March 16, 2022 / 44:46

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the stories of Roger Roas, Caitlyn Arquette, and the Tim Pay family as they seek answers to their respective mysteries.

In 1971, Roger Roas, a treasure hunter in the Philippines, discovered a solid gold Buddha and boxes of gold bars hidden in Japanese tunnels from World War II. After revealing his find, he was tortured by soldiers under the orders of President Ferdinand Marcos, who sought to claim the treasure for himself. Roger's life was forever changed as he went into hiding, and the treasure's whereabouts remain unknown.

The episode also details the tragic murder of Caitlyn Arquette in 1989. Caitlyn was a promising honor student who was shot under mysterious circumstances. Her family believes she may have been targeted due to her involvement in an insurance scam with her boyfriend, leading them to suspect a connection to organized crime.

Lastly, the Tim Pay family recounts their search for Terry Smith, a girl they fostered for six years. After being returned to her father, Terry disappeared from their lives, leaving the family longing for her return.

Each of these stories highlights the pain of unresolved mysteries and the hope that someone may hold the key to the truth.

TL;DR

Roger Roas lost a treasure to Marcos, Caitlyn Arquette was murdered, and the Tim Pay family seeks their lost daughter.

in 1970 Roger roas and his family lived
00:04:03
200 mil north of Manila on the
00:04:04
Philippine island of Luzan Roger worked
00:04:08
in nearby bagio city on weekends he was
00:04:11
part of a large group of Filipinos whose
00:04:13
avocation was treasure
00:04:15
hunting one of Rogers fellow treasure
00:04:17
Hunters was Albert fuchigami whose
00:04:19
mother was Filipino but whose father had
00:04:22
been an officer in the Japanese Army
00:04:24
during World War II fuchigami had
00:04:26
painstakingly recreated from memory a
00:04:29
map of which his father had showed him
00:04:30
as a youngster the map pinpointed the
00:04:33
location of a secret tunnel system where
00:04:35
a fortune and gold bars had allegedly
00:04:37
been left behind when the Japanese were
00:04:39
driven from the
00:04:45
Philippines we were friends for a long
00:04:47
time before he told me that he knew of a
00:04:49
hidden
00:04:52
treasure he revealed to me what he knew
00:04:54
about the
00:04:56
tunnels I had very high hopes because
00:04:59
fuig
00:05:00
was the son of a Japanese
00:05:05
soldier Roger roas and Albert fuchigami
00:05:08
hired a crew to excavate in the first
00:05:10
few minutes of digging they found a
00:05:12
layer of Japanese shrapnel a few weeks
00:05:15
later the crew broke through into the
00:05:17
tunnels which the Japanese had
00:05:19
apparently dynamited
00:05:23
shut the tunnel system was elaborate
00:05:26
complete with railroad tracks for the
00:05:28
next few weeks roas and fuchigami
00:05:31
explored the Labyrinth they found that
00:05:33
one explosion had blocked all access to
00:05:35
the main underground passageway
00:05:38
undaunted they dug a narrow tunnel
00:05:40
around the
00:05:44
Rocks I was the first one who went in
00:05:48
because I was concerned for my
00:05:50
companions if there was a booby trap
00:05:53
then they would die because I was the
00:05:55
leader I was the one who went in first
00:06:05
to my surprise I found several Japanese
00:06:08
skeletons there must have been more than
00:06:14
10 Roger had stumbled Upon A forgotten
00:06:17
tomb Japanese soldiers had apparently
00:06:20
been trapped Underground when their own
00:06:22
retreating Army set off explosions to
00:06:24
hide the tunnels

that it had been plundered from one of

the Southeast Asian countries conquered

00:07:31

tunnel just as a map had predicted there
00:07:59
were boxes upon boxes of solid gold bars
00:08:03
roas and fuchigami hit on a plan they
00:08:06
would Dynamite the tunnel Clos to
00:08:08
safeguard their find then sell the
00:08:10
Buddha to buy trucks and equipment to
00:08:12
transport the
00:08:19
gold Roger roas took the Buddha home a
00:08:22
potential buyer confirmed that the
00:08:24
Buddha was solid gold he offered Roger 1
00:08:27
million pesos 160 ,000 as a down
00:08:36
payment after the buyer left Roger and
00:08:39
his brother decided to take a closer
00:08:41
look at the Buddha Roger had noticed
00:08:43
that the buyer paid special attention to
00:08:46
the Buddha's
00:08:49
neck my brother and I had a suspicion
00:08:52
that there was a joint an opening inside
00:08:54
the
00:08:55
Buddha so what we did was we got a piece
00:08:59
of wood and we hit the Buddha several
00:09:01
times with this piece of
00:09:08
wood Roger says there were several
00:09:10
handfuls of diamonds inside the Buddha
00:09:13
some were rough cut some fine Roger hid
00:09:17
the diamonds in a
00:09:20
closet that night Roger's brother took
00:09:23
these pictures of Roger with the Buddha
00:09:26
Roger thought the photographs would
00:09:27
protect him but news of Discovery had
00:09:30
already spread fast and far all the way
00:09:32
to the president's Palace in
00:09:36
Manila although the Philippines was
00:09:38
still nominally a democracy Ferdinand
00:09:40
Marcos along with his wife Amala ruled
00:09:43
with virtual
00:09:44
autonomy when Roger found the Buddha in
00:09:47
1971 Marcos was in his prime and his
00:09:50
primary tactic was Brute Force
00:10:01
two months after Roger brought the
00:10:03
Buddha home soldiers swarmed his house
00:10:06
the red ribbons on their rifles
00:10:08
indicated that they were members of
00:10:09
President marcos's Elite Palace guard in
00:10:12
effect his personal
00:10:17
Army out of nowhere the buyer
00:10:21
appeared Roger had been double
00:10:24
crossed with the buyer was another
00:10:26
civilian who seemed to be in charge
00:10:32
he ordered the soldiers to ransack the
00:10:38
house I took everything even the piggy
00:10:42
banks of my
00:10:43
children even the picture album whatever
00:10:47
my wife inherited all her jewelry all
00:10:50
the diamonds in the closet they took all
00:10:54
of
00:10:56
it what would have happened if we had
00:10:59
fought back they would just have killed
00:11:06
us the next day Roger and his brothers
00:11:09
reported the incident to the local
00:11:11
police then he went to visit judge po
00:11:14
Marcos a family friend for whom Roger
00:11:16
had once worked as a
00:11:20
chef I told him judge why did you let
00:11:23
them confiscate my treasure we're
00:11:26
friends he said Roger there is nothing I
00:11:29
can do I said why he said because the
00:11:32

00:12:27

00:12:30
Roger that there was a price on his head
00:12:33
Roger and his family fled to an isolated
00:12:35
jungle
00:12:38
Village while Roger remained secluded
00:12:41
Filipino reporters had already gotten
00:12:43
hold of the story maros did allow the
00:12:46
press to view the Buddha but his
00:12:48
political opponents felt that Marcos had
00:12:50
substituted a fake one opposition
00:12:53
Cabinet member hoping to embarrass the
00:12:55

00:13:49
for Marcos and his minions were outraged
00:13:52
once again Roger fled Manila but 2 weeks
00:13:56
later he says he was tracked down by the
00:13:58
palace guard
00:14:06
three men approached me and pointed
00:14:07
their guns at me they knew me they told
00:14:10
me Roger come with us in the car we will
00:14:12
bring you to
00:14:14
Manila I could not Escape I knew they
00:14:17
were soldiers they had
00:14:27
guns they were so happy
00:14:29
they were drinking whiskey saying so
00:14:32
finally we got him the famous the famed
00:14:35
Roger
00:14:37
roas they called The Palace and they
00:14:39
were speaking English I knew that it was
00:14:42
Marcos that they were talking to because
00:14:44
they addressed him as Mr President
00:14:47
Marcos must have asked them are you sure
00:14:49
it is Roger roas that you captured and
00:14:52
they said yes we're sure thank you Mr
00:14:57
President the boss is is really happy to
00:14:59
hear we have you in our
00:15:10
[Music]
00:15:12
custody the soldiers demanded that Roger
00:15:15
sign a confession authenticating the
00:15:17
Buddha and saying that he had been paid
00:15:19
off by the opposition
00:15:24
party Roger says that when he refused a
00:15:27
palace thugs brought in a crude
00:15:29
electroshock machine fashion from
00:15:31
automobile batteries
00:15:50
[Music]
00:16:01
then they showed me a picture and they
00:16:02
said Roger do you know who this is in
00:16:05
the picture and I said yes that's my
00:16:07
wife and my
00:16:09
kids they said Roger if you love your
00:16:12
family cooperate with us show us where
00:16:16
you found the Golden
00:16:24
Buddha Roger says he endured hours of
00:16:27
torture which permanently damaged the
00:16:29
nerves around his left
00:16:36
eye I made a promise to Mr Fuigi his
00:16:39
name is Albert I told him Albert even if
00:16:43
they try to kill me I will not tell them
00:16:45
where the tunnel
00:16:47
is so they had to persecute
00:16:50
me and while I was conscious I really
00:16:53
tried not to tell them where the
00:16:55
location of the tunnel was that was my
00:16:58
promise to Mr
00:17:00

chami Roger says he was held captive at
00:17:05
a hotel in Manila and tortured almost
00:17:07
daily for several
00:17:11
weeks finally he agreed to sign a
00:17:14
document stating that he had been paid
00:17:16
off by the opposition
00:17:22
party son was a courthouse
00:17:25
[Music]
00:17:29
Roger's captors allowed the worst of his
00:17:31
wounds to heal then they took him to a
00:17:33
courtroom in bagio city and ordered him
00:17:36
to point at marcos's
00:17:41
Buddha he was photographed several times
00:17:44
giving this tasset sign of approval
00:17:46
[Music]
00:18:01
I went to my wife first and my kids my
00:18:05
wife was crying she was surprised she
00:18:08
said what is happening to you you know
00:18:11
they might kill
00:18:13
you and I said just
00:18:16
[Music]
00:18:18
pray I stayed with my family for about
00:18:21
10 minutes and then the soldiers took me
00:18:24
again Roger was sarily reimprisonment
00:18:28
been
00:18:30
tortured I knew they were going to kill
00:18:33
me but you know I'm a locksmith I know
00:18:37
how to open
00:18:39
locks so I went to the restroom there
00:18:42
was a small window with a small
00:18:45
[Music]
00:18:54
lock Roger roas went into hiding and
00:18:57
never again saw the Golden Buddha the
00:19:00
strain of living underground tore his
00:19:02
family apart and eventually led to a
00:19:05
divorce Roger who has remarried
00:19:07
continues to make his home at an
00:19:09
undisclosed location in the
00:19:12
Philippines when Ferdinand Marcos died
00:19:15
in 1989 his personal assets exceeded the
00:19:18
entire Philippine national
00:19:21
treasury Roger roas is convinced that
00:19:24
the source of that wealth was a
00:19:25
countless boxes of gold bars
00:19:29
as for the Buddha no one knows exactly
00:19:31
where it is in 1975 at least two
00:19:34
witnesses claimed to have seen it at one
00:19:36
of marcos's Summer palaces rumor has it
00:19:39
that the Buddha is still somewhere in

labored hard and then in 1 hour they
00:19:58
take it all

00:20:06
painful through a corporation Roger Ro
00:20:08
has formed with a friend in the United

00:20:12
Marcos estate the case is currently on

the docket in

00:20:19
to assure that a large portion of any

to provide education Medical Aid food

and job training in the Philippines

she was breaking up with him and she was
00:22:29
going to a girlfriend's house for dinner
00:22:31
and she would either spend the night
00:22:33
there or come back and spend it at our
00:22:35
house she was not going to go back to
00:22:37
the
00:22:40
apartment Kate visited her girlfriend
00:22:42
from 9:30 to 10:45 p.m she then headed
00:22:46
east along lus Road toward her mother's
00:22:48
house
00:22:51
[Music]
00:23:09
a little bit before midnight the phone
00:23:11
rang it was phone call from the
00:23:13
emergency room of the hospital they said
00:23:16
Kate is there that she's been injured
00:23:19
and I said what's happened and they said
00:23:21
they wouldn't tell me they said we can't
00:23:23
tell you in the phone so my husband and
00:23:25
I drove to the hospital and had been
00:23:28
shot twice in the head she was in a
00:23:32
coma 5 hours later the police arrived at
00:23:35
Kate's apartment her boyfriend was Home
00:23:37
Alone seemingly unaware that his
00:23:39
girlfriend had been shot and was near
00:23:42
death we with the aloc Creek police
00:23:45
department just like to come in and talk
00:23:46
to you a minute sure what's this about
00:23:48
just want to ask you a couple of
00:23:49
questions look around you mind no just
00:23:51
tell me what's going on on just like to
00:23:53
know where you were tonight I was at
00:23:55
with the Caitlin's boyfriend told me
00:23:57
that he had been out with a couple of
00:23:59
friends uh they had eaten they had
00:24:01
played pool and they had a couple of
00:24:03
drinks what's going on while I was there
00:24:07
myself and the other detectives we
00:24:08
discovered a note on top of the kitchen
00:24:10
table and the note read something to the
00:24:12
affect uh hun I'll be home at a certain
00:24:15
time that sort of thing uh it was my
00:24:17
belief that he indicated to me that the
00:24:20
note came from Caitlyn it must have come
00:24:22
from Caitlyn because he was not home and
00:24:24
when he got home he found the note there
00:24:25
yes you did I think you should sit down
00:24:31
Caitlyn's boyfriend uh stated that he
00:24:35
and Caitlyn did argue and they did have
00:24:37
their disagreements but he was not aware
00:24:38
of her uh at any time wanting him to
00:24:40
leave the apartment or move out or
00:24:42
anything that
00:24:43
severe to
00:24:45
re when the police left the apartment
00:24:48
Kate's boyfriend went straight to the
00:24:49
hospital and joined her family in a
00:24:51
bedside
00:24:52
[Music]
00:24:54
vigil less than 24 hours later Caitlyn
00:24:57
darket was de head her boyfriend had
00:25:00
remained by her side until the very
00:25:05
end 6 months after cait linar cat's
00:25:08
murder the Albuquerque Police Department
00:25:10
announced that she'd been the victim of
00:25:11
a quote random act of violence Caitlyn's
00:25:14
mother Lois Duncan refuses to accept
00:25:16
their ruling following her daughter's
00:25:19
death she began to uncover the first
00:25:21
dark hints that Kate is somehow gotten
00:25:22
mixed up with a major criminal
00:25:24
organization to this day the police
00:25:27
continue to pursue the random om victim
00:25:29
Theory but Lois Duncan is convinced that
00:25:31
her daughter was executed by a hired
00:25:34
[Music]
00:25:37
assassin we're all set no questions
00:25:41
asked 2 and a half months before she was
00:25:44
killed Caitlyn and her boyfriend took a
00:25:45
trip to Southern California it was at
00:25:48
that time that Kate apparently became
00:25:50
involved in a lucrative car insurance
00:25:54
scam one of our daughters told me that
00:25:57
that March
00:25:59
a couple of months before the boyfriend
00:26:02
had staged an accident a fake accident
00:26:05
in a car that Kate had rented for him
00:26:08
with our credit card
00:26:29
the scheme was allegedly orchestrated by
00:26:31
an organization comprised of powerful
00:26:33
members of Southern California's
00:26:35
Vietnamese Community everyone in the
00:26:38
accident complained of soft tissue
00:26:39
injuries to the neck and lower back
00:26:42
which were later treated by a doctor who
00:26:44
was part of the
00:26:45
organization ultimately a pargal working
00:26:48
out of an Orange County California law
00:26:50
office handled the insurance claim Kate
00:26:53
and her boyfriend were given $1,500 as
00:26:56
their share of the settlement which they
00:26:57
used to to rent the apartment everything
00:27:00
went well it was evidently a major
00:27:03
multi-million dollar insurance scam and
00:27:06
Kate had found out about
00:27:08
it at the time we didn't know how we
00:27:11
could fit this in with with her shooting
00:27:14
but all of a sudden there was another
00:27:15
element there something that suggested a
00:27:18
possible motive because if Kate was
00:27:21
breaking up with her boyfriend at that
00:27:22
time then maybe maybe she was a danger
00:27:25
to the people who had arranged this
00:27:29
a few weeks after Kate's death Lois is
00:27:32
putting her daughter's Affairs in order
00:27:33
when she made a disturbing Discovery
00:27:36
three phone calls had been made from
00:27:38
Kate's apartment at virtually the same
00:27:40
moment she
00:27:43
died in fact they were made just minutes
00:27:45
after she was pronounced dead when her
00:27:47
boyfriend was with us at the hospital
00:27:50
and the apartment should have been
00:27:53
unoccupied the number turned out to
00:27:55
belong to a Vietnamese pargal in Orange
00:27:59
County uh a pargal who lived in Santa
00:28:02
Ana but worked in a law office in Garden
00:28:04
Grove and it was the same pargal who set
00:28:08
up the car
00:28:10
wrecks Lois wanted uh me to look into
00:28:15
Caitlyn's uh relationship with a
00:28:18
boyfriend uh she felt that Lois felt
00:28:21
that not everything was right there uh
00:28:24
that there had been uh some real
00:28:26
problems and that the police had failed
00:28:28
to to take a look at it what was going
00:28:31
on Mike Gallagher first met with Kate's
00:28:33
former landlord mostly with her
00:28:34
boyfriend's friends they didn't treat I
00:28:36
had the impression from
00:28:38
Neighbors that Caitlyn was more afraid
00:28:42
of uh her boyfriend's friends rather
00:28:46
than her
00:28:49
boyfriend she would get Disturbed when
00:28:51
they only spoke Vietnamese around her uh
00:28:54
the the friends uh her boy boyfriend's
00:28:57
friends tended to uh make fun of her
00:29:03
uh and cause friction between her and a
00:29:05
boyfriend and she did not like his
00:29:08
friends uh I think the feeling from what
00:29:10
I could gather was Mutual how come you
00:29:12
let them treat me so lousy they do not
00:29:14
treat you that way they do they make fun
00:29:16
of evidently things were much more
00:29:19
stormy than we had ever guessed and it
00:29:22
wasn't just a little lover spat there
00:29:24
was something very major happening in
00:29:26
Kate's life after she moved in with her
00:29:30
boyfriend and she told us she was very
00:29:33
sorry that she had ever let him move in
00:29:35
with her it had been a big mistake she
00:29:38
wanted him to move out so her girlfriend
00:29:39
could move in
00:29:42
instead Mike Gallagher was able to
00:29:44
obtain a copy of the note which Kate
00:29:46
allegedly left for her boyfriend on the
00:29:48
day of the shooting he compared it with
00:29:50
another sample of her
00:29:54
handwriting it was obvious just by
00:29:56
comparing the handwritings of the not
00:29:58
note with uh Caitlyn's writing that she
00:30:01
did not write that note and that led me
00:30:04
to believe that within hours of her
00:30:06
shooting um her boyfriend was already
00:30:09
lying to
00:30:11
police the landlord also told Gallagher
00:30:14
that on the night Caitlyn died three of
00:30:16
her boyfriend's Associates were in her
00:30:18
apartment drinking Kate's mother is
00:30:20
convinced that one of them made the
00:30:22
phone calls to Santa
00:30:25
Anna I don't think that the Vietnamese
00:30:27
connection
00:30:29
uh is related to this case uh thus far I
00:30:32
have not received any information and to
00:30:35
indicate uh positively that the
00:30:37
Vietnamese is involved in this
00:30:41
homicide was Caitlyn arette executed
00:30:43
because she had learned too much about
00:30:45
the auto insurance scam while Kate's
00:30:48
family and Mike Gallagher were pursuing
00:30:50
their investigation the police were
00:30:52
going in a completely different
00:30:55
direction I'm trying to cooperate with
00:30:57
you guys I'm telling you the truth I
00:30:59
don't remember what 6 months after the
00:31:01
murder an informant led the Albuquerque
00:31:03
Police to a young man named Robert
00:31:05
Garcia in this AR killing Garcia was
00:31:07
interrogated for two hours finally he
00:31:10
admitted that on July 16th 1989 he was
00:31:13
out with three friends when one of them
00:31:15
shot a woman in her car on a
00:31:21
dare based on Garcia's statement police
00:31:24
arrested Dennis Martinez henal oscoo and
00:31:27
Miguel Garcia who is not related to
00:31:29
Robert according to Robert Garcia it was
00:31:32
Miguel who did the actual
00:31:37
shooting on the same day that Robert
00:31:39
Garcia was interrogated the police
00:31:42
discovered that es ccoo had recently
00:31:44
sold his car a brown Chevrolet Camaro
00:31:47
suddenly an eyewitness report that they
00:31:49
had initially disregarded took on a new
00:31:52
significance on the night of the murder
00:31:55
a truck driver said he saw Brown Camaro
00:31:57
chasing a young woman in a car similar
00:31:59
to Caitlyn's in the area where she'd be
00:32:01
gunned down an hour
00:32:13
later the police believed that the men
00:32:15
in the Camaro had been out joy riding
00:32:17
and Kate became their random
00:32:22
victim it was later learned that Robert
00:32:25
Garcia had in fact been in jail on the
00:32:27
night cait was shot ultimately all
00:32:30
charges against the three suspects were
00:32:32
dropped for lack of sufficient evidence
00:32:34
well talk to you guys later we certainly
00:32:37
appreciate you coming in and talking to
00:32:39
us again and all your cooperation got a
00:32:42
few questions finally under pressure
00:32:43
from Kate's family the police questioned
00:32:45
her boyfriend once again of this time he
00:32:48
admitted that he and a friend from
00:32:50
Albuquerque had taken part in the auto
00:32:52
insurance scan our relationship was
00:32:53
going great we had our arguments but
00:32:56
nevertheless charges have never been
00:32:57
pressed against him or any of his
00:32:59
friends in connection with that scam in
00:33:02
addition Caitlyn's boyfriend is not
00:33:04
considered a suspect in her murder you
00:33:06
or anytime in the past been involved in
00:33:08
a Vietnamese gang I I think it's
00:33:10
important for the police to remember and
00:33:14
anybody who looks at this case to
00:33:16
remember that Caitlyn's boyfriend's
00:33:20
friends were involved with large scale
00:33:24
organized criminal activity in Los
00:33:26
Angeles and multi-million dollar
00:33:29
insurance frauds I don't think the
00:33:32
police ever took that
00:33:37
seriously Caitlyn Arquette was killed in
00:33:40
July of
00:33:41
1989 in this most bizarre case there
00:33:44
seemed to be two viable theories leaving
00:33:46
Kate's family to wonder who in fact was
00:33:48
responsible and why did they target
00:33:52
Kate our family doesn't have any real
00:33:55
idea who pulled the trigger on Kate the
00:33:58
one thing we feel very strong about is
00:34:01
that she was not shot randomly as just
00:34:04
people out on a spree having fun
00:34:06
shooting a pretty girl in a red car we
00:34:08
believe Kate was killed because she was
00:34:10
going to talk was going to expose
00:34:13
illegal activities involving her
00:34:15
boyfriend and his
00:34:17
companions uh it might have been that
00:34:20
she was shot by the Vietnamese it might
00:34:23
have been that they hired someone else
00:34:24
to shoot her the one thing we're
00:34:26
absolutely sure of in in our own minds
00:34:29
is that this was not a random shooting
00:34:31
Kate was
00:34:34
[Music]
00:34:47
assassinated next a family's poignant
00:34:50
search for the young girl they raised as
00:34:52
their own
00:34:56
[Music]
00:35:03
on August 4th 1990 24-year-old Shannon
00:35:06
Tim Payne was married in San Francisco
00:35:08
California surrounded by all eight of
00:35:11
her brothers and sisters but one very
00:35:13
important person was not there to share
00:35:16
the joy of that special
00:35:18
[Music]
00:35:20
day 20 years earlier when Shannon was
00:35:23
still just a toddler a 4-year-old girl
00:35:25
named Terry ly Smith had come to lived
00:35:27
temporarily with the Tim payes in Orange
00:35:30
California she stayed for 6 years and in
00:35:33
every way became a member of the
00:35:38
family it seems that some families no
00:35:41
matter how large have more than enough
00:35:43
love to go around the Tayes have not
00:35:45
seen Terry Smith for more than a decade
00:35:48
and they feel that without her their
00:35:49
family will never be complete perhaps
00:35:52
someone watching tonight can help bring
00:35:54
Terry ly Smith back to the ones who
00:35:56
still love her as their own
00:36:01
John and Jerry Tim pay met in
00:36:03
1945 he was an intern specializing in
00:36:06
obstetrics she was a
00:36:08
nurse between 1953 and 1965 John and
00:36:13
Jerry had nine children six boys and
00:36:15
three
00:36:18
girls the tempay household was
00:36:20
boisterous and bustling the entire
00:36:22
family loved animals and enjoyed an
00:36:24
active outdoor life
00:36:28
in the summer of 1967 at the ranch where
00:36:31
they boarded their two horses the Tim
00:36:33
pays came to know the manager of the
00:36:35
ranch herb Smith I tell you what why
00:36:37
don't you go get this big guy some
00:36:39
carrots Terry help Shannon with the
00:36:41
carrots wait please was that your little
00:36:43
girl herb herb was divorced his daughter
00:36:46
Terry and Son Mark lived with him in a
00:36:48
small trailer but herb felt that the
00:36:51
ranch was no place for a young girl he
00:36:53
believed that Terry needed a real family
00:36:57
hey there you are I think the first time
00:36:59
I saw her I thought she was rather for
00:37:01
laor here was this little girl on this
00:37:05
large Ranch and while she loved horses
00:37:07
there were no children for her to play
00:37:09
with they were mostly
00:37:13
Cowboys I was drawn to her because she
00:37:15
was so sweet and she came she was so
00:37:17
happy to come and talk to me and uh I
00:37:21
just decided to talk to my husband about
00:37:23
it and see if it would be feasible for
00:37:24
us to take another one we always had an
00:37:26
extra bed in the the house for
00:37:30
somebody herb Smith took Jerry Tim pay
00:37:33
up on her generous offer in return herb
00:37:36
insisted that the Tim pays allow him to
00:37:38
take care of their horses free of charge
00:37:41
they promised herb that they would bring
00:37:42
Terry to visit him whenever he
00:37:45
wanted in August of 1967 Terry Smith
00:37:49
moved into the already overflowing Tim
00:37:51
pay home hi Herb hi is she okay about
00:37:54
stay I think in the beginning uh she was
00:37:57
little girl that was staying with us but
00:37:59
as she as the time grew longer and
00:38:01
longer she stayed with us as a sister
00:38:05
and she was included in everything in
00:38:07
the family so she therefore became part
00:38:09
of the
00:38:11
family all the Tim pay children grew to
00:38:13
love Terry but for Shannon the youngest
00:38:16
Terry's arrival was a dream come
00:38:20
true there was a succession of boys in
00:38:23
my family and I was you know the
00:38:24
youngest little girl and I couldn't
00:38:26
really hang out with them because they
00:38:27
didn't want me
00:38:29
to I think Terry and I were especially
00:38:33
close because we were so close in age
00:38:35
and things seem to happen to us at the
00:38:37
same time we we both learned to swim
00:38:41
around the same time and you know she
00:38:43
basically taught me how to ride and we
00:38:45
got the chickenpox at the same
00:38:49
time kind of scary for
00:38:54
you I think Terry loved being part of
00:38:57
the family family she'd call them her
00:38:58
brothers she'd call them her sisters and
00:39:02
I think she enjoyed it very
00:39:05
much years passed the temporary
00:39:08
Arrangement had in effect become
00:39:10
permanent none of the Tim pays could
00:39:12
remember life without
00:39:15
Terry she shared in all the family's
00:39:17
Joys and in all their
00:39:20
sorrows on May 2nd 1972 the family was
00:39:24
scarred by tragedy 46-year-old John Tim
00:39:27
pay succumbed to
00:39:33
cancer Jerry Tim Payne was forced to go
00:39:36
back to work as a nurse because she had
00:39:38
teenage children who could take care of
00:39:40
the younger ones at night Jerry worked
00:39:42
the graveyard shift that way she could
00:39:44
be at home every afternoon when the
00:39:46
children returned from school and every
00:39:48
morning to see them
00:39:51
off of course it was tough but there was
00:39:54
nobody else to do it and I decided I had
00:39:57
to do it there was that was going to be
00:39:59
my future and I had nine children or 10
00:40:02
children to raise hi everybody so I did
00:40:04
was work oh it's fine I'm just a little
00:40:07
tired is everybody up Shannon and Terry
00:40:10
are still sleeping I think Brendan is
00:40:12
too it's okay money became a very big
00:40:16
concern and my mom was not around as
00:40:18
much anymore because she was now the um
00:40:21
primary supporter in our family so that
00:40:25
also changed because she used to to be
00:40:27
there all the time come on girls it's
00:40:30
time to get up come on even though the
00:40:33
Tim pay family managed to cope having
00:40:35
one more mouth to feed was now a problem
00:40:38
come on with a heavy heart Jerry Tim pay
00:40:40
realized that she would have to send
00:40:42
Terry back to her father right awake
00:40:44
don't bother sitting down go brush your
00:40:45
teeth and when I told the kids they said
00:40:48
no they didn't want me to send her back
00:40:51
and I said but it has to be and I don't
00:40:53
want to do it but it's one of those
00:40:55
things that happens and she has her
00:40:58
father and she's going to go with
00:41:02
him in the summer of 1974 herb Smith
00:41:05
came to take his daughter home Terry had
00:41:08
lived with the Tim pays for more than 6
00:41:10
years Terry come over on Saturday she
00:41:13
was very sad she didn't want to leave um
00:41:16
we were her family she'd grown attached
00:41:18
to
00:41:21
us goodbye everyone bye bye on the other
00:41:25
hand I think Terry was really excited to
00:41:27
go home and and live with her father
00:41:29
again she loved her father a great deal
00:41:32
and um when she went to visit him on the
00:41:34
weekends it was always a real special
00:41:38
thing and she came home with many
00:41:39
stories of what they did and where they
00:41:41
went and if it was summertime she would
00:41:43
come and spend a week with us and she
00:41:46
loved coming back she loved having in
00:41:48
the swimming pool there she loved having
00:41:51
uh the friends that she had made and the
00:41:53
family around her and unfortunately uh
00:41:57
these started to get less and less
00:41:58
because they had moved to a different
00:42:00
part of the state and it was difficult
00:42:02
to get her
00:42:05
here in 1980 when Terry was 16 she
00:42:08
surprised the Tim pays with one final
00:42:11
visit well it was great seeing you Terry
00:42:13
you should come by more often the
00:42:15
reunion was bittersweet Terry was no
00:42:17
longer living with her father and though
00:42:19
she had brought her boyfriend with her
00:42:20
to meet the Tim pays she seemed uneasy
00:42:23
and uncertain about her future by by
00:42:26
Shannon
00:42:27
got a sense of feeling that she was not
00:42:29
as happy as she could be we talked more
00:42:32
and then she her friend said that it was
00:42:35
time to go and they left and that was
00:42:37
the last time I saw
00:42:41
her I didn't realize that would be the
00:42:43
last time I saw Terry because if I would
00:42:45
have known that I would have stopped her
00:42:47
there would be no way I would have let
00:42:48
her
00:42:49
go it was very confusing and um we were
00:42:53
trying to get her to stay and we never
00:42:55
asked where she was going cuz we were
00:42:56
trying so hard to get her to stay and we
00:42:59
lost
00:43:04
touch I don't think that we ever forgot
00:43:07
Terry everyone has a special place in
00:43:11
their hearts for Terry they have their
00:43:13
own special relationship and they they
00:43:15
would not forget that and they they want
00:43:18
to make sure that she's safe and
00:43:20
secure they miss her a lot everybody
00:43:22
talks about her all the time you know
00:43:25
when we reminisce we reminisce and
00:43:27
everything always includes Terry you
00:43:30
