Forensic Files - Season 6, Episode 28 - Naked Justice - Full Episode

November 24, 2021 / 22:34

This episode covers the tragic case of Leanne Fletcher's death, the investigation into her husband Mick Fletcher, and his affair with Judge Susan Shernowski.

In 1999, Leanne Fletcher was found dead in her home in Hazel Park, Michigan, with a gunshot wound to her head. Mick Fletcher claimed it was an accident while they were reloading a gun after a trip to the firing range. However, evidence suggested otherwise.

Forensic analysis revealed inconsistencies in Mick's story, including blood spatter patterns and the absence of gunpowder residue on Leanne's hands. Investigators discovered Mick's affair with Judge Susan Shernowski, leading to suspicions about his motives.

Ultimately, Mick was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. The prosecution argued that his wife's pregnancy and their troubled relationship motivated him to kill her to protect his affair.

The episode concludes with Mick's conviction and his claims of innocence, despite overwhelming evidence against him.

TL;DR

Mick Fletcher was convicted of murdering his wife Leanne to protect his affair with Judge Susan Shernowski.

00:03:30
that's sunday night the couple
00:03:32
celebrated their good fortune with
00:03:34
leanne's parents
00:03:36
mick asked his in-laws if they would
00:03:38
watch their granddaughter hannah the
00:03:39
next day
00:03:41
and he said i wonder if you'd babysit
00:03:43
for about one hour
00:03:45
and i said for one hour and he said yeah
00:03:47
he said we want to go to the firing
00:03:49
range
00:03:51
mick believed in having a gun in the
00:03:53
house for protection and he wanted
00:03:55
leanne to learn how to use
00:04:02
after visiting the firing range mick and
00:04:05
leanne decided to return home and to
00:04:07
spend some quiet time together before
00:04:09
picking up their daughter
00:04:14
just a few minutes after they arrived
00:04:16
home
00:04:17
mick made a frantic call to police

mick told police he and leanne were
00:04:47
sitting on the bed together reloading
00:04:49
the 45 caliber smith and wesson they
00:04:51
just used at the firing range
00:04:54
he had trouble loading the second clip
00:04:55
so he gave it to leanne to help him
00:04:58
he put the gun down in the gun box at
00:05:00
the foot of the bed got up went to the
00:05:02
bathroom to wash his hands and that's
00:05:04
when he heard the gun go off
00:05:08
he came running out of the bathroom and
00:05:10
saw his wife laying on the floor
00:05:12
oh my god man
00:05:14
the last thing i ever wanted in my life
00:05:17
was to bury one of my kids
00:05:20
and then to have to bury one so young
00:05:23
so young so beautiful
00:05:25
not fair
00:05:30
at first glance it appeared to be an
00:05:33
accident
00:05:34
but police decided to take a second look
00:05:38
and then
00:05:39
a third
00:05:40
[Music]
00:05:45
as part of the investigation into leanne
00:05:48
fletcher's death
00:05:49
police first needed to eliminate the
00:05:51
possibility of suicide
00:05:54
perhaps leanne's pregnancy had caused
00:05:57
some depression
00:05:59
[Music]
00:06:02
she was so excited there is no way
00:06:05
on earth that liam would ever consider
00:06:08
suicide
00:06:10
let alone go through with it not in a
00:06:12
million years
00:06:14
mick fletcher told police his wife
00:06:17
accidentally shot herself in their
00:06:19
bedroom shortly after a trip to the
00:06:21
firing range as she tried to reload
00:06:24
their pistol
00:06:27
leanne's mother suspected that an
00:06:29
accidental shooting in the head
00:06:31
was a little too convenient this was a
00:06:34
terrible accident she would have been
00:06:36
shot in her hand her arm her foot
00:06:38
in the wall i said it wouldn't be in her
00:06:40
head
00:06:43
in the couple's bedroom
00:06:45
police noticed blood stains on the
00:06:47
carpet under leanne's body as well as
00:06:50
under the gun and clip
00:06:54
and there was blood spatter on the
00:06:56
computer stand by the bed
00:06:59
there was more blood spatter on the edge
00:07:01
of the bed spread
00:07:04
the medical examiner dr lubissa dragovic
00:07:07
performed leanne's autopsy
00:07:11
there was no gunpowder residue in the
00:07:13
bullet wound
00:07:14
but there were some tiny dots of
00:07:17
gunpowder called stippling embedded in
00:07:20
the skin around the wound
00:07:23
gap other stippling is a phenomenon
00:07:25
that occurs when partly burnt or unburnt
00:07:29
gum powder particles land on the surface
00:07:31
of the skin
00:07:33
the density of this stippling pattern
00:07:35
indicated that the muzzle of the firearm
00:07:38
was 12 to 18 inches away from leanne's
00:07:41
head when the gun went off
00:07:44
and the trajectory of the bullet was
00:07:46
almost horizontal
00:07:48
an unusual path for a self-inflicted
00:07:51
gunshot wound to the head
00:07:53
in order to accomplish that your arm has
00:07:56
to be about four foot long
00:07:58
this lady had only 23 inches
00:08:01
or 23 and a half inches long right arm
00:08:06
when police searched the couple's home
00:08:08
they found a brown folder in mix office
00:08:11
containing numerous romantic greeting
00:08:14
cards
00:08:15
[Music]
00:08:16
inside
00:08:18
were pictures of susan shernowski
00:08:21
a local district court judge
00:08:24
investigators also discovered that mick
00:08:27
had earned seventeen thousand dollars in
00:08:29
legal fees from cases assigned by and
00:08:32
presided over by judge susan shernowski
00:08:36
if the two were romantically involved
00:08:39
this was a gross violation of legal
00:08:41
ethics
00:08:43
investigators seized the fletcher's home
00:08:46
computer and susan chernowski's office
00:08:50
computer for examination by a forensic
00:08:53
computer expert
00:08:54
for years and years we've always been
00:08:56
willing to look in a file cabinet for
00:08:58
some type of an incriminating document
00:09:00
well people aren't using file cabinets
00:09:02
anymore they're using computers
00:09:05
sergeant duke copied the hard drives
00:09:07
from the confiscated computers onto a
00:09:10
forensic examination computer
00:09:12
which is equipped with special software
00:09:14
that can access password protected files
00:09:18
and reconstruct documents which have
00:09:20
been deleted sergeant duke found
00:09:23
nude photographs of judge chernowski and
00:09:26
hundreds of emails between her and mick
00:09:30
they read as love letters
00:09:34
they appeared to be intimate they
00:09:36
appeared to be lovers they talked about
00:09:37
being together
00:09:39
they talked about wanting to be together
00:09:41
in the future
00:09:46
mick had been corresponding with the
00:09:48
judge for 17 months
00:09:52
police also learned
00:09:54
that before she died
00:09:56
leanne had suspected her husband was
00:09:58
having an affair and the couple
00:10:00
separated
00:10:01
[Music]
00:10:03
but three months later they reconciled
00:10:06
and moved back in together
00:10:13
police no longer believed that leanne's
00:10:16
death was an accident
00:10:18
and we're beginning to suspect that mick
00:10:21
fletcher and the judge
00:10:23
might be involved
00:10:25
[Music]
00:10:30
when investigators discovered that
00:10:32
attorney mick fletcher was having an
00:10:34
affair with a sitting judge at the time
00:10:36
of his wife's death
00:10:37
both were considered suspects
00:10:40
he had his
00:10:42
should i call her his [ __ ]
00:10:44
because that's as far as i'm concerned
00:10:45
that's what she is
00:10:48
judge susan shernowski denied she had
00:10:51
anything to do with leanne's death but
00:10:53
she was able to provide some useful
00:10:56
information
00:10:57
so i asked the judge
00:10:59
when was the last time they had sexual
00:11:00
relations and she
00:11:02
stated the night before the homicide
00:11:05
this meant that after having dinner with
00:11:08
leanne's parents
00:11:09
mick dropped his wife and daughter off
00:11:11
at home and made some excuse so that he
00:11:14
could secretly meet with his lover
00:11:17
she believed there was no sexual
00:11:19
relationship between himself and leanne
00:11:23
and she told us that if
00:11:25
there was a sexual relationship between
00:11:28
michael and leanne that their
00:11:30
relationship would be over
00:11:31
and all of a sudden now at the time of
00:11:33
her death she was three weeks four weeks
00:11:35
pregnant that we believe that that was
00:11:37
indeed the motive
00:11:39
for for her death
00:11:42
mick insisted that leanne's death was an
00:11:45
accident
00:11:48
he claimed leanne was reloading their
00:11:50
gun
00:11:51
and that he heard the gunshot when he
00:11:53
was in the bathroom
00:11:56
but the evidence
00:11:57
told a different story
00:12:00
the gun and extra clip were found on the
00:12:02
floor
00:12:03
and not in leanne's hand
00:12:06
in a lot of cases where people shoot
00:12:08
themselves the gun is still in their
00:12:10
hand because
00:12:12
of
00:12:13
anatomy that i can't explain the body
00:12:15
grabs a gun
00:12:17
there was also blood on leanne's palm
00:12:20
if the gun had been in her hand when the
00:12:23
shot was fired the gun would have
00:12:25
prevented the blood from striking the
00:12:27
palm of her hand
00:12:30
and there was blood on the carpet
00:12:32
underneath the gun and extra clip
00:12:35
well it should have been on top of those
00:12:36
items there's blood underneath the items
00:12:39
if she had to shot herself the blood
00:12:40
would have fallen on top of the gun in
00:12:42
the top of the cliff
00:12:44
and by the dresser
00:12:46
there was a shell casing standing on end
00:12:49
and everything looked like it was placed
00:12:52
we swapped leanne's hands
00:12:54
and sent it to a lab to determine
00:12:56
whether or not there was any type of
00:12:58
gunpowder residue that may have been
00:12:59
left that came back negative
00:13:03
forensic serologist and blood spatter
00:13:05
expert dave woodford examined the shirt
00:13:08
mick fletcher wore the day of the
00:13:10
shooting
00:13:13
a phenol phthalene chemical test found
00:13:16
blood on the right cuff
00:13:19
using a stereo microscope
00:13:22
woodford saw high velocity impact blood
00:13:25
spatter on the right cuff
00:13:27
a fine mist of tiny blood particles had
00:13:30
been driven deep into the fibers
00:13:34
to me it was critical because
00:13:37
it pretty much took his story
00:13:40
and
00:13:41
didn't give it any credibility at all
00:13:43
there was no way
00:13:45
that he could have been in the bathroom
00:13:46
at the time of the shooting
00:13:49
high velocity impact blood spatter is
00:13:52
created when a gunshot wound hits an
00:13:54
area with blood and the fine mist of
00:13:57
blood blows back toward the gun
00:14:00
he had to be in close proximity
00:14:03
to leanne when she was shot
00:14:08
had leanne shot herself investigators
00:14:10
say there would have been high velocity
00:14:13
impact blood spatter on her hand
00:14:16
and there was none
00:14:18
it doesn't make any difference
00:14:21
if there are additional drops of blood
00:14:23
that occur later
00:14:25
or contaminate on top of it with some
00:14:28
some smudging occurs there will still be
00:14:31
areas that allow for this pattern to be
00:14:34
recognized and that was not there
00:14:38
to find out where leanne was when she
00:14:40
was shot
00:14:42
investigators analyzed the angle of the
00:14:44
blood spatter on the computer stand next
00:14:47
to leanne's body
00:14:49
the size and shape of the blood spatter
00:14:51
told investigators that the blood hit
00:14:54
the computer stand at a 10 to 20 degree
00:14:57
angle
00:14:59
strings which were connected to each
00:15:01
drop of blood spatter revealed the exact
00:15:04
location of leanne's head when the shot
00:15:07
was fired
00:15:09
say for instance the angle you got was
00:15:10
52 degrees so then you take the string
00:15:13
from the blood droplet and you measure
00:15:15
up 52 degrees and you bring that out
00:15:16
into space somewhere and you do that
00:15:18
with each blood droplet
00:15:22
where the strings intersect is the spot
00:15:25
where the blood originated
00:15:27
woodford concluded that leanne was on
00:15:29
the floor when she was shot
00:15:32
she was not sitting on the bed while she
00:15:34
was shot
00:15:36
that she was on her hands and her knees
00:15:38
while she was shot
00:15:40
investigators also discovered fresh
00:15:43
sperm in the vaginal swab from leanne's
00:15:46
autopsy an indication that the couple
00:15:49
had sexual relations shortly before the
00:15:52
shooting it's my opinion that sexual
00:15:56
relationships occurred
00:15:59
pretty close to the time of her death
00:16:03
police repeatedly test fired the gun in
00:16:06
order to recreate the same stippling
00:16:08
patterns found on leanne's head
00:16:12
they fired at close range
00:16:14
and gradually moved back at six inch
00:16:17
intervals
00:16:22
the tests confirmed dr dragovic's
00:16:25
earlier observation
00:16:27
the gun was 12 to 18 inches away from
00:16:30
leanne's head when the shot was fired
00:16:32
too far away for leanne to have held the
00:16:35
gun herself
00:16:37
which in essence takes out
00:16:40
the possibility of this
00:16:42
this wound
00:16:44
being self-inflicted
00:16:47
leanne's family never believed mcstorey
00:16:50
that the shooting was accidental
00:16:52
judge chernowski said she was out of
00:16:55
town on the day of leanne's death which
00:16:57
checked out
00:16:58
and investigators did not believe she
00:17:01
knew about mick's plans
00:17:04
police arrested mick fletcher and
00:17:07
charged him with the premeditated murder
00:17:10
of his wife
00:17:13
[Music]
00:17:15
prosecutors believe that the murder of
00:17:18
leanne fletcher was premeditated and
00:17:20
that her husband mick killed her in
00:17:23
order to protect his romantic
00:17:24
relationship with judge susan shernowski
00:17:27
[Music]
00:17:28
judge chernowski testified that mick had
00:17:31
lied to her about his relationship with
00:17:33
leanne
00:17:35
mick told her he no longer was having
00:17:37
sexual relations with his wife
00:17:40
and so susan chernowski believed that
00:17:43
the two had a future together
00:17:46
but when leanne became pregnant mick
00:17:49
realized that the judge would discover
00:17:51
he had been lying
00:17:53
i really do think if she wouldn't have
00:17:54
gotten pregnant she'd still be alive
00:17:57
i think that panicked him when she got
00:17:59
pregnant you know
00:18:01
prosecutors believe the couple's trip to
00:18:03
the firing range was probably a setup a
00:18:06
way to explain why the pistol was out of
00:18:08
its case in the bedroom
00:18:10
they
00:18:11
had to pick up their daughter but before
00:18:14
they picked up their daughter they
00:18:15
wanted to come home and have
00:18:18
what he quoted as a quickie
00:18:21
when they returned from the firing range
00:18:23
and leanne went into the bathroom mick
00:18:26
placed the gun near the gun case at the
00:18:28
foot of their bed
00:18:42
medical evidence shows that the couple
00:18:44
had sex on the floor
00:18:49
[Music]
00:18:52
we have to go
00:18:56
as leanne was getting up mick grabbed
00:18:58
the gun and pulled the trigger
00:19:04
the mistakes mick made were numerous
00:19:09
blowback blood spatter landed on the
00:19:11
cuff of mick's shirt
00:19:17
and
00:19:18
he placed the weapon and clip on top of
00:19:20
a blood stain next to leanne's bloody
00:19:23
hand
00:19:24
which clearly showed
00:19:26
she hadn't been holding the gun
00:19:30
mick then went into the bathroom and
00:19:33
rinsed off leanne's blood
00:19:35
blood that was later found in the sink
00:19:38
trap
00:19:39
then
00:19:40
he called police
00:19:42
you have the evidence of the night
00:19:44
before where he is professing his love
00:19:46
to another woman not his wife you had
00:19:49
the blood in the trap of the sink
00:19:51
which would indicate that he washed his
00:19:53
hands prior to making a 911 call you
00:19:55
have the high velocity blood mist on the
00:19:57
cuff of his shirt you have the stippling
00:20:00
patterns that are on the right side
00:20:02
of leanne's face
00:20:04
so it's a combination of all all this
00:20:06
evidence that just just pointed towards
00:20:08
him as the person that committed this
00:20:09
crime
00:20:11
mick
00:20:12
didn't want to be with lann anymore but
00:20:14
the thought of her being with somebody
00:20:16
else
00:20:17
he just couldn't handle it
00:20:20
guilty of the lesser offense of
00:20:22
second-degree murder
00:20:24
but the jury did not believe mick
00:20:26
fletcher planned leanne's murder so he
00:20:29
was convicted of second-degree murder
00:20:33
we were grateful that it was second
00:20:35
degree but
00:20:36
it should have been first degree it
00:20:38
should have i mean it was clearly
00:20:40
clearly premeditated and anybody that
00:20:42
knew him
00:20:43
knew that
00:20:44
the trial judge sentenced fletcher to
00:20:46
the maximum penalty allowed
00:20:49
life in prison
00:20:52
in this exclusive phone interview from
00:20:54
prison
00:20:55
mick fletcher tells the producers of
00:20:57
this program that he is not a murderer
00:21:01
i didn't kill my wife
00:21:04
am i an innocent man i had an affair
00:21:07
i did something that i shouldn't have
00:21:08
done i did something that was immoral
00:21:11
all i can tell you is that i didn't kill
00:21:12
my wife
00:21:14
unfortunately for him all the evidence
00:21:16
points the other direction and points to
00:21:18
the fact that indeed he did commit this
00:21:20
murder and he did commit this crime
00:21:22
it's hard when you have two people in
00:21:23
the house and only one left to tell the
00:21:26
story
00:21:27
and so you have to have the forensic
00:21:29
evidence and that basically will tell
00:21:30
the story for you
00:21:33
and i'm so glad
00:21:36
you have to look at the scene and what
00:21:37
does the scene tell you forensically and
00:21:40
that's exactly what happened in this
00:21:41
case
00:21:42
that the story by the defendant then oh
00:21:44
my god my wife accidentally shot herself
00:21:49
was seen through i hope they find him in
00:21:51
the same humiliating way that he left my
00:21:53
daughter half naked
00:21:56
in the prison somewhere dead
00:21:58
and i hope he rots in him
00:22:01
[Music]
00:22:12

00:22:15

00:22:17
