He highlights the need for frequent communication with various constituencies, drawing on lessons from CEOs who navigated the financial crisis. Clear communication about the realities facing the country is essential for effective leadership.

The challenges for the new House leader are outlined, including the necessity of building unity within the party and across the aisle. The leader must execute a vision and strategy to achieve governance goals.

00:00:17
a good question to start with is in
00:00:19
light of the dramatic results of this
00:00:21
election what should the Obama
00:00:23
Administration be doing and in
00:00:24
particular what should the president
00:00:25
take
00:00:26
on and briefly I would suggest the
00:00:29
following if I were to sit in the Oval
00:00:31
Office and he would say Mike what's next
00:00:33
I would say uh this Friday let's do an
00:00:36
after action review let's look back on
00:00:38
what happened over the last two years
00:00:40
what went right what in your view went
00:00:43
wrong and looking at the next two years
00:00:46
what can be done better going forward in
00:00:49
light of the fact that this set of
00:00:50
election results said things have not
00:00:52
gone as well as you certainly would have
00:00:54
hoped that they did go call it the after
00:00:56
action review call it a kind of a reset
00:00:59
button but let's take a good look
00:01:01
backwards to be more clear-minded on how
00:01:03
we should go forward next two years I
00:01:06
think in terms of uh a really good
00:01:08
question here on what should Obama do
00:01:11
when it comes to communicating with the
00:01:12
American public and his various
00:01:14
constituencies actually internationally
00:01:16
as well as
00:01:17
domestic I'll draw on a project I did
00:01:20
last couple years with two colleagues on
00:01:23
what company CEO said they did do in
00:01:26
getting through this huge financial
00:01:28
crisis of ' 089
00:01:30
two points stand out I think from that
00:01:31
research that bear on what Obama might
00:01:33
want to take on going forward number one
00:01:37
the uh fifth we talked to 15 Chief
00:01:39
Executives who' gone through that
00:01:40
wrenching period and they said number
00:01:43
one that they learned to be brutally
00:01:48
clear about what is happening to get at
00:01:51
the reality of what's around them to
00:01:54
accept and in fact identify the huge
00:01:57
problems that the country is facing in a
00:01:59
in the president's case here and to say
00:02:02
that so A a big doise a big dose of
00:02:06
realism here is vital number two the
00:02:09
chief Executives do say that in that
00:02:12
crisis getting people through that
00:02:14
crisis
00:02:16
frequent put it more aggressively more
00:02:18
frequent communication with the key
00:02:21
groups upon whom they depend to get
00:02:23
their job done vital so for the chief
00:02:26
executive of a company the board of
00:02:28
directors the bigest investors the
00:02:30
customers the employees and the
00:02:32
community for Barack Obama vital to be
00:02:36
aggressively communicating going forward
00:02:38
now uh with the voters with the country
00:02:41
leaders outside the US certainly with
00:02:44
the house and the Senate going forward I
00:02:47
think in terms of leadership challenges
00:02:48
that the new leader of the house uh will
00:02:51
undoubtedly face are really in my view
00:02:56
to uh when we say leader it means means
00:03:00
that the person now at the top of the
00:03:02
house has to make things happen for the
00:03:05
house as part of our governance process
00:03:08
here and with a um internally divided
00:03:12
party and big divisions with the
00:03:14
opposition party uh the new leader of
00:03:16
the house is going to have to work real
00:03:18
hard to build a common ground uh within
00:03:22
his party and then across the the aisle
00:03:24
there and then number two it's obvious
00:03:27
as soon as I say it uh leadership is
00:03:30
getting things done of having a vision
00:03:33
and then executing around that with a
00:03:34
good strategy to get anything done in
00:03:37
the United States as a house leader
00:03:39
you've got to work with the US Senate
00:03:41
you've got to work with the White House
00:03:43
and so the new leader of the house has
00:03:45
in most likely it'll be he uh will have
00:03:48
his house his H work cut out for him in
00:03:51
creating Unity within the party and in
00:03:52
building consensus across the divide in
00:03:55
the uh within the Congress uh within the
00:03:58
house then with the Senate and then with
00:04:00
the White House you know in this issue
00:04:03
of how the te party has been able to
00:04:05
mobilize so successfully and so many
00:04:07
constituencies the votes they needed to
00:04:09
get their candidates elected to office
00:04:13
what comes to mind is research done
00:04:15
actually many years ago
00:04:17
on social protest movements on the right
00:04:21
that is what has driven uh the emergence
00:04:24
of right-wing or very conservative
00:04:25
movements in American history going back
00:04:28
an analysis that I think is correct is
00:04:31
that when people are feeling
00:04:33
dislocated and not optimistic about
00:04:36
their future they are more prepared to
00:04:38
go to um not extreme ideologies but
00:04:41
ideologies or thoughts that are often at
00:04:44
one end of the spectrum uh they move
00:04:46
away from the center and to me anyway I
00:04:49
think this the Tea Party is a reflection
00:04:51
of the of the profound
00:04:53
unease that so many people feel about
00:04:56
where the us is going in the world
00:04:58
economy profound about the fact that
00:05:00
their real earning power has been flat
00:05:02
for better than a decade now uh and
00:05:05
obviously huge uncertainty about where
00:05:08
our economy is going put those factors
00:05:10
together we may or may not agree with uh
00:05:13
the way they articulate what they want
00:05:16
done but I think much of the energy of
00:05:18
the Tea Party Movement is coming out of
00:05:20
the fact that our economy very uncertain
00:05:23
very unclear where it's going to go and
00:05:25
for many people it's been a very hard
00:05:28
period for
