Forensic Files - Season 12, Episode 29 - Guarded Secrets - Full Episode

January 28, 2022 / 21:45

This episode covers the mysterious disappearance of Brian Roof, the investigation into his murder, and the eventual arrest of Dale Bradley.

Brian Roof vanished from the Kennecott Copper Mine in Utah in 1991. His wife Jennifer Roof reported him missing after he failed to return from his security shift. Investigators found no signs of foul play at the scene, leading to a lengthy investigation.

As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Brian was having an affair with Christy Bradley, the wife of his co-worker Dale Bradley. This affair provided a potential motive for Dale, who was later suspected in Brian's murder.

After years of searching, human remains were discovered, confirming Brian's death. Evidence, including a paint chip found on Brian's boot, eventually linked Dale to the crime, leading to his arrest.

Dale Bradley was charged with second-degree manslaughter and kidnapping, receiving a 40-year prison sentence. The episode highlights the importance of forensic evidence in solving cold cases.

TL;DR

Brian Roof's disappearance led to a murder investigation, revealing an affair and resulting in Dale Bradley's arrest after 14 years.

00:00:04
up next a married man falls victim to
00:00:07
temptation he had made a mistake which
00:00:10
i'm sure a lot of people can identify
00:00:12
with she offered him a wild side that he
00:00:15
hadn't experienced then he vanishes
00:00:17
without a trace he was there one minute
00:00:20
and then gone to next for almost 20
00:00:22
years the disappearance goes unsolved i
00:00:26
kept that hope that maybe he would show
00:00:28
up on my doorstep until a tiny chip of
00:00:30
paint tells of a terrifying ordeal it
00:00:33
would drive me crazy to know what a
00:00:35
murder victim goes through every time
00:00:37
they're killed

00:00:46
the kennecott copper mine outside salt
00:00:48
lake city utah is known as the richest
00:00:52
hole on earth
00:00:53
and copper
00:00:54
isn't the only valuable mineral they
00:00:57
mine gold and silver and they have very
00:01:00
expensive equipment that sort of thing
00:01:02
that
00:01:04
theft is a big problem out there
00:01:06
as a result
00:01:08
security is very tight you just don't go
00:01:10
onto kennecott copper property without
00:01:12
usually encountering security
00:01:17
so when the security guard wasn't on
00:01:19
duty in the guard shack on a winter
00:01:21
night in 1991
00:01:23
it was unusual
00:01:25
they went up and figured that he might
00:01:27
be in the restroom checked it out for a
00:01:28
while they went up and found his lunch
00:01:30
was partly eaten his hard hat was still
00:01:32
there
00:01:33
the guard brian roof was not supposed to
00:01:36
leave the shack for any reason until the
00:01:38
shift changed at 11 o'clock it was just
00:01:41
a strange incident where he was there
00:01:44
one minute and then gone the next and
00:01:46
and there was no real
00:01:48
explanation of why he was gone
00:01:51
snow had fallen just a few hours earlier
00:01:54
but there were no footprints around the
00:01:56
shack
00:01:58
brian's car was parked in a nearby lot
00:02:00
and there were no footprints anywhere
00:02:02
near his car it looked like he might
00:02:04
have just stepped outside the door and
00:02:07
and vanished but it was in a very
00:02:09
isolated area
00:02:10
inside the shack everything was in order
00:02:14
no sign of any foul play at all no blood
00:02:16
nothing turned over or destroyed
00:02:20
21 year old brian roof and his wife
00:02:22
jennifer had been married for two and a
00:02:24
half years and had a 15 month old baby
00:02:27
work record showed this wasn't the first
00:02:29
time brian went missing
00:02:33
just a few weeks earlier brian walked
00:02:35
off his job and ran away to las vegas
00:02:39
he felt a big burden to provide for us
00:02:42
especially with a second baby coming he
00:02:44
felt that burden and he was trying to
00:02:46
get through school and i know that
00:02:48
finances worried him a lot he felt bad
00:02:50
that we had to move in with my parents
00:02:53
at the time
00:02:54
brian spent six days in las vegas
00:02:58
when he returned
00:02:59
he was a changed man
00:03:01
and not for the better he was very cold
00:03:05
and distant a sight of him i'd never
00:03:07
seen before
00:03:08
he was
00:03:10
very cold bitter
00:03:12
about
00:03:13
certain things finances things like that
00:03:15
and just
00:03:17
just angry
00:03:19
as investigators searched the guard
00:03:21
shack for clues
00:03:23
the phone rang
00:03:25
the caller said she was brian's wife
00:03:28
jennifer she was surprised when somebody
00:03:31
else answered the phone
00:03:32
when brian didn't answer they told her
00:03:35
at that time that they were the police
00:03:36
and they were looking for brian
00:03:39
she did tell them that she'd been
00:03:40
talking to him around 6 30.
00:03:43
he had told her that
00:03:45
there's a another employee coming that's
00:03:48
how he turned it and he just had to go
00:03:52
as soon as police got off the phone with
00:03:54
jennifer the phone rang again the deputy
00:03:57
again answered the phone call
00:03:59
knew it was a different female voice and
00:04:02
the caller told the deputy that her name
00:04:05
was jennifer roof somebody was claiming
00:04:08
that
00:04:09
they were brian's wife that really
00:04:11
wasn't
00:04:12
a missing man with two wives
00:04:17
police knew right away
00:04:19
it was going to be an unusual
00:04:21
investigation
00:04:22
[Music]
00:04:27
shortly after brian roof's disappearance
00:04:29
from his security job two women called
00:04:32
his work phone asking to speak to him
00:04:34
each of them identified herself as his
00:04:38
wife
00:04:39
the company's caller id system revealed
00:04:42
one of the callers was indeed brian's
00:04:45
wife jennifer
00:04:46
the other was 20 year old christy
00:04:49
bradley she was married to dale bradley
00:04:52
was also a security guard at the
00:04:53
kennecott mine and one of brian roof's
00:04:56
co-workers
00:04:57
so that's when they sent detectives over
00:05:00
to dale and christy's house to find out
00:05:02
what was going on christy told police
00:05:05
that she and brian had become
00:05:07
good friends and talked regularly on the
00:05:10
phone
00:05:14
dale would have christy bring dinner out
00:05:17
to him and that's how brian and christy
00:05:19
met is actually out at the job site when
00:05:22
she would bring meals out to him
00:05:24
when questioned about brian's
00:05:26
disappearance christy said she was home
00:05:28
all day
00:05:30
and hadn't seen him
00:05:31
dale said he had been off from work and
00:05:33
was running errands all day
00:05:36
dale bradley said he was up at the
00:05:38
university of utah when his car broke
00:05:40
down he called his friend bill easton
00:05:44
who was down at a local bar here
00:05:47
five days after brian disappeared
00:05:49
his wife jennifer discovered a potential
00:05:52
clue
00:05:53
there were credit card bills that i had
00:05:55
never seen before we had not applied for
00:05:58
them together
00:05:59
and also a phone bill
00:06:02
jennifer discovered that brian was
00:06:04
having an affair with christy bradley
00:06:07
it was a double whammy to have him
00:06:09
missing and then to be hit with such
00:06:13
horrifying news that everything had been
00:06:15
shattered my whole life had been
00:06:17
shattered everything that i had dreamed
00:06:19
and hoped for
00:06:20
was gone
00:06:23
jennifer also discovered that christy
00:06:25
was with brian in las vegas a few weeks
00:06:28
earlier
00:06:29
when confronted with this information
00:06:32
christie admitted the affair to both the
00:06:34
police and her husband
00:06:37
she told me that she thought brian was
00:06:39
really nice she thought he was cute dale
00:06:42
was very controlling to her and christy
00:06:44
didn't like to be tied down christy and
00:06:46
and brian were able to talk to each
00:06:48
other and that's i think the reason for
00:06:51
the phone calls to the guard check
00:06:53
between christy and brian
00:06:55
but dale insisted he knew nothing about
00:06:57
his wife's affair when brian disappeared
00:07:01
dale had no criminal history but the
00:07:03
affair gave him a motive to harm brian
00:07:06
so investigators got a search warrant
00:07:08
for his car
00:07:09
it was checked for blood and gunshot
00:07:12
residue
00:07:13
none of which we found we didn't find
00:07:15
anything
00:07:16
in addition dale and christy bradley
00:07:18
agreed to take polygraph tests
00:07:21
and they both passed
00:07:23
when they found out about the affair i
00:07:25
had heard
00:07:26
they interviewed dale and christy and
00:07:29
dale passed a polygraph
00:07:32
and at that point they kind of dropped
00:07:34
his name from from the list of suspects
00:07:39
meanwhile investigators pursued another
00:07:42
potential lead two of ryan's fellow
00:07:45
security guards had been arrested for
00:07:47
stealing from the mine they were
00:07:50
arrested for stealing
00:07:52
medals off of kennecott property and
00:07:55
pawning them in
00:07:57
junk metal shops or you know for junk
00:08:00
metal
00:08:01
in fact one of those guards was at the
00:08:04
guard shack just minutes after brian was
00:08:06
reported missing
00:08:08
brian was one of those at the guard
00:08:10
shack who reported some of these thefts
00:08:11
going on
00:08:12
but without brian roof's body police had
00:08:16
no proof he was dead
00:08:18
officially he was still a missing person
00:08:22
[Music]
00:08:26
shortly after brian roof disappeared
00:08:28
police uncovered a theft ring run by
00:08:30
security guards at the kennecott mine
00:08:33
they were stealing anything that wasn't
00:08:35
nailed down they were stealing gloves
00:08:37
shovels you know just any kind of
00:08:39
equipment that you would find around a
00:08:41
mine
00:08:42
police wondered if brian might have
00:08:45
stumbled on a robbery in progress
00:08:47
so a theory came up that maybe these
00:08:49
guys were stealing medals off of the
00:08:51
property that night brian had stopped
00:08:53
them and they'd killed him to cover up
00:08:56
the theft
00:08:57
but none of the other security guards
00:09:00
could be linked to brian's disappearance
00:09:03
he basically was completely alone up
00:09:05
there in the mountain and it really
00:09:07
concerned him that it was an unsafe area
00:09:09
that there were no cameras no
00:09:11
electric gates no security systems like
00:09:14
they had in the other gates
00:09:16
weeks and then months passed
00:09:19
with absolutely no sign of brian roof
00:09:23
it was an overwhelming fear
00:09:25
when i would be driving to work or
00:09:27
driving to the store it was just a
00:09:29
constant
00:09:31
cloud over me of fear that somebody
00:09:33
could just disappear and never come back
00:09:36
[Music]
00:09:38
brian's wife jennifer was forced to
00:09:40
raise their little girl alone
00:09:43
six months after brian went missing she
00:09:45
gave birth to another daughter i just
00:09:48
couldn't move on i was stuck in that
00:09:50
realm of of grief until i knew what had
00:09:54
happened to him
00:09:59
one year later
00:10:01
hikers discovered human remains
00:10:04
in a camping area about 50 miles from
00:10:07
the kennecott mine well first i just
00:10:09
thought it was rock and then i thought
00:10:10
it was a dead guy
00:10:12
he still had his security outfit on as
00:10:15
you say his wallet everything intact
00:10:18
that's him
00:10:20
brian patrick
00:10:22
i got a phone call from the detectives
00:10:25
and i asked him i said is it brian and
00:10:27
he said yeah it's brian and
00:10:30
that's when my world fell apart
00:10:34
dental records confirmed the victim was
00:10:37
brian roof
00:10:44
an autopsy showed he'd been shot five
00:10:46
times in the back
00:10:49
i thought that somehow he had gotten in
00:10:52
the middle of something
00:10:53
illegal and
00:10:55
they killed him for that
00:10:58
search teams found five spent shells
00:11:00
from a 22-caliber pistol near the body
00:11:04
investigators believe brian was shot
00:11:07
just a few feet from where he was buried
00:11:10
in a shallow grave
00:11:13
the next day
00:11:14
they're out there working again
00:11:16
and one of the dogs from the canine unit
00:11:18
recovers a boot a black cowboy boot that
00:11:21
was identified as brian's work boot
00:11:25
that was recovered about 200 feet east
00:11:28
of the gravesite
00:11:30
i never did find a second boot
00:11:33
but so much time had passed and so much
00:11:35
rain and snow had fallen that no other
00:11:38
clues were found at the scene
00:11:40
it's really frustrating there's no other
00:11:42
way to put it
00:11:44
with no evidence to tie anyone to the
00:11:46
crime the case went cold
00:11:49
and the years passed
00:11:52
until 14 years later
00:11:55
when todd park a cold case detective
00:11:58
with the salt lake county sheriff's
00:12:00
office received a telephone call from
00:12:03
authorities in neighboring carbon county
00:12:07
when that call came in it gave me a i
00:12:10
guess a fresh
00:12:11
breath of air to look at another case
00:12:14
and to to really dig into it
00:12:17
police in carbon county were
00:12:19
investigating dale bradley on the
00:12:21
suspicion of murdering his second wife
00:12:24
crystal
00:12:25
dale had been a suspect in brian roof's
00:12:27
murder 14 years earlier
00:12:30
on a hunch todd park contacted dale's
00:12:33
first wife christy who is now living in
00:12:36
texas so when detective park contacted
00:12:40
her 14 years after the fact she was
00:12:42
surprised that the case hadn't been
00:12:44
solved because dale told her somebody
00:12:46
else had already been arrested for it
00:12:48
and she just assumed this case was done
00:12:50
but that obviously was a lie
00:12:53
and christy told police something she
00:12:55
hadn't mentioned during the original
00:12:57
investigation she said the day after
00:13:00
brian went missing
00:13:03
dale cleaned the inside of his car
00:13:06
he had never cleaned out that trunk
00:13:09
as long as she had known him as long as
00:13:12
he owned that
00:13:14
camaro
00:13:15
why would dale do this
00:13:19
police wondered if brian roof had been
00:13:22
inside that trunk
00:13:24
was there blood was he shot in the car
00:13:25
and wrapped in a blanket and looking for
00:13:27
uh you know trace evidence looking for
00:13:29
blood in the car
00:13:31
but after 14 years
00:13:33
could police find dale bradley's camaro
00:13:36
[Music]
00:13:41
14 years after brian roof's murder
00:13:44
and investigators never lost hope they
00:13:47
would solve the case the thing about
00:13:49
brian he was a very good kid and he was
00:13:52
a very good father
00:13:53
and regardless of the affair i think he
00:13:55
was a very good husband
00:13:57
he just had a lot going on and i think
00:14:00
he would have been able to really make
00:14:02
something of his life and his family if
00:14:04
he was able to continue on in life and
00:14:06
that was cut short
00:14:08
when investigators heard that their
00:14:10
original suspect
00:14:12
dale bradley was now a suspect in yet
00:14:15
another murder investigation they
00:14:17
decided to look once again at the
00:14:20
evidence
00:14:22
and this time
00:14:23
on brian roof's boot
00:14:25
the one they found in the mountains near
00:14:27
his burial site they spotted something
00:14:31
some kind of scuff mark on the bottom of
00:14:34
the boot that looked like reddish orange
00:14:37
paint
00:14:39
when i saw that swatch of paint it just
00:14:41
flashed back to me that that was the
00:14:43
same color of paint
00:14:44
that was on dale bradley's car and i got
00:14:47
excited and i kind of got a little bit
00:14:48
of butterflies and i thought i got him
00:14:52
forensic analyst bill schneck examined
00:14:55
this paint with the stereo microscope
00:14:57
and i noticed it was a smear wasn't like
00:15:00
paint chips that were adhering to the
00:15:01
boot it's actually smeared into the
00:15:03
leather of the bottom of the boot there
00:15:04
was tremendous force to get that paint
00:15:06
smear onto his boot
00:15:09
was it the kind of force caused by
00:15:11
trying to kick your way out of the trunk
00:15:13
of a car for example
00:15:15
bill schneck needed to know if the
00:15:17
makers of dale bradley's camaro had
00:15:19
painted the inside of the trunk
00:15:22
luckily
00:15:23
schneck had a friend who restored old
00:15:26
cars
00:15:27
he just happened to have a 75 camaro and
00:15:29
i was there so we popped the trunk and
00:15:31
indeed they have original paint in the
00:15:32
trunk
00:15:33
so that was good that was useful
00:15:35
dale bradley drove a red 1974 camaro at
00:15:39
the time of brian's murder
00:15:41
the mission now
00:15:43
was to find it
00:15:44
i spent a lot of hours searching for
00:15:47
that car they went up in an airplane and
00:15:50
searched high and low for that car
00:15:52
through a lot of investigation
00:15:54
found that the car had been sold
00:15:57
unfortunately two years after brian's
00:15:59
murder the new owner sold the car for
00:16:01
scrap metal
00:16:03
that car was scrapped i mean it's just
00:16:05
in little cubes it's been melted down
00:16:07
but an examination of the case file
00:16:10
revealed a surprise
00:16:12
14 years earlier an alert detective had
00:16:15
taken paint samples from dale's car
00:16:18
we just took them
00:16:20
it's hard to say why you know just we
00:16:22
just took them and
00:16:23
because there wasn't really much else to
00:16:25
to take those paint samples just sat in
00:16:28
our evidence room for years
00:16:31
bill schneck took paint samples from the
00:16:33
boot and the car and placed them on
00:16:37
slides with an immersion liquid
00:16:40
this eliminated any air trapped between
00:16:42
the sample and the slide
00:16:45
using a polarizing light microscope
00:16:48
magnified up to a thousand times
00:16:51
schneck saw the paint was a lead
00:16:54
chromate paint
00:16:56
i wanted to go back and find out how
00:16:58
unusual is a lead chromate paint
00:17:01
and i contacted the national institute
00:17:03
of science and technology and received a
00:17:05
paint chip known standard from the 74
00:17:07
camaro
00:17:09
using a scanning electron microscope
00:17:12
schneck now did a three-way comparison
00:17:16
he examined paint from the boot
00:17:18
from the car
00:17:20
and from the file sample of a 1974
00:17:23
camaro
00:17:24
all
00:17:25
were identical
00:17:27
paint on the boot came from that
00:17:29
particular car or another car having
00:17:31
those exact same
00:17:33
properties composition
00:17:35
and with this evidence dale bradley was
00:17:38
arrested and charged with brian roof's
00:17:40
murder
00:17:41
it was shocking that
00:17:43
anybody could do something so horrific
00:17:46
let alone somebody that claimed to be a
00:17:48
good friend
00:17:51
prosecutors believe
00:17:53
dale either knew or strongly suspected
00:17:56
brian roof was having an affair with his
00:17:58
wife christy and was afraid she was
00:18:00
going to leave him
00:18:01
i think that he was so angry that
00:18:04
christy and brian
00:18:06
betrayed him that he was going to make
00:18:08
them pay
00:18:11
the forensic evidence suggests dale's
00:18:14
plan was to eliminate the person he
00:18:17
perceived to be
00:18:19
his competition
00:18:21
since he knew brian's hours and when
00:18:24
there would be the least amount of
00:18:25
traffic
00:18:27
he knew exactly when to strike
00:18:37
dale probably forced brian into the
00:18:40
trunk at gunpoint
00:18:53
brian tried to kick his way out of the
00:18:55
trunk during the 30 minute drive when a
00:18:58
piece of the paint became embedded in
00:19:00
his boot
00:19:01
[Music]
00:19:07
when dale got to the burial spot
00:19:10
prosecutors think he ordered brian to
00:19:12
remove his boots so he couldn't run away
00:19:31
he then forced him over to a shallow
00:19:34
grave which prosecutors think he dug
00:19:37
earlier that day
00:19:46
then
00:19:47
shot him with a 22 caliber pistol
00:19:52
the murder weapon was never recovered
00:19:55
it was so typical of dale's personality
00:19:58
to be a coward enough to shoot somebody
00:20:01
in the back and not face him
00:20:03
when he was going to take his life
00:20:07
the paint and circumstantial evidence
00:20:09
were difficult for dale bradley to
00:20:11
refute
00:20:12
he agreed to plead guilty to
00:20:14
second-degree manslaughter and
00:20:16
kidnapping and was sentenced to 40 years
00:20:20
in prison
00:20:21
what bradley didn't realize was that
00:20:23
brian's boot held an important piece of
00:20:26
evidence
00:20:27
that told a story
00:20:30
this cold case was solved because of
00:20:32
that paint chip
00:20:33
it makes me want to go out and look at
00:20:35
every single case and examine every
00:20:37
piece of evidence to see if there's
00:20:39
something that i can do with it it
00:20:40
motivates me to solve other cases
00:20:43
dale bradley remains a suspect in the
00:20:46
murder of his second wife
00:20:49
it's ironic in a way
00:20:51
that brian roof's desperate efforts in
00:20:53
the trunk of dale's car resulted in the
00:20:56
capture of his own killer
00:20:59
just one little thing that's all it
00:21:00
takes in this case it turned out to be
00:21:02
the paint samples
00:21:04
coupled with all the the
00:21:06
the uh
00:21:08
circumstantial evidence in this case and
00:21:10
the physical evidence that you have
00:21:12
that's was just the clincher in this
00:21:14
case
00:21:15
even today though there's a lot of
00:21:16
detectives that are just focusing so
00:21:17
much on dna they're forgetting all the
00:21:19
other avenues that could be approached
00:21:20
with trace evidence such as pain
00:21:22
examination
00:21:23
i hope it sends a loud message that
00:21:25
there is forensics out there that people
00:21:26
who are willing to
00:21:28
continue to look at these cases that
00:21:30
you're not going to get away with murder
00:21:32
and that
00:21:34
that the more they try to cover up some
00:21:36
of their tracks
00:21:37
the more cracks they leave
00:21:44
you
