Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 1, Episode 18 - Full Episode

March 09, 2017 / 42:47

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the disappearance of Charlotte Pus, the suspicious death of military policeman Chad Langford, a prison escape involving Melody Woods and Michael Short, and the mysterious Nasca lines in Peru.

Charlotte Pus vanished under suspicious circumstances, with her husband Paul Pus claiming he was running errands at the time. Her family believes Paul knows more than he admits, citing inconsistencies in his story and a bloodstain found in their car.

Chad Langford, a military policeman, was found shot dead under strange circumstances, with the Army ruling it a suicide. His family disputes this, believing he was murdered, especially given his claims of undercover work involving drugs.

Melody Woods helped her boyfriend Michael Short escape from prison. Despite her parents' concerns about his violent past, she remained devoted to him, leading to a dramatic escape that left her whereabouts uncertain.

The episode also discusses the Nasca lines in Peru, exploring theories about their purpose, including suggestions they were landing strips for alien spacecraft or astronomical markers.

TL;DR

Charlotte Pus's disappearance, Chad Langford's suspicious death, Melody Woods's prison escape, and the mystery of the Nasca lines are featured in this episode.

00:01:37
hey guys what's up this is Paul um just
00:01:40
wondering if sh was over there I haven't
00:01:42
seen her all day I took the kids out
00:01:44
this is the actual phone message that
00:01:47
Paul polus left for his in-laws on the
00:01:49
day that his wife Charlotte vanished
00:01:52
from their home in
00:01:54
oh I just wondered if maybe she was with
00:01:56
you guys or if she called you or
00:01:58
something man to many Paul pus sounds
00:02:02
like a concerned husband getting a
00:02:04
little freaked out here but Charlotte's
00:02:05
family believes his is the voice of a
00:02:08
diabolical
00:02:11
killer I think Paul got angry and he
00:02:15
struck her and he couldn't stop
00:02:18
himself and I think Paul killed my
00:02:22
daughter they can point the finger at me
00:02:24
all they want I didn't do anything wrong
00:02:27
I know I didn't do anything wrong
00:02:30
and I can't change what other people
00:02:34
think has Paul polus gotten away with
00:02:37
murder the police can't say because
00:02:40
there's not enough evidence to prove
00:02:42
that a crime was even committed so Paul
00:02:45
and Charlotte's families will remain
00:02:47
locked in an ugly dispute over what
00:02:50
happened to Charlotte the day she
00:02:54
vanished about the only thing everyone
00:02:57
agreed on was that Charlotte was sick
00:02:59
the day before she
00:03:02
disappeared hey we're back
00:03:05
hi Paul's parents watched the couple's
00:03:08
two children while Paul took Charlotte
00:03:10
to the hospital doctors told her that
00:03:13
she had a serious ear infection did you
00:03:17
hi Mom yeah we just got back from the
00:03:20
hospital after Paul's parents left
00:03:22
Charlotte called her mother to check in
00:03:24
with her pills and a prescription
00:03:27
and it was the last time that Charlotte
00:03:30
was known to be
00:03:32
alive she said I'll talk to you in the
00:03:34
morning and at 1:25 a.m. I had hung up
00:03:37
the phone from
00:03:39
her at 10: to 9: on Saturday morning I
00:03:43
called the house to check on my daughter
00:03:46
and Paul answered the phone oh she's
00:03:49
doing a little bit better now she's
00:03:51
still up in bed she's still sleeping was
00:03:54
she okay well doctor said the best thing
00:03:57
now is just to get some rest will you
00:03:59
have Char let call me when she gets gets
00:04:01
up would you all right talk to you later
00:04:06
bye Char Paul says the last time he saw
00:04:10
Charlotte was shortly after that phone
00:04:12
call a little bit better just a little
00:04:15
bit I know you're tired I want to go out
00:04:17
and take the kids uh with me for a
00:04:19
little bit I think it was about 11:00 I
00:04:21
took the kids out to do errands for the
00:04:24
afternoon and I told her just stay in
00:04:26
bed and
00:04:27
relax um I'll bring the medication that
00:04:31
you need back just stay in bed take it
00:04:35
easy Paul says it was a busy morning he
00:04:38
buckled the kids into their car seats
00:04:40
and made stops at the pharmacy the
00:04:43
laundromat and a scrapyard we going to
00:04:45
get something to eat How Sound then he
00:04:47
bought burgers for the kids at a fast
00:04:49
food restaurant I know you guys are
00:04:51
hungry but several people dispute Paul's
00:04:54
version of what he says he did that
00:04:58
day one of those people is Charlotte's
00:05:01
mother she claims that she called the
00:05:03
house several times before 11:00 when
00:05:07
Paul says he was still at home I called
00:05:10
at 10: I called at 10 after 10 I called
00:05:12
at 20 after 10 I just kept calling
00:05:14
calling I thought something's not right
00:05:17
no answering machine nobody answering
00:05:19
the phone nothing and I thought well
00:05:21
where is
00:05:22
she a neighbor also contradicts Paul's
00:05:26
claim that he simply put the children in
00:05:28
the car and and left it was 10: after
00:05:31
11: when I pulled out of the driveway
00:05:33
and as I backed out I looked over at
00:05:36
Paul's house and he had his car backed
00:05:39
up to the the
00:05:41
porch the trunk was open all four doors
00:05:44
were open his car was completely packed
00:05:48
with boxes and
00:05:50
bags there was no sign of the children
00:05:53
and there was no way they could be in
00:05:55
the
00:05:55
car and as I drove by he looked at me
00:05:58
with a really strange a
00:06:01
look he uh indicated that he had the
00:06:04
children with him all this time we've
00:06:07
talked the people that he made contact
00:06:09
with no one saw the children with him my
00:06:12
children were with me all
00:06:15
afternoon I don't abandon my children
00:06:17
not for a second I don't leave the house
00:06:21
and leave them
00:06:22
unattended I don't leave them in a car
00:06:25
unintended I'm not that type of a parent
00:06:27
never will be Char we're home according
00:06:31
to Paul Charlotte wasn't home when he
00:06:34
got there it was around 400 p.m. Char
00:06:37
are you in
00:06:38
here I figured that she was feeling
00:06:41
better and had gone out let's see if she
00:06:43
put the kids up to finish their nap in
00:06:46
bed and
00:06:48
uh just watch TV and finish cleaning the
00:06:52
house about 7:30 I noticed her purse up
00:06:55
on the cabinets and my wife doesn't go
00:06:57
anywhere without her purse I can't
00:06:59
believe that she would have left without
00:07:01
it so I started calling around to see if
00:07:03
she'd gone out with
00:07:04
anybody hey guys what's up uh this is
00:07:07
Paul um just calling to see if you guys
00:07:10
had seen Char at all um Charlotte's
00:07:12
family was alarmed and headed over to
00:07:14
the house she's not
00:07:17
here Charlotte's sister amria arrived
00:07:21
first and began looking around she
00:07:23
noticed two sets of footprints in the
00:07:26
snow they went from a side door towards
00:07:28
a small shed shed and then back around
00:07:31
the
00:07:33
house the doors were bulging into pretty
00:07:36
much out of the
00:07:37
shed they just had like a regular
00:07:39
padlock on it and it kind of bothered me
00:07:42
the way the shed was cuz the doors
00:07:43
weren't flesh against it so i' gone into
00:07:46
the house and I had asked Paul for the
00:07:48
keys he got very angry the shed has
00:07:51
nothing to do with Charlotte and I'm not
00:07:52
giving you the keys and she'd asked him
00:07:54
repeatedly for these keys to the shed
00:07:56
and it got angrier and angrier it's a
00:07:58
shed all the normal garden tools
00:08:03
lawnmower it's as a matter of fact I
00:08:06
think at the time there was a key lock
00:08:07
and there was a key on Charlotte ring if
00:08:09
they wanted it open I would have given
00:08:11
him a
00:08:12
key I don't remember anything about
00:08:16
that by the time the rest of Charlotte's
00:08:18
family arrived they discovered that
00:08:20
Paul's parents had already gotten there
00:08:23
they were cleaning everything from the
00:08:25
attic to the basement they were washing
00:08:26
walls he had washed uh he had did LA
00:08:30
he had washed like scrubbed up the
00:08:32
kitchen real good and stuff which isn't
00:08:34
it's not characteristic of Paul to do
00:08:35
that what was his mother cleaning and
00:08:38
his father what was all this cleaning
00:08:40
that went on while they were
00:08:43
there the only floor I scrubbed was the
00:08:47
kitchen floor so I wouldn't stick to it
00:08:49
where the baby had dropped his food I'll
00:08:52
clean I live
00:08:54
there I like to live in a clean
00:08:58
house this State Bureau of criminal
00:09:00
investigation came in to check the house
00:09:03
find out if any crime of violence had
00:09:06
been committed the house was spotless it
00:09:10
was clean from top to bottom and it's
00:09:12
very unusual that a house is clean this
00:09:15
way investigators did find a blood stain
00:09:19
in the trunk of Paul and Charlotte's
00:09:21
car the sample was too small to be
00:09:24
positively identified but it was big
00:09:26
enough to cause speculation that
00:09:28
Charlotte
00:09:30
body had been in the
00:09:32
trunk Paul weighs 150 lb Charlotte
00:09:36
weighed approximately 300 lb Paul would
00:09:40
be required to transport a body that was
00:09:44
twice his weight and take it out into
00:09:47
the open and and put the body in the
00:09:49
trunk of the car to me it just does not
00:09:51
seem possible at
00:09:53
all but to Charlotte's family the two
00:09:56
sets of footprints in the snow suggested
00:09:59
that Paul had help I looked at Paul's
00:10:03
Shoe prints and they were the same
00:10:05
footprints that were in the snow and the
00:10:07
other Footprints were fairly large with
00:10:09
a shoe boot who I can suspect would have
00:10:12
been his fathers but they you know I
00:10:15
can't be definite on that either his
00:10:17
parents were brought in after the fact
00:10:19
to help him or they were there at the
00:10:21
time it
00:10:22
happened we have lived in this area for
00:10:27
40 years
00:10:29
we're not that type of
00:10:33
people I can't imagine why they would
00:10:36
think
00:10:38
that Paul even agreed to take a
00:10:41
polygraph test but on the day of his
00:10:43
appointment he disappeared
00:10:47
Paul he left the note on his dresser
00:10:50
part of it read I Love My Wife and would
00:10:54
never do anything to harm her
00:10:56
intentionally
00:10:59
Paul was gone for 3 months then one day
00:11:04
he reappeared with an
00:11:08
explanation I had a lot of mental
00:11:10
anguish I was going through and I wanted
00:11:13
some time alone people were driving in
00:11:15
front of the house
00:11:17
non-stop they didn't come by to give me
00:11:20
a hug or pat on the back and say we're
00:11:22
with you they just came by to
00:11:25
look talk to you later bye Charlotte's
00:11:28
disappearance seemed to to have affected
00:11:30
everybody Charlotte's family began to
00:11:33
wonder if the children had seen
00:11:37
anything I feel that my granddaughter
00:11:39
witnessed the violence and that it's
00:11:42
locked into her
00:11:44
memory we had to get rid of all dark
00:11:46
trash bags in our home and go with light
00:11:49
colored trash bags she's paranoid of a
00:11:51
dark trash bag she screams and she cries
00:11:54
because Mommy was put in a in a dark
00:11:57
trash bag
00:11:59
I think the child is being coached and
00:12:02
the sad part about it is it's very
00:12:04
detrimental to the child they're
00:12:06
destroying this child I didn't kill my
00:12:09
wife and I don't know where she is
00:12:14
didn't have anything to do with it nor
00:12:16
did my family have anything to do with
00:12:17
it as far as I

00:13:56
police radio have been deliberately ly
00:13:59
arranged in the middle of the street
00:14:02
there was no sign of Chad then a quarter
00:14:06
of a mile away the officer finds Chad's
00:14:09
body this is Papa Sierra I've located
00:14:11
Papa 21 at Bunker
00:14:14
8745 officer is down I request ambulance
00:14:16
and back up
00:14:19
immediately the officer was shocked by
00:14:21
Chad's
00:14:24
condition his head was bleeding and he
00:14:27
was barely breathing
00:14:30
his cap had been stuffed in his mouth
00:14:33
and the cord from his radar unit was
00:14:35
wrapped around his
00:14:37
neck his pistol strap was tied around
00:14:40
his ankles his handcuffs were clamped on
00:14:44
his left wrist on his left hand was a
00:14:47
cryptic message written in Black Ink
00:14:50
March 3th and what looked like the name
00:14:55
Robert but he's still alive let get a
00:14:58
shirt off
00:14:59
oddly Chad's 45 caliber pistol was found
00:15:03
under his left
00:15:07
shoulder get that out of here ballistic
00:15:10
test would later show that two shots had
00:15:12
been fired from Chad's
00:15:14
gun but it couldn't be determined
00:15:17
whether either of them had hit Chad get
00:15:19
an ambulance here ASAP
00:15:22
go Chad was rushed to a local hospital
00:15:26
where he died 2 hours later he was just
00:15:29
4 months away from his 21st
00:15:32
birthday Chad's family was shocked to
00:15:35
hear that the Army's explanation was
00:15:37
that Chad had killed
00:15:40
himself they're convinced that he was
00:15:43
killed in the line of
00:15:46
duty when I heard that I was very upset
00:15:48
about the whole thing I I know that my
00:15:50
boy did not kill himself there's no way
00:15:53
I feel that someone is covering
00:15:54
something up
00:15:57
here Chad Langford was raised by his
00:16:00
father and grandmother in a small
00:16:02
Northern California Community he joined
00:16:06
the army right after high school and was
00:16:08
sent to South Korea he earned several
00:16:10
Good Conduct
00:16:14
medals Chad joined the military police
00:16:17
At Redstone Arsenal as soon as he
00:16:19
returned from South Korea Chad's family
00:16:22
says that he loved the Army and planned
00:16:25
to reinlist however a few months later
00:16:28
Chad's personality suddenly
00:16:31
changed in January he called me and told
00:16:34
me that he'd been asked to uh do some
00:16:36
you undercover work he called me three
00:16:39
or four different times and each time he
00:16:41
gave me a little bit about this still
00:16:44
working
00:16:44
undercover hi Dad how you
00:16:47
doing yeah okay I guess listen remember
00:16:50
what I told you a few weeks ago about my
00:16:52
new
00:16:53
assignment well it's getting pretty
00:16:55
intense I had asked him just exactly
00:16:58
what he was working on and he said with
00:16:59
guns and drugs probably two or three
00:17:01
times he told me that uh if he was found
00:17:04
out that uh he was a dead
00:17:06
man I've been getting threats you know
00:17:09
phone calls and
00:17:10
letters no I don't know who's sending
00:17:12
them I I don't recognize his voice I
00:17:15
mean it it it might be nothing but I'm
00:17:17
starting to get worried I don't know
00:17:18
what to do that time I told him Chad you
00:17:21
got to get out of this and he came back
00:17:23
with I can't get out of
00:17:26
it 14 days later Chad was found with a
00:17:30
fatal bullet wound to the
00:17:33
Head the Army's criminal investigation
00:17:36
division or C reviewed Chad's death for
00:17:40
4 months they concluded that he had not
00:17:44
been involved in any undercovered
00:17:46
narcotics work they said that Chad
00:17:48
killed himself after suffering from
00:17:50
long-term emotional
00:17:53
problems I'm sorry I just can't believe
00:17:56
that any of that I mean I mean I raised
00:17:57
the boy for 20 years years I know a
00:17:59
better than that and uh the military has
00:18:03
psychologist out to talk to you for or
00:18:05
call you over the phone and talk to you
00:18:06
for 10 minutes and then they have the
00:18:08
complete live story of everybody and uh
00:18:10
they're so far off a base it's
00:18:14
unbelievable the report claimed that
00:18:16
Chad's suicide was triggered by a
00:18:18
breakup with his girlfriend the C report
00:18:22
said that Chad committed suicide for the
00:18:24
distraught over my breaking up with him
00:18:28
but but that wasn't
00:18:30
true um I didn't break up with Chad Chad
00:18:32
broke up with me I'm involved in things
00:18:35
you don't even understand I can't even
00:18:36
talk about him but why I mean I mean why
00:18:40
do we have to break up is there another
00:18:41
person is that it that's it is I there's
00:18:43
one else why do we have to break up
00:18:45
can't you understand
00:18:48
English just get out I had a feeling
00:18:52
that someone was telling him to break it
00:18:55
off with me and I think Chad did it to
00:18:57
protect me or
00:19:00
something in their report the Army
00:19:03
claimed that Chad had been plotting to
00:19:05
steal from the Army PX and cited
00:19:08
interviews with three soldiers to prove
00:19:11
it it seems very strange to me that
00:19:14
somebody would come
00:19:15
forward to the criminal investigation
00:19:18
division after someone was killed and
00:19:21
said yeah we're planning on Rob we were
00:19:23
planning on robbing a px fan it's really
00:19:26
tough that he's not here now to be able
00:19:28
to uh tell us what really
00:19:31
happened just hours before his death
00:19:34
Chad left phone messages for several
00:19:37
friends but not his family the C
00:19:40
interpreted Chad's calls as goodbye
00:19:43
messages prior to his
00:19:47
suicide there was a message on the
00:19:49
machine from
00:19:50
Chad it was him calling to say hi and
00:19:55
how was I doing was I taking care of
00:19:57
myself and that he would see me soon
00:20:01
sorry I missed you um give me a call bye
00:20:07
it didn't seem like a goodbye to
00:20:10
me she had to would have called me if
00:20:12
something was to the point where he was
00:20:14
going to commit suicide I know he would
00:20:16
have but he didn't call me and he didn't
00:20:18
call his
00:20:19
grandmother uh so there weren't weren't
00:20:22
goodbye calls as far as I'm concerned I
00:20:24
mean uh I know he would have called me
00:20:27
[Music]
00:20:31
next the Army's criminal investigation
00:20:34
division makes another shocking Claim
00:20:37
about Chad
00:20:46
Langford Huntsville Alabama the Redstone
00:20:50
army
00:20:53
base while on routine Patrol military
00:20:56
policeman Chad Langford
00:20:59
was found shot to death on a deserted
00:21:03
Road there was a single gunshot wound to
00:21:06
his
00:21:08
head the military insisted it was
00:21:13
suicide the official inquiry concluded
00:21:16
that every aspect of Chad's death was
00:21:19
methodically staged by Chad himself
00:21:28
[Music]
00:21:30
Redstone this is Papa 21 I have a
00:21:32
stranded vehicle they said he called in
00:21:35
a false report of an abandoned car r s
00:21:39
you that he had staged the scene to look
00:21:42
as if he had been accosted and then
00:21:47
murdered the official report even
00:21:49
claimed that Chad's accounts of
00:21:51
undercover assignments were a total
00:21:55
invention the
00:22:02
Chad's family however does not believe
00:22:05
he committed suicide and neither does
00:22:07
Huntsville reporter Julie
00:22:11
Schulz to start with it was very bizarre
00:22:13
even from the night that it happened
00:22:15
because um the Huntsville police
00:22:17
department and the other law enforcement
00:22:19
agencies never heard a word from the
00:22:21
Army about any of it and generally when
00:22:24
there's a police officer that's shot I
00:22:26
mean there'll be a man hunt everywhere
00:22:29
they also said there wasn't a struggle
00:22:31
but there was a struggle I mean I mean
00:22:33
there's no doubt about it they found two
00:22:34
buttons in the front seat of the
00:22:37
car even before the Army ruled that it
00:22:40
was suicide there was just wild
00:22:42
speculation as to what could have
00:22:43
happened to him people were saying
00:22:44
Espionage drug deals all kinds of things
00:22:47
then it perpetuated itself as it went
00:22:50
with the c
00:22:52
reports Jim also believes that the
00:22:55
military police missed opportunities to
00:22:58
question impossible suspects that
00:23:01
night the MPS stopped two different cars
00:23:04
within a mile of where Chad was
00:23:07
found but in both cases they didn't even
00:23:11
question them about Chad's
00:23:13
death it's absolutely crazy you're
00:23:16
talking about a murder here and it
00:23:18
appears to me that anybody within uh 3
00:23:21
or four mile radius of that place should
00:23:23
have been stopped and held for some for
00:23:25
some time they didn't do that
00:23:29
a source close to the investigation says
00:23:32
that one of those drivers was named
00:23:35
Robert the same name that was found
00:23:37
scrolled on Chad's
00:23:41
hand those who believed Chad was working
00:23:44
under cover are convinced his sudden and
00:23:47
violent death was nothing less than
00:23:51
murder I feel that he went down there on
00:23:54
that part of Base because he was
00:23:56
supposed to meet somebody down there
00:24:00
it would have taken more than one person
00:24:01
to handle Chad he was very strong very
00:24:07
agile and then again he knew these
00:24:10
people I know he knew these
00:24:17
people Redstone this is Papa 21 I need
00:24:19
backup now this is Papa
00:24:32
I think Shad was involved when he was
00:24:33
telling him he was involved in he was an
00:24:35
in between person with some drug dealing
00:24:38
I think he was put in that position by
00:24:39
somebody on that base whether military
00:24:42
or civilian he put somebody put him
00:24:44
there and I think he was a middle man
00:24:46
and I think he was set
00:24:49
up who did Kill Chad
00:24:52
Langford did he take his own life after
00:24:55
staging a murder scene to hide the real
00:24:57
truth
00:24:59
or were his accounts of undercover
00:25:01
Intrigue all too true and he was the
00:25:04
victim of a secret drug

17-year-old Melody Woods was not the
00:25:37
kind of girl you would expect to get
00:25:39
into trouble she liked school she didn't
00:25:41
stay out late and she had just started
00:25:44
dating but all of that was before she
00:25:46
met Michael short and fell in
00:25:52
love Fort Worth
00:25:55
Texas Melody Michael's here sorry Hi I
00:26:00
guess you met everybody already yeah
00:26:02
we're just getting to know each other a
00:26:03
little bit Melody met Michael during
00:26:05
summer school 19-year-old Michael made a
00:26:08
very good first
00:26:09
impression but Melody's parents never
00:26:12
guessed that the man their daughter was
00:26:15
dating had a criminal
00:26:19
record 6 months earlier a couple was
00:26:22
driving on a highway in Texas when
00:26:24
Michael and a friend pulled up behind
00:26:26
them they starting to bug me
00:26:29
Michael Short harassed the frightened
00:26:31
couple for 10 minutes becoming more and
00:26:34
more agitated hey Grandma where'd you
00:26:37
learn how to drive you're lucky I run
00:26:40
right over you don't look at him play
00:26:42
freaking game play freaking game andone
00:26:45
he's got a gun Drive do
00:26:53
something police tracked Michael down by
00:26:56
his license plate number he was char
00:26:58
charged with attempted murder a few
00:27:00
months later while he was out on bail he
00:27:03
met Melody
00:27:06
Woods she fell head over heels for
00:27:08
Michael I mean from the very first day
00:27:10
she came home and was so excited about
00:27:12
him telling me about him and just
00:27:14
thought that he was everything that she
00:27:15
had ever
00:27:18
wanted Melody's parents say their
00:27:20
daughter found out about Michael's past
00:27:23
but it was too late she was already
00:27:26
under his spell I want you to have this
00:27:29
it's a beeper duh I know what a beeper
00:27:31
looks like when I call you I'll punch
00:27:34
you
00:27:34
911 drop whatever you're doing and give
00:27:36
me a call right away I don't want to
00:27:37
have to worry about
00:27:39
you I had to talk with her and I told
00:27:41
her I said I I I'm afraid that you know
00:27:43
he's being a little bit too
00:27:46
possessive and she was like well you
00:27:48
know we just really enjoy being together
00:27:50
and there's really nothing to it and
00:27:51
he's not
00:27:53
possessive a few months later Michael
00:27:56
Short was found guilty and in the
00:27:58
highway shooting he was sentenced to 8
00:28:01
years in prison Melody's parents hoped
00:28:03
that the relationship would end but
00:28:06
Melody refused to give up on
00:28:09
short after the impact wor off she
00:28:12
started talking about I can get through
00:28:15
this you know I'll make it it may just
00:28:16
be four years he may not spend eight
00:28:18
there so we'll we'll do the best we can
00:28:21
I can make it through
00:28:23
this the jail phone became the young
00:28:27
couple's life T oh where are you he
00:28:30
called us day and night night and day he
00:28:32
was relentless with the phone calls I
00:28:34
mean they just never would
00:28:37
stop the phone calls at first were a
00:28:40
blessing for Mel I mean any contact that
00:28:42
she could have with him she was thrilled
00:28:44
to
00:28:45
death as time went along she started to
00:28:49
get a little
00:28:51
irritated but then Michael would say you
00:28:55
you just don't understand how horrible
00:28:56
it is for me here the only thing I've
00:28:59
got they're from Michael you can't
00:29:00
forsake me now you're my soulmate and
00:29:02
just really would make her feel bad so
00:29:04
then she would go back to accepting all
00:29:06
the phone
00:29:08
calls from jail short controlled every
00:29:11
aspect of Melody's life for more than a
00:29:14
year even his fellow inmates called him
00:29:16
the little
00:29:19
bully One Summer Morning authorities
00:29:21
learned just how much control he really
00:29:24
had over
00:29:26
Melody that morning Melody and a
00:29:29
girlfriend waited outside the prison in
00:29:32
a borrowed
00:29:34
van all right Rex over line it up two to
00:29:37

00:29:59
the entire Escape took less than 1
00:30:03
minute short changed his clothes at a
00:30:05
nearby hotel and dumped the
00:30:08
van then he and Melody left in her car
00:30:15
okay I personally don't believe that
00:30:17
Melly had any intentions on leaving with
00:30:19
him there's a lot of things she didn't
00:30:21
take with her it was uh clothes
00:30:26
and girl things like rollers and hair
00:30:29
dryers and just a bunch of
00:30:32
stuff the only thing that we've received
00:30:35
from Melody since her disappearance was
00:30:37
one postcard from Chattanooga Tennessee
00:30:39
and the only thing that that postcard
00:30:41
said was I'm okay I'm sorry and I love
00:30:45
you very much that was about a week
00:30:48
after her
00:30:50
disappearance what concerns me the most
00:30:52
about Melody's disappearance is that
00:30:56
just that she's disappeared and we've
00:30:59
had three unconfirmed sightings of
00:31:02
Michael nobody has ever seen Melody and
00:31:07
one would have to wonder has she already
00:31:09
become a liability to
00:31:12
him
00:31:14
update after 9 months on the Run Michael
00:31:18
short and Melody Woods were arrested in
00:31:20
Fort Worth Texas one of Melody's
00:31:23
relatives told authorities where to find
00:31:26
them Michael Short received an
00:31:28
additional 7 years that ran concurrently
00:31:32
with the aggravated assault charge he
00:31:34
has since been released Melody Woods
00:31:37
received 10 years probation for her role

00:32:22

years old when Jeannie read her mother's

diary she learned that the man she had
00:32:42
known as her father wasn't really her
00:32:44
father after
00:32:48
all the diary described how paty went to
00:32:51
a local park after getting into an
00:32:53
argument with her
00:32:55
fiance hello there she met Duncan
00:32:58
who was stationed at Fort Bliss Texas py
00:33:01
was immediately smitten they soon began
00:33:04
dating and paty decided not to tell her
00:33:07
fiance or Duncan about each
00:33:10
other my mother she thought of Duncan as
00:33:14
a very kind person and even stated that
00:33:18
of all the people that she had known
00:33:20
that he was the kindest uh person um she
00:33:25
had ever met
00:33:27
6 months later paty was pregnant she
00:33:31

00:33:53
only cause people harm and cause a lot
00:33:57
of s suffering and um that's why for me
00:34:01
the truth has to come out and I have to

update the night we aired this story a
00:34:15
woman named Suzanne Gilmore was watching
00:34:18
at the time Suzanne's husband Duncan was
00:34:21
sound
00:34:22
asleep Jeanie's mother had written in
00:34:25
her diary that he was the sweetest
00:34:27
kindest person that she had ever met I
00:34:29
just said that's my Duncan I knew that
00:34:32
it was my Duncan and the next thing I
00:34:35
know my wife woke me up and she said
00:34:39
were you ever stationed in Al Paso Texas
00:34:42
at Fort Bliss when you were in the Army
00:34:44
and I said yeah she said were you there
00:34:46
in
00:34:47
1958 and I said yeah I was there in
00:34:51
1958 and she said did you ever know paty
00:34:54
Summers and I said yeah I know I knew
00:34:57
paty Summers and I said it's very
00:34:59
important did you sleep with her and he
00:35:01
said well
00:35:06
yeah N9 Days Later Duncan and his
00:35:10
daughter jeie met for the first
00:35:13
time hi hi
00:35:17
honey when I hiked my dad it was a
00:35:20
combination of being really really happy
00:35:24
but also there was a little sad sadness
00:35:28
there that so many years have gone by
00:35:32
and that we've missed out on each
00:35:34
other's lives I love you I love you
00:35:39
too I will always remember Jenny coming
00:35:42
to the door and for the first time
00:35:44
seeing my daughter and and holding
00:35:48

00:35:51

00:35:58

00:36:01
be everything that I thought he was
00:36:03
going to be and tomorrow and the day

00:37:21
nascus inscribed the giant drawings
00:37:23
between 1500 and 2500 years ago
00:37:28
but the nascus left little behind that
00:37:31
tell us the meaning of the figures or
00:37:33
reveal how they were
00:37:36
made all told there are nearly a
00:37:39
thousand lines shapes and figures spread
00:37:42
across the
00:37:45
plateau one of the first archaeologists
00:37:48
to visit nasca believed that the plateau
00:37:51
was a giant astral
00:37:53
calendar he observed that on the longest
00:37:56
day of the year the lined up perfectly
00:37:59
with one of the
00:38:01
markings a German mathematician named
00:38:03
Maria raike studied the plateau for over
00:38:06
40 years she concluded that many of the
00:38:10
lines and animal figures pointed to
00:38:12
Major
00:38:15
constellations if you go out there at
00:38:17
dawn where you can see the sky you can
00:38:21
see the dawn glow reflecting off of
00:38:23
those lines and they really become like
00:38:25
lighted pointers to the heavens
00:38:30
a radically different theory was
00:38:32
proposed by author Eric Von donin in the
00:38:35
late
00:38:37
1960s he claimed that some of the
00:38:39
markings were giant Landing strips for
00:38:42
alien
00:38:43
spacecraft He suggests that the nazcas
00:38:46
had constructed the runways under the
00:38:48
direct orders of
00:38:51
aliens Von Dakin identified this 850 ft
00:38:55
marking as a signpost pointing to the
00:38:58
landing
00:38:59
strip and he thought that this is a
00:39:02
portrait of one of the explorers in a
00:39:05
space
00:39:06
[Music]
00:39:08
suit scientists aren't against the idea
00:39:11
of necessarily extraterrestrials per se
00:39:15
but we do expect some evidence before we
00:39:17
then start doing a lot of research in
00:39:19
that
00:39:21
direction in 1982 archaeologists tried
00:39:25
to figure out how the nazcas made the
00:39:27
line
00:39:28
they decided to replicate the whole
00:39:30
process using only simple
00:39:34
tools we pired a couple of broomsticks
00:39:36
from the local hotel some pieces of
00:39:38
string laid out a line and we proceeded
00:39:41
to clean and sweep away the surface of
00:39:43
the
00:39:44
line it took us a group of 12 one
00:39:48
morning to make a line about 20 yards
00:39:51
long 2 yards wide clear it completely
00:39:54
and here was a brand spanking new nascal
00:39:57
line
00:39:59
Dr avani's line looks similar to some of
00:40:02
the other figures but creating this line
00:40:05
and the giant sprawling monkey were two
00:40:07
different
00:40:08
things it took the tremendous leap of
00:40:11
imagination to make these large models
00:40:14
on the ground which they themselves
00:40:17
presumably did not see not being able to
00:40:21
fly but Jim Woodman a British author and
00:40:24
Explorer argued that maybe they did did
00:40:28
fly to prove his point Woodman hired a
00:40:31
Peruvian Craftsman to stitch together a
00:40:34
hot air balloon from materials that
00:40:36
would have been available to the ancient
00:40:39
nascus perhaps for the first time in
00:40:42
centuries the Figures were seen from a
00:40:44
hot air balloon hundreds of feet above
00:40:47
the
00:40:49
desert however many scientists still
00:40:52
believe that the lines were meant to be
00:40:54
experienced from the ground
00:40:59
the straight lines look like roadways
00:41:02
they start from someplace they lead to
00:41:04
some place the idea that the lines are
00:41:06
meant to be walked on seems to me to be
00:41:08
a much more feasible one than the notion
00:41:10
that somebody had to look at them from
00:41:13
above the animals are made out of a
00:41:15
single sinuous continuous line that
00:41:18
begins and ends at the same point I can
00:41:21
imagine that a worshipper of a deity
00:41:24
would walk around one of these animal
00:41:26
fig
00:41:28
to pray to the god or gods that had to
00:41:30
do with that animal that probably some
00:41:33
invocation to the gods would have
00:41:35
happened
00:41:38
here but in the end there are no
00:41:41
conclusive answers to the mystery of the
00:41:43
nasca lines those who created the
00:41:46
wondrous artwork have been dead for
00:41:49
centuries buried in tombs that surround
00:41:52
the
00:41:53
plateau over the years their bones have
00:41:56
been carelessly scattered scattered by
00:41:58
grave
00:41:59
robbers however the ancient Mysteries of
00:42:02
the nasca will most likely remain
00:42:05
undisturbed forever
