The House that Roared | S1 E3 | Forensic Files | FULL EPISODE

March 03, 2025 / 22:42

This episode covers the disappearance of Karen Campano, her tumultuous marriage to Christopher Campano, and the subsequent investigation into her murder.

On July 1, 1992, after an argument about his drug use, Karen left their home in Oklahoma City and was never seen again. Christopher reported her missing the next day, but police found evidence of foul play, including a large blood stain in their bedroom.

Investigators used luminol to reveal extensive blood spatter throughout the house, indicating a violent attack. DNA analysis later confirmed the blood belonged to Karen, leading police to suspect Christopher's involvement.

Eight months after her disappearance, Karen's body was discovered in a remote area. Forensic evidence supported the theory that Christopher had murdered her during a domestic dispute.

In January 1994, Christopher Campano was tried and found guilty of manslaughter, receiving a sentence of 1,000 years in prison.

TL;DR

Karen Campano disappeared in 1992; evidence revealed her husband Christopher murdered her after a violent argument.

00:00:11
on a hot summer evening in
00:00:13
1992 neighbors heard the familiar sound
00:00:16
of an argument coming from the compano
00:00:19
residence what I'm I
00:00:26
promise according to Christopher compano
00:00:29
his wife left the house shortly after
00:00:31
their argument to calm
00:00:37
down Karen campano was never seen again

00:01:14
Karen keano was just two weeks shy of
00:01:17
her 43rd birthday when she
00:01:20
disappeared she had just come back to
00:01:22
Oklahoma City after visiting her three
00:01:24
children who were living in New York
00:01:27
back to the home she shared with her
00:01:29
third husband Chris she come back from
00:01:32
New York and she went to talking about
00:01:35
moving back because of her
00:01:38
family and uh she's upset Chris and
00:01:42
Karen campano were married in December
00:01:44
of
00:01:45
1987 friends described them as an Odd
00:01:48
Couple she was 15 years older than Chris
00:01:52
and it was her third marriage his first
00:01:55
they were introduced to one another by
00:01:57
Karen's best friend who also happened to
00:02:00
be Chris's
00:02:02
mother Chris was a Drifter worked
00:02:05
construction jobs and spent some time in
00:02:07
jail for petty
00:02:09
theft Karen was the main wage earner
00:02:12
working as a bill collector for this
00:02:14
credit adjustment company in
00:02:16
town on the evening of July 1st
00:02:19
1992 Chris and Karen had one of their
00:02:22
frequent arguments this time over his
00:02:25
use of drugs and I was into drugs and
00:02:28
and uh she was you know nagging at me
00:02:32
and trying to get me in drug programs
00:02:35
and you know just trying to help it was
00:02:38
loud enough for the neighbors to hear I
00:02:40
could hear a Karen screaming and no
00:02:44
please please and don't do that and
00:02:46
couldn't make out a lot of what was
00:02:47
being said just a lot of screaming
00:02:49
according to Chris after the argument
00:02:52
Karen left the house for a walk headed
00:02:54
to the Buy For Less convenience store
00:02:56
for some personal items a few blocks
00:02:59
away
00:03:01
Chris left too driving to a local bar
00:03:03
for a few drinks staying until about
00:03:06
midnight the next morning Chris called
00:03:08
Karen's office to see if she had
00:03:10
reported to work her supervisor said she
00:03:14
hadn't shown up or even called in Chris
00:03:17
then phoned the police to report her
00:03:18
missing when the police arrived to take
00:03:21
Chris's statement they looked around
00:03:23
briefly and reported seeing no evidence
00:03:26
of Foul Play or anything out of place or
00:03:29
unusual if a person is going to run away
00:03:32
or or leave her
00:03:34
husband she's not just going to walk
00:03:36
away and leave everything behind she's
00:03:37
going to take the things that mean the
00:03:38
most to her especially when you're
00:03:40
dealing with a woman things of you know
00:03:42
toiletries makeup and that kind of thing
00:03:45
and of course we found all those things
00:03:47
intact in the bedroom in the bathroom
00:03:50
and it was if she just disappeared off
00:03:52
the face of the Earth without taking
00:03:53
anything with her while the police were
00:03:56
there Chris mentioned that the house had
00:03:58
been burglarized night before while he
00:04:00
was out drinking and that some items
00:04:03
were missing police asked Chris to sign
00:04:05
a waiver to allow a search of the house
00:04:08
and he agreed to do so and and thought
00:04:11
that would be good and even commented
00:04:13
that he hoped that we found something in
00:04:15
the house that would help us with the
00:04:17
investigation the first thing I recall
00:04:19
seeing is is the bed was against the
00:04:21
South wall and right next to the bed was
00:04:24
a large white trash bag and underneath
00:04:26
that trash bag I could see a very large
00:04:29
brownish colored stain of course the
00:04:31
next thing we did was uh went and got
00:04:33
some Hema sticks which we carried in our
00:04:35
vehicle a Hema stick is a chemical strip
00:04:38
that can immediately tell whether or not
00:04:41
blood is present take the dry Hema
00:04:43
stick and with your finger just lightly
00:04:46
smear it on the suspect stain to where
00:04:49
some of it's transferred on the Hem
00:04:50
stick take a drop of distilled
00:04:55
water put it on the heem stick flick off
00:04:58
the excess water and you have a dark
00:05:00
green which is a positive presumptive
00:05:03
test for the presence of blood the stain
00:05:05
on the carpet was indeed blood but was
00:05:08
it human and if so whose was it the
00:05:11
first day we were in the house u i put
00:05:14
on a pair of gloves and that spot on
00:05:16
that carpet was still moist this piece
00:05:18
of carpet and the padding was completely
00:05:20
soaked with blood it was such a massive
00:05:23
amount of blood that there was still
00:05:25
actual moisture involved there it was
00:05:26
not completely dried the carpet was
00:05:29
removed and delivered to the Oklahoma
00:05:30
City Police Department's forensic
00:05:32
chemistry lab I went on to do a um
00:05:36
octone test is a spey determination test
00:05:40
to determine as to whether or not that
00:05:42
blood came from a human or an animal
00:05:44
Source it was human blood that was
00:05:47
enough to convince me that we weren't
00:05:48
dealing with a routine missing person's
00:05:50
case the police needed more to go on and
00:05:53
felt the answers lay inside the compano
00:05:56
house
00:06:00
when police discovered human blood
00:06:02
inside the compano bedroom they
00:06:04
suspected the blood stain might belong
00:06:06
to Karen compano they also suspected
00:06:09
that Chris knew more about her
00:06:11
disappearance than he was admitting she
00:06:13
left at
00:06:15
7:30 what did you do
00:06:17
then under police questioning Chris
00:06:20
maintained that he knew nothing about
00:06:22
his wife's whereabouts but his Alibi was
00:06:24
weak the bartender didn't recall seeing
00:06:27
Chris compano on the night of July 1
00:06:30
and police discovered that Chris had
00:06:32
pawned some of Karen's jewelry the
00:06:34
morning after her disappearance without
00:06:37
a body the only thing left for the
00:06:40
police to do was run more tests inside
00:06:43
the house there weren't any visible
00:06:45
signs of violence besides the blood
00:06:47
stain they found in the bedroom we saw a
00:06:50
typical little frame house for central
00:06:52
Oklahoma City that uh as you went inside
00:06:55
looked quite clean quite neat things had
00:06:56
been cleaned out of it walls looked
00:06:58
clean ceiling clean the floor looked
00:07:00
clean so there wasn't much to see at all
00:07:02
so they decided to look for blood which
00:07:04
may have been cleaned up or wasn't
00:07:07
visible to the naked eye to do so
00:07:10
investigators used a special chemical
00:07:12
solution called luminol an extremely
00:07:15
sensitive test which can detect blood
00:07:17
which has been removed by water or even
00:07:20
detergents and bleach luminol is a
00:07:22
fluorescence type chemical spray it on a
00:07:24
substance that contain that may contain
00:07:25
blood it reacts with the heem group in
00:07:27
the blood itself the iron portions uh
00:07:30
will uh lumines or flues to do the
00:07:33
luminol test investigators needed
00:07:36
complete darkness so they waited until
00:07:40
Nightfall they began their chemical
00:07:42
dragn net in the bedroom where they
00:07:45
discovered the stain on the carpet a few
00:07:48
days earlier first they took photographs
00:07:51
of the room the way it looked to the
00:07:53
naked eye then they sprayed the luminol
00:07:57
the results were astonishing there were
00:08:01
some instances in that house where it
00:08:03
glowed so brightly that you could
00:08:05
actually see the person standing next to
00:08:06
you there was so much blood in there the
00:08:08
luminol told a horrific tale blood had
00:08:13
been everywhere on the walls the ceiling
00:08:18
on the doors it looked like a blood bath
00:08:21
had occurred there something from a
00:08:23
horror movie even more telling was the
00:08:26
blood spatter which is the placement of
00:08:29
the stains where they were located the
00:08:32
size of the drops and the trails of
00:08:35
blood all told a story someone had been
00:08:40
beaten in the bedroom with a blunt
00:08:43
object they were in uh two Trails what
00:08:46
we refer to as castoff Trails so if if
00:08:48
you had an object for example in your
00:08:50
hand uh and that object was blood
00:08:53
covered and if you were swinging that
00:08:54
object
00:08:55
overhead the centrifugal force of
00:08:58
pulling the blood down to the end of the
00:08:59
object will cast the blood in the
00:09:02
direction the object is being swung and
00:09:03
in this case it's going to the
00:09:06
[Music]
00:09:09
ceiling there are two distinct trails
00:09:12
and uh you can tell that uh there's at
00:09:14
least two Swings with a blood covered
00:09:16
object luminol was then applied to the
00:09:18
rest of the house and even to the
00:09:20
outside steps and walkways at one point
00:09:24
there's a swipe of blood that was on the
00:09:27
kitchen door leading into the util room
00:09:30
that would have been about head level if
00:09:34
you were carrying a body and had to turn
00:09:36
the body sideways to get it through a
00:09:37
normal door and then at that point it
00:09:40
appeared the body was laid down on the
00:09:42
ground and then drug from the utility
00:09:45
room down the back steps and you could
00:09:47
see pulled luminescence on each step and
00:09:50
then drag marks that were luminescent
00:09:53
all the way down the walkway until you
00:09:54
got to the point that you were at the
00:09:56
driveway and at that point they
00:09:58
disappeared
00:09:59
very very dramatic presentation the
00:10:02
house was telling its Story one of an
00:10:06
apparently gruesome attack but there
00:10:09
were still unanswered
00:10:12
questions where was the body and the
00:10:16
weapon and was the blood Karen
00:10:19
campanos police still couldn't prove a
00:10:23
murder had been
00:10:27
committed although the police knew
00:10:29
someone was violently attacked inside
00:10:32
the compano residence they couldn't be
00:10:34
sure a homicide had been committed was
00:10:37
there enough blood in the compano house
00:10:40
to prove that someone was dead and was
00:10:43
that someone Caren campano the
00:10:46
investigators uh at a later time decided
00:10:49
that we'd go back and try to do a
00:10:50
measurement test to see how much blood
00:10:53
had to been let out on that carpet to
00:10:55
make that size of a stain police made
00:10:58
sure their test was as accurate as
00:11:00
possible they used a piece of the
00:11:02
original carpet as well as a weight to
00:11:05
simulate a human head next they poured
00:11:09
human blood around the weight until they
00:11:11
created a stain measuring 887 Square in
00:11:16
the same size stain they originally
00:11:19
discovered statistically one could say
00:11:22
that between 1300 and 1400 cc's of blood
00:11:26
would create that would create that
00:11:27
stain that's more more than 40% of the
00:11:30
blood volume of a woman Karen Ceno's
00:11:33
size no one could survive with that
00:11:36
amount of blood loss so at that point it
00:11:38
became pretty apparent to me that if
00:11:42
this lady was missing and if this lady
00:11:43
was dead that this lady probably was
00:11:46
killed right there the authorities now
00:11:49
knew a homicide had been committed in
00:11:51
the house and that someone had died in
00:11:54
the bedroom in a pool of blood but was
00:11:57
the victim Karen compano police didn't
00:12:01
have a sample of Karen Cano's blood to
00:12:04
compare to the blood stain if Karen's
00:12:06
mother and father were still living it
00:12:09
would have been a simple matter to
00:12:10
examine their DNA since Karen would have
00:12:13
received half of her DNA from her mother
00:12:16
and half from her father but Karen's
00:12:18
father was
00:12:20
deceased the Oklahoma City Police
00:12:22
Department asked the FBI to get involved
00:12:25
to see if there was any way they could
00:12:27
figure out whether the blood found in
00:12:29
the house belonged to Karen campano the
00:12:33
police obtained blood samples from
00:12:35
Karen's mother her two sisters her three
00:12:37
children and one of her ex-husbands and
00:12:40
so in this particular case the object of
00:12:41
the examination was to see if this DNA
00:12:45
from the blood stain of Unknown Origin
00:12:48
was matching at least half of the DNA
00:12:51
was matching to the relatives from Karen
00:12:53
campano Hal Deadman of the FBI's DNA
00:12:56
analysis unit conducted what is called
00:12:59
rflp analysis analyzing pieces of DNA
00:13:03
from four different chromosomes this is
00:13:06
the DNA profile of Karen cmo's mother
00:13:10
and next to it on either side are two of
00:13:13
her daughters Karen cmo's sisters both
00:13:16
daughters share half of their DNA with
00:13:18
their mother this Lane shows a DNA
00:13:21
sample from one of Karen compano
00:13:24
ex-husbands the next Lane shows a sample
00:13:27
from his son whose mother was was Karen
00:13:29
compano the Father and Son both share
00:13:32
the upper band the son would have
00:13:35
received the lower band from his mother
00:13:37
which matches the band from his
00:13:39
grandmother Karen's mother the next Auto
00:13:41
rad compares the family member's DNA to
00:13:44
the unknown blood stain found in the
00:13:46
compano home the top marker matches the
00:13:50
genetic profile from the first of Karen
00:13:52
compano children and the markers from
00:13:55
the blood stain also matched the bands
00:13:58
from Karen compan two other children
00:14:00
from another marriage results were were
00:14:02
fairly
00:14:04
straightforward um they were totally
00:14:06
consistent with the blood coming from
00:14:08
Karen compano 8 months after The
00:14:10
Disappearance of Karen compano police
00:14:13
concluded that Christopher compano
00:14:16
murdered his wife and was arrested all
00:14:19
of the evidence pointed towards Chris
00:14:22
compano the forensic evidence the
00:14:24
argument neighbors heard on the night of
00:14:26
Karen's disappearance Chris's lack of an
00:14:29
alibi for the entire evening and the
00:14:31
fact that he pawned some of her things
00:14:35
the prosecution believed that Karen
00:14:37
campano never left her house for a walk
00:14:41
as her husband had
00:14:44
suggested neighbors heard Karen and
00:14:46
Chris arguing that night and the
00:14:48
forensic evidence suggests that the
00:14:50
argument moved to their
00:14:51
bedroom where it escalated and turned
00:14:54
violent
00:15:07
[Music]
00:15:11
as Chris stood near the window he struck
00:15:13
Karen in the head with a blunt object at
00:15:16
least three times possibly more
00:15:19
producing the castoff blood Trails on
00:15:22
the ceiling and
00:15:23
walls Karen fell to the floor her head
00:15:26
striking the bed post where her blood
00:15:28
was also found as Karen lay bleeding
00:15:31
from her massive head injuries Chris
00:15:34
left and went to a local bar he needed
00:15:37
to wait until the neighbors were asleep
00:15:39
before removing Karen's
00:15:41
body when he returned home he wrapped
00:15:44
Karen's body in a sheet with a telephone
00:15:46
wire and carried her through the house
00:15:49
luminol test showed that Karen's head
00:15:52
brushed against the door leaving a blood
00:15:54
smear later cleaned with detergent
00:16:01
Chris then dropped the body onto the
00:16:03
floor and dragged it through the side
00:16:05
door and out towards the
00:16:14
car he probably disposed of her body
00:16:17
late that night in a deserted
00:16:24
location after returning home Chris
00:16:27
removed all visible traces of blood both
00:16:30
inside and
00:16:32
out the DNA analysis showed the blood
00:16:35
found on the carpet belonged to Karen
00:16:38
campano and the medical examiner would
00:16:41
testify that Karen compano suffered
00:16:44
horrendous head injuries during the
00:16:46
attack which no one could survive
00:16:49
prosecutors were confident of a
00:16:51
conviction even though they didn't have
00:16:54
a body or a murder weapon well I thought
00:16:57
it was very likely we might never find
00:16:58
the body of the victim but just as the
00:17:00
preliminary hearing was set to get
00:17:03
underway everything
00:17:06
changed the police found Karen
00:17:16
campano this part right here wasn't
00:17:18
quite so grown up with all this Ivy and
00:17:20
she was laying right down there by that
00:17:22
large cottonwood tree uh north to south
00:17:26
and there were some blankets around her
00:17:27
there was no Greenery at that time if
00:17:30
there had been Greenery at that time
00:17:31
you'd never know she was there the body
00:17:34
lay in a remote area off a major
00:17:36
interstate highway until some youngsters
00:17:39
on dirt bikes stumbled across it all we
00:17:42
knew was that we had a female's body out
00:17:45
there we had no idea who it was of
00:17:49
course we were hoping it was Karen but
00:17:51
we didn't
00:17:52
know there was another important find
00:17:55
police discovered a piece of a check
00:17:57
underneath the body
00:18:00
although they couldn't determine to whom
00:18:01
the check was issued it was from the
00:18:03
Shell Oil Company and mailed to someone
00:18:07
in New York the check was for
00:18:11
$83.33 Karen campano was from New York
00:18:14
and her family had a part interest in a
00:18:16
gas station there this was the first
00:18:19
definitive piece that we
00:18:22
had that we knew at that point there was
00:18:26
a great possibility that it was caring
00:18:28
and of course we wouldn't know for sure
00:18:29
until they made identification through
00:18:31
dental records and DNA Dr Tom glass
00:18:34
heads the forensic odontology department
00:18:37
at the University of Oklahoma with the
00:18:39
help of Karen Ceno's dental records and
00:18:42
an almost complete set of teeth found in
00:18:44
the skull of the body Dr glass's task
00:18:47
was fairly easy what I do in making the
00:18:50
comparison then is simply go frame by
00:18:53
frame by
00:18:55
frame of the patients an morm Dental
00:18:58
x-ray the x-rays made by the dentist
00:19:01
with the frames of the same areas made
00:19:05
on the skeleton eyes remains she had a
00:19:08
very thorough dentist who documented
00:19:10
what he had done and that documentation
00:19:14
allowed the identification in Kieran
00:19:16
Capo's case to be very profound and a
00:19:19
DNA analysis of the bone marrow
00:19:21
confirmed it the last doubts had been
00:19:25
removed personally I'm glad she was
00:19:28
eventually found because of the family
00:19:30
back in New York I talked to him at
00:19:32
length over the
00:19:34
phone later on during the investigation
00:19:36
I met them U they're really great people
00:19:40
and I I really had strong feelings for
00:19:42
them hoping one day she would be found
00:19:44
so they could put their own fears to
00:19:46
rest and give her a decent burial and
00:19:48
Christopher compano
00:19:51
confessed the remarkable thing about it
00:19:54
the autopsy confirmed the prosecution's
00:19:57
theory of how Karen died and that theory
00:20:02
remember was based only on the luminol
00:20:05
the blood spatter analysis and the blood
00:20:08
volume tests the maxilla were fractured
00:20:11
the mandibles were fractured the nose
00:20:12
was fractured the sinuses were fractured
00:20:14
the skull was extensively fractured yet
00:20:16
the cervical spine was intact and there
00:20:18
were only three fractures in the ribs so
00:20:20
this is not the Hallmark of somebody
00:20:21
that's been run over by a car or
00:20:23
somebody who's at a train wreck or or
00:20:25
something like that this is the Hallmark
00:20:27
of someone who has sustained a severe
00:20:29
beating about the head and face so it
00:20:32
was obvious that this was an assault
00:20:34
police and forensic science had solved a
00:20:37
difficult puzzle it all told a story it
00:20:40
was just more of the pieces of the
00:20:41
puzzle coming together even all the way
00:20:44
to the end when the body was actually
00:20:46
found it's like you know we've got most
00:20:49
of the puzzle there you know what it is
00:20:51
even with some missing pieces you know
00:20:53
what it is but then what that body found
00:20:55
was like that was the very last piece
00:20:58
that that just fit in there in January
00:21:01
of
00:21:02
1994 a year and a half after Karen was
00:21:06
killed Christopher compano went on trial
00:21:09
for his life his defense attorney
00:21:11
couldn't refute the forensic findings
00:21:14
they were just too strong once I had
00:21:16
decided to make that leap and embrace
00:21:19
the evidence uh then my task became
00:21:21
easier it was a matter then of of
00:21:23
looking at the psychological aspects of
00:21:25
the case rather than the hard forensics
00:21:28
the case I suggested to the judge and
00:21:31
jury if it was going to be deliberately
00:21:33
planned out and methodical that kind of
00:21:35
blood wouldn't be there there would been
00:21:38
none in the house probably the homicide
00:21:40
would have occurred elsewhere if it had
00:21:42
been a coldblooded killing the jury
00:21:44
bought at least part of the argument it
00:21:47
found compano guilty of manslaughter not
00:21:51
the first-degree murder charge the state
00:21:53
was seeking I feel sorry for it feel
00:21:56
sorry for what I did to her can't bring
00:21:59
her back you know I just got to pay for
00:22:01
what I've done Christopher compano was
00:22:04
sentenced to 1,000 years in prison
