00:00:02
So the initiative for global
00:00:04
environmental leadership at Wharton uh
00:00:07
put out a report recently which is
00:00:09
called next stop innovation. What's
00:00:11
ahead for urban mobility and what is
00:00:15
interesting about this report is it
00:00:17
really hits on some really key issues
00:00:20
that are impacting urban mobility today.
00:00:23
uh everything from the infrastructure
00:00:26
the uh type of investments that are
00:00:28
being made in new technologies
00:00:30
especially especially electric vehicles
00:00:34
and on top of that there's a really
00:00:36
strong emphasis on the sharing economy I
00:00:40
think one of the key issues that come
00:00:42
out of the first section which talks
00:00:44
about the sharing economy and it focuses
00:00:48
on several different areas it talks
00:00:50
about car sharing it talks about bike
00:00:52
sharing. It talks about how uh
00:00:55
telecommuting telecommuting for work is
00:00:58
really having an impact. And I think one
00:01:01
of the key pieces that we see today is
00:01:04
that the sharing economy is an
00:01:06
overarching theme. There is it shows a
00:01:11
true disruption, a different way of
00:01:13
looking at things. We have in the past
00:01:16
really thought every person needs to
00:01:18
have their own they need to have their
00:01:20
own car. They need to have their own
00:01:23
bike. They need to have it. And they it
00:01:25
comes with baggage. And that's one of
00:01:28
the more interesting things I find is is
00:01:30
that when you're in an urban
00:01:32
environment, the less baggage you have,
00:01:34
the better. And so it is for everyone's
00:01:39
benefit that we take a car, which in the
00:01:43
1950s was our god-given right to every
00:01:46
American must have a car, and said,
00:01:48
"Look, let's change that model. Let's
00:01:50
turn it on its side and let's say
00:01:52
instead let's take that same car,
00:01:56
advertise its cost over multiple
00:01:58
drivers, figure a way for us to have
00:02:02
more energy efficient cars that are
00:02:04
available and cut down my cost as a as a
00:02:08
as a person who uses transportation. Why
00:02:11
would I want to pay insurance? Why would
00:02:13
I want to pay for parking? Why would I
00:02:16
want to have to deal with the
00:02:17
maintenance costs? It's the classic
00:02:20
win-win. And I think ultimately the the
00:02:23
model of sharing whether it be any of
00:02:26
the models, cars, bikes, etc. It is it
00:02:30
makes all the sense in the world and it
00:02:32
also starts dealing with some of the
00:02:33
major issues that cities are really
00:02:35
confronting today. I think one of the
00:02:38
major issues that every major city is
00:02:41
going to be dealing with in the coming
00:02:43
years and certainly within the next 10
00:02:45
years is that the amount of cars that
00:02:49
are currently inhabiting the streets
00:02:51
can't
00:02:53
exist. Bottom line. And Mayor Bloomberg
00:02:56
when he passed his most recent laws in
00:03:01
the new in the city of New York really
00:03:03
was recognizing that fact. And given
00:03:07
just the sheer number of people who live
00:03:10
in the city, the what I'll call builtin
00:03:13
transportation infrastructure, taxi,
00:03:16
buses, etc. The number of cars that you
00:03:20
can have in the city, there's a limit.
00:03:22
Manhattan is not getting any bigger. And
00:03:25
ultimately what needs to happen is a
00:03:28
more planned out strategy, a process
00:03:33
that starts to bring together all the
00:03:35
groups, the folks that are dealing from
00:03:37
the government side, the people who have
00:03:40
to do transportation every day, the
00:03:42
commuters as well as industry, they all
00:03:45
have a role here.
