May 23, 2019 / 45:13

This episode covers unexplained aerial phenomena, the mysterious disappearance and death of Dave Box, and remarkable animal journeys home. It features stories of pets traveling great distances to reunite with their owners, and the investigation into Box's death at a uranium processing plant.

The episode discusses strange lights in the sky, with some believing they are evidence of advanced military aircraft, while the Air Force denies involvement. Eyewitness accounts and video footage are presented, including a sighting in Roswell, New Mexico.

Another segment focuses on Sue Anderson's cat, Nova, who traveled 250 miles to find her after being lost during a move. Animal behaviorist Miriam Yard theorizes about the bond between pets and their owners, suggesting a form of mental telepathy.

The episode also highlights the story of the Riesgraf family, whose dog, Lady, traveled over 150 miles to return home after being separated during a forest fire. Their daughter Hannah's prayers for Lady's safety are emphasized.

Finally, the investigation into Dave Box's disappearance reveals troubling circumstances surrounding his death at the Fernald uranium processing plant, with his family suspecting foul play related to safety violations at the facility.

sue Anderson of Baltimore Maryland has
00:02:49
been an animal lover for as long as she
00:02:51
can remember in the spring of 1992 suit
00:02:55
packed her belongings for a
00:02:56
cross-country moved to Modesto
00:02:58
California the last thing she loaded up
00:03:01
in the van were her most valued
00:03:03
possessions her 5 beloved cats
00:03:05
I had puss and Cinderella and wooly
00:03:11
bugger and Nova and Stardust they're
00:03:15
like children to me in a way and I feel
00:03:18
when I take on the responsibilities of a
00:03:20
pet then that responsibility is mine
00:03:23
until the pet dies
00:03:26
sooo caravanned with her brother who was
00:03:28
also moving west the two of them along
00:03:31
with the five cats set off in tandem for
00:03:34
California pursues feline family who
00:03:39
were all house cats it was the first
00:03:41
time they had been further from home
00:03:42
than the local vet sue felt a special
00:03:45
affinity for Noland a black Shorthair I
00:03:49
gotten over about four years ago she was
00:03:54
left outside of my apartment she was
00:03:57
cold and frightened and hungry and knew
00:03:59
that she was being deserted she just
00:04:02
kind of clung to me and got very
00:04:04
attached to me and ever since then it's
00:04:06
been a very very close relationship near
00:04:12
the end of the trip sue says lava began
00:04:15
acting strangely she would climb up on
00:04:20
the seat behind me and she would talk in
00:04:22
my ear she would get up on the dash and
00:04:24
I would have to pull her down so I could
00:04:26
see around her she would sit in my lap
00:04:28
and get very affectionate want to be
00:04:30
petted animals that have left that I've
00:04:35
had that have run away or got separated
00:04:38
from me and passed always acted
00:04:41
extremely affectionate it's like they
00:04:42
were saying one final farewell
00:04:46
after 10 days on the road Sue and her
00:04:49
brother finally made it to California
00:04:51
how you doing
00:04:53
exhausted they pulled into a rest stop
00:04:55
south of Bakersfield 200 miles from
00:04:58
Modesto their final destination they
00:05:01
plan to sleep until daybreak before
00:05:03
pushing on
00:05:06
[Music]
00:05:35
oh no I felt devastated she was in a
00:05:42
strange place I'd never been here before
00:05:43
and excuse me I was worried about her
00:05:46
survival Sue's premonition about Nova
00:05:52
had apparently come true
00:05:53
she and her brother searched for an hour
00:05:55
but in the end Sue had to leave Nova
00:05:58
behind I was very very anxious about her
00:06:04
very very frightened for her and very
00:06:07
upset about the whole incident during
00:06:12
the next few weeks
00:06:14
sue started a job in San Jose and made
00:06:16
new friends but Nova was never far from
00:06:19
her thoughts a sympathetic co-worker
00:06:22
gave Sue a picture of a black cat as a
00:06:24
memento
00:06:25
every day when she got to work sue would
00:06:28
take a few minutes to gaze at the
00:06:30
picture and pray that Nova would somehow
00:06:32
find her people would stop by they would
00:06:37
always stop and say ah get real she's
00:06:39
never gonna come back you know how
00:06:40
you're just dreaming I said well maybe
00:06:42
one day she will so I kept it up there
00:06:44
the entire time I was working there a
00:06:47
[Music]
00:06:52
full year passed then on July 16th 1993
00:06:57
sue came across two stray cats outside
00:06:59
of work to Sue's amazement and against
00:07:11
all odds
00:07:12
Nova had journeyed some 250 miles
00:07:14
through completely foreign territory to
00:07:17
find her way too soon
00:07:23
she had a mole inside her ear she had
00:07:26
five or six distinguishing white hairs
00:07:30
on her chest and she let me look at her
00:07:34
claws and I could identify her claws all
00:07:36
these things were adding up that this
00:07:38
was indeed my cat
00:07:40
[Music]
00:07:48
how can we explain
00:07:50
Nova's incredible journey loaded animal
00:07:54
behaviorist Miriam Yard theorizes at
00:07:57
owners and their pets can form a bond
00:07:59
strong enough to develop a kind of
00:08:01
mental telepathy she told me that she
00:08:07
spent ten to twelve hours at her place
00:08:09
of work and by thinking of the cat than
00:08:12
seeing her own surroundings
00:08:15
subconsciously she was sending the
00:08:17
visual images to the cat come to this
00:08:20
area come to this place this is where I
00:08:22
am can I prove it no anyone can disprove
00:08:32
it probably not we don't know that's
00:08:37
half the fun in this particular case
00:08:39
that we can theorize I like to think
00:08:42
that there is enough of a bonding that
00:08:45
if you really believe in your capacity
00:08:48
to love
00:08:49
and let that love be a kind of a guiding
00:08:51
light that they will use that love to
00:08:55
get back to us when they want to and
00:08:57
that that's the sort of communication in
00:08:58
his own way

00:09:07
Mother's Day weekend 1992 John and Susan
00:09:11
Riesgraf of Duluth Minnesota and had
00:09:14
three children arrived at a cabin on the
00:09:16
edge of bear head Lake State Park 100
00:09:19
miles from their home the Reese grafts
00:09:22
have brought along their dogs lady
00:09:24
Akali and wolf code a Belgian Shepherd
00:09:28
it was springtime ice was coming off the
00:09:31
lake green leaves are starting to butt
00:09:33
out and it was just a good time to take
00:09:35
a break and we were real excited to be
00:09:37
there and go for hikes and take the dogs
00:09:39
out the Reese graphs had been to the
00:09:45
cabin on several occasions and felt
00:09:47
perfectly comfortable letting the dogs
00:09:48
out on their own
00:09:50
normally lady and wolf cub returned
00:09:52
within an hour but this time was
00:09:56
different we called for them to come in
00:10:00
and they didn't show and we thought well
00:10:02
there may be chasing a rabbit or
00:10:03
something they recalled continuing
00:10:06
through the morning and they didn't show
00:10:07
up and so we were concerned and we were
00:10:10
looking for them on the trails calling
00:10:12
for him and we thought they would show
00:10:14
up and they didn't
00:10:20
the next day a forest fire erupted -
00:10:23
just a few miles southwest to the reefs
00:10:25
crafts cabin the flames were headed in
00:10:27
their direction they had to evacuate
00:10:29
immediately leaving without the dogs was
00:10:34
especially difficult for seven-year-old
00:10:36
Hannah who had literally grown up with
00:10:39
lady and wolf Kerr I was scared because
00:10:43
I didn't know where they'd go and wish
00:10:47
we could have stayed when my mom told me
00:10:53
that we were good leaving I felt sad and
00:10:55
I wish we didn't have to leave the fire
00:11:02
was devastating it burned out of control
00:11:04
for three days and consumed more than
00:11:07
nine thousand acres of timberland
00:11:12
from their home in Duluth 100 miles away
00:11:15
the Ries graphs could do little more
00:11:17
than wait and hope for the best we had
00:11:21
called Susan's father and I had asked
00:11:25
him to go back to the cabin a few times
00:11:27
because I thought they would come back
00:11:29
to the cabin I thought that would be our
00:11:32
best hope but and he had done that and
00:11:35
had not seen anything
00:11:38
okay honey what do you want to pray for
00:11:40
tonight Hannah however refused to give
00:11:42
in to the unthinkable especially in the
00:11:45
case of lady her favorite please help
00:11:48
lady find her way home please protect
00:11:50
her and keep her safe
00:11:53
please pick her home very soon eight
00:11:56
every night in my bed I would pray
00:11:58
because I knew that the Lord if it was
00:12:01
his will that she would come home and I
00:12:05
felt that she would almost two weeks
00:12:12
after lady disappeared
00:12:13
a hungry bedraggled colleague wandered
00:12:16
up to a house on the outskirts of Duluth
00:12:18
incredibly Hanna's prayers and mm-hmm
00:12:34
yes this is a Ries craft family
00:12:37
you found lady out of the blue and some
00:12:42
folks that were about 15 miles from her
00:12:45
house Colin said your dog is in our yard
00:12:48
and he said wiped it and they said your
00:12:51
dog's a collar your name is lady is this
00:12:53
you know the telephone number I said yes
00:12:55
and I said do you realize you know this
00:12:58
dog has traveled a long way to get to
00:13:00
your yard
00:13:01
[Music]
00:13:05
finally after 13 days apart lady was
00:13:09
reunited with her family I felt really
00:13:19
happy that she was back that she would
00:13:22
be with our family again happy lady's
00:13:29
amazing adventure made headlines in
00:13:31
Duluth before long several people
00:13:34
contacted the Ries graphs and they
00:13:36
learned just how far lady had travelled
00:13:38
to make her way back home
00:13:40
a few days after lady's disappearance a
00:13:47
railroad worker spotted a collie 30
00:13:49
miles from the cabin the dog was
00:13:52
following a set of tracks leading east
00:13:55
[Music]
00:13:57
[Applause]
00:13:59
the eyewitness said that when he tried
00:14:02
to approach the dog she avoided him and
00:14:04
remained steadfast on her course
00:14:06
[Music]
00:14:09
about a week later another eyewitness
00:14:11
spotted a collie near an old logging
00:14:13
trail approximately 15 miles from Duluth
00:14:19
ladies incredible journey had begun here
00:14:22
at the cabin
00:14:22
the Ries graphs now believe that is a
00:14:25
fire spread she may have traveled east
00:14:27
into the Superior National Forest
00:14:29
she then swung south towards a city of
00:14:32
Isabela over the next few days lady was
00:14:35
spotted by the railroad worker and later
00:14:37
along the old logging trail eventually
00:14:41
lady ended up on the outskirts of Duluth
00:14:43
altogether she had traveled more than
00:14:45
150 miles the Reese grafts have no doubt
00:14:52
that lady would have made her way to
00:14:53
their house if she had not been taken in
00:14:56
by the kindly company she's found her
00:14:59
home and she's there to stay since this
00:15:03
long walk home she stays home it's like
00:15:06
she realized - this is my family and we
00:15:11
just appreciate her whole lot more
00:15:15
unfortunately the Reese grafts still do
00:15:17
not know what happened to their other
00:15:19
dog wolf kheh they can only hope that he
00:15:21
is safe perhaps adopted by a caring
00:15:24
stranger
00:15:26
while ad was successful in her journey
00:15:29
and Wilco was not is one of life's
00:15:31
mysteries perhaps just perhaps ladies
00:15:35
success can be attributed to the
00:15:36
powerful force she had guiding her the
00:15:39
love of a small child but Lee returned
00:15:45
strange lights in the night sky UFOs or
00:15:48
secret aircraft developed by our
00:15:50
military at one time or another we have
00:15:57
all looked up at the night sky and seen
00:15:59
something which you just cannot explain
00:16:01
recently there's been a rash of such
00:16:03
sightings unidentifiable lights and
00:16:06
objects it seemed to move like nothing
00:16:08
known to man some say they are UFOs
00:16:11
others speculate that they are a new
00:16:13
generation of sophisticated military
00:16:16
aircraft this video was shot by a camera
00:16:21
crew hired by Aviation Week magazine
00:16:23
eyewitnesses say it shows a pencil-thin
00:16:25
aircraft trailing balls of golden light
00:16:28
some believe it is evidence of an exotic
00:16:31
new propulsion system
00:16:35
in this footage a conventional airplane
00:16:38
seen here was being filmed when a
00:16:40
mysterious object suddenly appeared the
00:16:44
object traveled at a high rate of speed
00:16:45
and exhibited pinpoint maneuverability
00:16:49
in this haunting image several
00:16:52
eyewitnesses observed an unusual light
00:16:54
source possibly an aircraft hovering
00:16:56
over the Nevada desert
00:16:59
[Music]
00:17:01
and here an unknown wedge-shaped object
00:17:04
which made no noise
00:17:05
flies over Roswell New Mexico the
00:17:08
footage was shot by a man named Stephen
00:17:10
Douglas of Amarillo Texas
00:17:13
people have been sighting and witnessing
00:17:16
aircraft that can do fantastic amazing
00:17:20
things I mean high speed stop on a dime
00:17:23
turn like a ballet dancer or move
00:17:26
incredibly slow the mystery behind this
00:17:30
is there seems to be some aircraft that
00:17:34
have some fantastic flying abilities
00:17:37
that seem to be a quantum leap over
00:17:40
anything that's previously known Stephen
00:17:47
Douglas spends much of his time trying
00:17:48
to unravel the mystery of these
00:17:50
unidentified aircraft Douglass is an
00:17:53
aviation enthusiast and journalist who
00:17:55
publishes a newsletter called intercepts
00:17:58
Douglas believes that the mysterious
00:18:00
lights are in fact experimental military
00:18:03
jets which are being kept under wraps
00:18:06
just as a legendary stealth fighter was
00:18:08
for nearly a decade
00:18:11
until he was publicly unveiled in 1988
00:18:14
the air force for national security
00:18:16
reasons would not confirm rumors that
00:18:18
the stealth was being tested recently
00:18:22
there's been similar speculation about a
00:18:24
new spy plane reputed to travel at
00:18:26
speeds exceeding Mach 6 in 1992
00:18:30
Stephen Douglas obtained what he
00:18:32
believes as evidence that the plane may
00:18:34
actually exist it's probably bad 11:00
00:18:39
a.m. and the house began to rattle let
00:18:45
me call you back this house just really
00:18:47
shook I'm gonna find out what it is and
00:18:49
I'll need to call that it was more of a
00:18:50
vibration that was felt
00:18:54
so I went outside and there was this
00:18:57
aircraft flying by or the house
00:19:00
incredibly fast I seen a lot of the
00:19:02
aircraft crisscross the skies around
00:19:04
here but this thing I couldn't believe
00:19:06
how fast it was murder and behind it it
00:19:09
left a contrail that wood was unique
00:19:12
what they call it doughnuts on a rope
00:19:14
contra Stephen Douglas took this
00:19:18
photograph of the contrail some aviation
00:19:21
researchers believe it might have been
00:19:23
made by what is known as a pulse
00:19:24
detonation wave engine an experimental
00:19:27
technology allegedly used in the spy
00:19:30
plane the Air Force was unable to
00:19:32
identify the source of the contrail in
00:19:35
the photograph which raises an
00:19:37
intriguing question if it is not one of
00:19:39
our planes whose is it
00:19:43
a year later Douglas had another unusual
00:19:46
sighting he and his father-in-law
00:19:49
Elwood were in Roswell New Mexico to
00:19:51
videotape military airplanes that were
00:19:53
participating in mock war games shortly
00:19:57
after a group of b1 bombers took off an
00:19:59
unidentified aircraft entered the area
00:20:02
can you tell what that is
00:20:04
Elwood noticed an aircraft coming
00:20:06
towards us from the southwest as soon as
00:20:11
I started shooting tape the battery
00:20:14
light and the camera told me that the
00:20:16
batteries were about exhausted
00:20:18
I got possibly seven to ten seconds
00:20:21
before the batteries in the camera we
00:20:26
couldn't hear any sound at all this
00:20:28
aircraft made no sound at all it was
00:20:31
just super quiet it looked like like a
00:20:35
flying triangle and immediately I knew
00:20:38
hitmen must have been tr3 a Black Manta
00:20:43
the tr3 a black matter is another
00:20:47
high-tech aircraft that is widely
00:20:48
rumored to exist the matter is thought
00:20:52
to be a reconnaissance plane which
00:20:53
operates in tandem with a stealth
00:20:55
fighter but in a statement issued to
00:20:58
unsolved mysteries the Air Force said of
00:21:00
the matter quote it has no basis in
00:21:02
reality when the Air Force analyzed
00:21:06
Douglass's footage they believe the
00:21:08
aircraft might be a navy ea-6b Prowler
00:21:11
however the Navy could not identify the
00:21:14
plane citing the poor quality of the
00:21:16
videotape a computer enhancement of a
00:21:20
frame from the videotape appears to show
00:21:22
a triangular shaped wedge Douglass
00:21:25
claims the object was virtually silent
00:21:27
and moves slower than conventional
00:21:29
military aircraft but if the aircraft
00:21:32
does not belong to the Air Force and
00:21:34
cannot be identified by the Navy the
00:21:36
same question remains whose is it one of
00:21:42
the intriguing aspects of this story is
00:21:44
that the airport where douglas shot is
00:21:46
footage is in the same area or one of
00:21:48
the most controversial UFO episodes took
00:21:51
place more than 40 years ago
00:22:00
in 1947 army investigators from Roswell
00:22:04
Air Base went public with the shocking
00:22:06
news that a flying saucer had crashed on
00:22:08
a ranch in rural New Mexico a few days
00:22:12
later the army reversed itself and
00:22:14
claimed that what had actually been
00:22:15
found was a downed weather balloon
00:22:18
nevertheless many people are convinced
00:22:21
that the army did recover the wreckage
00:22:23
of a craft from somewhere other than
00:22:25
Earth and that now even more incredibly
00:22:28
the military has somehow managed to
00:22:30
glean the secrets of the UFO to achieve
00:22:33
a breakthrough in aviation technology
00:22:37
these aircraft are doing things which a
00:22:40
lot of physicists you have generally
00:22:42
said are not possible you know they were
00:22:44
maneuvers sir
00:22:45
why they fly how fast they are and the
00:22:49
real mysteries is how they made late
00:22:51
there are some that speculate that maybe
00:22:55
this technology was gleaned from alien
00:23:01
technology that somehow either we have
00:23:04
Harvard or it has been here for a while
00:23:11
UFO technology to power the next
00:23:13
generation of military aircraft at best
00:23:16
it is difficult to accept Stephen
00:23:19
Douglas believes that planes he has seen
00:23:21
were developed by our military using
00:23:22
conventional technology yet the military
00:23:25
says such aircraft do not exist is there
00:23:28
another explanation if the Pentagon has
00:23:31
the answer they are not saying and
00:23:32
perhaps just perhaps it is better that
00:23:36
way
00:23:38
[Music]
00:23:58
on a prior broadcast we explored one of
00:24:01
the great mysteries of religion the
00:24:03
Shroud of Turin according to the Bible
00:24:08
after Jesus was crucified he was wrapped
00:24:11
in a linen shroud more than 1,000 years
00:24:15
later a three and a half by 14-foot
00:24:18
linen cloth mysteriously turned up in
00:24:20
France it showed the faint image of a
00:24:24
man's body front and back
00:24:27
ever since believers have hailed this
00:24:30
cloth as a marvelous relic they claim
00:24:34
that Christ was buried in the shroud and
00:24:36
that his image was miraculously
00:24:38
imprinted on the cloth at the moment of
00:24:40
resurrection when I first began to study
00:24:44
the Shroud of Turin I was convinced it
00:24:46
was a crock and that it would take me
00:24:48
probably less than two hours to put away
00:24:51
this pious fraud after all anyone with
00:24:55
an IQ of a hundred or over knows that
00:24:58
all relics by definition are frauds but
00:25:00
I must admit here I am some 17 years
00:25:05
later I who came to scoff have stayed to
00:25:08
pray my own personal belief is that the
00:25:11
Shroud is probably authentic
00:25:15
skeptics regard the shroud as a
00:25:17
masterful painting a work of an unknown
00:25:19
Renaissance artist however those who
00:25:23
believe the Shroud was painted were
00:25:25
hard-pressed to explain two distinct
00:25:27
attributes first the total absence of
00:25:31
brushstrokes also when the shrouds image
00:25:35
is analyzed by computer it projects a
00:25:38
remarkable three-dimensional picture
00:25:40
almost like a sculpture virtually no
00:25:43
other work of art has this
00:25:44
characteristic what all was said and
00:25:48
done it seemed like the Shroud would
00:25:50
remain a tantalizing mystery a source of
00:25:53
endless speculation it was certainly the
00:25:56
last story we ever expected to update
00:25:58
but for every mystery there is someone
00:26:01
somewhere who never gives up trying to
00:26:03
find a solution
00:26:08
dr. Emily Craig a forensic
00:26:10
anthropologist and medical illustrator
00:26:12
claims that she is figured out the
00:26:14
secret using dry paint pigments ground
00:26:18
into a fine powder dr. Craig has created
00:26:21
an image on cloth that she believes
00:26:23
replicates the distinct qualities of the
00:26:25
Shroud it is an ancient technique known
00:26:28
as destroy I think it goes back to cave
00:26:32
paintings it goes back thousands of
00:26:34
years they've used carbon dust and
00:26:38
ochres and different natural occurring
00:26:42
pigments for centuries working first on
00:26:47
paper dr. Craig applies the dust more
00:26:49
heavily for the raised features of the
00:26:51
face the forehead nose lips and chin the
00:26:56
lower areas receive less pigment once
00:27:02
it's done to my satisfaction I want to
00:27:04
take a piece of linen you lay the linen
00:27:07
down and then taking a wooden spoon or
00:27:10
any flat flexible object we're just
00:27:14
going to rub the entire image and make a
00:27:17
direct transfer the image now on linen
00:27:23
satisfies one of the shrouds main
00:27:25
attributes there are no brush strokes
00:27:28
[Music]
00:27:31
dr. Randy Brizzy a textile scientist is
00:27:34
dr. Craig's partner he put the dust
00:27:37
drawing to his most important test the
00:27:39
same computer analysis that revealed the
00:27:42
shrouds hidden 3d properties the tests
00:27:49
showed that dr. Craig's method can
00:27:51
produce the singular 3d attribute of the
00:27:54
Shroud what we have accomplished I
00:27:59
believe is that we have demonstrated
00:28:01
that a miracle is not required to
00:28:04
produce the image on the Shroud of Turin
00:28:05
and it can be drawn on there in a simple
00:28:08
straightforward manner for half a
00:28:13
millennium the image on the Shroud of
00:28:15
Turin has challenged believers and
00:28:17
skeptics alike have its secrets finally
00:28:20
been revealed
00:28:24
Emily Craig and Randy Brizzy believeth
00:28:27
they have discovered how the Shroud was
00:28:29
created however not everyone in the art
00:28:32
world or the religious community is
00:28:33
convinced perhaps a mystery of the
00:28:36
Shroud will and should remain forever
00:28:39
unsolved the small community at Fernald
00:28:52
Ohio lies in the midst of farm country
00:28:55
20 miles from Cincinnati for many years
00:28:58
the town's main employer was this
00:29:00
factory the feed materials production
00:29:02
center also known as M L o the casual
00:29:08
observer would never guess that NL o was
00:29:10
in fact owned by the Department of
00:29:12
Energy from 1953 to 1989 it was one of
00:29:16
the few plants in the United States
00:29:18
which processed high grade uranium for
00:29:21
use in nuclear weapons when I was hired
00:29:25
in there they said that was a low-level
00:29:27
radiation plant and that you'd have
00:29:30
anything to worry about there was
00:29:32
nothing back here that would bother you
00:29:33
and just you know go on about your
00:29:36
business not to tell anybody what you
00:29:38
were doing and everything would be fine
00:29:43
however conditions in the factory or
00:29:45
anything but fine in the fall of 1984
00:29:49
NLO was rocked by a scandal of major
00:29:52
proportions when an accident allowed a
00:29:54
massive dose of radioactive smoke to
00:29:57
escape into the atmosphere
00:29:59
an investigation played a reveal that
00:30:02
over the years NLO had released more
00:30:04
than 200 tons of radioactive dust
00:30:06
particles into the air and local water
00:30:08
sources some said that nlogn was in
00:30:12
essence a third largest nuclear waste
00:30:15
dump in the country the effect that it
00:30:18
has on the environment is one thing we
00:30:24
have an environmental disaster but I
00:30:28
think if you did a survey around the
00:30:31
phenom community you will find very few
00:30:34
people who trust the government now for
00:30:39
the people of fernand the disastrous
00:30:41
accident followed on the heels of
00:30:43
another disturbing controversy involving
00:30:46
nlogn a few months earlier in June of
00:30:49
1984 an employee named Dave box had
00:30:52
disappeared while on the job though his
00:30:55
body was never found some of his
00:30:57
personal effects were and box was
00:31:00
presumed dead after the accident the
00:31:03
case of de box took on a sinister new
00:31:06
dimension
00:31:09
de box worked at NLO for three years and
00:31:12
all evidence indicates that he died a
00:31:14
horrible gruesome death inside the
00:31:16
factory the official ruling was that no
00:31:19
foul play was involved the
00:31:21
representatives from the Department of
00:31:22
Energy in the current Hamilton County
00:31:24
Sheriff's Administration have refused to
00:31:26
speak with us de box friends and family
00:31:29
are convinced that he was murdered and
00:31:31
they will not rest until they learn how
00:31:33
he died and who was responsible
00:31:38
David box grew up in Staten Island New
00:31:40
York in 1981 he was hired at NLO was a
00:31:44
pipe fitter and quickly earned the trust
00:31:46
and respect of his co-workers bux was a
00:31:50
father of two sons and a daughter
00:31:51
in 1979 he divorced yet he remained
00:31:55
devoted to his ex-wife and children he
00:31:59
was great he would do anything for us
00:32:01
kindness can be loved his children you
00:32:06
know did his job it was just very kind
00:32:09
of person Sunday June 18th 1984 began
00:32:15
like any other evening for date bucks he
00:32:18
worked the graveyard shift at nlogn at
00:32:21
11:00 p.m.
00:32:21
bucks met his rideshare partner Harry
00:32:24
easterly in a local restaurant parking
00:32:26
lot Dave got into my truck we left had a
00:32:31
little conversation on the way to work
00:32:32
he had talked about vacation with his
00:32:35
kids and bought a new lunchbox for work
00:32:38
and everything seemed to be normal day
00:32:44
box's primary responsibilities at NLO
00:32:47
were to inspect and maintain equipment
00:32:49
all of the plants throughout the factory
00:32:51
this included making sure that the
00:32:54
safety pumps and dust collectors used in
00:32:56
the Iranian processing were in proper
00:32:59
working order dave was a fairly quiet
00:33:03
guy but if you worked on a job and say
00:33:06
it was high radiation level Dave would
00:33:08
tell you say you know that particular
00:33:10
dust collector is fairly radioactive so
00:33:12
watch yourself for that pump has a
00:33:14
certain kind of acid in it so be careful
00:33:16
when you work on it but he would you
00:33:18
know try to help you out as much as you
00:33:20
could because
00:33:20
been there longer and I had only the
00:33:26
maintenance crew and security personnel
00:33:27
were on duty during the graveyard shift
00:33:30
the production lines were shut down at
00:33:33
midnight box reported to the maintenance
00:33:35
room for his work assignment yeah need
00:33:39
you to look at the pump build an eighth
00:33:40
which Bob herb knows which one see him
00:33:43
all right it was sort of just like any
00:33:45
other night he would open this toolbox
00:33:47
leave his keys in his lock and lay the
00:33:49
lock in the keys in the top of it Dave
00:33:53
went to one Aryan and I worked on a job
00:33:55
in another plant at around 4:00 a.m. box
00:34:00
and a supervisor was seen in a parked
00:34:02
pickup truck by an NLO employee the
00:34:06
witness spoke to unsolved mysteries on
00:34:08
the phone but declined to appear on
00:34:10
camera the witness said that box
00:34:13
appeared to be having a serious
00:34:14
discussion with a supervisor but he
00:34:16
could not determine what they were
00:34:18
talking about
00:34:19
oddly the windows of the truck rolled up
00:34:22
despite the fact that it was a hot humid
00:34:24
night an hour later at 5:00 a.m. the
00:34:29
same witness ran into a box on the
00:34:31
factory grounds let's put my tools away
00:34:36
[Music]
00:34:38
the witness was struck by the fact that
00:34:40
box is walking towards plant four not
00:34:42
plant eight where he had been assigned
00:34:44
it was the last time Dave box was seen
00:34:47
alive later that morning his friend and
00:34:50
fellow employee Harry easterly became
00:34:53
suspicious about Dave's absence
00:34:55
approximately seven o'clock that morning
00:34:56
we had a safety meeting in conference
00:35:00
room in plant four we showed up for the
00:35:03
meeting but Dave wasn't there walked
00:35:05
back over to the maintenance building
00:35:06
put my tools away
00:35:08
and notice that Dave's toolbox was still
00:35:10
open so I thought well he's probably
00:35:13
working overtime
00:35:14
[Music]
00:35:17
[Applause]
00:35:20
so when it made a few phone calls but I
00:35:23
couldn't locate him so I went back out
00:35:24
and told the security guard at the desk
00:35:27
that Dave hadn't come out I was going
00:35:29
home and I would meet him that the next
00:35:32
night at the restaurant
00:35:37
at around 7:30 that morning a furnace
00:35:40
operator in plant six notified his
00:35:42
supervisor that the casings in his oven
00:35:44
were covered with a strange sticky
00:35:46
residue they lack the worker also
00:35:49
detected an unusual odor that what's up
00:35:54
then something strange in here this
00:35:56
there's all kind of big firm crust all
00:36:00
over the salt crust
00:36:01
yeah I'm dipped a couple of ingots
00:36:03
saying they've got a slick film all over
00:36:05
that's okay just go ahead and keep Larry
00:36:08
yeah what this man won't be the one
00:36:12
starts a problem but there's something
00:36:13
in there kind of like a leg a leg
00:36:19
take a look
00:36:27
the supervisor apparently found nothing
00:36:30
wrong and told the furnace operator to
00:36:32
go back to work
00:36:36
at 11:00 that night Harry Eastern and
00:36:39
arrived at the restaurant to meet Dave
00:36:41
box as usual he had not heard about what
00:36:44
happened in plant six it was days turn
00:36:47
to drive and his car was already there
00:36:51
wasn't anything out of the ordinary
00:36:53
because he would pull his car in and go
00:36:55
get something to eat and then come back
00:36:56
to the car or get something to take for
00:36:58
lunch
00:37:03
and I leaned up against Dave's car and I
00:37:05
noticed the fender was still cold so I
00:37:07
reached over touched the hood and hood
00:37:10
was still cold Harry began to suspect
00:37:14
that something was wrong when he arrived
00:37:16
at the factory he reported date box
00:37:18
missing and had a security guard pry
00:37:21
open boxes Locker
00:37:22
are these the clothes he was wearing
00:37:23
that's what he was wearing and you
00:37:26
haven't seen him since you left No
00:37:28
[Music]
00:37:32
on Sunday night he was missing we were
00:37:37
informed of the fact on Tuesday on
00:37:40
Wednesday my mother tried to contact the
00:37:43
plant to find out more information they
00:37:47
told her they couldn't give her any
00:37:48
information they didn't know anything
00:37:50
and that was that
00:37:53
but inside the plant an investigation
00:37:56
was confirming the worst it was learned
00:37:59
that at 5:15 on the morning of day box's
00:38:01
disappearance the temperature in the
00:38:03
furnace and plant 6 which was kept at a
00:38:06
constant 1,300 degree temperature at
00:38:08
momentarily dipped 28 degrees suggesting
00:38:12
that something foreign had been dumped
00:38:14
into it
00:38:16
a worker it also found what appeared to
00:38:18
be a piece of bone on the lip of the
00:38:20
furnace the Hamilton County Sheriff's
00:38:22
Department was called in and the furnace
00:38:24
was shut down
00:38:30
investigators had to wait three days for
00:38:32
the molten liquid inside the furnace to
00:38:35
cool then employees sifted through the
00:38:37
waste material searching for some kind
00:38:40
of evidence
00:38:47
my god those keys belong to the victim's
00:38:51
car they also belong to three padlocks
00:38:55
of his and a one key
00:38:58
we believed went into his residence but
00:39:00
we couldn't prove that because was bent
00:39:02
and in I'm not very good shape
00:39:07
the conclusion was inescapable de box
00:39:11
was almost certainly dead but the news
00:39:14
left Harry Easterling dumbfounded
00:39:16
he claims that Dave's keys were still in
00:39:19
his toolbox at 7:30 a.m. more than two
00:39:22
hours after the gage in plant six
00:39:24
registered the temperature crop
00:39:27
when I left the plant to go over to the
00:39:31
maintenance shop his keys were in the
00:39:33
box
00:39:33
when I left there to go home they were
00:39:34
still in the box I went home when I came
00:39:37
back that night his keys were still in
00:39:40
the top of his toolbox the supervisor
00:39:42
closed his box put the lock on his
00:39:45
toolbox and took his keys out of the
00:39:47
lock and from there on I do not know
00:39:50
what happened to the keys in addition to
00:39:54
the keys investigators uncovered a steel
00:39:57
toad from a boot part of what they
00:39:59
thought was an eyeglass frame fragments
00:40:02
of what they believed was date boxes
00:40:04
walkie talkie and a piece of stainless
00:40:07
steel wire that was looped together in
00:40:09
three oddly connecting circles also
00:40:12
recovered were several pieces of human
00:40:15
bone the official police investigation
00:40:20
was unable to determine conclusively how
00:40:23
de box died however suicide was a
00:40:26
distinct possibility box had a history
00:40:29
of psychological problems that around
00:40:31
the time of his divorce he had
00:40:32
apparently tried to take his own life I
00:40:37
know my father did not commit suicide
00:40:40
there was no reason for him to commit
00:40:42
suicide he had purchased groceries for
00:40:46
the week he was planning a vacation with
00:40:50
me and my younger brother for the
00:40:51
following summer to Florida he paid all
00:40:55
of his bills for the month there was no
00:40:58
reason for him to commit suicide from
00:41:01
what everything I know about the
00:41:03
circumstances of what occurred back then
00:41:05
I would have to say that he was probably
00:41:07
lowered into the furnace that he was
00:41:08
probably murdered I can't think of any
00:41:11
other way that it could have happened I
00:41:12
don't believe that it could have been
00:41:15
suicide or that I could have in an
00:41:18
accident
00:41:22
on the night the day brock Stein he had
00:41:25
been working in plant a plant and had
00:41:28
released four times one radioactive
00:41:30
contaminants into the environment than
00:41:33
any other plant at the plant site why he
00:41:37
was killed
00:41:38
I think he knew something and I think
00:41:41
they had to deal with plant eight I
00:41:44
think they had to deal with their
00:41:46
releases the threat to the public
00:41:49
alchemy environment and it's possible he
00:41:54
was a whistleblower or was going to be a
00:41:55
whistleblower
00:41:56
[Music]
00:42:00
I believe that they could have been a
00:42:06
shining or they kind of hit him with
00:42:08
something dr. moon conscious
00:42:11
took the body back to plant sex with
00:42:14
eternal says
00:42:17
question I have is whether or not Dave
00:42:20
box was alive at the time that they
00:42:23
threw him into that cornice I would hate
00:42:26
to think that he was conscious I can't
00:42:29
imagine a more horrible death than that

00:42:49
we never developed any information
00:42:52
indicating foul play we had that in the
00:42:56
back of our minds but no one ever gave
00:42:59
us any indication or reason to believe
00:43:02
that foul play may have occurred there
00:43:07
are probably people out there that know
00:43:09
what happened and there may not be
00:43:11
people that know what happened either
00:43:12
because you know if they knew I doubt
00:43:16
that anybody would tell you you know
00:43:19
fear maybe fear of their life
00:43:20
I still have days where I can't believe
00:43:28
he's gone I am very angry I mean we
00:43:32
loved him he loved us and there was no
00:43:35
reason for this to happen
00:43:37
we just want somebody to please come
00:43:40
forward and tell us any information
00:43:41
anything at all
00:43:44
there's a final bitter footnote to the
00:43:47
death of Dave box
00:43:48
nine years after the fact his family is
00:43:51
still waiting to lay him to rest in 1989
00:43:55
an Ella was shut down and boxes remains
00:43:58
a few bone fragments are presently in a
00:44:01
sealed drum on the clothes plant site
00:44:03
too toxic to be buried in the ground
