Forensic Files | Body Of Evidence | FULL EPISODE | HD | True Crime Procedure Investigation Drama

October 15, 2025 / 21:42

This episode covers the murder of Carla Brown, the investigation that followed, and the eventual identification of her killer, John Pranty.

On June 21, 1978, 22-year-old Carla Brown was found murdered in her home in Wood River, Illinois. Investigators initially struggled to find evidence, but a crime scene photograph revealed a bite mark that would later lead to a breakthrough.

FBI behavioral analyst John Douglas provided a psychological profile of the killer, suggesting he was an unmarried white male in his late 20s. This profile matched John Pranty, one of the neighbors who had been present when Carla moved in.

After a second autopsy revealed additional evidence, including bite marks, police focused on Pranty. He was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 75 years in prison.

The episode highlights the investigative techniques used to solve the case, including image enhancement technology that uncovered crucial details about the crime scene.

TL;DR

The murder of Carla Brown led to the capture of John Pranty through bite mark evidence and investigative techniques.

00:00:06
On June 21st, 1978,
00:00:09
22-year-old Carla Brown was found
00:00:12
brutally murdered in the basement of her
00:00:14
home.
00:00:17
>> It looked as if the killer had committed
00:00:19
the perfect crime,
00:00:23
and police could find very little
00:00:25
evidence.
00:00:27
But years later, investigators noticed
00:00:30
something on a crime scene photograph
00:00:32
that had previously been overlooked.
00:00:36
The killer had left behind a clue.

00:01:07
22-year-old Carla Brown and her fianceé,
00:01:10
a man we'll call Mark Hart, had recently
00:01:13
purchased a home together in Wood River,
00:01:15
Illinois.
00:01:16
Although the couple had a rocky past,
00:01:19
friends and family saw this as the
00:01:21
beginning of a new phase in their
00:01:22
relationship.
00:01:24
Carla Brown was a beautiful little girl,
00:01:27
grew up into a beautiful young woman,
00:01:29
was very popular in in her hometown in
00:01:31
the Wood River area, had taken some
00:01:33
college classes, had been a high school
00:01:36
cheerleader, was one of those girls that
00:01:38
everybody knew. Girls liked her, guys
00:01:40
liked her. Uh she was just one of those
00:01:42
people that was special and everybody
00:01:45
recognized that. On June 21st, Carla
00:01:48
Brown took the day off from work to
00:01:50
unpack.
00:01:52
Yes, the house is great.
00:01:54
>> And spoke to one of her friends on the
00:01:55
telephone.
00:01:56
>> Maybe we can have you over for dinner.
00:01:58
>> They had talked for a few minutes. In
00:01:59
fact, we even talked about getting
00:02:01
together later on that afternoon.
00:02:02
>> Wait a second. I just heard something at
00:02:04
the door.
00:02:04
>> And Carla interrupted the conversation
00:02:07
and said, "Listen, I'll have to call you
00:02:09
back. I'll see you later. There's
00:02:10
somebody at the door." And that was the
00:02:12
last uh that her friend ever talked to
00:02:14
her.
00:02:16
Around 5:30 that afternoon, Carla's
00:02:19
fiance and his friend stopped by the
00:02:22
house after work when they walked into
00:02:24
the basement, they saw a horrible sight.
00:02:28
Carla
00:02:29
>> Carla was lying face down in a bucket of
00:02:32
water.
00:02:33
>> She had her hands tied behind her. There
00:02:36
was evidence of struggle, a death
00:02:38
struggle in the basement uh and a very
00:02:42
strong suggestion of a sexual rape. But
00:02:45
investigators were confused about some
00:02:48
of the things they saw. There were two
00:02:51
men's socks tied around Carla's neck.
00:02:53
They were tied neatly, inconsistent with
00:02:56
what you would expect to see in a life
00:02:59
and death struggle. The white electrical
00:03:02
cord used to tie the victim's hands was
00:03:04
not tight enough to effectively restrain
00:03:07
an individual during an assault. There
00:03:10
was too much length of cord behind her
00:03:12
to where her hands could come up in
00:03:14
front of her. It would seem like to me
00:03:17
that she would have access to the
00:03:20
attacker given that much freedom with
00:03:24
the length of rope that was tied between
00:03:26
the two wrists.
00:03:28
>> She was found wearing a sweater her
00:03:31
fiance said she would never wear in the
00:03:33
summer. The top button was fastened.
00:03:36
Another inconsistency with a life and
00:03:39
death struggle. The socks around Carla's
00:03:42
neck were from inside the home. The make
00:03:45
to one was found in her fiance's
00:03:47
dresser. The other was under the sofa in
00:03:49
the adjacent room. Under the sofa was a
00:03:53
puddle of water tinted with blood. The
00:03:56
sofa cushions were also wet and there
00:03:58
were blood drops on the floor near the
00:04:00
sofa. In the rafters was a coffee corff
00:04:04
from the kitchen. To homicide
00:04:06
investigators, it looked as if the
00:04:08
coffee corff had been used to rinse
00:04:11
blood from the sofa cushions. The attack
00:04:14
occurred near the sofa and the body was
00:04:16
later moved into an adjacent room and
00:04:19
placed into the barrel of water. The
00:04:22
crime scene staging told investigators
00:04:25
that the perpetrator spent a great deal
00:04:27
of time inside the house after the
00:04:30
murder. But who knew that Carla Brown
00:04:33
was home and alone on the day of the
00:04:35
murder? And who would have felt free to
00:04:38
spend so much time in the home cleaning
00:04:42
up and staging the scene?
00:04:44
Police began their investigation with a
00:04:47
close look at Carla Brown's fiance.
00:04:55
The autopsy report on Carla Brown
00:04:57
indicated death by strangulation.
00:05:00
Although she was found nude from the
00:05:02
waist down, there were no signs of
00:05:04
sexual assault. Investigators were
00:05:07
convinced that the killer spent a great
00:05:10
deal of time in the house after the
00:05:12
murder staging the crime scene.
00:05:15
I didn't know Mark very well, although
00:05:18
they had dated for a number of years,
00:05:21
uh, off and on, and there were times in
00:05:24
their relationship that it wasn't great,
00:05:28
but, uh, she seemed to always be crazy
00:05:32
about him. Anyway,
00:05:34
>> police also questioned two neighbors who
00:05:37
had been sitting in the yard next door
00:05:39
on the day Carla and her fiance were
00:05:41
moving in.
00:05:43
Hey, Carla.
00:05:45
Carla Brown.
00:05:47
I'm John Pranty. We went to school
00:05:50
together. Remember me?
00:05:52
>> Hi. How are you?
00:05:56
[Music]
00:05:58
>> Both men had alibis as to where they
00:06:01
were on the day of the murder, and they
00:06:03
both willingly took lie detector tests
00:06:06
and passed.
00:06:08
With no other leads, police asked the
00:06:11
FBI for a psychological profile of the
00:06:14
killer and turned to FBI behavioral
00:06:16
analyst John Douglas.
00:06:19
>> In my research, we began to break down
00:06:21
crimes by disorganized and organized.
00:06:24
Disorganized means extremely uh sloppy
00:06:27
carelessness on the part of the
00:06:29
offender. Uh the crime could be very
00:06:31
very uh impulsive. Organized means that
00:06:34
there's a high degree and high level of
00:06:35
criminal sophistication on the part of
00:06:38
the subject.
00:06:39
>> To Douglas, this crime scene was
00:06:42
disorganized, an indication that the
00:06:44
killer was inexperienced and probably
00:06:46
had never killed before. He came to the
00:06:49
home with no intention of committing
00:06:51
murder, but did so after some sort of
00:06:54
confrontation or rejection.
00:06:57
Since he spent so much time inside the
00:07:00
home, Douglas believed that he was
00:07:02
familiar with the victim and her routine
00:07:05
and might be living in the neighborhood
00:07:07
or very close by.
00:07:10
Douglas said the killer was an unmarried
00:07:12
white male in his mid to late 20s, high
00:07:15
school educated with a sloppy
00:07:17
appearance. The use of electrical cord
00:07:20
to tide the victim's hands indicated the
00:07:22
killer had taken shop classes or had
00:07:25
vocational training.
00:07:27
Douglas also told investigators that
00:07:30
they may have already interviewed the
00:07:33
murderer and that he was capable of
00:07:35
passing a polygraph test.
00:07:38
>> And then it got kind of spooky. I mean,
00:07:40
I was sitting there and I wasn't sure I
00:07:41
was believing what he was saying after a
00:07:44
certain point. He started talking about
00:07:48
how this individual would react
00:07:51
and what kind of vehicle he'd be driving
00:07:56
and
00:07:57
he started talking about a Volkswagen.
00:08:01
There was a high probability this guy'
00:08:03
be a Volt driving a Volkswagen
00:08:05
and that it would be red or orange in
00:08:08
color.
00:08:09
This led investigators to focus once
00:08:12
again on the two men sitting next door
00:08:15
on the day Carla Brown and her fiance
00:08:17
were moving in school together.
00:08:19
>> But investigators needed more than just
00:08:21
a psychological profile. They needed
00:08:25
hard evidence.
00:08:29
Crime scene technician Alva Bush
00:08:32
remained deeply troubled by the Carla
00:08:34
Brown murder. For one thing, he and his
00:08:37
colleagues could not determine what
00:08:39
caused the wounds on Carla Brown's face
00:08:42
and chin. The first real break in the
00:08:45
case occurred when Bush attended a
00:08:47
seminar on image enhancement at the
00:08:50
University of New Mexico. Dr. Homer
00:08:53
Campbell taught that seminar. He worked
00:08:55
for the state of New Mexico as a medical
00:08:58
investigator.
00:09:00
Dr. Campbell was demonstrating a
00:09:02
photographic technique that uses
00:09:04
cameras, monitors, and computers to show
00:09:07
details of crime scene photographs that
00:09:10
cannot otherwise be seen.
00:09:12
>> This was a technique that had been used
00:09:14
for several years both by engineers in
00:09:18
non-destructive testing of materials and
00:09:21
also by archaeologists
00:09:23
uh looking at aerial photographs to find
00:09:26
uh ancient ruins.
00:09:28
After the seminar, Bush told Dr.
00:09:31
Campbell about the Carla Brown case.
00:09:33
>> And I said, "Doc, do I have a case for
00:09:35
you?" And I told him about the Carla
00:09:38
Brown case and that we were never able
00:09:42
to identify what type instrument had
00:09:45
damaged her face. I asked him to please
00:09:48
send me the photographs uh that they had
00:09:53
uh of the uh deceased person and also to
00:09:56
send me an autopsy report.
00:10:00
Dr. Campbell used his image enhancement
00:10:03
equipment to look more closely at the
00:10:06
crime scene photos of Carla Brown. The
00:10:09
system not only improves the contrast of
00:10:12
the photographs, but can also create
00:10:14
what appear to be threedimensional
00:10:17
views, adding depth to the image. When
00:10:20
Dr. Campbell was through, he knew what
00:10:24
caused the injuries to Carla Brown's
00:10:26
face.
00:10:27
>> He tells me that maybe the TV tray may
00:10:31
have been the instrument that she was
00:10:32
hit in the head with. This TV tray was
00:10:35
lying on the floor within three foot of
00:10:37
the
00:10:39
victim where she had probably been on
00:10:41
the couch, but I had missed it.
00:10:45
>> The tray tables were still in storage
00:10:47
untouched in the two years since the
00:10:50
murder. In an extraordinary piece of
00:10:53
luck, Dr. Campbell found microscopic
00:10:56
traces of blood and hair still present
00:11:00
on the tray table. And what Dr. Campbell
00:11:03
said next was even more revealing.
00:11:07
>> He says, "What about the bite mark?"
00:11:11
And I I said, "Bite mark? What bite
00:11:14
mark? What are you talking about?"
00:11:16
>> When we looked at the photograph and
00:11:18
went ahead and enhanced it and magnified
00:11:21
it. Present on the shoulder was a bite
00:11:25
injury on the shoulder. And by looking
00:11:28
at that bite injury, you could actually
00:11:30
pick out individual teeth all the way
00:11:33
across.
00:11:34
>> I trade that for five eyewitnesses
00:11:36
anytime. So eyewitnesses can make
00:11:38
mistakes. Things like fingerprints
00:11:39
don't. And it was my understanding that
00:11:42
bite marks properly preserved
00:11:45
uh with an identified defendant could
00:11:48
give you the defendant as good as a
00:11:50
fingerprint.
00:11:52
>> The killer had left behind a clue. All
00:11:57
investigators needed now was a suspect.
00:12:04
Two years after the brutal murder of
00:12:06
22-year-old Carla Brown, investigators
00:12:09
got the break they needed when a
00:12:11
photographic enhancement revealed a bite
00:12:14
mark on Carla's shoulder. Police now
00:12:17
turned to the two men sitting in the
00:12:20
yard next door when Carla Brown moved
00:12:23
into her new home. Both matched the
00:12:26
FBI's behavioral profile of the killer.
00:12:29
Police checked their alibis again.
00:12:32
Although both had passed the polygraph
00:12:35
tests, police discovered that John
00:12:38
Pranty had spoken about the murder to
00:12:41
others.
00:12:42
>> John Pranty had mentioned to his friends
00:12:44
that he had seen her body that day, that
00:12:47
he had looked over the shoulder of some
00:12:48
policemen while they were investigating
00:12:50
in the basement, and he described uh the
00:12:53
condition of her body. and he even
00:12:55
mentioned that she had bite marks on her
00:12:56
neck and collar bone.
00:12:58
>> The police were the only ones inside the
00:13:02
house after Carla Brown's body was
00:13:04
found.
00:13:05
>> That was a shock to us as police
00:13:08
officers because there's no way that he
00:13:09
could have known that unless he put the
00:13:11
bite mark there.
00:13:13
Also, the information about the location
00:13:15
of the body, the way the body was found,
00:13:18
the only way that that would have been
00:13:19
known is either to have been there on
00:13:21
the investigation
00:13:23
uh or to have put the body there
00:13:25
yourself because we never released that
00:13:27
information to the public or to the
00:13:29
media.
00:13:30
>> Since the bite marks were overlooked
00:13:33
during the original autopsy,
00:13:35
investigators wanted to make sure
00:13:37
nothing else was missed. So Carla
00:13:40
Brown's body was exumed for a second
00:13:43
autopsy.
00:13:45
This time it was performed by Dr. Mary
00:13:48
Casease, the chief medical examiner for
00:13:50
St. Louis County.
00:13:52
>> In the original autopsy, um there was
00:13:55
the liature strangulation and the body
00:13:58
was examined and for some reason the
00:14:00
head was not examined and so I opened
00:14:02
the cranial cavity and there was
00:14:04
bruising in the scalp. Somebody struck
00:14:07
her on the head. and question is whether
00:14:09
or not for example this blow would cause
00:14:12
loss of consciousness.
00:14:14
>> Dr. Casease thought that Carla Brown may
00:14:17
have been alive when she was placed in
00:14:19
the barrel of water because when she was
00:14:22
found there was foam around her mouth
00:14:25
>> because she was in water and she was
00:14:27
producing that foam.
00:14:30
I feel like there may be some component
00:14:33
of drowning that she was still um even
00:14:36
though she'd been strangled that she was
00:14:38
still maybe to a minimal degree uh
00:14:40
breathing because I I believe that she
00:14:43
may have breathed in some water.
00:14:45
>> During the autopsy, more photographs
00:14:48
were taken of the suspected bite wounds
00:14:50
which were sent to the New York State
00:14:52
Police Forensic Unit for an independent
00:14:55
evaluation.
00:14:56
Prosecutors wanted to make sure that the
00:14:59
mark on Carla Brown's neck was in fact a
00:15:02
bite wound.
00:15:03
>> In my opinion, the pattern injury uh on
00:15:07
Carla Brown's neck had all the
00:15:09
characteristics that a bite mark would
00:15:11
have.
00:15:12
>> Dr. Lavine was asked to compare the bite
00:15:14
wound to three different dental casts
00:15:17
prosecutors sent along for analysis. Dr.
00:15:21
Lavine had no idea to whom the casts
00:15:24
belonged.
00:15:26
After making wax impressions of the
00:15:28
models, Dr. Lavine concluded that two of
00:15:31
the models were not consistent with the
00:15:34
bite wound.
00:15:35
>> I took the third model and examined all
00:15:39
the uh individual characteristics that
00:15:43
those teeth would have caused. compared
00:15:46
those characteristics with the
00:15:49
characteristics on the clarified
00:15:50
photograph of Carla Brown's neck uh that
00:15:55
I had and came to the opinion that only
00:15:58
that model was consistent with having
00:16:01
caused uh that pattern injury or that
00:16:04
bite mark.
00:16:05
>> He measured the teeth. He went back to
00:16:07
the photograph. He turned them different
00:16:09
ways. He held them up in the air.
00:16:12
Finally, he laid the dental impressions
00:16:14
on the table and he pointed to him and
00:16:16
he said, "That's your man."
00:16:19
>> Model number three belonged to John
00:16:23
Pranty.
00:16:25
Interestingly, Pranty also matched John
00:16:28
Douglas's psychological profile. He was
00:16:32
in his late 20s, had a history of
00:16:34
troubled relationships with women. He
00:16:36
attended industrial art school and had a
00:16:39
sloppy, unckempt appearance. Pranty
00:16:42
spent a great deal of time in the
00:16:44
neighborhood, often visiting his friend
00:16:46
who lived next door to Carla Brown.
00:16:50
And just as John Douglas had predicted,
00:16:53
Pranty had passed an earlier polygraph
00:16:56
test, the most unusual aspect of
00:17:00
Douglas's profile was the prediction
00:17:02
that Pranty would be driving a red
00:17:05
folkswagen.
00:17:08
Uh, where that came from, only John
00:17:10
could say, but in fact did turn out that
00:17:13
the individual did have a Volkswagen.
00:17:16
>> Prosecutors believe that when Carla
00:17:18
Brown's fiance left for work, John
00:17:22
Pratty walked over and knocked on the
00:17:24
door.
00:17:24
>> Maybe we can have you over for dinner.
00:17:26
>> Carla was talking on the telephone.
00:17:28
>> I understand.
00:17:30
>> Hello.
00:17:30
>> Wait a second. I just heard something at
00:17:32
the door. Let me call you back.
00:17:36
[Music]
00:17:40
What do you want?
00:17:41
>> Need some help moving in?
00:17:43
>> I want you to leave. Come on.
00:17:45
>> Why don't we talk a little?
00:17:46
>> I want you to leave now.
00:17:50
>> There was some kind of argument or
00:17:51
struggle, possibly after she had
00:17:53
rejected Tranty's sexual advances. He
00:17:56
forced her into the basement and hit her
00:17:58
with a tray table.
00:18:03
At some point, he bit her on the
00:18:06
shoulder and strangled her.
00:18:09
Afterwards, he staged the scene to make
00:18:12
it appear to be a sexual assault.
00:18:16
But when he changed her clothes, he made
00:18:19
the mistake of fastening the top button,
00:18:22
the first clue that the scene had been
00:18:25
staged.
00:18:30
He tied her hands with electrical cord,
00:18:34
wrapped the socks around her neck,
00:18:37
[Applause]
00:18:40
and placed her into the water while she
00:18:43
was unconscious but still alive.
00:18:50
Pranty tried to remove the blood stains
00:18:52
on the sofa with water he carried from
00:18:54
the kitchen in the coffee carff which he
00:18:56
left in the rafters above the sofa.
00:19:02
The clothes Carla was wearing that day
00:19:05
were never found. Pranty may have taken
00:19:07
them as a trophy.
00:19:10
In July of 1983,
00:19:13
John Pranty was tried and convicted of
00:19:16
firstdegree murder and was sentenced to
00:19:19
75 years in the state penitentiary.
00:19:23
After five long years, Carla Brown's
00:19:27
family finally had some closure. I would
00:19:30
like to tell him that he he took away a
00:19:34
very wonderful person um who had a lot
00:19:37
to offer and a and a family who cared
00:19:41
very much about Carla and that it was
00:19:45
very
00:19:47
very selfish of him to to not consider
00:19:52
uh another person's life uh as as
00:19:57
something as something that can just be
00:19:59
thrown thrown away
00:20:02
uh
00:20:04
on a on a particular day.
00:20:06
>> He got caught because the techniques of
00:20:10
investigation and law enforcement
00:20:12
completely overpowered him. He got away
00:20:15
with the crime because he was lucky. He
00:20:17
got caught because law enforcement
00:20:20
changed his luck.
00:20:22
Don Weber along with journalist Charles
00:20:25
Bosworth chronicled the many ups and
00:20:27
downs of this case in a best-selling
00:20:30
book, Silent Witness.
00:20:32
>> Carla's family was so intrigued by the
00:20:34
pipe mark evidence that uh she
00:20:37
embroidered a little tapestry that she
00:20:39
presented to Don Weber as a token of her
00:20:41
appreciation. And it offers the slogan
00:20:44
that Don had used that you can lie
00:20:46
through your teeth, but your teeth don't
00:20:48
lie. And around the border is the uh
00:20:52
pattern of rectangle space rectangle
00:20:55
space triangle which is the bitemark
00:20:57
pattern that Don had proved had been
00:21:00
made by John Pranty.
