Forensic Files - Season 10, Episode 3 - Plastic Puzzle - Full Episode

January 14, 2022 / 21:42

This episode covers the hit-and-run case of Kirk Hudson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, featuring police officer Todd Christensen and the investigation that followed.

On a cold February night in 1995, police officer Todd Christensen responded to a report of a man badly injured in a hit-and-run accident. The victim, 33-year-old Kirk Hudson, was found with severe head trauma and later died at the hospital.

Investigators discovered evidence at the scene, including vehicle parts and a damaged bicycle. They determined that Hudson had been struck from behind while riding his bike and began searching for the vehicle responsible.

Through meticulous analysis of paint chips and plastic fragments, police identified the vehicle as a maroon Dodge Ram conversion van. The investigation led them to suspect Jim Northey, who had been drinking at a bar before the incident.

Despite Northey's denial of involvement, forensic evidence linked his van to the crime scene. After a trial, he was found guilty and sentenced to four years in prison, providing some closure for Hudson's grieving family.

TL;DR

Kirk Hudson's hit-and-run case reveals how forensic evidence led to Jim Northey's conviction in a tragic accident.

but he took something with him something
00:00:10
very important
00:00:12
and he left behind a piece of forensic
00:00:14
evidence that microscopically told a

todd christensen a kalamazoo michigan

policeman was on duty in his patrol car
00:01:01
things had been quiet
00:01:03
and christensen thought it was going to
00:01:05
remain so
00:01:07
i was actually eating dinner in my car
00:01:09
relaxing with a peanut butter and jelly

00:01:12
when a frantic citizen came up and
00:01:15
pulled up next to me

his breathing was
00:01:34

00:01:50
laying there
00:01:51
and his
00:01:52
injuries he just didn't hardly look like
00:01:55
the same person
00:01:57
so it was real hard and my mom was of
00:02:00
course real upset that was her only son
00:02:02
so it was very upsetting
00:02:06
hudson never regained consciousness
00:02:09
he was pronounced dead before police
00:02:11
could find out what had happened
00:02:14
when my brother passed away it affected
00:02:16
our whole family
00:02:17
my mom suffered two nervous breakdowns
00:02:20
it affected all of us
00:02:23
kirk's death was the final act in a
00:02:26
series of tragedies
00:02:27
he was an unemployed navy veteran whose
00:02:30
28 year old wife died of cancer just a
00:02:33
few years earlier
00:02:34
[Music]
00:02:35
at the time of his death he had been
00:02:38
caring for his mother she was sick and
00:02:40
elderly
00:02:43
at the accident scene
00:02:45
police found a damaged bicycle near
00:02:48
kirk's body what we saw is definitely
00:02:51
evidence of a crime
00:02:53
the vehicle parts the mangled up bicycle
00:02:56
the person lying in a pool of blood
00:02:58
would lead any reasonable officer to
00:03:00
believe that this guy got hit by a
00:03:02
vehicle and then that vehicle then left
00:03:06
kirk's family told police he often rode
00:03:08
his bicycle at night
00:03:10
i think maybe that was how maybe he did
00:03:12
relieve his stress it didn't phase him
00:03:14
really what time it was he was a night
00:03:16
person
00:03:18
so that was his thing you know he'd ride
00:03:20
his bike at night or wherever he wanted
00:03:21
to do
00:03:23
near kirk's bicycle
00:03:25
police found a trail of plastic and
00:03:27
glass fragments a small convex mirror
00:03:31
some paint chips
00:03:32
and an antenna
00:03:34
the first thing that ran through my mind
00:03:36
was
00:03:37
the driver of this vehicle was obviously
00:03:39
drunk
00:03:40
someone left the bar
00:03:42
ran this guy over
00:03:44
either knew it or didn't know it
00:03:45
regardless
00:03:46
and laughed
00:03:48
because they were drunk didn't want to
00:03:49
get caught by the police
00:03:51
this trail of vehicle parts led north
00:03:54
along the street indicating the
00:03:56
direction of the driver
00:03:58
from kirk's head injuries police
00:04:01
determined that he was riding the bike
00:04:03
with the traffic on the right side of
00:04:05
the road when he was hit from behind
00:04:09
this meant that the hit-and-run vehicle
00:04:12
would have had right front end damage
00:04:15
there was no evidence the driver used
00:04:17
his brakes before or after he struck
00:04:20
kirk
00:04:22
[Applause]
00:04:25
and kirk's family couldn't understand
00:04:28
why someone would leave him to die in
00:04:30
the street
00:04:32
this was just
00:04:33
an accident he didn't mean to do it or
00:04:35
she didn't mean to do it we just wanted
00:04:37
them you know to say to us
00:04:45
that they were sorry for what they had
00:04:46
did
00:04:47
[Music]
00:04:48
and that they didn't mean to do it
00:04:52
so
00:04:53
that's all we wanted
00:04:55
[Music]
00:04:59
there were no eyewitnesses to kirk
00:05:01
hudson's hit and run death
00:05:06
but the force of impact left little
00:05:09
doubt that the driver who hit him knew
00:05:11
what happened
00:05:13
how could they just hit him and then
00:05:14
just leave him there
00:05:16
to me that was just
00:05:18
i couldn't even believe it i was like
00:05:20
you know
00:05:22
why couldn't they have just stopped
00:05:24
the only clues to the driver's identity
00:05:28
were some pieces of truck or car parts
00:05:30
left at the scene
00:05:32
we knew that the evidence on top of the
00:05:34
ice was fresh because if it wasn't fresh
00:05:36
it had been frozen in the ice
00:05:38
so all the pieces of light lens the
00:05:40
antenna
00:05:41
reflector lens any parts of the bicycle
00:05:44
the fresh paint all sitting on top we
00:05:46
knew was fresh
00:05:49
crime scene technicians identified the
00:05:51
location of each piece with a numbered
00:05:54
marker and then drew a detailed diagram
00:05:57
of the scene
00:05:59
every piece there were 28 in all was
00:06:02
then photographed
00:06:05
but it was doubtful whether these tiny
00:06:07
clues would be enough to identify the
00:06:10
vehicle
00:06:11
after i collected things from the scene
00:06:13
i thought that we'd done the best job we
00:06:15
could
00:06:16
but i gave it about a 30 chance of ever
00:06:18
finding the vehicle that was involved i
00:06:20
didn't think that
00:06:22
we stood a real good chance
00:06:23
[Music]
00:06:25
among the pieces of the vehicle
00:06:27
were also paint chips one of the chips
00:06:30
was a little bigger than a quarter and
00:06:33
contained a wealth of information
00:06:37
there were two distinct colors on the
00:06:39
chip with a line running through them
00:06:42
it was a tri-colored piece of paint chip
00:06:44
it's a maroon color a black pinstripe
00:06:47
and moth
00:06:49
that was very unique that's a two-tone
00:06:51
vehicle with a pinstripe
00:06:54
a background check revealed there were
00:06:57
very few vehicles sold with that color
00:06:59
combination which raised the possibility
00:07:02
that it was a custom paint job
00:07:05
that helped narrow the scope of what we
00:07:08
were looking for even more
00:07:11
next investigators turned to the shards
00:07:13
of orange plastic recovered from the
00:07:16
scene
00:07:18
under the microscope
00:07:20
they found a combination of small cubes
00:07:23
and rectangles designed to reflect and
00:07:27
shine light
00:07:29
this meant it was most likely from a
00:07:31
turn signal or parking light
00:07:35
investigators then took each shard and
00:07:38
attempted to piece together what they
00:07:40
had
00:07:41
you literally may have one piece that's
00:07:43
broke here and another piece that fits
00:07:45
into it
00:07:46
or you get jagged pieces and they all
00:07:48
come together
00:07:49
microscopically
00:07:51
and that's what you look for
00:07:53
on one shard
00:07:54
investigators found a pentagon with a
00:07:57
star inside
00:08:00
it looked like a chrysler dodge logo
00:08:04
on this shard
00:08:05
there appeared to be
00:08:07
a serial number
00:08:09
the one part had some markings on it
00:08:12
some numbers on it and i was in hopes
00:08:13
that it would be
00:08:16
part numbers that we could identify what
00:08:18
type of vehicle this lens is coming from
00:08:20
had came from
00:08:22
so investigators gathered all the pieces
00:08:25
from the crime scene and went to a local
00:08:27
chrysler dodge dealership
00:08:30
and there
00:08:31
parts manager david johnson found
00:08:34
himself doing something well outside his
00:08:36
job description
00:08:38
i'd read about it in the paper about the
00:08:40
person getting hit in downtown kalamazoo
00:08:42
and they thought it might be a van of
00:08:44
some kind that had done it and when the
00:08:46
officer came in and questioned us it's
00:08:48
like wow i wonder if it was a dodge
00:08:51
johnson confirmed these pieces were from
00:08:54
the plastic casing of a turn signal
00:08:59
he then took the serial number and went
00:09:01
through old parts manuals and discovered
00:09:05
another piece of the puzzle there was no
00:09:08
doubt in my mind what this came off of
00:09:10
it had to be off of a dodge van once we
00:09:12
saw the paint chip and the antenna on it
00:09:14
i knew it had to be a conversion van
00:09:17
because those were not standard items
00:09:20
a conversion van is customized to the
00:09:23
owner's specifications
00:09:25
johnson said the parts from the turn
00:09:27
signal indicated the vehicle was a dodge
00:09:30
ram
00:09:31
a van made between 1986 and 1993.
00:09:34
[Music]
00:09:36
a closer look at the small mirror found
00:09:38
at the scene
00:09:40
narrowed this down even further
00:09:43
this was a customized part and was only
00:09:46
available from 1986 to 1987
00:09:51
police now knew the make and model of
00:09:53
the vehicle that killed kirk hudson
00:09:56
within a two-year range
00:09:58
we were in a real big hurry to try to
00:10:00
find the vehicle time is
00:10:02
is pretty critical you know you don't
00:10:03
want that vehicle
00:10:06
sitting out there for a long period of
00:10:08
time
00:10:10
incredibly
00:10:11
in kalamazoo alone
00:10:13
there were hundreds of vehicles fitting
00:10:15
that description
00:10:17
nationwide
00:10:18
tens of thousands
00:10:21
and the driver
00:10:22
and his van
00:10:24
could be anywhere
00:10:29
[Music]
00:10:31
after examining pieces of the vehicle
00:10:33
that killed kirk hudson
00:10:35
police knew they were looking for a 1986
00:10:38
or 87 move and maroon dodge ram a
00:10:41
conversion van with a black pinstripe
00:10:46
police had a list of the hundreds of
00:10:47
people whose vans fit the description
00:10:51
it's
00:10:52
like looking for a needle in a haystack
00:10:53
it's not an easy thing to do
00:10:56
kirk hudson's family was informed but
00:11:00
warned not to get their hopes up
00:11:02
my brother did have a family and they
00:11:04
didn't care you know he was a person and
00:11:07
it was important for us to
00:11:09
follow through on this and make sure
00:11:10
that justice was served
00:11:12
a description of the van was released to
00:11:14
the media
00:11:16
some calls came in but they were all
00:11:18
dead ends
00:11:21
then about a month after kirk hudson's
00:11:23
death
00:11:24
a customer in a local bar started to ask
00:11:27
some questions
00:11:30
i was had my normalcy and the bartender
00:11:34
said something about an accident where a
00:11:37
guy on a bicycle had been killed i said
00:11:40
really
00:11:40
when the woman who asked that she remain
00:11:44
anonymous wanted to know more about the
00:11:47
accident
00:11:48
when she heard the accident took place
00:11:50
just a few blocks from the bar
00:11:53
and read the description of the hit and
00:11:55
run vehicle
00:11:56
she suspected
00:11:58
she knew the identity of the driver
00:12:01
he had the only dodge van in that
00:12:03
neighborhood that color
00:12:05
i don't even remember what year his
00:12:07
dodge van was how
00:12:09
old it was and who it was
00:12:12
whatever i just know that that vanna had
00:12:15
to be his van
00:12:18
she called police to voice her suspicion
00:12:20
that the driver of the van
00:12:22
was jim northy
00:12:25
and she said she was with northey on the
00:12:28
night of the accident the two had been
00:12:29
drinking together
00:12:31
i couldn't even possibly come close to
00:12:35
saying how many he had
00:12:37
i wasn't keeping track
00:12:41
she said northie left the bar alone in
00:12:43
his van shortly before the accident
00:12:46
occurred
00:12:47
northey was 46 years old and had seven
00:12:50
previous convictions for drunk driving
00:12:54
vehicle records confirmed he owned a
00:12:57
1987 dodge ram conversion van
00:13:00
the same color as the one in the
00:13:03
accident
00:13:04
but when police discovered
00:13:06
where north he worked
00:13:08
they started to doubt whether they'd
00:13:10
ever solved the case
00:13:12
worked at this local
00:13:15
recycling place where they
00:13:16
shred vehicles
00:13:19
we were afraid that the vehicle got
00:13:20
shredded
00:13:21
and it's in a
00:13:23
thousand pieces out there in the
00:13:24
junkyard someplace
00:13:25
[Music]
00:13:26
police rushed to northey's home and
00:13:29
found the windows of his garage tape
00:13:31
closed with towels and plastic bags
00:13:35
nobody could see inside
00:13:37
which is unusual for a garage which just
00:13:40
got up my interest even more
00:13:42
when questioned jim northey denied he
00:13:45
was involved in a hit-and-run accident
00:13:47
but he acknowledged that his wife had
00:13:50
driven the van and gotten into a minor
00:13:52
traffic accident a few weeks earlier i
00:13:55
could see that the van had been involved
00:13:58
in an accident the front light
00:14:00
right light assembly had been
00:14:02
replaced it was just hanging there from
00:14:04
the wire
00:14:05
but police weren't sure how they could
00:14:08
tell whether the damage was caused by
00:14:10
the hit-and-run accident or the other
00:14:13
traffic accident northey referred to
00:14:17
then almost by chance
00:14:20
police discovered an important clue
00:14:22
when i got to a workbench it was covered
00:14:24
with several things tools work stuff
00:14:27
that type of thing and i proceeded to
00:14:30
take
00:14:30
everything off from this workbench just
00:14:32
piece by piece and as i got to the
00:14:34
bottom
00:14:35
i found one piece of orange lens
00:14:38
light lens just like the ones we'd found
00:14:40
out at the scene
00:14:41
but it wasn't enough just to find a
00:14:43
similar piece of plastic the most
00:14:46
important thing was
00:14:48
did it match
00:14:52
[Music]
00:14:54
although jim northey denied hitting kirk
00:14:57
hudson with his van
00:14:59
police confiscated the vehicle and ran
00:15:01
it through a series of tests
00:15:04
the first thing we did is we we
00:15:05
processed the van with luminol we looked
00:15:08
for trace blood
00:15:10
we next process the the van to see if
00:15:12
there was any hairs or fibers that came
00:15:14
from the victim
00:15:16
but more than a month had passed since
00:15:18
kirk hudson's death and there was no
00:15:21
biological link between northeast van
00:15:23
and the crime scene so police turned to
00:15:27
more durable evidence the plastic and
00:15:30
paint from the suspect vehicle
00:15:33
a comparison analysis was done on a
00:15:36
paint sample from northeast van
00:15:38
and paint chips from the crime scene
00:15:42
the colors and chemical composition of
00:15:44
both samples
00:15:46
were identical
00:15:48
the state police crime lab did match up
00:15:51
paint from the
00:15:53
the vehicle
00:15:54
and paint from the scene
00:15:57
next
00:15:58
investigators turned to the tiny chip of
00:16:01
plastic they'd found on northie's
00:16:03
workbench
00:16:05
as if they were putting together a
00:16:07
jigsaw puzzle
00:16:08
they tried to fit this chip into the
00:16:11
turn signal partially reassembled from
00:16:13
the crime scene
00:16:16
incredibly
00:16:17
the piece
00:16:19
fit
00:16:20
when an amber lens breaks
00:16:23
the pieces don't ever break the same way
00:16:25
again so basically
00:16:28
we had a fingerprint found at the scene
00:16:30
there was no doubt
00:16:32
this tiny shard of plastic told an
00:16:35
important story
00:16:38
it was proof that jim northie had
00:16:41
removed the broken turn signal lens
00:16:44
placed it temporarily on his workbench
00:16:47
and when he went to throw the broken
00:16:48
item away inadvertently left behind this
00:16:52
one tiny piece that matched the broken
00:16:56
pieces at the crime scene
00:16:59
investigators now turned to kirk
00:17:01
hudson's bike
00:17:03
they placed it next to the suspect van
00:17:06
in an attempt to gauge the point of
00:17:08
contact
00:17:10
there was a dent in the bicycle that
00:17:11
would have been similar from where the
00:17:12
van hit it same height the same location
00:17:15
passenger side just all kinds of jigsaw
00:17:18
puzzle pieces fitting together like a
00:17:20
glove
00:17:21
i saw the damage to the bicycle matching
00:17:24
up to the van
00:17:25
the parking light blends at the same
00:17:27
height as the seat
00:17:29
the color scheme of the van as to what
00:17:31
we picked up out there
00:17:33
the antenna
00:17:36
i got that warm fuzzy feeling that
00:17:39
we've done our job we got the vehicle
00:17:41
involved
00:17:43
based on the forensic evidence jim
00:17:46
northie was charged with leaving the
00:17:49
scene of a fatal accident
00:17:51
it was good to have the person's name
00:17:54
that was important not that we knew him
00:17:56
but just who it was
00:17:58
that maybe you know we could get some
00:18:00
closure
00:18:02
northie was offered a chance to plead to
00:18:04
a lesser charge in exchange for a
00:18:07
reduced sentence
00:18:09
but he refused
00:18:11
the defense team was convinced the tiny
00:18:14
bits of plastic and paint assembled by
00:18:16
forensic technicians weren't enough to
00:18:19
convince a jury
00:18:21
but they faced a major hurdle
00:18:23
since no one had seen northie driving
00:18:27
all they had was the physical evidence
00:18:29
to put his van
00:18:31
at the crime scene
00:18:33
there were no eyewitnesses and when
00:18:35
there are no eyewitnesses
00:18:37
it's
00:18:38
that remains a difficult part to sort
00:18:41
out in your mind until you hear all the
00:18:43
evidence the pieces of amber parking
00:18:46
light lens that you
00:18:48
took from the scene during the trial
00:18:51
prosecutors spent hours telling the jury
00:18:53
how each and every piece of plastic and
00:18:56
paint fit together
00:18:58
when completed
00:19:00
it told the story of how kirk hudson had
00:19:03
been hit
00:19:04
and left to die
00:19:06
scientific evidence is always compelling
00:19:08
juries love scientific evidence they
00:19:10
watch csi they watch your show
00:19:13
this is the rare type of case where we
00:19:15
actually have a lot of scientific
00:19:17
evidence
00:19:18
it had to be more than coincidence that
00:19:20
a piece of plastic or a paint chip or a
00:19:22
piece of glass doesn't just happen
00:19:25
to be there
00:19:26
and when they
00:19:28
showed them
00:19:30
blew them up magnified them it was easy
00:19:32
to see how they exactly matched
00:19:35
and that was very convincing as a juror
00:19:38
all of these little markers here that i
00:19:40
refer to are pieces of evidence
00:19:43
after a three-day trial
00:19:45
and only four hours of deliberation the
00:19:47
jury found jim northey
00:19:50
guilty
00:19:51
the jury put him behind that wheel
00:19:53
beyond a reasonable doubt that pretty
00:19:54
much is the end of the story
00:19:56
he was sentenced to four years in prison
00:20:00
kirk hudson's family still grieves
00:20:04
but they're grateful the killer
00:20:05
unknowingly left behind the information
00:20:09
that led to his capture
00:20:12
i know that all those little pieces came
00:20:14
to be one piece that really you know
00:20:16
helped solve the case
00:20:18
maybe if this had happened 20 years ago
00:20:21
it might not have gotten solved
00:20:23
but it took all those little pieces to
00:20:24
come together to get it solved so
00:20:27
we're very grateful for that
00:20:29
evidence
00:20:31
is great for any criminal proceeding
00:20:34
it's
00:20:35
you know i can sit here and say you ran
00:20:37
a stop sign and you say no i didn't but
00:20:39
if i say i got your fingerprint or i got
00:20:41
your parking light
00:20:43
you can't argue it it's evidence another
00:20:46
moral of this story is
00:20:48
dogged police work and investigation
00:20:51
patience
00:20:53
determination
00:20:54
can bring people to justice that
00:20:55
otherwise might have avoided it
