Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 7, Episode 20 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 51:21

This episode covers unsolved mysteries including the Christmas Eve 1983 car accident in Mexico, the phenomenon of the mysterious hum, and the escape of inmate Randolph Dial.

The episode begins with a recounting of a tragic car accident involving the Dover family from Atlanta, Georgia, who were traveling to Mexico for Christmas when they lost control of their vehicle during a freak snowstorm. Fortunately, two American doctors happened upon the scene and helped save the lives of the family members.

Next, the episode discusses the mysterious hum that has been reported by over a thousand people worldwide. Individuals like Hal Rooney Anand and Sarah Allen share their experiences with this persistent sound, which many believe may be linked to military communication systems.

Finally, the episode highlights the escape of convicted murderer Randolph Dial from an Oklahoma prison, along with Bobby Parker, the deputy warden's wife. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance raise questions about whether she was abducted or willingly left with Dial.

Throughout the episode, viewers are encouraged to assist in solving these intriguing mysteries.

TL;DR

A family survives a car accident in Mexico, mysterious hums plague many, and inmate Randolph Dial escapes with the deputy warden's wife.

00:02:35
imagine being plagued by the sound a
00:02:39
loud annoying hum that grinds away
00:02:41
incessantly day after day night after
00:02:43
night incredibly more than a thousand
00:02:46
people throughout the world reporting
00:02:48
just such a phenomenon and it's driving
00:02:50
them to destruction the thing I noticed
00:02:54
about it was it didn't change the sound
00:02:56
didn't change like it was getting closer
00:02:57
or further away or slowing down or
00:03:00
speeding up it was just a steady droning
00:03:02
sound there is a little bit of a whine
00:03:05
somewhere in the background here and
00:03:07
it's a it's kind of like the air is
00:03:09
sizzling I've been hearing the hum for
00:03:12
about five years it sounds like a diesel
00:03:15
engine running parked away but yet it
00:03:17
has a physical effect it seems to make a
00:03:20
sound rest and that's in their sternum
00:03:22
in our thorax area it causes a vibration
00:03:24
temporal lobe lobe and actually causes
00:03:27
ear pain at times and paint on the
00:03:29
earlobes Pal Rooney Anand moved from
00:03:34
Detroit to Michigan's northern peninsula
00:03:36
hoping to escape the hustle and bustle
00:03:38
of suburban living but instead of peace
00:03:41
and tranquility he'll soon found himself
00:03:43
tormented by the hum it began as a minor
00:03:49
annoyance while Hal was studying for a
00:03:51
trade school entrance exam I noticed it
00:03:57
a few times before I was studying but
00:03:59
thinking that it was a motor it wouldn't
00:04:01
bother me that much
00:04:05
but then I noticed it affecting how I
00:04:08
could focus and how I could concentrate
00:04:09
that's when it really started agitating
00:04:12
me so I was able to ignore it maybe for
00:04:14
the first month or two but after a while
00:04:17
when I got closer to the deadline of
00:04:19
this entrance exam I started noticing
00:04:21
this thing is really affecting how I'm
00:04:23
studying it's really affecting my
00:04:24
thought process and how I'm taking in
00:04:26
information and it got to where I
00:04:27
couldn't tolerate it anymore and I had
00:04:29
to know what it was the first few nights
00:04:34
I went out looking for it I went to the
00:04:36
natural places that you would think a
00:04:37
hum was coming from I checked out the
00:04:39
sewage pumping stations the airport the
00:04:42
ventilation systems on top of Michigan
00:04:44
Tech University any place that would
00:04:46
generate a sound finally I was driving
00:04:51
like a hundred miles a night in one
00:04:53
direction looking for it
00:04:54
no matter where I went the intensity was
00:04:56
always the same okay I have a tuning
00:05:00
fork and I'm just gonna sort of get an
00:05:02
idea of how well your ears line up with
00:05:05
each other so the first we brought how
00:05:08
to Los Angeles to visit dr. Eugene flows
00:05:10
one of the nation's leading ear nose and
00:05:13
throat specialists he'll was found to be
00:05:20
suffering some hearing loss but there
00:05:22
was nothing specific that might explain
00:05:24
the bizarre hum from what we learned
00:05:31
today we can't prove one way or the
00:05:33
other whether there are extraneous
00:05:34
sounds in the environment or within him
00:05:37
those sounds in the environment might be
00:05:39
perceived by him differently than they
00:05:43
really are because of things going on in
00:05:47
his system I'm certain that I'm feeling
00:05:49
something from an outside source I'm a
00:05:51
yoga teacher massage therapist or offer
00:05:53
I've studied acupuncture I'm very aware
00:05:55
of the sounds that my body makes and I
00:05:57
know this isn't my body producing this
00:06:00
many people have suggested that I might
00:06:02
be picking up the electrical fields from
00:06:04
the local power grid so what I'd like to
00:06:06
do is go down into the caves and get
00:06:07
completely underneath it and see if I
00:06:09
can get away from the
00:06:10
Electrical Fields has tried just about
00:06:16
everything to escape the auditory
00:06:18
onslaught even braving the deep tunnels
00:06:21
of an old abandoned copper mine near his
00:06:23
home what he'll finally be at peace we
00:06:29
soon had our answer now I hear it I hear
00:06:39
it louder it's more penetrating it's
00:06:47
actually conducting through my bones
00:06:49
more forcefully than it does on the
00:06:51
surface
00:07:00
disappointing very disappointing
00:07:06
I thought I could get away from it down
00:07:08
under all this problem it's worse this
00:07:16
is a tape I developed as a simulation of
00:07:19
the phenomenon as I experienced it I'm
00:07:21
gonna play it Sara
00:07:22
Ellen has been hearing the hum for three
00:07:24
years I am then I experienced it out but
00:07:27
just so that you can hear kind of what
00:07:29
it sounds like that's what I'm going to
00:07:31
do
00:07:38
now the volume level that I hear it at
00:07:41
is much more like that so you bring it
00:07:43
down to the minimum and then you turn it
00:07:46
up until you can just perceive it which
00:07:50
is right there
00:07:53
and that's how it's in my environment
00:07:55
all the time whenever it's quiet
00:07:58
whenever there's a quiet moment I'm in
00:07:59
meditation or something I have to share
00:08:02
my space with this and it's not
00:08:05
comfortable
00:08:08
Sarah Allen lives in Taos New Mexico
00:08:11
which literally hums with activity since
00:08:14
1989 dozens of local residents claimed
00:08:17
to have heard the irritating sound sara
00:08:22
is a radio broadcast engineer she first
00:08:25
experienced the hum in 1992 after she'd
00:08:28
been dispatched to repair a transmitter
00:08:30
it was Sarah's knowledge of electronics
00:08:33
that later enabled her to recreate the
00:08:35
noise so that non sufferers would know
00:08:38
exactly what it sounded like
00:08:46
we played Sarah state for Winona witted
00:08:49
of nearby Santa Fe New Mexico
00:08:55
that's very close very very close
00:09:00
tell me buddy that's very close it's uh
00:09:05
it's it's a little it's quite a lot more
00:09:08
pleasant and then the then the jagged
00:09:12
grinding glass sensation that or sound
00:09:18
that would come through for Winona five
00:09:23
years of constant humming is completely
00:09:25
disrupted her life she is currently on
00:09:28
disability leave from her job with a
00:09:29
national park service like many
00:09:32
sufferers Winona takes comfort in the
00:09:34
knowledge that she is not alone in no
00:09:39
fewer than 10 countries on five
00:09:41
different continents people have been
00:09:43
hearing a similar low-frequency sound
00:09:45
most often described as a truck laboring
00:09:48
up a hill today many of the
00:09:52
low-frequency suffers belong to an
00:09:54
international network dedicated to
00:09:56
finding the cause of the hum we call
00:10:01
ourselves hearers but actually we don't
00:10:03
really feel like we're hearing we feel
00:10:05
like we're sensing and none of us we're
00:10:07
not protesters or we're not activists
00:10:10
it's it's not like we want to take the
00:10:11
day off of work and study physics and
00:10:13
electromagnetic resonance but it's
00:10:15
driving us nuts and we have the support
00:10:17
and exchange of information that we need
00:10:19
with each other and that's really been
00:10:21
helpful we began to keep notes not so
00:10:24
much a logbook of every day because it's
00:10:26
there every day you write in the law
00:10:27
gets there today you know and that's
00:10:29
about all you can say about it what we
00:10:33
did start noticing was the intensity
00:10:34
increases which seemed to track
00:10:38
international events mostly whenever the
00:10:42
United States is involved militarily
00:10:43
somewhere the intensity seems to
00:10:46
increase
00:10:49
the hearers have come to believe at the
00:10:52
hum may be caused by a radio system
00:10:54
known as e.l.f for extremely low
00:10:56
frequency the Navy developed a LF to
00:10:59
better communicate with the nation's
00:11:01
submarine fleet but a sub is underwater
00:11:05
it cannot receive standard radio waves
00:11:07
however low frequency signals are
00:11:10
capable of penetrating through hundreds
00:11:12
of feet of water to reach vessels on the
00:11:14
ocean floor perhaps not coincidentally
00:11:17
the system has been in use since the
00:11:20
late 1980s around the time the people in
00:11:23
the u.s. first began to hear the hum I'm
00:11:27
fairly convinced that it is military not
00:11:30
only because of my own research into it
00:11:33
in my own reading and my own theories
00:11:35
but because of feedback I've gotten from
00:11:38
scientists from people in the Armed
00:11:42
Forces or who have armed forces
00:11:44
connections and other people like I
00:11:47
can't name but who have come forward to
00:11:49
me and who have pretty much verified my
00:11:52
theories at least in principle recently
00:11:57
a team of scientists was commissioned to
00:11:59
find the source of the hum they traveled
00:12:02
at hours with some of the most
00:12:03
sophisticated sound and radiation
00:12:05
sensing equipment available in the end
00:12:09
the scientists were unable to find
00:12:11
anything dramatic or unusual at Taos
00:12:13
that might explain the hum however they
00:12:16
did conclude that the hum is a quote
00:12:18
bona fide scientific mystery that
00:12:20
deserves additional inquiry I'm hearing
00:12:25
the hum now and we have days where it
00:12:28
isolates on different sides and today it
00:12:30
seems to be oscillating more on the
00:12:31
right side of my body
00:12:32
I don't believe how you can't hear it
00:12:41
what is a source of the mysterious hum
00:12:43
could it be Els or is it possible that
00:12:47
more than a thousand people around the
00:12:49
world are imagining the same thing it is
00:12:55
interesting to note that there is an e
00:12:56
LF transmitting station just 80 miles
00:12:58
from Hal Rooney Ana's house in Michigan
00:13:01
however there is not a known station or
00:13:03
than 1,500 miles of Taos tour now the
00:13:06
hum remains a mystery for those who
00:13:08
cannot hear it
00:13:09
and a major source of aggravation for
00:13:12
those who can
00:13:18
[Music]
00:13:23
on a previous broadcast we brought you
00:13:26
the poignant story of the Stallings
00:13:27
family of Tipton Oklahoma a family so
00:13:30
poor that in 1948 Lila Stallings her
00:13:33
husband and their six children were
00:13:35
forced to live in an old school bus in
00:13:39
spite of the terrible hardships Lila
00:13:41
valiantly struggled to maintain a home
00:13:43
belief that was as normal as possible
00:13:47
thank you we always had something to do
00:13:51
and we had toys to play with and each
00:13:54
other to play with so we don't we didn't
00:13:57
think of ourselves as being different
00:14:00
however the authorities felt otherwise
00:14:03
Lila and her husband were eventually
00:14:05
charged with child neglect
00:14:09
the charges would later be dropped but
00:14:12
not before all of the Stallings children
00:14:14
were placed in foster homes two of them
00:14:20
Mary and Joe were reunited in 1959 since
00:14:24
then they have done everything possible
00:14:26
to find their brothers and sister only
00:14:28
to be thwarted time after time I've
00:14:32
tried every avenue that I have came
00:14:37
before me to try and locate these
00:14:40
presents history
00:14:43
and I'll never quit until the last day
00:14:48
in my life
00:14:53
unsolved mysteries appeared to be the
00:14:55
last hope and happily the day after our
00:14:57
broadcast 35 years of frustration came
00:15:00
to an end for John Mary a man named Li
00:15:03
Shu lien of Owasso Oklahoma called our
00:15:05
phone center he identified himself as
00:15:08
Ernest Lee Stallings it was only five
00:15:10
when the family was split apart Lee was
00:15:13
thrilled to hear that his brother and
00:15:14
sister were looking for him and was
00:15:16
anxious to meet them three weeks later
00:15:22
Lee arrived at a hotel in Tulsa Oklahoma
00:15:25
to be reunited with Jo you know the two
00:15:28
brothers had not seen each other in
00:15:30
nearly half a century
00:15:33
[Music]
00:15:40
no no that's what I heard
00:15:43
how describe it it's such a wonderful
00:15:47
feeling about I'm definitely against
00:15:53
walking in this morning he walked in and
00:15:57
we met hugged each other no bike and
00:16:05
realized the feeling separated too many
00:16:11
years about 40 47 I really didn't know
00:16:16
how I was going to react you know we've
00:16:19
been separated 46 years
00:16:21
I felt a lot better than what I thought
00:16:23
I might I was really you know felt real
00:16:27
good too hugging we've already started
00:16:31
making us some plans to get together go
00:16:34
fishing so we've got a future ahead of
00:16:38
us to be together and enjoy each other
00:16:46
sadly Jo and Lee's sister Mary was
00:16:49
unable to attend the reunion however she
00:16:51
has spoken with Lee on the phone and
00:16:53
they plan to get together in the very
00:16:55
near future at Judy
00:16:57
right yeah
00:16:59
[Music]
00:17:21
when we return a family is rescued from
00:17:24
a terrifying accident by two anonymous
00:17:27
strangers
00:17:31
[Music]
00:17:37
it is a traveler's worst nightmare
00:17:40
you're in a foreign country driving
00:17:43
along a dark winding road with almost no
00:17:46
visibility and suddenly lose control of
00:17:49
your car
00:17:51
[Applause]
00:17:53
that exact scenario came horribly true
00:17:56
with an over family of Atlanta Georgia's
00:17:58
some 12 years ago they were in Mexico on
00:18:01
their way to celebrate Christmas with
00:18:03
relatives when the journey was cut short
00:18:05
by an unexpected disaster a disaster
00:18:07
that overs miraculously survived thanks
00:18:10
to the selfless heroism of two anonymous
00:18:12
strangers
00:18:16
the adventure began two days before
00:18:19
Christmas in 1983 along for the trip for
00:18:23
Joe Dover his son Vance his
00:18:25
father-in-law James cousin tongue
00:18:28
Tommy seven-year-old son David and a
00:18:31
close family friend Mary Ann pretending
00:18:36
[Music]
00:18:40
there's a real warm atmosphere we were
00:18:42
all because we were all related we're
00:18:44
all friends we talked and we you know we
00:18:49
ate in the van coming down we played
00:18:51
games and just really had a real warm
00:18:53
warm time coming down we had dis
00:19:06
purchased a new customized van and it
00:19:08
was loaded with everything we had a
00:19:10
television then we had a refrigerator so
00:19:13
we were stocked up and just make an
00:19:15
extremely good time and having a good
00:19:16
time the drive from Atlanta to the city
00:19:20
of Ciudad Victoria Mexico was about 1200
00:19:23
miles the Dover's hope to complete the
00:19:26
trip in 48 hours and arrive by Christmas
00:19:28
Day to save time they stopped only for
00:19:31
gas and the adults took turns driving
00:19:33
[Music]
00:19:36
now we left on Friday afternoon and we
00:19:40
drove all day and all night we got into
00:19:43
Rio Texas Saturday morning which was
00:19:46
Christmas Eve and across the border the
00:19:49
further along we got hit in the
00:19:52
afternoon it really began to get cold
00:19:54
and began to snow the weather was
00:19:57
getting really bad and I had been to
00:19:59
Mexico several times in the past and I
00:20:02
had never experienced anything like this
00:20:04
in my life it was extremely cold rainy
00:20:06
snowy it was just very uncharacteristic
00:20:09
for the area by the time the Dover's
00:20:13
crossed the border
00:20:14
the Vance was behind the wheel they were
00:20:16
now an hour outside of Monterey the last
00:20:19
major city before their final
00:20:20
destination they're supposed to go over
00:20:24
a mountain range to get to the city and
00:20:26
then we were diverted there was a
00:20:28
policeman in the road
00:20:33
hi well no we need to go to Monterey
00:20:36
what are they scared of that he's not
00:20:38
sitting up what I yeah with his father
00:20:40
translating from the backseat advanced
00:20:43
learned that the main road through the
00:20:44
mountains had been closed and we had to
00:20:48
circle around the on the mountings can
00:20:50
come into Monterey from a more easterly
00:20:52
direction and the snow began to really
00:20:56
pick up and it was a real driving snow
00:20:58
it didn't want coming to straight down
00:21:00
him and the size of the road began to be
00:21:02
coated we could see it on the heels
00:21:07
slowed down a little bit everybody a
00:21:09
second little bit slick out there okay
00:21:12
we're trying to be extremely cautious
00:21:13
because the road conditions were really
00:21:15
getting getting pretty bad and my father
00:21:18
had just told me to even be extremely
00:21:21
careful and just moments after he had
00:21:23
told me that suddenly lost control
00:21:32
I don't know how much time of laughs I
00:21:40
don't know how long I was out I have no
00:21:42
idea if it was five minutes or an hour
00:21:44
but I woke up and it was just a matter
00:21:49
of moments when someone opened the door
00:21:51
and pulled me out and the pain that I
00:21:54
felt that that time was absolutely
00:21:56
scruciating as Vence was pulled from the
00:21:59
wreckage he was unaware of the carnage
00:22:01
surrounding him the four occupants of
00:22:04
the other vehicle had been killed
00:22:05
instantly incredibly the Dover's had all
00:22:09
survived but most of them were barely
00:22:11
clinging to life by the time Vance's
00:22:15
father was pulled from the van the
00:22:17
rescue effort had been joined by a
00:22:19
passing American coupling both of them
00:22:21
apparently doctors my father and he was
00:22:26
taken in us and put in the back of the
00:22:28
pickup truck as well as my grandfather
00:22:31
my grandfather had received just severe
00:22:35
head injuries to the point of his skull
00:22:37
showing his cut his head was just cut
00:22:40
really badly and the doctors later told
00:22:44
us that by him putting being put in the
00:22:46
back of a pickup truck actually saved
00:22:48
his life because the cold weather
00:22:51
actually helped seal up and clot the
00:22:53
blood
00:22:56
through a haze of terrible pain baths
00:22:59
watched the rescue effort unfold he
00:23:02
gradually realized that the two
00:23:03
Americans had taken charge of the
00:23:05
operation
00:23:08
my cousin Tommy was pulled from the van
00:23:11
and his vital signs were taken and it
00:23:15
was assumed that he was dead and they
00:23:19
were pulling other people out and trying
00:23:22
to revive the ones that they thought
00:23:24
were still alive after a few minutes had
00:23:30
gone by this doctor went you checked
00:23:32
Tommy's vital signs again and found a
00:23:35
very small pulse vance now believes that
00:23:40
if not for the woman's attention
00:23:42
Tommy would have died on the spot a few
00:23:47
moments later she placed Tommy's son
00:23:50
David apparently uninjured in the car
00:23:52
with vance a lady then got in the back
00:23:57
seat with me
00:23:58
and she was talking to me and comforting
00:24:00
me and I think she was trying to tell me
00:24:02
what all hadn't had occurred although at
00:24:04
that time I really just couldn't make it
00:24:06
out the nearest clinic was in Monterey
00:24:15
approximately an hour away
00:24:17
the unidentified American woman stayed
00:24:20
by Vance's side during the trip the
00:24:24
hospital was taken in too it was unlike
00:24:26
anything I've ever seen before
00:24:28
it was it reminded me almost like a mass
00:24:32
unit or something out of a war movie
00:24:35
there was there was one nurse there
00:24:38
though she spoke really good English her
00:24:41
name was Alicia she told me that my leg
00:24:52
was broken really bad
00:24:55
she told me that they didn't have any
00:24:57
anesthesia but they had to put it in
00:24:59
traction she said they were gonna have
00:25:00
to put a pin through my knee we can to
00:25:07
help you wait where is everybody else
00:25:09
well there is a man and a woman and a
00:25:13
child here the nurse was referring to
00:25:16
Vance's cousin Tommy his friend Marielle
00:25:18
and Tommy's son David the nurse told me
00:25:23
that they were injured severely they had
00:25:25
head injuries and she didn't think that
00:25:26
they would make it through the night
00:25:28
there were appeared to be no sign of my
00:25:30
father and grandfather and I had all
00:25:33
kind of thoughts go through my head I
00:25:34
mean it I mean they weren't at the
00:25:35
hospital I didn't know maybe they were
00:25:37
taken to a morgue and I had no idea and
00:25:40
no one in the hospital knew where they
00:25:41
were at Christmas morning dawned with a
00:25:46
Christmas miracle Vance awoke to find
00:25:49
that his young cousin David had in fact
00:25:51
escaped unharmed and that Marianne and
00:25:53
Tommy were going to pull through Vance
00:25:57
was surprised to see that the mysterious
00:25:59
woman his guardian angel was still with
00:26:02
him
00:26:06
Christmas it brought a lot of joy to me
00:26:10
knowing that she was there and she she
00:26:14
brought us both the little Christmas
00:26:15
present and she spent Christmas morning
00:26:18
with us there the woman raised Vance's
00:26:21
spirits even higher when she assured him
00:26:24
that his father and grandfather was
00:26:25
still alive and being treated elsewhere
00:26:29
another clinic my husband is with him
00:26:31
right now you remember anything about
00:26:35
last night
00:26:37
[Music]
00:26:39
she told me that her husband were on
00:26:41
vacation and they happened upon the
00:26:43
accident just moments after it occurred
00:26:49
I've always wondered what would have
00:26:51
happened had they not come upon the
00:26:53
accident because we were an hour or so
00:26:57
outside of this major city and there was
00:26:59
nothing out there at all and these
00:27:02
people just showed up
00:27:03
doctors showed up out of nowhere and and
00:27:08
you know I believe they were extremely
00:27:10
instrumental in saving our lives 12
00:27:15
years later the accident has had a
00:27:17
profound effect on the entire Dover
00:27:19
family today they are all actively
00:27:21
involved in the church and in fact Joe
00:27:24
is a lay pastor with his own
00:27:25
congregation of more than 300 perhaps
00:27:30
the most thankful of all is Joe's wife
00:27:32
Linda she is convinced that had it not
00:27:35
been for the two unknown angels she
00:27:37
might have lost her entire family I feel
00:27:42
like it is a miracle
00:27:43
many times is an accident and you know
00:27:46
we just drive by an accident but and
00:27:49
they could have done that that day but
00:27:50
they didn't they stopped and through
00:27:52
their staffing they saved the lives of
00:27:54
our family and we just wanna say thank
00:27:57
you
00:27:58
[Music]
00:28:28
it is a prison officials worst nightmare
00:28:31
an inmate who can charm the devil who
00:28:34
knows how to play the system who harbors
00:28:36
a deep but completely hidden desire to
00:28:38
escape confessed murderer Randolph
00:28:41
Franklin Dyle was just such a man last
00:28:48
August
00:28:48
diode escaped from the Oklahoma State
00:28:50
Reformatory and he took 32 year-old
00:28:53
Bobby Parker the deputy wardens wife
00:28:55
with him
00:28:56
this is their story it began in 1986 on
00:29:03
videotape Randolph Dyle voluntarily
00:29:06
confessed to committing a contract
00:29:08
killing five years earlier and tell me
00:29:10
to get off his property not fired for
00:29:22
nearly eight years Dyle served hard time
00:29:24
but Randolph Dyle was not your
00:29:27
run-of-the-mill lifer an artist of some
00:29:29
repute before prison he managed to
00:29:32
hoodwink the guards and wardens in
00:29:34
prison eventually he was transferred to
00:29:37
a minimum security unit at Oklahoma
00:29:40
State Reformatory there Randolph dial
00:29:43
became the very definition of a model
00:29:45
prisoner
00:29:47
Randolph Dahl was given trusty status he
00:29:51
was given full run of the prison in fact
00:29:53
as a trustee even though he was under a
00:29:55
murder conviction he was given access to
00:29:57
property outside the prison there was
00:30:00
really no supervision over Randolph dial
00:30:04
dials regular work assignment was
00:30:06
caretaker at the home of deputy warden
00:30:08
Randy Parker Parker his wife Bobbie and
00:30:12
their two young daughters lived right
00:30:13
next door to the prison over the years
00:30:18
Bobbie Parker had worked with a number
00:30:20
of inmates as a volunteer for various
00:30:22
rehabilitation programs she and Randolph
00:30:26
Dyle were brought together when money
00:30:28
was donated to start up a prison arts
00:30:30
project
00:30:32
what's the big push on it anyway because
00:30:36
we've got people wanting to buy these
00:30:38
dial
00:30:38
I mean darn often spent time alone with
00:30:42
Barbie in her garage which had been
00:30:43
converted into a ceramic studio given
00:30:47
the circumstances it was not unusual
00:30:49
when dial developed something of a crush
00:30:51
on Bobby I think that he probably read
00:30:55
more into the working relationship than
00:30:58
what was actually there you know a man's
00:31:01
locked up for over eight years going on
00:31:03
nine years he has a woman who is very
00:31:06
attractive very cordial very
00:31:08
compassionate caring I tell you why
00:31:11
Bobby you just come right over here you
00:31:14
work side by side with me
00:31:15
we'll be on your schedule what do you
00:31:18
think I think you do your job
00:31:21
and I will do mine and we'll meet my
00:31:23
schedule after a few weeks Randy Parker
00:31:27
began to feel that dial was spending too
00:31:29
much time with Bobby at the house and
00:31:31
acting as if he controlled the arts
00:31:33
program you need help over there I had
00:31:35
told him you screw up out here and I'll
00:31:40
show you what administrative power is
00:31:42
all about and he was very much aware
00:31:44
that August 30th 1994 began normally
00:31:49
enough for Randy and Bobbie Parker first
00:31:52
breakfast were their two daughters then
00:31:54
Randy went to work next door and the
00:31:56
girls headed off for school
00:31:58
[Music]
00:32:04
when Randy Parker left his house
00:32:06
Randolph diet was already out front
00:32:08
working in the yard yeah she gonna make
00:32:11
me do this all day she's got some other
00:32:13
things lined up for me she came back to
00:32:15
work out trade jobs we take it easy on
00:32:21
them on over there sir
00:32:23
[Music]
00:32:33
at noon Randy Parker came home for lunch
00:32:35
but found the house empty there was a
00:32:38
note from Bob he's saying that she had
00:32:40
gone shopping and that his sandwich was
00:32:42
in the refrigerator it was not anything
00:32:46
out of the ordinary at all to see a note
00:32:48
there let me know where she was being
00:32:50
concerned that I would be worried there
00:32:52
having my lunch there for me back at the
00:32:58
prison
00:32:59
Randy Parker's day proceeded without
00:33:01
incident then at 4:45 he received a
00:33:04
troubling call from his older daughter
00:33:07
not here right now and I just came in
00:33:11
and brandi was sitting all alone on the
00:33:14
floor mommy's gone shopping she'd be
00:33:16
home real soon
00:33:17
and got to be home in a little bit okay
00:33:20
thanks dad
00:33:21
[Music]
00:33:28
Randy Parker arrived at his house thirty
00:33:31
minutes later
00:33:31
Bobby was still not there soon Randy
00:33:35
began to fear the worst he contacted the
00:33:40
area hospitals but there was no word of
00:33:42
Bobby at a loss Randy rehashed the day
00:33:45
in his mind then I begin to thank back
00:33:50
you know I hadn't seen down since this
00:33:51
morning and usually when I come home for
00:33:53
lunch he's usually there hanging out
00:33:56
hello captain Randy yeah would you do me
00:34:00
if I have just cleared dial from his
00:34:02
cell and sent him over here now
00:34:08
till two to two or one
00:34:10
be advised then midol it's not in his
00:34:12
cell repeat him $1 not in himself I need
00:34:17
at that point that the Dow had escaped
00:34:19
in the fear that he had taken Bobby but
00:34:24
yet I hadn't I hadn't admitted that to
00:34:27
myself yet Bobby what are you talking
00:34:53
about Bobby what's wrong Bobby Bobby and
00:35:02
she hung up and I knew immediately that
00:35:05
she probably had been abducted because
00:35:08
my daughter wouldn't talk like that she
00:35:12
would have called her own girls and
00:35:14
everything she was not a crying person I
00:35:17
didn't know what that was going to do if
00:35:20
he did how he was gonna harm or hurt her
00:35:21
straightening her and of course I was
00:35:25
worried sick about her but then I was
00:35:26
also worried you know how am I going to
00:35:28
tell the girls the next day
00:35:31
Bobby called her best friend with the
00:35:33
same message the friend also felt that
00:35:35
Bobby was being held against her will
00:35:38
then 24 hours later
00:35:40
Bobby's van was found abandoned just
00:35:43
across the Texas border the vehicle was
00:35:47
basically clean we found no indications
00:35:50
that a violent struggle had taken place
00:35:52
in the vehicle there was there were no
00:35:54
blood splattering zatt all we did find
00:35:58
cigarettes their basic cigarettes which
00:36:01
was the brand that Randolph Dyle smoked
00:36:05
in the meantime brandy Parker had
00:36:07
learned from an inmate but for several
00:36:09
months
00:36:09
dile had been actively trying to barter
00:36:11
for valium on the prison black market
00:36:13
this fit with Randy Parker's firm belief
00:36:16
that dial had kidnapped his wife he
00:36:23
could have got some valium to her in a
00:36:24
glass of tea or something then he picked
00:36:28
her up then he walked her up to the van
00:36:30
and he laid her down in there he took
00:36:32
off
00:36:32
I believe that's what happened but the
00:36:38
fact remained that there was no concrete
00:36:40
evidence of a kidnapping the authorities
00:36:43
began to consider another possibility
00:36:45
perhaps Bobby Parker had run away with
00:36:48
Randolph diam
00:36:50
it does appear that there was a certain
00:36:53
fascination that Randolph doll had for
00:36:55
her Bobbie Parker from interviews with
00:36:58
other inmates at the institution he made
00:37:00
comments indicating that that he was
00:37:02
romantically attracted to Bobby we don't
00:37:06
know if that was reciprocated in any
00:37:09
fashion at this point we are under the
00:37:12
assumption that she was taken against
00:37:14
her will we have no information to
00:37:16
indicate otherwise
00:37:18
my wife did not leave voluntarily went
00:37:22
down she did not fall in love with him
00:37:24
she III believe that to the very depths
00:37:29
of my soul that that is that is not even
00:37:33
within the realm of possibilities that
00:37:34
she would abandon two children run off
00:37:37
with an inmate who's convicted for
00:37:39
murder throw away everything that she's
00:37:42
ever had that's just not even possible
00:37:45
that is absurd and ridiculous
00:37:50
thank his quick ten days after Bobby
00:37:54
disappeared she made one final phone
00:37:56
call this one to her brother's wife
00:37:58
once again Bobby sounded upset she asked
00:38:02
her sister-in-law to tell the girls she
00:38:04
loved them and that everything would be
00:38:06
all right and that was the last contact
00:38:10
that anybody's had that I know of and
00:38:14
this plane that's been September night
00:38:17
that's been a long time and I just keep
00:38:18
waiting for another phone call keep
00:38:20
waiting for something but dials not
00:38:24
gonna let her call again well I
00:38:26
personally painted all these ones you
00:38:28
see here there have been several
00:38:31
sightings of Randolph nine and a woman
00:38:33
who may be Bobby Parker's one of the
00:38:35
most credible occurred in September of
00:38:37
1994 at an art sale in Galveston Texas
00:38:40
if the woman would dial was indeed Bobby
00:38:44
she had either dyed her hair blonde or
00:38:46
was wearing a wig
00:38:47
witnesses say she seemed nervous and
00:38:50
scared

next a businessman suspected of criminal
00:39:41
activity disappears during a fishing
00:39:43
trip a tragic accident a clever ruse to
00:39:46
avoid arrest the muddy turbulent waters
00:39:59
of the Colorado river's snake some 1500
00:40:02
miles from seven different states over
00:40:05
the centuries the Colorado's powerful
00:40:07
currents have carved out hundreds of
00:40:09
gorges including the Grand Canyon in
00:40:11
Arizona but hidden by the rivers
00:40:14
majestic beauty is a world of untold
00:40:16
secrets among them the puzzling fate of
00:40:19
a man named Robert RCA who disappeared
00:40:22
during a fishing trip on the Colorado
00:40:24
more than eight years ago to all
00:40:28
appearances Bob are Syria was a jovial
00:40:30
fun-loving family man who made friends
00:40:33
at the drop of a hat he was also the
00:40:36
quintessential wheeler dealer in fact
00:40:44
around Phoenix our Syria was known as a
00:40:46
man who could get you almost anything
00:40:48
from soft pretzels to camper shells bill
00:40:51
ruddy knew him as well as anyone the
00:40:54
first time I met Bob our Series was I
00:40:56
went down to bought a camper shell fine
00:40:57
and then he needed some work done I
00:41:00
needed things done and we just traded on
00:41:03
and off and and I sold him a car that I
00:41:08
had fixed and our relationship just kind
00:41:11
of rolled from there from the rest of
00:41:13
time on bill Redick and his wife Janet
00:41:18
hit it off with Bob RCA and his wife
00:41:20
right from the start
00:41:21
hey check out these little guys all
00:41:23
right that was nice
00:41:24
that's our continued collection got some
00:41:26
more Bob was fascinated by Bill's
00:41:28
collection of rare Native American
00:41:30
Kachina dolls worth $75,000 you know I
00:41:34
also collect guns I've got an 1881 Smith
00:41:36
& Wesson I'd like to see oh I'd love to
00:41:38
see that I'll go get it
00:41:39
great bill was equally proud of his
00:41:42
priceless antique guns
00:41:44
he left Bob in the living room while he
00:41:46
went to retrieve them from the safe I
00:41:50
had enough my safe where they were at
00:41:53
and then I turn around looked and he's
00:41:55
right behind me it seemed unordinary to
00:41:59
me because I was gonna get him out the
00:42:02
ones that I wanted to show him now we're
00:42:04
just easy to pick up and bring in there
00:42:05
and I didn't do that craftsmanship he
00:42:09
was very calm and very cool or about the
00:42:11
whole issue he didn't seem to be
00:42:13
interested anything he just seemed to be
00:42:15
more like MoMA that's nice sort of like
00:42:19
nonchalant on April 3rd 1984 bill
00:42:26
Reddick was out of town on business at
00:42:28
around 8 p.m. his wife Janet came home
00:42:31
from work the house had been ransacked
00:42:34
the valuable Kachina dolls were laid out
00:42:37
on a sofa and table
00:42:39
[Music]
00:42:44
I went to leave to get out of the house
00:42:47
[Music]
00:42:50
from that point on my memory is kind of
00:42:54
black until I woke up in the hospital a
00:42:56
couple days later with Janet unconscious
00:43:01
the thieves made off with the Redax
00:43:03
entire collection of Kachina dolls all
00:43:06
of Bill's antique guns and Janet's
00:43:08
jewelry total value more than two
00:43:11
hundred thousand dollars Janet had been
00:43:15
struck five times in the head with a
00:43:17
ball-peen hammer
00:43:18
miraculously she would recover but only
00:43:21
after major surgery and months of
00:43:23
rehabilitation got the gun got the
00:43:28
Kachina dolls while Janet was
00:43:29
recuperating
00:43:30
barbar series stopped by to see how she
00:43:32
was doing at the time the writing's just
00:43:36
assumed he was a concerned friend
00:43:38
perhaps a little too conservative she
00:43:44
said to us that he was wish that he
00:43:47
could help us find the guy and if he did
00:43:50
he'd be glad to kill him for us there's
00:43:53
three things that bob was involved in he
00:43:54
was balding drugs he was involved in
00:43:57
murder and he was involved in robbery
00:44:00
almost two years later this man an
00:44:03
admitted contract killer went to the
00:44:05
police with an incredible story he
00:44:07
claimed Bob our cieariy had masterminded
00:44:09
a series of robberies but the targets
00:44:12
were our series owned friends and
00:44:14
business associates would have dinner
00:44:16
with these guys have more to the house
00:44:17
play golf with him and then maybe two
00:44:20
three years down the road he'd set them
00:44:22
up we were initially a little skeptical
00:44:26
of this information however as we began
00:44:28
to investigate the crimes this subject
00:44:32
story seemed very credible
00:44:37
Phoenix police sought to verify the
00:44:39
informants allegations they arranged for
00:44:42
him to secretly tape record a
00:44:44
conversation with our cieariy
00:44:45
okay don't forget that to make that
00:44:47
thing to see him drive up got you man
00:44:51
the meeting between the information
00:44:55
source and Robert are sherry took place
00:44:57
in a parking lot I was able to view the
00:45:00
meeting through binoculars from some
00:45:02
distance away in the exchange our Siri
00:45:11
canceled an alleged hit he had hired the
00:45:13
informant to carry out its off come on
00:45:16
Bob it's on it's off after we retrieved
00:45:21
the recording device from him and
00:45:23
listened to what was being said left
00:45:26
little doubt that our Siri was in fact
00:45:29
involved in the crimes that the
00:45:31
information source was alleging the
00:45:37
informant gave detective flicked several
00:45:39
items he said were stolen by our series
00:45:41
henchmen I never thought I'd see these
00:45:43
again some of the valuables belong to
00:45:47
Janet Redding's
00:45:48
let me know if any of them are familiar
00:45:50
to you
00:45:52
robbing our cieariy yeah is he involved
00:45:55
in this when I looked at the slip of
00:45:58
paper and I saw Bob's name on it
00:46:01
everything just hit this person is
00:46:04
involved with what happened at my house
00:46:08
Robert our Siri was charged with seven
00:46:11
felony counts including heading an
00:46:13
organized crime syndicate racketeering
00:46:15
and conspiracy to commit murder but a
00:46:19
few months later in November of 1986
00:46:21
those charges were dropped called police
00:46:23
continued the investigation according to
00:46:27
the authorities they were gambling if
00:46:29
they could build an even stronger case
00:46:35
Bob or Siri was once again free to come
00:46:38
and go as he pleased
00:46:39
in January of 1987 he set off on a
00:46:43
fishing trip with his nephew and two
00:46:45
friends they chose a spot on the
00:46:47
Colorado River known as Lee's ferry Bob
00:46:52
called me and he said he'd been
00:46:53
exonerated
00:46:54
and he wanted to celebrate and that's
00:46:59
why we went to Lee's ferry was to kind
00:47:01
of celebrate that being all over and
00:47:03
done with
00:47:07
Ray Brown says that his darkness fell on
00:47:09
the first day of the trip
00:47:10
our serie began to complain about chest
00:47:12
pains at the duck our Siri was the last
00:47:18
man to disembark his nephew had to help
00:47:21
him from the boat the other man on the
00:47:26
fishing trip was asked not to be
00:47:28
identified I walked up the dock and left
00:47:32
the nephew and Bob standing there and I
00:47:36
went to the bathroom and when I was
00:47:39
leaving I heard a splash down by the
00:47:42
dock the water was over a man's head at
00:47:57
the boat dock and I backed the truck up
00:48:00
and shined the lights out on the river
00:48:02
and we could see nothing and I knew he'd
00:48:07
must be drowned in the area where our
00:48:13
Siri disappeared the river brought us
00:48:15
out almost into a lake rescuers feared
00:48:18
that he may have floated a half mile
00:48:20
downstream towards a set of powerful
00:48:22
Rapids but an intense four-day search
00:48:26
yielded no trace of Bob our Siri I feel
00:48:30
that if he were in that upper section of
00:48:33
the river in the Clearwater there's a
00:48:35
very high likelihood that we would have
00:48:37
seen him in that area and he would have
00:48:39
been found
00:48:41
at Bob our cieariy suffer a heart attack
00:48:43
fall into the Colorado River and drown
00:48:46
or was the entire episode a clever ruse
00:48:49
enabling our Siri to escape his
00:48:52
impending legal troubles I feel that Bob
00:48:56
our Siri is dead he was a family man out
00:49:02
of this world and going in that River
00:49:08
there's I just can't see any way he
00:49:11
could have got out of it Bob probably
00:49:13
didn't even get his feet wet for all I
00:49:17
know that guys were willing threw a rock
00:49:18
overboard no he's not dead
00:49:23
it's my belief that knowing that he was
00:49:27
looking at spending the rest of his life
00:49:29
behind bars resulted in making some hard
00:49:32
choices and that was either facing them
00:49:34
or feigning his death and I believe he
00:49:37
took the latter every indication I have
00:49:40
is that he he did not drowned and he is
00:49:44
alive today
