Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 2, Episode 18

March 09, 2017 / 42:53

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five intriguing cases, including the disappearance of Flight 19 in the Bermuda Triangle, a family rescue in Mexico, a love story involving a convicted killer, and a controversial healing technique.

The first case discusses Flight 19, a squadron of five Avenger torpedo bombers that vanished after a training flight in 1945. Aviation investigator John Meyer believes navigational errors led to their crash, and he attempts to recover one of the planes from the ocean.

Next, the episode recounts the harrowing story of the Do family, who were involved in a serious car accident in Mexico. Strangers, an American couple, came to their aid, ultimately saving their lives. The couple, Dr. Nancy Neth Hannon and her husband John, later reunite with the Do family to reflect on the incident.

The episode also features the story of Donna Moses Brown, who fell in love with convicted murderer Michael Wayne Brown. Their relationship led to an escape from prison, and despite the chaos, they remain married today.

Lastly, the episode examines the controversial healing technique known as Therapeutic Touch, showcasing its use in various medical situations and the differing opinions on its effectiveness.

TL;DR

it became known as The Legend of the
00:01:37
Lost Patrol just after World War II a
00:01:41
squadron of five torpedo bombers took
00:01:43
off from Florida just five hours later
00:01:47
the entire Squadron vanished
00:01:50
where over the Bermuda Triangle where
00:01:55
else Fort Lauderdale
00:01:58
Florida the Navy Squadron Flight 19 was
00:02:02
on a routine training flight it vanished
00:02:05
somewhere off the Florida coast in an
00:02:08
area known as the graveyard of the
00:02:10
Atlantic the Bermuda
00:02:14
Triangle for 9 years Aviation
00:02:17
investigator John Meyer has studied the
00:02:20
flight plant and radio Transmissions of
00:02:22
the Lost Squadron when I read the story
00:02:26
and I read the transcripts of the radio
00:02:29
conversation
00:02:30
uh it triggered a response in me and I
00:02:33
said if this is true and this is true
00:02:36
then then I think I can find one of the
00:02:38
airplanes Meyer has never believed that
00:02:41
the Squadron disappeared because of a
00:02:43
mysterious Force coming from the Bermuda
00:02:46
Triangle we must have got lost after
00:02:48
that last turn he believes the planes
00:02:51
all crashed in the ocean due to a series
00:02:53
of navigational errors I got a D you
00:02:57
read Meyer is convinced that one of the
00:02:59
The Avengers was forced to ditch in the
00:03:01
water just 30 Mi off the coast of Cape
00:03:04
Canaveral
00:03:06
Florida but finding a single Avenger in
00:03:09
the ocean was an overwhelming task until
00:03:13
a national tragedy made it
00:03:18
possible when Salvage Crews searched for
00:03:21
debris from the space shuttle Challenger
00:03:23
they located the wreckage of a plane it
00:03:26
was at a depth of 400 ft we knew we had
00:03:30
a wreck but we didn't know what type of
00:03:32
airplane it was and to say I was on the
00:03:35
edge of my seat along with my colleagues
00:03:37
would be an
00:03:38
understatement an underwater survey
00:03:40
revealed that the plane was an Avenger
00:03:43
torpedo pomber could it be one of the
00:03:46
planes of the Lost Patrol more than 40
00:03:49
Years of coral and Barnacle growth made
00:03:52
positive identification impossible the
00:03:55
only way to prove whether this is indeed
00:03:58
Flight 19 aircraft is going to be raise
00:04:00
that sucker out of the water I and my
00:04:03
partners believe that we're correct but
00:04:05
it'll remain a mystery until we can
00:04:07
raise the
00:04:09
airplane John Meyer and his Partners
00:04:12
began a massive recovery operation
00:04:14
called project 19 30 Mi off the Florida
00:04:18
coast a fourman submersible was launched
00:04:21
to pinpoint the location of the plane
00:04:24
previous Dives had shown the engine and
00:04:26
propeller had separated from the main
00:04:28
body of the plane
00:04:30
there was a Navy Bureau number on the
00:04:32
engine there was an engine
00:04:33
manufacturer's number on the engine and
00:04:35
there was also a manufacturer stamp
00:04:37
number in the engine block so if we
00:04:39
raise that engine we should be able to
00:04:41
get a positive ID from that now as to
00:04:43
how how much corrosion has occurred over
00:04:45
the last 40 almost 46 years now it's
00:04:49
difficult to
00:04:50
say the submersible robotic arm
00:04:53
Maneuvers nylon straps around their
00:04:55
propeller and engine housing a 50 ton CR
00:04:59
train begins to slowly raise the
00:05:01
wreckage from Beneath the Sea 35 minutes
00:05:05
later the propeller and engine assembly
00:05:08
is hoisted on
00:05:12
board the condition of the wreckage
00:05:14
kills any possibility of immediate
00:05:19
identification should be our last dive
00:05:21
that we have to to go down for to do to
00:05:23
do a hookup the crew plans the next and
00:05:26
most crucial phase the recovery of the
00:05:29
plan's wing and fuselage section Mike
00:05:33
and myself will be up front Dave and
00:05:34
John this is our next to last schedule
00:05:36
dive this one hopefully will complete
00:05:39
the rigging and we will pull the plane
00:05:41
up on the next
00:05:43
lift 3 hours later the rigging is
00:05:46
complete the crew of the submersible
00:05:48
attaches the primary lift cable to the
00:05:51
harness that cradles the sunken
00:05:56
Avenger the huge crane begins to lift
00:05:59
the plane 400 ft to the surface the
00:06:02
plane weighs about three times more than
00:06:05
expected the harness and cable strain
00:06:07
under the
00:06:08
weight night closes in making the
00:06:11
recovery more
00:06:13
dangerous then suddenly the crane steel
00:06:17
cable go
00:06:20
slack the plane either collapsed or
00:06:23
something CED it wasn't even pulling up
00:06:26
when it actually happened and some went
00:06:28
boom and now there's not much
00:06:31
load okay what went back down in what
00:06:34
shape we don't know what
00:06:36
broke we'll take a look as it comes out
00:06:40
the cable is snapped in two sending the
00:06:42
Avenger back to its watery grave very
00:06:45
disappointing but we're not dead we're
00:06:47
going back we're going to get it just
00:06:50
complicates things oh we'll have a game
00:06:53
plan first thing in the
00:06:55
morning it's the uh Bermuda Triangle
00:06:58
continues its way
00:07:01
[Music]
00:07:04
just after Dawn the submersible is
00:07:06
launched to relocate the wreckage it's
00:07:10
still sitting in the same position that
00:07:12
it was before which is upside down all
00:07:14
the rigging is still on it so all we've
00:07:16
got to do is get down there hook on to
00:07:18
it and it's going to come up we're going
00:07:19
to see it
00:07:23
today things are in position as good as
00:07:26
they can be we're about to start the
00:07:28
lift bring it up very slow very easy see
00:07:30
what we can do for reinforcing video
00:07:32
while we go and hopefully get it on Deck
00:07:36
an hour and a half later the plane is
00:07:38
less than 100 ft from the surface but
00:07:41
there's a problem the wings are
00:07:45
buckling divers are immediately
00:07:48
dispatched we put straps about 3/4 of
00:07:51
the way out along the wings cuz when it
00:07:52
was down at 40 or 50 ft even in these
00:07:55
light Seas the heave of the boat was
00:07:58
causing the wind Wings to Flap up and
00:08:00
down about 2 ft we don't want to stress
00:08:02
it so we put straps around the outer
00:08:04
portions of those wings brought them up
00:08:06
tight to give them a little extra
00:08:09
[Music]
00:08:12
support 2 and 1/2 hours later the plane
00:08:15
breaks the surface for John Meyer the
00:08:19
recovery of the Aventure marks the end
00:08:21
of a 9-year search you know it's it's
00:08:24
strange you'd think you'd be elated and
00:08:26
everybody screaming and jumping up and
00:08:28
down I
00:08:30
it's there but it's subdued you know
00:08:32
it's tempered by KN some good people
00:08:36
died long time
00:08:38
ago and uh we're not going to forget
00:08:43
them the wreckage is taken to marine
00:08:46
land near St Augustine Florida there
00:08:49
numbers are collected from various parts
00:08:51
of the
00:08:53
aircraft several of these numbers do
00:08:55
partially match those of the Lost Flight
00:08:58
19 but unfortunately Jon and his team
00:09:01
are still unable to prove the recovered
00:09:03
plane belong to the missing Squadron
00:09:06
once again the Bermuda Triangle has
00:09:09
guarded its secrets and the fate of the
00:09:12
Lost Patrol remains an unsolved
00:09:17
[Music]
00:09:19
mystery next a family's harrowing
00:09:22
accident and the two mysterious
00:09:24
strangers who rescue them from certain
00:09:28
death
00:09:36

00:09:39

00:09:42
way to a Christmas celebration with
00:09:45
[Music]

00:09:54
nightmare you're a stranger in a foreign
00:09:57
country you don't know the language
00:09:59
you're Gravely injured alone on an
00:10:01
isolated Road and if you don't get help
00:10:03
quick you face certain
00:10:07
death the trip began 2 days before
00:10:10
Christmas six members of the Dober
00:10:13
family and one friend packed the car and
00:10:15
headed off on the long drive to Mexico
00:10:19
turn around sit down
00:10:21
please we had just purchased a new
00:10:24
customized van and it was loaded with
00:10:26
everything we had a television and we
00:10:27
had uh uh refrigerator so we were
00:10:30
stocked up and just make an extremely
00:10:32
good time and having a good
00:10:35
time the drive from Atlanta to see.
00:10:38
Victoria was about 12200 miles the Dos
00:10:42
plan to complete the trip in just 48
00:10:45
hours and arrived by Christmas day to
00:10:47
save time they stopped only for gas and
00:10:50
the adults took turns driving we got
00:10:53
into Ledo Texas Saturday morning which
00:10:56
was Christmas Eve Andross the Border but
00:10:59
feather long we got it uh in the
00:11:01
afternoon it really began to get cold
00:11:02
and and began to snow the weather was
00:11:06
getting really bad and I had been to
00:11:08
Mexico several times in the past and I
00:11:11
had never experienced anything like this
00:11:12
in my life it was extremely cold rainy
00:11:15
snowy it was just very uncharacteristic
00:11:17
for the area Vance was behind the wheel
00:11:20
when they crossed the border they were
00:11:22
just an hour away from montere the last
00:11:24
major city before their final
00:11:27
destination supposed to go over a
00:11:29
mountain range to get to the city and
00:11:31
then we were diverted there was a
00:11:33
policeman in the road we need to go to
00:11:36
monter Vance learned the main road
00:11:39
through the mountains had been closed
00:11:42
and we were had to circle around the
00:11:43
mountings and come into Monteray from a
00:11:45
more easterly Direction and the snow
00:11:48
began to really pick up and it was a
00:11:50
real driving snow it wasn't coming just
00:11:52
straight down and and the sides of the
00:11:54
road began to be coated we can see it on
00:11:56
the Hills ant want don't you slow down a
00:11:59
little bit there buddy it's getting a
00:12:00
little bit slick out there okay yeah my
00:12:03
father had just told me to to even be
00:12:05
extremely careful moments after he had
00:12:08
told me that I suddenly lost
00:12:23
control I don't know how much time
00:12:25
elapsed I don't know how long I was out
00:12:27
I have no idea if it was 5 minutes or an
00:12:29
hour but uh I woke up and it was just a
00:12:34
matter of moments when someone opened
00:12:36
the door and pulled me out and the pain
00:12:39
that I felt at that time was absolutely
00:12:42
excruciating Vance was completely
00:12:44
unaware of the tragedy that surrounded
00:12:46
him the four occupants of the other
00:12:49
vehicle had been killed instantly
00:12:52
several people in his own car were
00:12:54
barely alive a passing American couple
00:12:57
who just happened to be driving driving
00:12:59
by joined the rescue effort my father he
00:13:02
was taken and and put in the back of a
00:13:05
pickup
00:13:06
truck as well as my
00:13:08
grandfather my grandfather had received
00:13:11
just severe head injuries to the point
00:13:13
of his skull was sh his cut his head was
00:13:16
just cut really badly and U the doctors
00:13:20
later told us that by him putting being
00:13:23
put in the back of a pickup truck
00:13:24
actually saved his life because the cold
00:13:27
weather actually help seal up and clot
00:13:30
the
00:13:31
blood through a haze of terrible pain
00:13:34
Vance realized that the two Americans
00:13:36
had taken charge of the rescue operation
00:13:39
my cousin Tommy was uh pulled from the
00:13:42
van and his uh vital signs were taken
00:13:46
and it was assumed that he was dead I'm
00:13:48
still not getting aul pulling other
00:13:51
people out and trying to revive the ones
00:13:54
that they thought were still alive the
00:13:57
nearest clinic was in monter
00:13:58
approximately an hour's Drive the
00:14:01
unidentified American woman stayed by
00:14:03
Vance's side during the entire
00:14:06
trip the hospital I was taken into was
00:14:09
was unlike anything I'd ever seen before
00:14:12
it reminded me almost like a mash unit
00:14:14
or a something out of a war movie we
00:14:18
we're trying to help you can you tell
00:14:21
me she told me that my leg was broken
00:14:24
really bad and she told me that they
00:14:26
didn't have any anesthesia that they had
00:14:28
to put it in traction she said they were
00:14:30
going to have to put a pin through my
00:14:32
knee where's everybody else where are
00:14:34
the others there's a man and a woman and
00:14:37
a child here the nurse was referring to
00:14:40
Vance's cousin Tommy his friend Maryann
00:14:43
and Tommy's son David the nurse told me
00:14:46
that they were injured severely they had
00:14:48
head injuries and she didn't think that
00:14:50
they would make it through the night
00:14:52
there were appeared to be no sign of my
00:14:53
father and grandfather and I had all
00:14:56
kind of thoughts go through my head I
00:14:58
mean I mean they weren't at the hospital
00:15:00
I didn't know maybe they were taken to a
00:15:01
Mor I me I had had no idea and no one in
00:15:04
the hospital knew where they were
00:15:07
at Christmas morning dawned with a
00:15:10
Christmas miracle Vance woke up to find
00:15:13
that his cousin had escaped unharmed and
00:15:16
that Maran and Tommy were going to pull
00:15:19
through he was surprised to see that the
00:15:22
mysterious woman his Guardian Angel was
00:15:25
still with him Merry
00:15:27
Christmas Merry Christmas it brought a
00:15:30
lot of joy to me knowing that she was
00:15:32
there and she um she brought us both a
00:15:36
little Christmas present and she spent
00:15:38
Christmas morning with us there the
00:15:40
woman raised Vance's Spirits even higher
00:15:43
when she told him that his father and
00:15:46
grandfather were still alive my
00:15:48
grandfather they're going to be fine
00:15:50
they're at another clinic and my husband
00:15:52
is with them right
00:15:53
now you remember anything about last
00:15:57
night
00:15:59
I was driving and she told me that her
00:16:01
and her husband were on vacation and
00:16:03
they happened upon the accident just
00:16:05
moments after it
00:16:09
occurred I've always wondered what would
00:16:11
have happened had they not come upon the
00:16:14
accident because we were an hour or so
00:16:18
outside of this major city and there was
00:16:20
nothing out there at all and these
00:16:22
people just showed up doctors showed up
00:16:26
out of nowhere I feel like it was
00:16:29
Miracle uh many times it's an accident
00:16:31
and you know we just drive by an
00:16:33
accident but uh and they could have done
00:16:35
that that day but they did they stopped
00:16:37
and through their stopping they saved
00:16:40
the lives of our family and we just want
00:16:42
to say thank
00:16:44
you
00:16:46
update one of our viewers in Houston
00:16:49
Texas realized that she had heard the
00:16:52
very same story from her friends Dr
00:16:55
Nancy neth Hannon and her husband John
00:16:58
the hannans were in fact the Good
00:17:01
Samaritans who had rescued the do
00:17:07
family a few weeks later the do family
00:17:10
gathered to meet the hannans and compare
00:17:12
memories of that frightening Christmas
00:17:14
Eve like I guess as a physician that was
00:17:19
one of the most helpless feelings I've
00:17:21
ever had I mean to have the knowledge
00:17:25
and everything but not the tools to do
00:17:26
anything it was just was really
00:17:29
frustrating to us you were like an angel
00:17:31
from God both of you that you were right
00:17:34
there at the time and and had you not
00:17:36
been there uh the whole family uh you
00:17:39
know could have possibly died and you
00:17:42
were so instrumental and so we just
00:17:45
wanted to say thank
00:17:46
you for the do family that Gathering was
00:17:50
a chance to say thank you and to finally
00:17:53
close this dramatic chapter of their
00:17:57
lives
00:18:02
next sometimes falling in love can take
00:18:04
an unexpected twist especially if you
00:18:07
fall in love with a convicted
00:18:20
killer Mogi Oklahoma all right make a
00:18:24
wish and blow those candles out Sher
00:18:27
nickerson's fifth birthday party was
00:18:29
hardly a happy event she was living with
00:18:32
her uncle's family and though they did
00:18:34
their best it was impossible to pretend
00:18:38
that anyone was happy I was numb I
00:18:41
didn't I didn't feel anything I wasn't
00:18:44
happy it was the worst birthday of my
00:18:46
life no surprise sher's party included a
00:18:50
number of uninvited guests Oklahoma
00:18:53
state troopers were posted
00:18:57
everywhere the troopers were there
00:18:59
because two lifers had escaped from a
00:19:01
nearby Oklahoma prison just 9 days
00:19:04
earlier and sher's mother Donna Moses
00:19:07
Brown drove the getaway car I'm Michael
00:19:12
I know I'm Donna at first Donna thought
00:19:16
that she was simply doing a good deed
00:19:18
when she was introduced to Michael Wayne
00:19:21
Brown her church group had started
00:19:24
writing letters to convicts to help them
00:19:26
find spiritual comfort you know I don't
00:19:29
know if I can make it in this place if
00:19:30
it wasn't for those letters that I get
00:19:32
from you oh well you know whatever we
00:19:34
can do to help she was lonely she hadn't
00:19:37
had anybody for a very long time and she
00:19:40
needed that companionship someone to
00:19:42
talk to her about things and show her
00:19:44
love and affection and that's what she
00:19:46
got from
00:19:47
him how you
00:19:49
doing I'm okay he spoke with her and I
00:19:54
think that that's pretty much all that
00:19:56
mattered he wrote her it was somebody
00:19:58
new in her life and uh I think that it
00:20:03
probably could have been anybody to him
00:20:05
but she was the victim that fell into
00:20:07
the the line of fire I guess look what I
00:20:10
brought
00:20:11
you Mike Wayne Brown like a lot of the
00:20:14
men are incarcerated for long periods of
00:20:16
time they really don't have any concern
00:20:18
for other people's rights or or lives
00:20:21
they've got all the Time in the World to
00:20:23
scam to scheme on people and they get
00:20:26
quite good at it they can say you a
00:20:29
chainsaw the desert she wrote him every
00:20:31
day she talked to him on the phone every
00:20:33
day it kind of started and went full
00:20:36
force there was no slowing
00:20:39
down I think Donna Brown was under the
00:20:41
misconception that Mike Wayne Brown was
00:20:43
just a misunderstood young man who
00:20:46
through unfortunate circumstances was
00:20:48
doing time it seemed that everyone but
00:20:51
donana knew Michael Brown was a
00:20:54
coldblooded
00:20:57
killer
00:20:59
9 years earlier when Brown was 18 he and
00:21:02
another teenager Dennis Woodward
00:21:04
burglarized an insurance office in
00:21:07
Oklahoma what are you doing here huh
00:21:09
what are you doing here shut up Richard
00:21:12
Sullivan picked the wrong time to stop
00:21:14
by the office turn around turn around
00:21:18
and face the wall give me the gun turn
00:21:26
around Brown was very
00:21:28
very hyper after that event he said I I
00:21:31
killed him I killed him almost bragging
00:21:33
about it he looks over at Woodward and
00:21:35
he said if I had one more bullet I would
00:21:36
have shot his eyes out and uh thereafter
00:21:40
uh they went off to have breakfast at a
00:21:43
local
00:21:44
restaurant while Brown was dining on his
00:21:46
bacon and eggs 41-year-old Richard
00:21:49
Sullivan bled to death on his office
00:21:52
floor he left behind a wife and a young
00:21:55
daughter Michael Wayne Brown was put on
00:21:58
death row however the sentence was later
00:22:01
commuted to life without parole by the
00:22:03
time Brown met Donna Moses he had
00:22:06
already spent 9 years in prison Donna
00:22:09
had been married twice tragically both
00:22:12
of her husbands had been murdered it was
00:22:15
ironic that Donna now found herself in
00:22:18
love with a killer it was consuming her
00:22:21
too much she didn't have time for
00:22:24
anything else but him I mean she could
00:22:26
visit him every weekend and it was like
00:22:29
the whole week was preparing to see him
00:22:32
this is your
00:22:34
copy there she is hi Hi and then just 3
00:22:39
months after they met do you donos take
00:22:42
this man to be your lawfully wetted
00:22:43
husband to love and to cherish him from
00:22:45
the state forward as long as you both
00:22:46
shall live I
00:22:51
do I love you love you moments after the
00:22:56
ceremony the honeymoon was over over
00:22:58
Brown was put back in shackles and his
00:23:00
prison orange and returned to his cell
00:23:04
Donna sent her children to stay with
00:23:06
relatives and Then followed Brown as he
00:23:08
was transferred from prison to prison
00:23:11
sometimes living in her car Michael
00:23:14
Wayne Brown became Donna's whole world
00:23:18
he was eventually transferred to a
00:23:20
minimum security prison it was a perfect
00:23:23
opportunity for
00:23:25
Escape 3 weeks later Brown and another
00:23:28
inmate jumped a 4ft fence and raced for
00:23:31
Freedom Donna was waiting nearby in the
00:23:34
getaway car let's go let's go by the
00:23:37
time guards discovered the inmates were
00:23:39
missing they were long gone a few days
00:23:42
after the escape police tracked Brown to
00:23:45
Paris Texas but missed him by a matter
00:23:47
of
00:23:48
minutes for 3 years Don's family had no
00:23:52
word from their mother and no idea if
00:23:55
she was alive or dead finally Sherry
00:23:59
received an unexpected phone
00:24:01
call hello hi Sher yeah hi it's me Mom
00:24:07
Mom are you okay yeah I'm okay I'm out
00:24:11
of Oklahoma but I want to come home it
00:24:14
was just kind of a quick thing and
00:24:16
that's all she told me she loved me and
00:24:18
that was it Donna said she wanted to
00:24:20
come home but she never did I'm afraid
00:24:24
that she's afraid that we don't want her
00:24:26
back I'm afraid that my Mom feels like
00:24:29
that she did something really bad and
00:24:32
that she can't face us anymore how are
00:24:35
we going to act to her and what I say to
00:24:38
her is it's
00:24:41
okay authorities never filed charges
00:24:44
against Donna Brown they believed that
00:24:47
she was a victim and was coerced there
00:24:50
is no arrest warrant either issued by
00:24:53
the state of Oklahoma or by the federal
00:24:55
government for her she's not wanted on
00:24:57
any charges and in fact we would
00:24:59
encourage her if she's no longer with
00:25:01
brown or if in fact she is with brown to
00:25:04
immediately contact the
00:25:08
authorities
00:25:10
update Michael Wayne Brown has been
00:25:13
captured one of our viewers logged onto
00:25:16
our website and noticed a striking
00:25:18
similarity between Michael and Donna
00:25:20
Brown and a couple who owned a local
00:25:23
video store they had been living under
00:25:25
the assumed names of Kenneth and Linda
00:25:28
gter once they were identified the
00:25:31
couple drove themselves back to Oklahoma
00:25:34
and turned themselves in Donna was
00:25:37
reunited with her family Michael Brown
00:25:40
was returned to prison and received an
00:25:42
additional 2 years for his Escape they
00:25:45
are still
00:25:46
[Music]
00:25:50
married next hands that heal a
00:25:53
controversial technique that defies
00:25:56
conventional medicine
00:26:02
[Music]
00:26:08
you are witnessing a controversial
00:26:09
healing technique called Therapeutic
00:26:12
Touch or TT its practitioners believe
00:26:15
that by running their hands a few inches
00:26:17
above the body they can pinpoint areas
00:26:20
of disease or injury they also claim
00:26:23
they can direct energy from their own
00:26:26
bodies to others in order to promote
00:26:29
healing does Therapeutic Touch really
00:26:32
work to find out we went to Pittsburgh
00:26:35
Pennsylvania and talked to a TT
00:26:41
practitioner one day Janet Ziggler drove
00:26:45
her three boys to the regular martial
00:26:46
arts class at just 7 years of age
00:26:50
Janet's youngest son Michael was already
00:26:52
an accomplished
00:26:56
pianist
00:26:58
Michael went in and as he was slipping
00:27:00
his shoes off he put his hand up in the
00:27:03
jam of the
00:27:05
door by that time I'd gotten out of the
00:27:08
car and Michael ran out of the school
00:27:11
and he was I don't think he realized
00:27:14
what happened he wasn't crying or
00:27:15
anything but his finger was bleeding
00:27:16
profusely and he said Mom I think I
00:27:19
pinched my finger and I looked down at
00:27:21
his finger and it was gone and I said
00:27:23
Michael where is your finger Michael
00:27:25
what's wrong I got my finger caught in
00:27:27
door okay stand very still almost
00:27:30
instinctively Janet began to treat
00:27:32
Michael with Therapeutic
00:27:34
Touch This immediately calmed him he
00:27:37
didn't shed a single tear at all through
00:27:40
the whole
00:27:42
process okay sweee let's go wash it off
00:27:45
I looked in the door jam to find the
00:27:47
finger and I found it it was actually
00:27:49
unrecognizable it was totally squashed
00:27:52
and of course the nail was gone it
00:27:53
really didn't look like a finger but it
00:27:55
was the only thing in the door jam so I
00:27:56
assumed that's what it was it was scary
00:27:58
uh I hadn't started to cry or anything
00:28:00
but uh the blood and the and seeing my
00:28:04
finger gone and wondering what's going
00:28:05
to happen it was just a fear that went
00:28:08
through me a friend rushed Janet and
00:28:10
Michael to a local emergency clinic the
00:28:13
injury was not life-threatening but
00:28:15
Michael's future as a Pianist was now in
00:28:18
question I'm sorry but this is never
00:28:20
going to take I don't think we can
00:28:22
reattach this finger well please try
00:28:24
he's a Pianist he's got to have this
00:28:25
finger need to suit your kit some saline
00:28:29
the doctor he turned to me and he said
00:28:31
what are you doing to him and I said I'm
00:28:32
doing Therapeutic Touch to keep him calm
00:28:34
the energy of the finger so he said well
00:28:37
I don't know anything about that he said
00:28:38
but whatever it is you're doing keep
00:28:41
doing it because I've never seen a child
00:28:43
so calm in such a
00:28:44
situation despite his misgivings the
00:28:47
doctor reattached the fingertip he
00:28:50
recommended that Michael see a plastic
00:28:52
surgeon as soon as possible the very
00:28:54
next day when I went to the plastic
00:28:56
surgeon he unwrapped it looked at it and
00:28:58
said I'm sorry this is not going to take
00:29:01
he's going to lose his finger and he
00:29:04
just wrapped it up again a dry dressing
00:29:06
didn't do anything at all to the
00:29:09
finger and it went like that every
00:29:12
week hello doctor is Ziggler oh Michael
00:29:16
let me see your hand for 8 weeks Janet
00:29:19
used Therapeutic Touch on Michael's
00:29:21
finger and for 8 weeks the plastic
00:29:24
surgeon warned that the reattachment
00:29:26
would probably never work look the
00:29:29
scab's gone looks great they removed the
00:29:33
bandage the scab and everything and I
00:29:35
saw like almost a brand new finger with
00:29:37
new skin and everything I was totally
00:29:40
overwhelmed as soon as the last bandage
00:29:43
came off Michael was back at the
00:29:45
keyboard less than a month later he
00:29:48
placed first in a piano
00:29:51
[Music]
00:29:56
competition the experience in my
00:29:58
accident and what my mom did for my
00:30:00
finger most definitely changed my
00:30:02
feelings about Therapeutic Touch before
00:30:05
it happened I would go to my mom get the
00:30:07
treatment from her but was a little
00:30:09
skeptical you know it looked sort of
00:30:11
funny and would joke about it after this
00:30:13
experience I was totally 100% believing
00:30:16
in her Therapeutic Touch and that it
00:30:18
definitely
00:30:20
worked but not everyone is convinced
00:30:22
that Therapeutic Touch really
00:30:25
works I think the
00:30:28
practitioners are good and honest and
00:30:31
kind
00:30:32
nurses I think their therapy is
00:30:37
baloney a nurse named Dolores creger
00:30:40
first developed Therapeutic Touch and
00:30:42
defined what makes an effective healer
00:30:45
what you were moved by originally is a
00:30:48
compassion you see a compassion to help
00:30:50
another person and it's the power of
00:30:53
compassion that brings you across that
00:30:56
bridge the good effects are primarily
00:31:00
Placebo effects that
00:31:03
means that what the patient believes
00:31:05
will happen will
00:31:08
happen are Cindy and Kate still here a
00:31:10
couple will call George and Marie
00:31:12
learned about Therapeutic Touch
00:31:14
firsthand when Marie was pregnant with
00:31:16
her first child we can't wait any longer
00:31:19
George we have to do with
00:31:24
cyan George and Marie's daughter Mari
00:31:27
was was born nearly 3 months premature
00:31:29
and weighed less than 2 lb she soon
00:31:32
developed critical problems in her lungs
00:31:36
the nurse disconnected the wiring all
00:31:38
the tubing from the
00:31:40
baby and put the baby in my wife's
00:31:44
arms and my wife held the baby and she
00:31:48
started to
00:31:49
cry and um I thought that was
00:31:54
it I I thought the baby was
00:32:00
dead in a last ditch effort to save her
00:32:03
life doctors put the tiny infant on a
00:32:06
respirator then one of the Intensive
00:32:08
Care nurses began treating Mariah with
00:32:11
Therapeutic Touch I spoke to your wife
00:32:14
Marie therapeutic I continued to take
00:32:17
care of Mariah for the rest of my shift
00:32:20
and you know contined to work on her
00:32:22
direct energy and a Therapeutic Touch
00:32:24
manner to her basically I'm a very
00:32:27
logical bottom line shoot straight from
00:32:30
the hip
00:32:31
person and for someone to talk to me
00:32:33
about alternative medicines they would
00:32:36
have to prove it to
00:32:40
[Music]
00:32:43
me her oxygen numbers the levels are
00:32:46
going up that's good right she's
00:32:48
responding well look at her I'm going to
00:32:51
accountant uh I deal in numbers and to
00:32:54
see this I can relate to it
00:32:58
every time Joanne took care of the baby
00:33:00
every time Joanne had the baby the baby
00:33:03
got
00:33:04
better Marie was in critical condition
00:33:07
also Joanne began to use Therapeutic
00:33:09
Touch with her as well Joanne did
00:33:13
basically the same thing for me as she
00:33:15
had done for Mariah and little by little
00:33:18
it
00:33:19
worked and the pain went away and Joanne
00:33:22
would not take credit for it it was
00:33:24
funny she would just Chuck It Off off
00:33:27
like it you know was just an everyday
00:33:28
thing for her it was part of her nursing
00:33:31
technique your little girl wants her pry
00:33:34
the bottom line is my baby's alive and I
00:33:39
have the doctors to think I have the
00:33:42
whole nursing staff to thank and more so
00:33:45
I have Joanne to thank cuz I believe
00:33:47
without
00:33:48
Joanne we wouldn't have this
00:33:50
[Music]
00:33:52
baby even the strongest Believers in
00:33:55
Therapeutic Touch admit that it does not
00:33:58
always work it is still considered by
00:34:00
some to be an unproven therapy but
00:34:04
perhaps in the future Medical Science
00:34:06
will unravel the mystery of this
00:34:09
intriguing
00:34:11
technique next a college freshman leaves
00:34:15
class 6 months later pieces of his body
00:34:19
wash up on the local
00:34:25
Beach
00:34:32
Bristol Rhode Island hey
00:34:35
man when 18-year-old Brian nisenfeld
00:34:38
left home to attend college he had high
00:34:41
hopes for his future he had written in
00:34:44
his high school yearbook that his dream
00:34:46
was to make a difference in the world at
00:34:49
the beginning of his second semester
00:34:51
Brian left his afternoon English class
00:34:54
as usual no one ever saw him
00:34:57
[Music]
00:35:01
again 6 months later Lori veils and her
00:35:05
daughter Chelsea took a walk on Hog
00:35:07
Island beach just a few miles from the
00:35:10
University I noticed a shoe on the sand
00:35:13
that was at the high TI line look like
00:35:16
somebody just walked out of their
00:35:18
shoe oh my goodness and I just kind of
00:35:22
poked the shoe with my stick and it
00:35:24
seemed hard like something had been
00:35:26
stuck inside the shoe I realized there
00:35:29
was like a white very shiny white almost
00:35:32
plastic looking smooth surface and
00:35:34
around it um like a fleshy substance so
00:35:38
I knew right at that point that there
00:35:41
was a foot inside the shoe DNA tests
00:35:45
determined the foot and a shin bone
00:35:47
found close by were Brian's though
00:35:50
authorities found no additional remains
00:35:52
They concluded that Brian was dead when
00:35:56
it was a announced that the bones were
00:35:58
possibly
00:35:59
Brian's it gave us some kind of uh
00:36:02
relief knowing that uh he didn't just
00:36:06
wander
00:36:09
off so what could possibly have happened
00:36:12
to Brian nisen felt and why would only a
00:36:15
foot and a shinbone wash up on a beach
00:36:18
and where was the rest of his body well
00:36:21
some say his death was an accident
00:36:23
others that it was
00:36:25
suicide however his family says that
00:36:28
Brian was
00:36:31
murdered largely based on the fact that
00:36:34
we have not uncovered any evidence
00:36:38
whatsoever of Foul Play We're inclined
00:36:41
to believe this this perhaps may have
00:36:43
been a suicide I don't think Brian would
00:36:46
commit suicide I don't think he did
00:36:48
commit suicide there's no evidence of
00:36:51
that there's never been any evidence of
00:36:53
that it's all Theory and an accident I I
00:36:56
guess it's possible but in my heart my
00:36:59
gut I don't think that was the case I
00:37:01
believe Brian was
00:37:04
murdered investigators try to
00:37:06
reconstruct Brian's brief term at
00:37:08
college from the beginning his life
00:37:11
there was a struggle Brian's academic
00:37:14
career in high school came very easily
00:37:16
for him this was much more of a
00:37:18
challenge he missed his family that he
00:37:21
was so close to and I don't think he
00:37:23
realized how much his family meant to
00:37:25
him until he had actually went away I
00:37:28
think Brian was homesick he didn't do
00:37:30
very well that fourth semester Brian he
00:37:32
uh his grades kind of plummeted
00:37:35
investigators believe Brian's
00:37:37
difficulties at school might have driven
00:37:39
him to commit suicide
00:37:46
Brian but it's possible something even
00:37:49
more Sinister may have led to his
00:37:53
disappearance dad you have to come up
00:37:55
here and get me just by the reflection
00:37:57
of his voice I knew that he was in a
00:37:59
crisis mood I knew that he was scared
00:38:01
and he said this kid is threatening me
00:38:03
he's harassing me on the phone was
00:38:05
threatening to get on campus threatening
00:38:07
to beat him up and I thought if this kid
00:38:09
can get on the campus then security has
00:38:11
to know about it
00:38:13
Brian campus security called a student
00:38:16
adviser in Brian's dormatory who then
00:38:18
checked up on him how you doing good
00:38:21
Brian said the threatening calls were
00:38:23
from a former student but he was was
00:38:26
either unwilling or unable to say what
00:38:30
motivated the caller yeah yeah you're
00:38:32
okay yeah totally I'm fine all tomorrow
00:38:35
for reasons only he knew Brian grew even
00:38:38
more troubled please let talk to you
00:38:40
Brian didn't tell anyone where he was
00:38:41
going he simply left class and did not
00:38:45
return Brian 6 days passed before anyone
00:38:49
became
00:38:52
suspicious the minute he was called by
00:38:54
the university Brian's father set out
00:38:56
for Rhode Island when I heard that that
00:39:00
my son you know that Brian was missing
00:39:02
for a week two things happened in my
00:39:04
mind one I go through a state of
00:39:06
disbelief and shock and the other thing
00:39:09
is I got to find him I got to get
00:39:11
involved I have to see what the hell
00:39:19
happened nothing's changed it's exactly
00:39:22
the way we found
00:39:25
it
00:39:30
gloves are still here it's it's it's the
00:39:32
middle of the
00:39:33
winter it looked like he stepped out to
00:39:36
get a soda or go to dinner or something
00:39:40
it looked like I should wait and he's
00:39:41
going to show up again but it was 7 days
00:39:44
it was a week since he disappeared so I
00:39:46
knew he wasn't coming back to the
00:39:49
room Brian's parents believe the former
00:39:52
student who threatened Brian over the
00:39:54
phone had something to do with his
00:39:57
disappearance investigators found out
00:39:59
the name of the former student and
00:40:01
learned that he and Brian had been close
00:40:03
friends during his first semester when
00:40:06
questioned he admitted to making the
00:40:08
threatening phone calls but said they
00:40:10
were only a joke Brian being unsure of
00:40:14
himself having some freshman Jitters
00:40:16
really seemed to gravitate toward this
00:40:19
one student I do know just from talking
00:40:22
to Brian's parents and reading some of
00:40:23
Brian's poetry that he did seem to be
00:40:26
a young man who was questioning his
00:40:28
sexuality and while I am not sure
00:40:31
whether it was an overt homosexual
00:40:33
relationship I do think that they were
00:40:35
undertones of
00:40:37
that whatever the nature of their
00:40:39
friendship it ended
00:40:41
suddenly get out Brian never said why
00:40:45
certainly one of the theories that I've
00:40:47
explored is that this former student was
00:40:50
going to expose his relationship with
00:40:52
Brian that there were certain things
00:40:54
that Brian didn't want his parents
00:40:56
parents to know didn't want his hometown
00:40:58
to know and that his homosexuality could
00:41:00
have been one of them was it possible
00:41:03
that Brian was
00:41:04
gay well I guess it's possible he would
00:41:07
not say uh what soured their
00:41:11
relationship he would not tell me
00:41:14
anything in relationship to the
00:41:16
relationship with the former student I
00:41:18
wouldn't do that the former student in
00:41:21
my opinion had something to do with
00:41:23
Brian's death he may not been actual
00:41:27
person to have done him in but I think
00:41:30
he had something to do with Bryan's
00:41:32
death we were able to uh meet uh with
00:41:35
that individual uh conduct a uh
00:41:39
comprehensive interview of him and we
00:41:41
are fully satisfied that that person had
00:41:44
absolutely no responsibility in The
00:41:47
Disappearance of Brian nisenfeld I know
00:41:50
somebody knows something they're just
00:41:52
afraid to talk and I don't know why but
00:41:55
they are afraid to talk talk they're
00:41:56
afraid to come
00:41:58
forward somebody has to know something
00:42:00
about
00:42:01
Brian if you have any information about
00:42:04
the case of Brian nisenfeld please log
