The Appalling Murder of Taylor Wright | Killers Caught On Camera

June 23, 2024 / 46:50

This episode covers the mysterious disappearance and murder of Taylor Wright in Pensacola, Florida, and the brutal killing of Michelle Hansen in Sunderland, England. Key discussions include the investigation into Taylor's case, her relationship with Ashley MacArthur, and the shocking details of Michelle's murder.

Taylor Wright, a former police officer, went missing in September 2017 after withdrawing $100,000 from her joint account with her ex-husband. Her girlfriend, Cassandra Waller, reported her missing after Taylor failed to return home or contact her son. Detective Chad Willite and his team focused on Ashley MacArthur, who had been entrusted with Taylor's money.

Surveillance footage and cell phone data revealed inconsistencies in Ashley's story about Taylor's last known movements. Eventually, police discovered Taylor's body buried on a farm owned by Ashley's family, leading to Ashley's arrest for murder.

In the second case, Michelle Hansen was found dead in her home with multiple stab wounds after inviting Alexander Carr over for drinks. The investigation revealed Carr's violent history and his eventual capture after a manhunt. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The episode highlights the tragic outcomes of both cases, emphasizing the impact of greed and violence in relationships.

TL;DR

Taylor Wright's disappearance leads to murder charges against her friend Ashley MacArthur, while Michelle Hansen is killed by a man she invited home.

00:02:55
and Jeff eventually took custody of
00:02:57
their son two years later
00:03:01
Taylor moved 8800 miles away to start a
00:03:03
new life in Pensacola
00:03:06
[Music]
00:03:07
Florida Taylor started working as a
00:03:09
private investigator and at the same
00:03:11
time applied for a job at Pensacola
00:03:14
Police
00:03:16
Department she made new friends and
00:03:19
began a romantic relationship with a
00:03:21
woman who she moved in
00:03:23
[Music]
00:03:25
with life was settling down again but in
00:03:28
September 2017
00:03:30
just a few months after moving to
00:03:32
Pensacola Taylor
00:03:36
disappeared her girlfriend at the time
00:03:38
sent me a Facebook message and asking if
00:03:41
I had heard from Taylor if she was
00:03:43
missing it was a shock because that
00:03:46
wasn't anything like her she loved her
00:03:48
son she loved him endlessly and she
00:03:52
would have never just gone and left him
00:03:55
didn't make
00:03:57
sense Taylor was reported missing by her
00:04:00
girlfriend Cassandra
00:04:04
Waller Richard gigliotti was a detective
00:04:07
for the Pensacola Police
00:04:10
Department the officer initially
00:04:11
responded to this said she's an adult if
00:04:14
she wants
00:04:15
to take some time off or take some time
00:04:17
away she's more than welcome to do so
00:04:20
some time I went by I want to say close
00:04:21
to a week or so the same reporting
00:04:24
person Cassandra Waller come to the
00:04:25
station said that she still hadn't seen
00:04:27
Taylor Wright still hadn't heard from
00:04:29
her and was growing a little more
00:04:33
concerned as well as not returning home
00:04:35
to Cassandra Taylor also failed to make
00:04:38
any phone calls to her son who she
00:04:40
usually spoke with every evening I knew
00:04:44
how she felt about her son Drake that
00:04:46
she loved him with all of her heart and
00:04:48
she never would have just left him like
00:04:50
that Taylor was building a new life in
00:04:53
Pensacola despite the distance from her
00:04:55
old life and her child things seemed to
00:04:58
be going well you have a mother who
00:05:01
consistently calls her child now
00:05:03
suddenly not she has an application into
00:05:06
to work at a police department she
00:05:08
wanted to just disappear why are you
00:05:10
applying for jobs
00:05:11
careers something was more than just a
00:05:14
missing person's
00:05:17
case the police needed to speak to
00:05:19
anyone who might have information about
00:05:23
Taylor detective Chad willite was
00:05:26
assigned to the
00:05:28
case well we investiga a Miss iners case
00:05:31
um the first person that we're going to
00:05:33
talk to would be the reporting person
00:05:35
which would be Cassandra Waller in this
00:05:38
case the last day that y'all were
00:05:41
together can you kind of walk me through
00:05:43
that day she made me breakfast she made
00:05:46
me like eggs and bacon and stuff and she
00:05:48
was in no worry for anything you know
00:05:51
just like the M
00:05:52
moment despite a few relationship issues
00:05:55
and some erratic behavior all was well
00:06:00
but her girlfriend received a message
00:06:01
later that day that was out of
00:06:05
character Cassandra didn't hear from
00:06:08
Taylor again and she didn't return
00:06:11
home Bridget Meers Jensen is the
00:06:14
assistant State
00:06:16
Attorney initially when someone goes
00:06:18
missing I think everyone is a suspect so
00:06:21
in this particular case we looked at
00:06:23
Taylor's girlfriend Taylor's
00:06:25
ex-husband possibly anyone that was
00:06:27
involved in her Private Investigations
00:06:29
were
00:06:31
police looked at Taylor's
00:06:33
finances cameras that scann checks
00:06:35
revealed a sudden large withdrawal from
00:06:37
an account that she shared with her
00:06:41
ex-husband Taylor removed approximately
00:06:43
$100,000 in cash out of the joint
00:06:47
account that they had and the judge had
00:06:49
ordered Taylor to give the money back
00:06:53
based on her ongoing dispute with her
00:06:56
ex-husband Jeff and the fact that
00:06:59
there's $100,000 missing from the
00:07:01
account he is a potential suspect in the
00:07:05
case we did contact Jeff Wright he was a
00:07:08
friendly enough guy still had custody of
00:07:11
their child he gave us a little
00:07:14
background that Taylor you know has from
00:07:17
time to time taken off and didn't
00:07:19
communicate with friends but did agree
00:07:22
that she would still communicate with
00:07:23
her
00:07:25
son there was still one key person the
00:07:28
police needed to speak with
00:07:30
with a friend of hers called Ashley
00:07:33
MacArthur who Taylor had trusted with a
00:07:36
large sum of money Ashley MacArthur was
00:07:40
a friend of Taylor Ashley's husband
00:07:43
actually worked with Taylor in the
00:07:44
Private Investigations industry and so
00:07:47
that's how Ashley and Taylor
00:07:49
met Ashley MacArthur had worked briefly
00:07:52
as a crime scen technician at the
00:07:54
sheriff's office she also worked for her
00:07:57
family's Amusement arcade company
00:08:00
which supplied video games to local
00:08:03
businesses Cassandra Waller paints this
00:08:05
picture Taylor let Ashley hold a
00:08:08
significant amount of money and that
00:08:09
Taylor kept trying to get the money back
00:08:12
Taylor grew more and more concerned
00:08:14
about this and expressed this to
00:08:17
Cassandra Taylor wri's girlfriend told
00:08:19
the police that Ashley had promised to
00:08:22
give Taylor her money back on September
00:08:26
8th she was like okay well Ash is coming
00:08:28
over we're going to go to Ash's bank and
00:08:31
we're going to pick up my money Ash had
00:08:33
pulled up and I was like all right you
00:08:35
know we hugged we kissed I love you I
00:08:38
went my
00:08:42
[Music]
00:08:44
way that intimate moment was the last
00:08:47
time Cassandra said she saw
00:08:50
Taylor she also claimed that Taylor had
00:08:53
a funny feeling about
00:08:57
Ashley it seemed like you can parid she
00:09:00
was talking about how she felt like
00:09:01
something just wasn't right with Ash
00:09:03
like she wasn't sure if Ash had her
00:09:04
money or not because Taylor had been
00:09:06
trying to get the money for like four or
00:09:09
5 days and I was like Taylor you know
00:09:11
she's probably been really busy you know
00:09:13
she goes no cash she goes like I'm
00:09:15
telling you something just doesn't feel
00:09:16
right with me I don't want to think this
00:09:19
but like I want to give you guys like
00:09:21
whatever you guys need I be so wrong no
00:09:24
I I'd rather you be wrong and have a
00:09:26
feeling or know something to tell us I
00:09:28
to be mad at me cuz I like May or
00:09:31
something as do even know
00:09:34
anything Cassandra's testimony meant the
00:09:36
police were now becoming much more
00:09:38
focused on Taylor's friend Ashley she
00:09:41
was called in for a
00:09:43
chat to start with your relationship to
00:09:48
Taylor okay she was more than happy to
00:09:52
cooperate and you all met how long ago
00:09:55
00:09:59
how often did y'all hang out
00:10:02
um probably once a week twice a week we
00:10:06
kind of hone in on the day of The
00:10:09
Disappearance with with Ashley and
00:10:11
really try to get her locked into a
00:10:13
timeline the last day that you saw her
00:10:16
was what day on Friday she discusses
00:10:20
going and picking up Taylor the morning
00:10:22
of we
00:10:24
went back to my house I believe and what
00:10:28
were what was your purpose purpose for
00:10:29
going back there um to get the any of
00:10:33
the papers that I had for her and the
00:10:35
money and stuff for her so the money was
00:10:37
being kept at your house right how long
00:10:40
had the money been being kept there um
00:10:42
it was only there for a
00:10:45
few a few days where was it at before
00:10:48
that Taylor had it was Taylor trying to
00:10:52
hide until she could recoup maybe funds
00:10:54
that she had
00:10:55
spent was Taylor hiding this money with
00:10:58
the hopes that they would just let it go
00:11:02
that was that was kind of an
00:11:05
unknown Ashley gave a detailed account
00:11:08
of what happened on September
00:11:11
8th I went to the gas station there to
00:11:13
get a drink she was on the
00:11:17
phone and I went in the store got a
00:11:20
drink and got her and her
00:11:23
beer how much has she been drinking that
00:11:25
day was she like intoxicated like she
00:11:28
didn't seem to
00:11:30
be but I mean I don't drink at 10:00 in
00:11:33
the morning either so I don't sure and
00:11:36
in fact I said something to her I was
00:11:37
like beer at this time of the morning
00:11:40
she was like well it's 5:00 somewhere
00:11:42
according to Ashley they proceed to
00:11:45
Ashley's Family Farm out in East Milton
00:11:50
this was a family farm that I had
00:11:51
instead we just drove out there and she
00:11:54
was
00:11:56
just team I guess she says Taylor rides
00:12:01
some of the horses and they um come back
00:12:04
into Pensacola and Ashley says Taylor
00:12:08
gets into an Uber and leaves her
00:12:11
residence she was fine she just said
00:12:13
that she wanted to go have a beer and
00:12:15
that she was going to get an Uber to
00:12:17
take her to go have a beer Ashley gives
00:12:21
us permission to look into her cell
00:12:24
phone at the time we kept the phone and
00:12:28
had the analyst plug it in and start
00:12:30
start chipping away at
00:12:33
downloading the police used the cell
00:12:35
phone data to check on Ashley's timeline
00:12:37
of
00:12:38
events then they tried to find evidence
00:12:41
for the route that Ashley said she and
00:12:44
Taylor
00:12:45
took we're looking for any kind of
00:12:48
surveillance cameras that we can find
00:12:50
any kind of convenience stores that they
00:12:51
may drive
00:12:53
past they began with the gas station
00:12:56
that Ashley and Taylor went into on the
00:12:58
last day to t er was
00:13:01
seen this is surveillance footage from a
00:13:04
fuel station convenience store called
00:13:06
Tom
00:13:08
Thumb as MacArthur going
00:13:10
in
00:13:12
purchasing some drinks she just grabbed
00:13:15
a beer out of the cooler she's on the
00:13:17
phone
00:13:19
here so it's presumed here that Taylor
00:13:22
was likely in the vehicle she certainly
00:13:25
said that Taylor was in the
00:13:28
vehicle the the video of Ashley in the
00:13:30
gas station backed up her
00:13:32
timeline but when they got the cell
00:13:34
phone data back Ashley's version of
00:13:36
movements didn't match the root mapping
00:13:39
from her
00:13:40
phone neither Ashley's cell phone or
00:13:43
Taylor's cell phone ever goes over to
00:13:47
East Milton in fact their cell phon stay
00:13:50
over in the area of that P station where
00:13:52
Ashley was observed making purchases
00:13:55
inside the
00:13:56
store we start looking for or any kind
00:14:00
of property that either of them may have
00:14:03
connections to in that area we know that
00:14:06
Ashley her maiden name is Brit so we
00:14:10
type in the last name Brit and it brings
00:14:13
up Brit
00:14:15
Road the police discovered Ashley's
00:14:17
family owned a farm on Brit Road just
00:14:20
north of the gas station where she was
00:14:22
caught on
00:14:23
[Music]
00:14:25
camera it's nowhere near where Ashley
00:14:28
said they were
00:14:30
this is not the farm in East Milton
00:14:32
she's talking about it's in cantonement
00:14:35
Bula area here in esami
00:14:37
County detectives started to analyze the
00:14:40
inconsistencies in Ashley's version of
00:14:43
events they also grew suspicious of her
00:14:46
eagerness to help during the
00:14:49
investigation Ashley called several
00:14:50
times inquiring about the case she would
00:14:53
ask what we were up to or what we had
00:14:56
going on or if we' made any progress no
00:14:59
one else during the investigation called
00:15:01
as half as many times as Ashley
00:15:03
[Music]
00:15:05
did someone being too involved in the
00:15:09
investigation by constantly calling the
00:15:11
police is something that I've seen
00:15:12
before and it is again one of those
00:15:15
circumstances where the person's
00:15:17
probably overcompensating so they are
00:15:20
trying to show that they're concerned
00:15:21
about their friend what they're trying
00:15:23
to sort of theatrically perform is the
00:15:27
worry friend but what they're obviously
00:15:29
doing because that's not how normal
00:15:31
people behave is they're obviously
00:15:33
trying to get information about the case
00:15:35
so that they can adjust their story as
00:15:36
needed and almost certainly doing
00:15:39
something as unusual as this is going to
00:15:43
raise suspicions rather than qu
00:15:46
them her bank records enabled the police
00:15:49
to track down surveillance footage of
00:15:51
Ashley making a series of unusual
00:15:55
transactions you can see a large sum of
00:15:57
money in her her hand that she was
00:16:01
depositing into the ATM
00:16:04
machines we also received the image of
00:16:06
the check that uh Ashley had
00:16:10
deposited and you'll see various uh
00:16:14
images of Ashley making various
00:16:18
transactions crucial footage at the ATM
00:16:21
revealed inconsistencies in Ashley's
00:16:24
version of
00:16:25
events we get Ashley deposit depositing
00:16:29
Taylor's checks Taylor had checks made
00:16:31
out to her in her name and yet Ashley's
00:16:34
on camera depositing
00:16:36
them we look at Taylor's signatures
00:16:40
spanning back months and the signature
00:16:43
on the back of the check that Ashley's
00:16:45
depositing doesn't match the
00:16:47
signature in another breakthrough Ashley
00:16:50
was caught on camera at a Home Depot
00:16:52
store the day after Taylor disappeared
00:16:55
she had an unusual shopping list
00:16:59
in the cart is concrete and potting soil
00:17:02
this is an employee that's she's got
00:17:05
helping her push the
00:17:08
cart and then she goes up and pays cash
00:17:11
for the
00:17:13
items when the police checked out
00:17:15
another one of Ashley's interview claims
00:17:18
they were
00:17:19
baffled Ashley told us that Taylor had
00:17:22
taken an Uber from her house we
00:17:25
investigated that we learned she hadn't
00:17:27
used Uber and quite some time we also
00:17:30
checked other ride share companies and
00:17:33
none of those had any kind of records
00:17:36
with Taylor still missing the way Ashley
00:17:39
MacArthur behaved was in complete
00:17:41
contrast to Taylor's girlfriend
00:17:43
Cassandra on the other hand we ask her
00:17:45
pass codes to her phone she gives them
00:17:47
right over we ask her for consent to
00:17:48
search everything she signs everything
00:17:50
open
00:17:51
book it became quite apparent that
00:17:54
Cassandra wasn't involved in Taylor's
00:17:57
disappearance
00:18:00
Taylor's ex-husband Jeff Wright was in
00:18:02
the Army and many miles away at the time
00:18:04
of her
00:18:06
disappearance detective gigliotti was
00:18:08
able to make contact with his command up
00:18:11
at his base and confirm that he's been
00:18:14
at work the whole time and he hasn't
00:18:15
left U that area so he was it was easy
00:18:19
to rule him out as any kind of potential
00:18:21
suspect in the
00:18:22
case with Cassandra and Jeff in the
00:18:25
clear all the evidence seemed to be
00:18:27
pointing towards Ashley
00:18:30
Arthur the big question was is Ashley
00:18:33
lying to us because she's hiding
00:18:37
Taylor helping her hide out or is she
00:18:40
lying to us cuz she hurt
00:18:41
her the police decided they needed
00:18:44
another conversation with
00:18:46
Ashley at the same time they planed to
00:18:49
search three Key Properties including
00:18:51
the farm on Brit road we have teams in
00:18:55
place to execute all those at one time
00:18:58
we o have myself and gigliotti we are
00:19:01
going to conduct the interview here at
00:19:03
the police
00:19:04
department everything was riding on this
00:19:07
carefully planned
00:19:09
operation the police needed Ashley to
00:19:11
reveal what really happened to Taylor
00:19:14
and they needed to find hard evidence
00:19:17
from the properties being
00:19:19
[Music]
00:19:22
searched hi how you been
00:19:26
doing when we were conducting an
00:19:27
investigation we come across like I said
00:19:29
several things we wanted to confront her
00:19:33
with the information at 12:10 you are in
00:19:36
here
00:19:38
M we know that your aunt and uncle and
00:19:41
Kyle own the farm there on Brit
00:19:44
Road well at that point first time
00:19:46
really ever in our interviews with
00:19:48
Ashley she changed her
00:19:50
story Ashley initially told us she went
00:19:53
out to East Milton well you look at the
00:19:55
cell records and it never went out to
00:19:56
East Milton it's showing that you're
00:19:59
probably near that farm or if not at
00:20:01
that farm and you're there when this is
00:20:05
the time when you're telling us that
00:20:06
you're probably Milton or headed towards
00:20:07
the milon CU it's uh 12:10 in the
00:20:11
afternoon 12:46 you're still covering
00:20:13
the farm
00:20:16
1301 you're out here for quite a while
00:20:19
then you leave around at least at
00:20:22
1344 what were youall doing out there at
00:20:24
this Farm we know y'all were there we
00:20:27
picked up some
00:20:29
um stuff that Taylor had there that we
00:20:32
had what was that she had store um some
00:20:35
kind of lock box that she had actually
00:20:38
now tells us that the two did in fact go
00:20:41
to the Brit Road farm that day this is
00:20:43
the first time she'd ever mentioned this
00:20:46
why would you not tell us that or
00:20:48
because she asked me not to tell anyone
00:20:52
ever you know we're investigating a
00:20:55
missing person you called us dozens of
00:20:57
times
00:20:59
why not say hey we went out to this
00:21:01
location why why hold back and her
00:21:04
excuse was is that Taylor just didn't
00:21:06
want us to know that she went out
00:21:08
there which doesn't make any sense so
00:21:11
you're the only one that was with her on
00:21:13
this day at this farm that you did not
00:21:15
disclose to us I didn't do anything tell
00:21:18
you this if she's at that farm we're
00:21:20
going to find her because we're
00:21:21
executing the search one out there right
00:21:22
now that's fine but she's not going to
00:21:24
be there where is she at I don't know
00:21:27
where she in her second interview when
00:21:28
she came in she had a completely
00:21:30
different demeanor she was not as
00:21:33
forthcoming she clearly did not want to
00:21:35
answer questions and she clearly did not
00:21:37
want to be as helpful as she was
00:21:40
initially the police were holding out
00:21:42
for information from the search teams
00:21:44
that would enable them to keep Ashley
00:21:46
MacArthur in
00:21:47
custody we're trying to prolong the
00:21:50
interview as long as possible it was a
00:21:53
very long time for during the interview
00:21:55
of not being
00:21:57
contacted with Ashley holding back
00:22:00
detective Chad willite decided to go in
00:22:03
hard me for a second don't cross the
00:22:08
legs when I removed her chair and turned
00:22:10
it around I wanted to break down
00:22:12
whatever defense she had if I can get
00:22:14
her thinking about how uncomfortable she
00:22:17
is maybe she will slip
00:22:21
up me for a second don't cross your legs
00:22:24
on for a
00:22:27
second don't let us tell your
00:22:30
story we're going to this is going to
00:22:32
tell us what
00:22:34
happened this
00:22:36
is exactly the kind of thing that you'd
00:22:39
expect with What's called the read model
00:22:40
of interrogations which is more akin to
00:22:43
good cop bad cop than other forms of
00:22:46
interrogations or interviews and this
00:22:48
idea of sort of physically cornering
00:22:50
somebody or physically intimidating
00:22:51
someone by changing the room is very in
00:22:55
line with that
00:22:57
technique don't let us tell us something
00:22:59
that may not be
00:23:00
true tell us what happened I think at
00:23:04
this point I need an attorney because it
00:23:06
seems to be that you'll think that I did
00:23:09
something to
00:23:12
her okay I respect
00:23:16
that with no solid evidence to keep
00:23:19
Ashley in custody they had to release
00:23:23
her it almost feels to a degree like you
00:23:26
failed right because as an investigator
00:23:29
you want that confession uh and we
00:23:31
didn't get it everything was now resting
00:23:34
on the search at the farm on Brit Road
00:23:37
detective gigliotti made contact with
00:23:40
the team on site I happen to call one of
00:23:43
the sergeants at the time while he's on
00:23:46
the phone with me he's yelling in the
00:23:48
background we have a
00:23:51
body unquestionably we have
00:23:56
Remains the police had to confirm who
00:23:59
the remains belonged
00:24:01
to a unique item of jewelry helped
00:24:06
identification with had pictures of
00:24:08
Taylor's necklace she commonly wore uh
00:24:11
Cassandra said she was wearing it the
00:24:12
day of The Disappearance and sure enough
00:24:15
the necklace was
00:24:16
[Music]
00:24:18
there Taylor's Body was discovered on
00:24:21
the other side of a fence in an area
00:24:23
that was kind of wooded she was wrapped
00:24:26
up in a tarp
00:24:29
she was covered with concrete and
00:24:30
potting
00:24:33
soil I will never forget the day that
00:24:35
they announced you know they had found
00:24:37
her
00:24:38
body it was difficult cuz Not only was
00:24:42
she murdered that her body was put in a
00:24:45
grave that she just left her there to be
00:24:49
it's it's
00:24:52
awful they were able to determine pretty
00:24:55
quickly what appeared to be uh bullet
00:24:58
wound to the back of the
00:25:01
skull the remains are taken over the
00:25:04
medical examiner's office to confirm
00:25:06
cause of death which was later
00:25:07
determined to be a gunshot wound to to
00:25:10
the back of Taylor's head once the body
00:25:13
was located everyone was on board that
00:25:15
it was time to arrest Ashley and
00:25:18
prosecute
00:25:19
her Bridget Myers Jensen led the case
00:25:23
against Ashley in the summer of 2019 it
00:25:26
was very significant to law enforcement
00:25:28
and to the prosecution of the case that
00:25:30
Taylor's Body was actually located
00:25:33
Ashley could have used any defense I
00:25:35
mean she could have come up with
00:25:36
anything if we didn't have a body uh to
00:25:39
to prove that Taylor had been actually
00:25:42
murdered the video surveillance footage
00:25:44
proved vital for the
00:25:46
prosecution the surveillance footage of
00:25:49
the store and Home Depot not only gave
00:25:53
us the evidence that Ashley was
00:25:55
purchasing concrete and potting soil but
00:25:56
what it does is shows us the accuracy of
00:25:59
the cell phone records right because
00:26:02
defense Council later in trial paints
00:26:04
this picture that the cell phone records
00:26:07
can be inconsistent and
00:26:10
inaccurate and we can show that well in
00:26:13
fact if the cell phone records show
00:26:17
Ashley's phone covering the Tom Thumb
00:26:19
and she's in fact on the surveillance
00:26:21
footage at the time similar to The Home
00:26:23
Depot and surveillance is corroborating
00:26:26
that that these in these phone records
00:26:28
are in fact very accurate it also helps
00:26:32
show the jury there's always that doubt
00:26:35
well someone else could have deposited
00:26:37
those checks into Ashley's account but
00:26:39
when they're on camera it's hard to
00:26:41
refute the fact that she deposited them
00:26:45
a range of cameras were used to help
00:26:47
capture Taylor's
00:26:49
killer but the question remains why
00:26:52
would Ashley MacArthur kill Taylor
00:26:56
Wright Taylor had withdrawn on
00:26:58
approximately $100,000 from a bank
00:27:01
account that she should not have
00:27:03
withdrawn based on court proceedings
00:27:05
with her
00:27:06
ex-husband in an effort to hide the
00:27:09
money I believe she gave the money to
00:27:12
Ashley MacArthur to
00:27:14
hold Ashley at the time was having an
00:27:18
affair and Ashley was showering this man
00:27:21
with gifts the motive of the homicide
00:27:25
was greed essentially Ashley Arthur was
00:27:29
in a position where Taylor needed her
00:27:31
money back but Ashley couldn't give it
00:27:33
back because Ashley had spent it
00:27:37
all we always want a profound
00:27:40
psychological reason for murder and it
00:27:44
rarely exists it's often much more
00:27:46
trivial and very often it's about things
00:27:48
like money this shouldn't be the kind of
00:27:51
thing that motivates murder and yet much
00:27:54
smaller debts have also led to similar
00:27:56
outcomes
00:27:58
when I found out what had happened to
00:28:00
Taylor it was devastating devastating
00:28:03
that somebody she obviously loved and
00:28:06
cared
00:28:07
for did that to her that they would kill
00:28:11
her over something is small as money you
00:28:14
it's
00:28:17
just just
00:28:22
awful after a week-long trial the
00:28:25
verdict came in Ashley MacArthur was
00:28:28
found guilty of first-degree
00:28:30
premeditated
00:28:32
murder she was sentenced to life in
00:28:36
prison women killing women is so rare
00:28:39
that we have almost no research on it at
00:28:42
all but we can take a little bit of the
00:28:45
research on women who perpetrate violent
00:28:48
crimes and what we know is that women
00:28:50
who perpetrate gun crimes are more
00:28:52
likely to score high in certain
00:28:54
Psychopathic traits so they're more
00:28:56
likely for example to be low in empathy
00:28:58
they're more likely to be manipulative
00:29:00
and that is a package that makes women
00:29:04
more likely to offend violently using
00:29:06
guns but even that we we really know
00:29:08
very little about why women perpetrate
00:29:11
violent offenses because so few women
00:29:14
[Music]
00:29:21
do Taylor was an amazing person she had
00:29:25
a huge heart and would she loved you she
00:29:28
loved
00:29:29
EIG and she she was just a breath of
00:29:33
fresh air she was very special to
00:29:36
me yep she was there through a lot of
00:29:39
things in
00:29:41
life I want people to know that she was
00:29:44
a good person and that her life
00:29:49
mattered okay give me a
00:29:51
kiss I love you
00:29:55
[Music]
00:30:00
Ashley and Taylor were just friends new
00:30:04
friends but what do you do if you feel a
00:30:06
friend is not good for your mental
00:30:08
[Music]
00:30:10
health there's so much in novels and
00:30:14
movies and anecdotes from people around
00:30:18
us about romantic relationships and
00:30:20
breakups and what those look like and
00:30:21
how to end a relationship but there's so
00:30:24
little comparatively on how to end a
00:30:26
friendship or how to deal with a friend
00:30:29
who's not behaving appropriately or who
00:30:30
you're not getting on with anymore um or
00:30:33
who's manipulating you and I think
00:30:35
there's a real knowledge Gap there and a
00:30:38
skills Gap and what do you even do if
00:30:40
you've got a bad friend how do you get
00:30:42
rid of this
00:30:44
person in our next case a friend of a
00:30:47
friend proves fatal after being
00:30:50
secretive about his
00:30:56
past in the UK tin and wear

Sunderland a port city on the northeast
00:31:05
coast of
00:31:06
[Music]
00:31:07
England home to Michelle
00:31:11
Hansen Michelle was 47 years old she had
00:31:15
five kids and one grandchild she was
00:31:17
very close to them all her children
00:31:19
often spoke about sharing secrets for
00:31:21
her they found it very comfortable to
00:31:23
talk to her and they felt like they
00:31:24
could tell her anything Michelle was
00:31:27
known as a very um outgoing person she
00:31:29
had quite a lot of friends she was very
00:31:30
family orientated love going to parties
00:31:32
L singing she was generally the life and
00:31:35
soul of the
00:31:37
party in early 2022 Michelle invited
00:31:41
friends and family to come over for a
00:31:43
drink but after going quiet the day
00:31:46
after a family member checked in on her
00:31:50
and was confronted by a devastating
00:31:54
scene Michelle's body was found by a
00:31:56
family member face down on the floor she
00:32:00
had about 29 uh stab wounds to her neck
00:32:03
and paid to have blood force trauma to
00:32:06
her head as
00:32:07
well there was a br and plate nearby and
00:32:10
she was found with porcelain in in her
00:32:12
hair as
00:32:14
well it was a brutal attack that ended
00:32:17
in Michelle's
00:32:21
death when the police arrived they
00:32:23
cleared the scene taped the area off
00:32:27
looked around for evidence
00:32:28
any sort of forensic details that they
00:32:30
could
00:32:32
find they found blood on a window pane
00:32:35
in the bathroom they also found empty
00:32:37
bottles of
00:32:39
alcohol the police sent the evidence off
00:32:42
for DNA
00:32:43
testing Michelle's body was sent for an
00:32:49
autopsy a family member told the police
00:32:53
about a possible suspect who was seen
00:32:55
with Michelle the night she had friends
00:32:57
over
00:32:58
[Music]
00:33:01
shell appeared to be quite comfortable
00:33:03
in his company she was snuggling up to
00:33:05
him she even was said to have uh looked
00:33:08
like she found him quite attractive when
00:33:10
the family member left she said that she
00:33:12
was
00:33:13
fine the family member gave the police a
00:33:16
rough description of the man and his
00:33:19
name Alexander
00:33:24
Carr the police urgently needed to speak
00:33:27
with Alex
00:33:28
as soon as Alex car has been highlighted
00:33:31
as a suspect or a person of interest
00:33:33
then the police will have gone and
00:33:35
started to investigate where he might be
00:33:38
his
00:33:39
whereabouts he was a current student so
00:33:42
they were seen if he'd had student
00:33:44
lodgings or contacted his friends on the
00:33:49
call police started looking for
00:33:51
surveillance footage tracking back to
00:33:54
the time Michelle's body was
00:33:56
found they were aware that he didn't
00:33:59
have access to a vehicle so the obvious
00:34:02
way in which someone would leave the
00:34:04
locality would be to use public
00:34:08
transport on December 2nd a man matching
00:34:12
Alexander car's description was captured
00:34:15
by bus surveillance
00:34:20
cameras Ray Evans is a forensic image
00:34:23
analyst who works regularly with the
00:34:26
police we know that he's a white male we
00:34:29
can see that he has a shaved head the
00:34:32
shape approximately of his
00:34:36
ear he's wearing a backpack that would
00:34:39
give the police um a little more
00:34:42
information so the footage could be used
00:34:44
for tracking the time the date and the
00:34:48
location we can then utilize that
00:34:51
footage to track people across a
00:34:54
location for a certain amount of time
00:34:57
that would be very useful cuz it it
00:34:58
would place somebody in a particular
00:35:02
position the bus footage also helped the
00:35:05
police work out where Alexander Carr was
00:35:07
heading buses have a you know specific
00:35:10
routes if they've got footage of him
00:35:12
getting on the bus being on the bus and
00:35:14
then getting off the bus it would tell
00:35:16
you approximately which direction he's
00:35:18
going in it's all about getting that
00:35:21
little bit of information that allows
00:35:23
the police to assess what the next step
00:35:25
might be of a person that they're
00:35:27
looking for was very very useful
00:35:31
indeed Professor Coral dando is a
00:35:34
forensic
00:35:35
psychologist the footage revealed
00:35:37
important details about Alexander Carr
00:35:40
which proved helpful for the police
00:35:43
investigation it reveals information
00:35:46
about him about his distinctive walk we
00:35:48
refer to that as a gate so the way in
00:35:50
which people walk has been used quite a
00:35:53
lot to identify individuals even when we
00:35:56
can't see their face so he's got this
00:35:58
sort of swagger his feet are turned out
00:36:01
and he does swagger from one side to
00:36:03
another and it is quite an unusual
00:36:07
walk as the last known person to see
00:36:10
Michelle the police needed to speak with
00:36:12
Alexander Carr but he was proving
00:36:15
difficult to track
00:36:19
down Alexander car was known as a a bit
00:36:23
of an urban survivalist he was used to
00:36:26
spend time outdoor a lot that was one of
00:36:29
his
00:36:30
Hobbies he's had periods of homelessness
00:36:33
and I think they've been at various
00:36:34
places around the country it would have
00:36:37
taken them a while to track him down in
00:36:40
terms of looking at all the particular
00:36:43
areas of the country that he might
00:36:46
be but police received a tip off and
00:36:49
moved in to raid the
00:36:55
property down
00:37:00
this is footage from mobile phone it was
00:37:03
filmed by a neighbor you'll notice that
00:37:05
they are
00:37:06
armed police come the door
00:37:09
down it's important to get the suspect
00:37:12
quickly because if he turns out to be
00:37:14
the perpetrator the murderer then he's a
00:37:17
danger to other people
00:37:29
they didn't know if he was inside and
00:37:31
after several attempts to coax Alex out
00:37:34
they entered the
00:37:36
property Alex was not inside but the
00:37:39
police found a jacket heavily stained
00:37:41
with Michelle's
00:37:43
blood you wouldn't expect to see things
00:37:46
such as blood hair bodily fluids unless
00:37:50
he'd been involved in some sort of
00:37:52
violent incident with
00:37:55
her Alexander Carr was is now the prime
00:37:58
suspect in Michelle's murder and he was
00:38:00
on the
00:38:02
run a huge Manhunt was launched the
00:38:05
police were trolling through CCTV
00:38:07
footage the police were urging people
00:38:09
not to approach him if they saw him he
00:38:11
was someone who enjoyed being outside he
00:38:14
considered himself to be an urban
00:38:16
survivalist so no one knew way he could
00:38:18
be at
00:38:20
all with a killer on the loose news of
00:38:23
Michelle's death was met with sorrow and
00:38:26
alarm
00:38:27
no one could really believe what
00:38:29
happened people had heard about the uh
00:38:31
the violent we that she she died there
00:38:33
was a lot of fear and uh quite a lot of
00:38:37
shock it was unclear why anyone would
00:38:40
murder such a well-loved member of the
00:38:43
community Michelle's daughter Shannon
00:38:45
Brown appealed to the public to help
00:38:47
catch her mom's
00:38:50
killer my mom was a caring kind and
00:38:53
loving person she would never hurt
00:38:55
anyone even if someone did something to
00:38:57
her she will forgive them because she
00:38:59
always saw the good in
00:39:01
people please if you have any
00:39:03
information which can help the place
00:39:04
with that investigation don't hesitate
00:39:06
to get in touch with them any little
00:39:08
piece of information could help our mom
00:39:11
deserves Justice thank
00:39:13
[Music]
00:39:16
you the charity Crim Stoppers put
00:39:19
Alexander Carr on their most wanted list
00:39:22
it offered a
00:39:23
£10,000 reward for information leading
00:39:26
to his arrest
00:39:28
[Music]
00:39:29
the police also made the decision to
00:39:30
release the footage from the
00:39:32
bus the reason it's given to the public
00:39:34
is to jog their memory to see if they've
00:39:37
seen this person on that particular day
00:39:40
and that then gives the police something
00:39:41
that they can you know tie into and uh
00:39:44
refer back to so it's it's useful as
00:39:47
very useful as
00:39:48
reference obviously the the hope is that
00:39:52
they will strike gold and someone says
00:39:54
well I know that person very well and I
00:39:57
can vouch that um this is the person who
00:40:00
I think it
00:40:01
is but Alexander had slipped off the
00:40:05
radar he was on the run for quite a
00:40:07
while and as the deers went by the
00:40:09
police were growing more and more
00:40:11
concerned as were the
00:40:13
community during the investigation the
00:40:15
police received the DNA results from the
00:40:17
blood at the murder
00:40:20
scene it was a direct match for
00:40:23
Alexander Carr
00:40:28
as the police dug further into Alexander
00:40:30
Carr's history they found a disturbing
00:40:33
pattern of
00:40:35
violence in 2010 car was sentenced to 3
00:40:39
and a half years in prison for a hammer
00:40:43
attack it would be likely that someone
00:40:46
that's got a background of attacking
00:40:48
another human being with a
00:40:50
hammer violent nasty aggressive will go
00:40:55
on to be offend
00:40:58
Alexander carrr posed a real danger to
00:41:01
society and he was still on the
00:41:04
loose 18 days in counting then the
00:41:08
police got another tip off there was
00:41:11
information that car was in the north
00:41:13
London area police then focused her
00:41:16
attention on the upper Hol railway
00:41:19
station police moved in to arrest
00:41:23
him you move move
00:41:27
move do not move
00:41:31
police hands up Alex you got armed
00:41:33
police pointing weapons at
00:41:35
you laser guided sights on the canvas a
00:41:39
knife is used for Access we're going to
00:41:42
open this door you do not move okay you
00:41:44
follow instructions you
00:41:48
understand do not
00:41:50
move no on the
00:41:53
left
00:41:55
understand three loaded automatic rifles
00:42:00
get stay where you are pointed inside
00:42:03
the
00:42:06
tent typically one wouldn't want to go
00:42:09
and do a complex arrest such as this in
00:42:12
Woodland in the dark he's a known
00:42:16
violent offender with a violent history
00:42:20
so they will be concerned that he's got
00:42:22
a
00:42:24
weapon anything about your person which
00:42:26
could harm us sh no no good and they
00:42:30
will also be concerned for their own
00:42:32
safety as well as his
00:42:37
safety the W how
00:42:40
know at this particular point he's
00:42:43
managed to evade arrest for a certain
00:42:45
number of weeks so that may have given
00:42:47
him confidence that actually he was
00:42:50
being very smart being very clever and
00:42:53
maybe didn't think he was ever going to
00:42:55
be apprehended
00:42:58
Alexander Carr was transported back to
00:43:01
the
00:43:02
Northeast David Huntley was in the court
00:43:04
on the first day of his
00:43:06
trial when I arrived at court he seemed
00:43:09
quite disheveled and quite bewildered uh
00:43:11
didn't really seem to know where he was
00:43:12
at the time he'd been on the run for
00:43:14
over two weeks living in a tent so he he
00:43:16
wasn't in the best frame of mind at that
00:43:18
point everyone was quite pleased that
00:43:20
this suspect had finally been
00:43:23
caught during the trial the full details
00:43:26
of what happened on the the night of
00:43:27
Michelle's murder became
00:43:29
clear Michelle met car earlier that
00:43:33
night she invited him into her home they
00:43:37
shared drinks they had a laugh together
00:43:40
a family member actually uh arrived at
00:43:42
the property as well saw them both when
00:43:45
the family member left Paul was left
00:43:48
alone with Michelle that's when he
00:43:50
carried out the brute La
00:43:52
tuck he chalked her smashed a plate over
00:43:56
our head he beat her up pretty badly as
00:43:59
well as stabbing her around 29 times in
00:44:01
the
00:44:04
neck after the murder he tried to find a
00:44:07
key to get out uh couldn't find one had
00:44:10
to resort to climb out a bathroom window
00:44:11
and Escape that
00:44:14
way at first Alexander Carr pleaded
00:44:17
guilty to manslaughter with diminished
00:44:21
responsibility Alex car has quite a
00:44:25
complex psychological back
00:44:27
ground in the past he has had a lot of
00:44:31
mental health
00:44:33
episodes he has been diagnosed with
00:44:35
post-traumatic stress disorder and
00:44:38
psychosis and also some borderline
00:44:42
personality
00:44:43
disorders there can be triggers that can
00:44:46
trigger a serious episode or incident
00:44:50
and when that happens that individual
00:44:53
then can suffer um catastrophic
00:44:57
drop in their mental health and that can
00:45:00
sometimes uh result in very violent
00:45:05
Behavior despite KN finew well about his
00:45:09
mental health condition his his mental
00:45:11
illnesses his previous psychosis uh he
00:45:14
knew that if he consumed drinking drugs
00:45:16
that it would affect him badly and he
00:45:19
chose on that night to to make that
00:45:21
decision and self-medicate um and and do
00:45:24
exactly what he knew he shouldn't have
00:45:25
done and that was drinking and and
00:45:27
taking drugs and it ended in the worst
00:45:30
way possible for
00:45:34
Michelle Alexander Carr pleaded guilty
00:45:37
to Michelle Hansen's
00:45:39
[Music]
00:45:42
murder he was sentenced to life in
00:45:45
prison with a minimum term of 19
00:45:50
years Michelle's family were were left
00:45:52
devastated and completely broken he took
00:45:56
the mother's life away from them and uh
00:45:59
they'll never forgive him for that
00:46:01
they've been left traumatized and
00:46:03
they'll never be able to get that time
00:46:04
back that they shared with her
