Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 1, Episode 10 - Full Episode

March 09, 2017 / 42:48

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the mysterious death of college student Jason Artist in Tijuana, sleepwalking incidents leading to fatal outcomes, the disappearance of Army Lieutenant Ray Hickingbotham, and a haunted house in Ohio.

Jason Artist, a 20-year-old college student, was found dead in Tijuana after a night of partying with his brother Steven and friend Michael. Steven believes Jason was murdered by the police after he was seen in the back of a police car. The Tijuana authorities claim it was a hit-and-run, but the family questions the autopsy findings.

The episode also highlights the case of Jared Algood, a habitual sleepwalker who died after sprinting barefoot on icy pavement. His mother, Becky Algood, and experts discuss the dangers of sleepwalking, which can be triggered by stress and sleep deprivation.

Another segment features the disappearance of Lieutenant Ray Hickingbotham, who vanished in 1947. His daughter, Carol, becomes a private investigator and learns from a mysterious caller that her father was hidden by the government to protect him from danger.

Lastly, a couple in Ohio experiences terrifying hauntings in their home, believed to be linked to the mysterious disappearance of a child who once lived there. Paranormal investigators explore the home, finding unusual energy fields that may contribute to the haunting.

TL;DR

This episode covers Jason Artist's suspicious death, sleepwalking fatalities, a missing Army officer, and a haunted house in Ohio.

life 1:30 a.m. Steven Thomas is looking
00:01:47
for his brother Jason in the crowds of
00:01:49
partyers they become separated while
00:01:52
heading back to their car I looked to
00:01:55
the right of me I turned around my
00:01:57
brother wasn't there I mean it was like
00:02:01
that an hour and a half after Jason
00:02:04
disappears a Tiana police officer
00:02:07
discovers his battered body in the
00:02:11
road Jason was drinking and he was loud
00:02:16
and obnoxious and maybe out of
00:02:19
control that night I
00:02:22
believe that Jason was murdered by the
00:02:25
Tijuana
00:02:26
police 20-year-old Jason artist was
00:02:29
attending College in Los Angeles he
00:02:31
brought his younger brother Steven out
00:02:33
for a visit and a good time South of the
00:02:36
Border but that good time would end in
00:02:44
tragedy Saturday night the main drag was
00:02:47
packed for many the loose drinking laws
00:02:50
here were the biggest
00:02:58
attraction
00:03:01
about 900 p.m. Jason Steve and their
00:03:03
friend Michael Justin started bar
00:03:05
hopping hitting places that offered all
00:03:08
you could drink for less than
00:03:11
$5 Jason was usually friendly but he had
00:03:15
a reputation as a Rowdy Drinker that
00:03:18
night he was already a little buzzed and
00:03:20
he didn't realize that tequila cost
00:03:23
extra $6 a
00:03:26
shot now you owe me $12 $12 you crazy
00:03:31
Jason didn't want to give up the money
00:03:32
so I just say Jason give him the money
00:03:34
just just give him the money and let's
00:03:35
get out of here you know what I'm saying
00:03:37
this ain't the spot we need to be at me
00:03:39
you the car 15 minutes I meet you car 15
00:03:42
Jason and Steven left Michael at the bar
00:03:44
and went back to the
00:03:46
strip my strategy was to hurry up and
00:03:49
find the car so we can go sit down we're
00:03:51
kind of drunk you know what I'm saying
00:03:52
walking around
00:03:55
Tiana walking down the street and that's
00:03:57
when my brother accidentally bumped into
00:03:59
a female officer excuse me you just hit
00:04:01
me you just hit me you just just hit me
00:04:03
well I was kind of frustrated at my
00:04:05
brother for the simple fact of being
00:04:07
that drunk my feelings was just I'm
00:04:09
ready to go home I'm ready to get back
00:04:12
to Van eyes look Jason man you acting
00:04:14
crazy man this ain't our country I told
00:04:17
him walk behind me come on let's hurry
00:04:19
up and try to find this car he's like 3
00:04:22
or 4 yards behind me at
00:04:24
first that's when I walked up some more
00:04:26
to another block so we walked up I look
00:04:29
to the right I looked behind me and my
00:04:31
brother wasn't
00:04:32
[Music]
00:04:35
there my first reaction was probably
00:04:37
that he's sitting down on the curb
00:04:39
somewhere or sitting up against the
00:04:41
building or anything like that you know
00:04:42
what I'm saying because we were kind of
00:04:45
intoxicated soon after Steven lost sight
00:04:48
of Jason Michael claims that he spotted
00:04:50
him in the back of a police
00:04:53
car I looked and I said what is he doing
00:04:55
in the back of a police car there were
00:04:58
the last people I saw Jason with I saw
00:05:01
Jason with my own eyes in the back of a
00:05:03
police car like I know my
00:05:06
hand Michael and Steven never saw Jason
00:05:09
again Jason's family was shocked when 2
00:05:13
Days Later the American counselor sent
00:05:15
word that he was dead his aunt Tina
00:05:18
Martin Smith went to Tijana to identify
00:05:22
the
00:05:23
body I remember thinking this is not
00:05:26
Jason there Jason is somewhere in a jail
00:05:29
in Tiana and someone has robbed him and
00:05:33
they've taken his ID and this person is
00:05:36
in the
00:05:38
m and I look down and it was
00:05:43

00:05:47
Jason Tiana authorities told Jason's
00:05:50
family that he must have gotten lost
00:05:52
trying to get back to the
00:05:58
Border
00:06:00
they called it a tragic hit and run
00:06:02
accident but Steven doubts that
00:06:07
story I believe that it had something to
00:06:09
do with the police I feel that for a
00:06:12
fact after Michael told me that he seen
00:06:15
my brother in the back of a police car
00:06:17
there got to be something up
00:06:18
there Tiana police deny the allegation
00:06:22
they claim they never even had Jason in
00:06:26
custody we check and double check uh
00:06:31
almost the whole month of August and
00:06:34
there is no retention with that
00:06:37
name sometimes it happens that they Mis
00:06:40
write the name in our computer so we run
00:06:43
it with the three names we found
00:06:47
nothing Jason's family obtained a copy
00:06:50
of the autopsy report through the
00:06:52
American culate and had it translated
00:06:54
into
00:06:56
English nothing was adding up first of
00:06:59
all they stated that Jason was hit by a
00:07:02
car and we had these conflicting
00:07:06
things we had the photos of him with no
00:07:10
injuries to his lower extremities with
00:07:13
these
00:07:15
unexplained 5 in marks all over his body
00:07:19
and chest area and in his
00:07:26
face we asked three forensic
00:07:28
Pathologists to to review the report one
00:07:31
agreed with the hit-and Run finding the
00:07:33
other two however questioned the
00:07:35
official
00:07:37
results I would be very skeptical of one
00:07:40
the autopsy findings and the assertion
00:07:43
that that this was simply a hitandrun
00:07:45
accident one has to apply High degree of
00:07:47
skepticism to the entire oopsy in my
00:07:50
view for instance the Tiana coroner
00:07:53
claimed the car hit Jason so hard in the
00:07:56
chest that it ruptured his heart in
00:07:59
order for a blunt blow to get through
00:08:01
the sternum and and and rupture the
00:08:03
heart it would have to virtually crush
00:08:05
the chest and it's quite evident from
00:08:07
from the autopsy that chest is not is
00:08:09
not badly mashed there are no bruises on
00:08:12
it there AR no big hematomas so that
00:08:14
becomes incredible uh the autopsy report
00:08:17
becomes
00:08:18
incredible another Point Jason's head
00:08:21
wounds were similar to those caused by a
00:08:24
beating certainly the lesions around the
00:08:27
head and the skull which was severe uh
00:08:29
certainly consistent with the butt of a
00:08:31
rifle or or or any other uh uh sharp or
00:08:34
even blunt object that that that could
00:08:36
be used on an individual I believe that
00:08:40
he was
00:08:41
[Music]
00:08:45
beaten and after he was beaten perhaps
00:08:48
in an attempt to destroy the evidence
00:08:50
that they perhaps ran over and or drug
00:08:54
him and I believe that when he was run
00:08:58
over that he was already
00:09:02
dead Tijana authorities have closed the
00:09:05
case they believe Jason's family may be
00:09:11
overreacting we have had responses from
00:09:14
the families in conflict with the saying
00:09:17
of the hopsy and the statement from our
00:09:21
department uh even in sometimes uh uh
00:09:25
where there there are witnesses of an
00:09:27
accident and there is a driver resp
00:09:29
responsible for the accident uh there
00:09:31
have been some families stating that uh
00:09:34
they they are not accepting that was an
00:09:37
accident maybe should have gone to jail
00:09:39
for the night but he didn't nobody
00:09:42
nobody deserves to die that
00:09:47
we Jason's family hopes that anyone with
00:09:50

it can be dangerous and sometimes
00:10:28
deadly
00:10:30
Iowa City Iowa Jared Al good was a
00:10:34
talented football player during his
00:10:36
waking hours but was a habitual
00:10:38
Sleepwalker at night it all began when
00:10:41
he was a young boy he was a a major
00:10:44
Sleepwalker and all of my boys are and
00:10:47
that scared me and I talk about it and
00:10:49
I'd ask the doctors about it and they
00:10:50
would just pretty much poo poo it like
00:10:53
it's really nothing CU I I had
00:10:55
asked when Jared went to college his
00:10:57
sleepwalking continued nothing serious
00:11:00
happened until one early winter
00:11:04
morning Jared was up his eyes wide open
00:11:08
but he was not
00:11:12
awake he ran more than a mile Barefoot
00:11:15
on the icy pavement Witnesses later
00:11:18
reported that he sprinted with the
00:11:20
intensity of a runner at the Finish
00:11:23
Line people who have these episodes
00:11:25
spontaneously like Jared get stuck in
00:11:29
this state between wakefulness and sleep
00:11:32
awake enough to perform complex
00:11:34
behaviors not awake enough to be aware
00:11:36
of what we're doing or responsible for
00:11:38
what we're
00:11:39
doing somehow in his sleep Jared managed
00:11:43
to exit his apartment weave around Park
00:11:45
cars and turned Corners as he ran then
00:11:49
in mid stride
00:11:56
tragedy Jared all good died instantly
00:12:00
initially authorities speculated that he
00:12:02
committed suicide Jared's mother didn't
00:12:05
buy it she talked to her son's roommate
00:12:08
and learned that Jared was having a
00:12:11
reoccurring dream about running in a
00:12:13
race Jared said it's a crazy dream I'm
00:12:16
running a race with the man from Bertram
00:12:18
only the man is in a car and I'm on foot
00:12:22
running a race as hard as I can
00:12:25
run some may dismiss this as just a
00:12:28
coincidence
00:12:29
but Jared was killed as he was running
00:12:31
down a road that leads to the town of
00:12:35
Bertram Becky elgood was absolutely
00:12:38
convinced that her son had not taken his
00:12:40
own life and experts agreed there was
00:12:44
not one shred of evidence that he had
00:12:47
depression or any other reason to commit
00:12:50
suicide there was no evidence of drugs
00:12:52
or alcohol involved the only reasonable
00:12:54
explanations is that this was yet just
00:12:56
another one of his sleepwalking episodes
00:13:03
in the end authorities agreed Jared
00:13:05
Algood became the first person in Iowa
00:13:08
history whose death was attributed to
00:13:13
sleepwalking when I hear stories about
00:13:15
Jared algod I think that possibly could
00:13:18
have been me and that that scares me to
00:13:21
think that like Jared Heidi Ruiz is a
00:13:24
dedicated athlete and a sleepwalker she
00:13:28
was attending in college on a track and
00:13:30
field scholarship and felt a tremendous
00:13:32
pressure to
00:13:35
[Applause]
00:13:44
perform I wasn't running from a
00:13:46
particular person or a thing I was just
00:13:49
running because I felt like it was the
00:13:51
end of the world it was like a monster
00:13:54
inside me trying to get out I heard a
00:13:58
blood curdling scream
00:14:00
Heidi's mother witnessed two of the most
00:14:02
violent episodes bang two big hits where
00:14:05
I could hear her coming through
00:14:10
doors help
00:14:14
me I have to tell you the force of her
00:14:17
running through that Hall I will never
00:14:19
forget because of the tear of the
00:14:21
looking of tear on her face was so
00:14:24
incredible and for a mom to not know
00:14:26
what to do in order for her not to be a
00:14:29
to hurt herself again was um a real
00:14:32
scary thing real
00:14:34
scary the biggest episode was in my
00:14:37
mom's house back in August of
00:14:39
95 must have gotten out of bed and took
00:14:43
one step and bolted straight into the
00:14:48
[Music]
00:14:51
wall the impact tore open Heidi's
00:14:55
forehead she gasped her wrist as she
00:14:57
fell to the floor honey okay let me see
00:15:01
I decided I couldn't handle anymore I
00:15:03
was terrified and I said I need to get
00:15:06
go seek
00:15:09
help Heidi was tested at the
00:15:11
world-renowned Sleep Clinic in Northern
00:15:13
California a different look completely
00:15:15
here I had electroids all over my head I
00:15:18
had a pulse on my finger I mean I was
00:15:20
hooked up like I felt like I was from
00:15:24
Mars was very very
00:15:27
uncomfortable but it was an extend test
00:15:29
and they had to see what was going on
00:15:31
through a testing process here in a
00:15:32
moment or so we wanted to see if we
00:15:34
might be able to capture a sleepwalking
00:15:36
episode but that can be rare because it
00:15:38
might not occur every night uh but
00:15:40
secondly we also wanted to Ru out the
00:15:42
possibility that it um wasn't something
00:15:44
else such as seizure activity a sleep
00:15:47
related breathing disorder or even leg
00:15:50
movements that were causing the person
00:15:52
to wake and and triggering off an
00:15:55
attack Dr kashida could find no
00:15:57
physiological cause for Heidi
00:16:00
sleepwalking but he was able to pinpoint
00:16:03
what is likely to trigger an episode
00:16:06
there's a lot of different triggers one
00:16:08
of them is sleep deprivation secondly
00:16:11
stress can also increase a chance that
00:16:14
the person might have um
00:16:16
sleepwalking both Heidi Ruiz and Jared
00:16:19
Algood fit that pattern their
00:16:21
sleepwalking flared up under heavy
00:16:23
emotional pressure and lack of sleep
00:16:26
Heidi now has her sleepwalking condition
00:16:28
under under control through medication
00:16:30
and careful Stress Management
00:16:32
unfortunately a lot of sleep is still a
00:16:35
mystery a big mystery in terms of a lot
00:16:38
of the causes of these Sleep Disorders
00:16:40
but you know it's something that we're
00:16:41
all trying to really work hard
00:16:43
on the world of sleep and dreams has
00:16:46
been the subject of extensive research
00:16:49
but after Decades of testing scientists
00:16:52
are still left with more questions than
00:16:55
answers if you or someone you know is
00:16:58

daddy sweetie Ray was working long hours
00:19:05
and spending little time with his
00:19:12
family be back pick me up at
00:19:16
three in the summer of
00:19:18
1947 Ray was transferred to another top
00:19:21
secet group he did not tell Dorothy
00:19:24
about the new
00:19:27
assignment things and watch what I can
00:19:30
do my mother was worried because he
00:19:31
seemed so tired and so uptight he became
00:19:34
very tense and it became worse it just
00:19:38
got worse and worse late that summer
00:19:40
Dorothy took Carol to Long Island for a
00:19:42
twoe visit with her
00:19:45
grandparents when Dorothy tried the
00:19:47
phone ray she was given the surprising
00:19:49
news that he had gone on
00:19:54
leave then she learned that the military
00:19:56
had without explanation hired a moving
00:19:59
crew to clean out their
00:20:04
apartment 2 weeks later a moving van
00:20:07
showed up at Dorothy's parents home in
00:20:10
the boxes and Trunks there was not one
00:20:12
single item belonging to Ray no pictures
00:20:15
no letters no writing nothing it was as
00:20:18
though he had been purged from our lives
00:20:20
as though he was completely gone and
00:20:21
wiped
00:20:23
out and my mother just didn't know what
00:20:25
to make of
00:20:26
it a month went back and then a man
00:20:29
claiming to be from the Army visited
00:20:31
Dorothy with shocking news this is all I
00:20:33
know on October 14th 1947 he was listed
00:20:37
as awall 30 days later he was dropped
00:20:40
from the military roles and classified
00:20:41
as a
00:20:42
[Music]
00:20:46
deserter as a result Dorothy and Carol
00:20:48
lost all of their military
00:20:51
benefits Dorothy later tried to get in
00:20:53
touch with the mysterious visitor the
00:20:56
Army said they had never heard of him
00:20:59
my mother was alone she was frightened
00:21:02
and uh she was afraid something terrible
00:21:05
had happened to my father perhaps he'
00:21:07
gone overseas him and killed in line of
00:21:08
duty she could not comprehend that he
00:21:11
would just disappear she really thought
00:21:13
the government was withholding
00:21:14
information from her it is absolutely
00:21:18
not total paranoia to to wonder if the
00:21:21
CIA or another intelligence Branch had
00:21:25
something to do with his disappearance I
00:21:27
can think of a half dozen cases where
00:21:30
people you know there were weird things
00:21:32
like that happened where the family was
00:21:34
not told the truth and the loved one did
00:21:37
disappear or or died and they weren't
00:21:40
told how they died Ry was labeled a
00:21:43
deserter and was
00:21:45
disgraced Carol and her mother struggled
00:21:48
to make ends meet Carol grew up married
00:21:51
and moved to
00:21:54
Oklahoma she became a private
00:21:57
investigator special izing and reuniting
00:22:00
families but she never gave up the
00:22:02
search for her own
00:22:05
father as I look through the material
00:22:07
that I received I began to get a picture
00:22:10
of someone very special someone very
00:22:13
highly trained someone who had performed
00:22:16
to the at the top level and I came to
00:22:20
believe that this was a man who would
00:22:22
not just
00:22:25
disappear after years of budding heads
00:22:28
with government government bureaucracy
00:22:30
Carol finally went to the
00:22:32
media an article about her missing
00:22:34
father appeared in the local Arlington
00:22:37
newspaper 3 hours later she received the
00:22:41
phone
00:22:45
call hello the caller identified himself
00:22:49
by a code name Archangel he was using a
00:22:52
mobile phone and would not reveal his
00:22:55
exact location he said that my AR had
00:22:59
really rattled cages at the CIA and that
00:23:02
it had really shook people up those were
00:23:04
his words now listen carefully I've got
00:23:07
to give you some background there had
00:23:09
been sensitive leaks in the atomic
00:23:11
energy area and your dad was
00:23:13
investigating those leaks in August of
00:23:16
47 an attempt was made on his life his
00:23:20
Superior decided to bury your father it
00:23:23
was easier to drop out 20 years ago
00:23:26
things were different the man told Carol
00:23:28
that her father was not a deserter Ray's
00:23:31
life had been in danger so a paper trail
00:23:34
was created to cover his disappearance
00:23:37
the whole time he was a few miles from
00:23:39
our Archangel revealed the astonishing
00:23:41
news that for nearly a year Ry had lived
00:23:44
only 3 mil away from Carol and her
00:23:46
mother he had been hidden by the
00:23:48
government in the suburbs of Washington
00:23:50
DC where is he now your father is still
00:23:54
alive his name is Nelson he lives in a
00:23:57
NATO country country where there were
00:23:59
high mountains Crystal Clear lakes and a
00:24:03
longtime
00:24:04
democracy that's all I can
00:24:09
say when I hung up the phone I felt very
00:24:12
drained maybe he was a jokester or a con
00:24:15
artist maybe he was going to call back
00:24:17
and want money I just didn't know what
00:24:19
to believe but there was a part of me
00:24:21
that kept saying my dad's alive there's
00:24:23
a
00:24:24
chance Carol never heard from the
00:24:26
mysterious caller again but she and her
00:24:29
son Ian have never stopped trying to
00:24:31
decipher archangel's Clues it's Crystal
00:24:34
Clear
00:24:35
leges it is possible that my father
00:24:39
chose to follow his career and that that
00:24:42
was what he wanted Above All Else
00:24:44
including myself and our
00:24:46
family and that's very
00:24:48
painful I have compassion for a young
00:24:50
man who may have made a wrong choice we
00:24:53
all make wrong choices and I want my
00:24:56
father to know that we love him and that
00:24:58
it's it's it's forgotten we just want
00:25:00
the pain of not having him to
00:25:05
end Carol hopes to someday reunite with
00:25:09
her father or at least clear him of the
00:25:11
charge that he's a deserter if you have
00:25:14

00:25:23
next the incredible story of a
00:25:26
supernatural force that is terrorizing
00:25:28
ing an entire
00:25:34
[Music]
00:25:36
family for most of us haunted houses are
00:25:39
the places we visit on Halloween we
00:25:41
scream we jump we laugh and then we go
00:25:44
home but in Ohio a family has to deal
00:25:48
with the horrifying fact that for them
00:25:51
home is A Haunted
00:25:54
[Music]
00:25:57
House
00:26:03
okay got it yeah you first a newly
00:26:06
married couple we'll call them Joe and
00:26:08
Mary Smith thought they were moving into
00:26:11
their dream
00:26:12
home but when Mary was pregnant with
00:26:15
their first
00:26:19
child they got a warning that something
00:26:22
was
00:26:24
wrong it really worried me because it
00:26:27
sounded much more than a mous or a
00:26:29
raccoon or something so like grading
00:26:32
noises and uh things being dragged so to
00:26:41
speak Mary called her father a police
00:26:44
detective careful dad he approached the
00:26:46
addict expecting a
00:26:51
[Applause]
00:26:56
burglar sweetheart
00:26:59
take a look at this the attic was a
00:27:02
disaster Zone blankets pulled out boxes
00:27:05
of Christmas ornaments dumped childhood
00:27:07
trinkets broken yet there was no sign of
00:27:10
an intruder the attic had been sealed
00:27:13
tight at that point I just shivered kind
00:27:17
of like with fear
00:27:19
because something was there that I
00:27:21
didn't know about and I didn't
00:27:22
particularly care for that feeling at
00:27:26
all darn turned on their own and the
00:27:29
strange noises continued Mary soon
00:27:32
learned that the house had a disturbing
00:27:37
past now we've had a nice walk no no no
00:27:40
we hold hands till we get back the
00:27:41
previous owners had reportedly adopted a
00:27:44
little boy one day he just mysteriously
00:27:47
vanished and to this day no one knows
00:27:50
what happened to him Mary suspected that
00:27:52
that boy might be linked to the
00:27:54
hauntings one night when her own son was
00:27:57
almost the same age as the missing child
00:27:59
Mary says that he let out a blood
00:28:01
curdling
00:28:04
[Music]
00:28:08
scream it just was a very tormented type
00:28:12
of a cry that's what I heard in his
00:28:14
voice was that horrible
00:28:16
fear what do you see
00:28:19
honey Mary had no idea what upset her
00:28:22
son until he happened to visit his
00:28:24
grandmother a few weeks
00:28:27
later
00:28:31
Grandma are you
00:28:34
hurt no I want to go home well why and I
00:28:39
thought what happened he says Grandma I
00:28:42
want to go home I'm not never coming
00:28:44
back here again I says why what why why
00:28:48
aren't you coming back he says no no Dev
00:28:52
de I what is he talking about what a g
00:28:57
what are you saying a devil devil the
00:29:00
child was pointing at a religious
00:29:02
painting of St Michael the Archangel
00:29:04
trampling Satan underf foot the little
00:29:07
boy later told his mother it was the
00:29:09
same devil he had seen in his
00:29:11
[Music]
00:29:16
bedroom Mary and her husband considered
00:29:19
moving many times but they had too much
00:29:22
invested in house finally Mary
00:29:25
discovered what she now believes is the
00:29:27
key to the disturbing
00:29:29
events now we've had a nice walk no no
00:29:32
no we hold hands till we get back the
00:29:34
little boy who once lived there had
00:29:36
apparently died under mysterious
00:29:38
circumstances in the
00:29:40
kit and he was buried somewhere on the
00:29:45
property it just was
00:29:49
creepy I perhaps thought there might be
00:29:52
a connection in fact it wasn't a might
00:29:54
be I was very concerned that there
00:29:56
probably was a connection when most
00:29:58
people think of a haunted house they
00:30:01
think of spirits of the dead but uh in
00:30:03
most cases houses that are haunted
00:30:05
genuinely appear to be haunted by some
00:30:07
type of an energy
00:30:10
force at our request Dr Nichols and two
00:30:13
colleagues investigated Mary's
00:30:17
home we conducted a series of uh of
00:30:20
energy field scans throughout the house
00:30:22
to try to establish a baseline energy
00:30:24
field reading uh electromagnetic
00:30:27
Electric magnetic fields microwave
00:30:29
fields to try to determine if there are
00:30:31
any unusual energy Fields present in the
00:30:37
house in one of the bedrooms they found
00:30:40
a strong electromagnetic field that
00:30:43
surrounded a dresser left behind by
00:30:46
previous
00:30:47
owners one of the suggestions that I
00:30:50
made to the family was that they remove
00:30:52
the dresser at least from the bedroom
00:30:54
and preferably from the house
00:30:55
temporarily and see if it has an effect
00:30:58
on The Haunting phenomena that they're
00:31:01
experiencing the Paras pychology found
00:31:03
even stronger readings in the basement
00:31:05
where an abandoned well ran deep down to
00:31:08
an underground
00:31:11
Lake we find many houses uh that are
00:31:14
haunted are located over sources of
00:31:16
underground water and so there does seem
00:31:18
to be a
00:31:19
correlation this may conduct some form
00:31:22
of psychic energy it may conduct some
00:31:25
form of natural earth-based uh magnetic
00:31:28
fields that stimulates a person's
00:31:30
psychic
00:31:31
abilities people ask us frequently do we
00:31:34
believe in ghosts and the answer is yes
00:31:35
there's no question that people
00:31:37
experience ghosts but what are they are
00:31:40
they actually spirits of the Dead are
00:31:42
they some type of entities From Another
00:31:44
Dimension or are they some strange
00:31:46
artifact of the human psyche
00:31:48
unfortunately those are questions which
00:31:50
for now remain an unsolved
00:31:55
mystery next a young boy whose mother
00:31:58
was murdered is the key to catching her
00:32:12
killer it was a summer day in Vancouver
00:32:16
Washington let me zip your coat
00:32:19
up you going to have fun with daddy this
00:32:21
weekend mhm 5-year-old Dustin Johnson
00:32:24
was waiting for his father to pick him
00:32:26
up for a custody visit
00:32:28
Dustin didn't know it but he was saying
00:32:30
goodbye to his mother for the last
00:32:32
time give me a kiss I love you love you
00:32:37
here's your back remember my mom getting
00:32:39
me ready to go with my
00:32:41
dad she gave me a hug and a kiss goodbye
00:32:43
and told my she'd see me when I come
00:32:45
back but then I come back and Mom wasn't
00:32:51
there that same weekend Patricia Johnson
00:32:55
was murdered 9 days later later her
00:32:58
naked decomposing body was
00:33:01
found 2 weeks later Patricia's own
00:33:05
brother Dennis Keith Smith confessed to
00:33:08
the crime he was sentenced to life in
00:33:10
prison on a charge of second degree
00:33:13
murder Dustin moved in with his mother's
00:33:17
parents when Dennis Smith was paroled 10
00:33:20
years later he came to live in the same
00:33:26
house every day Dustin Johnson had to
00:33:28
face the man who killed his mother and
00:33:31
then another Local woman mysteriously
00:33:34
disappeared Dustin became convinced that
00:33:37
his uncle was somehow
00:33:42
involved your lunch is made thanks H Dan
00:33:45
and Carolyn kbby lived just 3 miles from
00:33:48
Dustin they were planning an evening
00:33:52
out we don't have the kids tonight so
00:33:56
why don't we just get together and have
00:33:57
dinner spend some time together okay all
00:34:00
right it promised to be a romantic
00:34:02
evening just the two of them but before
00:34:05
Dan left work his brother called and
00:34:07
invited him to stop by we ended up going
00:34:10
down to uh a Tavern down the street we
00:34:14
we had a beer and we started shooting
00:34:15
some
00:34:16
pool turned out there was a Blazer game
00:34:19
on we started watching that we had a
00:34:20
couple more beers and uh I had decided
00:34:23
just to uh stay behind at his place and
00:34:26
chose not to drive home
00:34:28
home Dan didn't call home until 1
00:34:32
a.m. hi
00:34:34
Carolyn it's me listen I'm going to stay
00:34:37
at Dave's tonight I had a few beers so
00:34:41
you know I better just stay here I will
00:34:43
see you in the
00:34:45
morning Sunday morning Dan returned to
00:34:48
an empty house his message was still on
00:34:51
the
00:34:52
[Music]
00:34:55
machine Carolyn
00:34:58
he assumed that Carolyn was angry with
00:35:00
him for not showing up but by Sunday
00:35:03
night he began to
00:35:05
worry hello Susan yeah this is Dan Dan
00:35:10
called everyone in his wife's phonebook
00:35:12
from A to Z no one could account for
00:35:15
Carolyn Carolyn still hadn't sh up by
00:35:18
6:00 a.m. Monday when she was due at
00:35:20
work Dan and his brother Cruis the
00:35:22
streets of Vancouver looking for any
00:35:25
sign of Carolyn finally they found her
00:35:28
car in a nightclub parking
00:35:31
lot this is her
00:35:36
car the morning bar maid was the G that
00:35:39
worked there Saturday night and she said
00:35:41
yeah I saw your wife she was in Saturday
00:35:44
night that's the last time I saw
00:35:46
her so at that point you
00:35:50
know Panic set
00:35:52
in the car was there and my wife was
00:35:55
nowhere to be
00:35:56
found
00:36:03
when Dustin Johnson read about Carolyn
00:36:04
kbby in the local newspaper one fact
00:36:08
jumped
00:36:09
out I found a name by the name of Dennis
00:36:12
in the newspaper and I continued to read
00:36:16
that the lady was missing and I had this
00:36:19
feeling that that person by the name of
00:36:20
Dennis might be my uncle this might be a
00:36:23
weird conversation Dustin found Dan KB's
00:36:26
number and call
00:36:28
yeah I just was reading through there
00:36:30
and found the name of Dennis do you know
00:36:32
what Dennis's last name is he called me
00:36:35
and said he'd saw the article and if
00:36:37
this Dennis that was mentioned in the
00:36:39
article was in fact Dennis Keith
00:36:42
Smith that that was his uncle and he
00:36:45
wanted to let me know that he had
00:36:47
murdered his mother authorities had not
00:36:50
yet released the last name of the man
00:36:52
seen with Carol Dan asked detectives to
00:36:55
check out Dustin's hunch he said that uh
00:36:59
he thinks that the man Dennis that
00:37:01
you're looking for his name is Dennis
00:37:03
Smith and he said that this guy is a
00:37:06
murderer is that
00:37:08
true there was a long pause from the
00:37:11
detectives and I knew right then it was
00:37:14
the
00:37:16
person at that point in
00:37:19
time I think uh right then and there I I
00:37:23
knew my wife had been
00:37:26
killed
00:37:29
right
00:37:32
there the nightclub bartender helped
00:37:35
police reconstruct what probably
00:37:37
happened to Carolyn
00:37:42
kbby you can tell it on her face she's
00:37:45
been
00:37:46
crying she was alone she didn't want to
00:37:49
be with anybody she's
00:37:52
upset if she would had one more drink
00:37:55
she would have been passed out probably
00:37:56
going to the hospital she's really bad
00:37:58
off she's trouble her oh yeah Dennis
00:38:02
Smith was a regular at the club
00:38:04
according to the bartender Smith had
00:38:06
been watching Carolyn All Night Long at
00:38:09
about 11:30 he made his move it's just
00:38:13
the way he walked up to her is as if
00:38:16
there old friends but she didn't know
00:38:18
who she is
00:38:20
with he spoke to her for a few
00:38:23
seconds she lifted her head up he had
00:38:26
one arm around around his neck and had a
00:38:29
hold of it and walked out with
00:38:32
[Music]
00:38:39
her detectives decided that it was time
00:38:41
to have a little talk with Dennis Smith
00:38:44
who was it you talked to it was the
00:38:45
bouncer okay you said the waitress or
00:38:49
bartender which is it it can't probably
00:38:51
isn't both of them at this point right
00:38:53
so he would laugh at times for no real
00:38:56
apparent reason reason I was which is
00:38:59
very indicative of someone that's trying
00:39:01
to be
00:39:02
deceitful you were in your truck for 45
00:39:04
minutes
00:39:05
yeah what happened what come
00:39:10
on come on Dennis we're all adults
00:39:12
what's going on what happens she
00:39:15
attacked me so you know I'm winded and
00:39:17
I'm pretty tired after that and we you
00:39:19
know what mean she attacked you and then
00:39:21
I see this guy and he's got like the
00:39:22
stick in his hand Smith went on to claim
00:39:24
that the stranger threatened him and
00:39:26
then took Carolyn away a stick what was
00:39:29
it detectives had a hard time believing
00:39:32
that
00:39:34
story especially when they inspected
00:39:36
Smith's pickup
00:39:38
truck oh man that's more than a
00:39:40
cigarette Burn yeah it looks like he
00:39:42
took a torch to it it wasn't just the
00:39:44
gaping hole in the seat that aroused
00:39:46
suspicion the seat cover had been
00:39:49
removed and every inch of carpeting had
00:39:52
been stripped off the floor and at that
00:39:55
that point basically I knew that Dennis
00:39:57
was hiding something from us maybe any
00:40:01
evidence that Carolyn was in his truck
00:40:04
or that something bad happened to her in
00:40:06
the
00:40:08
truck but there was no proof that
00:40:10
Carolyn was actually dead and suspicions
00:40:12
alone weren't enough to keep Dennis
00:40:14
Smith in custody by the time police
00:40:17
collected enough evidence Smith left
00:40:19
town a warrant was put out for his
00:40:25
arrest update
00:40:29
on the night of our broadcast Tracy
00:40:31
hodman and John Cummings were watching
00:40:33
the program with their new neighbor Dave
00:40:38
sandborn he kind of started getting
00:40:40
nervous and um they started describing
00:40:42
the color of his tattoos that were on
00:40:44
his arm and I said I looked over and I
00:40:46
said you have those color tattoos you
00:40:48
know and he asked me is there anything
00:40:51
else on he didn't want to watch the show
00:40:53
and I said no I like the show I'll watch
00:40:54
it and he you know got up and went in
00:40:57
the kitchen he started pacing around
00:41:00
Dave Sanborn of course turned out to be
00:41:03
Dennis Keith
00:41:05
Smith he stole his neighbor's car but
00:41:07
police caught up with Smith 2 days later
00:41:10
at this intersection he turned and
00:41:12
charged the officers and a fight ensued
00:41:15
uh during the course of that fight he
00:41:18
attempted to remove the firearm from one
00:41:20
of the
00:41:21
officers uh was beginning to
00:41:25
successfully remove that firearm when
00:41:26
the second an officer fired a single
00:41:28
shot uh striking Mr Smith in the neck
00:41:32
Smith was also shot in the wrist during
00:41:34
the struggle after 2 weeks in a hospital
00:41:36
he recovered enough to appear in a
00:41:38
Florida courtroom Smith was exed to
00:41:41
Washington and tried on a charge of
00:41:44
first-degree murder he was found guilty
00:41:47
and sentenced to 70 years behind bars he
00:41:51
also received an additional 99 years for
00:41:55
violating parole but the story of Dennis
00:41:58
Keith Smith does not end here while in
00:42:02
prison Smith hanged himself with a bed
00:42:04
sheet attached to an air vent he was 42
00:42:07
years
