Forensic Files - Season 5, Episode 9 - Killigraphy - Full Episode

November 11, 2021 / 22:34

This episode covers the murder case of Virginia Ridley, the suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, and the trial of her husband Alvin Ridley.

Virginia Ridley was found dead in her home in Ringgold, Georgia, in October 1997. Medical examiners ruled her death a homicide, raising questions about her husband Alvin Ridley's actions leading up to her death. Alvin had a troubled reputation in the community, known for his confrontational nature and legal disputes.

Virginia's sister, Trixie Lacroix, expressed concerns about Alvin's control over Virginia, noting that she had not seen her sister in 30 years. After Virginia's death, investigators found evidence of possible strangulation and a lack of medical care, prompting suspicions about Alvin's involvement.

During the trial, Alvin maintained his innocence, claiming Virginia suffered from epilepsy and died from a seizure. The defense argued that bruising on Virginia's neck was due to improper autopsy procedures rather than foul play.

Ultimately, Alvin Ridley was acquitted of all charges after the jury deliberated for two hours. The episode highlights the complexities of the case and the role of forensic evidence in the trial.

TL;DR

Virginia Ridley was found dead, her husband Alvin was acquitted of murder amid suspicions of foul play and epilepsy-related death.

life is simple here

other
00:01:20
alvin ridley was a well-known figure in
00:01:22
ringgold
00:01:23
at one time he ran the town's only
00:01:26
television repair shop
00:01:29
in 1966 he married 18 year old virginia
00:01:32
hickey and almost immediately virginia
00:01:35
cut off all contact with her family
00:01:39
alvin said it was because her family was
00:01:41
too intrusive
00:01:42
virginia's sister trixie lacroix says
00:01:45
alvin forced virginia to stay away from
00:01:48
her family i sent them an invitation to
00:01:51
every wedding
00:01:52
every death
00:01:55
every birthing
00:01:56
in our family
00:01:58
to no avail nothing was ever
00:02:00
acknowledged nothing
00:02:01
my father's death
00:02:03
my father went to his grave
00:02:05
after making every effort possible to
00:02:08
try to see his daughter
00:02:11
never having seen her after
00:02:15
she
00:02:17
got you know mixed up with mr ridley
00:02:20
alvin ridley had a reputation in
00:02:23
ringgold and it wasn't a particularly
00:02:26
good one
00:02:27
he was known for filing lawsuits against
00:02:30
anyone he felt had wronged him and in
00:02:32
the process he had made a lot of enemies
00:02:35
he's
00:02:36
always accusing he's
00:02:38
very suspicious he trusts
00:02:41
no one
00:02:42
really
00:02:44
and
00:02:46
so that
00:02:47
obviously put him at odds with a lot of
00:02:50
people city government on licensing
00:02:52
issues
00:02:54
the city chief of police of course
00:02:57
the the county sheriff
00:02:59
in 1984 after a minor traffic accident
00:03:02
he filed a series of legal actions and
00:03:05
got hit with a countersuit
00:03:07
he lost and had to forfeit his van as
00:03:11
payment
00:03:12
july 1984
00:03:14
they
00:03:15
seized my van without due process a law
00:03:18
about a fair hearing
00:03:20
and it
00:03:21
uh somewhere and i returned all my
00:03:24
customers and friends and
00:03:26
suppliers and
00:03:27
dealers and creditors against me and
00:03:29
they wanted to send me no more products
00:03:31
so it forced me out of bed
00:03:33
the loss of his van meant the failure of
00:03:36
his television repair business which
00:03:38
started a further downward spiral
00:03:42
he was known as crazy alvin by the
00:03:44
town's people
00:03:46
his reputation was not helped by the
00:03:48
fact that no one had seen alvin's wife
00:03:51
virginia not even her family in the 30
00:03:54
years she was married to alvin
00:03:57
what i couldn't understand if she was
00:03:59
mad at her family
00:04:00
why did she not go to the door for
00:04:02
friends
00:04:04
so that kind of made me
00:04:06
believe that maybe possibly he had
00:04:09
given her instructions not to
00:04:11
he got angry
00:04:13
at her
00:04:14
maybe i told her not to
00:04:16
and i the thought crossed my mind maybe
00:04:19
she was being kept captive
00:04:22
what went on in alvin ridley's secluded
00:04:25
house
00:04:26
was the subject of town gossip
00:04:29
but on the morning of october 4
00:04:31
1997
00:04:32
it became news
00:04:34
virginia ridley was found dead in her
00:04:37
bed
00:04:38
fully clothed
00:04:40
by the time medical personnel arrived
00:04:42
rigor mortis had set in an indication
00:04:45
that she had been dead for at least
00:04:47
eight hours
00:04:48
trixie lecroy was asked to identify her
00:04:52
sister's body
00:04:53
i could not do it i could not do it
00:04:57
so my sister's husband was with her
00:04:59
and she the two of them went in
00:05:02
and she
00:05:03
came back out and she said
00:05:06
you know i'm so glad you didn't go in it
00:05:09
was not a pretty sight
00:05:12
she said
00:05:13
her hair has not been combed in years
00:05:17
it's just
00:05:18
it has so many knots in it
00:05:21
it has not been combed in years
00:05:25
she can't weigh
00:05:27
90 pounds
00:05:29
she's skin stretched over bone
00:05:33
new rumors began to surface in ringgold
00:05:36
georgia about alvin ridley and the role
00:05:39
he might have played
00:05:41
in his wife's death
00:05:45
in october of 1997 virginia ridley was
00:05:48
found dead in a house with no phone no
00:05:52
running water and infested with ants and
00:05:55
cockroaches
00:05:57
she had been dead
00:05:59
at least eight hours before medical
00:06:01
personnel arrived which prompted
00:06:03
questions why had it taken her husband
00:06:06
alvin so long to call for help
00:06:10
virginia's sister trixie lacroix
00:06:12
believes if he had called earlier
00:06:15
her sister might still be alive
00:06:18
there's no doubt in my mind that this
00:06:20
man was responsible directly or
00:06:23
indirectly from my sister's death you
00:06:25
cannot convince me of anything else
00:06:33
investigators traced alvin's steps on
00:06:35
the morning of virginia's death
00:06:39
alvin said that when he woke up his wife
00:06:41
was dead he got into his truck and went
00:06:44
looking for a telephone
00:06:47
he admitted driving by the local fire
00:06:49
station which could have provided
00:06:51
emergency assistance
00:06:57
instead he continued driving to a
00:06:59
telephone outside of town
00:07:06
he did not call the local hospital 10
00:07:08
minutes away instead
00:07:11
he called a hospital in chattanooga
00:07:13
tennessee
00:07:14
some 30 miles away
00:07:17
they told him to dial 9-1-1 for local
00:07:20
assistance which he finally did
00:07:22
leaving this message
00:07:25
9-1-1 where's your emergency
00:07:27
134 inman street what's the problem i
00:07:31
think my wife passed out
00:07:33
134 inman street yeah
00:07:36
is she breathing
00:07:38
i don't think so it's behind the steel
00:07:40
plant uh
00:07:41
i'm calling from a pay phone booth
00:07:44
you don't have a phone at your house
00:07:46
there's no phone
00:07:48
there's no phone there
00:07:49
investigators were struck by the lack of
00:07:52
concern in alvin's voice it was unlike
00:07:55
most emergency calls they received
00:07:58
the initial examination of virginia's
00:08:00
body was done by the local coroner
00:08:03
bonita hollander
00:08:05
in virginia's eyes the coroner found
00:08:08
particular hemorrhages which are broken
00:08:11
blood vessels often seen in cases of
00:08:13
strangulation or smothering deaths
00:08:17
descendant is a female in her late 40s
00:08:20
decedent is malnourished kill
00:08:22
hemorrhages around her eyes
00:08:24
the next day
00:08:25
a full autopsy was performed
00:08:28
the medical examiner dr frederick
00:08:30
hellman found something not noted during
00:08:33
the initial examination deep bruising on
00:08:37
the muscles of virginia ridley's neck
00:08:39
another possible indication of
00:08:41
strangulation
00:08:43
virginia ridley's death was ruled a
00:08:46
homicide
00:08:47
and her husband alvin was charged with
00:08:50
murder
00:08:51
to those in ringgold who knew alvin
00:08:54
ridley as crazy alvin the news came as
00:08:57
no surprise
00:08:58
everybody thought he killed his wife
00:09:00
back in the 60s
00:09:02
or the early 70s
00:09:04
and there was even talk that he killed
00:09:06
her long long time ago
00:09:09
and
00:09:11
and then one day he calls 9-1-1 and
00:09:14
there is a
00:09:16
recently dead body
00:09:18
in the bed
00:09:20
and that's his wife
00:09:23
because of the particular hemorrhages in
00:09:25
the eyes and the condition of the body
00:09:28
the coroner suspected foul play
00:09:32
and police could find no indication that
00:09:35
virginia had received routine medical
00:09:37
care in the recent past i think they
00:09:40
checked the 50 to 100 mile radius
00:09:43
no doctor
00:09:45
no physician
00:09:47
no pharmacy
00:09:49
no hospital
00:09:52
this girl had not been anywhere in 30
00:09:55
years
00:09:57
the town of ringgold was gearing up for
00:10:00
the biggest trial in its history
00:10:02
and investigators were in for another
00:10:05
surprise
00:10:06
when alvin ridley gave his explanation
00:10:10
for how his wife died
00:10:15
trixie lacroix regularly visits the
00:10:17
grave of her sister
00:10:19
a woman with whom she has more contact
00:10:21
in death
00:10:23
than she did in life
00:10:25
that's because trixie and the rest of
00:10:27
her family hadn't seen virginia at all
00:10:30
during the 30 years she lived with alvin
00:10:32
ridley the man now accused of her murder
00:10:36
i will say this that if there is a god
00:10:38
almighty above
00:10:40
if there is a day of reckoning for all
00:10:43
of us
00:10:44
which i believe there is
00:10:47
i would not want to be him
00:10:49
alvin ridley steadfastly maintained his
00:10:52
innocence
00:10:53
i felt terrible
00:10:55
sad
00:10:57
depressed because i lost a loved one i
00:11:00
cared a lot about
00:11:02
he's married 30 years
00:11:05
sweet happy christian married life
00:11:07
i never hit her time she never hit me at
00:11:10
times i was married of course we got in
00:11:12
a few arguments because off
00:11:15
alvin's defense attorney mccracken
00:11:18
poston knew that the case against his
00:11:20
client wouldn't be easy
00:11:22
alvin's reputation and behavior after
00:11:25
his wife's death made his defense
00:11:28
a unique challenge
00:11:30
several members of my family just said
00:11:32
he's crazy he's capable of anything
00:11:40
i was about to get married and
00:11:42
several members of my wife's family were
00:11:45
fearful of
00:11:46
my getting involved
00:11:48
in defending alvin
00:11:51
alvin had developed
00:11:53
for himself
00:11:54
somewhat of a reputation as a panhandler
00:11:57
or a con man
00:12:01
poston visited alvin's run-down house on
00:12:04
the edge of town
00:12:06
and amid the cockroaches and broken
00:12:09
windows
00:12:10
saw something he hadn't expected
00:12:13
the walls of the house were plastered
00:12:16
with handwritten notes
00:12:19
some were letters to congress that alvin
00:12:21
had written but i began to notice a
00:12:23
distinct handwriting
00:12:26
that i knew was not alvin's
00:12:28
and i asked him
00:12:30
who wrote this
00:12:32
he said well virginia did
00:12:34
and i grabbed a piece off the wall and
00:12:37
you know i said alvin this will save you
00:12:39
we've i've got to have all of this
00:12:42
there were hundreds of notes
00:12:44
all apparently in virginia ridley's
00:12:46
handwriting
00:12:48
some dealt with everyday matters like
00:12:50
what she had watched on television
00:12:54
in notebooks entire chapters of the
00:12:57
bible had been transcribed repeatedly
00:13:00
but most
00:13:01
were love letters
00:13:03
to alvin
00:13:05
ken poston did not believe the love
00:13:07
notes were the writings of a woman being
00:13:09
held against her will
00:13:11
but could he prove to a jury that
00:13:14
virginia had actually written the notes
00:13:18
brian carney a forensic document
00:13:20
examiner analyzed the letters
00:13:23
carney had little to work with but he
00:13:25
did have some known signatures of
00:13:28
virginia ridley on some official
00:13:29
documents written years earlier and he
00:13:32
found a number of unmistakable
00:13:35
similarities
00:13:37
the obvious features that you can see
00:13:39
just at a glance are for example the
00:13:42
three eyes in virginia's are very tall
00:13:45
comparatively speaking their lower case
00:13:47
letter forms cursive writing
00:13:50
but the if you were to draw
00:13:52
a horizontal line right across the top
00:13:55
of this eye all the way to the end of
00:13:56
the name
00:13:57
you would see that all of the eyes are
00:13:59
taller than the other internal letter
00:14:01
forms and you scan down through the
00:14:04
series in comparison of question to
00:14:06
known
00:14:07
you can clearly see that this eye
00:14:09
feature
00:14:11
is a habitual writing movement of this
00:14:13
this particular writer and i was able to
00:14:15
state
00:14:16
that there were strong indications that
00:14:18
virginia was the writer of the
00:14:20
comparable
00:14:22
entries so what we're essentially
00:14:24
talking about is those letter
00:14:25
combinations that have
00:14:28
that are the same as the name virginia
00:14:31
and the signatures that have the given
00:14:33
name virginia
00:14:35
virginia's family told investigators
00:14:38
that virginia suffered from epilepsy as
00:14:41
a child
00:14:42
epilepsy is a neurological condition in
00:14:45
which uncontrolled electrical charges
00:14:48
from the cerebral cortex can result in
00:14:51
violent seizures and convulsions
00:14:54
according to her writings
00:14:56
virginia had stopped taking her epilepsy
00:14:58
medication years earlier
00:15:01
relying instead on her faith in god to
00:15:04
heal her
00:15:05
the defense consulted dr braxton
00:15:08
wanamaker who is a neurologist
00:15:10
he said the particular hemorrhages
00:15:13
around virginia's eyes were consistent
00:15:16
with what is called
00:15:17
sudden death epilepsy
00:15:20
dr wanamaker says sudden death epilepsy
00:15:23
occurs in patients who stop taking their
00:15:26
medication or haven't been properly
00:15:28
diagnosed
00:15:29
i've had other patients who are sleeping
00:15:32
with their spouses
00:15:33
and
00:15:34
they wake up and find that their spouse
00:15:36
is dead
00:15:37
so people may or may not witness the
00:15:40
seizure
00:15:41
and there are some of us who are not
00:15:44
certain that all of these deaths are
00:15:45
associated with seizure per se
00:15:49
but may have some epileptic
00:15:51
activity in the brain that changes heart
00:15:54
rhythms or changes respiratory
00:15:57
mechanisms such that people die from
00:16:00
that alvin ridley said his wife had
00:16:02
seizures on a regular basis he said she
00:16:06
had a particularly bad one on the night
00:16:09
before she died after she had the season
00:16:11
got over it i said
00:16:14
are you going to be all right
00:16:16
and she smiled at me says yes honey i
00:16:18
love you
00:16:22
so
00:16:23
you know
00:16:24
i
00:16:24
thought she'd be all right so i went off
00:16:26
to sleep
00:16:30
but according to alvin
00:16:31
she was dead when he tried to wake her
00:16:33
the next day
00:16:36
alvin said the seizures were the reason
00:16:38
no one had seen virginia in all those
00:16:41
years
00:16:42
she was so embarrassed about her
00:16:44
seizures she wanted no contact with the
00:16:47
outside world not even her family
00:16:50
[Music]
00:16:51
but the defense had one last hurdle
00:16:54
how to explain the bruising on virginia
00:16:57
ridley's neck
00:16:59
evidence that the medical examiner said
00:17:02
pointed to homicide
00:17:04

00:17:07
judge ralph van pelt presided over alvin
00:17:10
ridley's murder trial and immediately
00:17:12
had him evaluated by a psychologist
00:17:15
he certainly probably would have
00:17:16
qualified i think for mentally ill under
00:17:19
the georgia statute but that's only if
00:17:20
you're found guilty but mentally ill
00:17:23
these the psych the report indicated
00:17:26
that he was competent to stand trial
00:17:28
could assist his attorney in a defense
00:17:30
and knew right from wrong
00:17:32
at the trial
00:17:33
alvin's defense team needed to refute
00:17:36
the prosecution's contention that the
00:17:38
bruises on virginia ridley's neck were
00:17:41
evidence of strangulation
00:17:43
dr robert goldberg a forensic
00:17:46
pathologist hired by the defense
00:17:48
discovered that an employee in the
00:17:50
coroner's office had drawn blood from
00:17:52
virginia ridley's neck for a toxicology
00:17:55
test which was a complete break from
00:17:58
standard procedure
00:18:00
this is highly irregular
00:18:02
and is something that procedurally
00:18:06
is an error
00:18:08
when the autopsy was conducted the next
00:18:11
day
00:18:12
dr goldberg believes the needle marks
00:18:14
had developed into bruises which are
00:18:17
known as artifact a term for any changes
00:18:21
in the body caused by postmortem
00:18:23
evaluation
00:18:25
i think it would be absolutely essential
00:18:27
that any coroner
00:18:29
have some autopsy experience
00:18:32
even if they don't conduct the autopsy
00:18:34
themselves
00:18:35
they should know the appropriate
00:18:37
procedures
00:18:39
it was clear to me that this coroner was
00:18:41
way
00:18:42
way out of
00:18:43
line
00:18:44
with appropriate procedure
00:18:47
in georgia the coroner is an elected
00:18:49
official
00:18:50
and this was the first suspicious death
00:18:53
thanita hollander investigated after her
00:18:55
election
00:18:57
alvin's attorney believes that the
00:18:59
coroner's inexperience and her own
00:19:02
personal suspicions about alvin ridley
00:19:05
affected her judgment
00:19:07
when that body
00:19:08
went to the state crime lab
00:19:11
and she accompanied it
00:19:13
she reported when they arrived this
00:19:15
woman has been locked in a basement for
00:19:17
30 years
00:19:20
the state
00:19:22
pathologist that conducted the autopsy
00:19:28
i think that was an improper
00:19:30
suggestion
00:19:32
based on no fact
00:19:35
that made it easy for him to conclude
00:19:38
homicide by asphyxiation
00:19:41
alvin ridley took the stand in his own
00:19:44
defense
00:19:45
he said he drove by the local fire
00:19:47
station after his wife's death because
00:19:49
he had had a prior run-in with the
00:19:51
people there and didn't trust them
00:19:54
he said he called the hospital in
00:19:56
chattanooga because that's where he'd
00:19:59
taken his mother years earlier it was
00:20:01
the only facility he was familiar with
00:20:05
after two hours of deliberation
00:20:07
the jury acquitted alvin ridley of all
00:20:11
charges
00:20:13
he claims
00:20:14
it was his wife virginia
00:20:17
testifying through her letters
00:20:19
who kept him from a life behind bars
00:20:23
i felt like my wife actually and the
00:20:25
lord saved me
00:20:28
and ended here
00:20:30
alvin ridley still lives in the same
00:20:33
dilapidated home on the outskirts of
00:20:36
town
00:20:37
and still talks about restarting his
00:20:39
television repair business
00:20:42
he visits virginia's grave regularly
00:20:45
a privilege he enjoys because of the
00:20:48
role science played
00:20:50
improving his innocence
00:20:53
i guess he was a strange man i
00:20:55
understood him to be a hermit
00:20:57
i understood him not to have the social
00:20:59
skills
00:21:02
that the rest of society has
00:21:06
and unfortunately i believe that had a
00:21:08
great deal to do with the fact that he
00:21:10
was tried
00:21:13
fortunately the truth went out
00:21:16
and he was acquitted
00:21:19
good lord
00:21:20
if it hadn't been for this scientific
00:21:23
evidence
00:21:25
the risk was so high
00:21:26
that the local
00:21:28
community prejudices and biases
00:21:31
about alvin ridley and his
00:21:34
years and years of strange behavior
00:21:37
would have been difficult to overcome
00:21:40
i think it's a
00:21:42
story about how the system works
00:21:44
that someone has their right to make the
00:21:47
state prove that they're guilty prove
00:21:49
that they did it beyond a reasonable
00:21:50
doubt
00:21:51
and a fellow
00:21:53
with just very modest resources was able
00:21:55
to come in and
00:21:58
prove that he was not guilty established
00:22:00
that he was not guilty
