The Origin of the Between Two Beers Podcast

November 17, 202307:46
00:00:00
often a long time without any sort of
00:00:02
reward in terms of you know for the work
00:00:04
you're putting in yeah there's some stat
00:00:06
that I don't know 90% of podcast don't
00:00:08
make it past episode seven and because
00:00:11
it starts off with a hiss and a Roar and
00:00:12
you got all these good ideas and then it
00:00:14
kind of turns into a job which is why
00:00:17
people ask like what's your advice for
00:00:19
people starting off with the podcast do
00:00:20
it for the right reasons do it because
00:00:22
it's something you enjoy doing which is
00:00:24
why we started in my garage talking to
00:00:27
our best mates and our family about
00:00:28
football and
00:00:30
if it wasn't for that we would have
00:00:32
stopped after if it wasn't fun you know
00:00:34
there was no thought of financial reward
00:00:36
or no thought of audience it was just
00:00:38
about yeah it was a chance to get out
00:00:41
once a week it wasn't even actually we
00:00:42
li it wasn't even once a week then it
00:00:44
was just a chance to get out get in
00:00:46
front of someone put a microphone in
00:00:47
front of them and then ask them a bunch
00:00:48
of questions which we never really had
00:00:50
done so it kind of gives you license to
00:00:53
pry into people that you know's lives
00:00:55
with um without a care in the world yes
00:00:57
I came from a good place by the way I
00:00:59
listened to that episode today episode 1
00:01:01
November 2019 um with Aaron Scott who's
00:01:04
Aaron Scott MOS a soccer guy football
00:01:07
guy he's a Grassroots football legend so
00:01:09
he just played in The chadam Cup Final
00:01:10
he's got four kids he's played 350 games
00:01:13
for Melville he's in the chadam Cup
00:01:14
Final they lost on penalties but a guy
00:01:17
who we'd grown up with he played for the
00:01:19
all whites he should have gone to the
00:01:20
World Cup but just got dropped from the
00:01:22
squad so we asked him about how hard
00:01:25
that was and he talked about Ricky
00:01:27
Herbert and the Fallout and all these
00:01:28
things Have you listened no I haven't it
00:01:31
rough as guts I listened back so did you
00:01:33
listen to it today yeah just just today
00:01:34
and there's there's it's it's quite um
00:01:37
it's quite cute like there's a lot of
00:01:38
what you're doing now that's exactly the
00:01:40
same yeah um like at the beginning
00:01:42
Sheamus you say how you know the person
00:01:44
yeah um but then there's like real cute
00:01:47
aspects of it like it sounds like
00:01:48
there's one microphone yes yes correct
00:01:52
but I mean like it's it's palatable the
00:01:54
sound is fine but from where you are now
00:01:57
like four years on to back then sh [ __ ]
00:02:00
it's um I'm I'm getting actually
00:02:01
Goosebumps just um talking about this
00:02:04
and sharing this you've come such a long
00:02:05
way we we spoke for about the first 15
00:02:08
minutes think that Aaron didn't say a
00:02:10
word for 15 minutes we were just like
00:02:12
prattling on about who we were and what
00:02:14
we were what we were doing and then
00:02:16
finally it was like well let's get a
00:02:17
chance to hear from the guest Aaron but
00:02:19
yeah [ __ ] it's a long way and we had a
00:02:21
moment I think like history's repeated
00:02:24
itself so Melville Stevens have been in
00:02:26
the chadam Cup Final recently as well
00:02:28
which was a catus for getting ezer on
00:02:29
the show and um yeah hell it's a long
00:02:32
way away from Steven's garage that's for
00:02:33
sure that's what it was you you say it
00:02:35
sounded like a One mic for the first 50
00:02:38
episodes it was in my garage it was a JB
00:02:42
high-fi $200 Omni microphone and we just
00:02:45
sat around a table like this and Shay
00:02:47
was drinking I was drinking with you
00:02:49
know the the conversations maybe got a
00:02:51
bit looser as the it went on I probably
00:02:52
drank more than than I did now but yeah
00:02:55
it was just trying to ask the best
00:02:57
questions to anyone we could get into my
00:03:00
garage basically and yeah there's others
00:03:02
other things that have changed um like
00:03:03
from a life perspective since then like
00:03:05
at the time you Steve you mentioned you
00:03:07
got two kids now you got four kids and a
00:03:09
viomy four kids and a dick that doesn't
00:03:12
Works enough yeah it's quite so so so
00:03:14
back
00:03:15
then by the way we we'll go all the way
00:03:18
back to how you guys even know each
00:03:19
other how this um Bromance if you call
00:03:21
it that began but um so there was no no
00:03:24
intention this was just like a hobby
00:03:26
something for you to do we have done or
00:03:28
did you did you see ly like deep down
00:03:30
have a desire to Rog in it no not at all
00:03:34
it was we we were both quite involved in
00:03:37
the Melville football club and we did a
00:03:38
few videos before we started a podcast
00:03:40
we did this video series where we would
00:03:42
chat to the coaches who are also our
00:03:44
best mates and we quite enjoyed it and
00:03:46
we'd always thought like oh [ __ ] man we
00:03:48
should do something we should start a
00:03:49
podcast we should start a show I didn't
00:03:51
know what a podcast was when we started
00:03:54
like totally totally true and yeah and
00:03:56
it wasn't until I bought the microphone
00:03:58
$220 was was a lot of money back then
00:04:00
probably still is now but um I was like
00:04:02
oh [ __ ] it I've bought the microphone
00:04:04
we're going to do it and then I was like
00:04:05
right Aaron come come across to our
00:04:07
house on Thursday night no expectation
00:04:09
of anything it literally just let see
00:04:11
what happens we it didn't even go out on
00:04:13
Spotify or apple podcast it was just
00:04:14
uploaded to SoundCloud I think at the
00:04:16
time like not even on YouTube Just
00:04:18
SoundCloud I think and we just L around
00:04:22
yeah and maybe YouTube actually without
00:04:23
the video anyway just total amateur
00:04:25
operation but there was enough there was
00:04:27
I don't know 50 people listen to it
00:04:29
maybe and the who who were they just
00:04:30
friends how did you how did you Market
00:04:32
it just on your social media account I
00:04:34
can't even remember Facebook just put it
00:04:35
on our Facebook on our Facebook page and
00:04:38
um CU because Aaron's quite a known
00:04:40
person in Hamilton football circles like
00:04:42
he's he's quite a big deal in a for a
00:04:44
small group of people so just yeah our
00:04:46
friends listened to it and got some good
00:04:48
feedback so episode two was Paul Nixon
00:04:51
who was my former school teacher and
00:04:53
coached me when I was growing up and
00:04:55
this was kind of so Paul Paul had four
00:04:58
kids and his wife passed away
00:05:00
and I you know I invited him to my
00:05:02
wedding he didn't turn up he got the day
00:05:04
wrong he got the day wrong he turned up
00:05:05
the day after but I knew him really well
00:05:08
but there were topics like that and it's
00:05:10
kind of been a theme when you put a
00:05:11
microphone in front of someone it gives
00:05:13
you permission to ask questions that you
00:05:15
probably wouldn't otherwise and I
00:05:16
remember talking to him about that how
00:05:19
what it was like raising four kids after
00:05:21
his wife died of cancer and it just I
00:05:24
was like [ __ ] they're on to something
00:05:25
here like it just real conversation real
00:05:28
deep meaningful conversation and yeah it
00:05:30
was like we we started I think stepen
00:05:32
you sent me a link
00:05:34
to um what's old mate's name tools of
00:05:37
Titans oh Tim Ferris Tim Ferris and it
00:05:39
was like a section of a podcast of his
00:05:42
which spoke about asking good questions
00:05:44
so I think initially it was like we'd
00:05:47
each come up with 10 questions and that
00:05:49
was kind of it and we just we just
00:05:52
rocked it from there and it was it was a
00:05:54
kind of a had a cult following within
00:05:56
like Northern League football circles
00:05:58
and then it kind of grew through to New
00:06:00
Zealand football circles and then it
00:06:02
just yeah it kind of gathered momentum
00:06:04
and I don't even remember our first
00:06:06
non-f footb guest was Chris Ru I think
00:06:08
who was again one degree of separation
00:06:11
worked columnist at the hill joural who
00:06:13
work who worked with Steven so it was
00:06:16
really just who do we know and who would
00:06:18
be interested to come in and that was
00:06:20
that was the kind of the length of it
00:06:22
right so was it when did you start to
00:06:24
think okay we could we could probably
00:06:26
scale up here and do something good I
00:06:28
think it was Murray we made a trip to
00:06:30
Eric Murray's house so up until then we
00:06:33
had been a football show and we were
00:06:34
Nobody But Eric Murray and I always
00:06:36
think of these guys who opened their
00:06:38
door to us when there was nothing for
00:06:40
them to game there was no platform for
00:06:42
them he said come over to my house in
00:06:44
Cambridge bring some beers and we'll
00:06:46
have a yarn and we went over there with
00:06:47
a dozen beers I think he drun about 10
00:06:49
of them and in the first 15 minutes as
00:06:52
well he was hoovering he's he's he's a
00:06:54
big boy though he was up for he was up
00:06:56
for the chat big dick energy was a term
00:06:59
coined for Eric Murray like that guy has
00:07:02
just the the most like upbeat full on
00:07:05
energy and it was an awesome episode and
00:07:07
I was like holy [ __ ] if we can get one
00:07:08
of our greatest ever Olympians to open
00:07:10
up like that that transcends football
00:07:13
and Sport this that's going to appeal to
00:07:15
everyone and it got a bit wider reach
00:07:18
than normal got some good like Twitter
00:07:20
was quite big for us back then I think
00:07:21
like guy Havel or someone like that
00:07:23
shared it on Twitter and like that was a
00:07:25
big moment for us because you know he
00:07:27
had thousands of followers and it's just
00:07:29
really slow small little gains but
00:07:32
mostly it just put fuel in our tank like
00:07:34
[ __ ] that was
00:07:36
[Music]
00:07:43
fun
