible. I can't I can't understand
00:11:43
that. What What What is What is it that
00:11:47
the system does not want me to know
00:11:49
about my child's life or death?
00:11:53
The Warren family is offering a $5,000
00:11:56
reward for information about this case.
00:12:00
If you have any information about what
00:12:02
happened to Keith Warren, please log on
00:12:05
to our website at
00:12:10
unsolved.com. Next, when Bobby Kennedy
00:12:13
was shot in 1968, this man was there
00:12:16
taking pictures, but those pictures have
00:12:20
mysteriously disappeared. Why?
00:12:33
Los Angeles, California.
00:12:36
I would hope I would hope not. June 5th,
00:12:39
1968. Senator Robert F. Kennedy
00:12:42
addresses a room full of supporters
00:12:44
celebrating his victory in the
00:12:46
California presidential primary. My
00:12:49
thanks to all of you. And now it's on to
00:12:51
Chicago and let's win
00:12:53
there. Stay
00:12:56
back. Stand back.
00:12:59
Within 20 minutes, the senator is
00:13:01
fatally wounded in the hotel kitchen
00:13:04
pantry. The accused assassin is a young
00:13:07
Palestinian named Sir Han Sirhan.
00:13:12
Since the day of the assassination,
00:13:15
people have questioned whether Sir Han
00:13:17
acted alone or whether a second gunman
00:13:20
was involved.
00:13:22
The debate has been fueled by the belief
00:13:25
that there was no visual record, not one
00:13:28
photograph of the precise moment the
00:13:30
senator was gunned
00:13:34
down. But now that assumption has been
00:13:39
challenged. There is an audio recording
00:13:42
from a radio reporter and there are my
00:13:44
black and white photographs and that's
00:13:45
it.
00:13:47
This could be a photograph of Scott
00:13:49
Enard taken in the pantry of the
00:13:52
Ambassador Hotel. Scott claims at the
00:13:55
instant Senator Kennedy was shot, he was
00:13:58
there taking
00:14:00
pictures. But where are those photos?
00:14:04
Scott says that he shot three rows of
00:14:06
film that night. The authorities,
00:14:08
however, deny that two of those roles
00:14:11
ever
00:14:12
existed. When Senator Kennedy gave his
00:14:15
victory speech, 15-year-old Scott Enard
00:14:18
was just a few feet from the stage,
00:14:21
shooting photographs for his high school
00:14:24
newspaper. These are some of Scott's
00:14:27
pictures. He took his first role of film
00:14:30
before Kennedy at the podium. Scott says
00:14:34
he loaded a second role just as the
00:14:36
senator began to speak. Let's finish
00:14:38
this very brief little
00:14:41
talk and we'll make it. As the speech
00:14:43
concluded, Scott joined the crowd that
00:14:45
followed Kennedy from the stage. Have
00:14:48
been waiting for him. After leaving the
00:14:50
ballroom, Senator Kennedy headed down a
00:14:52
corridor which led to the pantry. There
00:14:55
he stopped to shake hands with kitchen
00:14:57
workers. When he stopped, I was about
00:15:00
10, 12 feet behind him. There was an
00:15:02
open wedge which had been made by the
00:15:04
two people on either side of him so I
00:15:06
had a clear view of him. It's at this
00:15:08
point that I brought my camera up and
00:15:10
started taking pictures. Then
00:15:12
suddenly
00:15:14
gunshots. Stand back. Now I was behind
00:15:18
Robert F. Kennedy. Siran Sirhan was in
00:15:21
front of Kennedy. So I did not see
00:15:22
Sirhan. All I saw was Kennedy twist and
00:15:25
fall. Senator Kennedy has been shot. I
00:15:29
moved back and jumped up on a steam
00:15:31
table and u I took some pictures over
00:15:34
where the dog pile on Siran was taking
00:15:36
place. Uh his hand was sticking out with
00:15:38
the gun in it, but I couldn't really see
00:15:40
what was taking place there cuz so many
00:15:42
people had crowded in at that point. Is
00:15:45
there a doctor in the Everybody please
00:15:47
stay back, please. A few minutes later,
00:15:49
Scott went back to the ballroom where
00:15:51
the large crowd was reacting with shock
00:15:53
and horror. At that time, Scott says he
00:15:56
loaded and clicked off his third roll of
00:16:04
film. I noticed uh two men in suits.
00:16:08
They were looking at me rather
00:16:10
strangely, and I moved a few steps and
00:16:12
they moved a few steps. And not knowing
00:16:15
who's a terrorist, who's an assassin,
00:16:17
and and who's the police, um I took off.
00:16:22
[Music]
00:16:29
Wait, wait. Hold on. Hold on. Okay,
00:16:31
okay, okay, okay. Where's the camera?
00:16:34
They went through my pockets and took
00:16:35
all three rolls of the film. Uh, they
00:16:38
took uh camera, of course, and it's at
00:16:41
that point I realized these are
00:16:42
detectives and I'm with the good guys.
00:16:46
At around 3:00 a.m., Scott was taken to
00:16:49
a police station in downtown Los
00:16:52
Angeles. Well, I'm not exactly sure.
00:16:54
Where were you, Scott? Okay. I was in
00:16:56
the embassy room. Scott was questioned
00:16:59
for about 20 minutes. This is an actual
00:17:02
recording of the interrogation pictures.
00:17:04
So, there was a table here about 3 and
00:17:06
1/2 ft tall, I'd say. So, I got up on
00:17:08
it. So I was above everyone and I and to
00:17:11
take and then the shots started to be
00:17:13
fired and I took pictures and kept
00:17:15
taking pictures. All the shots were
00:17:17
being fired. All the shots were being
00:17:18
fired. Maybe Scott Enard had become a
00:17:22
small part of history. I can only tell
00:17:24
by the pictures.
00:17:27
10 months later, Sirhan Sirhan was
00:17:29
sentenced to life in prison for the
00:17:31
murder of Robert Kennedy. The court
00:17:34
ordered that all files from the case,
00:17:36
including Scott's photographs, be sealed
00:17:40
for 20
00:17:44
years. In 1988, he asked for his
00:17:48
confiscated pictures to be
00:17:50
returned. He was told that they were
00:17:53
quote destroyed by the LAPD. In August
00:17:58
1968, Scott filed a lawsuit against the
00:18:01
police.
00:18:03
Top LAPD detectives were assigned to
00:18:06
work with our attorneys uh in
00:18:08
preparation for this lawsuit. Naturally,
00:18:10
if we could find what Scott was looking
00:18:12
for, we thought that that would make the
00:18:13
lawsuit go away.
00:18:16
Incredibly, 8 years later, the pictures
00:18:19
were found.
00:18:22
The city attorneys presented Scott with
00:18:24
a proof sheet made from those negatives.
00:18:28
Scott became suspicious. The proof
00:18:30
showed only one roll of film. The film
00:18:33
stock was Ilford ASA
00:18:37
125. Scott claims he shot three rolls of
00:18:40
film that were Trix ASA 400 manufactured
00:18:45
by Kodak.
00:18:48
Basically, what I believe the police did
00:18:49
was they took role number two, which
00:18:51
showed the speech, and they used part of
00:18:54
that in this proof sheet, and then they
00:18:56
used roll number three, which was once I
00:18:58
returned to the ballroom afterward,
00:19:00
where you see the aftermath and some of
00:19:02
the victims and things, and they just
00:19:04
put them together as a proof sheet, and
00:19:06
expected that they could pass that off
00:19:08
as being all the film that I shot.
00:19:11
That role is a continuous role of film,
00:19:13
shows pictures uh before Mr. Kennedy
00:19:17
speaks, pictures of Robert F. Kennedy
00:19:19
speaking to the audience, and then
00:19:21
pictures of the aftermath of the
00:19:23
shooting. There are no photographs in
00:19:26
the pantry. Our position is that Mr.
00:19:28
Inert did not make it into the pantry
00:19:30
and did not take photographs inside the
00:19:32
pantry.
00:19:34
While Scott's suit was pending, a book
00:19:36
came out with previously unpublished
00:19:39
photographs. This one was taken in the
00:19:41
pantry a few moments after Senator
00:19:43
Kennedy was gunned down. Scott Enard
00:19:46
swears that he's the young man that's
00:19:49
standing on the table with camera in
00:19:51
hand just as he told detectives on the
00:19:54
night that he was interrogated. I don't
00:19:56
know who that person is for sure. We
00:19:59
don't believe that that's Scott Anard. I
00:20:01
think it's just a coincidence that he,
00:20:02
you know, says that he was standing on a
00:20:04
table and there's somebody standing on a
00:20:06
table in the picture. We don't think
00:20:07
that's him.
00:20:09
Scott continued his case against the
00:20:11
LAPD.
00:20:12
The city attorney's office hired a
00:20:14
private courier to transport the
00:20:17
negatives in question from the archives
00:20:19
in
00:20:20
Sacramento to Los
00:20:25
Angeles. Soon after leaving the airport
00:20:27
in a rented car, the courier had to pull
00:20:30
over into a service station. His right
00:20:33
rear tire was
00:20:34
flat, apparently slashed by a knife.
00:20:37
What do you want me to do? Sometime
00:20:40
during the next 10 minutes, the
00:20:42
briefcase containing the negatives was
00:20:45
stolen.
00:20:47
I was with my attorneys when we when we
00:20:49
learned this, and we were just
00:20:50
absolutely shocked. I mean, we we we
00:20:53
were, for some reason, we weren't
00:20:55
surprised, but we were just truly
00:20:58
shocked. I couldn't believe it happened.
00:21:00
Uh it uh but if I was a conspiracy
00:21:03
theorist, I'd say, "See, there's further
00:21:06
proof. Uh now, we'll never know.
00:21:09
In the next few years, Scott's case was
00:21:11
argued twice in court. At first, he was
00:21:14
awarded damages. Then that decision was
00:21:18
reversed. Finally, the case was settled
00:21:21
out of court for an undisclosed amount.
00:21:24
But the ruling was
00:21:25
bittersweet. If those photos exist and
00:21:28
can shed light on how Robert Kennedy was
00:21:30
shot, their value would be immeasurable.
00:21:35
The Enyard photos, if he captured the
00:21:38
actual shooting, would be the only
00:21:40
photographic record that we
00:21:42
have. If those Enyard frames were on
00:21:45
Kennedy as he was falling, it could be
00:21:47
the whole case. It could tell us
00:21:48
everything we want to know about what
00:21:51
happened. To this day, there has been no
00:21:54
trace of Scott's missing photographs.
00:21:58
For many, the true story about what
00:22:00
happened that night
00:22:02
remains an unsolved
00:22:06
mystery. Next, a college student comes
00:22:10
home from partying one Halloween night
00:22:12
and vanishes.
00:22:23
Pennsylvania State University.
00:22:27
I'm strong. I'm beautiful. I can do
00:22:31
anything I want.
00:22:34
These are the words of Cindy Song posted
00:22:37
on her personal website 8 months before
00:22:40
she would have graduated from Penn State
00:22:43
University. A day that would have
00:22:45
celebrated a lifelong
00:22:47
dream. Cindy grew up in South Korea but
00:22:51
lived with her aunt and uncle in
00:22:53
Virginia during high school. She was
00:22:55
enjoying every minute of her new found
00:22:58
freedom in
00:22:59
[Music]
00:23:00
America. It was a Wednesday night,
00:23:04
Halloween, the perfect excuse for
00:23:06
students to party on a school night.
00:23:09
Cindy and two of her girlfriends, Stacy
00:23:12
Peek and Lisa Kim, showed up at their
00:23:14
favorite haunt dressed in
00:23:17
costumes, ready to drink and dance the
00:23:21
night away.
00:23:23
Cindy wore a rabbit outfit. She had
00:23:25
bunny ears and a tail that she had
00:23:27
bought. It was a very cute outfit. It
00:23:29
wasn't like a sexy outfit. It was a very
00:23:31
cute outfit. That was her thing. She was
00:23:33
very cute. She liked to look cute.
00:23:40
The girls partied until 2:00
00:23:43
a.m. Next stop, a friend to play some
00:23:46
video games, then home.
00:23:51
It was now 400 a.m. on Thursday,
00:23:53
November 1st.
00:23:59
Stacy waved goodbye to her friend and
00:24:01
drove
00:24:02
off. She never saw Cindy enter her
00:24:06
apartment and has not seen her since.
00:24:09
Neither has anyone else.
00:24:12
We have no body. We have no crime scene
00:24:14
and we have no actual crime.
00:24:16
So, it's been uh very frustrating uh
00:24:20
without any of those pieces of the
00:24:21
puzzle and because of that it it seems
00:24:24
that she just vanished in thin air.
00:24:29
Cindy was known to have an independent
00:24:31
streak, but she was also hardworking and
00:24:34
responsible. She had good grades and
00:24:36
held down two jobs. Her friends say that
00:24:39
Cindy running off on a whim was simply
00:24:42
out of the question.
00:24:45
What happened? and I kept on calling
00:24:46
her. A search of Cindy's apartment
00:24:48
showed no signs of a struggle, but there
00:24:51
were some clues. We found her eyelashes
00:24:55
on the counter cuz she was wearing fake
00:24:57
eyelashes.
00:24:58
[Music]
00:24:59
We knew that she must have at least come
00:25:01
in and took those off and her backpack
00:25:05
was in her room as well, which she had
00:25:08
been carrying earlier. So, we knew that
00:25:10
she at least came in and dropped that
00:25:12
off. Another clue, Cindy's cell phone
00:25:17
was still in her bag. According to
00:25:20
friends, she never went anywhere without
00:25:22
it and her budding custom was nowhere to
00:25:26
be found. Or she could have I don't
00:25:28
think she ran away because we know that
00:25:31
whenever she left the apartment, she was
00:25:32
wearing the clothes she had on that
00:25:34
night. concert. We also know that her
00:25:37
her purse or pocketbook or whatever she
00:25:39
had with her that evening that contained
00:25:40
her driver's license and credit cards
00:25:42
were with her too cuz we could not
00:25:44
locate those in the apartment.
00:25:47
Did Cindy Song leave her apartment that
00:25:49
same night? Detectives checked her phone
00:25:52
records. No calls in or out. They
00:25:56
checked her credit cards and email.
00:25:59
There was no activity on her credit
00:26:01
cards and there was no uh emails or any
00:26:04
activity on your email accounts that
00:26:06
gave us any clue on to her
00:26:10
disappearance. Early
00:26:13
November, police and volunteers searched
00:26:15
the wooded area near Penn
00:26:19
State. No trace of Cindy
00:26:23
Song. So, what did happen to Cindy Song
00:26:26
that Halloween night?
00:26:31
It seems Cindy left her apartment
00:26:33
voluntarily, locking the door from the
00:26:36
outside. Police wondered where she might
00:26:39
go at 4:00 a.m. Friends said that it
00:26:43
wasn't unusual for Cindy to run out to a
00:26:45
nearby 24-hour market, no matter how
00:26:48
late it was.
00:26:51
Upon her going there or coming back,
00:26:53
something happened. Maybe somebody had
00:26:55
grabbed her and abducted her.
00:26:59
[Music]
00:27:04
A few days later, a chilling scene
00:27:07
unfolds.
00:27:10
A woman matching Cindy's description was
00:27:13
seen crying and yelling for help.
00:27:18
You keep walking. I mean it. Go. Keep
00:27:21
walking, lady.
00:27:24
Later, an eyewitness came forward with a
00:27:27
description of the abductor. A police
00:27:30
artist created this composite drawing of
00:27:33
a man with olive to light brown
00:27:35
complexion and medium length hair. He is
00:27:38
not a suspect, but the police would like
00:27:42
to talk to
00:27:43
him. This is the last photo of Cindy
00:27:46
Song taken the night she disappeared.
00:27:49
Cindy is 21 years old in this picture,
00:27:52
stands just over 5t tall, and weighs 110
00:27:57
lb. If you have any information, please

Big Moose Lake, New
00:28:27
York. When darkness falls, the plaint of
00:28:30
cry of loons summon haunting memories
00:28:34
and more.
00:28:36
One summer night, several young people
00:28:38
working at Covewood Lodge were walking
00:28:41
towards the staff residence. Cut that
00:28:43
out. Let's go. Rhonda Buselo went
00:28:46
inside, unaware that someone or
00:28:50
something
00:28:52
might be waiting. I walked into the
00:28:54
staff lodge straight up the stairs with
00:28:57
my hand out, reaching for the string,
00:28:59
which is how to turn on the light. Just
00:29:02
before I was ready to turn on the light,
00:29:05
a feeling came over me that somebody was
00:29:07
right there.
00:29:10
Karen, something definitely or someone
00:29:13
or was there and it just kind of took my
00:29:16
breath away.
00:29:18
But the real show was
00:29:20
outside. Rhonda's friends were seeing
00:29:22
the presence that Rhonda felt. All three
00:29:26
of them had the same exact
00:29:29
story. It lingered for just a few
00:29:32
seconds and then moved away. Did you see
00:29:35
that? All three of them saw the ghost. I
00:29:38
didn't see anything myself, but I felt
00:29:40
that somebody was right there and it was
00:29:44
just a strange feeling.
00:29:46
Someone or something is haunting Big
00:29:50
Moose Lake. People here believe it's the
00:29:53
ghost of the young and beautiful Grace
00:29:57
Brown. In 1906, her brutal murder
00:30:00
shocked the nation.
00:30:03
Decades later, Hollywood turned the
00:30:06
notorious case into a hit film, A Place
00:30:09
in the Sun. Shelley Winters played
00:30:12
Grace's character, a poor factory girl
00:30:15
seduced and murdered by a faithless
00:30:17
lover, Montgomery
00:30:19
Cliff. He was having a passionate affair
00:30:22
with a beautiful young Elizabeth Taylor.
00:30:26
Hollywood portrayed Grace as an
00:30:27
unattractive nag.
00:30:30
In truth, Grace Brown was a naive,
00:30:33
lovely 19-year-old who worked at the
00:30:35
Gillette Skirt Factory in Courtland, New
00:30:38
York. It was there in 1905 that she met
00:30:42
the charming and handsome Chester
00:30:44
Gillette, the factory owner's nephew.
00:30:46
Hi.
00:30:48
I think he was considered quite a catch
00:30:50
by the people in town because he was
00:30:52
popular and he was uh you know athletic
00:30:54
and he was handsome and uh a lot I'm
00:30:57
sure a lot of women in Courtland were
00:30:58
interested in him.
00:31:00
From the start it was a scandalous
00:31:03
romance.
00:31:04
Grace Chester convinced Grace to see him
00:31:07
without a chaperone which in those days
00:31:10
put her reputation at risk.
00:31:13
I think she saw him as the ideal person,
00:31:17
you know, that he was everything that
00:31:18
that she wanted. You look so beautiful
00:31:20
tonight. Thank you. She was in love
00:31:23
probably for the first time in her life
00:31:25
and she wanted to see this through no
00:31:27
matter what. For Chester, it was a
00:31:30
secret
00:31:31
affair. He never took Grace out in
00:31:34
public. He never acknowledged their
00:31:36
relationship.
00:31:38
However, Chester was frequently seen
00:31:40
with other young women, especially those
00:31:43
from the town's wealthier
00:31:46
families. Her friends were warning her
00:31:49
that he wasn't what he seemed to be,
00:31:51
that he was something different. And I
00:31:53
think that she had no experience with
00:31:55
that type of person. And and so she she
00:31:57
was seeing what she wanted to see rather
00:31:59
than what her friends were telling her.
00:32:03
But Grace could not resist
00:32:06
Chester. Eventually, she discovered she
00:32:09
was
00:32:13
pregnant. At the time, unwed mothers
00:32:15
were
00:32:16
outcasts. It was not uncommon for girls
00:32:19
to commit suicide rather than face
00:32:22
public
00:32:23
shame. Grace begged Chester to marry
00:32:25
her. Chester stalled as long as he
00:32:30
could. Finally, he took Grace to the
00:32:33
Aderandex.
00:32:35
She assumed it was a wedding
00:32:38
trip. At Big Moose Lake, they rented a
00:32:41
rowboat from a man named Robert
00:32:43
Morrison.
00:32:46
Morrison expected them to come back
00:32:47
around dinner time.
00:32:50
And when they didn't come back, uh, he
00:32:52
thought that that was somewhat
00:32:53
suspicious. Let's take it around this
00:32:54
way a little bit. Morrison organized the
00:32:57
search party the next
00:33:00
morning. A short distance away from the
00:33:03
cap-sized boat, they found Grace's body.
00:33:06
Look down there.
00:33:12
Two days later, police found Chester
00:33:14
Gillette in a nearby hotel. At first, he
00:33:17
denied even knowing Grace Brown, and
00:33:20
then he claimed that Grace had drowned
00:33:22
herself because he didn't love her
00:33:24
anymore. But at his trial, the
00:33:27
jury was not buying that story.
00:33:33
Chester Gillette was convicted of
00:33:34
first-degree
00:33:36
murder on March 30th, 1908. He died in
00:33:41
the electric
00:33:43
chair. Had justice been
00:33:47
served, apparently not enough to satisfy
00:33:50
the restless spirit of Grace
00:33:53
Brown. Two other visitors also had a
00:33:56
strange encounter not far from where
00:33:58
Grace's body was found.
00:34:01
Oh my god.
00:34:03
I was aruck. Look at her face. And not
00:34:07
only uh was I certain that I was looking
00:34:10
at a ghost, but I had a very strong
00:34:13
feeling of sadness. Um she was very sad.
00:34:18
Over the years, there have been
00:34:20
continual sightings of Grace Brown's
00:34:22
ghost.
00:34:24
Many wonder if her spirit has been
00:34:27
trapped at Big Moose Lake since the day
00:34:29
she was drowned by her faithless
00:34:35
lover. Coming up, a 14-year-old girl is
00:34:39
lured away from her home into a vampire
00:34:42
fantasy game.
00:34:51
[Music]
00:34:53
They are dark. They are dangerous. They
00:34:56
are
00:34:58
sexy. From Transylvania to Hollywood,
00:35:01
vampires attract followers and
00:35:04
imitators. Today, vampire chat rooms and
00:35:07
fantasy games attract thousands of
00:35:09
visitors every day.
00:35:13
Most of this is
00:35:14
harmless, but for some, the fun may have
00:35:17
a sinister
00:35:19
side. This 14-year-old girl disappeared
00:35:23
from her home one week before Christmas.
00:35:27
Police think that Kira O'Connell was
00:35:29
lured from her home by a man she met on
00:35:32
the internet on a website for vampires.
00:35:36
I believe she's being held against her
00:35:38
will. I believe he's not letting her
00:35:39
call. I don't know if she's even aware.
00:35:41
What's going on? Authorities believe
00:35:44
Kira is with this man, 22-year-old
00:35:47
Brooker Malté. He's a senior airman in
00:35:51
the US Air Force, now listed as a
00:35:55
deserter. Malté helped run a vampire
00:35:58
chat room on the internet, the Black
00:36:00
Rose
00:36:02
Nightclub. Kira started playing the game
00:36:04
and somehow met some people that were
00:36:06
playing the game and started shooting
00:36:07
off into a separate chat room, talking
00:36:09
to this man one-on-one.
00:36:12
And we know now from reading his emails
00:36:14
to her that he figured out how to talk
00:36:16
to her, how to get inside her mind, how
00:36:18
to basically control
00:36:19
it. Generally speaking, we're looking at
00:36:22
kids who are usually intelligent
00:36:25
children and want to belong, want to be
00:36:28
a part of something, want to
00:36:30
participate. And so this comes along and
00:36:33
reaches out to them and says, "There are
00:36:35
no rules. It's exciting. It's different.
00:36:39
uh mom and dad won't like it very much
00:36:41
and once they get involved in it
00:36:44
sometimes it you know it becomes more
00:36:46
than just a game to these children. When
00:36:48
teen vampire fantasies reel out of
00:36:51
control the results can be a nightmare.
00:36:55
This blood bath made national headlines.
00:36:58
Five teenagers from the small town of
00:37:00
Murray, Kentucky arrested for a shocking
00:37:03
double murder. One of the five was
00:37:06
Heather Wendorf, whose parents were the
00:37:10
victims.
00:37:11
The vampire leader was 16-year-old Rod
00:37:15
Ferrell.
00:37:17
The city police detective said that he
00:37:21
would cut his arm and let others suck
00:37:23
his blood. They call it being embraced.
00:37:26
Embraced into the family. Frell and his
00:37:29
group reportedly like to play vampire at
00:37:32
various places around town.
00:37:34
One of Frell's favorite hangouts was an
00:37:37
abandoned building he
00:37:39
called the vampire
00:37:43
hotel. He told the sheriff's department
00:37:45
he thought he was immortal. He told the
00:37:47
sheriffs that he didn't think whatever
00:37:50
happened to him. He feels he's
00:37:52
invincible. He honestly believes he's a
00:37:53
vampire.
00:37:55
Heather Wendorf was cleared in the
00:37:57
deaths of her parents. The other members
00:37:59
of the group were all convicted of the
00:38:01
murders. Rod Ferrell received the death
00:38:04
sentence, but he escaped death row. His
00:38:07
sentence was commuted to life
00:38:09
imprisonment because he was just 16
00:38:11
years old when he committed the
00:38:17
crimes
00:38:19
update. Kira Okano has been found. She
00:38:24
and Brooker Malté were living in Marian,
00:38:26
Illinois, posing as father and daughter,
00:38:29
or sometimes brother and sister. Kira is
00:38:33
now back with her family. Brooker Malté
00:38:36
was convicted and sentenced to 4 years
00:38:38
in military
00:38:40

prison. Santa Monica, California.
00:38:50
from as far back as he could remember.
00:38:52
Bill O'Neal was told that his father
00:38:54
died when he was a baby. But yet, he
00:38:58
always felt somehow different from his
00:39:01
older brothers and sisters.
00:39:04
I was the only one with hazel eyes and
00:39:07
everybody else had these bright blue
00:39:09
eyes. My skin was more like an olive
00:39:12
skin where they were fairer skinned. Not
00:39:15
that anything was ever said to me or
00:39:17
anything like that that was different
00:39:19
than anybody else. Like my mom didn't
00:39:22
treat me any different. Just a feeling
00:39:24
inside like something was
00:39:27
lost. Years later, Bill discovered that
00:39:30
Hugh O'Neal, the man he thought was his
00:39:32
father, had in fact died 2 years before
00:39:36
he was
00:39:37
born. When Bill confronted his mother,
00:39:40
she told him everything.
00:39:44
Hugh O'Neal was a patient at Chicago's
00:39:46
VA hospital. There, Bill's mother met a
00:39:49
friend of Hughes named Jim Burke, a
00:39:51
divorced father of four. Jim, so this
00:39:54
must be the beautiful lady you've been
00:39:56
keeping from me. Hugh O'Neal died within
00:39:59
a month of that meeting. My wife, nice
00:40:02
meeting you. Nice to meet you. Before
00:40:04
long, Jim Burke became a familiar
00:40:06
presence in the O'Neal
00:40:08
household. Two years later, Bill was
00:40:11
born.
00:40:13
Bill later discovered that he also had a
00:40:15
sister who had been put up for
00:40:18
adoption. Jim Burke was her father, too.
00:40:22
Bill eventually found his sister, Karen
00:40:25
Alouse, and together they decided to
00:40:28
search for their natural father, Jim
00:40:30
Burke.
00:40:34
Update. On the night of our broadcast,
00:40:37
we were contacted by two of Jim Burke's
00:40:40
four children from his previous
00:40:42
marriage. Bill and Karen were sad to
00:40:45
hear that their father had died just a
00:40:47
few years earlier, but they were happy
00:40:49
to know that two of his daughters were
00:40:52
anxious to meet them.

I didn't know I was going to die.
00:41:03
I didn't know I was going to do this.
00:41:06
I felt a connection, a definite
00:41:09
connection. Like when I reached out to
00:41:11
hug them, I didn't feel like I was going
00:41:15
to be as emotionally tied as I felt.
00:41:19
Ditto.
00:41:21
For Sheila, an and Eileene, the bond was
00:41:25
just as strong.
00:41:28
As soon as I saw Bill, as soon as I saw
00:41:31
his face, there was absolutely no doubt
00:41:34
in my mind that he was a brother. No
00:41:36
doubt. This is our father. This is what
00:41:39
I've wondered all my life. Who are my
00:41:41
parents? Do I have more family? Did I
00:41:44
have brothers and sisters? Things like
00:41:46
that. And it's exciting to finally see
00:41:49
them, to touch them, to to get to know
00:41:52
them.
00:41:53
It was just a inside warm feeling that
00:41:56
everything was now completed.
