Forensic Files | Slippery Motives | FULL EPISODE | HD | True Crime Procedure Investigation Drama

October 16, 2025 / 21:42

This episode covers the mysterious death of Julie Post, the investigation into her drowning, and the subsequent trial of her husband Ed Post. Key topics include the circumstances of Julie's death, the evidence presented, and Ed's actions before and after the incident.

In June 1986, Ed Post found his wife Julie dead in their hotel bathtub after jogging in St. Louis. The initial autopsy ruled her death as accidental drowning, but investigators raised suspicions due to Ed's behavior and financial motives.

Ed had increased Julie's life insurance shortly before her death and was reportedly having an affair. Witnesses noted his suspicious actions, including introducing himself to hotel staff and his unusual comments during the investigation.

A second autopsy revealed bruises that were not present in the first, leading prosecutors to believe that Julie's death was not an accident. Scientific tests on the towel ring suggested it could not have been pulled off by Julie during a fall.

Ed Post was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. He later accepted a plea deal for second-degree murder, confessing to the crime in exchange for a reduced sentence.

TL;DR

Ed Post was convicted of murdering his wife Julie after evidence suggested her drowning was not accidental.

00:00:26
The medical examiner ruled the death was
00:00:28
by drowning. presumably accidental. But
00:00:32
homicide investigators weren't so sure.

Ed Post met Julie Thigpan when they were
00:01:05
both students at the University of
00:01:06
Southern Mississippi in the 1960s.
00:01:10
They married in 1967, had two daughters
00:01:15
and moved to New Orleans.
00:01:18
Ed went to work in the real estate
00:01:20
business. His outgoing personality and
00:01:24
sophisticated manner made him a
00:01:25
successful salesman right from the
00:01:27
start.
00:01:28
>> I thought Ed was a good fellow. What
00:01:30
you'd expect a real estate salesman to
00:01:32
be. Kind of relentlessly cheerful.
00:01:35
>> After a few years, Ed Post became part
00:01:37
owner of the Wagner Truax real estate
00:01:39
firm. Julie Post also joined the company
00:01:43
and was very successful, selling over a
00:01:46
million dollars of real estate every
00:01:48
year from 1982 on.
00:01:51
In June of 1986, the Posts attended a
00:01:54
real estate convention in St. Louis,
00:01:56
Missouri at the Omni Hotel at Union
00:01:59
Station.
00:02:02
On the morning of June 3rd, Ed Post
00:02:05
decided to go jogging before the meeting
00:02:07
started. He said he drew his wife a bath
00:02:10
and woke her before leaving around 700

00:02:26
>> On his way out, he thanked the hotel's
00:02:28
concierge for a suggestion she made to
00:02:30
the posts the day before.
00:02:32
>> Really wonderful.
00:02:33
>> I'm so glad. It's a wonderful place. If
00:02:35
there's anything else I can do for you,
00:02:37
just let me know.
00:02:39
>> Hello, Siri. Having a nice day?
00:02:40
>> Yes, I am. Thank you. Have a nice run.
00:02:42
>> Sure. Ed Post jogged past Bush Stadium
00:02:47
around the city's famous arch and
00:02:49
returned to the hotel at 7:40.
00:02:52
>> How was your run, sir? Was
00:02:54
>> great. That's terrific. Had a great
00:02:56
workout this morning. Have a nice day,
00:02:58
sir.

00:03:03
>> When he entered his hotel room, he said
00:03:06
he discovered his wife lying face down
00:03:08
and unconscious in the bathtub.
00:03:21
After pulling her body from the water,
00:03:23
he called for an ambulance at 7:43.
00:03:26
>> Bathroom. Could you send an ambulance,
00:03:27
please?
00:03:29
>> It looked as if Julie Post lost her
00:03:31
footing and grabbed the towel ring which
00:03:34
pulled out of the wall.
00:03:36
At the hospital, Julie Post was
00:03:38
pronounced dead. She was 39 years old.
00:03:42
The autopsy revealed that death was due
00:03:45
to drowning. Ed Post immediately phoned
00:03:49
his brother, who was a lawyer. Together,
00:03:51
they photographed the broken towel ring
00:03:53
and wall mount for a lawsuit against the
00:03:55
hotel.
00:03:56
>> His brother told a policeman here in St.
00:03:58
Louis, I'm going to sue him for $450
00:04:00
million. You watch.
00:04:02
Ed Post was convinced that had it not
00:04:05
been for the faulty towel ring, his wife
00:04:08
Julie might still be alive.
00:04:15
After Julie Post was pronounced dead, an
00:04:19
autopsy was performed in St. Louis
00:04:21
before the body was transported to New
00:04:23
Orleans for burial. The autopsy found no
00:04:27
sign of alcohol or drugs in her system.
00:04:31
There were no skull fractures or
00:04:32
bleeding in the brain that would have
00:04:34
been present if the victim had been
00:04:36
struck in the head before drowning. In
00:04:39
short, the pathologist could find no
00:04:41
evidence of foul play.
00:04:44
>> I was certainly not convinced that it
00:04:46
was an accident.
00:04:48
On the other hand, I couldn't prove that
00:04:50
it was anything else.
00:04:53
>> On the death certificate, the manner of
00:04:55
death was undetermined.
00:04:57
When the St. Lewis Post Dispatch
00:05:00
reported the news of Julie Post's death.
00:05:02
There were some interesting reactions.
00:05:06
D. Joyce Hayes was a prosecutor in the
00:05:08
district attorney's office. Her husband
00:05:10
Gary was a detective in the St. Louis
00:05:12
Police Department. D had just read an
00:05:15
article about a woman who was who had
00:05:19
drowned in a bathtub at the Omni Hotel.
00:05:22
And uh she said, "Gary, make sure you
00:05:24
read this. It doesn't sound right to
00:05:26
me." We both read the article and looked
00:05:28
at each other and said, "Nah, no way."
00:05:33
>> The hotel management found it hard to
00:05:35
believe that a 120 lb woman like Julie
00:05:39
Post could have pulled the towel ring
00:05:40
from the wall since the ring had been
00:05:43
designed to withstand more than twice
00:05:45
that weight. We went to the two
00:05:48
adjoining rooms and I probably weighed
00:05:52
close to 220 lbs at the time
00:05:56
with all my weight hung on to both towel
00:05:57
rings in both rooms and neither one of
00:06:00
them gave nothing.
00:06:02
>> Edpost told police that he and his wife
00:06:05
had a very good relationship, but a
00:06:08
background check of the post's finances
00:06:10
revealed an interesting coincidence. We
00:06:13
went to the insurance company
00:06:16
and lo and behold
00:06:19
um I don't know 27 29 days uh prior to
00:06:23
Julie post death Ed had it increased her
00:06:28
insurance like $45 $500,000. Now, this
00:06:30
is a woman who's making uh in the low to
00:06:34
mid $20,000 a year range in salary, and
00:06:39
he's got this $600 $700,000 life
00:06:42
insurance policy on his wife. Uh
00:06:45
that's when I
00:06:47
begin to believe maybe we have something
00:06:49
here.
00:06:50
>> Police also discovered that Ed Post was
00:06:53
enamored with a married woman who worked
00:06:55
in his office. Her name was Kim Otan. On
00:06:59
the day of Julie Post's funeral, Ed made
00:07:03
an unusual request to Kim Otan.
00:07:06
>> Kim Otan had a twin sister. And at the
00:07:09
time of the funeral of Julie, Ed Post
00:07:13
said to Kim Otan, "Maybe when this is
00:07:15
over, you can set me up with your
00:07:17
sister." And that seemed u a most
00:07:20
inappropriate thing to be saying and
00:07:23
particularly saying at the time that
00:07:25
he's alleged to have said it. Police
00:07:27
were also suspicious about the way Ed
00:07:30
Post told the story of finding his
00:07:32
wife's body. The story never varied,
00:07:36
almost as if it had been rehearsed. St.
00:07:39
Louis police tape recorded those
00:07:41
conversations.
00:07:42
And uh then when she came over the edge
00:07:45
of the tub
00:07:47
uh being as wet as she was uh in the
00:07:50
water there was then at that point once
00:07:51
I got her partially out of the tub I was
00:07:53
not prepared for what happened next
00:07:55
which was she literally slid out at that
00:07:57
point.
00:07:58
>> Do you think that she she did hit her
00:08:00
head on on on the front portion? I think
00:08:02
that's because
00:08:03
>> it's the fact that Ed Post in his
00:08:08
golden tongue glib manner
00:08:12
uh came off as a
00:08:16
as a non-aring person that had this
00:08:20
alibi who had everything down pat. I
00:08:24
mean, he didn't change his story one
00:08:26
iota from the first time he told it to
00:08:29
the second time he told it.
00:08:31
And some of the hotel employees noticed
00:08:34
that Ed Post was acting suspiciously on
00:08:36
the morning of the accident. Before
00:08:39
leaving the hotel for his morning run,
00:08:41
Edpost made sure that the concierge knew
00:08:45
who he was, thanking her for a favor she
00:08:48
did for him the day before.
00:08:49
>> I believe you're the one that told us
00:08:51
about the botanical gardens. My wife
00:08:53
finally had a chance to visit there
00:08:54
yesterday. It was spectacular. Really
00:08:56
wonderful.
00:08:57
>> I'm so glad. And the hotel doorman said
00:09:00
that Post introduced himself by name
00:09:03
before going out for his run.
00:09:04
>> Hello, sir. You enjoying your stay?
00:09:06
>> Yes, I am. Thank you. My name is Ed
00:09:08
Post. I'm going on a run this morning.
00:09:10
I'll be gone about 30 minutes. Uh, watch
00:09:12
out for him, please.
00:09:13
>> I sure will. Have a nice run.
00:09:14
>> Sure.
00:09:14
>> You made it a point to say good morning
00:09:17
to the dorman at the hotel. Say who he
00:09:20
was and what room he was in and that he
00:09:22
was going to go out and jog. I mean,
00:09:23
like, it was from the book of Who Cares?
00:09:25
The Dorman didn't care. Why would you do
00:09:28
that?
00:09:30
>> But all of these incidents simply raised
00:09:33
suspicions. Homicide investigators had
00:09:36
no hard evidence that Edpost played any
00:09:39
role in his wife's death.
00:09:42
Investigators decided to conduct more
00:09:45
sophisticated tests on the broken towel
00:09:48
ring to see if a woman Julie Post's size
00:09:52
could have pulled it from the wall
00:09:53
during a fall.
00:09:58
Prosecutors in St. Louis were starting
00:10:01
to wonder whether the death of Julie
00:10:03
Post in the hotel bathtub was truly an
00:10:07
accident. The autopsy did not find any
00:10:10
evidence of foul play. So prosecutors
00:10:13
decided to exume Julie Post's remains
00:10:16
for a second autopsy. She had been
00:10:19
buried in a cemetery outside of New
00:10:22
Orleans. The water table is so high in
00:10:25
New Orleans that most people are buried
00:10:28
in above ground vaults, but Julie Post
00:10:31
had been buried in the ground and her
00:10:34
body was placed in a wooden casket.
00:10:37
Investigators feared that water damage
00:10:39
to the body would be significant. When
00:10:42
they opened the grave, it was almost
00:10:45
completely filled with water.
00:10:47
Fortunately, the foot of the casket was
00:10:49
the part that sunk. Her head was the
00:10:52
only part of her body that was not
00:10:54
submerged in water
00:10:55
>> and her head was in perfect shape. The
00:11:00
casket had collapsed and pushed down and
00:11:02
had pressed flattened her nose from the
00:11:04
pressure, but that was the only
00:11:06
disfiguration from the collapsing of the
00:11:08
casket. Most of the casket collapse had
00:11:10
been at the foot end. The pathologist
00:11:12
who performed the second autopsy found
00:11:14
numerous bruises that were not noted
00:11:17
during the first autopsy. That's not
00:11:19
unusual because some bruising continues
00:11:22
to develop even after death. Ed Post's
00:11:26
attorney said that the additional
00:11:28
bruises prove nothing, that they could
00:11:30
have been caused by the removing of her
00:11:33
organs and bones for donation shortly
00:11:36
after her death. But the pathologist
00:11:39
found two new bruises in a critical
00:11:43
area. The only additional finding at the
00:11:46
autopsy
00:11:48
was an area of bruising that was very
00:11:50
low far down in the back of the head in
00:11:52
the upper neck region. Uh where in a
00:11:55
normal autopsy I usually don't take the
00:11:57
scalp down quite that far.
00:11:59
>> I'm looking at these bruises and as far
00:12:00
as I'm concerned, it's from a thumb and
00:12:03
a hand. If you're holding somebody
00:12:05
underwater, you got to hold them by the
00:12:07
base of the neck if you're if you're
00:12:09
going to drown them. Next, prosecutors
00:12:11
turned their attention to the metal
00:12:13
towel ring found inside the tub next to
00:12:16
Julie Post's body. The towel ring was
00:12:20
attached to metal studs inside the wall
00:12:22
with 1 and 1/2 in screws. The ring and
00:12:26
wall mount had been designed and
00:12:27
manufactured to withstand hundreds of
00:12:30
pounds of force.
00:12:32
Prosecutors hired Bolter Kelsey, an
00:12:34
accident reconstructionist, to attempt
00:12:37
to recreate the accident.
00:12:40
Kelsey conducted his experiments at the
00:12:42
Hotel Omni in a room with an identical
00:12:46
towel ring attached to the wall in the
00:12:48
same way as the towel ring in Ed and
00:12:51
Julie Post's room. And for the test,
00:12:54
Kelsey used a woman who was the same
00:12:56
height and weight as Julie Post. Kelsey
00:13:00
asked the model to simulate a fall by
00:13:03
grabbing onto the towel ring with all of
00:13:05
her weight. Nothing happened.
00:13:08
Then she was asked to wrench the ring
00:13:10
back and forth.
00:13:12
>> Again, nothing happened.
00:13:15
>> What we found was that uh doing some
00:13:18
calculations based on what information
00:13:20
we had on the ultimate strength of the
00:13:21
ring that we could not remove it or a
00:13:25
person couldn't remove it at that size
00:13:27
unless she fell about 64 ft and grab the
00:13:30
towel ring as she went by. And of
00:13:32
course, the hotel room has an 8ft
00:13:34
ceiling, so there's no way that that
00:13:36
could happen. Finally, as a last resort,
00:13:40
Kelsey asked the model to use both hands
00:13:42
to remove the towel ring in any way she
00:13:45
could. After considerable effort, the
00:13:48
ring came off.
00:13:51
>> Concept that Julie Post somehow grabbed
00:13:54
this towel ring during a fall and pulled
00:13:58
it off the wall was impossible. It could
00:14:01
not physically have happened that way.
00:14:04
Next, prosecutors sent an identical
00:14:06
towel ring and wall mount to Dr. William
00:14:09
Wines, a professor of mechanical
00:14:12
engineering at the University of
00:14:14
Nebraska in Lincoln. Dr. Wines was asked
00:14:17
to determine how much force was required
00:14:20
to remove the towel ring from the wall
00:14:22
attachment. Those tests revealed that it
00:14:25
took between 480 and 500 lb of force to
00:14:30
remove it from the wall.
00:14:32
It was also obvious very early on the
00:14:34
testing that those types of modes of uh
00:14:38
force application straight pulls pulls
00:14:40
down clearly didn't match the evidence
00:14:43
that the the deformed toler failed to
00:14:45
ring didn't look anything like the tower
00:14:47
ring in question here
00:14:49
>> the base plate had damage underneath the
00:14:51
stem and on the left side the towel ring
00:14:55
itself also had been damaged
00:14:58
Dr. Wines performed 23 different tests
00:15:02
to reproduce the damage found on the
00:15:04
base plate and towel ring. All without
00:15:07
success.
00:15:09
But on test number 24, Dr. Wines
00:15:13
produced something very close. That test
00:15:16
indicated that the towel ring was
00:15:18
removed from outside the bathtub. Our
00:15:22
conclusion was that it was taken off the
00:15:25
wall by by someone with considerable
00:15:28
strength and it was uh you know the type
00:15:33
of action where one would grab it and
00:15:35
pull outside the tub and it was uh uh
00:15:39
and if you look at the location of it,
00:15:40
it would be consistent for instance with
00:15:42
someone like putting their foot on the
00:15:44
edge of the tub and grabbing the tow
00:15:45
ring and then pulling it off out toward
00:15:48
the outside of the tub. Prosecutors now
00:15:51
had scientific proof that Julie Post
00:15:54
death was no accident.
00:16:01
In 1986,
00:16:03
New Orleans was going through its worst
00:16:05
economic downturn since the Great
00:16:07
Depression. Many local businesses were
00:16:10
affected and real estate was just one
00:16:12
more casualty. Ed Post was 10% owner of
00:16:16
the Wagner Truax real estate business
00:16:18
and was responsible for 10% of the
00:16:21
losses which in 1985 and 86 were
00:16:24
substantial. And the Post's marriage was
00:16:27
going through a downturn of its own.
00:16:30
Friends said that Ed and Julie fought
00:16:32
frequently fights which were sometimes
00:16:34
physical and Kim Otan who worked with
00:16:38
the posts said that Ed Post had made
00:16:40
advances towards her in the months
00:16:42
before Julie's death.
00:16:44
>> I think that Ed fell in love with Kim
00:16:48
Otan. Just him being a free man wouldn't
00:16:51
get Kim. He had to be a free man with
00:16:54
lots of money
00:16:57
to compete with her husband.
00:17:00
And he hatched this plan. Prosecutors
00:17:04
believe that plan was in motion one
00:17:07
month before Julie's death when Ed Post
00:17:09
increased his wife's life insurance.
00:17:21
On June 3rd, 1986,
00:17:24
before going out for his morning run,
00:17:26
prosecutors believe that Post drowned
00:17:29
his wife in the hotel bathtub.
00:17:44
Afterwards, he pulled the towel ring
00:17:46
from the wall, not only to corroborate
00:17:49
his cover story that Julie fell while
00:17:51
holding on to the towel ring, but also
00:17:54
for the money, the potential settlement
00:17:56
from the hotel in a civil lawsuit.
00:18:01
After the murder, Post made sure to
00:18:03
speak with both the hotel concierge and
00:18:06
doormand to cement his alibi. Yes, sir.
00:18:09
Thank you. My name is Ed Post. I'm going
00:18:11
to be going on a run this morning. Thank
00:18:13
you.
00:18:13
>> The whole business with the towering,
00:18:15
which is really what killed him, not
00:18:17
literally, but figuratively.
00:18:20
You know, he had to go pull that off the
00:18:23
wall.
00:18:25
He had to go pull that off the wall so
00:18:27
that he could set up a lawsuit against
00:18:29
the Omni Hotel and get more money.
00:18:33
The greedy sob.
00:18:36
>> 3 years after Julie Post's death, Ed
00:18:39
Post went on trial for firstdegree
00:18:42
murder. Ed Post pleaded not guilty and
00:18:45
took the stand in his own defense.
00:18:48
>> Ed's demeanor on the stand, I think,
00:18:50
could best be described as follows. He
00:18:54
was very well-dressed. He was very
00:18:56
articulate. Spoke uh at a very uh
00:19:00
sophisticated level. Uh including his
00:19:02
use of the language. Um spoke I think uh
00:19:07
far differently than the jurors were
00:19:11
accustomed to speaking or hearing. Uh he
00:19:13
did not speak with a southern accent at
00:19:15
all although he was from New Orleans.
00:19:17
Um, and he came across as as Ed often
00:19:22
came across as condescending.
00:19:25
And I think that um, those things did
00:19:28
not play well.
00:19:30
>> And the scientific experts provided
00:19:32
powerful testimony that Julie Post was
00:19:35
not capable of removing the towel ring
00:19:37
during a fall. It took the jury less
00:19:41
than a day to reach its verdict. Ed Post
00:19:44
was found guilty of firstdegree murder
00:19:47
and was sentenced to life in prison
00:19:49
without possibility of parole. Ed Post
00:19:52
and his attorneys appealed the
00:19:54
conviction. And in a plea bargain, Post
00:19:57
agreed to plead guilty to seconddegree
00:19:59
murder and confessed to the murder of
00:20:02
his wife in exchange for a 30-year
00:20:05
prison sentence that included the
00:20:07
possibility of parole. If he doesn't
00:20:10
take the tower ring off, he gets away
00:20:12
with it. It's just an accidental
00:20:15
drowning.
00:20:17
I mean,
00:20:19
look at how it happened. Almost
00:20:21
everybody classified it as undetermined
00:20:23
or accidental.
00:20:25
But for that, Ed Post would be on his
00:20:27
merry way. He probably sued the army,
00:20:28
got a couple million dollars, and had
00:20:31
700,000 in life insurance.
00:20:34
We wouldn't even know who he was.
00:20:36
In my opinion,
00:20:39
the most important thing uh in the trial
00:20:44
was the science. It was the tile ring.
00:20:47
When you when you can show that it was
00:20:50
red back and forth, back and forth until
00:20:52
it until it broke or until it came
00:20:53
loose. Um that convicted him. If he
00:20:58
would have left that out of there, he
00:21:00
might be a free man today.
