Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 10, Episode 6 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 42:41

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers three main stories: the disappearance of Monica Rizzo, the wrongful conviction of Frederick Young, and a haunted house lawsuit in England.

The first segment focuses on the case of Monica Rizzo, who vanished in San Antonio, Texas. An anonymous call led police to her husband Leonard Rizzo, who was later found to have human bones buried in their backyard. Despite evidence suggesting foul play, Leonard maintains his innocence.

The second story highlights Frederick Young, who claims he was wrongfully convicted of armed robbery due to mistaken identity involving his identical twin brother Cedric. Frederick's conviction has led to a lengthy prison sentence, while he insists on his innocence and seeks justice.

The final segment discusses a couple in England, the Smiths, who are suing the previous owners of their home, claiming it is haunted. The former owners deny any supernatural occurrences, leading to a legal battle over the house's alleged haunted reputation.

Each story presents themes of mystery, injustice, and the supernatural, leaving viewers to ponder the truth behind these unsettling cases.

TL;DR

Monica Rizzo's disappearance, Frederick Young's wrongful conviction, and a haunted house lawsuit unfold in this episode of Unsolved Mysteries.

when Monica Rizzo disappeared an
00:00:11
anonymous phone call led the police to
00:00:13
her house but what investigators found
00:00:16
buried in the backyard was beyond
00:00:18
anything they ever expected his Bloods
00:00:22
thicker than water
00:00:23
not if you ask convicted felon Fredrik
00:00:26
Yanni he's spending the rest of his life
00:00:29
in prison for crimes he insists he did
00:00:31
not commit so who's the real culprit
00:00:34
according to Fredrik none other than his
00:00:36
identical twin brother
00:00:38
Cedric what would you do if someone sold
00:00:42
you a house haunted by some very nasty
00:00:44
ghosts this family in England decided to
00:00:47
take the former owners to court
00:00:51
by all accounts Sharon Kinney was a
00:00:53
woman who knew what she wanted what she
00:00:55
wanted most was sex and money but what
00:00:59
she killed for the big payoff police say
00:01:02
a trail of victims leaves little doubt

hello gonna help you just a San Antonio
00:02:00

00:02:02
okay
00:02:04
a woman Monica reso was murdered ain't
00:02:08
who killed her sir she was murdered by
00:02:10
her husband Leonard Rizzo you could find
00:02:13
her bones in the backyard of their house
00:02:14
there's a skull and some other bones too
00:02:20
it sounded like a gruesome prank but the
00:02:24
police in San Antonio Texas wasted no
00:02:26
time checking it out they intended to
00:02:29
question Monica Rizzo's husband Leonard
00:02:31
but that would have to wait just at the
00:02:34
moment the detectives arrived RZA was
00:02:36
having some sort of a seizure mr. Rizzo
00:02:38
the dead how long has he been like this
00:02:41
I don't know I was upstairs for a while
00:02:43
mr. Rizzo at first the detectives
00:02:46
suspected a drug overdose
00:02:47
they were later told it was one of a
00:02:49
series of seizures Rizzo had recently
00:02:51
been suffering with Leonard Rizzo on his
00:02:56
way to the hospital the police
00:02:57
questioned his older son he lived across
00:03:00
town he said he hadn't seen his mother
00:03:02
for about a week
00:03:03
you know when she's expected back no you
00:03:07
mind if we have a look around no that's
00:03:09
that's fine
00:03:13
[Music]
00:03:14
Monica's clothes still hung in the
00:03:16
closet her car was parked in the
00:03:19
driveway nothing seemed to be missing
00:03:21
except Monica Rizal next the backyard
00:03:27
the detectives did find boulders but
00:03:31
they clearly belong to some kind of an
00:03:32
animal the anonymous caller appeared to
00:03:35
be wrong there was no sign of a body no
00:03:38
clues to murder
00:03:41
[Music]
00:03:43
where was Monica Rizal for her
00:03:47
co-workers at a government office in San
00:03:48
Antonio the mystery had begun one month
00:03:51
earlier on May 5th 1997 that day
00:03:56
Monica Rizzo left her desk apparently on
00:03:58
her way to lunch she walked out without
00:04:00
even taking her purse after eight days
00:04:06
of repeated phone calls Monica's boss
00:04:08
finally reached her at home she told me
00:04:12
that that she wasn't feeling very well
00:04:14
and she would she want to let me know
00:04:17
that she was going to be out the rest of
00:04:20
that week and she would be returning to
00:04:23
work Monday of the following week which
00:04:26
would have been May the 19th but the
00:04:30
19th came and went
00:04:31
Monica Rizzo never returned to work
00:04:34
Leonard Rizzo claims that a few days
00:04:37
later he simply woke up one morning and
00:04:39
she was gone he never reported it to the
00:04:42
police I was very confused I was they
00:04:46
made no sense although I felt very close
00:04:48
there was no reason for me to believe
00:04:50
she wouldn't be coming back where she'd
00:04:52
gone I just I have faith in her I just
00:04:57
chose to wait it's just the San Antonio
00:05:08
Police yesterday is gonna help you
00:05:13
remember you need to go back and search
00:05:16
their house again
00:05:17
Leonard Rizzo killed his wife the bones
00:05:20
are in the backyard they're under a
00:05:21
pilot tires by the fence look under
00:05:24
those tires again the police responded
00:05:28
out there along with some homicide
00:05:30
detectives that went out there and took
00:05:32
a look and they did find some what
00:05:34
appear to be human bones
00:05:37
[Music]
00:05:43
detectives collected a skull a number of
00:05:46
bone fragments and even a bag filled
00:05:48
with what appeared to be human flesh
00:05:50
Leonard Rizzo had some explaining to do
00:05:55
they'd go for Hickman Center in my yard
00:05:57
or an absolute mystery to me is his
00:06:01
digging mystery is my wife's
00:06:03
disappearance to me there's to me
00:06:08
there's no question to me on someone
00:06:11
who's trying to draw attention from
00:06:13
themselves someone is doing this to me
00:06:17
inside the hubs
00:06:18
police found potential evidence of a
00:06:20
violent struggle several sections have
00:06:23
bashed or blood spattered drywall
00:06:26
basically I just got very very emotional
00:06:29
about missing her and attempted to beat
00:06:33
up the house I guess you could say the
00:06:36
house won I got the worst end of it
00:06:40
detectives also learned that Monica's
00:06:43
co-workers had been so worried about her
00:06:44
that on one occasion they asked the
00:06:46
police to check on her
00:06:48
the officer who responded believed there
00:06:51
was reason for concern something wrong
00:06:54
Monica Risa yes I'm with the San Antonio
00:06:57
Police some people your office asked
00:07:00
that I stopped by are you okay yes I'm
00:07:03
fine it looks like there's some bruising
00:07:06
on your face no I just felt that I'm
00:07:09
fine
00:07:10
as your husband here yes but he's very
00:07:13
sick I've been take care of him
00:07:16
you sure you're okay yes
00:07:24
there was no domestic abuse there was no
00:07:27
domestic violence my wife and I deeply
00:07:30
in love we are deeply in love
00:07:32
we've been married 26 years going on 27
00:07:37
years now it's a long time police
00:07:43
brought in a team of archaeologists from
00:07:44
the University of Texas to excavate the
00:07:47
site we literally crawled across this
00:07:50
area using our trials and moving the
00:07:53
roots and the moving the grass blades
00:07:55
and looking down beneath the grass and
00:07:57
every time we found a bone fragment or
00:07:59
something the police department
00:08:00
considered might be evidence we put an
00:08:03
orange pin flag out before they were
00:08:05
done the yard was dotted with dozens of
00:08:08
orange flags when you find bone in an
00:08:11
old archeological site the bone is very
00:08:13
dry this bone still had a greasy feel to
00:08:16
it so we knew it had not been there very
00:08:20
long but at the same time it had been
00:08:22
there more than a week or a couple weeks
00:08:24
there was no soft tissue still attached
00:08:26
to it there were bones everywhere even
00:08:30
inside the barbecue grill
00:08:36
I picked it up and looked at it and I
00:08:38
was sure it was a human hand bone
00:08:40
because it has a distinctive shape
00:08:41
although it's very small maybe a half an
00:08:43
inch or so we got the archaeologists
00:08:47
sifted the ashes finding more bones all
00:08:49
of them from human hands sure no one is
00:08:52
sure how many hands over eight days dr.
00:08:57
Hart and his team collected more than
00:08:59
200 bone fragments most of them had been
00:09:02
chopped into pieces less than three
00:09:04
inches long what do you think could
00:09:06
cause that we felt it was some such kind
00:09:11
of machine some type of chipper shredder
00:09:13
has been discussed quite a bit it's the
00:09:15
only machine that we can come up that we
00:09:17
can come up with that could possibly
00:09:19
account for this type of breakage you
00:09:22
wouldn't get it with a saw you wouldn't
00:09:24
get it with a knife you wouldn't get it
00:09:26
with a lawnmower we can't think of
00:09:30
anything else that would break up bone
00:09:32
like this once again police had
00:09:35
questions for Leonard Rizzo I have never
00:09:38
even operated a wood chipper I have
00:09:40
never running rented anything in a
00:09:42
rental store other than a car dolly
00:09:46
maybe a trailer no I did do not did not
00:09:53
operate a wood chipper never have the
00:09:57
case of Monica Rizzo at this point is
00:09:59
being investigated as a missing persons
00:10:01
case the human remains they were found
00:10:04
in the backyard of Leonard Rizzo we have
00:10:07
no knowledge how those people died we
00:10:10
don't know the cause of death we haven't
00:10:12
established that a crime did in fact
00:10:14
occur
00:10:16
whatever happened in his backyard and
00:10:18
whoever it happened to Leonard Rizzo
00:10:21
continues to insist he had nothing to do
00:10:24
with it those bone fragments and such
00:10:30
where they came from I don't know how
00:10:33
they got there I don't know and I
00:10:35
adamantly did not give him or anyone
00:10:37
else

they look so much alike even their
00:11:04
mother can't tell them apart is it
00:11:06
possible the police made the same
00:11:08
mistake
00:11:08
the final appeal of Frederick young June
00:11:24
9th 1993 midnight a motel in Greensboro
00:11:28
North Carolina the five young people
00:11:45
gathered in the room never knew what hit
00:11:47
them the heavily armed robbers took cash
00:11:51
and jewelry it was all over in a matter
00:11:54
of minutes
00:11:57
based on eyewitness testimony from one
00:12:00
of the victims police arrested two men
00:12:02
one was 22-year old Frederick young he
00:12:06
was convicted of the motel robbery as
00:12:08
well as two others at same night he will
00:12:11
be in prison until his 91st birthday
00:12:14
[Music]
00:12:16
rust assured that every hour of every
00:12:19
day of every one of those years
00:12:20
Frederick young will like many other
00:12:22
convicted felons be claiming his
00:12:23
innocence but Young's claim may hold
00:12:26
more water than most
00:12:27
he says his is a case of mistaken
00:12:29
identity incredibly Frederick insists
00:12:32
that the real robber was his brother
00:12:34
in fact his identical twin brother
00:12:36
Cedric young that accusation has forced
00:12:39
her mother to make an impossible choice
00:12:41
which son to support and indeed she
00:12:44
supports Fred the son in prison
00:12:51
we were very close closer than anybody
00:12:55
dressed the like all the time did mostly
00:12:59
everything ago it was a bond you know
00:13:02
I'm saying much greater than any bond
00:13:04
you know like friends or anything or any
00:13:08
other relative in the family this close
00:13:13
cédric young or said was born four
00:13:16
minutes before Fred on December 29th
00:13:18
1971 from the start it was virtually
00:13:22
impossible to tell the twins apart their
00:13:24
relatives still have a tough time even
00:13:27
their own mother
00:13:29
[Music]
00:13:32
nobody knows Sanford
00:13:34
if you don't see them when you do
00:13:36
something you don't know who did what I
00:13:39
can't do it I know you can't do cuz I'm
00:13:43
the one in heaven
00:13:46
June 10th 1993 the night after the motel
00:13:50
robbery luck was not on Fred's son
00:13:53
everything that could have gone wrong
00:13:55
for him did you don't officer mr. brown
00:14:00
did you know your license plate light is
00:14:02
out Nana I'm sorry miss your driver's
00:14:05
license Fred acknowledges that he had a
00:14:08
history of trouble with the law
00:14:09
otherwise he might have acted
00:14:11
differently I think I left at home I
00:14:15
don't get it far away what's your name
00:14:17
Cedric young spelling CED Ric I gave him
00:14:21
my brother's name because I didn't even
00:14:24
having a driver's license you know my
00:14:26
brother did
00:14:28
keep an item it seemed like a good idea
00:14:32
at the time to use Cedric's name instead
00:14:35
of his own it turned out to be anything
00:14:38
but Cedric turn around put your hands
00:14:40
behind your back the license is revoked
00:14:43
license revoked
00:14:45
Cedric young yeah sure under arrest for
00:14:47
driving under a suspended license Oh
00:14:49
same time he asked me could he searched
00:14:52
and caught I told him sure you could
00:14:55
things were about to go from bad to
00:14:57
worse for Frederick young he saw
00:15:01
searching the passenger side and he
00:15:03
reached and grabbed a bag
00:15:11
[Music]
00:15:12
consider would you like to explain what
00:15:14
this is doing in your car office I swear
00:15:17
to you I've never seen that gun before
00:15:18
my life that same gun was later linked
00:15:21
to the holdups at the police station
00:15:23
Fred clean clean about the mix-up was
00:15:25
Cedric's name it was too late an
00:15:28
incriminating chain of events had been
00:15:30
set into motion
00:15:32
Fred young was charged with six counts
00:15:34
of armed robbery so was his alleged
00:15:37
accomplice Chris Ross a boyhood friend
00:15:39
of the twins
00:15:40
Fred's trial got underway a year later
00:15:42
during the court proceedings it would
00:15:45
come out how the sawed-off shotgun got
00:15:47
in his car it was just one of many
00:15:49
revelations to come now what happened
00:15:52
after they came into the room busting
00:15:55
Tina was in the bathroom the first joke
00:15:57
the testimony of Debora Haney
00:16:00
one of the motel robbery victims she
00:16:03
claims she recognized Fred during the
00:16:05
holdup Chris opened the bathroom door
00:16:07
where Buster and Tina was at and he had
00:16:10
a gun on him and then Fred came in the
00:16:13
room where we was at and he had Larry
00:16:15
and Veronica to lay down on a bed you
00:16:18
say Chris and Fred do you know their
00:16:21
names well I learned their names
00:16:23
afterwards Fred's face was familiar to
00:16:26
me I had seen him around just in various
00:16:30
places in Winston when you say Fred do
00:16:34
you see that person here in this
00:16:35
courtroom
00:16:38
not so says Fred when she pointed
00:16:42
directly at me that's when I kind of
00:16:44
figured in my head you know if she think
00:16:47
it was me
00:16:48
it's definitely my brother Fred claims
00:16:52
that hit him like a bolt of lightning
00:16:53
that until that moment it had never
00:16:55
occurred to him that his twin Cedric
00:16:57
might have been Chris Ross's partner in
00:16:59
crime how long did it take for all this
00:17:03
to happen from the time they came in the
00:17:06
door less than 10 minutes no more than
00:17:10
five but less than 10 minutes Fred says
00:17:13
that in his mind the picture was
00:17:15
becoming crystal clear so was his belief
00:17:18
that his attorney was not doing a good
00:17:20
job told him and right there in the
00:17:22
courtroom I say it's a peanut Chris Rose
00:17:25
he's like no I can handle it from here
00:17:28
well and didn't happen that way he
00:17:31
didn't do anything not long after the
00:17:34
trial
00:17:34
Fred's attorney would have his license
00:17:36
to practice law suspended for various
00:17:39
violations including neglecting his
00:17:41
clients cases I just really feel like
00:17:44
that he was being misrepresented by a
00:17:47
lawyer he never called Fred
00:17:51
he never wrote Fred alone as a matter of
00:17:54
fact he'd never even accepted a call
00:17:56
coming in for free what time did you
00:17:59
leave your sister's place to go to the
00:18:01
bowling alley according to Fred and his
00:18:03
mother it was a case of mistaken
00:18:05
identity that led to a miscarriage of
00:18:07
justice Chris Ross has since freely
00:18:10
admitted that he put the shotgun in
00:18:11
Fred's car without Fred's knowledge miss
00:18:15
my shotgun and I've put it up on a car
00:18:18
seat I didn't come forward with my
00:18:21
information for the trial what cost
00:18:23
nobody to try to contact me to give my
00:18:27
side of the story about him being tough
00:18:30
something he did not do Chris Ross plea
00:18:34
bargained and received a 20-year
00:18:36
sentence Fredrick young insisting he was
00:18:38
innocent refused to plea bargain and was
00:18:41
found guilty of six armed robbery counts
00:18:43
he was given a separate sentence for
00:18:46
each conviction a total of 68 years
00:18:49
away my client was sentenced and even if
00:18:53
he were guilty of something we think the
00:18:54
sentence is out of whack but it makes it
00:18:57
even worse when he's not guilty to get
00:19:00
that kind of sentence he never said I'm
00:19:02
innocent it was my brother you won't
00:19:03
knock me he waited until I went to trial
00:19:05
trial didn't go as he hoped it would I
00:19:08
think and this became a desperate effort
00:19:10
on his part to throw the blame elsewhere
00:19:13
I'm doing the trial you know I had no
00:19:17
idea that you know that my twin brother
00:19:19
committed these robberies until the lady
00:19:24
pointed directly at me that's when I
00:19:26
come with conclusion I knew it when my
00:19:28
brother at some point in time did deed
00:19:31
a year after the verdict no Fredrik got
00:19:33
another chance the court of appeals
00:19:35
agreed to consider new evidence Chris
00:19:38
Ross took the stand hoping to straighten
00:19:40
out the Cedric versus Fredrik
00:19:42
predicament once and for all
00:19:44
and while you and Cedric young were in
00:19:48
Guilford County did the two of you in
00:19:50
fact commit these six armed robberies
00:19:52
yeah these same six armed robberies that
00:19:55
you pled guilty to yeah picked up the
00:20:00
wrong one free with no mercy it was with
00:20:03
reason why he picked up free cuz he got
00:20:05
caught him a gun so they figure he was
00:20:07
one of youse I'm willing to take any
00:20:10
polygraph test
00:20:11
anything whatever it has to take the
00:20:14
food and I'm innocent you know I'm
00:20:15
willing to go along with it a
00:20:20
lie-detector test has never been done
00:20:22
Chris Ross is uncorroborated testimony
00:20:24
failed to persuade the judge
00:20:26
Frederick young was denied a new trial
00:20:30
with his legal options limited Fred took
00:20:33
his case to the court of public opinion
00:20:34
on a national talk show with millions of
00:20:37
viewers playing jury the question was
00:20:39
put to said are you the guilty party no
00:20:43
I'm not to be in issues I'll be saying
00:20:46
the same thing exact same thing me
00:20:51
brother
00:20:53
don't do me like that man make me suffer
00:20:57
for something you doing me if I was a
00:21:00
rich man if I had money
00:21:03
I was being all of my money to get my
00:21:05
brother out of jail
00:21:06
now I spend all my money I don't smear
00:21:16
all my money to get a high-paying lawyer
00:21:18
to get my brother out of jail I miss
00:21:20
them is Fred languishing in prison for
00:21:24
crimes his brothers said committed or is
00:21:27
it simply a desperate ploy to gain
00:21:29
freedom at all costs as far as the
00:21:33
courts are concerned the case is closed
00:21:35
but if the twins mother were the judge
00:21:37
the verdict would be very different
00:21:42
something will come out of this and I'm
00:21:45
dealing with now that fred is released
00:21:48
and he can go on with his life
00:21:50
and saves punished because he has done a
00:21:55
great hurt to me
00:22:02
[Music]
00:22:11
next what would you do if you discovered
00:22:13
the house you just purchased is haunted
00:22:15
they're about to meet a couple who are
00:22:17
taking the former owners to court
00:22:20
[Music]
00:22:26
there's a certain charm to Lowe's
00:22:28
cottage the two hundred and fifty year
00:22:31
old farmhouse sits on an idyllic piece
00:22:34
of property in the English countryside
00:22:38
it's an oasis of peace and quiet though
00:22:43
it may have a few unearthly surprises
00:22:47
expect frightening we we think the place
00:22:51
is haunted we've seen ghosts we've had
00:22:54
articles thrown about I've seen candles
00:22:56
move all the time the inside of your
00:22:59
stomach's churning up expecting
00:23:02
something to happen even when it's quiet
00:23:05
still on edge
00:23:09
another story about a haunted English
00:23:11
farmhouse not quite the Smiths are suing
00:23:15
the homes former owners for selling him
00:23:17
a house they say is haunted
00:23:19
the previous owners have filed their own
00:23:21
lawsuit they believe the Smiths are
00:23:24
trying to get out of paying for the
00:23:25
house by telling a ghost story
00:23:27
it's a precedent-setting trial that
00:23:29
could rot the English legal system which
00:23:32
side do you think has the most
00:23:34
compelling case the story begins in May
00:23:38
of 1994 Andrew Smith and his wife Josie
00:23:42
moved their family to an old farmhouse
00:23:44
in the remote hamlet of Upper Mayfield
00:23:48
they believe it would be the ideal place
00:23:50
to raise their two children and because
00:23:53
the forum was badly in need of repairs
00:23:55
The Smiths bought it at a bargain price
00:23:58
we wanted to have Stuart out and sell it
00:24:01
and with the equity that we would have
00:24:04
made on the price we wanted to buy
00:24:06
another place but it's about six weeks
00:24:08
after we moved in we know two things
00:24:10
happening you'd walk into our bedroom
00:24:16
when the temperature would be couple
00:24:17
degrees lower than the rest of the house
00:24:19
definite temperature drop the rooms you
00:24:23
could never really see this ceiling
00:24:25
there was always this hazy it was how
00:24:28
its hazy but the former owners two
00:24:31
sisters who grew up in the cottage say
00:24:34
they never experienced anything out of
00:24:36
the ordinary
00:24:37
our parents myself and my sisters never
00:24:40
saw any ghosts or heard any strange
00:24:43
noises or anything associated with the
00:24:47
paranormal I don't think it's haunted I
00:24:49
would live there about 25 years never
00:24:54
saw anything heard anything but the
00:24:58
Smiths
00:24:58
claimed life at Lowe's cottage was a
00:25:00
nightmare
00:25:02
[Music]
00:25:11
we got this feeling when you in the room
00:25:14
that if this thing was a person with its
00:25:18
little finger it could flick you
00:25:20
straight across the room one night we
00:25:24
stayed away till about 3:00 in the
00:25:25
morning then we just fell asleep so
00:25:27
exhaustion and within minutes of us
00:25:29
falling asleep I felt this pressure on
00:25:32
my throat strangling me when Joseph was
00:25:44
being strangled that was that's what he
00:25:47
called failure that was that made me her
00:25:50
sheep straight up one night I was in the
00:25:55
kitchen that was downstairs I was about
00:25:58
8 o'clock at night and I turned around
00:26:00
and I saw this young girl she had the
00:26:05
old gathered top with the body cell and
00:26:07
they gathered skirt and I thought oh
00:26:09
there's somebody outside it wasn't so
00:26:12
like thought about it that I realized I
00:26:14
could see the window frame through her
00:26:17
[Music]
00:26:19
as rubbish absolute rubbish we never saw
00:26:23
any ghosts no unusual happenings
00:26:26
there was nothing flying around rooms
00:26:28
there was no vile smells and mists
00:26:32
nothing at all
00:26:35
convinces some demonic force was living
00:26:37
in Lowe's cottage dismiss went to the
00:26:39
local church for help we have requests
00:26:43
that come from individuals who are very
00:26:45
deeply upset to people who have
00:26:47
buildings that causing the problems you
00:26:50
know various smells apparitions anything
00:26:53
really that is to do with the
00:26:55
supernatural or you know the occultic or
00:26:57
that kind of area and I would say that
00:27:00
Lowe's cottage becomes a fairly near the
00:27:04
top of the list of this The Smiths
00:27:09
ass Reverend monkford to bless their
00:27:11
home after the vicar blessed the place
00:27:14
the house was little everywhere
00:27:19
[Music]
00:27:21
it just seems so light when when you see
00:27:25
the reaction to a prayer in the house
00:27:27
that's when he kind of really amazed and
00:27:31
there's no two ways about it there's
00:27:33
definitely something that the Smiths
00:27:38
believe the vicar's prayers would
00:27:39
finally bring them peace but later that
00:27:42
evening then the Smiths began to make
00:28:01
inquiries in the local village
00:28:08
everything all right there's a story
00:28:13
about they so found out that they were
00:28:17
the only ones in town who didn't know
00:28:20
about the history of Lois cottage a
00:28:22
tragic story had been handed down in
00:28:24
local legend for 140 years during the
00:28:31
1860s a milkmaid named Elaine herring
00:28:34
lived in the cottage along with her
00:28:36
lover Joseph Phillips the Smith's
00:28:41
checked the town records and say the
00:28:43
young couple did exist local folklore
00:28:48
says that Elaine was murdered by her
00:28:50
employer and died in the cellar of Lois
00:28:53
cottage which today is the homes kitchen
00:28:56
when Joseph Phillips received word of
00:28:59
Elaine's death he hung himself in
00:29:01
despair next to the body of his lover or
00:29:05
so the story goes the cottage isn't
00:29:08
haunted the cottage has no reputation in
00:29:11
or Mayfield of being haunted or in
00:29:13
Ashbourne for that matter it's all
00:29:15
untrue there's no record whatsoever
00:29:17
Elaine herring Josie Philips ever living
00:29:20
at Lowe's cottage local newspapers began
00:29:24
carrying accounts of the haunting when
00:29:26
the Smiths tried to refinance their
00:29:28
mortgage as a bank refused saying that
00:29:30
publicity had devastated the homes value
00:29:32
with no money to move the Smiths filed a
00:29:36
lawsuit against Susan melbourne and
00:29:37
sandra pod more we definitely believe
00:29:42
that they should have told us a house is
00:29:43
haunted we have got to tell people if
00:29:46
anybody should anybody in their right
00:29:48
mind want to buy our house we have got
00:29:50
to tell them what has happened and the
00:29:51
fact it's haunted and I think the same
00:29:53
should apply to them The Smiths hired
00:29:59
two paranormal investigators to
00:30:01
videotape their home hoping to get
00:30:03
evidence to support their case the
00:30:06
investigators used a night-vision camera
00:30:08
and place two candles that capture
00:30:11
evidence of a haunting suddenly the
00:30:16
lower canvas seemed to tumble down the
00:30:18
stairs then the camera on an upper step
00:30:22
appeared to fly through the air really
00:30:26
well literally scared to death we didn't
00:30:29
know what to think what to do or you
00:30:31
just definitely got the presence that it
00:30:33
was somebody with you they're definitely
00:30:35
not imagining it because we've had the
00:30:38
experience herself
00:30:40
the two sisters think the whole thing is
00:30:43
ridiculous
00:30:44
absolute rubbish nothing happened at
00:30:47
Lowe's cottage mr. mr. Smith are I've
00:30:50
come up with his story about the ghost
00:30:53
to try and get out of pain how do we
00:30:56
know any of this
00:30:58
anything at all we wouldn't have bought
00:31:00
the place yeah we'll just stay clear of
00:31:02
it we should have been given the choice
00:31:04
if anybody a bought our house instead of
00:31:07
us with a weak heart I'm sure it would
00:31:08
have killed them
00:31:11
[Music]
00:31:30
when we return some say she was the
00:31:33
black widow of Missouri the baddest of
00:31:35
bad girls have you seen Sharon Kinney
00:31:41
[Applause]
00:31:42
[Music]
00:31:45
some people might call Sharon Kinney a
00:31:47
man's woman that is if you're a man who
00:31:50
likes his women fast and loose and
00:31:52
ruthless or it has it that in her youth
00:31:56
Sharon took on lovers at the drop of a
00:31:58
hat and was well-versed in the art of
00:32:00
deception she was a very definition of a
00:32:04
bad girl in the eyes of the law
00:32:06
a lethal Black Widow today she is still
00:32:09
a wanted fugitive whereabouts unknown
00:32:12
[Music]
00:32:15
March 19th 1960 Independence Missouri a
00:32:19
sheriff's deputy was summoned by a
00:32:21
distraught Sharon Kinney then 20 years
00:32:23
old
00:32:27
calm down this can't calm down worthy
00:32:34
Cher's husband James Kinney had been
00:32:37
shot once in the back of the head a 22
00:32:40
caliber target pistol lay in plain sight
00:32:42
there was no sign of a struggle
00:32:45
25 year-old James Kinney would died
00:32:47
enroute to the hospital mrs. Kinney I
00:32:50
realize how difficult this time is for
00:32:52
you but if you could tell us exactly
00:32:54
what happened the next day Sharon Kinney
00:32:56
was interviewed by detectives
00:32:57
James was cleaning his gun her grief and
00:33:00
heartbreak were convincing her bizarre
00:33:02
story demanded no less James was in the
00:33:07
bedroom cleaning his pistol Sharon was
00:33:10
in the bathroom putting on makeup
00:33:12
James laid down for a nap the couple's
00:33:16
two-year-old daughter Danna wandered
00:33:18
into the bedroom and then I heard the
00:33:32
shot and I ran in there and there he was
00:33:34
just lying there was it common for him
00:33:38
to keep the gun loaded I thought she was
00:33:40
credible and she was very distraught and
00:33:44
it was a very genuine and then for me it
00:33:47
became problem of if the little girl did
00:33:49
it what a shame what a terrible tragedy
00:33:52
[Music]
00:33:54
in fact it was beyond terrible Sharon
00:33:57
Kinney was blaming two-year-old Donna
00:33:58
for the death of her own father for the
00:34:01
police doubt began to blossom we were
00:34:05
skeptical about the little girl
00:34:07
but unfortunately they were the only
00:34:09
witnesses there there was no one else to
00:34:12
talk to except except Sharon Kinney all
00:34:14
they could do was just buy into whatever
00:34:15
was Sharon was telling him and she was
00:34:17
very convincing and that's not to their
00:34:20
discredit when when Sharon told you
00:34:22
something it was expected that you
00:34:24
believed it you were just expected to
00:34:26
believe she was that good she was
00:34:29
certainly good enough for the insurance
00:34:31
companies in short order
00:34:33
Sharon collected on policies totaling
00:34:36
$29,000 equal to more than one hundred
00:34:38
and fifty thousand dollars today
00:34:42
Sharon moved on quickly she paid cash
00:34:45
for a sporty new car and allegedly took
00:34:48
up with a married man she bought it from
00:34:51
she wanted the salesman to leave his
00:34:54
wife and his children and take care of
00:34:56
her she wanted it in her mind whatever
00:35:00
Sharon wanted Sharon got but the
00:35:04
salesman apparently had no intention of
00:35:06
leaving his family even though Sharon
00:35:08
told him she was pregnant
00:35:13
some people say Sharon Kenny knew
00:35:16
exactly how to separate the car salesman
00:35:18
from his wife hello Patricia Jones I'm
00:35:22
sorry to have to tell you this but I
00:35:24
have some information about your husband
00:35:28
well he's been having an affair with my
00:35:30
sister I'd like to get together with you
00:35:33
if I could and talk about this a little
00:35:35
more
00:35:36
Patricia Jones reportedly agreed to a
00:35:38
meeting she asked a friend to go with
00:35:40
her you know why don't we take a drive
00:35:47
come with me and we'll go talk somewhere
00:35:49
else
00:35:50
not here yeah but probably a good idea
00:35:54
I'm gonna take a quick ride with her and
00:35:57
sure I need to do this okay just be
00:35:59
careful
00:36:01
Patricia Jones never made it home that
00:36:04
night when word got around the next day
00:36:07
Sharon herself volunteered to help in
00:36:09
the search east-southeast
00:36:17
Shannon listed the aid of yet another
00:36:19
lover John bolus perhaps not
00:36:22
surprisingly their search yielded no
00:36:24
sign of Patricia Jones according to John
00:36:30
bonus
00:36:31
Sharon suggested that they finish off
00:36:33
the evening at a popular Lovers Lane a
00:36:35
spot Sharon was reportedly very familiar
00:36:38
with it's been a while since we've done
00:36:41
this since we've done this yeah I think
00:36:45
you're right
00:36:45
[Music]
00:36:49
what do you see that see what my
00:36:58
friend's wife was wearing a yellow dress
00:36:59
just like that yesterday she makes this
00:37:03
young man get out look and it scares the
00:37:06
living bejesus out of him because there
00:37:08
is the salesman's wife laying shot and
00:37:11
dead at the grass because she's dead we
00:37:19
have to go to the police all right fine
00:37:21
go to the police but you know what drop
00:37:23
me off at home first and don't tell him
00:37:24
I was with you straight away he gave
00:37:28
Sharon away straight away he told him
00:37:30
well I wasn't out here by myself I was
00:37:32
out with mrs. Sharon Kinney and the name
00:37:34
just set off all kinds of bells and
00:37:36
whistles in the investigators head
00:37:37
because they remembered her story from
00:37:39
just a couple months before that
00:37:41
prosecutors wasted no time Sharon Kinney
00:37:45
was charged with both the murder of
00:37:46
Patricia Jones and the murder of her
00:37:48
husband James the circumstances were
00:37:51
sensational and across Missouri Sharon
00:37:54
Kinney became a household name the
00:37:57
Patricia Jones case was tried first and
00:37:59
considered the strongest even though the
00:38:02
murder weapon
00:38:02
another 22 caliber target pistol was
00:38:05
never located by all accounts
00:38:08
Sharon's newfound celebrity charmed the
00:38:11
all-male jury
00:38:12
Sharon had control of that courtroom she
00:38:16
had control love of the jury she had
00:38:18
control of the spectators everybody's
00:38:20
attention was focused on Sharon Kinney
00:38:22
even to the point the second day of the
00:38:25
trial after the trial started Sharon
00:38:26
came moseying in late fashionably late
00:38:29
probably in her mind the trial went on
00:38:32
for about ten days the jury came back
00:38:34
after deliberating only an hour and a
00:38:36
half for the verdict of not guilty the
00:38:39
courtroom erupted in cheers jurors came
00:38:41
out of the juror box and went over and
00:38:42
got Sharon's autograph people in the
00:38:44
audience came in got Sharon's autograph
00:38:47
Kenny's glory would be short-lived in
00:38:49
the case of her husband she was
00:38:51
convicted of murder in the first degree
