Forensic Files - Season 10, Episode 23 - Prints Among Thieves - Full Episode

January 14, 2022 / 21:41

This episode covers the murder of millionaire Robert Rogers, the investigation into his death, and the eventual arrest of his caretaker Sharon Zachary.

Robert Rogers, an eccentric millionaire from Battle Creek, Michigan, was found beaten to death in his home. Investigators initially believed robbery was the motive, but they discovered $133,000 in cash hidden in the house.

Rogers' estranged son, Donald, was questioned due to their troubled relationship and his exclusion from the will. However, forensic evidence pointed towards Sharon Zachary, who had been his caretaker and was named the sole beneficiary of his estate.

Key evidence included a partial thumbprint on Rogers' belt and a shoe impression found at the crime scene, both linked to Zachary. She was found to have embezzled funds from Rogers, leading investigators to suspect her motive was financial.

Sharon Zachary was charged with first-degree murder, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison. The episode highlights how forensic evidence played a crucial role in solving the case.

TL;DR

Sharon Zachary was convicted of murdering millionaire Robert Rogers over financial greed and embezzlement.

00:00:05
the murder of an eccentric millionaire
00:00:08
was not entirely a surprise
00:00:11
he flaunted his wealth and cared little
00:00:13
about personal security
00:00:15
the evidence clearly indicated robbery
00:00:18
but investigators wondered
00:00:20
if there was more

00:00:50
battle creek michigan is home to one of
00:00:53
the largest breakfast food makers in the
00:00:55
world
00:00:56
some call it cereal city
00:00:59
eighty-year-old robert rogers lived his
00:01:02
entire life in battle creek
00:01:04
through some real estate investments and
00:01:06
his ownership of a small trucking
00:01:08
business he was a millionaire many times
00:01:10
over he was a tough old bird he never
00:01:13
pulled any punches he was always a son
00:01:15
of a to me
00:01:17
rogers was stubborn too
00:01:19
he always carried large sums of money
00:01:21
and didn't care who knew it he would
00:01:24
joke that he would have
00:01:25
several thousand in this pocket several
00:01:28
thousand in a pants pocket and a couple
00:01:29
more thousand in his back pocket and he
00:01:31
generally did not surprisingly
00:01:34
rogers became a target for local drug
00:01:38
gangs and petty thieves
00:01:40
he was a victim several times of
00:01:41
robberies
00:01:43
they would take his money from him beat
00:01:44
him up his house had been broken into a
00:01:46
few times also
00:01:48
so
00:01:50
yeah it was a problem for him but he
00:01:52
didn't change his pattern it seemed like
00:01:54
he'd still carry the large sums of money
00:01:57
sharon zachary lived next door to rogers
00:01:59
and acted as his caretaker
00:02:02
sharon zachary had become almost like a
00:02:04
daughter to him she would take care of
00:02:05
him she would look in on him she would
00:02:08
come and visit him it worked out nicely
00:02:11
until the day sharon zachary stopped by
00:02:13
roger's home and found
00:02:16
that it had been broken into
00:02:18
what's the problem
00:02:29
when police arrived
00:02:31
they found robert rogers on the living
00:02:33
room floor he had been beaten to death
00:02:36
the person that committed his crime
00:02:38
did not want any possibility of mr
00:02:41
rogers to be alive to identify the
00:02:44
perpetrator
00:02:45
it looked like a piece of firewood was
00:02:47
used to break the rear sliding glass
00:02:49
door
00:02:51
drawers and closets had been ransacked
00:02:54
but if the motive was robbery the
00:02:57
perpetrator had not been
00:02:59
entirely successful
00:03:01
after the homicide they found 133
00:03:04
thousand dollars in cash hidden in the
00:03:05
house
00:03:06
which
00:03:07
that by itself uh
00:03:09
was such an attention grabber in this
00:03:11
community i mean that was the mo that
00:03:13
was one of the most unusual things about
00:03:14
the whole incident
00:03:16
the blood evidence revealed
00:03:18
rogers was beaten
00:03:20
at two different times
00:03:23
the victim sustained some injuries
00:03:26
and then had enough time to lay there
00:03:29
his wounds even started to heal and then
00:03:31
he was hit again that's bloodthirsty
00:03:34
that's cold
00:03:36
but to come back and he's not dead and
00:03:38
just beat him again to make sure he's
00:03:40
dead
00:03:43
that's cold
00:03:45
and the forensic evidence indicated the
00:03:47
killer approached the body yet a third
00:03:50
time
00:03:51
mr rogers when he was found his his arms
00:03:54
and actually his forearms and hands were
00:03:56
up in the air this phenomenon is called
00:03:59
rigor mortis
00:04:01
a stiffening of the body that occurs
00:04:03
several hours after death what this
00:04:05
would tell investigators about the time
00:04:07
period is that someone moved him
00:04:10
three or four hours after he was dead
00:04:12
this meant the killer was inside the
00:04:15
house for hours
00:04:17
[Music]
00:04:21
when millionaire robert rogers was found
00:04:23
beaten to death in his home
00:04:26
police began their investigation by
00:04:28
questioning family members and relatives
00:04:32
and they learned that rogers had an
00:04:34
ongoing squabble with his only son
00:04:37
donald
00:04:38
they were barely on speaking terms
00:04:41
donald told his father he was concerned
00:04:44
about his memory problems and wanted to
00:04:46
take control of his father's finances
00:04:49
rogers retaliated by cutting his son out
00:04:52
of his will
00:04:54
like i said he was a tough old bird yet
00:04:56
it was i could never do anything quite
00:04:58
good enough for him
00:04:59
[Music]
00:05:02
donald insisted
00:05:04
he didn't murder his father although he
00:05:06
admitted the two had serious problems
00:05:10
we were putting a roof on the
00:05:12
building out here
00:05:14
and
00:05:15
i guess i just wasn't doing it fast
00:05:17
enough
00:05:18
he he picked up a
00:05:20
thing of shingles and threw him at me
00:05:21
and i went right over the end of the
00:05:22
roof flat on my back knocking him off
00:05:26
the roof when a police officer hears
00:05:28
that there's that much animosity
00:05:30
and
00:05:31
and especially when they find out donald
00:05:33
had been cut out of the will out of a
00:05:35
fairly substantial estate that's got to
00:05:38
raise a lot of red flags for an
00:05:39
investigator
00:05:41
at robert rogers autopsy
00:05:44
the medical examiner determined the
00:05:46
cause of death was repeated blows to the
00:05:49
head with a blunt object this clearly
00:05:52
was a homicide with the number of blows
00:05:55
it appeared he had been struck 25 to 30
00:05:57
times i really can't speak to the state
00:05:59
of mind of the killer although it
00:06:01
certainly appears that they're enraged
00:06:03
but no murder weapon was found at the
00:06:06
scene
00:06:06
when we leave a crime scene without that
00:06:08
murder weapon
00:06:10
we have our work cut out for us in order
00:06:11
to put that suspect in the scene
00:06:15
the forensic evidence proved that
00:06:18
someone turned rogers over several hours
00:06:20
after death presumably to search his
00:06:23
pockets for money for investigators this
00:06:26
offered a possible clue how would
00:06:28
someone grab hold of him to turn him
00:06:30
over
00:06:31
and
00:06:33
we did notice that the belt had been
00:06:34
disturbed slightly
00:06:36
meaning that had been twisted a little
00:06:37
bit
00:06:38
and so we kind of thought that perhaps
00:06:40
maybe the suspect grabbed hold of the
00:06:41
belt
00:06:42
the belt was removed for forensic
00:06:44
testing
00:06:46
the initial examination found no
00:06:48
fingerprints
00:06:50
so they tried super glue fuming
00:06:53
it's just simply
00:06:55
heating up the super glue inside of an
00:06:57
enclosed chamber allowing that super
00:06:59
glue to vaporize and it has the physical
00:07:01
properties to want to adhere to the
00:07:03
fingerprint residuals left behind when
00:07:05
an item is touched
00:07:07
and it revealed a partial thumb print
00:07:10
about five inches from the buckle
00:07:13
the quality of that latent fingerprint
00:07:15
was very poor
00:07:16
again on a scale of one to ten
00:07:19
this laden fingerprint was about a two
00:07:21
to a three
00:07:23
this is the only belt that i've ever
00:07:25
obtained a fingerprint off of
00:07:28
investigators found their next clue
00:07:30
in the shards of broken glass there was
00:07:33
a beautiful footwear impression it was
00:07:36
maybe half of a half of a shoe or the
00:07:38
whole ball area of the shoe was present
00:07:40
this may have happened
00:07:42
when the killer stepped into the house
00:07:44
after breaking the glass
00:07:46
so it gave me a lot to work with with
00:07:49
regards to looking for accidental
00:07:51
characteristics or markings
00:07:53
using various databases analysts quickly
00:07:56
discovered the print was from the left
00:07:59
shoe of white pure10 brand tennis shoes
00:08:04
also at the crime scene
00:08:07
investigators found
00:08:08
a set of keys in the grass
00:08:11
next to one of the ponds on the 10-acre
00:08:14
property
00:08:15
the keys opened the doors to roger's
00:08:18
home
00:08:19
divers searched the ponds and a week
00:08:22
later found
00:08:23
a three-foot length of pipe
00:08:26
with a water sprinkler attachment at the
00:08:28
end
00:08:30
while there were no fingerprints or hair
00:08:32
on the pipe there was a tiny speck of
00:08:35
blood
00:08:36
which was sent for dna testing
00:08:39
how it got left there
00:08:41
has always been amazing to us because it
00:08:44
obviously had to have dried first
00:08:46
when it was found put in the pond
00:08:47
otherwise it would have washed off as
00:08:49
soon as we're thrown in the pond
00:08:51
to determine if this was the murder
00:08:53
weapon
00:08:54
investigators devised a test to see the
00:08:57
marks this pipe would make on a human
00:09:00
skull
00:09:01
at the time there weren't a lot of
00:09:03
different
00:09:04
surfaces or
00:09:06
forensically available
00:09:08
sources for for
00:09:10
reproducing human skin
00:09:13
and um
00:09:14
so
00:09:15
in this particular case i used just a
00:09:17
honeydew melon it had a smooth surface
00:09:19
and it was rounded it was approximately
00:09:22
the same size as a human head
00:09:26
she struck the melons from different
00:09:29
angles and with varying amounts of force
00:09:34
when i hit the test surface to try to
00:09:36
create as many different patterns as i
00:09:39
could
00:09:40
using that particular pipe
00:09:42
and then i compared them to the wound
00:09:44
pattern seen on the victim
00:09:46
scientists concluded
00:09:48
rogers was killed
00:09:50
with this instrument
00:09:52
why was this significant
00:09:54
the person
00:09:56
that had the keys may have dropped them
00:09:58
when they threw the murder weapon into
00:10:01
the pond
00:10:03
investigators wondered whether
00:10:06
the house keys belonged to the victim's
00:10:08
son
00:10:09
or
00:10:10
someone else
00:10:12
[Applause]
00:10:15
police now suspected that the robert
00:10:18
rogers crime scene was staged and that
00:10:21
the killer actually entered the home
00:10:24
with a set of house keys
00:10:26
now we call into question the whole idea
00:10:27
of the breaking entering we call in the
00:10:29
question whether this was a crime of
00:10:32
some outsider coming in and trying to
00:10:34
rob mr rogers or was it someone that had
00:10:36
access to his house access to mr rogers
00:10:40
investigators asked the victim's
00:10:42
estranged son donald
00:10:44
where he was at the time of his father's
00:10:47
murder
00:10:48
he said he had an alibi and offered to
00:10:50
take a polygraph test
00:10:52
the guy who gives it to me he says well
00:10:56
you passed the polygraph test i says
00:10:58
he's passed it he says yeah he says
00:11:00
you're a lousy liar
00:11:02
which is
00:11:03
that's cool
00:11:05
you know so investigators turned their
00:11:07
attention to sharon zachary who not only
00:11:10
lived next door to rogers but worked as
00:11:13
his caretaker
00:11:15
sharon said she was with a friend
00:11:18
shopping all day across town but
00:11:20
investigators discovered something
00:11:22
suspicious
00:11:24
she made several large expenditures in
00:11:27
the months leading up to roger's murder
00:11:30
she started spending money
00:11:33
from about january to around april it's
00:11:35
estimated about 65 thousand dollars was
00:11:37
spent on her own personal items
00:11:41
she bought a new car
00:11:43
a boat
00:11:44
and took her family on a caribbean
00:11:46
vacation
00:11:47
the expenses exceeded her family's
00:11:50
discretionary income
00:11:52
sharon was a part-time car salesperson
00:11:55
her husband was a sales representative
00:11:58
and investigators also learned
00:12:00
that rogers named sharon the sole
00:12:04
beneficiary of his multi-million dollar
00:12:07
estate
00:12:08
armed with the search warrant
00:12:11
investigators confiscated sharon's shoes
00:12:14
for analysis i believe we got over 20 or
00:12:17
30 pairs of shoes
00:12:19
into the laboratory
00:12:21
one pair caught michaud's attention a
00:12:24
pair of size six and a half tennis shoes
00:12:28
michoad dusted the shoes with powder
00:12:31
and applied a sticky sheet of acetate to
00:12:34
lift the print
00:12:37
all shoe impressions are distinctive
00:12:40
when a shoe is made and it comes out of
00:12:42
the factory it's exactly like every
00:12:44
other shoe made in that particular mold
00:12:47
and
00:12:48
as soon as you start walking on that
00:12:49
shoe you get microscopic scratches and
00:12:52
cuts and nicks in the bottom of the shoe
00:12:54
that makes that shoe different from all
00:12:56
others in the world
00:12:57
the shoe impression found on the glass
00:13:00
at the crime scene had various nicks and
00:13:03
scrape marks
00:13:05
interestingly sharon zachary's left
00:13:07
tennis shoe was the same size make and
00:13:11
model as the impression found at the
00:13:13
crime scene
00:13:15
and it also had the same nicks and
00:13:18
scrape marks the surface was so
00:13:21
clean it made just a beautiful very
00:13:24
detailed impression there was enough
00:13:26
accidental markings on the glass
00:13:29
that she was able to compare to the
00:13:31
shoes and find a positive match to one
00:13:33
shoe and only one shoe that made that
00:13:35
print
00:13:37
fingerprint analysts had a more
00:13:39
difficult time comparing sharon's prints
00:13:41
to the one found on the victim's belt
00:13:45
they had to study the ridge details and
00:13:48
figure out the direction of the print
00:13:50
and what part of which finger to compare
00:13:54
after three days
00:13:56
they discovered the print on the
00:13:58
victim's belt
00:14:00
was the side of sharon's left thumb
00:14:03
took a lot of hours looking at that
00:14:04
latent fingerprint this latent print
00:14:07
enough detail in it to make an
00:14:08
identification
00:14:10
was not a very high quality latent
00:14:12
fingerprint
00:14:14
when confronted with the forensic
00:14:15
evidence
00:14:16
sharon denied she was the killer she
00:14:19
insisted she had no motive
00:14:21
but the victim's financial record
00:14:23
suggested otherwise
00:14:26
in this case we found a large sum of
00:14:28
cash
00:14:29
disappearing out of his account
00:14:31
routinely
00:14:32
over the time from january to april
00:14:35
that money went right into sharon
00:14:38
zachary's account
00:14:40
sharon convinced him to give her a power
00:14:42
of attorney and sharon convinced him to
00:14:45
give her a checkbook
00:14:47
and then when she got onto some of his
00:14:50
checking accounts
00:14:51
and she just started using them as her
00:14:53
own
00:14:54
and
00:14:57
you know she got greedy and decided she
00:14:59
wanted it all
00:15:01
records indicated that sharon zachary
00:15:04
stole up to a hundred twenty thousand
00:15:06
dollars
00:15:07
and there was clear evidence that rogers
00:15:10
discovered the embezzlement sharon
00:15:13
zachary was helping herself to mr rogers
00:15:16
funds
00:15:17
and mr rogers apparently was not happy
00:15:19
about that and had
00:15:21
his power of attorney withdrawn to put a
00:15:23
stop to sharon zachary helping herself
00:15:26
to his money
00:15:27
sharon also found out that rogers
00:15:30
planned to remove her from his will
00:15:33
i believe sharon zachary was in a hurry
00:15:35
at that time to kill mr rogers before he
00:15:39
could make that change in his will
00:15:42
i believe greed is definitely what drove
00:15:44
sharon zachary
00:15:46
the dna test results of the blood found
00:15:49
on the metal pipe revealed the blood was
00:15:52
robert rogers
00:15:54
more proof that it was the murder weapon
00:15:58
when dna was found on the pipe it was
00:16:02
fairly spectacular and it's because we
00:16:03
really didn't think that the dna would
00:16:05
still be on the pipe two weeks later 31
00:16:08
year old sharon zachary was charged with
00:16:11
the murder
00:16:12
of robert rogers
00:16:14
mr rogers at one point in time he even
00:16:16
told an attorney
00:16:17
that she was the daughter he never had
00:16:20
it is ironic that robert rogers
00:16:24
attempting to seek sanctuary for himself
00:16:26
to seek protection from persons who
00:16:28
wanted to rob and hurt him trusted
00:16:31
sharon zachary and it's ironic that this
00:16:33
person in turn turned on him
00:16:36
and became the very thing that he was
00:16:38
trying to
00:16:39
guard against
00:16:42
i would never believe that something
00:16:43
like this could ever happen this is only
00:16:46
the kind of stuff that you read about
00:16:48
but
00:16:50
looking back i can see
00:16:52
that this can happen to anybody
00:16:56
sharon zachary and her family lived next
00:16:58
door to robert rogers
00:17:00
and the two became friends
00:17:03
roger's eyesight was failing
00:17:05
and sharon not only befriended him she
00:17:08
also helped by writing checks so he
00:17:11
could pay his bills
00:17:13
but prosecutors found evidence
00:17:15
that sharon was doing more than that
00:17:18
and was actually helping herself to some
00:17:21
of roger's money tens of thousands of it
00:17:25
well she got a sizable chunk in just the
00:17:27
little time that she was her and him
00:17:29
were
00:17:30
associated the trip to the caribbean for
00:17:33
her and all her family the speedboats
00:17:36
the vehicle
00:17:38
on the day of the murder
00:17:40
prosecutors believe sharon went to
00:17:42
roger's house intending to kill him
00:17:45
before he could change his will and
00:17:48
remove her as beneficiary
00:17:52
prosecutors think sharon grabbed a piece
00:17:54
of pipe from roger's yard used her keys
00:17:58
to gain entrance and struck him over the
00:18:00
head repeatedly
00:18:05
as he lay unconscious
00:18:07
she spent hours searching the house for
00:18:10
the money he had stashed away
00:18:13
if she did find money
00:18:15
she didn't find it all
00:18:18
at some point
00:18:19
she must have realized he wasn't dead
00:18:22
and she struck him again
00:18:27
once again
00:18:28
she searched the house for money
00:18:32
before leaving the house
00:18:34
sharon turned roger's body over to
00:18:36
search his pockets leaving her partial
00:18:39
thumb print
00:18:41
on his leather belt
00:18:42
[Music]
00:18:44
to make it look like a robbery
00:18:46
she threw a piece of firewood through
00:18:48
the sliding glass door
00:18:53
but she stepped on a shard of glass
00:18:56
leaving a clear image of her shoe
00:18:59
impression
00:19:02
on her way back home
00:19:03
sharon tried to dispose of the pipe but
00:19:06
dropped her keys nearby
00:19:08
a mistake
00:19:09
which led to the discovery of the murder
00:19:12
weapon
00:19:13
sharon zachary after committing this
00:19:15
crime
00:19:16
established
00:19:18
an alibi to be
00:19:20
seen in different locations
00:19:22
at a point far away from her home
00:19:25
to try to establish that she couldn't
00:19:27
have committed a crime by and having not
00:19:28
been there
00:19:29
we always wondered if it was sharon
00:19:31
zachary by herself or sharon zachary
00:19:32
with others
00:19:35
we don't know
00:19:36
there may have been there may not have
00:19:38
been we have no clue we have no evidence
00:19:41
at the trial
00:19:42
sharon zachary insisted she was innocent
00:19:46
but the forensic evidence told a
00:19:48
different story
00:19:50
she was convicted
00:19:52
of first-degree murder
00:19:54
and sentenced to life in prison
00:19:57
i'm glad they got her
00:19:59
but i don't want to sound like i'm
00:20:02
out for vengeance
00:20:04
although if they wanted to kill her i'd
00:20:06
volunteer
00:20:08
it was the shoe impression on a shard of
00:20:11
glass
00:20:12
and the partial thumb print on the
00:20:15
leather belt
00:20:17
that solved the case in my 12 years of
00:20:20
doing late print work
00:20:22
this case ranks right up near the top
00:20:24
if not the most difficult latent
00:20:27
fingerprint that i've had to identify
00:20:29
so it was very
00:20:31
very satisfying case for me to be
00:20:34
involved with criminals
00:20:36
always seem to make mistakes i believe
00:20:38
the mistakes in this case by sharon
00:20:40
zachary were because she was fighting
00:20:42
the clock this trial would have never
00:20:44
happened without the forensics
00:20:47
we had a clear motive money
00:20:50
but to show that she was there
00:20:53
to show that the print the shoe print
00:20:55
the finger the thumbprint
00:20:57
where from her
00:21:00
would have not had we wouldn't had a
00:21:01
case
