Gone Ballistic | Forensic Files | S14 E16 | FULL EPISODE

March 13, 2021 / 21:15

This episode covers the murder of real estate developer Alan Helmick, the investigation into his death, and the subsequent trial of his wife, Miriam Helmick.

Alan Helmick faced threats to his life, including an attempted car bombing, before he was found shot in his office. His wife, Miriam, discovered his body and became a suspect when evidence pointed to her involvement.

Investigators uncovered Miriam's internet searches related to prescription drug overdoses and found she had forged checks from Alan. A greeting card she delivered to herself raised further suspicion.

Ballistics evidence linked a bullet from a past incident to the gun that killed Alan, leading to Miriam's arrest. During her trial, she was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The case is notable for its unique twists, including the discovery of the bullet from 20 years prior and Miriam's attempts to mislead investigators.

TL;DR

Real estate developer Alan Helmick is murdered; his wife Miriam is convicted after evidence links her to the crime.

00:00:08
for his life
00:00:09
somebody wanted this guy dead i was
00:00:11
scared for him i was very scared for him
00:00:14
on a spring afternoon his worst fears
00:00:17
come true
00:00:21
a computer search exposes some dark
00:00:24
secrets
00:00:25
someone was researching death but it's a
00:00:28
20 year old clue
00:00:29
that helps unlock the case are you
00:00:32
kidding
00:00:33
you found a bullet that had been fired
00:00:35
in 1989
00:00:45
in western colorado a successful land
00:00:48
developer
00:00:48
alan helmick and his wife miriam were
00:00:51
going through
00:00:52
difficult times professionally
00:00:56
allen's real estate ventures weren't
00:00:58
what they once were
00:01:02
on a personal level someone had recently
00:01:05
tried to take
00:01:06
ellen's life while allen is waiting for
00:01:09
miriam
00:01:10
he notices smoke coming out the back end
00:01:13
of his car
00:01:16
it was right in the middle of a parking
00:01:18
lot in broad daylight
00:01:21
apparently someone had placed a lit fuse
00:01:23
in the gas tank
00:01:25
fortunately alan saw the smoke and got
00:01:28
out in time
00:01:30
for whatever reason the conditions
00:01:32
weren't right for an explosion the car
00:01:34
did not explode
00:01:36
unfortunately the parking lot had no
00:01:39
surveillance camera so it was impossible
00:01:41
to tell
00:01:42
who had planted the device do you know
00:01:45
anyone that would have a problem with
00:01:46
you
00:01:46
there are two people that have had a
00:01:48
problem with me okay who are those two
00:01:50
people uh
00:01:50
our two entities one was the state bank
00:01:53
the president the vice president
00:01:54
they were trying to accuse me of an
00:01:56
illegal loan which i didn't make they
00:01:58
made
00:01:59
i had the sense and i think the
00:02:01
investigators had the sense that this
00:02:02
was
00:02:03
going to be a drawn out deal did a
00:02:05
business deal go bad
00:02:07
there was some sales of some properties
00:02:09
that involved
00:02:10
various people were one of those people
00:02:12
angry
00:02:13
and took it out on allen in a different
00:02:15
way maybe because they lost
00:02:17
money six weeks later
00:02:21
allen missed a scheduled lunch date with
00:02:23
his wife
00:02:24
[Music]
00:02:26
when miriam drove home she found him
00:02:30
on the floor of his office
00:02:37
what's the problem tell me exactly what
00:02:39
happened he was
00:02:41
on the fly and it looks like somebody
00:02:43
came in and robbed them
00:02:46
when police and paramedics arrived they
00:02:48
pronounced alan helmick
00:02:50
dead at the scene he'd been shot once in
00:02:53
the back of his head
00:02:58
a shell casing from a 25 caliber handgun
00:03:02
was next to the body suicide was
00:03:04
immediately eliminated
00:03:06
no weapon present and the location of
00:03:08
where the injury was
00:03:10
was not feasible to to be suicide
00:03:13
allen's son-in-law learned of the murder
00:03:16
when he arrived at the scene
00:03:21
[Music]
00:03:28
it was terrible for all of us
00:03:32
it was it was beyond terrible
00:03:36
it's terrible for someone to get shot
00:03:39
because this is a person that people
00:03:41
loved and respected and he loved his
00:03:43
family and he tried to make his life
00:03:45
better and
00:03:46
he loved people around him at first
00:03:50
it looked like robbery was a possible
00:03:53
motive
00:03:54
several drawers were pulled out and the
00:03:56
jewelry box was empty
00:03:57
but there was no forced entry so that
00:04:01
theory was quickly ruled out
00:04:03
it was not consistent with other
00:04:05
burglary cases that i have worked
00:04:07
the rest of the house was not ransacked
00:04:09
as you would expect to find
00:04:10
in most of the burglary cases that we've
00:04:13
worked
00:04:14
since miriam helmick found the body
00:04:17
she was automatically considered a
00:04:19
suspect but she willingly agreed
00:04:21
to take a gunshot residue test
00:04:26
anyone who fires a gun usually comes
00:04:28
into contact with the gases
00:04:30
discharged when the bullet is fired
00:04:34
detectives swabbed marion's hands arms
00:04:37
and face
00:04:38
but no gunshot residue was detected
00:04:42
investigators now wondered who
00:04:46
wanted alan helnick dead and why
00:04:53
i'm missing my right my right arm i feel
00:04:56
like
00:04:56
i'm just missing my life
00:05:00
i came in and found it
00:05:03
alan and miriam helmik had been married
00:05:06
for about two years
00:05:07
it was a second marriage for both allen
00:05:10
and miriam were known as being
00:05:12
inseparable
00:05:13
social friends of theirs said they were
00:05:15
always together
00:05:16
they were like two peas in a pot
00:05:19
miriam was convinced that alan's murder
00:05:23
and the attempted car bombing six weeks
00:05:25
earlier
00:05:26
were both related
00:05:30
a week after allen's funeral miriam
00:05:33
found a greeting card under her front
00:05:36
doormat it was addressed to
00:05:40
the grieving widow she opened the card
00:05:44
and it read insanity is doing the same
00:05:47
thing
00:05:47
over and over again and expecting a
00:05:49
different result
00:05:50
allen was first your next run run run
00:05:53
miriam
00:05:54
essentially collapses physically
00:05:57
collapses many words in the message were
00:06:00
misspelled including
00:06:02
alan's name there was no postmark on the
00:06:06
envelope which meant
00:06:07
it had been hand delivered
00:06:10
miriam is frantic about this she is
00:06:13
convinced
00:06:14
that the killer is now out to get her
00:06:18
the simple block lettering made
00:06:20
handwriting analysis impossible
00:06:23
there were no fingerprints on the
00:06:25
envelope or the letter
00:06:27
the envelope wasn't sealed so there was
00:06:30
no
00:06:30
saliva on the envelope flap and no dna
00:06:34
to recover
00:06:35
and the barcode on the back of the card
00:06:38
was missing
00:06:40
[Music]
00:06:42
it had been cut out and as if somebody
00:06:44
knew we might
00:06:45
want to try to trace that greeting card
00:06:48
and find out where it came from
00:06:51
investigators contacted the company that
00:06:53
made the card and learned
00:06:55
it was sold in three different stores in
00:06:57
the area
00:06:59
the most recent sale happened just four
00:07:02
days before the card was delivered
00:07:04
it was a cash purchase at a store 13
00:07:07
miles from the helmet's house
00:07:10
detectives asked to see the store's
00:07:13
surveillance
00:07:15
lo and behold who's purchasing the
00:07:17
greeting card
00:07:18
it's miriam helmik based on her haircut
00:07:22
her glasses the way she walked her body
00:07:24
shape there was no doubt in our mind
00:07:26
that it was miriam hellmich miriam was
00:07:29
confronted
00:07:30
with the surveillance image she did
00:07:33
admit to
00:07:34
placing the card at her house her
00:07:36
explanation was to
00:07:38
get law enforcement to refocus on the
00:07:40
investigation and be more active
00:07:42
now suspicious investigators searched
00:07:45
miriam and alan's
00:07:47
computer hard drives for possible clues
00:07:51
they had two distinct computers side by
00:07:53
side
00:07:54
allen used one miriam used one people
00:07:57
tend to be very
00:07:58
intimate with their computers they will
00:08:01
ask
00:08:01
it questions through google that they
00:08:03
would not ask another human being
00:08:05
and investigators soon learned that
00:08:08
miriam
00:08:09
had been searching the internet for all
00:08:12
sorts of
00:08:13
interesting information especially
00:08:16
about the prescription drugs alan had
00:08:19
been taking
00:08:22
i recovered approximately 180 online
00:08:25
medical
00:08:26
searches for things such as viagra
00:08:29
overdose ambient overdose lysinopril
00:08:32
overdose
00:08:32
a combination of those three drugs mixed
00:08:35
together
00:08:36
pain killing overdoses i think she was
00:08:38
looking at various ways to
00:08:41
kill alan investigators also learned
00:08:45
miriam would benefit handsomely as a
00:08:47
result of alan's death
00:08:51
allen's real estate holdings were worth
00:08:54
millions
00:08:55
yes the oldest motive in the world
00:08:59
there was only one problem investigators
00:09:02
had
00:09:03
no proof miriam shot and
00:09:06
killed her husband
00:09:11
investigators now believed that alan
00:09:14
hellmacht might have been murdered not
00:09:16
by an angry business associate but
00:09:19
by his second wife miriam when
00:09:23
police checked her background they
00:09:24
discovered
00:09:26
something suspicious six years earlier
00:09:30
miriam's first husband jack giles shot
00:09:33
himself to death
00:09:34
while he was sleeping next to her
00:09:37
anytime you hear that a woman has more
00:09:40
than one husband die of a gunshot wound
00:09:42
to the head
00:09:43
you get concerned and colorado
00:09:46
investigators soon discovered something
00:09:48
odd about this suicide
00:09:52
for one thing it was miriam's
00:09:54
half-brother a local policeman who was
00:09:56
first
00:09:57
on the scene and declared the death a
00:10:00
suicide
00:10:02
this despite the fact jack giles
00:10:05
apparently
00:10:06
killed himself with his right hand
00:10:10
jack couldn't do anything with his right
00:10:12
hand
00:10:13
he was a complete lefty and yet he would
00:10:16
choose to shoot himself
00:10:17
kill himself with his offhand his right
00:10:20
hand
00:10:20
that didn't make sense to us also
00:10:23
strange
00:10:25
was miriam's explanation as to why
00:10:28
jack committed suicide she said yes he
00:10:31
was very depressed
00:10:33
because of her daughter amy who had
00:10:37
supposedly overdosed miriam
00:10:40
changed that story when she told it to
00:10:42
me quite a few times
00:10:43
it was overdosed once and one time it
00:10:46
was uh
00:10:47
some sort of min uh physical
00:10:51
uh ailment records showed
00:10:56
miriam was the beneficiary of jack giles
00:10:59
100 000 life insurance policy
00:11:03
she apparently gets some insurance
00:11:05
settlement
00:11:07
and very quickly is back living
00:11:10
the life while trying to solve the
00:11:13
murder of miriam's second husband
00:11:16
alan helmek investigators found
00:11:19
a series of checks totaling 40 000
00:11:22
made out to miriam the checks were
00:11:26
signed by allen
00:11:28
but now police weren't so sure
00:11:31
we believe there were a lot more checks
00:11:34
that
00:11:35
she probably forged but we tried to
00:11:37
limit them to the checks that we thought
00:11:39
we had the best
00:11:40
evidence on forensic document examiners
00:11:43
determined
00:11:44
ten czechs were forgeries although it
00:11:47
was impossible to say conclusively
00:11:49
that miriam was the forger
00:11:52
police now believed that the attempted
00:11:55
bombing of alan's car
00:11:57
was miriam's work
00:12:01
she was conveniently away from the car
00:12:03
inside the store
00:12:05
when alan found the lighted wick
00:12:08
sticking out of his gas
00:12:09
tank to investigators
00:12:12
it reminded them of the car bombing
00:12:15
scene in the hit
00:12:16
film no country for old men
00:12:19
the villain in that particular movie
00:12:23
blows up a car using a homemade wick and
00:12:26
we wondered if
00:12:27
alan and miriam had actually seen that
00:12:29
movie
00:12:30
we checked their cable billing
00:12:33
statements
00:12:34
and sure enough they had rented that
00:12:36
movie
00:12:37
four days before this attempted car fire
00:12:41
in delta colorado police had a wealth of
00:12:45
circumstantial evidence the surveillance
00:12:48
image in the card store
00:12:50
the czech forgeries the attempted car
00:12:53
bombing
00:12:54
and the computer searches there are so
00:12:57
many
00:12:58
components and if you look at the
00:13:01
totality of
00:13:02
all the components it's very clear what
00:13:04
happened in this case
00:13:06
the only thing they didn't have was the
00:13:09
murder weapon
00:13:10
a 25 caliber handgun
00:13:13
allen's daughter told police her father
00:13:15
did own a 25-caliber gun that was a
00:13:18
family heirloom
00:13:21
my little sister christy recalled seeing
00:13:24
the gun that they believed was used in
00:13:27
the murder
00:13:28
in my father's dresser drawer under the
00:13:30
socks she was putting away laundry for
00:13:32
him
00:13:33
that gun was now missing from the home's
00:13:36
inventory
00:13:38
it would have pointed the finger at
00:13:39
miriam helmik the person who would have
00:13:41
had access to it and
00:13:43
easy access to it the gift that kept on
00:13:45
giving
00:13:47
every time you thought she knew
00:13:48
everything something else would come up
00:13:49
with her
00:13:50
and investigators learned something more
00:13:55
20 years earlier that same gun had been
00:13:58
fired in a domestic dispute involving
00:14:01
wendy's grandparents my grandfather
00:14:05
went a little crazy and tried to shoot
00:14:08
my grandmother
00:14:09
in their front lawn one day a neighbor
00:14:12
saw what was happening and
00:14:13
intervened he jumped on my grandfather
00:14:17
and the gun went off turns out it went
00:14:21
into the lawn
00:14:22
that's where this history from this gun
00:14:24
comes from
00:14:26
the neighbor who intervened in the
00:14:28
shooting incident 20 years earlier
00:14:30
was still alive and remembered it
00:14:34
vividly the neighbor did tell the police
00:14:36
where he believed it had injured the
00:14:38
lawn
00:14:40
with the slimmest of hopes forensic
00:14:43
analysts
00:14:44
searched for the bullet that had been
00:14:46
buried for almost
00:14:47
20 years we went out there
00:14:51
with metal detectors and after some time
00:14:54
we were able to locate
00:14:56
the bullet are you kidding you found a
00:14:59
bullet that had been fired in 1989
00:15:02
amazing we don't get those sorts of
00:15:04
breaks
00:15:05
could the bullet from the 1989 shooting
00:15:09
tie miriam to the gun that killed her
00:15:12
husband
00:15:17
family members told police that alan
00:15:19
helmick owned
00:15:21
a 25 caliber handgun but
00:15:24
it was now missing the thing that
00:15:27
alan's daughter remembered about this
00:15:29
gun was that it was smallish
00:15:31
and that it had a white handle
00:15:33
[Music]
00:15:34
a bullet from that weapon was fired into
00:15:37
the ground
00:15:38
20 years earlier in a domestic dispute
00:15:42
incredibly with the help of an
00:15:44
eyewitness and metal detectors
00:15:47
investigators found that bullet
00:15:51
unfortunately after two decades in the
00:15:53
ground
00:15:54
it had taken a beating the bullet was
00:15:58
badly corroded and weathered and
00:16:01
it bore marks that are consistent with
00:16:04
damage caused by
00:16:06
striking sand or small stone particles
00:16:10
the bullet that killed alan helmuck was
00:16:12
also damaged as a result of
00:16:14
impact but the lands and grooves from
00:16:17
both bullets were still
00:16:19
visible investigators compared those
00:16:22
markings to see if both bullets came
00:16:25
from the same weapon i was able to
00:16:28
determine
00:16:29
that the bullet recovered from the yard
00:16:32
corresponded
00:16:33
with the bullet from the victim in
00:16:35
number of land and groove impressions
00:16:37
and their widths i was able to determine
00:16:39
also
00:16:40
that the fired bullet from the yard was
00:16:43
a right-hand twist
00:16:44
my result was that the two bullets could
00:16:47
have been fired
00:16:49
by the same firearm the ballistics
00:16:52
along with the circumstantial evidence
00:16:55
was more than enough to charge
00:16:57
miriam helmik with murder
00:17:00
prosecutors believe miriam was
00:17:03
systematically
00:17:04
stealing money from alan's business
00:17:06
accounts and that
00:17:07
at some point allen found out about it
00:17:12
thinking their relationship was soon to
00:17:14
end
00:17:15
prosecutors believe miriam tried to kill
00:17:18
alan
00:17:19
first by giving him an overdose of his
00:17:21
prescription medicines
00:17:27
[Music]
00:17:29
when that didn't work prosecutors
00:17:32
believe miriam placed
00:17:34
a lighted wick in the gas tank of the
00:17:37
car
00:17:38
while allen waited for her in a shopping
00:17:40
center parking lot
00:17:44
fortunately the attempt failed miserably
00:17:53
but prosecutors believe miriam knew
00:17:55
about the family heirloom
00:17:57
25 caliber pistol allen kept in his sock
00:18:00
drawer
00:18:03
and when the couple was alone miriam
00:18:07
waited until alan was in his office
00:18:10
walked up behind him and fired a single
00:18:14
shot she
00:18:17
showered changed her clothes and drove
00:18:20
to the chinese restaurant
00:18:22
in order to set up her alibi
00:18:26
she left a message on allen's voicemail
00:18:28
asking
00:18:29
where he was hey alan this isn't funny
00:18:32
anymore i've been sitting here in front
00:18:34
of the chinese dragon
00:18:36
or the chinese place for 15 minutes and
00:18:38
you're never late
00:18:40
no one knows where she disposed of the
00:18:43
murder weapon
00:18:44
and her clothes but presumably she did
00:18:47
so
00:18:47
on her way to or from the chinese
00:18:50
restaurant
00:18:53
when miriam returned home she called
00:18:56
9-1-1
00:18:56
saying she had just found allen's body
00:18:59
in a pool of blood
00:19:04
it looks like somebody came in and
00:19:06
robbed them
00:19:08
after alan's funeral miriam purchased
00:19:11
the greeting card
00:19:13
and used it to make it appear that she
00:19:16
too
00:19:16
was a potential target she didn't
00:19:20
realize
00:19:21
the store's surveillance camera would
00:19:23
capture the purchase
00:19:26
oh it was clear as day miriam she was
00:19:28
wearing some of the same clothes that
00:19:29
she'd worn in the interview
00:19:32
when she was interviewed by law
00:19:34
enforcement during her trial
00:19:37
miriam took the stand in her own defense
00:19:40
trial watchers said her performance did
00:19:43
more harm
00:19:44
than good i didn't know what happened to
00:19:47
him
00:19:49
and i held his hand
00:19:52
for a few minutes and tried to make some
00:19:54
sense of it all
00:19:56
i don't get many opportunities like that
00:19:58
and that is something that'll stay with
00:20:00
me for some time because
00:20:02
i had to call her more or less a killer
00:20:05
in front of the jury
00:20:06
and i wasn't going to beat around the
00:20:07
bushes with that i was going to let the
00:20:10
jury know that i didn't buy into her
00:20:12
crying act
00:20:13
in speaking with the jury when i asked
00:20:15
what was your impression of her
00:20:17
about six people answered together and
00:20:20
said liar
00:20:21
we the jury find the defendant marion
00:20:23
helmet guilty and first degree murder
00:20:25
miriam hellmick was sentenced to life in
00:20:28
prison
00:20:29
plus 108 years
00:20:32
our father is gone but we're gonna move
00:20:35
forward and we're gonna have a
00:20:36
fulfilling life
00:20:38
and um you you miriam got what you
00:20:42
deserved
00:20:44
he was looking for love he thought he
00:20:46
found it he found someone that was after
00:20:48
his money
00:20:49
and it cost him his life all the unique
00:20:51
twists that this
00:20:52
case took will be one that will be
00:20:55
etched in my memory
00:20:56
the greeting card stands out the bullet
00:20:58
from 1989
00:21:00
the likelihood of us finding that one
00:21:02
bullet that allows us to compare to that
00:21:04
one gun that we can't find
00:21:06
is the work that was done on that is
00:21:11
[Music]
00:21:13
amazing
