tonight on unsolved mysteries imagine
00:00:10
our great cities leveled in a blinding
00:00:12
flash North America consumed by flame
00:00:15
the entire planet enveloped in a massive
00:00:18
cloud of smoke and debris the agent of
00:00:21
this mass destruction
00:00:22
a giant asteroid perhaps undiscovered
00:00:25
until it is too late on Valentine's Day
00:00:30
our thoughts naturally turn to love for
00:00:32
centuries men and women have been
00:00:34
consumed by a never-ending quest for

00:00:41
the mind and the heart
00:00:43
when Robert Durst died of a gunshot
00:00:46
his family had little choice but to
00:00:48
accept the police ruling of suicide then
00:00:51
the arrival of a mysterious letter and
00:00:53
the uncanny testimony of a psychic
00:00:55
brought the case back to life join me

00:01:59
admit it
00:02:00
unless you're Mick Jagger a Madonna you
00:02:03
probably wished for a magic potion that
00:02:05
could transform you into the consummate
00:02:07
lover returned that aloof stranger into
00:02:10
your adoring sweethearts you're not
00:02:13
alone for the last few thousand years
00:02:17
from Afghanistan to Zanzibar men and
00:02:20
women have searched high and low for the
00:02:21
perfect aphrodisiac
00:02:23
wishful thinking or are the recipes for
00:02:27
romance that deliver the goods modern
00:02:30
science has a surprising answer one of
00:02:33
the traditions in Europe was that
00:02:35
newlywed couples would drink a wine made
00:02:38
of honey every night and this would be a
00:02:41
way for them to help increase their
00:02:42
energy during the first month of their
00:02:44
marriage and that's where the word
00:02:45
honeymoon came about and of course we
00:02:48
know honey is very very high in B
00:02:49
vitamins and amino acids and is a very
00:02:53
very highly nutritious product plus it
00:02:55
gives the body energy which is required
00:02:57
also for healthy sex
00:02:59
[Music]
00:03:01
even the straight-laced Puritans in
00:03:03
colonial America had an aphrodisiac
00:03:06
the dandelion weed which we now know is
00:03:09
rich in vitamin A and other elements
00:03:12
that jumpstart the engines of love but
00:03:16
since time immemorial oysters have
00:03:18
enjoyed a reputation as the food for
00:03:20
lovers for some just a peek at the
00:03:23
succulent mollusk can provoke thoughts
00:03:25
of sex lab tests indicate that the
00:03:28
oysters fame is honestly earned zinc is
00:03:32
a mineral that's required for the
00:03:35
production of testosterone and
00:03:36
testosterone is the most important
00:03:38
hormone for sexual response in both men
00:03:41
and women and oysters have more zinc
00:03:43
than almost any other food though dr.
00:03:47
Watson has spent years studying
00:03:48
aphrodisiacs many patients have come to
00:03:50
her Southern California office are not
00:03:52
lovesick at least that's not at the top
00:03:55
of their list so Charlie are you having
00:03:58
trouble sleeping yeah I'm only getting
00:04:00
Charlie was there because his 18 hour
00:04:02
work days had ground him down beyond
00:04:04
exhaustion rested I get up and walk
00:04:06
around I can't get back to sleep
00:04:08
she starts to steer questions to how I'm
00:04:10
one of my activities like am i energetic
00:04:13
do I exercise you know how's my love
00:04:15
life that was kind of an odd switch
00:04:18
because most doctors don't take you down
00:04:20
that path and how are these problems
00:04:22
affecting you sexually well it's taking
00:04:25
its toll on my relationship to the point
00:04:27
where it's non-existent and dr. Watson
00:04:30
prescribe a slower pace plus a regimen
00:04:33
of herbs and vitamins but would they
00:04:35
cure Charlie's exhaustion and rev up his
00:04:37
love life the transformation began
00:04:41
during that first visit to the office I
00:04:45
saw this little box of chocolates and I
00:04:47
just started nibbling away and I'm
00:04:49
hungry and so I'm just popping these
00:04:51
things eating them achoo and we are
00:04:52
great chocolates but these were not
00:04:56
merely great chocolates dr. Watson has
00:04:59
spiced them up with a mix of South
00:05:00
American herbs known for giving the
00:05:02
libido a lift
00:05:05
I started to eat these things and I'm
00:05:07
boiling up the wrappers and you know
00:05:09
there's pocket size I'm thinking oh this
00:05:11
is great little little snacks relate and
00:05:14
I got a couple my pocket excuse me oh hi
00:05:16
how Mendes Chuck's have you eaten
00:05:18
already no I had a whole bunch why
00:05:22
because it's a dr. Watson's love potions
00:05:24
love potions what's that those are
00:05:27
aphrodisiacs aphrodisiacs really Charlie
00:05:30
took some of the chocolates to share
00:05:32
with his girlfriend okay he came home
00:05:36
early made dinner put on sweet music
00:05:39
hope for the best
00:05:42
we're nothing in Avenel desert force
00:05:45
Charlie was already halfway to Paradise
00:05:47
and probably could have left dr.
00:05:49
Watson's love drops on the mantle but
00:05:52
Charlie wasn't taking any chances

00:06:00
aphrodisiacs where did you get them by
00:06:05
half an hour later I'm sitting there and
00:06:06
she's playing with my hair and I'm
00:06:09
sitting you're gone it's working so glad
00:06:12
you didn't have to work late she didn't
00:06:14
say that she felt that anything
00:06:16
different she said oh I just feel you
00:06:18
know normal well I can tell you if she
00:06:20
wasn't normal she was better than normal
00:06:24
cuddly huggy you know paying attention
00:06:27
to me and it progressed into a really
00:06:28
nice steamy evening which was after all
00:06:31
we could all use one of those once in a
00:06:33
while the mind is the best aphrodisiac
00:06:36
we have yet there are really physical
00:06:38
components that happen I see it in my
00:06:41
practice I see men and women who really
00:06:43
want to have great sex but something's
00:06:46
wrong physically chemically that
00:06:48
something's just not happening and
00:06:49
definitely when they take the herbs
00:06:51
which react in the body in that chemical
00:06:54
process definitely there's a change
00:06:56
there's an improvement when people say
00:06:59
you're taking an aphrodisiac you know
00:07:01
you're taking an aphrodisiac isn't it
00:07:03
all in your mind isn't it a placebo and
00:07:06
I look at them and I say it's very
00:07:09
possible that it is I mean there's tons
00:07:11
of medical records that show people been
00:07:13
given placebo medicine that cured
00:07:15
themselves
00:07:16
but hey who cares as long as it gets you
00:07:18
there the will spring of passion will
00:07:23
undoubtedly remain one of life's great
00:07:25
mysteries as for aphrodisiacs perhaps
00:07:29
the most potent of all is the heartfelt
00:07:31
phrase I love you before flying off in
00:07:38
search of romance a few down-to-earth
00:07:39
warnings prior to ingesting any kind of
00:07:42
love potion be sure to consult your
00:07:44
physician and remember giving someone
00:07:47
drugs are aphrodisiacs without their
00:07:49
knowledge and consent may be a crime
00:07:51
punishable by law when in doubt try a
00:07:54
box of chocolates or a dozen roses
00:08:01
coming up it may be the greatest danger
00:08:04
our planet will ever face giant
00:08:07
asteroids and meteors drifting
00:08:08
undetected through space when or where
00:08:11
one will strike cannot yet be predicted
00:08:14
but first when a Marine helicopter
00:08:16
assigned to transport the president
00:08:19
crashes in America a self-taught
00:08:21
aviation investigator launches his own

00:08:36
the following story originally aired on
00:08:39
February 14th 1997 since then there have
00:08:42
been dramatic developments regarding the
00:08:44
murder of Bill Cosby's son Ennis on
00:08:48
January 16 1997 27 year-old Ennis
00:08:51
William Cosby was shot to death while
00:08:53
changing a flat tire only one witness a
00:08:58
woman is known to have caught a glimpse
00:08:59
of the suspected assailant according to
00:09:02
that woman the man who authorities
00:09:04
believed murdered Ennis was a white male
00:09:06
wearing a light-colored knit cap he was
00:09:09
25 to 32 years old of average height and
00:09:12
weight our evidence at this time would
00:09:15
indicate a random type of situation a
00:09:18
random crime and again the most logical
00:09:21
motive at this time is robbery other
00:09:24
scenarios may come as we move along and
00:09:26
follow these leads that the public give
00:09:27
to us right now it appears that it's a
00:09:30
random crime and the robbery is the most
00:09:31
logical motive here's what we know about
00:09:35
1:30 a.m. Ennis cosby pulled off the 405
00:09:39
freeway on to a lonely off-ramp near
00:09:41
Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles he
00:09:44
called a woman on a cell phone and told
00:09:46
her he had a flat tire she went to the
00:09:49
scene she was sitting in her car when
00:09:51
the suspect rapped on her window she
00:09:53
drove away in a panic when she returned
00:09:56
minutes later Ennis cosby was dead his
00:09:59
attacker was nowhere to be seen during
00:10:03
the next few days police searched for
00:10:05
more possible witnesses sorting through
00:10:07
hundreds of tips we have been contacted
00:10:10
by several people who believe they may
00:10:13
have seen something they're either seen
00:10:15
mr. Cosby before the shooting when he
00:10:19
was still alive or may have seen
00:10:20
something shortly thereafter a bel-air
00:10:23
security guard gave police a description
00:10:25
of a man in a blue hatchback he had seen
00:10:27
in the area minutes before the murder
00:10:29
police hoped that they had gotten a
00:10:31
major break when they tracked that man
00:10:33
to a mini mall and nearby Torrance
00:10:35
California but it quickly came to
00:10:37
nothing well we're always disappointed
00:10:40
if a lead turns out that it isn't what
00:10:43
we thought it was going to be or hoped
00:10:44
it would be on the other hand it's a
00:10:46
lead that becomes eliminated and allows
00:10:48
you to go on and spend your time in the
00:10:50
productive areas of the leads that we
00:10:51
have not eliminated police are certain
00:10:55
someone knows a suspect they are hoping
00:10:58
that person will recognize this
00:11:00
composite and call them with a critical
00:11:02
tip there's a mother there's a father
00:11:05
there's a sister there's a brother there
00:11:07
are friends who know this suspect they
00:11:09
know that he committed this crime and we
00:11:11
want them to come forward we have a
00:11:13
brutal suspect somebody that carries a
00:11:15
weapon somebody that is probably an
00:11:18
experienced criminal and has committed
00:11:20
these types of crimes before

00:11:50
seven months a pass is a night TWA
00:11:53
flight 800 crashed into the Atlantic off
00:11:55
the coast of Long Island killing more
00:11:57
than 200 people
00:11:58
the spider likely ruling of mechanical
00:12:01
failure rumors about the cause of the
00:12:03
tragedy have run rampant most incredible
00:12:09
was a theory that the plane went down
00:12:11
because of an accidental missile attack
00:12:13
by her own military outlandish perhaps
00:12:16
but it's not the first time such charges
00:12:19
have been leveled since 1993 similar
00:12:26
rumors have swirled around the crash of
00:12:28
a United States Marine Corps helicopter
00:12:30
but this was no ordinary helicopter it
00:12:33
was one of a small fleet used to
00:12:35
transport the President of the United
00:12:37
States the president of course was not
00:12:43
on board when the helicopter went down
00:12:44
but tragically four crewmen were as with
00:12:48
flight 800 the controversy surrounding
00:12:51
the crash pits a theory of mechanical
00:12:53
failure against an accusation of
00:12:55
friendly fire with one ominous twist a
00:12:58
secret weapon straight out of science
00:13:00
fiction
00:13:05
it was an overcast morning in May of
00:13:07
1993 shortly before noon a blackhawk
00:13:10
helicopter flew over a wooded area near
00:13:12
Washington DC and archeologist named
00:13:18
Frank Owens and his assistants saw the
00:13:20
helicopter fly by half an hour later
00:13:23
they discovered the crash site this is a
00:13:25
first time Frank Owens has agreed to be
00:13:27
interviewed for national television we
00:13:31
were driving down a road when off to our
00:13:33
right I glanced and I saw the tail
00:13:36
section of a helicopter and a clearing
00:13:40
we put in Reverse we stopped we jumped
00:13:43
out as we walk down the logging road I
00:13:47
could tell that this was a presidential
00:13:49
helicopter
00:13:52
the local authorities responded within
00:13:54
minutes the wreckage was strewn across
00:13:56
an acre and a half of dense forests all
00:13:59
four crewmen were dead within an hour
00:14:04
heavily armed unit of Marines secured
00:14:07
the area three months later the Marine
00:14:09
Corps released what is known as a Jag
00:14:11
report the official conclusion was that
00:14:14
the crash have been caused by mechanical
00:14:16
failure due to faulty maintenance
00:14:21
portions of the report stunned Frank
00:14:23
Owens in the weeks after the accident he
00:14:26
has spent considerable time at the crash
00:14:28
site erecting a memorial to the crew the
00:14:33
Jag report indicated that all debris all
00:14:36
jet fuel had been taken care of
00:14:38
everything had been removed in a very
00:14:41
very professional way I found that not
00:14:44
to be true Frank says he has the proof
00:14:49
at his home 43 pounds of wreckage that
00:14:51
he collected at the site when Frank
00:14:54
decided to launch an investigation he
00:14:56
attracted the attention of several
00:14:57
military and weapons researchers yeah
00:15:01
when you look at the crash of this
00:15:03
presidential helicopter the Blackhawk
00:15:05
and you compare it with the TWA 800
00:15:09
crash on Long Island Sound here they
00:15:14
have scraped the bottom of the ocean for
00:15:16
months to recover the most minut pieces
00:15:20
of debris from the aircraft they've
00:15:22
tried to essentially reassemble the
00:15:24
airplane as completely as possible and
00:15:27
that's what they do in every aircraft
00:15:28
accident investigation and then you look
00:15:31
at the fact that this is a presidential
00:15:32
helicopter
00:15:33
makes you wonder what were they thinking
00:15:35
what were their motives it's it's highly
00:15:37
unusual according to the Jag report the
00:15:43
accident was caused by improperly
00:15:44
installed roll pins 2-inch metal rods
00:15:47
that connect the transmission to the
00:15:49
engine after speaking to the individuals
00:15:53
the Train change these roll pins they
00:15:55
felt that they did it correctly I feel
00:15:58
that something else brought this
00:16:00
helicopter down in talking to officials
00:16:03
from the aircraft
00:16:06
they say that if in fact that roll pen
00:16:09
were misplaced the aircraft wouldn't
00:16:11
have flown and that roll pen was
00:16:13
replaced a month before the aircraft
00:16:16
crashed in the interim President Clinton
00:16:20
had gotten on this helicopter and flown
00:16:22
from Washington DC all the way down to
00:16:25
Norfolk Virginia and out to the USS
00:16:27
Roosevelt and back to DC and it
00:16:30
stretches all kinds of credibility not
00:16:33
to mention the laws of physics that this
00:16:36
helicopter would fly that long and that
00:16:38
far if these pins had been improperly
00:16:40
installed as the Marine Corps says six
00:16:46
across Frank Owens believes other clues
00:16:49
can be found by studying the flight path
00:16:51
of the helicopter and they continued in
00:16:54
a south direction I was here when I
00:16:57
observe the helicopter fly overhead this
00:16:59
is my location as I continued through
00:17:02
this area here at Point 16 they made a
00:17:05
dramatic change in course the thing I
00:17:07
found most significant about the flight
00:17:10
path of the helicopter was that the
00:17:12
pilot was extremely experienced he made
00:17:15
an extreme u-turn which indicates that
00:17:17
he believed something was wrong and he
00:17:19
was heading back and then he passed over
00:17:21
a field large enough to land a dozen
00:17:23
helicopters into crashing the trees just
00:17:25
a few hundred yards beyond it really
00:17:28
kind of made me wonder if it was
00:17:29
possible that he could have division
00:17:31
could have been impaired
00:17:33
I'm not certain what the cause of the
00:17:35
crash was I don't think it's what the
00:17:38
Marine Corps claims and there is
00:17:42
physical evidence and circumstantial
00:17:45
evidence that indicates the helicopter
00:17:50
could have been exposed to microwave
00:17:53
radiation if true it is a stunning
00:17:58
revelation during the Reagan
00:18:00
administration a number of high-tech
00:18:02
weapons were developed as part of the
00:18:03
Star Wars initiative allegedly one of
00:18:06
the systems involved microwave energy
00:18:08
designed to disrupt electronic equipment
00:18:11
and aircraft and missiles the helicopter
00:18:15
like the Black Hawk would be far more
00:18:17
susceptible to a microwave weapon
00:18:19
because it would directly interfere with
00:18:21
the flight control electronics so you
00:18:23
would immediately find that the
00:18:25
helicopter may become partially disabled
00:18:28
on its flying ability when you read
00:18:30
about the physical symptoms of exposure
00:18:33
to microwave energy and there are a
00:18:37
number of studies that have been done on
00:18:38
this with fish and with people and
00:18:40
animals one of the first things affected
00:18:42
is your vision because the microwave
00:18:45
energy heats the fluid in your eyes and
00:18:48
you can't see now such a weapon exists
00:18:53
apparently the Army has experimented
00:18:55
with high powered microwave technology
00:18:57
but most experts say an actual delivery
00:19:00
system is not yet a reality high-power
00:19:04
microwave weaponry does not exist period
00:19:06
there are no high-power microwave
00:19:07
weapons the work that's being done now
00:19:11
and over the last decade is to assess
00:19:15
whether or not the military electronics
00:19:19
of the United States and other powers
00:19:20
are vulnerable to high-power microwave
00:19:22
effect
00:19:24
but others disagree they believe such
00:19:27
weapons do exist and may have been
00:19:29
tested at this Army Research Lab in
00:19:31
blossom Point Maryland five miles from
00:19:33
the crash site Frank Owens and his
00:19:39
colleagues believe a high-powered
00:19:41
microwave is the only way to explain the
00:19:43
most baffling aspect of the entire case
00:19:46
unusual burn marks on each of the
00:19:48
victims bodies we asked dr. Richard
00:19:52
Grossman a leading burn specialist to
00:19:54
examine several of the autopsy photos it
00:19:57
doesn't have the appearance of an acid
00:20:00
burn it doesn't have the appearance of a
00:20:04
flame burn
00:20:07
but I can tell you that that tissue is
00:20:10
burned but I can't tell you what caused
00:20:13
it because I don't know the Marine Corps
00:20:19
had attributed the marks to chemical
00:20:21
burns from spilled fuel I don't think an
00:20:25
ignited jet fuel any kind of aviation
00:20:30
fuel would give you a contact burn like
00:20:33
this the kinds of microwave pulses that
00:20:37
are being studied as possible weapons
00:20:40
are not in anywhere near the domain
00:20:43
necessary to produce biological effects
00:20:47
on burns on humans can takes a great
00:20:50
deal of energy and there isn't much
00:20:52
energy in the microwave pulses that are
00:20:55
being produced what caused the crash of
00:20:59
the Black Hawk helicopter was it a
00:21:01
mechanical malfunction
00:21:03
or is a Marine Corps conceding a much
00:21:05
different scenario the accidental
00:21:08
downing of one of its own helicopters by
00:21:10
a top-secret weapon system
00:21:14
just recently Frank Owens informed us
00:21:17
that he is indefinitely suspending his
00:21:18
investigation out of respect for the
00:21:20
victims families
00:21:21
however he remains convinced that the
00:21:24
whole truth has yet to be uncovered the
00:21:26
Marine Corps stands by its original
00:21:28
report and considers the matter closed
00:21:34
next a disturbing unsigned letter and a
00:21:38
bizarre psychic vision lead to
00:21:40
speculation that the death of a loving
00:21:42
husband and father was not suicide and
00:21:44
later catastrophic danger lurks in the
00:21:48
infinite beauty of space are we on a
00:21:50
collision course with a giant asteroid
00:21:55
[Music]
00:22:05
we're surprised as anybody when one of
00:22:08
our earliest episode solves a crime
00:22:10
perhaps you'll recall this next story
00:22:13
first broadcast during our fourth season
00:22:15
it recently led to the identification
00:22:17
and indictment of an alleged killer
00:22:19
thanks to DNA a seven year old
00:22:22
fingerprint and of course one of our
00:22:24
viewers

00:22:28
Ethel kid was a youthful 61 when she
00:22:31
retired a rural Virginia in 1988 Ethel
00:22:36
look forward to a simple country life
00:22:37
just down the road from her daughter and
00:22:39
son-in-law Joanne and Thomas kid Thomas
00:22:44
would be the first to notice something
00:22:45
was wrong it was a morning of April 12th
00:22:48
1989 my wife called her mother about
00:22:53
7:30 and the after machine answered and
00:22:57
she said that's funny mom
00:22:59
must've left early either she's on her
00:23:01
way here to have a cup of coffee but
00:23:04
9:30 I rode by and I saw the car there
00:23:09
it was a bad sign
00:23:11
Ethel hadn't answered her phone if she
00:23:14
was out she would have taken her car
00:23:17
inexplicably a road atlas lay open in
00:23:20
the front yard
00:23:21
then another bad sign Ethel never left
00:23:27
the door unlocked
00:23:28
[Music]
00:23:29
inside concern turned to fear there was
00:23:32
no trace of Ethel kid anywhere eight
00:23:38
days crept by the nfl's body was
00:23:41
discovered in the woods nearby she had
00:23:43
been sexually assaulted strengthened
00:23:46
then left tied to a tree
00:23:49
the killer is extremely brazen it's even
00:23:54
as if he may have been taunting the
00:23:56
police saying catch me if you can a
00:24:01
suspect would indeed because however
00:24:04
authorities would need the help of one
00:24:06
very sharp eyed viewer
00:24:07
here's Keeley che Smith with more on the
00:24:10
improbable break in this case Bob from
00:24:15
the very start
00:24:16
investigators believe their best hope of
00:24:18
identifying the killer lay with the
00:24:20
Atlas that Thomas Kyd had found in
00:24:22
Ethel's yard they were right but it
00:24:24
would take seven years and several
00:24:25
reruns of the story for their hunch to
00:24:28
pay off at the Virginia Bureau of
00:24:32
forensic science technicians were able
00:24:34
to pull fingerprints from several pieces
00:24:36
of paper that had been tucked into the
00:24:38
Atlas but without a known suspect the
00:24:41
prints were useless the critical break
00:24:45
would come from what authorities judged
00:24:46
to be the killer's own list of
00:24:48
preparations for the abduction of Ethel
00:24:50
Kidd
00:24:52
this is the suspects checklist over the
00:24:55
years millions of viewers saw it but one
00:24:57
person actually thought the handwriting
00:24:59
looked very familiar
00:25:00
the tipster provided a name Edward Wayne
00:25:03
Beverly Beverly had lived in Burrell
00:25:07
Virginia just a few miles from Ethel
00:25:10
Kidd shortly after her murder he
00:25:12
abruptly left town Virginia authorities
00:25:16
finally located Beverly in a Tennessee
00:25:19
prison where he was serving time for
00:25:20
armed robbery
00:25:22
we compared fingerprints and they
00:25:25
matched to mr. bevel his prints and on
00:25:28
the victim's body there was evidence
00:25:30
there indicating sexual contact and we
00:25:36
compared mr. Beverly's blood through DNA
00:25:39
testing and that matches up also I'm
00:25:42
convinced that we had the right guy that
00:25:44
did this crime based on the evidence
00:25:46
that's available

robert darshan beloved husband and
00:26:25
father of five born 1923 died 1977
00:26:31
darshan was killed by a single gunshot
00:26:33
to the chest authorities called it
00:26:36
suicide for 16 long years der shells
00:26:39
wife and children had no choice but to
00:26:41
accept the official ruling all that
00:26:44
changed suddenly and unexpectedly in
00:26:46
March of 1993 guy darshan one of Roberts
00:26:50
sons received a letter postmarked March
00:26:53
13th 16 years to the day after his
00:26:56
father's death it's a small short letter
00:27:00
and block strange handwriting and I read
00:27:04
it once and I read it the second time
00:27:07
and I was just totally flooded with
00:27:10
emotion I was it was as if I'd been
00:27:14
kicked right in the chest
00:27:15
the letter was short just 35 words but a
00:27:20
stark message would turn the Durrell's
00:27:21
world upside down I have AIDS
00:27:25
I am dying I must make my peace with the
00:27:28
Lord I killed your daddy 15 years ago he
00:27:32
found me in his bedroom I had no choice
00:27:35
please pray for me
00:27:38
a mean-spirited hoax or sincere deathbed
00:27:43
confession without a signature a return
00:27:46
address there was no way to find out the
00:27:48
darshan alia believes that this letter
00:27:50
is genuine evidence that robert darshan
00:27:52
did not take his own life
00:27:54
what's more they say corroboration came
00:27:56
from an even more extraordinary source a
00:27:58
psychic vision from beyond the grave
00:28:01
this most unusual case began in the most
00:28:04
mundane matter
00:28:13
March 13th 1977 was a Sunday it was 7:30
00:28:17
a.m. an hour and a half before robert
00:28:20
darshan and his wife Jenny would head
00:28:22
off to church I heard a sound a loud
00:28:29
sound but I assumed it was the slamming
00:28:32
of the back door because the doors and
00:28:34
windows were all open and when you went
00:28:36
out to the pool that did slam a few
00:28:41
minutes later Jenny went to the bedroom
00:28:43
to dress her husband was bleeding from a
00:28:47
wound of the chest his shotgun lay
00:28:50
nearby I bent down enough to know that
00:28:53
he was dead I was sure he was gone I
00:28:56
don't think I touched him I called the
00:28:59
police and it seemed like they arrived
00:29:02
immediately time to get here 8:15
00:29:06
investigators found no evidence of a
00:29:08
break-in no sign of a struggle within 15
00:29:12
minutes they concluded that Robert Durst
00:29:14
all had committed suicide I say here the
00:29:17
left she was off I think what he did is
00:29:20
he sat on the edge of the bed but the
00:29:22
shotgun up to his chest pulled the
00:29:25
trigger was a big toe jenny argued that
00:29:27
her husband had merely been medicating a
00:29:29
foot ailment but she argued in vain it
00:29:32
would take the arrival of the mysterious
00:29:34
letter more than 16 years later to push
00:29:37
authorities to take a second look within
00:29:39
two weeks the case was reopened
00:29:44
the darshan family had never seen the
00:29:46
original police report on Robert's death
00:29:48
they secured a copy and went over it
00:29:51
word by word it was just so full of
00:29:57
untruths guesswork interviews of people
00:30:05
that hadn't seen my father in more than
00:30:08
two years close friends weren't spoken
00:30:14
to investigators had concluded that
00:30:18
darshan was driven to suicide by despair
00:30:21
over an unsuccessful surgery years
00:30:23
earlier the one interview that they
00:30:26
probably weigh most heavily is from a
00:30:28
nurse who hadn't seen him in two years
00:30:30
who gives a report about his health that
00:30:32
is so far from the truth that's it's
00:30:35
ridiculous she portrays him as a
00:30:38
bedridden vegetable where he was a happy
00:30:41
how fair ly healthy man had social life
00:30:43
he still traveled and still was a
00:30:45
productive salesman
00:30:46
it was strictly investigated as a
00:30:49
suicide I don't think there were any
00:30:52
fingerprints taken of the gun or
00:30:55
anyplace in the house and that was the
00:30:59
biggest mistake they made not
00:31:01
investigating I can see where it would
00:31:05
be difficult for family to accept a
00:31:09
decision like that when they feel that
00:31:12
perhaps their loved one may have been a
00:31:17
victim of some other circumstance but in
00:31:21
law enforcement we have to deal with
00:31:24
what the evidence tells us the original
00:31:27
investigation was conducted by the
00:31:29
Dunedin Police Department which
00:31:31
dissolved in 1995 the Pinellas County
00:31:34
Sheriff's Office later reviewed the
00:31:35
available case files there seemed to be
00:31:39
no sign of struggle no forcible entry no
00:31:44
broken windows disarray of any
00:31:47
description in the bedroom where this
00:31:49
encounter allegedly occurred which again
00:31:53
was one of the gives us more belief that
00:31:56
this was a suicide
00:31:59
without additional evidence a ruling
00:32:01
remains suicide but for Robert Durst
00:32:03
family the case was anything but closed
00:32:06
indeed it grew more and more bizarre in
00:32:10
February of 1995 Jenny's sister Fran
00:32:13
traveled from Florida to California Fran
00:32:16
who is now deceased told Jenny about an
00:32:18
unnerving encounter on the train an
00:32:21
episode that defies explanation to this
00:32:23
day yes
00:32:31
was your husband a doctor the young
00:32:34
woman was a total stranger but she
00:32:36
revealed an uncanny familiarity with
00:32:38
Fran and the Durrell's
00:32:40
well then your husband's name was Earl
00:32:42
he had a set right
00:32:48
well they're here with Bob Bob yes your
00:32:55
sister's husband and he was murdered
00:32:58
about 15 years ago murdered please don't
00:33:06
be frightened
00:33:08
I'm not a mystic or anything of that
00:33:10
kind my father passed away a number of
00:33:15
years ago and he sends me messages from
00:33:22
the other side I think it's best that I
00:33:26
write this down so that you can keep it
00:33:29
with you and give it to your sister
00:33:30
Jimmy friend said that the woman wrote
00:33:34
down her psychic vision on a napkin my
00:33:38
first reaction to psychic was I mean I
00:33:42
didn't believe in psychics I'm sorry and
00:33:46
yet the more I heard on the Amtrak train
00:33:49
I had to say I believe in this I see a
00:33:55
picture in my mind regarding the murder
00:33:58
of your sister's husband Bob
00:34:02
I see a narrow door opening
00:34:07
with a gun case showing
00:34:11
[Music]
00:34:13
and your sister's husband is going to
00:34:17
another cabinet
00:34:20
near the mirror
00:34:26
to look for foot treatment for athlete's
00:34:30
foot
00:34:31
[Music]
00:34:35
he looks up and he sees a stranger in
00:34:39
the adjoining room
00:34:43
alarmed the robber fights with Bob
00:34:57
[Applause]
00:35:00
the things that were written by the
00:35:03
young lady on the Amtrak train were
00:35:06
startling in that some of this
00:35:08
information wasn't anywhere to be found
00:35:11
it was just too real It was as if this
00:35:15
person was in the room she's made no
00:35:18
effort to to gain from it
00:35:21
there's been no no approach to us which
00:35:23
you would expect if there was a hoax and
00:35:25
I honestly believe it was a situation
00:35:29
that that took place that I can't
00:35:33
explain in the reality of this world
00:35:37
it's kind of spooky bobdor she'll died
00:35:42
at 54 seemingly well before his time
00:35:45
perhaps it was his choice made for
00:35:48
reasons known only to himself or perhaps
00:35:51
bobdor CIL's life was taken by a
00:35:53
stranger wrote from the deathbed asking
00:35:56
for forgiveness in my own mind my father
00:36:01
is a victim of murder and I would like
00:36:05
to be able to tell my children without a
00:36:08
question that this is what took place
00:36:10
and I would like the people who know my
00:36:12
father in the community to know what
00:36:14
happened there may be somebody out there
00:36:19
who was talked to by the killer revealed
00:36:25
something in prison to an attorney to a
00:36:28
parent to a friend it's a small world
00:36:31
and stranger things have happened that
00:36:33
that's one of my hopes is that somebody
00:36:35
out there can fit the last piece of the
00:36:39
puzzle into place
00:36:40
[Music]
00:36:42

00:37:34
the sprawl of Los Angeles pulverized the
00:37:37
entire country devastated in the blink
00:37:40
of an eye an atomic nightmare no a
00:37:44
natural disaster unparalleled in human
00:37:46
history a disaster no one can predict it
00:37:50
will come from outer space July 16th
00:37:56
1994 a frightening preview huge
00:37:59
fragments of a giant comet called
00:38:01
shoemaker-levy slammed into the planet
00:38:04
Jupiter causing the most massive chain
00:38:06
of explosions ever witnessed by man well
00:38:12
out of this 21 series of fragments there
00:38:16
were actually 15 that survived that we
00:38:18
saw hit the planet and of those about
00:38:20
four or five were the big ones when each
00:38:24
of those largest fragments hit Jupiter
00:38:26
had had about the same energy as if you
00:38:29
had taken all of the nuclear bombs in
00:38:32
the world but to gene shoemaker his
00:38:34
co-discoverer of the shoemaker-levy
00:38:36
comet
00:38:36
put them all in one big pile and set him
00:38:39
up set him off all at once that's about
00:38:42
10,000 million tons of energy one of the
00:38:48
impacts on Jupiter created a cloud of
00:38:50
debris as large as Earth this
00:38:52
cataclysmic event immediately brought
00:38:54
troubling questions to mind could it
00:38:56
happen here and what if it did could
00:38:59
life as we know it survive in a vast
00:39:02
cosmic shooting gallery
00:39:06
fortunately the odds are in our favor
00:39:09
astronomers estimate that here on earth
00:39:12
celestial disasters on the grand scale
00:39:14
of shoemaker-levy occur only once every
00:39:16
hundred million years but that's not to
00:39:19
say we're entirely safe at this very
00:39:21
moment there are literally thousands of
00:39:23
asteroids and comets streaking through
00:39:25
the solar system is it possible that one
00:39:28
the size of shoemaker-levy could collide
00:39:29
with our planet not only is it possible
00:39:32
it has already happened more than once
00:39:41
this is meteor crater three hours north
00:39:43
of Phoenix Arizona
00:39:45
it was here long before the dawn of
00:39:47
civilization that an asteroid slammed
00:39:49
into the desert floor scientists
00:39:53
estimated velocity at more than 40,000
00:39:55
miles per hour meteor craters the first
00:40:01
recognized impact crater on the earth
00:40:03
it's 4,000 feet across about 600 feet
00:40:06
deep
00:40:07
he was formed by an iron asteroid about
00:40:11
50 yards in diameter and it was formed
00:40:14
very close to 50 thousand years ago but
00:40:16
if you'd been there you wouldn't want to
00:40:19
bend too close if you had been standing
00:40:22
where Flagstaff is today 40 miles away
00:40:25
you'd have probably been knocked over by
00:40:27
the shockwave buildings would have been
00:40:29
collapsed but meteor activity on earth
00:40:34
isn't just consigned to ancient history
00:40:36
early the century in 1908 a fireball
00:40:39
raced through the sky over Siberia it
00:40:42
exploded above the remote area of
00:40:44
Tunguska spraying debris with a force of
00:40:47
a thousand atomic bombs to get a good
00:40:53
idea of a devastating effect of this
00:40:55
impact of it a city that did I know very
00:40:59
well Houston has surrounding it a
00:41:03
highway a Beltway highway 610 loop
00:41:07
everything inside the 610 loop would
00:41:09
have been flattened and charred all the
00:41:12
buildings all the infrastructure nothing
00:41:16
would have been standing inside that
00:41:18
area anyone who lived there would have
00:41:20
been dead incredibly such devastation
00:41:25
did occur on a worldwide scale at least
00:41:27
once in the history of our planet that
00:41:30
was 65 million years ago during the
00:41:32
reign of the dinosaur a gigantic meteor
00:41:36
some five miles in diameter smashed into
00:41:38
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula 75 miles east
00:41:42
of where the city of Veracruz now stands
00:41:44
the surface expression would not lead
00:41:52
you to believe that there is an impact
00:41:53
crater there you have a nice flat
00:41:56
Yucatan Peninsula with really no
00:41:59
topographic signs that a crater 180 to
00:42:02
200 miles across exists below
00:42:07
Virgil Sharpton has created this
00:42:09
three-dimensional map depicting the
00:42:11
Chicxulub crater immediately after
00:42:13
impact his detailed description of that
00:42:16
catastrophic event is chilling and very
00:42:19
possibly prophetic well immediately
00:42:22
before the impact we think you would see
00:42:24
a comet keep in mind that this object is
00:42:29
traveling at about a hundred and forty
00:42:30
thousand miles per hour you don't have a
00:42:35
lot of time between the time it goes
00:42:37
into the atmosphere and the time that
00:42:38
actually strikes the earth less much
00:42:40
less than a second obviously the impact
00:42:44
of Chicxulub was heard and felt in every
00:42:46
corner of the earth instantaneously the
00:42:48
ground surged up countless tons of rock
00:42:51
and dust formed a massive curtain
00:42:53
hundreds of miles across and hundreds of
00:42:56
miles high as this dust started to make
00:43:01
its way into the atmosphere it would
00:43:03
block the sunlight completely it would
00:43:05
be as dark as night as some of this
00:43:07
material started to re-enter the
00:43:09
atmosphere however things would begin to
00:43:12
light up not by the illumination of a
00:43:14
Sun but by the illumination of countless
00:43:16
meteorites shooting stars streaking
00:43:19
through the upper atmosphere
00:43:21
according to Sharpton these balls of
00:43:23
fire touched off a raging inferno the
00:43:25
spread across the entire Western
00:43:27
Hemisphere a smoke then rose to join
00:43:30
with the impact debris blanketing the
00:43:32
earth with an impenetrable cloud
00:43:37
darkness was achieved almost
00:43:39
instantaneously
00:43:41
and this cloud would basically expand
00:43:43
around the earth in a very short period
00:43:44
of time for the better part of a year
00:43:48
there was no sunlight what emerged was a
00:43:50
new ice age with his own catastrophic
00:43:53
consequences roughly 75% of Earth's
00:43:56
plant and animal life perished the most
00:43:59
prominent victim the dinosaur the
00:44:03
consensus is today that dinosaurs were
00:44:07
doing very nicely up until this event
00:44:10
and immediately after this event they
00:44:13
were gone and they never came back
00:44:19
there's a large enough risk that I think
00:44:23
we really should pay attention to it the
00:44:26
hazard of impact in terms of loss of
00:44:28
life on the original you don't take out
00:44:31
just a hundred thousand lives lost you
00:44:34
could wipe out half or more of the
00:44:36
entire human population if an event
00:44:39
similar to the one that formed chicks
00:44:41
eula happened tomorrow then there would
00:44:44
be no civilization there is no doubt
00:44:47
about that there would be widespread
00:44:51
devastation death like we have never
00:44:55
even imagined and there's no protection
00:45:00
for it it's just one of those things
00:45:02
that we have to live with fortunately
00:45:05
however events like Chicxulub are
00:45:07
extremely rare the present there are
00:45:13
only a handful of scientists worldwide
00:45:15
actively scanning us guys for near-earth
00:45:17
asteroids just recently scientists
00:45:20
discovered the hale-bopp comet which
00:45:22
will pass close enough to earth next
00:45:23
april to be seen without a telescope
00:45:26
despite our extremely limited warning
00:45:28
system it is calming to note that there
00:45:30
is no record of anyone ever being killed
00:45:33
by an asteroid
00:45:42
