North Hollywood, California.
00:01:41
A single gunshot draws Mel Green and
00:01:44
several others to the parking lot of his
00:01:47
office building. They find Mel's wife,
00:01:49
Anita, in her car. She had been shot
00:01:52
once in the head. After two days in a
00:01:55
coma, Anita Green dies.
00:02:01
Her friend Michelle Sammit has written a
00:02:04
book about the murder and now believes
00:02:06
that the killer is stalking her.
00:02:10
The knowledge that this guy's out there
00:02:12
out on the streets terrifies me every
00:02:14
day. Whether it's the person I think did
00:02:16
it or not, because any person who did it
00:02:18
knows that I know a lot about this case
00:02:19
that they don't want me to know.
00:02:22
Anita Green had been murdered in broad
00:02:24
daylight. Whoever shot her was ruthless
00:02:27
and confident. Anita's friend, Michelle
00:02:30
Samut, claimed that when she researched
00:02:32
the shooting, the same killer began
00:02:34
stalking her. This frightening case had
00:02:37
begun years before when Anita Green
00:02:40
first met Mel Green.
00:02:43
Anita worked as a bookkeeper in Mel's
00:02:46
accounting firm. Both were married, but
00:02:48
after a 7-year affair, they left their
00:02:51
spouses and tying the knot. Anita's
00:02:54
friends were shocked, not only because
00:02:57
Mel weighed more than 500 lb, but also
00:03:00
because he convinced Anita to sign an
00:03:03
outrageous prenuptual agreement.
00:03:07
Basically, there was a provision in it
00:03:08
that he wore the pants in the family and
00:03:11
he was the supreme boss, the god, the
00:03:14
absolute ruler, and if they ever had an
00:03:16
argument or disagreement, he would
00:03:18
automatically win just because of that
00:03:19
role.
00:03:22
Wednesday night,
00:03:23
Anita became active at her synagogue as
00:03:26
a refuge from the difficult marriage.
00:03:31
Other than attending some services,
00:03:33
Mel showed little interest.
00:03:36
Anita provided conflicting accounts of
00:03:38
her relationship with Mel.
00:03:40
Let's go. I'm late.
00:03:43
All right.
00:03:44
She'd say she was afraid of her husband,
00:03:45
but then she said, "Oh, you know, Mel,
00:03:47
he's just a loudmouth. He likes to hear
00:03:48
himself talk. He's a blowhard. he's not
00:03:51
really going to do anything to me. She
00:03:52
had all the classic symptoms of an
00:03:55
abused woman, thinking they were in
00:03:57
control, thinking that they knew what
00:03:59
they were doing, but really frightened
00:04:00
and scared.
00:04:02
Eventually, Anita was elected president
00:04:05
of the synagogue. As a result, she and
00:04:08
her rabbi spent a lot of time together,
00:04:10
eventually becoming romantically
00:04:13
involved. When Anita asked Mal for a
00:04:16
divorce, he was furious.
00:04:20
I absolutely demand that my property is
00:04:23
handed over to me. I have an extensive
00:04:26
stamp and coin.
00:04:26
Despite his bitterness, Mel Green
00:04:29
insisted that Anita continue to work at
00:04:32
his accounting firm.
00:04:34
She has to work for me. The business
00:04:36
depends upon it.
00:04:37
Mel was inconsistent. One minute, I
00:04:39
don't need you. You're not worth
00:04:41
anything. But the next minute, he would
00:04:43
absolutely be insistent. She had to work
00:04:45
for him. Throughout the divorce
00:04:48
proceedings, Green bombarded Anita and
00:04:51
her lawyer with threatening letters.
00:04:54
Only after Anita was murdered were the
00:04:56
letters turned over to the police.
00:04:58
Malvin Green did send some letters where
00:05:01
he threatened to kill Anita Green. In my
00:05:04
mind, it just gave more credence to him
00:05:07
being involved in her shooting.
00:05:09
So, let me see if I understand. You were
00:05:12
working at your desk. Detective
00:05:13
Hernandez found three different
00:05:15
witnesses to Anita's murder. One was a
00:05:18
man who worked across the street from
00:05:20
Gra's firm. He observed Green coming out
00:05:23
of the building minutes before Anita
00:05:25
drove up in her red Corvette.
00:05:28
It's a door that is not used very often.
00:05:31
So, it was unusual to this witness
00:05:33
across the street to see this. After he
00:05:37
observed Melvin Green looking, he
00:05:39
observed Anita Green turned a corner
00:05:41
closely followed by a motorcycle.
00:05:44
A second witness working on a nearby
00:05:46
roof, saw even more.
00:05:50
And what brought his attention was he
00:05:52
heard a motorcycle arrive, parked on the
00:05:55
wrong side of the street. He observed
00:05:58
the individual approach Anita Green,
00:06:01
fire one shot,
00:06:03
immediately ran to his motorcycle, and
00:06:06
at a high rate of speed go northbound on
00:06:08
the street.
00:06:10

00:06:12
Finally, a third witness helped police
00:06:15
come up with this composite. He got a
00:06:18
good look at the motorcyclist shortly
00:06:19
after Anita's murder. Investigators
00:06:22
began to suspect that Green had hired a
00:06:24
hitman to kill his wife. Their
00:06:27
suspicions were increased when they
00:06:29
heard about Green's behavior at the
00:06:31
hospital. Anita's friend, Phyllis
00:06:34
Bolton, recalls a bizarre conversation
00:06:37
with Mel. Moments after Anita died,
00:06:40
Anita's body was still in the room.
00:06:43
I look pretty good, don't I?
00:06:46
It's the new liquid diet that I'm on.
00:06:48
He was talking about how much weight he
00:06:50
had lost and how good he had looked. It
00:06:53
was absolutely nauseating. There was not
00:06:56
one moment of remorse, not one tear
00:06:59
shed. He was as talkative as if she was
00:07:03
wide awake and sitting there watching
00:07:04
us.
00:07:06
The day after Anita was shot, Detective
00:07:09
Hernandez tried to interview Green at
00:07:11
his office.
00:07:12
Detective, you stop right there. I can't
00:07:14
talk to you. My attorney says I can't
00:07:16
speak with anyone.
00:07:16
Why do you need an attorney?
00:07:18
Green refused to cooperate, but the
00:07:20
investigation continued.
00:07:23
Talk to my attorney.
00:07:26
We were able to piece together the fact
00:07:28
that Melvin Green specifically control
00:07:32
the date and time Anita Green was
00:07:35
supposed to be at his office. That would
00:07:38
allow Melvin Green to have somebody
00:07:41
hired to follow her and shoot her. And
00:07:45
that's how Anita Green was shot.
00:07:50
Mel Green was eventually arrested for
00:07:52
conspiring to kill his wife, even though
00:07:55
there was no physical evidence tying him
00:07:57
to the crime. The jury ruled that he had
00:08:00
murdered Anita for financial gain. Green
00:08:04
was convicted of first-degree murder and
00:08:06
sentenced to life in prison without the
00:08:08
possibility of parole. But the case was
00:08:11
far from over. Green appealed, claiming
00:08:15
that he was innocent and the hitman,
00:08:17
whoever he was, remained at large.
00:08:21
A few months after his conviction, a
00:08:23
journalist, Michelle Samut, visited
00:08:26
Green in a local jail where he was
00:08:28
waiting to be transferred to a state
00:08:30
prison. Against his lawyer's advice,
00:08:33
Green agreed to be interviewed for
00:08:35
Michelle's book.
00:08:36
Hello, Mel.
00:08:37
Hello, Michelle.
00:08:38
How are you doing? I wanted to go in
00:08:39
there with an open mind and I started to
00:08:42
listen to him and for the first few
00:08:43
weeks of our visits. I wasn't certain of
00:08:46
anything anymore.
00:08:47
There's no connection. So there's more
00:08:49
than one road to reasonable doubt.
00:08:51
But as our visits continued, Mel himself
00:08:55
made me more certain of his guilt than
00:08:56
ever before.
00:09:00
Michelle continued her investigation.
00:09:02
There was one thing that kept nagging at
00:09:05
her. How and when had Mal paid the
00:09:08
hitman? Michelle claims that she
00:09:11
uncovered evidence that Green sold off a
00:09:14
$30,000 coin collection just 3 weeks
00:09:17
before Anita was murdered. Michelle told
00:09:20
the police about her discovery.
00:09:23
My innocence will come.
00:09:24
Michelle continued to interview Green.
00:09:27
On one occasion, their session was
00:09:29
interrupted by an unusual visitor. All
00:09:32
right. This is a man I call my brother
00:09:35
because he'd do anything for me. In
00:09:37
fact, he's a homeowner because of me.
00:09:40
You can wait outside.
00:09:43
Mel had visitors come every day during
00:09:45
our visits. My visits were all day long.
00:09:49
Mel had never asked me to leave during
00:09:51
his visits before. And and that alone I
00:09:54
thought was unusual.
00:09:57
And I went downstairs and I went into my
00:10:00
car and sat. I knew I'd have about a
00:10:02
half hour until this guy came out
00:10:05
and my mind started to run away with me
00:10:07
that um this guy looked a lot like the
00:10:10
police composite of Anita's shooter.
00:10:13
Michelle says that when the visitor
00:10:14
left, he got on a motorcycle that looked
00:10:17
exactly like the one driven by Anita's
00:10:20
killer.
00:10:22
When I went back to the jail, I made a
00:10:26
very stupid mistake. I said to Mel, I've
00:10:29
got this theory.
00:10:31
You paid for the murder with the money
00:10:33
from the coins you said Anita stole. She
00:10:35
didn't steal them.
00:10:36
You're not going to write that.
00:10:38
Michelle claims that when she told Green
00:10:40
about her suspicions, he threatened her.
00:10:42
Nobody's going to put those lies about
00:10:44
me. If you end up dead after I make a
00:10:47
call, you'll know who did it.
00:10:50
I knew Mel likes to talk like that. You
00:10:52
know, this is just a blowhard, just a
00:10:53
man talking. And I realized, God, how
00:10:56
stupid can you be, Michelle? That's
00:10:57
exactly what Anita said and she's dead.
00:11:00
The next day, Green was transferred to a
00:11:03
prison east of San Diego. From there, he
00:11:06
sent a stream of frightening letters to
00:11:09
Michelle.
00:11:10
He's threatened to harm my children.
00:11:14
He's threatened to hurt me. But I
00:11:17
couldn't stop because I knew I had the
00:11:21
potential to find the answer.
00:11:22
Michelle says that over the next few
00:11:25
months, someone began to stalk her. The
00:11:28
front gate of her house was ripped from
00:11:30
its hinges and her house was vandalized.
00:11:34
Then in her driveway, an unidentified
00:11:36
man hit her in the face, breaking her
00:11:39
nose.
00:11:41
A lot of that has stopped now that the
00:11:42
book has come out. But of course, you
00:11:45
always live your life fearing that what
00:11:47
you've uncovered might lead to some
00:11:50
potential danger for your family.
00:11:52
Michelle believes that the man she saw
00:11:54
visiting Green in jail was the same man
00:11:57
pictured on the police composite. He has
00:12:00
blonde hair, dark eyes, a muscular
00:12:02
build, and may own a red or maroon
00:12:06
Suzuki motorcycle. Mel Green's appeal
00:12:09
was denied. Investigators think
00:12:12
Michelle's theory concerning the gunman
00:12:14
has merit, and they are anxious for new
00:12:17
leads about his identity.
00:12:20
Next, the story of a young man who went
00:12:22
to deposit his paycheck at a local ATM
00:12:25
and never returned.
00:12:37
Los Angeles, California,
00:12:41
11:45
00:12:43
p.m.
00:12:44
No, I forgot to deposit my check. It
00:12:47
wasn't until 22-year-old Matt Chase
00:12:50
returned home from dinner with his
00:12:52
roommate Teresa that he remembered he
00:12:54
needed to deposit his paycheck. Matt
00:12:57
borrowed Teresa's car and promised to
00:12:59
pick up some cat food on the way home.
00:13:02
Okay, see you in a few minutes.
00:13:06
It should have taken Matt approximately
00:13:09
10 15 minutes to run the errand. The
00:13:11
bank was about two blocks from our home
00:13:14
and normally he walked and that
00:13:17
particular evening he'd taken my car so
00:13:20
at the most 15 minutes would be
00:13:23
sufficient.
00:13:25
But by the next morning, Matt still had
00:13:28
not come home. Teresa and her other
00:13:31
roommate Steve called the bank
00:13:33
pretending to be Matt.
00:13:35
Hello. Uh my name is Matthew Chase.
00:13:38
They wanted to find out if he had used
00:13:40
his bank card. the night before
00:13:42
there had been transactions. Great.
00:13:44
The bank said that he had
00:13:46
okay
00:13:46
a couple of times
00:13:49
what time they were made, what day and
00:13:52
Steven Teresa call the police.
00:13:56
A light came on indicating this is not
00:13:58
going to be a normal run-of-the-mill
00:14:00
case. It's going to be something that
00:14:02
requires some in-depth investigation
00:14:06
and it may may not turn out to be a good
00:14:08
case as we call them.
00:14:12
When we reviewed the bank records, it
00:14:15
indicates that he made a successful
00:14:17
deposit of a paycheck, received cash
00:14:20
back, and then returned to the same
00:14:23
branch approximately 30 minutes later,
00:14:25
and attempted to withdraw $280, which he
00:14:29
knows is over the amount of cash he can
00:14:31
receive per day.
00:14:34
The theory there would be that either he
00:14:35
was being forced to attempt to withdraw
00:14:38
these amounts or he was signaling to the
00:14:41
bank to the computer for help.
00:14:44
That same night, two more attempts were
00:14:47
made to withdraw cash. The first was for
00:14:49
$200. It was rejected because of
00:14:52
insufficient funds, and then a minute
00:14:55
later, $100 was requested. Since Matt's
00:14:58
paycheck had not been posted, that
00:15:01
request was also denied.
00:15:04
Only 11 minutes later, the card was used
00:15:07
at another branch in a different
00:15:09
neighborhood. Again, the withdrawals
00:15:12
were unsuccessful,
00:15:14
but this time, a hidden camera took
00:15:16
pictures and showed a strange man
00:15:19
standing over Matt's right shoulder.
00:15:21
According to these surveillance cameras
00:15:24
at the branch, the person standing next
00:15:26
to Matt was somewhat shorter, somewhat
00:15:29
stockier, and overall he shouldn't have
00:15:32
been in the photograph. No one is going
00:15:34
to let someone stand that close to him
00:15:37
while they're using an ATM machine where
00:15:39
they can see the PIN number.
00:15:43
Police fear that Matt may have been
00:15:44
abducted by the man in photograph while
00:15:47
he was making his first transactions.
00:15:50
Over the next day and a half, there were
00:15:53
five more withdrawal attempts. By this
00:15:56
time, Matt's paycheck had cleared, so
00:15:58
$400 was withdrawn from his account.
00:16:04
Finally, the card was confiscated by the
00:16:07
machine.
00:16:08
We put a freeze on the card, thinking
00:16:11
that the police might be able to go get
00:16:14
fingerprints off the card.
00:16:17
The card was dusted for Prince and none
00:16:20
were found.
00:16:21
Police believe it was either wiped clean
00:16:23
or that Matt's abductor used gloves.
00:16:29
Matt's mother and father came down from
00:16:31
Oregon to search for their son and for
00:16:33
the car he drove to the bank that night.
00:16:36
In this picture, would you please call
00:16:38
the number? Okay.
00:16:39
At first, we had great hopes, I think,
00:16:41
that we were going to stumble onto the
00:16:43
car somewhere in near proximity of where
00:16:45
they lived.
00:16:46
I believe after a couple three nights of
00:16:49
doing this, we became very frustrated.
00:16:52
Los Angeles can be a dangerous place at
00:16:54
night. We saw a lot of things that were
00:16:57
very frightening, and that only made it
00:17:00
more real to us that that something
00:17:04
perhaps very
00:17:07
serious had happened to Matt.
00:17:10
The police had no immediate answers. An
00:17:13
attack may have left Matt injured,
00:17:15
abducted, or even worse. Undeterred,
00:17:18
Matt's roommates, Steve and Teresa,
00:17:21
began distributing his picture at a
00:17:23
local rescue mission.
00:17:25
I talked to several of the people there.
00:17:27
And a couple of the volunteers that
00:17:29
worked at the Midnight Mission said when
00:17:32
I showed them just his driver's license,
00:17:34
cuz I'd run out of posters, said, "Oh,
00:17:36
yes, we have seen him. He's been in here
00:17:39
several times eating. Um, he's really
00:17:41
And then they just started to describe
00:17:43
him to me and they said, "He's very tall
00:17:45
and thin, isn't he?" And and very lanky.
00:17:48
And I said, "Yes, exactly." And for them
00:17:50
to get that from one of those tiny
00:17:54
pictures from a driver's license
00:17:57
is really miraculous. And we thought,
00:17:59
well, wow, they really have seen him.
00:18:01
And we thought we were just so close to
00:18:03
finding him at that point.
00:18:07
Almost 3 weeks after Matt disappeared,
00:18:09
the missing car was found close to where
00:18:12
he had vanished.
00:18:14
When they found that car, they ran the
00:18:17
license plate via the SVS system, and it
00:18:20
indicate that it was associated with a
00:18:22
missing person and that I wanted the
00:18:24
vehicle held for latent fingerprints.
00:18:27
The criminalist dusted it for
00:18:28
fingerprints, looked at it for other
00:18:30
evidence of a crime, and the car was
00:18:33
completely void of fingerprints.
00:18:37
Police found only one clue in the car.
00:18:39
It was a blue bandana.
00:18:42
Investigators believe that it may have
00:18:44
been left by Matt's abductor.
00:18:49
I don't know what happened. I know that
00:18:52
I hope none of the things that I've
00:18:54
dreamed about
00:18:56
and wake up in the night and think about
00:19:00
are the things that could have happened
00:19:02
to Matt. We'll never stop looking for
00:19:05
him until we find him. And I know we'll
00:19:07
find him.
00:19:08
He means a lot to me.
00:19:11
He's my best friend.
00:19:17
Update.
00:19:20
3 months after he disappeared, the
00:19:22
remains of Matt Chase were discovered in
00:19:24
a ravine in nearby Pasadena. The cause
00:19:28
of his death was a gunshot wound.
00:19:31
This is an artist rendering of the prime
00:19:33
suspect in this case based on computer
00:19:36
enhancements of the bank photographs.
00:19:39
Coming up, a young couple buys a new
00:19:42
house, but no one told them that they'd
00:19:45
be sharing it with a gang of restless
00:19:48
ghosts.
00:19:59
It seemed like a nice house on a nice
00:20:02
street in a nice neighborhood. There was
00:20:04
nothing extraordinary about it. Or so it
00:20:07
seemed to the couple who bought it. But
00:20:10
then strange noises and even stranger
00:20:12
apparitions made them realize
00:20:16
that they were not alone.
00:20:21
Vancouver, Washington.
00:20:26
It was the little things at first. A
00:20:29
quiet rattle, a slight chill, the
00:20:31
tiniest hint of a presence. Then about 7
00:20:35
months after Ed and Mary Woods moved in,
00:20:39
I've heard the sound of a music box.
00:20:45
It was very faint.
00:20:52
[Music]
00:20:56
I went into my husband's office and
00:20:58
looked around.
00:21:02
There was no sign of anything in there,
00:21:03
but I kept hearing it.
00:21:06
And it wasn't something I heard in my
00:21:08
mind like like you would imagine. It was
00:21:12
an actual sound in the house. I thought
00:21:15
somebody had opened up a music box and
00:21:17
it was playing.
00:21:18
The first time I had an experience where
00:21:20
I noticed something actually happening,
00:21:23
um, I was sitting in my office with the
00:21:25
door closed.
00:21:33
Mary had warned Ed that there was
00:21:35
something strange about the house, but
00:21:38
Ed just assumed that his young daughter
00:21:40
was playing a prank. I thought I'd
00:21:43
surprise her by opening the door.
00:21:46
Gotcha.
00:21:47
There was nobody there. I checked and
00:21:49
everyone in the house was asleep.
00:21:52
Who or what was stirring up all the
00:21:54
trouble.
00:21:56
Well, Mary was about to find out.
00:22:00
[Music]
00:22:03
I actually saw the figure of a woman.
00:22:05
She was about my height. Um, wearing a
00:22:08
scarf around her head and like a long
00:22:10
flannel night gown.
00:22:13
I was not scared of her. I did not get
00:22:15
the impression that she was mean. I was
00:22:19
not frightened of her. I was just
00:22:21
startled by her.
00:22:23
After several encounters, Mary decided
00:22:26
to do a little research.
00:22:29
I have been able to identify her through
00:22:31
going through records. She was a former
00:22:34
resident who had died in the home of
00:22:36
cancer.
00:22:38
the latter part of the her life towards
00:22:42
the end because of the heavy radiation
00:22:43
and chemotherapy. She wore scarves
00:22:45
because she had lost all her hair and
00:22:47
she practically lived in flannel night
00:22:50
gowns. I found out later that her
00:22:53
children were in the same bedrooms that
00:22:55
my children are in.
00:22:58
And it could be she's just looking for
00:22:59
hers.
00:23:03
The first thing I actually saw was a man
00:23:05
standing in the living room.
00:23:08
looked like an old riverboat gambler
00:23:10
with a little ribbon tie and a mustache.
00:23:14
You look at him twice because you're not
00:23:16
too sure if he's going to do something.
00:23:17
He He never moves though.
00:23:24
And then there was Pinky.
00:23:32
Pinky is a a little girl 8 to 10 years
00:23:35
old.
00:23:37
And once in a while you hear a giggle.
00:23:43
First time I thought it was our youngest
00:23:44
daughter. We'd been sitting in the
00:23:46
living room watching movies and I
00:23:48
thought it was my youngest daughter
00:23:50
giggling at the movies till I looked
00:23:53
down and realized she had fallen asleep
00:23:54
in front of the TV and was sound asleep.
00:23:56
So there was no way.
00:24:01
For Ed and Mary, the unearly visitors
00:24:04
were becoming part of their daily life.
00:24:07
Even in the shower,
00:24:09
ourselves and many people that have been
00:24:12
guests of ours who've taken baths or
00:24:14
showers have found themselves
00:24:17
accompanied in the shower by a a
00:24:21
friendly hug and a general body rub that
00:24:25
seems to be quite female in nature.
00:24:28
Doesn't seem to matter if the person
00:24:29
taking the shower is male or female.
00:24:32
Just u somebody's been gone a long time,
00:24:35
I think, and missed some of the things
00:24:37
that the world had to provide.
00:24:41
As far as the woods were concerned,
00:24:43
there was little doubt that the house
00:24:45
was haunted.
00:24:47
Let's go ahead and move down the hallway
00:24:48
here. Now, I want you to tell me both
00:24:50
you tell me just pretty much where where
00:24:53
the lady in white and where things
00:24:54
happen. We called in Lloyd Hourbach, a
00:24:58
paranormal investigator, to check out
00:25:00
the house.
00:25:02
Hourbach came armed with an instrument
00:25:04
that measures electromagnetic activity.
00:25:07
It was reading next to nothing.
00:25:09
Literally,
00:25:10
it's not a ghost detector by any way,
00:25:12
shape, or form. It's a good indicator
00:25:13
that there's a physical connection in
00:25:15
the environment to their experience.
00:25:17
That helps validate that they're not
00:25:19
completely making it up in their minds.
00:25:21
Helps me understand that they're not
00:25:22
completely making it up in their minds.
00:25:24
also there is some correlation.
00:25:27
He walked all through the house and in
00:25:29
several areas the magnetometer spiked
00:25:31
without explanation.
00:25:33
Okay, now we got a reading again
00:25:35
in the back bathroom in the living room.
00:25:38
I'm getting some things in the corner
00:25:40
and the hallway.
00:25:41
I'm getting actually a high reading
00:25:42
again. high energy reading which I just
00:25:44
this is a very unusual pattern that
00:25:47
we're seeing here that seems to relate
00:25:49
to the phenomena or at least to a
00:25:51
sensation of it but doesn't seem to
00:25:53
relate to anything else. So I can pretty
00:25:55
much rule out the physical environment
00:25:57
causing this. You don't have like a
00:25:59
generator under the house somewhere, do
00:26:01
you?
00:26:01
No. For myself, there was an odd
00:26:05
correspondence, I guess, with the spike
00:26:07
in the meters, and I'd get a real cold
00:26:10
feeling or a chill down the back of my
00:26:12
neck or the hair on my arms would raise
00:26:15
up like goosebumps. It didn't happen all
00:26:19
the time,
00:26:22
but on several of the occasions, I felt
00:26:24
like there was somebody in the room.
00:26:26
No, this one I've seen several times.
00:26:28
Was somebody or something actually
00:26:31
there? Perhaps a few unhappy spirits
00:26:35
trying to bridge the gap between the
00:26:37
dead and the living. Lloyd Hourbach
00:26:40
believes it's possible, but by no means
00:26:42
definite.
00:26:44
Ed and Mary Woods, however, have gone
00:26:46
from wondering
00:26:48
to believing.
00:26:49
[Music]
00:26:54
Next, a mentally unstable young man
00:26:58
disappears and his family fears the
00:27:01
worst,
00:27:07
[Music]
00:27:12
Oak Park, Illinois.
00:27:16
Today is August 3. No, 29th. Right.
00:27:19
This is Jim Kimble at the age of 18. At
00:27:23
15, he was diagnosed with a severe
00:27:26
psychological disorder. At 24, 6 years
00:27:30
after this home video was shot, Jim
00:27:32
disappeared.
00:27:34
But that was all still to come. Growing
00:27:37
up, Jim was the sixth child in a large
00:27:40
and loving family.
00:27:42
Well, ever since Jim was young, he was
00:27:44
always on the shy side and maybe more
00:27:46
sensitive than other people.
00:27:49
You never expected any trouble when Jim
00:27:53
was around.
00:27:55
He was pretty special.
00:27:58
Friends, we have gathered here to
00:28:00
remember the life of Donald
00:28:01
when he was just 13. Jim's father
00:28:04
suddenly died of a heart attack.
00:28:06
Our grieving hearts are saddened that
00:28:08
the breath of life
00:28:09
Jim seems very quiet and he didn't
00:28:11
really show a lot of emotion. and the
00:28:13
rest of us were all upset and and
00:28:15
absorbed in our own grief. You I noticed
00:28:19
he didn't seem to really be crying or
00:28:20
carrying on. You know, maybe he was
00:28:22
holding a lot of his emotions inside and
00:28:25
he wasn't expressing himself.
00:28:30
This was just the first sign that
00:28:32
something was terribly wrong. But at the
00:28:34
time, the family was consumed with grief
00:28:37
and didn't notice. In fact, Jim was
00:28:40
holding his emotions inside and he was
00:28:43
wrestling with a severe mental disorder
00:28:46
which would erupt almost 3 years to the
00:28:48
day after his father's death.
00:28:53
As teenagers, Jim and his brothers
00:28:56
formed their own garage band. Jim played
00:28:59
the drums.
00:29:01
Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Jim,
00:29:02
come on. Got to have something steady
00:29:04
from you. You're all over the place.
00:29:05
What's going on, Jim?
00:29:08
Hey, what's with you, man? Jim, are you
00:29:11
okay?
00:29:12
He was acting strange and I and I was
00:29:14
afraid for him. It came to a point where
00:29:16
it was like we better bring him to
00:29:18
hospital or something cuz we didn't know
00:29:20
what he was going to do next.
00:29:25
You don't seem to be too sure of
00:29:26
anything.
00:29:28
No,
00:29:30
it's all a waste of time.
00:29:33
It's not like it used to be. Jim was
00:29:36
diagnosed with a mental illness, a form
00:29:38
of manic depression characterized by
00:29:41
strange thoughts and severe mood swings.
00:29:44
Never come back.
00:29:46
Was this some friend of yours?
00:29:48
He was confused. He indicated that he
00:29:50
had heard some voices
00:29:53
that he had both sorrow and certainly
00:29:56
anger with his father's death. I
00:29:59
think maybe they never did.
00:30:02
Jim required medication to control his
00:30:04
condition. The next eight years were
00:30:07
full of hospitalizations, relapses, and
00:30:10
recoveries. But Jim somehow managed to
00:30:13
graduate from high school and hold a few
00:30:15
jobs. Eventually, he moved into a nearby
00:30:19
halfway house.
00:30:22
One Easter weekend, Jim showed up at his
00:30:24
mother's house earlier than expected.
00:30:27
Well, your brother could have picked you
00:30:28
up later. Yeah, I know. I just I come
00:30:31
home
00:30:31
pretty surprised that he would go
00:30:33
through all that trouble to walk home.
00:30:35
You know,
00:30:36
all the family was together. We had a
00:30:39
nice turkey dinner for Easter.
00:30:42
Everything seemed to be pretty good.
00:30:47
But all of that changed the very next
00:30:49
day when Jim became frustrated with the
00:30:52
family's new stereo system.
00:31:00
And I was having lunch and uh I heard
00:31:03
from downstairs,
00:31:05
a commotion.
00:31:07
I don't like this house. You guys keep
00:31:09
changing things.
00:31:10
Well, if you got a problem with the
00:31:11
stereo, I mean, let's talk about it, you
00:31:13
know? I mean, you don't have to throw a
00:31:15
a temper tantrum. I mean, are you 5
00:31:17
years old?
00:31:18
No, I'm four. Get out of my face, you
00:31:20
idiot.
00:31:21
Yeah. I said, "Hey, you know, if you're
00:31:23
not feeling well, you should go to the
00:31:24
hospital." But he said that he wasn't
00:31:26
going to go to the hospital. He take
00:31:28
care of things. So we cleaned things up
00:31:31
and then and then he left and that was
00:31:34
last I saw him.
00:31:36
[Music]
00:31:37
Jim vanished. The Kimbles launched a
00:31:39
frantic search of the neighborhood.
00:31:41
Yeah, we could try Steve's the community
00:31:43
living center.
00:31:44
Didn't have any medication with him. He
00:31:46
had no money, no coat. It was rather
00:31:49
cold out. And it just almost seemed that
00:31:51
he went and just took a walk and never
00:31:53
came back.
00:31:56
The family made phone calls, searched
00:31:58
homeless shelters, and distributed
00:32:00
missing person's flyers all across the
00:32:03
country. 11 months went by with no sign
00:32:06
of Jim.
00:32:08
The first promising lead came from
00:32:10
Southbend, Indiana, some 90 mi from
00:32:13
Jim's home in Oak Park. Sir, come here
00:32:16
for a minute, please.
00:32:18
You got anything to drink today?
00:32:20
Nope.
00:32:21
Why don't you have a seat in the car? He
00:32:23
appeared to be under the influence,
00:32:28
but the result of the test showed 00 on
00:32:30
the alcohol sensor.
00:32:32
Okay, you're 00. I'd prefer if you were
00:32:34
going to hitchhike.
00:32:36
When I saw the flyer, I'd say 3 to 4
00:32:38
weeks later. The picture on the flyer
00:32:41
matched the description of the
00:32:44
individual I had spoke with.
00:32:47
It really worries me that he's out there
00:32:50
and might not be able to take care of
00:32:52
himself.
00:32:54
We really want to have Jim back with us.
00:32:57
We want him to know that we love him and
00:32:59
care about him and want to help him
00:33:00
through his problems.
00:33:03
Jim's family is still searching for him
00:33:06
and they're worried that without
00:33:07
medication, he will never find his way
00:33:10
home.
00:33:11
Jim Kimble is 5' 7 in tall and weighs
00:33:15
165 lbs. He has green eyes and his brown
00:33:19
hair may still be long and parted in the
00:33:22
middle.
00:33:24
Coming up, the ashes of an unknown woman
00:33:27
are discovered on an isolated California
00:33:30
island.
00:33:40
Kansas City, Missouri.
00:33:42
This is Julie Cooper. With her is Tim
00:33:45
Santi, the man who rescued her from a
00:33:48
childhood that she says was a living
00:33:50
nightmare.
00:33:52
When Julie was just 6 years old, her
00:33:55
parents joined a religious cult called
00:33:58
the Decloud family. The leader of the
00:34:01
sect was a charismatic ex police officer
00:34:04
named Nelson Decloud.
00:34:06
White in the blood of the lamb.
00:34:08
Amen.
00:34:10
Nelson thought that he was um God's son.
00:34:15
Not really that he was Jesus Christ, but
00:34:17
that he was one of God's sons and that
00:34:20
he couldn't do any wrong.
00:34:22
Julie says that by the time she was 10,
00:34:25
the cloud was demanding to have sex with
00:34:28
her.
00:34:30
What I want you to do, Julie, is what
00:34:32
God wants you to do. You understand me?
00:34:34
Yes.
00:34:34
All right. According to Julie, she
00:34:36
initially refused, but eventually the
00:34:39
pressure became so great
00:34:41
that she gave in.
00:34:42
Now you listen to me. Do you know how
00:34:44
old Mary was when she had Jesus?
00:34:46
And he says, "Well, are you ready now?"
00:34:49
Of course, you know, after all that had
00:34:51
happened. And I just said, "Yes." You
00:34:53
know,
00:34:55
Julie claims that over the next 12
00:34:57
years, Decloud humiliated, emotionally
00:35:01
tortured, and forced her into sexual
00:35:04
slavery.
00:35:08
Finally, one fall day, Julie made her
00:35:10
escape, helped by Tim Santi, an
00:35:12
electronics repair man. They had met
00:35:15
when Tim visited the compound to work on
00:35:17
the cloud satellite dish.
00:35:21
Last Thursday, I called my friend Tim to
00:35:24
come.
00:35:24
Tim encouraged Julie to go to the
00:35:26
police. They immediately issued a
00:35:29
warrant for Decloud's arrest. But before
00:35:31
he could be captured, Decloud and his
00:35:33
followers disappeared.
00:35:36
I want Nelson to get caught because it's
00:35:38
not fair to anyone else that's up there.
00:35:40
My mom and dad, they need to know that
00:35:43
he isn't the Messiah. He's a criminal.
00:35:46
What he was doing was wrong.
00:35:51
update.
00:35:53
After Julie's story aired, several
00:35:55
viewers from San Angelo, Texas, called
00:35:58
us to say that they had seen Decloud's
00:36:00
wife in the area. The cult had settled
00:36:03
in this farmhouse. When state and local
00:36:06
agents swarm the area, Decloud kicked
00:36:09
out the screen of the upstairs window
00:36:11
and tried to escape.
00:36:13
The deputies approached him and he tried
00:36:16
to wrestle with a few of them briefly.
00:36:18
There are so many law enforcement
00:36:19
officers though that he didn't that
00:36:21
didn't last very long. They uh put the
00:36:23
handcuffs on him and um escorted him out
00:36:25
of the building.
00:36:32
Nelson Decloud was booked at the local
00:36:34
county jail and later brought back to
00:36:36
Liberty, Missouri, where he stood trial
00:36:39
on four criminal counts, including
00:36:41
forcible rape and sodomy. He was
00:36:44
sentenced to spend 220 years in a
00:36:48
Missouri prison,
00:36:54
Santa Cruz Island, California.
00:36:58
Dr. Carrie Stanton was a fascinating
00:37:01
eccentric, a lifelong bachelor and a
00:37:04
member of a wealthy California family.
00:37:07
After he graduated from Stanford Medical
00:37:09
School, Stanton practiced as a
00:37:11
pathologist in New York City. Then when
00:37:14
he was just 34 years old, he left New
00:37:17
York and returned to California to run
00:37:20
the family cattle ranch. It was not a
00:37:23
typical ranch. Stanton's family owned
00:37:26
9/10en of Santa Cruz Island. At 62,000
00:37:31
acres, it is the largest of California's
00:37:34
Channel Islands. When Dr. Stanton's
00:37:36
parents died, he took over.
00:37:39
Carrie Stanton was very protective of
00:37:41
Santa Cruz Island. He used to say that
00:37:43
this island was not his. It was just a
00:37:46
responsibility that was handed down to
00:37:48
him from his parents.
00:37:53
There was one instance in which he was
00:37:55
walking down a beach and he came across
00:37:57
a very large bag of trash.
00:38:01
He actually went through the bag until
00:38:04
he found an envelope and on this
00:38:06
envelope was the name and address of a
00:38:09
very prominent yacht broker in Ventura.
00:38:11
So Carrie Stanton
00:38:14
left the island with this trash bag,
00:38:16
drove up to the yacht broker in Ventura,
00:38:20
to whom this trash had obviously
00:38:22
belonged, and he deposited on the man's
00:38:25
desk, and said, "Excuse me, sir. I
00:38:27
believe you left this on my island."
00:38:32
For Dr. Stanton, Santa Cruz Island was
00:38:34
heaven on earth. He established a
00:38:37
private cemetery exclusively for those
00:38:40
he felt had an important connection to
00:38:42
the island.
00:38:44
There were 14 graves surrounding the
00:38:46
ranch chapel. Then one December day, the
00:38:50
number increased by one. Dr. Carrie
00:38:53
Stanton died at the age of 64.
00:38:59
Dr. Stanton left the entire ranch to the
00:39:02
Nature Conservancy.
00:39:04
Marla, come on over for a second.
00:39:07
One afternoon, an official from Santa
00:39:09
Barbara County discovered an old metal
00:39:11
box in a shed on the ranch.
00:39:13
Take a look at this. What do you think?
00:39:18
And I looked in the box and it was full
00:39:20
of ashes. And I recognized the ashes as
00:39:23
being those of a human human remains.
00:39:28
Let's pour these out and see what we can
00:39:30
find. No one on the island knew anything
00:39:32
about the mysterious ashes. However, the
00:39:35
local corner found a few intriguing
00:39:38
clues. A snap-like clothing fastener
00:39:41
made in the 1940s.
00:39:43
Several false teeth from the 1950s and a
00:39:46
diamondstudded platinum ring dating back
00:39:49
before World War II. the ring.
00:39:52
We believe that it's an elderly female
00:39:54
victim based upon the findings of the
00:39:56
arthritic changes of the bones and the
00:39:58
characteristic of that one particular
00:40:00
wrist bone that uh appeared to be
00:40:02
female.
00:40:05
Was Dr. Carrie Stanton the keeper of a
00:40:07
dark secret? Not likely. He was known as
00:40:11
a compulsive archavist who meticulously
00:40:14
labeled everything.
00:40:16
It is very unlike Carrie Stanton to have
00:40:20
the loose end in particular of human
00:40:24
remains left on Santa Cruz Island. It's
00:40:28
not something that he would do.
00:40:33
So, who was this mysterious woman and
00:40:36
how did her ashes end up in a metal box
00:40:39
in a small shed on this remote island?
00:40:43
All we know is that she died sometime
00:40:45
after World War II and that she was
00:40:47
older than 50. She also suffered from a
00:40:51
slight arthritic condition and wore a
00:40:53
platinum and diamond eternity ring.
00:40:56
The Santa Cruz Island Foundation doesn't
00:40:58
know what to do with her and we very
00:41:01
much would like to do the right thing
00:41:03
and find a place where she belongs. And
00:41:06
if it's on the island, we would like to
00:41:08
see that she's added to the cemetery if
00:41:10
she belongs here.
00:41:12
We want to do the right thing to make
00:41:14
sure that these ashes receive a final
00:41:17
resting place which is appropriate.
