As the investigation unfolds, surveillance footage reveals troubling details about Aramaz Sr.'s actions, including a trip to Disneyland with Peaky and subsequent suspicious behavior. The episode examines the timeline of events, including Aramaz Sr.'s erratic behavior in Las Vegas after Peaky's disappearance.

Ultimately, Aramaz Sr. confesses to the murder of his son, leading to the discovery of Peaky's body. The episode concludes with a discussion of the impact of surveillance cameras in solving the case and the emotional toll on those involved.

The episode also touches on another case involving Colin Reeves, who murdered his neighbors, Stephen and Jennifer Chapel, after a dispute. The episode highlights the role of doorbell cameras in capturing the events leading to the tragic incident.

Anna had wanted a child all along she

baking in particular he was such a happy
00:02:12
child had a great childhood love to
00:02:15
learn
00:02:16
and if you know Anna you know that Anna
00:02:18
was a principal at an elementary school
00:02:21
so education is a big part of her life
00:02:25
and she wanted to instill that in picky
00:02:27
as well
00:02:28
eight years of marriage things turned
00:02:32
sour and Anna filed for divorce
00:02:36
Louis Aguilera is a homicide detective
00:02:39
for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's
00:02:41
Department
00:02:42
we learned that the divorce proceedings
00:02:45
were quite contentious that both parties
00:02:47
were making allegations against each
00:02:49
other
00:02:50
and it was a smear campaign basically on
00:02:54
both sides
00:02:56
peaky's parents Anna and aramaz became
00:02:59
embroiled in a bitter custody battle
00:03:02
Anna was concerned about how RMS senior
00:03:05
treated piki she claimed he was
00:03:07
aggressive and yelled in their son's
00:03:10
face
00:03:11
despite these allegations the court
00:03:14
ordered joint custody and granted each
00:03:17
parent seven consecutive days with their
00:03:19
child on the condition that they handed
00:03:22
piki over on neutral turf
00:03:25
so the initial order for visitation
00:03:28
allowed peaky's father to take him for
00:03:30
an entire week and so Anna dropped off
00:03:34
peaky at the police station made sure
00:03:37
that his father took custody of him
00:03:40
RMS senior was planning to take piki to
00:03:43
Disneyland
00:03:45
so this video was given to us by Anna
00:03:48
and this was taken from her cell phone
00:03:50
that she mounted on her dashboard to
00:03:53
document the custody Exchange
00:03:57
Anna was so concerned about piki's
00:04:00
Father's behavior that she decided to
00:04:02
record all of their exchanges on camera
00:04:07
what's unusual to us is you see when
00:04:10
she's
00:04:11
hugging peaky and saying her goodbyes to
00:04:13
him
00:04:14
ARA's pacing in the background
00:04:17
seems fidgety and nervous and just weird
00:04:20
the way he's acting
00:04:22
and you see the affection they have for
00:04:24
each other and then look at him in the
00:04:26
background
00:04:27
at this point peaky's whispering in her
00:04:30
ear and talking to her he gives her a
00:04:32
kiss you'll see him caress her hair he
00:04:34
whispered to her I don't want to go with
00:04:35
him I want to stay with you
00:04:40
Kiki's body language with his father is
00:04:43
in complete contrast
00:04:45
his body and legs arching away
00:04:48
seven days later on Saturday the 22nd of
00:04:52
April 2017. aramas senior and piki
00:04:55
failed to turn up at the pre-arranged
00:04:58
drop-off point in San Marino
00:05:03
Anna is in San Marino waiting for ARA to
00:05:07
return peaky she finally contacts San
00:05:11
Marino police department at 10 A.M and
00:05:13
says hey
00:05:14
my son was supposed to be here a couple
00:05:17
of hours ago and my ex-husband is an
00:05:20
answer in his phone
00:05:21
he's not returning text messages
00:05:24
he's a couple hours late and he's
00:05:26
violating the order
00:05:30
here's his license plate they research
00:05:33
it on their computer and they see that
00:05:35
his car had been towed
00:05:37
by South Pasadena Police earlier that
00:05:39
morning
00:05:41
Craig hum is head of the major crimes
00:05:44
division in the LA County District
00:05:46
Attorney's office
00:05:48
well the peaky Anderson case first came
00:05:50
to my desk a couple of days after
00:05:53
piggy disappeared so we were involved
00:05:56
pretty much from the beginning peaky's
00:05:58
dad aramas senior had been found on the
00:06:00
morning of Saturday the 22nd of April
00:06:04
he was lying on the ground
00:06:06
unconscious in Arroyo Seco Park
00:06:09
his father was found in a disheveled
00:06:12
condition he claimed he didn't know what
00:06:14
happened to piki
00:06:17
the jogger happened to see him at 6 30
00:06:19
in the morning and she called the police
00:06:23
so when South Pasadena police officers
00:06:25
arrived that morning they found him
00:06:27
passed out
00:06:29
you see ARA's car Aura was about 30 feet
00:06:33
behind the car
00:06:35
on a horse trail so they transport them
00:06:37
to the hospital not thinking anything of
00:06:41
a missing child
00:06:42
they talked to them further in the
00:06:44
hospital and he does say that I think I
00:06:47
was assaulted
00:06:48
I'm going through a divorce
00:06:51
and I think my ex-wife might have had
00:06:53
something to do with it
00:06:55
that's all he says he makes no mention
00:06:57
of his child at all
00:07:00
so South Pasadena Police just tow his
00:07:03
car they leave him at the hospital not
00:07:06
thinking anything of it
00:07:09
Kiki's father claimed that he didn't
00:07:11
know what had happened to peaky and so
00:07:13
the police treated it as perhaps some
00:07:15
kind of abduction or that perhaps peaky
00:07:17
had just wandered away when his father
00:07:20
was unconscious and so initially they
00:07:22
treated it as potentially a missing
00:07:24
person's case
00:07:27
when you have a missing person case the
00:07:29
first thing you want to do is contact
00:07:30
the relatives of that missing person to
00:07:32
get the Dynamics of the family
00:07:34
relationship so we did a background
00:07:36
investigation on the father right away
00:07:38
he had never been arrested
00:07:41
he had a bachelor's degree from one of
00:07:44
the local universities
00:07:45
he had never even been cited for a
00:07:47
moving violation or a park in violation
00:07:49
so he had a clear record reading into
00:07:51
his background it didn't lead me to any
00:07:54
clues didn't make me think any different
00:07:56
other than his child's missing
00:08:03
children cases are resolved very quickly
00:08:05
and children also when they go missing
00:08:08
usually run away from home and either
00:08:09
they come back or they're found it's
00:08:11
usually an innocent situation that
00:08:13
people get very worried about very
00:08:15
quickly understandably and the police
00:08:16
take very seriously but of course in
00:08:19
this case there was this other factor
00:08:21
which was the father and the lack of
00:08:23
trust in the father and worry about what
00:08:25
he might do with the child
00:08:26
foreign
00:08:35
based on the fact that he had custody of
00:08:38
his child
00:08:39
he didn't know the whereabouts of his
00:08:40
child South Pasadena arrested him for
00:08:43
child endangerment he was deemed to be
00:08:46
under the influence of drugs opioids
00:08:50
and they arrested him for that as well
00:08:55
after his arrest police questioned
00:08:58
piki's father
00:09:00
our main goal more than anything in here
00:09:03
is to find yourself
00:09:04
and if you can give us any information
00:09:06
to help us find him that's what we're
00:09:09
trying to do
00:09:11
he's stuck to the story I think I was
00:09:13
assaulted I'm having this horrible
00:09:16
divorce with my ex-wife
00:09:18
she might have had something to do with
00:09:20
it
00:09:22
I wanted to
00:09:24
find from the beginning I was wanted
00:09:26
always so
00:09:28
you know it's been tough you know
00:09:29
because you know
00:09:31
I all I just want is what is in the best
00:09:34
interest of our 50 50. and that's why
00:09:37
and and it's like
00:09:39
more and more it's just a continuous
00:09:42
battle
00:09:43
he continued to tell that story all
00:09:45
morning
00:09:46
but RMS still couldn't tell the police
00:09:49
where piki was
00:09:52
no one knows what you're selling
00:09:53
something did you give him to somebody
00:09:55
else
00:09:58
RMS seniors physical appearance also
00:10:02
raised suspicion
00:10:04
I noticed on his hands he had abrasions
00:10:06
on the palms of his hands
00:10:09
[Music]
00:10:11
no any
00:10:13
you don't remember
00:10:16
you don't remember digging around
00:10:17
outside and it's not dirt you don't
00:10:19
remember
00:10:20
did you have car problems or anything I
00:10:23
I did not is that grease or you don't
00:10:25
know it's not Greece I mean if I I would
00:10:27
love it if you guys take a sample so you
00:10:31
don't remember
00:10:32
no
00:10:36
[Music]
00:10:39
we had his hands photographed as well
00:10:42
and in the bedding of his fingernails
00:10:44
they were covered with dirt and the
00:10:46
photos were quite significant because of
00:10:48
the abrasions that he had
00:10:50
on the palms of his hands
00:10:53
and some blistering as well
00:10:56
the contents of aramaza's recovered car
00:10:59
began to paint a worrying picture
00:11:04
there was a sonogram of piki that was
00:11:07
propped up on the dashboard there was
00:11:09
also a full gas can and the car had been
00:11:13
doused in gasoline on the inside and a
00:11:16
rag was stuck in the gas cap
00:11:20
it looked like it was an apparent
00:11:23
attempt to light the car on fire
00:11:28
the LED lantern that stood out to me
00:11:31
that was still lit
00:11:33
there's the sippy cup that we took as
00:11:35
evidence and the jacket that had vomit
00:11:37
on it as well
00:11:41
the police questioned aramas again to
00:11:44
establish a timeline of events
00:11:47
from the moment he picked up piki to
00:11:49
seven days later when he was found lying
00:11:52
in Arroyo Seco Park
00:11:55
we wanted to get a statement from him
00:11:58
and lock him into a story
00:12:02
okay what did you do this past Thursday
00:12:04
we went to Disneyland I sent
00:12:07
investigators out to follow up on that
00:12:10
timeline but before we did that we made
00:12:14
the decision to release him from custody
00:12:16
we didn't feel like a child endangerment
00:12:18
case was strong and he was more viable
00:12:21
to us to be out of custody and maybe
00:12:25
help us
00:12:26
with this investigation
00:12:29
and locating this child
00:12:31
plus we wanted to keep eyes on them
00:12:37
the police tracked aramas's every move
00:12:40
and started to compare his testimony
00:12:42
with the recordings
00:12:46
cameras in and video evidence were
00:12:48
critical in this case they set a
00:12:50
timeline for us
00:12:53
the first video was from Anna's dash cam
00:12:55
on Saturday the 15th of April 2017.
00:12:59
five days later aramaus was captured on
00:13:02
his own home surveillance camera
00:13:08
served a search warrant at ARA's house
00:13:12
and we located video from the house of
00:13:15
him leaving on Thursday afternoon prior
00:13:17
to going to Disneyland
00:13:18
we saw that he walked out of his house
00:13:21
to his car with the large Blue duffel
00:13:24
bag
00:13:25
and he also had a large gas container in
00:13:27
his hand
00:13:29
neither one of those items have ever
00:13:31
been recovered to this day
00:13:33
we conducted DNA tests of the bathrooms
00:13:37
and didn't locate any evidence of any
00:13:40
crime in the house but we did take a
00:13:43
hard drive we discovered that the week
00:13:46
he had his son he created a will online
00:13:48
and in that will he left everything to
00:13:52
his mother and he left everything to his
00:13:54
sister including a hundred thousand
00:13:56
dollars in cash he left nothing to his
00:13:59
son
00:14:01
which told us a lot
00:14:03
the next time peaky and his father were
00:14:06
filmed was at Disneyland
00:14:11
taken from the entrance at Disneyland
00:14:14
and you can see ARA picky up and carry
00:14:17
him through the turnstiles and we found
00:14:20
a video from Disneyland that we were
00:14:22
able to locate
00:14:24
he was seen leaving Disneyland
00:14:27
at about 1am
00:14:30
ARA our next scene at an Arco Am Pm gas
00:14:34
station in Monterey Park
00:14:37
and that's about two o'clock in the
00:14:39
morning on Friday
00:14:46
six hours later aramaz appeared on a
00:14:49
camera over 120 miles away at Lake
00:14:53
kachuma an artificial Reservoir in Santa
00:14:55
Barbara County
00:14:58
there's a booth at the entrance where
00:15:01
people pay to get into the parking lot
00:15:03
that was extremely useful because from
00:15:06
that video we could tell that peaky
00:15:09
wasn't in the car
00:15:12
there's a child seat in the back of the
00:15:14
car and that would be where piki would
00:15:17
normally be seated and the car seat was
00:15:19
empty
00:15:20
the fact that peaky couldn't be seen in
00:15:23
the car told us that something had
00:15:25
happened to peaky between the time that
00:15:27
he had left Disneyland with his father
00:15:30
and the time that biki's father arrived
00:15:32
at Lake kachuma
00:15:39
Lake Cachuma puma and made several
00:15:41
visits to the local store which were
00:15:43
caught on camera
00:15:47
so in this first
00:15:49
still photo you see Aura arriving into
00:15:52
the convenience store you buy some items
00:15:55
and which was a concern to us was that
00:15:58
there was no peaky
00:16:00
you see him leaving with no peeking
00:16:04
and then he enters the store a second
00:16:06
time buys more miscellaneous items
00:16:09
and there's no peaky again
00:16:12
police checked every piece of video
00:16:15
footage against aramaz's testimony what
00:16:18
they found was strong enough to Warrant
00:16:21
a search teams on Horseback with
00:16:23
tracking dogs combed 30 square miles
00:16:26
around Lake Cachuma
00:16:30
helicopters examined the area from above
00:16:33
divers went into the water but there was
00:16:36
no trace of peaky meanwhile 400 miles
00:16:40
away in Las Vegas aramas senior was
00:16:43
becoming a cause for concern his father
00:16:46
refused to cooperate with the police any
00:16:49
further refused to talk with them
00:16:50
refused to tell them anything at all so
00:16:52
the police put Piggy's father under a
00:16:54
physical surveillance and they also
00:16:57
worked with us to obtain a wiretap so
00:16:59
that we could monitor any phone calls
00:17:02
that piki's father was making to see if
00:17:04
we could get any information from that
00:17:06
from the physical surveillance of
00:17:08
Piggy's father from the phone calls it
00:17:10
was clear that he had no interest in
00:17:13
looking for his son there was no even
00:17:16
attempt to appear concerned about his
00:17:19
his son's well-being and that was in
00:17:21
direct contrast with piki's Mother Anna
00:17:24
who was still frantically trying to find
00:17:26
her son still going to the media asking
00:17:29
for anybody's help in in finding her son
00:17:33
over the couple months that peaky was
00:17:36
missing Aura not at one point called us
00:17:38
asked us how our investigation was going
00:17:41
on he never took part in the searches
00:17:43
for peaky
00:17:45
he never questioned anything never spoke
00:17:48
with Anna
00:17:50
Bridge obtained during the investigation
00:17:52
showed arama's acting erratically
00:17:55
ARA was in Las Vegas going from casino
00:17:59
to casino hotel to hotel having a good
00:18:02
time he was using a lot of Narcotics
00:18:06
he was meeting women in hotels
00:18:10
he was skydiving
00:18:12
welcome to skydive Las Vegas how you
00:18:15
doing awesome awesome obviously you're
00:18:17
feeling extra stupid today
00:18:19
so I have to throw you out of a plate
00:18:21
because of that
00:18:23
prior to him jumping out of the plane
00:18:25
[Music]
00:18:26
he mentions I love you buddy
00:18:32
I love you buddy that's what he referred
00:18:35
to peakyas
00:18:38
let's do it
00:18:41
and he jumps out of the plane
00:18:51
so he's off having a good time
00:18:54
not a care in the world
00:19:01
his behavior just became more and more
00:19:04
inconsistent with that of a grieving
00:19:06
father and it almost seemed like this
00:19:09
was kind of his last hurray because he
00:19:13
knew that at some point in time this was
00:19:15
all going to catch up with him foreign
00:19:30
going to Vegas and gambling and
00:19:33
skydiving and engaging in just a series
00:19:35
of high-risk behaviors is not a normal
00:19:38
reaction to your child going missing it
00:19:40
is however a normal reaction to having
00:19:43
Nothing Left to Lose
00:19:47
before
00:19:48
and as time went on aramaza's Behavior
00:19:52
became even more bizarre ARA is now
00:19:56
changing his appearance and he's
00:19:58
starting to mention to friends
00:20:02
that he might leave the country and he's
00:20:04
starting to research countries that
00:20:07
don't extradite and that became a
00:20:10
concern to us because now we're thinking
00:20:13
he's going to flee and we'll never see
00:20:14
him again
00:20:16
police couldn't risk aramas slipping
00:20:19
their net he was arrested on a no body
00:20:22
murder charge and taken back to LA
00:20:24
County
00:20:25
detectives couldn't have predicted what
00:20:28
happened next
00:20:36
[Music]
00:20:51
door
00:20:53
struggle
00:21:00
and
00:21:02
[Music]
00:21:04
I guess I'm struggling
00:21:07
and she would touch your brain what she
00:21:10
said
00:21:22
and then he said he
00:21:24
took his son
00:21:26
down the hillside
00:21:28
and that's why you haven't where he
00:21:30
slipped and fell
00:21:31
that's why you have his nails covered in
00:21:34
dirt
00:21:36
and he said he sat his son along the
00:21:39
side of tree didn't bury him
00:21:43
[Music]
00:21:49
so to him it was more Honorable in his
00:21:52
head
00:21:53
that he didn't bury his son and he Place
00:21:55
him up against a tree
00:21:58
the fact that he gave so much detail
00:22:01
about what he did during the commission
00:22:04
of this crime to me just shows that it
00:22:07
was almost certainly what sometimes
00:22:08
called like a flash ball memory so he
00:22:12
probably has thought repeatedly about
00:22:14
this incident it's basically traumatized
00:22:17
him whether he was doing this out of
00:22:19
catharsis so to feel better or to make
00:22:22
sure that the police have the whole
00:22:23
story this was a highly stressful highly
00:22:25
emotional event that was strongly
00:22:27
preserved in his memory and he is now
00:22:29
getting it out of his mind
00:22:36
on the 30th of June 2017
00:22:39
71 days after piki was reported missing
00:22:43
police officers finally found peaky's
00:22:46
body
00:22:47
based on the description that piki's
00:22:50
father gave to the police they were able
00:22:52
to find the location and they were able
00:22:55
to locate piku's body which was not that
00:22:59
far off of the parking lot area propped
00:23:01
against a tree just like his father had
00:23:03
said and piki's body was dressed in the
00:23:06
pajamas that his father had described at
00:23:10
the time that he confessed
00:23:12
what we wanted to do was bring that
00:23:15
child some dignity
00:23:16
that his father didn't
00:23:19
and we placed him in a helicopter
00:23:21
with one of our detectives and flew him
00:23:24
back to LA with that Detective
00:23:27
RMS andressian senior was charged with
00:23:31
first degree murder
00:23:33
initially he maintained his innocence
00:23:35
but he changed his mind and decided to
00:23:38
plead guilty in court on the 1st of
00:23:40
August 2017.
00:23:42
at this time
00:23:45
[Music]
00:23:50
for the rest of your life
00:23:54
just explain to you sir
00:23:57
he pled guilty because he didn't want to
00:24:00
go through Court proceedings
00:24:02
that were going to show what a bad
00:24:04
person he was
00:24:05
he made it seem as though he pled guilty
00:24:07
to help Anna to help the rest of the
00:24:10
family
00:24:12
but in his narcissistic way he knew
00:24:15
everything he had done
00:24:18
after murdering that child including all
00:24:20
his Vegas trips and the partying and the
00:24:22
drugs and the women were going to come
00:24:24
out in court
00:24:25
and he didn't want any part of that
00:24:28
are you feeling that the freely and
00:24:30
voluntarily and because that is what you
00:24:31
want to do listen Okay quite
00:24:34
exceptionally I find you guilty based on
00:24:35
your plea
00:24:37
detectives believe aramaza's motive was
00:24:40
to hurt his ex-wife
00:24:41
murdering their child as an ultimate Act
00:24:45
of Revenge
00:24:50
taking piki to Dunn is a really
00:24:52
interesting facet of this case because
00:24:54
it goes against the idea that he's
00:24:57
dehumanizing his child because it sounds
00:24:59
like he might be trying to give his
00:25:01
child the best last days of his life in
00:25:03
which case he's entirely seeing him as a
00:25:05
child he actually is
00:25:07
and yet he's then making the decision to
00:25:09
then end his life so there's this
00:25:11
Discord going on between wanting the
00:25:13
child to be happy and live a fulfilled
00:25:15
life but then also taking that life away
00:25:16
entirely in some way Disneyland is like
00:25:19
a Vegas for children and it's having
00:25:21
that Reckless fun Euphoria before death
00:25:27
that maybe he was trying to offer his
00:25:28
son
00:25:29
that he perhaps was also trying to do to
00:25:32
himself
00:25:33
oh
00:25:35
[Music]
00:25:37
I think he did it because he wanted to
00:25:40
hurt Anna
00:25:41
and he knew the only way to hurt Anna
00:25:43
was to take away the most important
00:25:45
thing in her life
00:25:47
and that was peaky
00:25:50
this is the last time she's going to see
00:25:52
him
00:25:53
it's the last time she's going to be
00:25:54
able to touch him
00:25:58
peaky meant the world to her
00:26:01
and he still does
00:26:03
and he knew this
00:26:05
and that was the ultimate pain he could
00:26:07
cause was killing their child
00:26:11
despite the successful prosecution there
00:26:14
are still many unanswered questions
00:26:16
around aramaz's Behavior
00:26:19
did he mean to set that car on fire
00:26:22
using that rag that was sticking out of
00:26:24
the gas cap as an ignition point
00:26:28
since the entire car was doused in
00:26:30
gasoline did he want to commit suicide
00:26:37
without the cameras aramas may never
00:26:40
have been held accountable for piki's
00:26:42
murder
00:26:44
cameras are one of the most important
00:26:47
things to a homicide detective
00:26:50
that exists they set a timeline for when
00:26:54
the last time that peaky was seen alive
00:26:55
which was the video from when he left
00:26:58
Disneyland at about one o'clock in the
00:27:00
morning later on that morning at around
00:27:02
eight or nine o'clock in the morning PK
00:27:04
was no longer with his father in the car
00:27:06
so it gave us a window of when piki was
00:27:10
killed it also gave us an indication of
00:27:13
where the crime actually occurred
00:27:16
foreign
00:27:18
was comprehensively caught on camera
00:27:23
he was given a sentence of 25 years to
00:27:26
life in prison
00:27:29
it really sticks with you on the death
00:27:31
of children and then the fact that a
00:27:33
child is murdered by their parent is
00:27:35
just something that never goes away and
00:27:37
it it never ceases to amaze me what what
00:27:42
people will do to their own children
00:27:44
I've had over 350
00:27:47
homicide cases
00:27:50
and this is the only funeral I've ever
00:27:52
attended
00:27:54
it was uh really somber I'll never
00:27:57
forget it
00:28:09
surveillance cameras were crucial in
00:28:12
solving the piki andressian case
00:28:14
all around the world CCTV has become
00:28:17
almost omnipresent
00:28:20
home surveillance and doorbell cameras
00:28:23
in particular have become a global
00:28:25
billion dollar industry
00:28:31
the UK the covet pandemic and the
00:28:34
increase in home deliveries created a
00:28:36
huge demand for doorbell cameras
00:28:40
the doorbell cameras for home security
00:28:42
for that specific address for a property
00:28:46
owner to be able to see who was
00:28:47
approaching their frontal rear of their
00:28:49
property
00:28:51
you could see if somebody was delivering
00:28:54
Parcels for example
00:28:59
evidence for the police
00:29:02
in the murder of Stephen and Jennifer
00:29:04
Chapel
00:29:06
the investigation team will actively
00:29:08
seek if there are any doorbell cameras
00:29:10
within the area that may have you know
00:29:12
captured the incidents itself or the
00:29:14
offenders movements
00:29:17
in the southwest of England in the
00:29:20
county of Somerset lies the small
00:29:22
village of Norton fitzwarren home to
00:29:26
just over 3 000 people including married
00:29:29
couple Stephen and Jennifer Chapel
00:29:33
Jennifer and Steven lived in a small
00:29:36
housing estate where everyone knew each
00:29:38
other Jennifer Chapel worked in the
00:29:41
local Garden Center Cafe and her husband
00:29:44
Stephen was a teacher they were very
00:29:47
much in love and they had two young
00:29:50
children and they were friendly
00:29:53
approachable people that were they were
00:29:56
liked by almost everyone
00:29:59
Stephen and Jennifer lived next door to
00:30:02
Colin and Kaylee Reeves
00:30:04
the Raves family and the Chapels were
00:30:07
friends I during lockdown they texted
00:30:10
each other checking in on each other
00:30:12
making sure everyone was okay I believe
00:30:15
that Mrs chapel and Mrs Reeves shared
00:30:18
the school van because they had children
00:30:20
of a similar age and then it all sort of
00:30:23
changed
00:30:25
tensions escalated between the two
00:30:28
families over the parking spaces
00:30:30
directly outside their homes
00:30:33
this minor annoyance was growing into a
00:30:37
daily obsession
00:30:39
Mrs Chapel had bought a second car and
00:30:42
she used to park it on the road at the
00:30:44
bottom of the Reeves's parking space and
00:30:48
this didn't exactly obstruct at the
00:30:51
Raves as parking space but it made it
00:30:52
more difficult for Colin Reeves to
00:30:55
reverse in and out of his space
00:30:58
Colin Reeves confronted Jennifer the
00:31:01
exchange was captured on her doorbell
00:31:03
camera
00:31:03
here
00:31:11
Emmy Polito is a forensic video analyst
00:31:14
and an expert witness in criminal cases
00:31:16
in the UK
00:31:18
the sound in this clip is particularly
00:31:20
important
00:31:22
the actual camera has got a microphone
00:31:24
as well that will switch on and off
00:31:26
depending on how loud the conversation
00:31:28
is
00:31:34
spotlight
00:31:36
okay
00:31:40
when a Colin is close to the camera we
00:31:43
can clearly hear what he's saying to
00:31:45
Jennifer this vehicle we're seeing here
00:31:47
belongs to Jennifer this is the vehicle
00:31:49
that is that is causing upset to him
00:31:52
[Music]
00:31:58
well
00:32:03
but the situation intensified
00:32:08
Steven chapwell Jennifer's husband was
00:32:11
maneuvering out of his parking space and
00:32:14
he accidentally bumped Colin Reeves's
00:32:16
car so that kind of changed the
00:32:19
relationship a bit after that they
00:32:21
weren't quite as friendly
00:32:24
the relationship deteriorated further
00:32:26
over arguments about the Chapel's cat
00:32:29
and other Petty disagreements
00:32:33
there was then quite a tense exchange of
00:32:36
swear words between Colin Reeves and Mrs
00:32:38
Chapel
00:32:42
he's the one who started
00:32:45
we can identify Jennifer here and we
00:32:49
know from recognizing the voice and from
00:32:51
previous recordings that that's Colin
00:32:59
for the police this is essential because
00:33:01
it kind of proves that the relationship
00:33:03
between them is deteriorating rapidly
00:33:05
and is therefore at this point where
00:33:08
potentially something violent and
00:33:10
Sinister could start working in Collins
00:33:12
head
00:33:15
we can all relate to being in a dispute
00:33:18
with a neighbor because whether it's
00:33:20
noise or someone parking in your spot or
00:33:22
the person next door gardening too often
00:33:24
these are invasions of your sense of
00:33:28
space and your sense of Sanity sometimes
00:33:31
and I think that compounding of even
00:33:33
trivial tiny things over and over and
00:33:36
over and over again is like pushing into
00:33:38
a wound and at some point it can feel
00:33:40
like the only way to deal with it is to
00:33:44
take dramatic action
00:33:49
the tensions extended beyond the front
00:33:52
door
00:33:54
Colin Raves had gone to the garden
00:33:57
center with Mrs Chapel worked and she
00:34:00
said that he was serenade apparently he
00:34:02
went there twice
00:34:04
Jennifer Chapel definitely felt
00:34:06
intimidated by his presence and
00:34:09
definitely felt like he had gone there
00:34:11
to scare her or to make her feel uneasy
00:34:17
Colin Reeves was an Army veteran
00:34:20
it was part of the royal engineers and
00:34:23
in 2008 then he went to Afghanistan
00:34:26
where he was stationed at Camp Bastion
00:34:28
in his role with the Royal engineers and
00:34:32
also on the prisoner of war of camp
00:34:35
when Colin returned from Duty his
00:34:38
experience of War had an impact on him
00:34:40
it affected his work and his
00:34:43
relationship he was a different Colin he
00:34:46
had completely changed he was withdrawn
00:34:49
relations between Colin and Kelly
00:34:51
started to break down Colin Reeves did
00:34:54
turned a drink and when he was drunk he
00:34:57
was abusive to his wife clearly
00:35:01
Collins experiences in the Army had also
00:35:03
led him to develop a fear of camera
00:35:06
surveillance which affected his civilian
00:35:08
job as a truck driver
00:35:12
he felt like he was always on camera
00:35:14
because there were cameras watching him
00:35:16
in the Lorry and he became more and more
00:35:18
depressed and withdrawn
00:35:21
on the 21st of November 2020 Colin went
00:35:24
to Taunton with his mother and children
00:35:26
to see the Christmas lights being
00:35:28
switched on
00:35:31
I live with areas surrounded by crides
00:35:34
and his mum said that she could see he
00:35:36
felt very uneasy being in such a crowded
00:35:39
place after lockdown he also saw the War
00:35:41
Memorial in Taunton and Colin Reeves
00:35:44
said that this reminded him of
00:35:46
Remembrance Day which was always a
00:35:48
difficult time for him
00:35:51
when Colin got home he put the kids to
00:35:53
bed it had already been a tough day then
00:35:57
his wife Kaylee asked for a trial
00:36:00
separation
00:36:01
following math then Colin went and sat
00:36:03
on the stairs and he said he cried
00:36:09
just 40 minutes later a man was captured
00:36:12
on Stephen and Jennifer Chapel's Garden
00:36:14
camera
00:36:16
we can see an individual crutching down
00:36:21
the suspect was trying absolutely
00:36:24
everything not to be detected by the
00:36:27
Light
00:36:29
because the footage is an infrared and
00:36:31
because of the angle of you we can't
00:36:33
identify this person at this stage
00:36:37
but what we can see
00:36:40
it's some black tonalities on the right
00:36:43
forearm which might indicate a tattoo
00:36:48
but it's got a linear form which is
00:36:50
extending from the hand potentially
00:36:53
could be a weapon
00:36:56
this tiny detail uncovered in the
00:36:58
footage was about to become hugely
00:37:01
significant
00:37:04
one of the Chapel's neighbors watching
00:37:06
TV with his partner when he heard
00:37:08
screaming coming from next door and he
00:37:11
heard
00:37:12
a man shouting die die
00:37:17
we can see the cat
00:37:20
running away from the scene
00:37:23
could indicate that there's something
00:37:24
inside the property that the cat is
00:37:27
obviously scared about
00:37:29
a similar figure leaves the house with
00:37:32
completely different body language
00:37:35
the suspect is not crouching or sneaking
00:37:38
anymore potentially this could indicate
00:37:40
that he has got no more people to worry
00:37:43
about hearing him or seeing him
00:37:47
moments later a 999 call is made
00:37:54
to the police what's the location of
00:37:56
your emergency
00:38:01
husband and the mother
00:38:04
oh okay and you're safe at the moment
00:38:07
yes right have you got any injuries
00:38:09
whereabouts have you been stabbed
00:38:11
no not me the neighbors the neighbors
00:38:13
been stabbed by who
00:38:15
hi mate by you yes right okay what's
00:38:20
your name Colin Reeves all right call
00:38:23
them tell me exactly what's happened
00:38:24
take a deep breath
00:38:27
we have a first admission of guilds from
00:38:30
the caller
00:38:31
the emergency calls are very important
00:38:33
pieces of evidence the operator is not
00:38:36
only providing a support and help but is
00:38:39
also Gathering uh information about what
00:38:41
has happened which is being recorded
00:38:44
I went out yeah with a knife okay
00:38:51
um
00:38:52
I've stabbed both of them all right how
00:38:54
many times
00:38:58
I don't know a couple times each not
00:39:02
two or three times each maybe
00:39:04
are they still conscious and breathing I
00:39:08
don't think so no okay pollen signed a
00:39:11
pretty weapon for a man who just stabbed
00:39:13
his neighbors he was able to answer all
00:39:16
the questions asked of him by the call
00:39:18
Handler all right what kind of knife did
00:39:21
you use
00:39:23
favorite soccer okay
00:39:31
the famous voice that we heard in the
00:39:33
background is the caller's wife
00:39:35
all right Colin just down the line to
00:39:37
meet you okay we're gonna get some help
00:39:38
out there
00:39:40
so you stabbed them both several times
00:39:42
yes you've done the right thing by
00:39:44
calling us okay
00:39:49
next door at the Chapel's house the
00:39:52
neighbors were first on the scene
00:39:55
after they'd heard the screaming from Mr
00:39:58
Mrs Chapel's house they went into the
00:40:02
Chapel's house where they find them
00:40:04
lying on the floor in a pool of blood
00:40:06
they checked the Chapels for a pulse and
00:40:08
could find none
00:40:11
Steven and Jennifer's two young children
00:40:13
were asleep upstairs the police arrived
00:40:16
ready to arrest Colin
00:40:20
at first Colin raises Father Brian came
00:40:23
out of the house and they thought that
00:40:25
he was Colin Reeves the man that they
00:40:27
were supposed to be arresting put your
00:40:30
hands up right him yeah go in
00:40:33
put your arms up
00:40:37
listen you're under arrest at the minute
00:40:40
and the attempted murder of two people
00:40:43
inside the address next door do you
00:40:45
understand
00:40:47
so you can see bloody One camera on this
00:40:49
officer he gives us a visual of the
00:40:52
defendant we can see his tattoos the
00:40:55
same clothing let's walk over here a
00:40:58
minute can't we
00:41:00
Colin had already confessed to the
00:41:02
double murder but in the police
00:41:04
interview it was as if he was still in
00:41:07
the Army on active duty
00:41:12
still my job
00:41:16
confused to I am here
00:41:21
I was in an operation
00:41:24
in another police interview Colin
00:41:26
refused to answer questions
00:41:34
how were you involved in their deaths
00:41:40
in court Colin pled guilty to
00:41:42
manslaughter on the grounds of
00:41:44
diminished responsibility
00:41:46
his defense argued that the security
00:41:48
light in the garden triggered his
00:41:51
post-traumatic stress disorder which led
00:41:53
him to kill Stephen and Jennifer Chapel
00:41:56
we can clearly see ill intention
00:42:00
possibly a weapon being held we can kind
00:42:04
of discern that was already there to
00:42:06
commit a crime or to cause some serious
00:42:09
hurt
00:42:14
things like lights including white
00:42:16
lights can trigger flashbacks which are
00:42:19
one of the main symptoms of
00:42:20
post-traumatic stress disorder so that
00:42:22
piece of it is reasonable
00:42:25
but then saying that that caused him to
00:42:27
kill his neighbors is nonsense people
00:42:30
with post-traumatic stress disorder
00:42:32
aren't Justified to kill people and they
00:42:35
don't typically go on to harm anybody so
00:42:37
that that's a huge leap from what is a
00:42:40
likely trigger for a flashback whether
00:42:42
or not it actually triggered a flashback
00:42:44
I don't know
00:42:45
but even if it did that is no excuse to
00:42:48
then go and murder people
00:42:53
in court the details of what actually
00:42:56
happened on the night of the 21st of
00:42:58
November were revealed
00:43:00
Colin Reeves went to his military plaque
00:43:04
on the wall and this was a framed or an
00:43:07
event that he was given when he left the
00:43:09
RMA and it had a ceremonial dagger which
00:43:12
was traditionally given the soldiers you
00:43:14
know when they were decommissioned when
00:43:18
Colin Reeves went into the Chapel's
00:43:20
living room he was met by Steven Chapel
00:43:22
at the door
00:43:24
they stabbed him at least six times some
00:43:27
of the ones were up to 21 centimeters
00:43:30
deep
00:43:31
Steven Chapel then stumbled a couple of
00:43:34
steps forward and fell near the door
00:43:39
Colin Reeves then went over to the sofa
00:43:41
where Jennifer Chapel was sitting and he
00:43:44
stabbed her six times as well and she
00:43:46
then slumped forward onto the floor and
00:43:49
that's that's where she died when I
00:43:52
spoke to the place Colin Rave said that
00:43:55
he'd stop Mr Mrs Chapel a couple of
00:43:58
times eight but in fact it had been
00:44:00
quite a sustained and bloody attack
00:44:05
a jury found Colin Reeves guilty of
00:44:07
murder
00:44:08
he was sentenced to a minimum term of 38
00:44:11
years in prison
00:44:16
in one very big research study on
00:44:18
British soldiers researchers found that
00:44:21
soldiers especially those who returned
00:44:23
from active duty so who were in combat
00:44:25
they are three times more likely to be
00:44:27
convicted of violent offenses
00:44:30
and if we're looking at numbers one in
00:44:33
five so just over 20 percent of people
00:44:36
who return under the age of 30 are
00:44:39
convicted of a vile defense which is
00:44:41
astronomical
00:44:42
the numbers are so high partly because
00:44:44
in military training you're taught that
00:44:46
violence is a conflict resolution tool
00:44:48
that that ends your disputes second
00:44:51
there's often an aggrandizement of
00:44:53
aggression so it's valued it's seen as a
00:44:56
positive trait to be aggressive and
00:44:57
stand your ground I'm absolutely not
00:44:59
saying that everyone who is in combat or
00:45:02
is part of the military and comes home
00:45:04
that they are a danger to society we
00:45:06
need to be really careful not to be
00:45:08
leaning into the hero to zero narrative
00:45:12
because that can be really
00:45:14
stigmatizing also for individuals
00:45:16
themselves instead what we should be
00:45:18
looking at is making sure that support
00:45:19
that transition is effectively supported
00:45:22
so that we don't have these kinds of
00:45:23
outcomes
00:45:27
I think the motor of Stephen and
00:45:30
Jennifer Chapel is quite an unnerving
00:45:32
one because Colin Raves
00:45:35
probably had nothing more than
00:45:37
depression and anxiety like a lot of
00:45:40
people but that combined with the
00:45:44
dispute over the parking caused them to
00:45:47
just snap one day it doesn't make any
00:45:50
sense what he did and like his children
00:45:53
have no father because he's in prison
00:45:55
and the Chapel's Sons or orphans
00:46:02
foreign
