Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 3, Episode 11 - Full Episode

May 22, 2019 / 44:47

This episode covers the unsolved cases of Johnny Lee Wilson's murder conviction, the mysterious death of Kenneth Angi, and the psychic artist Carl Pols.

In April 1986, Johnny Lee Wilson was convicted for the murder of wealthy widow Pauline Marx in Aurora, Missouri. Wilson confessed to the crime but later recanted, claiming his confession was coerced. The case has divided the town, with many believing in his innocence, especially after another man, Chris Brownfield, confessed to being involved in the murder.

The episode also features Carl Pols, a British artist known for creating lifelike portraits of deceased individuals she has never met. Her uncanny ability has led to skepticism and intrigue, as many witnesses attest to the accuracy of her drawings.

Additionally, the episode investigates the death of Kenneth Angi, who was found dead in his garage after a bar fight with Curtis Heck. Initially ruled a suicide, doubts arise about the circumstances surrounding his death, leading to questions about potential foul play.

Through reenactments and interviews, the episode raises critical questions about justice, belief in the supernatural, and the complexities of human relationships.

TL;DR

Johnny Lee Wilson's wrongful conviction, Carl Pols' psychic art, and Kenneth Angi's suspicious death are examined in this episode.

I've got a young lad here who went to

00:02:15
March 1990 two hundred people in

00:02:21
a demonstration by Carl pols a British
00:02:23
artist with an unusual vision he doesn't
00:02:26
actually tell me how he was killed for
00:02:31
years audiences from around the world
00:02:33
have been mystified by Carl's work and
00:02:36
often touched by the results of her
00:02:42
drawings are simple portraits nothing
00:02:44
fancy but Carl subjects are otherworldly
00:02:47
people who have been dead for years I
00:02:53
don't actually see these people I don't
00:02:56
hear them and I honestly don't quite
00:03:00
know how I do it I just sense them also
00:03:04
there is an element of what we call
00:03:08
automatic control as if somebody takes
00:03:11
over my hand and gives me a certain
00:03:16
amount of help in getting the drawings
00:03:19
accurate with good results obviously
00:03:25
it's not always good but when we do get
00:03:28
good results we get quite nice
00:03:31
likenesses of people's relatives who
00:03:34
have passed into the world of spirit
00:03:40
today Carl pores lives in a small town
00:03:43
in England for the last 40 years she is
00:03:46
possessed and been possessed by her
00:03:48
unusual ability the concept of life
00:03:53
after death has fascinated mankind for
00:03:55
centuries it is a fascination ripe for
00:03:58
exploitation by mediums and clairvoyance
00:04:00
who claim the power to communicate with
00:04:02
a spirit world
00:04:03
some are obvious charlatans but others
00:04:06
display gifts which seem to defy
00:04:08
explanation during the past four decades
00:04:11
Carl pols has drawn more than 100
00:04:14
thousand eerie portraits it could be
00:04:16
argued that she is nothing more than a
00:04:18
keen observer of faces but her drawings
00:04:21
of people she could never have known or
00:04:23
seen are uncannily accurate and have
00:04:25
convinced some skeptics that her powers
00:04:27
could be real
00:04:32
in 1984 photographer Peter Cook went to
00:04:35
Carl polled his home in Surrey England
00:04:36
Peter was on assignment for a national
00:04:39
newspaper I've always been a pretty
00:04:43
open-minded kind of person and I was a
00:04:47
bit skeptical I had heard about people
00:04:51
speaking with the dead and through the
00:04:53
dead but when it came to drawing was a
00:04:57
different matter do you have any
00:04:59
drawings that you've done Peter and Carl
00:05:05
had never met before he had no idea he
00:05:08
was about to become Coral subject and
00:05:14
Cole just simply asked me to sit down
00:05:16
next to her and I did and she came up
00:05:20
with some pretty astounding pictures now
00:05:26
I've got a little elderly lady here
00:05:29
coming through she brings me the first
00:05:32
of the pictures that she started draw
00:05:34
was my grandmother rounded cheeks as it
00:05:40
took shape I could see that it was going
00:05:42
to be somebody that I recognized and my
00:05:45
stomach was beginning to churn just a
00:05:47
little because it was my first
00:05:49
experience of anybody talking about my
00:05:52
grandmother or any other relation in
00:05:54
that kind of manner a beautiful rosy
00:05:58
complexion
00:05:59
in fact she might even be called rosy
00:06:01
I'll keep getting the word rosy
00:06:03
but she's smiling very much would I call
00:06:08
a country complete
00:06:11
and what she's showing me now definitely
00:06:14
confirms that it's a little water back
00:06:17
where she probably had to get her
00:06:21
drinking water from according to Peter
00:06:27
his grandmother's name was many rose
00:06:29
she did have rosy cheeks and her
00:06:31
drinking water came from a rain barrel
00:06:35
it wasn't so much the picture that she
00:06:38
threw that I recognized so much as the
00:06:40
description she was giving and the names
00:06:43
and the people that were near her and
00:06:47
they were pretty astonishing anybody
00:06:53
who's a skeptic she really I mean they
00:06:56
better open their eyes cuz I thought
00:06:58
he's it many Rose died in 1962 Peter
00:07:03
Cook is positive that Carl had no way of
00:07:06
knowing what she looked like

in the same city in coral also drew
00:07:12
Peter cooks mother Emily who died in
00:07:14
1978 Carl certainly has a special gift I
00:07:19
don't understand why and I have to say
00:07:23
that cholera sparked me off to
00:07:25
investigating in in some depth as to the
00:07:30
possibility of life after death coral
00:07:40
became aware of her gift just after
00:07:42
World War two fools her mother suffered
00:07:44
from severe arthritis nothing else could
00:07:47
ease her mother's pain Carl took her to
00:07:49
a spiritualist I must admit I nearly
00:07:52
died of fright on the spot because the
00:07:54
medium came to me and said do you know
00:07:57
you're a psychic artist which I didn't I
00:08:00
didn't even know what she meant and she
00:08:02
said well you are an artist which was
00:08:04
true and she told me one day I'd be a
00:08:06
very famous medium and I must admit I
00:08:08
thought she was completely barmy and so
00:08:13
I began to sit to try and develop the
00:08:16
gift and eventually within two or three
00:08:18
years was getting psychic drawings I
00:08:22
gave up counting how many we'd ever done
00:08:25
and when I got to 100,000 it just goes
00:08:28
on and I don't have time to keep records
00:08:36
a lady almost held her head up so
00:08:40
straight to join my art contest we were
00:08:44
just momento Rocco was another witness
00:08:46
to Carlos powers Karl drew this portrait
00:08:49
of arraigns
00:08:49
aunt who died when Lorraine was six
00:08:52
[Music]
00:08:53
I have photos that if they're exactly
00:08:59
the same it sir it's quite remarkable I
00:09:03
have never met coal in my life it's the
00:09:06
first time I've I've heard of her
00:09:09
nevermind meet her and I'm devastated
00:09:14
shattered I just couldn't believe what I
00:09:16
saw when people come to me for sittings
00:09:21
some come out of curiosity some come
00:09:23
because they're desperate for evidence
00:09:26
and I hope that I can prove to them that
00:09:31
there is a life after death it doesn't
00:09:33
always work but we try his Carl pols
00:09:39
truly gifted or is she merely a talented
00:09:46
artist with extraordinary powers of
00:09:47
perception
00:09:51
for those who believe Karl poaches
00:09:54
drawings provide comfort and reassurance
00:09:55
that there may be life after death
00:09:58
[Music]
00:10:01
well I don't find it mysterious at all
00:10:05
I've come to a stage where to me it's so
00:10:08
normal so ordinary and I find that life
00:10:14
becomes more beautiful one would not
00:10:18
hasten going into the world of spirit
00:10:20
but it's a beautiful thought that one
00:10:22
day we're all going to be reunited with
00:10:25
those people we've loved and temporarily
00:10:28
been parted from in a moment an
00:10:35
investigation of a firey murder of a
00:10:36
wealthy 79 year old widow two different
00:10:39
men have confessed to the same crime
00:10:41
[Music]
00:10:50
every week hundreds of calls are
00:10:52
received here in our telecenter bunny
00:10:54
with suggestions for stories several
00:10:58
months ago one of our producers received
00:10:59
a startling telephone call from a man in
00:11:01
prison from his cell he told us that
00:11:04
before his imprisonment he'd been
00:11:06
involved in a murder for which another
00:11:07
man had been convicted his call led us
00:11:10
into the disquieting case of Johnny Lee
00:11:12
Wilson a mildly [ __ ] young man
00:11:15
serving a life sentence for the murder
00:11:16
of an elderly woman what makes this case
00:11:19
so intriguing is that Wilson had
00:11:21
confessed to the crime a confession as
00:11:23
proponents say was coerced and now the
00:11:27
final appeal of Johnny Lee Wilson
00:11:32
Warren Missouri population 7,000
00:11:38
a typical Middle American small town
00:11:41
everyone knows everyone else
00:11:45
and everyone in Aurora knew Johnny
00:11:47
Wilson mildly [ __ ] 20 years older
00:11:50
than IQ of 71 who according to
00:11:53
psychologists had the emotional
00:11:54
development of a fourth grader Johnny
00:11:59
was raised in Aurora by his mother and
00:12:01
grandmother I'm going down to Rama's for
00:12:05
some pop okay Johnny was a quiet boy he
00:12:13
was a home boy he never did cause the
00:12:15
same trouble but he had problems
00:12:18
learning disability and we had to have
00:12:21
special education for him and a lot of
00:12:25
the kids we thought at school didn't
00:12:28
treat him you know so good but really
00:12:32
johnny has always been a happy boy even
00:12:35
when we knew things maybe were kind of
00:12:37
bad sometimes he was happy on school
00:12:44
days Johnny left his bicycle with mrs.
00:12:47
Pauline Marx because his classmates
00:12:49
would often vandalize you know it is
00:12:53
mrs. March was a close friend of
00:12:55
Johnny's Granville see you then at 79
00:12:58
she was a last surviving member of the
00:13:00
wealthiest family in Aurora and owned
00:13:02
the town's largest business
00:13:10
April 13th 1986 they PME
00:13:14
fire and rescue squads rushed to the
00:13:17
home of Holly months by the time they
00:13:20
arrived house was engulfed in flames
00:13:23
[Music]
00:13:27
when firemen were finally able to search
00:13:29
the wreckage they found the charred body
00:13:30
of Pauline Mart's
00:13:34
the official cause of death was smoke
00:13:36
inhalation but the fire was not an
00:13:38
accident
00:13:39
mrs. Mart's had been bound and gagged
00:13:41
rope and duct tape investigators
00:13:44
concluded the fire was deliberately set
00:13:47
started with gasoline there was an
00:13:52
immediate public outcry Pauline marts
00:13:55
had been one of Aurora's most beloved
00:13:56
citizens
00:13:58
five days later anger turned to shock
00:14:01
the police picked up Johnny Wilson for
00:14:04
questioning interrogated him for nearly
00:14:06
four hours and finally arrested him
00:14:08
after he'd confessed to the crime a
00:14:11
confession he would later recant I just
00:14:16
I just made the mistake by confessing to
00:14:18
it when I didn't do it to this day I
00:14:23
don't know why that I said I did it you
00:14:25
know
00:14:26
it just it just happened I didn't want
00:14:29
to happen but did I just it was just a
00:14:34
mistake on my part you know saying that
00:14:37
I did it when I really didn't it was a
00:14:38
mistake on my part for the past four
00:14:44
years the Johnny Wilson case has divided
00:14:46
the small town of Aurora many believe
00:14:48
johnny is innocent
00:14:50
law enforcement officials disagree when
00:14:53
we requested interviews of the Lawrence
00:14:55
County Sheriff's Department and the
00:14:56
District Attorney's Office they insisted
00:14:58
they had put the right man behind bars
00:15:00
and declined to participate in the
00:15:02
broadcast the recreations of court
00:15:04
proceedings and Johnny Wilson's
00:15:06
interrogation and confession have been
00:15:08
filmed word-for-word from official
00:15:10
transcripts Sunday April 13th 1986 on
00:15:19
the day of the fire Johnny spent the
00:15:21
early afternoon at home taping records
00:15:23
with a friend later he mowed a
00:15:26
neighbor's lawn when Johnny was finished
00:15:28
his mother drove him home she and his
00:15:32
grandmother claimed he could not
00:15:33
possibly have been at Pauline Marx's
00:15:35
house when the fire was set they didn't
00:15:39
get home until about 5:00 o'clock and as
00:15:42
soon as they got home the neighbor boy
00:15:43
came back over again tape and he stayed
00:15:47
until nearly 7:00 and then when they
00:15:50
left at 7:00 Johnny I put up nine
00:15:51
posters in his bedroom and then when
00:15:54
that was done then we about twenty five
00:15:57
to eight we left her with two letters
00:15:59
and went up to Rama's got some things
00:16:02
and then when we came out that's when we
00:16:03
heard the sirens
00:16:07
we heard a siren so we went over by and
00:16:10
saw that this Pauline's house the back
00:16:12
of the back of the house was engulfed in
00:16:14
flames
00:16:21
hey Johnny how's it going not bad 18
00:16:24
year-old Gary wall was also mildly
00:16:26
[ __ ] he and Johnny were both
00:16:30
enrolled in a special education program
00:16:32
at the local high school basically I
00:16:36
just said hi how are you you know by you
00:16:40
know and then I went back to the car and
00:16:42
sit in the back seat that was it
00:16:47
[Music]
00:16:49
the next morning Gary Wallace pressure
00:16:52
arteries no he gave them a completely
00:16:56
different version to this conversation
00:16:58
with Johnny mrs. Martin you know tied up
00:17:08
well you sound like you know something
00:17:09
about this you tell anybody and I'm
00:17:12
gonna beat you
00:17:14
Gary Wong later took a total of six
00:17:17
lie-detector tests he failed
00:17:20
all but one
00:17:20
[Music]
00:17:25
the morning after Johnny's arrest
00:17:27
sheriff's deputies went to the Wilson
00:17:29
home to search for evidence they can't
00:17:33
to search the house and said they had a
00:17:36
warrant and searched for me I gave him
00:17:39
permission to search because I didn't
00:17:42
think they'd find anything see and but
00:17:46
they did I mean they thought they did
00:17:48
they went to his room and just start
00:17:50
taking things out of drawers and
00:17:53
cabinets and things that was in there
00:17:56
the authorities believe that Johnny had
00:17:58
sexually assaulted mrs. marks deputies
00:18:03
found women's underwear the bureau and
00:18:04
Johnny's rule however the family said
00:18:07
the bureau and clothing belonged to
00:18:09
Johnny's mother in Johnny's confession
00:18:13
he admitted to stealing Julie the
00:18:16
deputies also took costume jewellery
00:18:18
which Johnny's grandmother's had she
00:18:20
used for sewing
00:18:22
finally they found a nearly empty gas
00:18:25
can which investigators would later say
00:18:27
is used to start the fire
00:18:30
[Music]
00:18:34
Johnny Wilson was charged with
00:18:36
first-degree murder
00:18:37
because of his diminished mental
00:18:39
faculties Johnny was examined to
00:18:41
determine if he was fit to stand trial
00:18:44
what you like about high school I was
00:18:48
the manager for the football team they
00:18:51
gave me a jacket and everything Jamboree
00:18:54
friends in school when you're asked to
00:18:57
evaluate someone's fitness to stand
00:18:59
trial you look at first whether they
00:19:02
understand what the charges are against
00:19:04
them and the science are they able to
00:19:08
reason and make their own decisions
00:19:10
about whether to enter a plea are they
00:19:13
able to decide whether they want to
00:19:16
testify in their own behalf at a trial
00:19:17
are they able to help their attorney by
00:19:21
giving him a consistent account of what
00:19:23
happened
00:19:25
and in those particular range of skills
00:19:29
I did not think Johnny was cause of the
00:19:31
stand trial I used to work at the
00:19:32
hardware store Johnny when the police
00:19:36
arrested you did they ask you anything
00:19:38
about Miranda rights yeah I think so do
00:19:42
you know what Miranda rights are yeah
00:19:45
what are they
00:19:48
what's the difference between right and
00:19:50
wrong
00:19:55
johnny was ultimately examined by two
00:19:57
psychiatrist and a psychologist and two
00:20:00
of the three judge that he was incapable
00:20:02
of understanding the court proceedings
00:20:04
however the third the court appointed
00:20:06
psychiatrist determined that he was fit
00:20:09
to stand trial
00:20:13
johnny told his court-appointed
00:20:15
attorneys he was in assisting however
00:20:18
based upon his confession testimony of
00:20:21
Gary wall and other evidence
00:20:23
his attorneys advised him to plead
00:20:24
guilty to avoid the death penalty by
00:20:28
pleading guilty Johnnie lost his right
00:20:31
to a trial by jury because he had given
00:20:35
a confession his attorneys told him that
00:20:38
it would be very likely that you would
00:20:40
get convicted
00:20:41
if this went to trial and they also told
00:20:44
him that this judge was very likely to
00:20:46
give him the death penalty based on
00:20:47
prior cases that had gone before this
00:20:50
judge and so what he understood was if
00:20:52
he went to trial and he was found guilty
00:20:54
that he would die what is your
00:20:57
understanding of why you're here this
00:20:59
afternoon plead guilty why are you
00:21:03
pleading guilty Johnny I don't know
00:21:06
pardon this recreation of Johnnie's hero
00:21:10
has taken verbatim for the court
00:21:12
transcripts just a first-degree murder
00:21:15
but that's what you're beating guilty -
00:21:18
why are you wanting to enter such a plea
00:21:21
I don't know the so-called plea of
00:21:25
guilty should have been stopped about 60
00:21:28
seconds after it started the judge asked
00:21:32
Johnny if he knew what he was doing and
00:21:34
Johnny Wilson said no I don't understand
00:21:37
why I'm here I don't understand what's
00:21:39
going on and the judge said do you want
00:21:41
to plead guilty to this charge and
00:21:43
Johnny said no I don't want to plead
00:21:45
guilty to it at that point the circuit
00:21:47
judge sort of said gentlemen court's
00:21:49
adjourned this case will be set for
00:21:51
trial in two weeks I expect everyone to
00:21:53
be here and be ready for trial I'm not
00:21:55
going to take this plea of guilty but he
00:21:57
didn't the judge went further continued
00:22:00
to cross-examine Johnny and finally
00:22:02
accepted the plea of guilty was
00:22:04
voluntarily entered and will accept your
00:22:06
plea and pronounced sentence upon your
00:22:09
plea of guilty in this cause the court
00:22:11
sentences you to life imprisonment in
00:22:14
the custody of the Missouri Department
00:22:15
of Correction
00:22:17
rooks Danziger Johnny Wilson was
00:22:21
immediately remanded to the Missouri
00:22:22
State Penitentiary
00:22:25
ten months later at a prison in Kansas
00:22:28
this man confessed that he knew who
00:22:31
killed Wally Mart's
00:22:33
and it wasn't Johnny Wilson and we
00:22:36
return we examine evidence which has led
00:22:39
many to believe that Johnny Lee Wilson
00:22:41
is innocent
00:22:47
in 1986 Johnny Lee Wilson mildly
00:22:51
[ __ ] twenty-year-old confessed to
00:22:53
the murder of Pauline Mart's was
00:22:55
sentenced to life imprisonment two years
00:23:00
later in February 11th 1988 convicted
00:23:04
felon Chris Brown fee confessed to
00:23:06
participating in the same crime Braun
00:23:09
Field was and still is serving a life
00:23:12
sentence in Kansas for accessory to
00:23:14
murder
00:23:15
once I found out that they had a
00:23:17
[ __ ] boy that they'd before spending
00:23:20
confessing to the crime and stuff I just
00:23:23
kind of got feeling sorry for him and
00:23:25
then I found out he was raised by his
00:23:28
grandmother and mother you know and I
00:23:30
was raised by my grandmother's [ __ ] I
00:23:33
had a lot of feelings toward probably
00:23:35
what they felt and it was it was just
00:23:39
such a situation to me it was so cut and
00:23:42
dried that they had the wrong man I just
00:23:44
stopped shouldn't be any problem you
00:23:48
know to tell him I got the wrong man
00:23:49
look at it and release the board
00:23:54
according to Chris Brown she/he and an
00:23:56
unnamed accomplice at the tipped off of
00:23:58
Pauline Mart's kept a great deal of
00:24:00
money in her home
00:24:01
[Music]
00:24:07
they broke into the house
00:24:08
[Music]
00:24:17
hey sonic just relax
00:24:22
come on just watch it
00:24:26
Oh
00:24:28
where's Ramona a lady huh according to
00:24:32
brown they ransacked the house mrs.
00:24:39
Mart's was bound and gagged
00:24:45
Brown field and as a country's decided
00:24:47
to burn down live so that no evidence
00:24:50
would be left of the sea
00:24:55
Broadview says he was outside when as a
00:24:57
couple started the fire
00:24:59
[Music]
00:25:07
let's get on it let's go on back simply
00:25:10
clear out brownfield claims he later
00:25:13
tried to go back inside to save mrs.
00:25:15
Mart's
00:25:19
it was too late
00:25:23
two men at the sea
00:25:29
[Applause]
00:25:32
alaa news of Priss brownfields
00:25:34
confession was made public the town of
00:25:36
Aurora was thrown into turmoil one group
00:25:40
of citizens banded together and erected
00:25:42
this billboard shortly thereafter it was
00:25:45
firebombed by a Malone party
00:25:49
the sheriff believed Chris brownfields
00:25:52
confession was part of an elaborate
00:25:53
escape plan and discounted it
00:25:57
Chris Brown feel is a cold-blooded
00:26:00
murderer he has killed senior citizens
00:26:03
before using the exact mo in the same
00:26:07
manner that mrs. Mart's was killed noted
00:26:12
Missouri attorney D Wampler was hired to
00:26:14
represent Johnny and reopening a case
00:26:17
Walter became convinced the Johnny's
00:26:19
confession have been Coors it's the
00:26:21
first time the state of Missouri has
00:26:23
ever put a third grader on trial for
00:26:24
murder Johnny Lee Wilson was at a movie
00:26:28
theater on the night that he supposedly
00:26:30
confessed and they tricked him into
00:26:32
going with them to the police
00:26:34
headquarters he had lost a billfold
00:26:37
several days earlier and they came and
00:26:39
asked him to go to the police station
00:26:41
and he thought that he was going because
00:26:43
they had found his billfold jari did you
00:26:46
lose a wallet yeah we found it we got it
00:26:49
down at the police station if you come
00:26:50
down and identify it you pick it up
00:26:52
taking it home okay his mother and
00:26:55
grandmother were not told that they were
00:26:58
going to question him that evening John
00:27:01
is there any possibility that you are
00:27:04
involved in this no what if I told you I
00:27:08
thought you was a police interrogation
00:27:10
weekend at 8:30 p.m. and was concluded
00:27:13
just after midnight what if I told you
00:27:15
you was seen at that fire before it
00:27:17
started all right say I wasn't the word
00:27:20
spoken in his scenes are taken verbatim
00:27:22
from transcripts of a police tape
00:27:24
recording what would you do if we
00:27:27
brought in a witness in here in this
00:27:29
chair and he said here and looked you
00:27:32
right in the eye and said John you was
00:27:34
there before that fire started they are
00:27:37
and that kept on saying
00:27:39
well we know you did it we know we got
00:27:41
we got a witness saying that you told
00:27:44
him you told him you did it and after
00:27:49
that you know I I just remained maintain
00:27:53
my innocence I said I didn't I didn't I
00:27:56
didn't do it I don't know who did I
00:27:59
didn't do it
00:28:00
murders what you're in here for three
00:28:02
they startled us start yelling saying
00:28:06
well we know you did it you don't tell
00:28:08
us that you did it so we just get this
00:28:10
all wrapped up so when all go home
00:28:12
didn't know she was tied up how'd that
00:28:14
information get out there's a whole
00:28:16
bunch of people out there that night
00:28:18
that came up with information that she
00:28:20
was tied up the language use was so
00:28:22
aggressive I'm an ordinary individual
00:28:25
might have done at that point what's the
00:28:26
end the interviewer asked for their
00:28:27
attorney but being a fairly young young
00:28:32
man who was limited intellectually and
00:28:35
no prior experience with the criminal
00:28:37
justice system and the emotional
00:28:39
stability of an eight or nine year old
00:28:42
they're not gonna know to say get out of
00:28:45
my face stop talking to me you know I
00:28:47
don't I didn't do it and you know I've
00:28:50
already told you that I want to end this
00:28:51
he didn't think he had the permission in
00:28:53
this he didn't know it get in the
00:28:54
interrogation I wasn't fine model of
00:28:56
that how you know too much why'd Gary
00:28:58
make up something like that on you he
00:29:00
mad at you Dan of the jintan at the end
00:29:03
interrogation he he forced my head back
00:29:06
and that's that's when I said okay okay
00:29:08
I did it
00:29:10
but when I really didn't that's that's
00:29:11
when I like what besides her rope was
00:29:14
around her ankles the interrogation
00:29:16
contains the deputies pressed for
00:29:18
details you know and I know just thank
00:29:24
come on John thank you
00:29:28
well what are some of the things that
00:29:29
could be used my handcuffs I think no no
00:29:34
we're on gas Bureau a scared kid you
00:29:38
know sometimes you'd lie to get out of
00:29:40
trouble and essentially when he gave his
00:29:43
confession I think he may have been
00:29:44
lying to get out of trouble the
00:29:47
immediate trouble at the moment which
00:29:49
was a couple of angry detectives you
00:29:52
know questioning pretty vigorously they
00:29:54
just simply said if you'll tell us what
00:29:56
we want to know we can all go home and
00:29:58
he was just acting like a child that has
00:30:01
a that has brain damage and he thought
00:30:04
okay I'll tell them what they want to
00:30:05
know and then we'll all go home
00:30:09
but Johnny did not go home
00:30:15
but at the end of the confession they
00:30:16
they slapped the handcuffs on me and
00:30:18
walked me out the door and drove me to
00:30:20
Melbourne and locked me out that's
00:30:22
that's why that's why I bosses nine
00:30:25
going home over over something that I
00:30:27
think just run my life
00:30:31
I said I'd said to my jail cell you know
00:30:33
just
00:30:35
thank you I didn't do this you know
00:30:40
bottom line on
00:30:42
I just wanna go home former sheriff's
00:30:46
deputy Dustin told her began studying
00:30:48
the evidence on his own he came to
00:30:51
Johnny's defense as I got into the
00:30:55
reports I observed that what was being
00:30:59
said about Johnny Wilson by the
00:31:00
Sheriff's Department and other
00:31:01
investigative agencies and what was
00:31:03
substantiated by evidence were not the
00:31:05
same thing
00:31:08
Toder discovered that the costume
00:31:10
jewelry taken by investigators from the
00:31:12
Wilson home belonged to Johnny's
00:31:14
grandmother the underwear they found
00:31:18
belonged to Johnny's mother and there
00:31:21
was another gas can found at the crime
00:31:23
scene which was never entered into
00:31:25
evidence the more I observed the less
00:31:29
evidence I could find there just I never
00:31:32
did find anything that could tie Johnny
00:31:33
Wilson to the case one surprising piece
00:31:38
of evidence which was discovered at the
00:31:40
crime scene was a battery-operated stun
00:31:42
gun in his confession Kris brownfield
00:31:50
mentioned losing a stun gun during the
00:31:52
robbery and a weapon which he described
00:31:54
was identical to the one found at the
00:31:56
scene it had never been publicized that
00:32:00
a stun gun had been used in this crime
00:32:04
Chris Brown filled in his confession was
00:32:07
the first one who ever mentioned the
00:32:10
stun gun
00:32:10
he described the stun gun and drew a
00:32:14
picture of it that was identical to the
00:32:17
stun gun that was eventually found at
00:32:19
the crime scene Johnny Lee Wilson didn't
00:32:22
even know what a stun gun was he was
00:32:24
asked about it he thought a stun gun was
00:32:27
an electric razor
00:32:30
[Music]
00:32:32
on may 8th 1989 Dee Wofford presented a
00:32:36
motion in Circuit Court requesting the
00:32:39
Johnny Wilson be given a jury trial the
00:32:43
motion was denied the judge ruled that
00:32:47
Johnny was competent when he pled guilty
00:32:49
the Chris Brown field was not a credible
00:32:52
witness brown field had refused to
00:32:55
testify in person at the yield how would
00:32:59
the state of Missouri suffer from giving
00:33:02
this poor little boy a trial that
00:33:04
probably would only take two or three
00:33:05
days I couldn't see that there's any
00:33:08
harm or damage in it and he should have
00:33:10
been given a trial in my opinion today
00:33:17
Johnny Wilson is still serving his life
00:33:19
sentence he has been placed in
00:33:22
protective custody because prison
00:33:24
officials believe he would not be able
00:33:26
to protect himself or the general prison
00:33:28
population
00:33:30
Johnny will be eligible for parole when
00:33:33
he is 70 years old justice has been very
00:33:39
difficult to find in the Johnny Wilson
00:33:41
case it's one of those cases perhaps
00:33:44
there's only one in a thousand where an
00:33:47
innocent man is doing time in the
00:33:50
penitentiary and Johnny Lee Wilson is
00:33:52
innocent and if he had a trial he would
00:33:55
probably be acquitted I don't think the
00:33:57
jury would deliberate more than an hour
00:33:59
before they acquitted him and it's a
00:34:02
shame that he never got a chance to
00:34:04
prove his innocence all I want somebody
00:34:07
to believe me you know you know just
00:34:10
that I didn't do this
00:34:15
in September of 1990 an appeal was heard
00:34:18
before the Missouri appellate court
00:34:20
Johnny's appeal for a trial who was
00:34:22
denied once again
00:34:25

00:34:41
when we return a man is found dead in
00:34:44
his garage the morning after a barroom
00:34:46
brawl accident foul play
00:34:52
[Music]
00:34:58
October 4th 1988 3:30 p.m. what did you
00:35:03
find when you first came
00:35:05
police led more North the court all
00:35:07
again an investigation into the death of
00:35:09
a local auto apparently an hour earlier
00:35:14
the body of 27 year old Kenneth Enki had
00:35:16
been discovered in his own garage by his
00:35:18
uncle the cause of death massive carbon
00:35:21
monoxide poisoning initial indications
00:35:24
pointed to a probable suicide Kenny had
00:35:29
too much going for him to be committing
00:35:31
suicide you know that was way too far
00:35:36
you know he didn't have any trouble so
00:35:39
it would bother him that much almost
00:35:43
immediately bits of evidence began to
00:35:45
cast doubt on the suicide Theory a fully
00:35:48
loaded 22 caliber rifle was lying six
00:35:50
feet from angee there was a small pool
00:35:53
of blood on the floor
00:35:53
but no marks on the body and no sign of
00:35:56
a struggle even more puzzling the fuel
00:35:59
tank of the truck in the garage was
00:36:01
nearly full and the ignition had been
00:36:03
turned off if Kenneth ink he had in fact
00:36:05
committed suicide by an ailing carbon
00:36:08
monoxide then who turned off the trucks
00:36:11
engine the investigation into Kenneth's
00:36:17
Angie's death was stymied his family
00:36:19
vehement Lee insisted that suicide was
00:36:21
out of the question but if there was
00:36:23
foul play involved who could have had a
00:36:25
motive and the opportunity to commit the
00:36:27
crime within 12 hours of police found a
00:36:31
potential suspect who had both motive
00:36:32
and opportunity
00:36:37
- am huncles bar on the main street of
00:36:40
ed more bike losing time only two
00:36:43
customers remain Kenneth Angie and
00:36:45
Curtis heck another auto repair man I'm
00:36:51
taking you home tonight are you going
00:36:54
away Curtis do you really are a [ __ ]
00:36:57
Barney I want to talk to you go home
00:36:59
with me your head and thought me neither
00:37:02
one of us are mama dolly I mean I was
00:37:05
rolling around on the floor or a sling
00:37:06
and a bunch of dumb stuff there was some
00:37:10
punches thrown back and forth but nobody
00:37:11
really got hurt and uh at one point I
00:37:15
got him down on the floor and I and I
00:37:17
held him down there and I told him I'm
00:37:18
gonna let you up and I said when I let
00:37:21
you up I want you to just walk out the
00:37:22
door and I let him up and then he did go
00:37:27
out the door
00:37:29
[Music]
00:37:33
moments later Kenneth's inky retaliated
00:37:36
I heard the crash out front and I and I
00:37:50
knew what it was as soon as I heard it I
00:37:52
seen my pickup out there it had been
00:37:55
broadsided I thought about just
00:37:57
forgetting the whole thing but more I
00:37:59
thought about it I thought me and Kenny
00:38:03
were both body men and he had just
00:38:05
annihilated my pickup so I thought if
00:38:09
I'm gonna have to fix my vehicle then
00:38:11
he's gonna have to fix his
00:38:13
[Music]
00:38:17
approximately one hour later heck in the
00:38:19
barmaid a ride a 10 G's home Angie's
00:38:22
truck was parked in the driveway
00:38:31
[Music]
00:38:40
I heard a noise coming from the garage
00:38:43
it's a groaning sound so I went around
00:38:46
to the back door and I opened up the
00:38:49
door and I went in and only told my crap
00:38:53
don't you
00:38:59
[Music]
00:39:00
I should have realized you know that
00:39:03
there was something wrong with him but I
00:39:04
didn't I was mad at him anyway any other
00:39:07
time if I'd have seen somebody on the
00:39:09
floor morning and groaning I certainly
00:39:11
wouldn't have left him there but you
00:39:13
know the guy just smashed my pick up all
00:39:15
the pieces and I had I figured he was
00:39:19
sick from drinking so I figured go ahead
00:39:21
and spend the night on the garage floor
00:39:24
according to the official police report
00:39:26
this is the last time Kenneth Anger was
00:39:29
seen alive
00:39:30
I believe that Kenneth engi when he was
00:39:33
in the garage and it became cool started
00:39:36
the vehicle sat there and waited for
00:39:39
Curtis heck to come to the garage for
00:39:41
the confrontation that was bound to
00:39:43
happen
00:39:45
realizing that something is happening to
00:39:47
him at this point I believe he turned
00:39:50
the vehicle off that was in the garage a
00:39:52
pickup started to head for the door and
00:39:56
didn't quite make it to the door before
00:39:58
he collapsed time passed and he died
00:40:05
waiting for Curtis hang
00:40:09
Angus uncle Richard Nygard disagrees
00:40:12
with the police I think Kenny was a
00:40:16
little bit smarter than that just start
00:40:18
a vehicle up and leave it running in the
00:40:20
garage while he was still in there he
00:40:23
might have started it up just so he
00:40:26
could move it and probably run his own
00:40:27
vehicle in and run that one Holland
00:40:32
my god believes that ng heard her
00:40:35
kicking his truck
00:40:37
[Music]
00:40:42
he feels that the two men had another
00:40:44
confrontation inside the garage
00:40:49
he fell the Honan
00:40:52
probably
00:40:53
was knocked unconscious Curtis shut the
00:40:57
door and walked away and then realized
00:40:58
the truck was running and come back and
00:41:00
went in and shut it off
00:41:10
with a sealed garage that was still
00:41:12
enough carbon monoxide fumes in there
00:41:14
did still do so via
00:41:16
the autopsy does not indicate that there
00:41:19
was any assault on that body and I don't
00:41:21
believe there was it doesn't make me
00:41:24
very happy to know that I was the last
00:41:25
person to see him alive and walked out
00:41:27
the door left him there but I had
00:41:29
absolutely no reason to to think that
00:41:33
there was any carbon monoxide involved
00:41:35
because there was a vehicle in his
00:41:37
garage there was a friend of his pickup
00:41:39
in the garage but it wasn't running and
00:41:42
I don't remember seeing any smoke in the
00:41:46
garage I don't remember I think I would
00:41:48
have noticed that several puzzling
00:41:52
questions continue to loom over this
00:41:54
case did Kenna think he started the
00:41:56
truck to keep warm until the inevitable
00:41:58
arrival of Curtis heck eggy was a
00:42:01
trained mechanic and certainly knew the
00:42:02
lethal possibilities of running an
00:42:04
engine in a small enclosed space unless
00:42:07
alcohol had completely impaired his
00:42:09
judgment but if a drunken angee did
00:42:12
start the truck and was overcome by
00:42:13
fuels how could he have had the clarity
00:42:16
of mine to cut the ignition but be
00:42:18
unable to reach the door just 15 feet
00:42:20
away and finally if it was not engi who
00:42:25
turned off the ignition and who did and
00:42:28
left him on the floor to die we believe
00:42:32
that the death occurred from a lethal
00:42:35
dose of carbon monoxide and that there
00:42:38
was no criminal foul play involved the
00:42:41
family wants to continue the
00:42:43
investigation as to theories which
00:42:45
they're certainly entitled to but law
00:42:47
enforcement has officially closed this
00:42:49
case it just doesn't seem to be a
00:42:52
clear-cut answer to it and there's been
00:42:54
a lot of stories and rumors and and it's
00:42:58
it's been and just it's been hell on
00:43:00
everybody is what it's been and I'd like
00:43:02
to see an answer to it someplace I don't
00:43:06
think they'll ever have a you know the
00:43:10
final that says this is exactly what
00:43:13
happened
00:43:14
I don't think they ever will you know
00:43:16
there's just there's too many loose ends
