May 21, 2019 / 48:25

This episode covers the unsolved murder of Kay Hall, a con artist scam in New York, the story of Mabel Woods and her animal sanctuary, and the disappearance of five Hawaiian fishermen.

The case of Kay Hall involves her husband Bob Hall, who is suspected of her murder after she was found dead on a Virginia road shortly after receiving a $50,000 inheritance. The investigation reveals Bob had no alibi during the time of her death, leading authorities to suspect foul play.

In New York, a clever scam tricked over 5,000 people into buying worthless coins. Victims like Jerry Diner share their experiences of being caught in the con, highlighting how the scam operated and the psychological tactics used by the con artists.

Mabel Woods, an animal sanctuary owner in Missouri, has faced a series of attacks against her and the dogs she cares for. After a tragic arson fire killed 59 dogs, Mabel continues to receive threats, yet remains determined to protect her sanctuary.

The episode also recounts the mysterious disappearance of five Hawaiian fishermen during a storm in 1979, with a boat and remains discovered years later, raising questions about their fate.

00:00:12
what you are about to see is not a news

broadcast in Virginia a woman is found
00:00:22
dead on a lonely country road her
00:00:24
husband claims it was a tragic accident
00:00:26
but the police believe it was murdered
00:00:29
in Chicago in New York over five
00:00:32
thousand people had been tricked into

00:01:00
ten years later the tiny boat was

discovered over 3,000 miles of where
00:01:04
they were last seen beside the boat one

00:02:06
on the night of September 30th 1987 a
00:02:10
pickup truck was discovered on the side
00:02:12
of a Virginia back road the engine was
00:02:15
running the keys were still in the
00:02:18
ignition the transmission was in parked
00:02:23
beside the truck
00:02:25
lay its owner a 45 year old woman named
00:02:27
K Holly
00:02:28
crushed to death
00:02:32
whoever operated the vehicle appeared to
00:02:35
have backed over the center of her torso
00:02:37
and probably on the bump from rolling
00:02:40
over her with the left rear tire of the
00:02:42
truck then applied the brake suddenly
00:02:44
causing the vehicle to skid going
00:02:46
backwards the front tire of the left
00:02:48
front tire then caught her torso and
00:02:50
pulled her backwards slightly and
00:02:52
twisted her body on the roadway which is
00:02:54
how she was found with the vehicle in
00:02:56
park and the engine still running after
00:03:00
their preliminary investigation
00:03:02
authorities began to suspect that Kay's
00:03:04
husband Bob had murdered her they
00:03:06
believe he had a possible motive for
00:03:08
wanting Kay dead as he stood to collect
00:03:10
part of $50,000 that she had inherited
00:03:12
the same day she died
00:03:14
Bob Hall also had no alibi for the
00:03:17
period of time when Kay was killed all I
00:03:22
perceive is that the investigation has
00:03:27
focused only on me and that I don't see
00:03:32
any effort on anyone's part to look into
00:03:37
the other possibilities the death of Kay
00:03:41
Hall is surrounded by events that seem
00:03:42
to simultaneously indict and exonerate
00:03:45
the prime suspect this reason Bob Hall
00:03:48
remains a free man
00:03:49
the case against him rests on time an
00:03:52
approximately 20 minute window of
00:03:54
opportunity when Bob Hall could have
00:03:55
stalked and run down his wife Bob Hall
00:03:58
feety consented to appear in the story
00:04:00
hoping it through it's telling his
00:04:02
innocence will finally be established
00:04:07
Kay and Bob Hall lived and worked on the
00:04:10
shores of Virginia's karaduman River a
00:04:12
tributary that empties near the western
00:04:14
shore of the Chesapeake Bay Kay was a
00:04:18
successful insurance executive he left
00:04:20
her career when she and Bob started an
00:04:22
oyster farm
00:04:25
they have been married since July of
00:04:27
1985
00:04:29
okay had known Bob for 12 years the two
00:04:32
became closer while Bob was serving two
00:04:34
years in jail for selling drugs she
00:04:38
corresponded with him while he was in
00:04:40
prison Lenny was released in January of
00:04:43
1982 kay was waiting it was quite an
00:04:48
experience that Saturday morning was
00:04:50
raining now it's about 7:30 and Kay
00:04:54
pulled up in her little fiesta and could
00:04:56
see the car way off in the distance and
00:04:58
her waving at me and between us was a
00:05:00
very large electrical fence and she very
00:05:03
laughingly said to me hey you Robert I
00:05:06
finally got you at last and that was a
00:05:08
that was a good feeling it was nice to
00:05:10
feel wanted by somebody six months after
00:05:16
the couple started their business it
00:05:17
began to run into financial difficulty
00:05:20
by many accounts this contributed to
00:05:23
tensions in the marriage both began to
00:05:27
drink heavily as time went on I'd ask
00:05:32
how's the business going and I can tell
00:05:35
it wasn't going so well and then I'd say
00:05:37
well in house Bob and I could tell that
00:05:40
wasn't so good either according to
00:05:47
friends Kay and Bob's quarrels often
00:05:49
began over a trivial incident taking the
00:05:52
Jeep or taking the truck because you got
00:05:55
the DWI energy Katie called me in the
00:05:58
summer of 1986
00:05:59
and she started crying and she said Bob
00:06:04
is abusing me and that's when she
00:06:11
started to talk about going back to
00:06:13
therapy trying to get into marriage
00:06:14
counseling with Bob and if that didn't
00:06:17
work that she would definitely consider
00:06:19
divorce conversation about divorce
00:06:24
probably came up as frequently as it
00:06:26
would in any couple's relationship where
00:06:30
there were problems and the problems
00:06:31
were essentially money the the oyster
00:06:35
business had not treated us with great
00:06:36
kindness we had lost an awful lot
00:06:38
my heart on September 30th 1987 Kay's
00:06:42
fortunes turn she had recently received
00:06:47
a $50,000 inheritance and a local post
00:06:50
office she mailed papers had officially
00:06:52
transferred half of the money into her
00:06:54
account that morning was to be Kay halls
00:06:58
last
00:07:05
that even KN Bob went to a party at the
00:07:08
local Country Club many of Kay's friends
00:07:11
were there and by all accounts she was
00:07:13
the life of the party we got to the
00:07:17
party probably around 20 after sex and
00:07:20
Kay was I know it's thoroughly enjoying
00:07:22
herself you could just see the magic you
00:07:25
know Kay walked in and all of these
00:07:27
faces just seemed to turn there's Kay
00:07:29
and all of a sudden things seem to be
00:07:31
completely progressed Qian Bob continued
00:07:40
to drink then K became upset some say by
00:07:49
the amount of Bob tipped the bartender
00:07:51
he left the country club without her
00:07:53
husband and drove away in their pickup a
00:07:55
few minutes later as he was left without
00:07:58
a car
00:07:58
bob was driven the 14 miles to his home
00:08:01
by friends
00:08:08
at approximately 9:55 p.m. two carloads
00:08:11
of people leaving a different dinner
00:08:13
party happened upon a shocking scene
00:08:16
there was a truck sitting there off to
00:08:20
the side of the road with the lights on
00:08:23
and there was a body
00:08:29
we felt her pulse to see whether she had
00:08:34
a pulse we couldn't find one but that
00:08:37
was when we discovered that she was just
00:08:39
as warm as you and I are right now so
00:08:43
she what what had happened had just
00:08:46
happened very very recently by the time
00:08:51
the paramedics arrived it was too late a
00:08:54
little over two hours after leaving the
00:08:56
country-club cave Hall was pronounced
00:08:59
dead the reconstruction from witnesses
00:09:02
at the scene was that she had been found
00:09:04
under the left front tire of her own
00:09:06
vehicle apparently the vehicle had
00:09:08
backed over her while she was lying on
00:09:11
the road there were some signs which we
00:09:14
later found in the truck that indicated
00:09:16
there was a scuffle inside the cab of
00:09:17
the truck but Kay's purse was still
00:09:21
intact had all her money and credit
00:09:22
cards and so forth in it also it did not
00:09:25
appear that there was any sign of a
00:09:27
sexual assault she was fully clothed the
00:09:31
autopsy results showed that she was
00:09:33
intoxicated at the time of her death a
00:09:35
rather high level she very well could
00:09:38
have been disoriented which would have
00:09:40
caused her to have taken the wrong turn
00:09:41
and might have put her in the area where
00:09:43
she was found Bob and Kay's domestic
00:09:47
problems coupled with a $50,000 and she
00:09:49
had just inherited led to Bob Hall being
00:09:52
considered a prime suspect
00:09:56
Bob Hall has no alibi for the
00:09:59
approximate one-hour period between the
00:10:00
time friends dropped him off at home at
00:10:02
about 8:45 the time that he placed a
00:10:05
phone call from his house at 9:47 during
00:10:08
this hour kay was killed if Bob had
00:10:10
murdered her it only could have occurred
00:10:13
within a narrow period of time shortly
00:10:16
after 8:00 p.m. Kay left the Country
00:10:18
Club located here bob was dropped off at
00:10:21
his home here 15 miles from the club at
00:10:24
8:45 p.m. just over an hour later at
00:10:27
approximately 9:55 p.m. kay was found
00:10:30
dead at this spot just two miles from
00:10:32
the club Bob Hall would have had only
00:10:35
one hour to drive to the murder site
00:10:36
somehow find his wife in the darkness
00:10:39
kill her and then race back home in time
00:10:42
to place his 9:47 p.m. phone call
00:10:46
special agent Riley he retraced the
00:10:49
drive from the hall hole to the death
00:10:51
site several times I measured the
00:10:56
distance between the hall residence and
00:10:58
the spot where Kay was found in the
00:11:00
distance is between 14 and 15 miles I
00:11:04
can drive it in as little as 17 minutes
00:11:07
if I drove it in a pursuit fashion if I
00:11:09
drove at a leisurely pace it took as
00:11:11
much as 24 minutes
00:11:15
if Bob had left home immediately at 8:45
00:11:18
and driven directly to where Kay's body
00:11:20
was found he would have arrived at about
00:11:23
905 in order to make his 947 phone call
00:11:29
Paul would have had to have left the
00:11:31
scene no later than 9:30 p.m. this would
00:11:34
have given him no more than 25 minutes
00:11:37
to track down and murder his wife
00:11:41
it's terrible to have somebody taken
00:11:43
from you in this way and particularly
00:11:44
when nobody has been able to do anything
00:11:46
about it so I really I don't know that
00:11:51
that I can rest until we till we see
00:11:54
justice served and the murderer is
00:11:58
apprehended and convicted
00:12:03
they apparently do not have any any
00:12:07
anyone else to to focus in on and being
00:12:11
put in that spotlight has been tough I
00:12:15
love Kay I'm looking forward to this
00:12:19
this whole incident being resolved I'd
00:12:23
like to see you know K to literally be
00:12:26
put at graft and have some peace in my
00:12:29
life and in her family life
00:12:34
[Music]
00:12:47
in a moment we'll update the story of an
00:12:50
injured Vietnam vet who for 21 years has
00:12:53
been searching for the nurse who helped
00:12:54
him learn to walk and talk
00:12:59
[Music]
00:13:06
three weeks ago we presented the
00:13:07
poignant story of an army helicopter
00:13:09
pilot Jim Meade who was severely injured
00:13:11
when he was shot down in Vietnam in 1967
00:13:15
tonight the heartwarming ending to Jim's
00:13:17
story
00:13:20
Jim's war wounds left him in a coma from
00:13:23
which doctors feared he would never
00:13:24
recover Jim eventually came out of his
00:13:29
corner but had no memory of his first 19
00:13:31
years yet even forgotten how to walk and
00:13:34
talk then he met an army physical
00:13:36
therapist Maine lieutenant Stevens I
00:13:39
know you're hurting but you can't give
00:13:43
up straighten it up come on work hard
00:13:48
come on for the next nine months help an
00:13:52
encouragement of lieutenant Stevens Jim
00:13:54
struggled to regain his speech and motor
00:13:56
skills I don't know if I would have
00:14:01
learned to do these things without her I
00:14:03
always wanted to get better learn things
00:14:08
so I can show her how much had improved
00:14:11
it was always important to me
00:14:16
nearly one year after Jim arrived at the
00:14:18
hospital lieutenant Stephens left the
00:14:20
army she never saw Jim again or had any
00:14:23
idea that she set him on the path to
00:14:25
recovery if I saw her now I don't know
00:14:28
what I did I just know this it's always
00:14:32
been important for me that she knows
00:14:36
that I'm okay the morning after our
00:14:41
broadcast
00:14:42
Jimmy's 15 years search came to an end
00:14:44
when he received a phone call from one
00:14:46
of our viewers I was watching TV and I
00:14:51
saw Jim at the beginning of the program
00:14:53
and I said to my family I treated that
00:14:59
fella when I was in the service and the
00:15:02
next remark was that they were looking
00:15:05
for lieutenant Stevens and I thought
00:15:07
well that was my maiden name and at that
00:15:10
point I realized that this was going to
00:15:12
be more than just a program to watch on
00:15:17
September 25th nearly 21 years after
00:15:20
they said goodbye Jim and Karen
00:15:23
really
00:15:25
[Music]
00:15:34
when Karen came to the door I went to
00:15:37
know if somebody else are they might say
00:15:42
that Karen's changed 200% and my heart
00:15:47
Karen hasn't changed a bit
00:15:49
[Music]
00:15:52
and I'm glad to tell her thank you the
00:15:58
reunion today has been everything I
00:16:00
expected it to be
00:16:01
it's it will stand out as one of the
00:16:03
most exciting days of my life it's
00:16:06
thrilling to see someone that has come
00:16:09
back so far and made a success of their
00:16:12
life but a lot of people had a lot to do
00:16:18
with Jim Meade's recovery and I was just
00:16:21
a small part
00:16:22
[Music]
00:16:24
you'll be very difficult for me to put
00:16:26
into words what this day is meant to me
00:16:28
it just makes the future that much
00:16:32
brighter because I do know that now the
00:16:36
dreams do come true
00:16:37
[Music]
00:16:47
New Yorkers have a reputation for being
00:16:49
streetwise and sanity they can take care
00:16:52
of themselves no one is gonna pull a
00:16:54
fast one on them yet each year New
00:16:56
Yorkers lose four times more money to
00:16:59
scams and con men than to bank robbers
00:17:01
over the past 15 years at least 5,000
00:17:04
people have fallen prey to a very clever
00:17:05
highly organised scam Jerry diner was a
00:17:09
typical unsuspecting victim I was at a
00:17:12
telephone in Midtown outside and as I
00:17:15
finished up my call okay I come to me
00:17:18
sounded kind of tricky to me excuse me
00:17:20
yeah I just found this bank envelope on
00:17:23
the street and this was inside of it I
00:17:24
was wondering if you'd do me a favor
00:17:26
could you call this guy up and tell him
00:17:29
I had found this because I want to give
00:17:30
it back to him and he's holding a bank
00:17:32
deposit envelope and it's got dr. stone
00:17:35
and the address and in his other hand
00:17:37
he's got these coins he couldn't make
00:17:40
the telephone call herself I finally get
00:17:44
the doctor on the phone and I said I
00:17:47
don't know how to explain this to you
00:17:56
[Music]
00:17:58
and I said doctor I don't know what to
00:18:01
do here and the doctor says look if you
00:18:03
could give him $100 then you know I'll
00:18:07
add that hundred dollars on to there's a
00:18:09
thousand dollar reward so I said I don't
00:18:16
know what to do here you know he won't
00:18:18
come to you can you come down here and
00:18:20
doctor says he can't come down there
00:18:21
okay I certainly would appreciate it
00:18:25
thank you very much as it turned out the
00:18:29
phone number Jerry dialed was not a
00:18:30
doctor's office but a payphone and a man
00:18:33
he spoke with was a con artist
00:18:37
what allowed me to be scale was that it
00:18:41
was totally non-threatening it was
00:18:44
always up to me I could walk away or I
00:18:47
could go for that next step further when
00:18:49
he was really drunk at the telephone I
00:18:51
could have just said look I can't handle
00:18:53
this dr. stump boom I'm out of here Joe
00:18:56
what look how much do you want for those
00:18:58
coins I just want a place to stay
00:19:00
something to drink so I understand that
00:19:02
and understands but exactly how much do
00:19:04
you want for the coins a hundred odds
00:19:06
all right look here's what I'll do I'll
00:19:08
take you over to my bank machine and
00:19:09
I'll get you a hundred dollars and I'll
00:19:11
take the coins over to the doctor you do
00:19:13
that for me yeah sure oh you wanna sing
00:19:16
come on and I give him a hundred and
00:19:18
sixty dollars I mean it's worth it to
00:19:20
give him the extra money and I'd like to
00:19:22
say that you know that I'm like really a
00:19:23
good person and that there was no greed
00:19:26
involved but it was kind of like an
00:19:28
illegal thing that was going on because
00:19:30
I was gonna take those coins I'm giving
00:19:33
him a hundred and sixty but you know I'm
00:19:35
gonna make five times that so yes there
00:19:38
was you know that illicit kind of
00:19:41
feeling of you know I'm doing something
00:19:43
a little weird here and you know now I'm
00:19:46
gonna get away with it in the scam a
00:19:50
conman carefully selects people who
00:19:52
appear to be affluent or who might be
00:19:54
able to easily get cash from a bank
00:19:56
teller machine once the fake transaction
00:19:59
has gone down he simply disappears into
00:20:02
the crowd I don't know anything about
00:20:04
coins so I thought I was doing a favor
00:20:06
for the doctor but in the cab I looked
00:20:08
at the coins and it said rare on the
00:20:09
coins but then it listed the amounts and
00:20:12
one was thirteen fifty one was six
00:20:15
hundred and one was like three hundred
00:20:17
and I'm going why would he offer a
00:20:18
thousand dollar reward for coins that
00:20:20
are only worth like two thousand that
00:20:22
seemed like a little weird to me but I
00:20:23
figured well they really mean something
00:20:25
to this guy
00:20:28
most of the people taken in by the scam
00:20:30
are sent to the same apartment building
00:20:32
on the Upper East Side which they
00:20:34
believe to be dr. Stone's office hi I'm
00:20:38
looking for dr. stone
00:20:40
well I'm sorry there's no dr. stone here
00:20:42
in the last few years we've estimated
00:20:44
that about three or four thousand people
00:20:47
have actually come here with this coin
00:20:49
scam
00:20:49
a lot of the times when these victims
00:20:51
come here they believe that in some way
00:20:54
myself or whoever else is working here
00:20:56
that's in the lobby is an accomplice to
00:20:59
this and you know I always try to
00:21:01
explain to them if I was running this
00:21:03
scam when I actually bring you back to
00:21:04
me I never thought that I was being
00:21:08
scanned for one second not even for a
00:21:10
millisecond I was just caught up in this
00:21:13
I really felt like I was doing a good
00:21:17
deed and making money at the same time
00:21:20
the simple the plausible scam has
00:21:23
suckered people in New York Florida
00:21:24
Boston and Baltimore in most cases are
00:21:27
coins a disorder like these an English
00:21:29
25 pence worth about thirty five cents a
00:21:32
fake California Gold Rush coin which is
00:21:34
totally worthless and their Indian penny
00:21:37
worth no more than 50 cents a total
00:21:40
value of these three coins is no more
00:21:41
than one dollar if you're approached by
00:21:44
one of these con artists for heaven's
00:21:45
sake don't buy these coins immediately
00:21:48
contact your local law enforcement
00:21:49
agency neck's the story of a woman who
00:21:53
provides shelter for homeless animals
00:21:55
she is being terrorized
00:21:57
an unknown assailant
00:21:58
[Music]
00:22:07
the Humane Society of the United States
00:22:10
estimates that last year alone over 12
00:22:12
million stray and abandoned cats and
00:22:14
dogs were taken and by animal shelters
00:22:16
nationwide sadly over seven and a half
00:22:18
million of these animals were never
00:22:21
placed in homes and had to be destroyed
00:22:22
in southern Missouri 68 year-old Mable
00:22:25
woods has dedicated the past 15 years of
00:22:28
her life to running an animal sanctuary
00:22:29
that provides a loving and caring home
00:22:32
for dogs that might otherwise be impound
00:22:34
but in recent years maple in the dog she
00:22:37
cares for have been the target of a
00:22:39
campaign of terror how long have you
00:22:42
been on the road for two half years
00:22:45
Mabel moved to the small rural community
00:22:48
of bond tear located 60 miles south of
00:22:50
st. Louis I was raised on a farm I
00:22:55
always loved animals my dream was always
00:22:59
to have lots of mass of animals oh
00:23:03
you're beautiful
00:23:05
where did you come from we're gonna go
00:23:09
home with me let's take you home
00:23:11
give me something to eat every time I
00:23:14
would go to the store I would see strays
00:23:16
well it ruined the whole evening if I
00:23:18
saw a dog that was obviously lost
00:23:22
finally I fulfilled my dream of having a
00:23:25
place I could keep them and I can't take
00:23:29
all the strays of course but I take a
00:23:30
great many
00:23:32
Mabel bought a 110 acre farm and built a
00:23:35
$60,000 kennel to house many of the 115
00:23:38
dogs she was caring for the dogs were
00:23:41
offered for adoption but those that
00:23:43
didn't find new homes lived out their
00:23:45
lives on the sanctuary
00:23:48
Mabel felt the farm was an ideal
00:23:50
location because her nearest neighbors
00:23:52
are over a mile away would not be
00:23:54
disturbed by the dogs 18 months after
00:24:18
she moved to the farm labels peaceful
00:24:20
life was shattered on the night of
00:24:24
December 11th 1986 someone broke into
00:24:28
Mabel's Canada 40 caliber rifle killing
00:24:55
two dogs seriously wounding two others
00:25:00
the next morning when I went up to open
00:25:03
the kennel I found my dogs dead in the
00:25:06
beginning I thought oh there's been a
00:25:09
fight they killed each other but as I
00:25:11
looked I realized that they had been
00:25:14
shot and I rushed two of them when a big
00:25:19
collie to the vet and he was saved well
00:25:23
he was shot right in the right in the
00:25:25
nose it's a miracle that he's even
00:25:28
living because he was laying in a pool
00:25:29
of blood when I found him I was upset
00:25:33
about it and I called the sheriff's
00:25:35
office but I knew there was nothing
00:25:37
really nothing that could be done at
00:25:39
that point probably police officials
00:25:42
investigated the shooting but because
00:25:44
the killing of an
00:25:45
a misdemeanor the case was given a low
00:25:48
priority after the shooter mabel hired
00:25:52
Charlie Jacobs to help her on the kennel
00:25:55
Charlie moved into the guesthouse and
00:25:57
doubled as a hired hand and night
00:25:58
watchman for two months nothing unusual
00:26:06
happened Mabel and Charlie settled into
00:26:09
a comfortable routine on the night of
00:26:20
February 10th 1987 Charlie made his
00:26:23
final rounds as usual I walked back down
00:26:33
just stopped at her burn turn the light
00:26:36
off there and walked on down to brides
00:26:41
where I met Mabel we talked for a few
00:26:42
minutes and turn the lights off air
00:26:43
again around 1:00 a.m. Charlie was in
00:26:48
his kitchen when he noticed a bright
00:26:49
orange glow through the window
00:26:55
50 yards away the kennel was inflamed
00:27:10
all of our gals over
00:27:15
[Music]
00:27:19
the time charlie reached the channel was
00:27:22
completely engulfed in flames inside was
00:27:25
sixty dogs they had no way to escape
00:27:32
there's awful things are real hand here
00:27:36
a few wrong so long
00:27:38
the place is on fire there's like a
00:27:39
inferno
00:27:41
[Music]
00:27:43
Charlie managed to pull one half planes
00:27:46
but could do nothing to say the other 59
00:28:03
[Applause]
00:28:08
there was no reason for the kennel to
00:28:11
burn because mikela was so new a great
00:28:14
deal of it was green lumber the dog
00:28:16
houses were burning from the inside not
00:28:18
outside from inside I knew it had to be
00:28:22
arson because the dogs were blazing
00:28:24
which they would not have been without
00:28:25
something
00:28:28
fire officials told laden with the blaze
00:28:31
had first been reported by a neighbor a
00:28:33
fire was so intense that it set off
00:28:36
smoke alarms and homes over a mile away
00:28:38
any proud have you noticed anybody
00:28:43
around the property that's hidden around
00:28:46
all I could think of is why anyone would
00:28:53
do such a thing
00:28:56
also the fact that the last thing I've
00:29:00
always done is tell the dogs I'm glad
00:29:03
I've got them and that they're safe as I
00:29:14
watch the kennel come down to the ground
00:29:17
had realized that my dogs were all dead
00:29:18
I couldn't I just didn't realize why
00:29:23
anyone would do that there just wasn't
00:29:26
anything left except few scraps of metal
00:29:29
in the country
00:29:32
[Applause]
00:29:40
four days after the blade the local
00:29:43
volunteer fire department began an
00:29:45
investigation headed by investigator
00:29:47
Charlie Giza we went to interview the
00:29:53
local people and a lot of people were
00:29:55
surprised that she even existed back on
00:29:58
this farm
00:29:58
nobody knew Mabel woods was back here
00:30:01
look charge your lines and then get this
00:30:04
cleaned off
00:30:06
[Applause]
00:30:11
we wanted to clean off the debris of the
00:30:16
barn to get a look at the floor we start
00:30:20
to see a pattern is called Spalding
00:30:22
developing spawning occurs when a
00:30:25
flammable substance is ignited on
00:30:27
concrete the extreme heat causes the
00:30:30
concrete to crack Rodya this pattern is
00:30:34
not normal in a fire and left to to the
00:30:37
assumption that the fire was set with a
00:30:38
flammable liquid we believe that not
00:30:45
that the suspect entered the building
00:30:47
through the door they used normally to
00:30:50
get between the two rolls of pens
00:30:52
[Music]
00:31:04
he entered the building board a
00:31:07
flammable liquid down the walls as he
00:31:10
went in the hallway led to a bigger open
00:31:12
area at the far end he continued pouring
00:31:15
the wall at that point that's probably
00:31:20
when he lived and then he took off
00:31:22
[Music]
00:31:31
once it was determined that arson were
00:31:33
the cause of the fire police officials
00:31:36
joined the investigation 100 yards from
00:31:41
where the kennel once stood they found a
00:31:43
tire track in the mud my left out in
00:31:47
hurry
00:31:48
they made a plaster mold of this track
00:31:50
it and the spawning patterns burned into
00:31:53
the kennel floor are the only evidence
00:31:55
police have in this case we don't have
00:32:04
any suspects that haven't been
00:32:05
eliminated most of the people that
00:32:10
you've had in this part of the country
00:32:12
hard dog lovers we have dogs we have
00:32:15
hunting dogs
00:32:16
we care a lot about our dog there's
00:32:19
people in this county who would shoot
00:32:21
you a whole lot quicker over there dog
00:32:23
than they would away within ten months
00:32:27
of the fire Mabel had built a loot
00:32:28
kennel she is still haunted by the
00:32:31
memory of that tragic night he fears
00:32:33
that whoever was responsible may strike
00:32:36
again at any time when I rebuilt my
00:32:40
kennel I built it right onto my house so
00:32:44
it's hard to tell where where my
00:32:46
territory ends and the dogs begin and
00:32:50
then to make them even safer I built an
00:32:54
8 foot masonry wall all the way around I
00:32:57
know someone could scale it but also at
00:33:01
night or if I'm gone I have a couple of
00:33:03
big dogs that I let out and the dogs do
00:33:07
not like people our concern for Mabel
00:33:12
safety is an ongoing thing we keep an
00:33:15
eye on that lady
00:33:16
we keep an eye on her probably Mabel's
00:33:20
unknown enemies have continued to
00:33:22
terrorize her in the two-and-a-half
00:33:24
years since the fire 40 pounds of nails
00:33:27
have been spread across her driveway she
00:33:30
has received numerous death threats on
00:33:31
the phone on two separate occasions her
00:33:34
house has been shot at and just recently
00:33:36
graffiti with a sinister warning quiet
00:33:40
or die was painted across the entrance
00:33:43
sign to her kennel
00:33:47
Mabel's friends and family fear for her
00:33:49
safety
00:33:50
they have urged her to move but Mabel is
00:33:53
determined to stay I thought about it
00:33:57
and I decided this was a perfect farm
00:34:00
it's it's very pretty I've got the creek
00:34:02
which I love I decided I am NOT going to
00:34:05
leave it is my farm I bought it paid for
00:34:08
it and I'm staying in a moment a story
00:34:13
of five Hawaiian fisherman who vanished
00:34:15
in a severe storm almost 10 years later
00:34:17
clues to their fate were found on a
00:34:19
remote Pacific island 3,000 miles away
00:34:22
did some of the crews survive the
00:34:35
Hawaiian island of Maui one of the
00:34:37
nation's most beautiful tourist centers
00:34:40
but Maui is also dotted with tiny
00:34:43
villages dependent on the unpredictable
00:34:45
Pacific for their livelihood one of
00:34:49
these traditional fishing villages is
00:34:50
Hana a town of approximately 1,200
00:34:53
people located on Maui southeast shore
00:34:58
February 11th 1979 on the spur of the
00:35:02
moment five local men took the day off
00:35:04
planning on a few hours pleasure fishing
00:35:06
in a 17-foot Boston Whaler the Sarah Jo
00:35:10
when they left at about 10:00 in the
00:35:12
morning the water was very calm and it
00:35:17
was a nice clear day and
00:35:20
they gathered their equipment together
00:35:22
and prepared the whole time
00:35:26
[Music]
00:35:28
the five friends who went fishing at
00:35:30
morning or Benjamin Kalama Bronfman
00:35:32
aki-nee Scott Morman
00:35:35
Patrick wuzhen and Peter Henchard
00:35:40
between them the men had over 50 years
00:35:42
of seagoing experience amalya kini
00:35:45
earned his living is a professional
00:35:47
fisherman as a Sarah Joe left the harbor
00:35:52
the weather was fair but a 1 p.m. of
00:36:00
freak wind swept in from the mountains
00:36:02
the first warning that a storm was about
00:36:04
to strike the storm as dangerous as it
00:36:07
was unexpected the wind switching around
00:36:12
instead of coming from the normal
00:36:14
direction which is from the
00:36:15
east-northeast it switched them came
00:36:17
from mountains going out to sea and this
00:36:20
concerned me a great deal so I told Dave
00:36:23
say we've got to get down the coast see
00:36:25
if we can spot those poison waived the
00:36:27
men within hours the storm arrived in
00:36:31
all of his fury John Hansen went out
00:36:33
into the teeth of the gale the search
00:36:35
for the Sarah Joe and his son Peter by
00:36:39
this time was really
00:36:40
going again and the rain was been come
00:36:43
down it was storming and we went out a
00:36:46
Hana haba about a half a mile and then
00:36:48
down the coast and I still didn't see
00:36:51
any sign of the voice but it was a very
00:36:53
rough trip my oceans were fierce I'd
00:36:57
never seen him get that rough hand
00:37:04
should continued his search the next day
00:37:05
with the help of marine biologist John
00:37:07
Norton made quite an impression on me to
00:37:10
see to think that this man was out all
00:37:13
day yesterday and in 30 to 40 knot winds
00:37:17
and 20 to 25-foot seas in this channel
00:37:19
looking for his for his son he's you're
00:37:23
hoping coming in that someone had seen
00:37:26
something during the day and they'd have
00:37:28
some encouraging news but they had the
00:37:30
same news that we brought him that was a
00:37:31
no sign of the boys no sign of the boat
00:37:34
no sign of any anything the next day the
00:37:40
Coast Guard continued the search of the
00:37:42
Sara Joan the initial place where you
00:37:45
start searching was very ill-defined
00:37:46
because we weren't really sure exactly
00:37:48
where the Sergio had gone fishing so it
00:37:51
encompassed a relatively large area
00:37:54
initially that first day and then the
00:37:57
area gets bigger and bigger bigger when
00:37:59
the conditions are rough I was very
00:38:00
difficult whether you're in the air are
00:38:01
in the on the water and combine that
00:38:04
with the fact that the Sara Joe was was
00:38:06
a turquoise blue color with white trim
00:38:09
in an ocean that's turquoise blue with
00:38:11
white Whitecaps who had been very very
00:38:13
difficult when the search was finally
00:38:16
suspended five days later we have
00:38:18
searched 73,000 square miles
00:38:21
[Music]
00:38:26
during the following weeks the residents
00:38:29
of Hana combed the nearby beaches
00:38:30
looking for the wreckage of the Sarah Jo
00:38:33
[Music]
00:38:36
finally they gave up the search they
00:38:39
never gave up hope
00:38:43
these people are not going to become
00:38:45
obsessed with impossibilities but on the
00:38:50
other hand they don't forget Heavenly
00:38:54
Father the SD to be amongst us
00:38:59
as we unify to commemorate the 10th
00:39:03
anniversary of the Sarah Jones
00:39:05
disappearance the family and friends of
00:39:07
the missing sailors gathered on the pier
00:39:09
the five men departed help us to
00:39:12
understand when we have all been through
00:39:15
as time passed it seemed that memories
00:39:18
are all that were left of the missing
00:39:19
men and the Sarah Joe
00:39:21
[Music]
00:39:27
[Music]
00:39:29
a September the 9th 1988 the story of
00:39:32
the Sarah Joe took a bizarre turn ten
00:39:38
years after the tiny boat disappeared in
00:39:40
two thousand miles west of Maui in the
00:39:42
Marshall Islands a wrecked boat was
00:39:44
spotted on a tiny island at all of
00:39:46
Tianyi incredibly the man who first saw
00:39:50
it was John Martin the marine biologist
00:39:52
who would search for the Sarah Joe back
00:39:54
in 1979 but first we thought it was a
00:39:58
boat moored offshore so we approached
00:40:01
closer and then we saw that it was a
00:40:03
what looked to be a battered small boat
00:40:07
on the island itself Norton and his crew
00:40:13
landed to examine the wreckage as we
00:40:16
rounded a bend in the island on the
00:40:18
windward side there we could see the
00:40:20
white column of the boat and on the
00:40:23
starboard bow
00:40:25
there was still a few letters and
00:40:26
numbers from the registration number and
00:40:30
immediately I saw the that started with
00:40:32
an H a which indicates that the boat was
00:40:34
registered in the Hawaiian Islands which
00:40:36
of course is over over 2,000 miles away
00:40:39
approximately 60 yards away from the
00:40:41
wreckage
00:40:42
not this companions discovered a
00:40:43
makeshift grave we walked over there and
00:40:47
they were standing over a pile of coral
00:40:50
rocks with a crude wooden cross sticking
00:40:54
out of it and when we got up there we
00:40:58
could see immediately that there was a
00:40:59
human jaw bone protruding out of the
00:41:02
pile of rocks at that time we had no way
00:41:06
of knowing that the gravesite was
00:41:08
associated with the wreck Whaler
00:41:09
although we had a fairly good we had a
00:41:11
we had a feeling that it may be because
00:41:13
it was in such close proximity somebody
00:41:16
obviously had to bury the guy and and
00:41:18
they may still be on the island here
00:41:19
Amen found no evidence that the island
00:41:21
was inhabited Naughton recorded the
00:41:24
registration numbers of the waiter and
00:41:26
left the site undisturbed the coastguard
00:41:30
ran a check of these numbers and made a
00:41:32
positive identification the whaler was
00:41:35
is Sarah Joe it was so amazing that not
00:41:39
would end up finding the boat and they
00:41:42
grave and things like that I haven't I
00:41:45
hadn't seen him in the meantime
00:41:48
laughter the Coast Guard identification
00:41:50
of the wreckage the grave was excavated
00:41:52
and a partial human skeleton was
00:41:54
uncovered dental records revealed that
00:41:58
the remains were those of one of the
00:42:00
five missing men Scott Morman another
00:42:05
strange clue surfaced when unusual
00:42:07
pieces of paper were discovered in the
00:42:09
grave these papers have been buried
00:42:12
deliberately it was a sheaf of paper and
00:42:16
I'd say a book except that was not bound
00:42:17
probably three inches by three inches by
00:42:20
maybe three quarters of an inch thick
00:42:22
but between each one of these pieces of
00:42:24
paper there was a very small square
00:42:28
piece of tin foil material we have not
00:42:31
be able determined to place that there
00:42:33
or or what purpose it serves experts
00:42:37
agree that the Sarah Joe could have
00:42:39
drifted the 2,000 miles to the Marshall
00:42:41
Islands a chain of tiny islands on the
00:42:43
western Pacific
00:42:45
this void should have taken three months
00:42:47
but according to the brother of one of
00:42:49
the missing men a US government survey
00:42:52
of Tianyi in 1985 found no trace of the
00:42:55
Sarah Jo if this is true then where was
00:43:00
a Sarah Jo during the six years between
00:43:02
its 1979 disappearance and this 1985
00:43:06
survey in 1985 he said there was no
00:43:10
sewage or no surgeon on duty on the
00:43:13
island where was the suture
00:43:17
what happened to the Sarah Joe during
00:43:19
these six last year's where were the
00:43:22
five missing men who buries Scott Mormon
00:43:25
and why and perhaps most importantly
00:43:30
could any of the men still be alive
00:43:34
every time I look at the ocean
00:43:37
my thoughts Goodley I see him way out
00:43:42
you know island someplace I live and
00:43:48
waited we want to know what happened to
00:43:52
the other boys were they on that island
00:43:55
with the boat and with Scott what maybe
00:44:00
someone around has some information they
00:44:02
can enlighten us on that

00:44:09
finally tonight another edition of FBI
00:44:11
alert the FBI hopes is someone in our
00:44:14
audience can help solve a particularly
00:44:16
shocking crime committed just last month
00:44:18
the kidnapping of a baby boy only three
00:44:21
days old
00:44:23
Avery James Norris was born last
00:44:26
September 18th at Sinai Hospital in
00:44:28
Baltimore Maryland at 11:30 on the
00:44:31
morning of September 21st a woman
00:44:33
disguised as a nurse entered the
00:44:35
maternity ward and encountered Avery
00:44:37
with his mother Linda Norris in her
00:44:38
hospital
00:44:39
apparently familiar with hospital
00:44:41
routines she instructed Linda to hand
00:44:43
her the baby and returned to bed for a
00:44:46
physical examination after pulling the
00:44:48
privacy curtain around the bed the woman
00:44:51
and Avery disappeared this has really
00:44:54
been I guess one of the hardest things I
00:44:56
have to ever have to face in my life I
00:44:59
can't imagine going on from day to day
00:45:02
without having him back Avery weighed 8
00:45:05
pounds 12 ounces at birth
00:45:07
his circumsized and has an oval
00:45:09
birthmark on the inside at the top of
00:45:11
his right leg his alleged kidnapper has
00:45:14
been described as a light-skinned black
00:45:15
female and may be Pakistani or Indian
00:45:18
she is 30 to 35 years old 125 pounds
00:45:22
with a stocky build and shoulder-length
00:45:24
black hair we believe that the
00:45:27
individual who abducted Avery Norris is
00:45:29
a person who has an emotional need the
00:45:32
individual may change the appearance of
00:45:33
the child but she's still going to be
00:45:36
proud of this child and she's gonna want
00:45:38
to let individuals know that she does
00:45:39
happen
00:45:40
[Music]
00:45:43
tonight were happy to report that Avery
00:45:46
James Norris is back in the loving arms
00:45:47
of his parents that his alleged abductor
00:45:50
is behind bars
00:45:53
November 15th the Maryland State
00:45:56
Division of vital records received a
00:45:58
call from a woman who claimed that she
00:45:59
had given birth to a baby boy at her
00:46:01
home two months earlier the caller 33
00:46:06
year old Carlene Victoria Wilkinson said
00:46:08
she wished to obtain a birth certificate
00:46:10
for her son
00:46:11
tavon Anthony Wilkinson authorities
00:46:14
immediately became suspicious and began
00:46:16
an investigation a DNA test later
00:46:20
confirmed that Avon Anthony Wilkinson
00:46:22
was actually Avery James Norris
00:46:29
on November 16th two month old Avery
00:46:31
James Norris went home with his parents
00:46:33

00:46:42
