Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 10, Episode 7 - Updated Full Episode

March 16, 2022 / 48:51

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the tragic death of six-year-old Katherine Corzilius, the life of cat burglar Alan Golder, and the controversial Bible Code.

The episode begins with the story of Katherine Corzilius, who went missing after a short walk home in Austin, Texas. Her mother, Nancy, recounts the day of Katherine's disappearance and the subsequent discovery of her body. Investigators question whether Katherine was a victim of foul play, as her injuries suggest she may have been abducted.

Next, the episode features Alan Golder, a notorious cat burglar known for stealing millions from wealthy victims. Golder's criminal career began at a young age, and he has been linked to numerous high-profile burglaries. Authorities believe he has returned to crime after serving time in prison.

The episode also discusses the Bible Code, a theory proposed by journalist Michael Drosnin, claiming that the Bible contains hidden messages predicting major historical events. Drosnin's controversial claims have sparked debate among scholars and skeptics alike.

Finally, the episode highlights the case of baby Sabrina Eisenberg, who disappeared from her crib in Florida. The investigation into her disappearance led to her parents becoming suspects, raising questions about their involvement in the case.

TL;DR

Katherine Corzilius's tragic death, Alan Golder's burglaries, and the Bible Code's predictions are explored in this episode.

Tonight
00:00:06
on Unsolved Mysteries.
00:00:11
For six-year-old Katherine Corzilius, it
00:00:14
was just a short walk home. But
00:00:16
something terrible happened on the way.
00:00:18
Now, the mystery of Catherine's tragic
00:00:20
death and her past desperate search for
00:00:22
answers has been chronicled in a song by
00:00:25
family friend and rock artist John
00:00:27
Banji. His
00:00:30
life of crime began when he was just 6
00:00:32
years old. Now he's considered the best
00:00:35
cat burglar in America, and he has
00:00:37
relieved his wealthy victims of $30
00:00:39
million.
00:00:40
Beware of the dinnertime bandit,
00:00:45
the Gulf War, the Oklahoma City bombing,
00:00:48
the earthquake in Kobe, Japan. According
00:00:51
to the best-selling book, The Bible
00:00:53
Code, these events and many others were
00:00:55
predicted nearly 3,000 years ago.
00:00:58
Does the ancient text of the Bible
00:01:00
contain a secret code that charts the
00:01:02
history of mankind?
00:01:06
You'll meet a young mother who says she
00:01:07
needs your help. Several years ago, her
00:01:10
5-month-old baby vanished. Now, police
00:01:13
believe it was foul play and she may be
00:01:16
the key suspect.
00:01:17
When the police sit across from you and
00:01:19
say, "We believe you know where your
00:01:21
daughter is and we believe you know who
00:01:22
has her," there's a good reason to get
00:01:25
an attorney.
00:01:27
Join me for these intriguing stories and
00:01:30
more. Perhaps you may be able to help
00:01:33
solve the mystery.

00:02:22
Even though she was just 6 years old,
00:02:24
Katherine Croilia seemed to be leading a
00:02:26
charmed life.
00:02:28
She lived in an upscale neighborhood
00:02:30
outside Austin, Texas with her parents
00:02:32
Nancy and Paul and her brother Chris.
00:02:36
Her father was a personal manager for
00:02:38
rockstar John Bonjovi.
00:02:41
The two families were close and often
00:02:43
vacation together.
00:02:46
When Catherine had her first piano
00:02:48
recital in December of 1995,
00:02:51
no one could have imagined that she
00:02:52
would never live to see the first grade
00:02:55
and that her death would become a tragic
00:02:57
unsolved mystery memorialized by her
00:03:00
father's old friend John Bonjodi.

00:03:12
Tell me it was just a dream. August 7,
00:03:14
4:15.
00:03:16
That's when Nancy and Paul Croilius's
00:03:19
world came crashing down.
00:03:26
August 7th, 1996 was Paul Corilius's
00:03:29
birthday. He was working at his office
00:03:31
in New York City. Nancy and the kids had
00:03:34
spent the day running errands around
00:03:36
Austin, picking out a gift for him.
00:03:39
You know, I think dad's really going to
00:03:41
like his present.
00:03:42
I think he will, too. Hey, Chris.
00:03:45
Catherine, settle down.
00:03:46
We had been very busy as usual, making
00:03:48
doing some shopping and taking in some
00:03:51
uh lunch and some appointments. It was
00:03:53
extremely hot.
00:03:56
It uh was very quiet here in our
00:03:59
neighborhood as it usually is. In fact,
00:04:01
I I can remark that it it was
00:04:03
exceptionally quiet that day.
00:04:06
On the way home, they stopped at the
00:04:08
community mailbox to pick up the mail.
00:04:10
It was a ritual Catherine looked forward
00:04:12
to.
00:04:17
Nancy knew what would happen next.
00:04:19
Mommy, may I walk home?
00:04:21
Sure. I'll see you when you get there.
00:04:22
Okay.
00:04:23
It was Catherine's way of saying she was
00:04:25
a big girl.
00:04:27
I allowed Catherine to do that because I
00:04:30
knew she was ready to be more
00:04:31
independent and she had done it before.
00:04:34
Nancy and Chris drove home in the
00:04:36
direction the car was already facing.
00:04:39
Catherine went in the opposite
00:04:40
direction, the shorter way home.
00:04:45
The Corselius family lives here on Elder
00:04:47
Circle. The community mailboxes are
00:04:50
located here. Nancy and Chris drove home
00:04:53
in this direction. Catherine apparently
00:04:56
followed this route.
00:04:58
Both of my children had walked home
00:05:00
together and separately from the
00:05:02
mailboxes.
00:05:04
It's a short walk, probably
00:05:08
less than a quarter of a mile.
00:05:12
When Chris and I got home, we unloaded
00:05:14
our car and started putting our packages
00:05:17
away.
00:05:17
Mom,
00:05:18
what?
00:05:18
Catherine's not back.
00:05:20
She probably just stopped somewhere
00:05:21
along the way. Go back up on the road
00:05:23
and see if you can find her.
00:05:24
All right.
00:05:27
He came back in just a very short period
00:05:29
of time, a few minutes, and he was
00:05:31
crying and he said, "She's not there,
00:05:33
Mom." We got in the car and drove right
00:05:36
next door to our neighbors. I ran down
00:05:38
the steps to their front door, knocked
00:05:40
on the door. Their son answered.
00:05:43
[Applause]
00:05:44
Hi. Is Katherine here?
00:05:46
No, ma'am. She hasn't been by here at
00:05:48
all.
00:05:49
I believe uh at that moment, Chris and I
00:05:52
knew that something terrible had
00:05:54
happened.
00:05:57
Nancy would find out how terrible just
00:06:00
minutes later.
00:06:14
I could tell that she was unconscious,
00:06:17
but she was breathing. And I knew it was
00:06:19
too hot to leave her on the pavement.
00:06:24
I know that it's never a good idea to
00:06:26
move somebody if you don't know what
00:06:28
their injuries are, but I just couldn't
00:06:30
leave her there. And I think having
00:06:32
driven her to the emergency before,
00:06:35
knowing the way very well, I felt
00:06:37
confident that I was able to to drive
00:06:39
that drive.
00:06:42
Katherine Corilius had suffered a
00:06:44
fractured skull. She never regained
00:06:46
consciousness.
00:06:49
Catherine was on a ventilator to keep
00:06:52
her breathing, but she was brain dead.
00:06:55
It wasn't a matter of her being in a
00:06:57
coma or being unconscious.
00:06:59
Uh, her brain had died.
00:07:02
I arranged for a charter aircraft so I
00:07:05
could come directly home, but in the end
00:07:07
it was too late anyway. I arrived at
00:07:09
12:30 in the morning and I believe she
00:07:12
was pronounced dead at 11:30 that night,
00:07:15
the hour before my arrival.
00:07:20
From the start, everyone assumed that
00:07:22
Katherine Cosilius was a victim of a hit
00:07:24
and run. But even as a police searched
00:07:26
for a driver, a disturbing question
00:07:28
surfaced. How did Catherine end up in
00:07:31
the spot where she was found?
00:07:34
Catherine was last seen headed in this
00:07:36
direction. Less than 10 minutes later,
00:07:39
she was found here on the opposite side
00:07:41
of the circle half a mile away.
00:07:45
The extent of her injuries were such
00:07:47
that she didn't take a step after she
00:07:49
received the injury and the point that
00:07:52
her body was found on Elder Circle is
00:07:54
not on the path that she walked from the
00:07:56
mailbox to the house.
00:07:59
No one could explain it and the medical
00:08:02
examiner's report would only deepen the
00:08:04
mystery. He determined that Katherine
00:08:06
had not died from a hitand-run accident.
00:08:10
In addition to the head injury, he found
00:08:12
abrasions on Catherine's left shoulder,
00:08:15
the small of her back, on her right hip,
00:08:18
and on both knees. What could have
00:08:20
caused them?
00:08:22
The injuries that Katherine sustained
00:08:24
could have been the result of either uh
00:08:26
jumping from a moving vehicle, uh being
00:08:29
thrown from a moving vehicle or falling
00:08:32
from a moving vehicle. The type of
00:08:34
injuries that we expect expect in these
00:08:36
circumstances would have been the same.
00:08:41
If Catherine did tumble from a moving
00:08:43
vehicle, whose vehicle was it? And was
00:08:45
she pushed or did she fall?
00:08:50
One of the theories that investigators
00:08:51
proposed was that indeed somehow
00:08:54
Catherine had jumped on the back of our
00:08:56
vehicle without NY's knowledge. And uh
00:09:00
as the vehicle drove around Elder
00:09:02
Circle, she had fallen off, which was uh
00:09:04
a way to explain where she was found in
00:09:06
Elder Circle, which is completely
00:09:08
opposite of where she would have been on
00:09:10
her normal route.
00:09:14
The Corilius family was stunned. Was it
00:09:17
possible that Nancy was responsible for
00:09:19
her daughter's death?
00:09:20
The Corilius has hired their own private
00:09:23
investigator, Barbara O'Brien.
00:09:25
She has difficulty with a police
00:09:27
scenario.
00:09:28
Now, the problem with that is it's a hot
00:09:31
August day. This whole car would have
00:09:33
been very, very hot. There's only one
00:09:35
place to hold on to all the way up here.
00:09:38
And the door is the only other place
00:09:41
down here to hold on to, and it opens
00:09:44
when you get a hold of it. She also had
00:09:47
a broken left thumb, and she had a
00:09:50
splint on her thumb. So, it would have
00:09:52
been extremely difficult for her to get
00:09:54
a hold on anything. and her mother would
00:09:57
have seen her in the rearview mirror.
00:10:01
For the Croilius family, the implication
00:10:04
is clear. They believe their daughter
00:10:06
was abducted and murdered.
00:10:09
A search of a vacant overgrown lot just
00:10:12
30 yards from the mailboxes may have
00:10:14
provided a crucial clue.
00:10:17
A few days after Katherine's uh death,
00:10:21
the investigators did bring in the K-9
00:10:24
unit and search the area. They did pick
00:10:27
up her scent over in this vacant lot,
00:10:31
which would indicate that she was coming
00:10:33
in this direction from the mailboxes,
00:10:36
taking the most direct route home. The
00:10:38
scent was lost, however, which tells us
00:10:41
that this may have been the point where
00:10:43
she was abducted or the injury took
00:10:46
place, but she was then later moved
00:10:48
where she was found by her mother.
00:10:52
She looked like she'd been laid out
00:10:53
there for me to find. Her hair was
00:10:57
smoothed down, her shirt was straight,
00:11:00
her shorts were straight, her toes were
00:11:03
pointed straight, her sandals were on. I
00:11:05
know someone moved her and I know
00:11:08
someone laid her there for me to find.
00:11:12
What did happen to Katherine Corsilius
00:11:14
at August afternoon? A year after her
00:11:17
death, Catherine lives on in memories.
00:11:20
Her neighbors on Elder Circle have
00:11:22
planted a tree and placed a plaque in
00:11:24
her name.
00:11:26
Oh no.
00:11:28
Oh no.
00:11:34
Tell me it was just a dream.
00:11:37
August 7,5
00:11:41
[Music]
00:11:49
I think if Paul and Nancy's parents knew
00:11:53
how it happened, perhaps it could help
00:11:56
them with the closure of this tragic
00:11:58
event. Nothing that anyone can say or do
00:12:02
is ever going to bring their daughter
00:12:03
back to them. But it's twice as hard not
00:12:07
knowing what happened.
00:12:11
I think of uh families of people who are
00:12:13
missing an action. Well, they're not
00:12:16
here, but what happened to them? And
00:12:19
that's exactly to a certain extent how I
00:12:21
feel about our daughter. I had
00:12:23
Catherine's body, but something happened
00:12:25
in the last 15 minutes of her life that
00:12:28
I I don't know what that was.
00:12:37
He's charming and attractive and maybe
00:12:39
out to steal your jewels. Have you seen
00:12:42
Alan Golder?
00:12:45
[Music]
00:12:50
He looks like just another tourist. He
00:12:52
rides tour buses to see the homes of the
00:12:54
rich and famous. He admires the finer
00:12:56
things in life, especially if they
00:12:59
belong to someone else. His name is Alan
00:13:01
Golder, and his prior profession was
00:13:04
jewel thief.
00:13:06
Police believe he's at it again. During
00:13:09
the daytime, he cases fashionable
00:13:11
neighborhoods, so at night he can find
00:13:13
the perfect moment to strike. While he's
00:13:16
upstairs, the owners of the home are
00:13:19
downstairs having dinner. Allan is very
00:13:21
good at what he does. He gets a thrill
00:13:23
out of what he does. He has no other
00:13:26
goal in life other than to be the best
00:13:28
jewel thief that he can be.
00:13:32
42year-old Alan Golder was arguably the
00:13:34
best cat burglar in the United States.
00:13:37
From 1976 to 1980, Golder made millions
00:13:40
stealing jewelry. He was caught and
00:13:42
served 15 years in prison. But since his
00:13:45
release in 1996, Golder may have
00:13:47
reclaimed his title as a dinnertime
00:13:49
bandit. Police are seeking your help to
00:13:52
catch a thief.
00:13:56
Golder's life of crime began early at
00:13:59
the age of six. He grew up poor in Long
00:14:02
Island, New York.
00:14:06
His father, a career criminal, had
00:14:08
abandoned the family when Allan was
00:14:10
three.
00:14:14
At 16, Golder dropped out of high
00:14:16
school. Even at that young age, he was
00:14:20
earning anywhere from a few hundred to
00:14:21
several thousand dollar a night by
00:14:24
stealing.
00:14:28
At 21, Alan Golder had found his niche,
00:14:32
burglarizing the homes of wealthy people
00:14:34
in Greenwich, Connecticut.
00:14:36
He thinks he is today's answer to the
00:14:39
Pink Panther. He's in it for the thrill
00:14:42
that he gets out of it. As I think about
00:14:44
things now, in some ways, I'm amazed
00:14:46
that Allan hasn't come forward just
00:14:48
because he's missing all these wonderful
00:14:49
opportunities to be interviewed by
00:14:50
different TV shows. Between 1976 and
00:14:54
1980, Alan Golder has some very good
00:14:57
years.
00:15:00
It's estimated that he stole at least
00:15:02
$25 million worth of jewels and gems
00:15:05
from the richest people in America.
00:15:08
When you think about the crimes that he
00:15:10
committed, the ordinary person would
00:15:12
have said, "Well, with as much money as
00:15:14
he's gotten, why didn't he stop?" It was
00:15:17
like an art for him. And in another way,
00:15:20
it was almost compulsive for him, as if
00:15:23
he's suffering from some sort of
00:15:24
compulsive disorder.
00:15:28
Golder's reputation caught the attention
00:15:30
of the mob. It happened when he tried to
00:15:33
fence some stolen jewelry at a shop in
00:15:35
New York.
00:15:37
What it turns out is that this
00:15:38
particular jewel store was a front for
00:15:40
the Genevvisi family's uh international
00:15:43
jewel fencing operation. So
00:15:46
being 19 years old or whatever he was at
00:15:48
the time, he didn't really know what he
00:15:50
was getting into at that point. He was
00:15:51
just trying to sell some jewels. But
00:15:53
what he did was he was in in fact
00:15:55
getting in bed with the mafia.
00:15:57
The mob liked Golder's ambition and took
00:15:59
him under their wing.
00:16:03
They wanted to change him into an
00:16:04
international jewel thief.
00:16:08
He would go meet them in New York and he
00:16:09
would hang out with them and they would
00:16:10
take him out to restaurants. It was sort
00:16:12
of a pyon thing that went on. I mean,
00:16:14
they sort of groomed him for the
00:16:16
business. You have to look for the three
00:16:18
C's in a diamond. The color, the cut,
00:16:20
and the clarity. Don't pick me up
00:16:22
diamonds from from a box on top of the
00:16:24
dresser. These are never good. Nobody
00:16:27
keeps expensive diamonds on top of the
00:16:29
dresser.
00:16:29
Very closely.
00:16:30
But it was his relationship with the
00:16:31
mafia that would lead to Golders's
00:16:33
downfall.
00:16:36
In 1978, Golder was being pressured to
00:16:39
bring in more jewelry.
00:16:42
He and two other mafia jewel thieves
00:16:44
were instructed to hit a home in the
00:16:46
Hamptons.
00:16:49
It's believed that Golder never carried
00:16:51
a weapon, but one of his accompllices
00:16:54
did.
00:16:56
Allan claims he never even saw the guy.
00:16:58
that happened in another room, another
00:16:59
part of the house. And they didn't know
00:17:01
if they had killed him or not, but they
00:17:03
found out the next day that the man
00:17:04
died.
00:17:07
Alan Golder's life spun out of control.
00:17:10
He was doing drugs and going through
00:17:12
money like water.
00:17:15
Eventually, he was caught.
00:17:18
Facing a murder charge, he looked for a
00:17:20
way to reduce his sentence.
00:17:22
Now, you know that we got you at the
00:17:24
lever estate two times previous that we
00:17:26
know of. Now, I need you to tell me
00:17:28
specific names and specific numbers
00:17:31
right there on that piece of paper. All
00:17:32
right.
00:17:35
In exchange for selling out the mob,
00:17:38
Golder was given a sentence of 15 years
00:17:40
to life.
00:17:41
You can assume that there was a contract
00:17:43
out on his life. He became a an official
00:17:45
protective witness. And when he was in
00:17:46
the entire time he was in prison, he
00:17:48
was, you know, basically in protective
00:17:50
custody in prison. He did wasn't housed
00:17:52
with the regular inmates. He was housed
00:17:54
with guys that were special cases that
00:17:56
they had to watch out for so that he
00:17:57
wouldn't be killed.
00:17:59
But according to authorities, while in
00:18:01
prison, Golder continued to sip through
00:18:03
magazines profiling the homes of the
00:18:05
wealthy.
00:18:08
Following his parole in 1996, he tried
00:18:10
to go straight, or so he said. He even
00:18:14
had a job in mind, working as a chimney
00:18:17
sweep. I explained to him there are
00:18:20
certain employment positions that you
00:18:23
because of your conviction and your
00:18:25
criminal history you cannot work and
00:18:29
entering into people's homes to clean
00:18:31
chimneys is one of them. Then after that
00:18:34
he had considered pursuing school. We
00:18:37
had talked at length as to what sort of
00:18:40
careers he could choose but he was sort
00:18:42
of set on going to a gemology school. He
00:18:46
wanted to study gems.
00:18:49
Not long after, police had another rash
00:18:51
of high-profile burglaries on their
00:18:53
hands. But Alan Golder was not a suspect
00:18:56
at the time.
00:18:58
But in October 1997 in Greenwich,
00:19:00
Connecticut, police believe Golder
00:19:03
pushed his luck a bit too far.
00:19:10
[Music]
00:19:11
Oh my god.
00:19:14
talk about.
00:19:17
He allegedly was forced to tie up a
00:19:19
homeowner and fled in her car.
00:19:23
[Music]
00:19:24
Now, police believe the dinnertime
00:19:26
bandit was back in business. Alan Golder
00:19:29
apparently went underground.
00:19:35
We can confirm that in Greenwich, um, in
00:19:38
23 incidents of burglary, attempted
00:19:40
burglaries, Allen succeeded in removing
00:19:42
over $750,000 worth of jewelry from the
00:19:45
houses that he hid here. In his career,
00:19:48
Golder has stolen more than $30 million
00:19:50
worth of jewelry, and police believe he
00:19:53
has no intention of stopping.
00:19:56
Alan Golder is wanted on 23 counts of
00:19:58
burglary and one count of kidnapping.
00:20:10
[Music]
00:20:17
coming up. Some say there are codes in
00:20:20
the Bible that predict major world
00:20:21
events. You decide if it's true.
00:20:26
[Music]
00:20:31
The Bible. For centuries, mankind has
00:20:34
pondered its mysteries. For many, it's
00:20:36
the word of God. But journalist Michael
00:20:39
Drazen is convinced that the Bible may
00:20:41
hold still other mysteries. His
00:20:43
controversial book, The Bible Code, hit
00:20:45
the bestseller list soon after its
00:20:47
publication in early 1997.
00:20:50
Drazzen claimed that there is a secret
00:20:52
code within the Bible. a code that has
00:20:54
predicted the most important events of
00:20:56
the 20th century. Here are some
00:20:58
examples.
00:21:02
The greatest terrorist event in American
00:21:04
history, the Oklahoma City bombing was
00:21:07
encoded with the world's terrible,
00:21:08
frightening death, and there will be
00:21:10
terror.
00:21:13
The great Coobe earthquake in Japan that
00:21:15
killed more than 5,000 people was
00:21:18
encoded with the words earthquake fire,
00:21:21
Coobe, Japan, and the year that it took
00:21:23
place, 1995.
00:21:28
The Gulf War is encoded with the words
00:21:32
Hussein, enemy, scuds.
00:21:38
Ever since there was a Bible, people
00:21:41
have been searching for secret hidden
00:21:43
messages in the Bible. I can tell you
00:21:48
that there is no doubt that the Bible
00:21:50
code does exist and that it does detail
00:21:52
events that took place thousands of
00:21:55
years after the Bible was written.
00:22:05
In September of 1994, Michael Dzn
00:22:09
persuaded an intermediary to hand a
00:22:11
letter to Israeli Prime Minister Yitsak
00:22:13
Rabbine.
00:22:15
Mr. Prime Minister, an Israeli
00:22:18
mathematician has discovered a hidden
00:22:20
code in the Bible. The only time your
00:22:22
full name, Yak Rabin, is encoded in the
00:22:26
Bible, the words assassin that will
00:22:29
assassinate cross your name. That should
00:22:33
not be ignored. I think you are in real
00:22:36
danger, but that the danger can be
00:22:38
averted.
00:22:50
14 months later, Prime Minister Yitsak
00:22:53
Rabin spoke at a peace rally in Tel
00:22:55
Aviv.
00:22:58
It was the last speech Rabbine would
00:23:00
ever give. As he left the podium that
00:23:03
night, he was gunned down by an
00:23:04
assassin.
00:23:06
Is it possible that this event was
00:23:08
foretold nearly 3,000 years ago?
00:23:14
The Torah. It is said to be the word of
00:23:17
God brought down from Mount Si by Moses
00:23:20
and incorporating the first five books
00:23:22
of the Old Testament. Hebrew scholars
00:23:25
maintain that the Torah predates the
00:23:27
birth of Christ.
00:23:28
[Music]
00:23:30
Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1938.
00:23:34
Rabbi HMD Viceman discovered the first
00:23:37
known example of Bible coding in the
00:23:39
modern era.
00:23:41
The word Torah was spelled out when he
00:23:43
skipped every 50 letters in the book of
00:23:45
Genesis.
00:23:48
Skipping the same number of letters in
00:23:49
the books of Exodus, Numbers, and
00:23:51
Deuteronomy brought the same result.
00:23:54
Coincidence? The odds were against it.
00:23:59
[Music]
00:24:00
Over the next 50 years, advances in
00:24:03
computer technology led to the next
00:24:05
major breakthrough in cracking the Bible
00:24:07
code.
00:24:08
Israeli scientists Doron Witdom and Eli
00:24:11
Yahu Rips became intrigued by Vice
00:24:13
Mandal's work. They used a computer
00:24:16
program called a skip code to find words
00:24:19
and patterns in the Hebrew text of the
00:24:21
Torah. A skip code tells a computer to
00:24:24
start with any letter of a text and then
00:24:26
skip through the letters at chosen
00:24:28
intervals. In his book, Michael Drosen
00:24:31
uses this example to show how it works.
00:24:34
If you skip every three letters of this
00:24:36
sentence, it would look like this. You
00:24:39
are left with a new sentence. In this
00:24:41
case, the encoded message is read the
00:24:44
code.
00:24:46
The Israeli mathematicians ran a skip
00:24:48
code searching for the names of 34
00:24:50
prominent Jewish rabbis spanning the
00:24:52
last 1100 years. Amazingly, all the
00:24:56
names were found embedded in the book of
00:24:58
Genesis. When the computer found the
00:25:01
encoded names of the rabbis, it also
00:25:03
found nearby their Hebrew dates of birth
00:25:06
or death.
00:25:07
The scientists ran the search again with
00:25:09
a new list of rabbis. The results were
00:25:12
the same. According to Michael Drazn,
00:25:15
the odds of finding the dates with the
00:25:17
names were 10 million to one.
00:25:22
When these findings were published, they
00:25:23
aroused the attention of researchers
00:25:25
around the world, including Harold Gans.
00:25:28
Gans is a former senior cryptologic
00:25:30
mathematician, a codereaker at the US
00:25:33
Department of Defense.
00:25:35
Uh, when I first heard about it, I
00:25:37
dismissed it as simply ridiculous.
00:25:40
Gans wrote his own computer program to
00:25:43
test the validity of the code and had
00:25:45
identical results. Then in close
00:25:47
proximity to the rabbis, one of whom was
00:25:50
a distant relative, he found the encoded
00:25:52
names of cities.
00:25:55
He later learned that these were the
00:25:56
same cities where the rabbis had either
00:25:58
been born or died. The odds here were
00:26:01
more than a million to one.
00:26:04
I set out to prove that it was nonsense.
00:26:07
Instead, I ended up proving that in fact
00:26:08
it was true. I must admit, I felt a
00:26:10
chill go up my spine when I when I saw
00:26:12
it corroborated.
00:26:15
Journalist Michael Drosen took the
00:26:17
research a step further. Using the
00:26:19
existing skip code programs, he searched
00:26:22
for the names of historical figures. The
00:26:24
results were tantalizing, but not
00:26:26
entirely convincing at first.
00:26:31
I did not fully believe the Bible code
00:26:34
was real until the day that Yakraine
00:26:38
was assassinated.
00:26:41
The one time his name appeared in the
00:26:44
Bible, the words assassin will
00:26:46
assassinate ran right across his name.
00:26:51
Drosen embarked on his own ambitious
00:26:53
research into the mysteries of the Bible
00:26:55
code. He now included a wide range of
00:26:58
history's most important personalities
00:27:00
and pivotal events. If Dzen is correct,
00:27:04
everything that follows was predicted
00:27:06
nearly 3,000 years ago.
00:27:09
According to Drosen, Adolf Hitler is
00:27:12
encoded with the words Nazi and enemy,
00:27:15
evil man, and slaughter.
00:27:20
Pearl Harbor is encoded with the words
00:27:22
destruction of the fortress,
00:27:24
World War, and December 7th.
00:27:28
According to Drosdn, Watergate is
00:27:30
encoded with Nixon. And who is he?
00:27:34
President, but he was kicked out.
00:27:37
In the case of the Oklahoma City
00:27:39
bombing, Drozen claims a code is
00:27:41
surprisingly accurate. He says it
00:27:43
includes the name of the building that
00:27:45
was blown up, the Mura building.
00:27:48
the date and time of the attack
00:27:50
and even the name of the man convicted
00:27:52
of the crime, Timothy McVey.
00:27:56
But not everything in the code is gloom
00:27:58
and doom. Drosna notes that Shakespeare
00:28:01
is encoded with McBth and Hamlet.
00:28:05
The Wright brothers are encoded with
00:28:06
airplane
00:28:09
and the phrase man on the moon appears
00:28:11
with spaceship and Apollo 11.
00:28:15
But there are those who questioned
00:28:17
Rosn's claims.
00:28:19
Humans are pattern-seeking animals. We
00:28:22
look for cause and effect relationships
00:28:25
in our environment, meaningful ones.
00:28:28
Michael Shurmer is a publisher of
00:28:29
Skeptic magazine. He believes a Bible
00:28:32
code is an example of self-fulfilling
00:28:35
prophecy.
00:28:36
The Bible code is nothing more than a
00:28:39
form of seek and you shall find. Whether
00:28:41
you're using the Bible or the
00:28:42
dictionary, the yellow pages, some other
00:28:45
novels. All you need is a long string of
00:28:48
uh letters and then you can run your
00:28:50
computer skip code sequence program and
00:28:53
come up with all kinds of things.
00:28:55
Michael Drazen disagrees. He says he ran
00:28:58
the skip code program on several books,
00:29:00
including Toltoy's epic novel War in
00:29:03
Peace. He claims he found nothing of
00:29:05
significance.
00:29:07
Drosen is convinced that the secret code
00:29:09
is exclusive to the Bible.
00:29:12
Every major figure in world history I
00:29:14
have looked for, every major event in
00:29:17
world history I have looked for has been
00:29:20
encoded accurately in remarkable detail
00:29:24
in the Bible.
00:29:26
To date, Drosen says he has uncovered
00:29:28
hundreds of encoded references to
00:29:30
historical persons and events.
00:29:33
What then are we to make of the dire
00:29:35
predictions he believes a Bible code
00:29:37
makes for our future?
00:29:40
The most terrible warning that's encoded
00:29:43
in the Bible is of a possible nuclear
00:29:47
world war within the next 10 years.
00:29:51
The words world war and atomic holocaust
00:29:55
are both encoded in the Bible with the
00:29:58
same two years, the years 2000 and 2006.
00:30:04
I'm not calling that a prediction,
00:30:07
but a warning. That's what I think the
00:30:10
Bible code really is, a series of
00:30:13
warnings of dangers we can prevent
00:30:17
if we take the warnings seriously. Well,
00:30:20
now wait a minute. You can't prophesize
00:30:23
the end will come, the end might not
00:30:25
come, the end might be delayed, or the
00:30:27
end might not come at all. You've now
00:30:29
made all possible predictions, which is
00:30:31
no prediction at all. That's not
00:30:32
prophecy.
00:30:34
The Bible code, as far as I'm concerned,
00:30:37
does not predict anything. It warns us
00:30:41
of possible dangers. It doesn't give us
00:30:44
one predetermined future, but all of our
00:30:47
possible futures.
00:30:50
Mr. Drosdn is a journalist. He is
00:30:52
reporting on a very complex mathematical
00:30:55
work of world-renowned mathematicians.
00:30:58
He has not used scientific methodology
00:31:00
and his actual conclusions are logically
00:31:03
unound.
00:31:05
It is far better in my mind to sound a
00:31:09
false warning than to fail to warn of a
00:31:13
real danger.
00:31:16
People sometimes say to me, "Where's the
00:31:18
good news in the Bible code? Why all
00:31:21
these predictions of terrible
00:31:23
catastrophes?"
00:31:25
And I say, "The good news is that some
00:31:29
intelligence cared enough about us to
00:31:33
encode the Bible and leave us these
00:31:36
warnings so that these dangers could in
00:31:39
fact be prevented.
00:31:47
Teenagers may run away. Toddlers may
00:31:49
wander off. But if a baby disappears,
00:31:52
more often than not, foul play is
00:31:54
involved.
00:31:55
A couple in a suburb of Tampa, Florida,
00:31:57
claims someone took their baby,
00:31:59
kidnapped her in the dead of night. Only
00:32:02
one thing is certain. The baby is
00:32:05
missing.
00:32:07
November 24th, 1997.
00:32:10
Marlene Eisenberg says she got up
00:32:11
shortly after 6:00 that morning and went
00:32:13
into the kitchen.
00:32:15
And I noticed the laundry room door to
00:32:18
the garage is opened and I'm like, "Wow,
00:32:22
what's that doing open?" And I just run
00:32:25
to the first bedroom and I look in
00:32:28
Sabrina's crib and she was gone. And I
00:32:31
was just like, you know, I was
00:32:32
hysterical. Steve, you know, Sabrina's
00:32:34
missing. Sabrina's gone.
00:32:37
Sabrina, Steve and Marlene Eisenberg's
00:32:39
third child, barely 5 months old, had
00:32:42
vanished, taken from her own crib.
00:32:46
The Eisenberg's home was now a crime
00:32:49
scene.
00:32:50
This frightened a lot of people,
00:32:53
terrified a lot of young parents. It was
00:32:55
chilling for people who lived in that
00:32:56
community. It was a quiet, safe, out of
00:33:00
the way place. And then a baby
00:33:02
disappears.
00:33:06
How could a baby just disappear? The
00:33:08
Eisenbergs had left their garage door
00:33:10
open overnight. The interior door may
00:33:13
also have been left unlocked, but there
00:33:16
were no clues about an intruder.
00:33:18
Who took baby Sabrina?
00:33:21
Got some debris down here. Let's go
00:33:22
ahead.
00:33:23
Marlene Eisenberg says the investigation
00:33:25
suddenly took an unexpected turn. She
00:33:28
and her husband became prime suspects.
00:33:32
No forced entry, no ransom note. We
00:33:35
think you had something to do with the
00:33:37
disappearance of Sabrina.
00:33:40
Why don't you just tell us where Sabrina
00:33:42
is?
00:33:43
To me, it was the most unbelievable
00:33:45
thing I could have ever heard. And you
00:33:47
know, I was like, I have no idea where
00:33:49
Sabrina is. I have no idea who took her.
00:33:52
That's why you're here. Help. You know,
00:33:55
find her.
00:33:58
Deputies removed a number of items from
00:34:00
the Eisenberg home, including Sabrina's
00:34:02
crib and bedding. They were sent to the
00:34:05
FBI lab at Quantico for analysis.
00:34:09
As a search for baby Sabrina continued,
00:34:12
the Eisenbergs taped a public appeal
00:34:14
pleading for her return.
00:34:17
This morning, someone came into our home
00:34:20
and took our baby Sabrina Page out of
00:34:23
her crib. The plea might have inspired
00:34:25
sympathy for the Eisenbergs. It did not.
00:34:29
Some people felt they were guilty of
00:34:30
something. Some people felt that they
00:34:32
were involved in some way in Sabrina's
00:34:35
disappearance.
00:34:37
The day after Sabrina vanished, the
00:34:39
media taped the Eisenberg smiling as
00:34:41
they left their home. Public opinion
00:34:44
counted it as another strike against
00:34:46
them.
00:34:48
A lot of people in the community saw
00:34:50
that clip and saw Steve smile and they
00:34:52
saw Marlene with a quick flash of a
00:34:55
smile and they jumped to conclusions.
00:34:57
They said, "Why would these people be
00:34:58
smiling? There must be something wrong
00:35:01
here."
00:35:02
Are you withholding any information?
00:35:03
The Eisenbergs voluntarily took a
00:35:05
polygraph test.
00:35:08
Did you help take your daughter from
00:35:09
your home that night?
00:35:10
No.
00:35:11
Do you have any knowledge of your
00:35:13
daughter's current location?
00:35:14
No. In Marlene's case, the results are a
00:35:17
matter of debate.
00:35:18
Did you help?
00:35:19
They told me it was inconclusive and
00:35:20
they told me that they expected it to be
00:35:22
that because I was hysterical and you
00:35:26
know everything and uh my baby's gone
00:35:29
and you know they would expect that.
00:35:32
Are you lying about your daughter's
00:35:33
disappearance?
00:35:34
The sheriff's office insists Marlene
00:35:36
Eisenberg's polygraph results were not
00:35:38
inconclusive,
00:35:40
but officials won't say whether she
00:35:42
passed or failed.
00:35:45
No,
00:35:46
I don't give a damn about the Hillberg
00:35:48
County Polygraph.
00:35:50
Shortly after Sabrina disappeared, the
00:35:52
Eisenbergs hired an attorney. To some,
00:35:55
it was another sign of their guilt. The
00:35:57
Eisenbergs say the police left them no
00:36:00
choice.
00:36:01
When the police sit across from you and
00:36:03
say, "We believe you know where your
00:36:05
daughter is and we believe you know who
00:36:06
has her." There's a good reason to get
00:36:09
an attorney.
00:36:12
Months passed and still no trace of the
00:36:15
baby.
00:36:16
The police held several press
00:36:18
conferences fairly early on in the case
00:36:21
and told the reporters that in fact they
00:36:23
had evidence and that we should just
00:36:25
hang on, that they were processing the
00:36:27
evidence and that it would be
00:36:28
forthcoming. Uh that was almost a year
00:36:32
ago and I've not seen any of that
00:36:34
evidence to date.
00:36:36
The police declined to comment on any
00:36:38
evidence in this case, including the
00:36:40
results of tests done in the FBI lab at
00:36:43
Quantico.
00:36:44
Unfortunately, most of the leads bring
00:36:46
us back to a dead end and that comes
00:36:49
brings us back to this community and we
00:36:51
feel that the answers to this crime are
00:36:53
within this community.
00:36:55
Our policy has always been that we don't
00:36:58
list people as a suspect unless we have
00:37:00
enough to charge them. We have not ruled
00:37:02
the Eisenbergs out. they um have failed
00:37:06
to assist us in some ways and it makes
00:37:08
it more difficult to rule them out as a
00:37:12
um having some involvement in the case.
00:37:16
The Eisenbergs continue to maintain
00:37:18
Sabrina was kidnapped.
00:37:22
I believe that somebody came into our
00:37:24
home and just took her. It had to be
00:37:27
someone who wanted a baby so bad and
00:37:30
they couldn't have one themselves or
00:37:32
they needed money so bad that they would
00:37:34
want to sell her.
00:37:36
It could be that somebody just watched
00:37:38
Marlene and I and and saw our habits of
00:37:41
occasionally leaving the garage open,
00:37:42
knew we had a baby, or it could have
00:37:45
been somebody that knew us casually
00:37:49
and then through others knew our our
00:37:52
habits. So it, you know, anything is
00:37:55
just pure speculation.
00:37:59
Update. In September of 1999, a federal
00:38:03
grand jury indicted Marlene and Steven
00:38:05
Eisenberg on charges of conspiracy and
00:38:08
lying to investigators about the
00:38:09
disappearance of Sabrina.
00:38:12
Two years later, a judge threw the
00:38:14
indictment out by lambasting prosecutors
00:38:16
for misrepresenting the strength of
00:38:18
their case. The US attorney has agreed
00:38:21
to reimburse the Eisenbergs for the cost
00:38:23
of their legal counsel.

00:38:42
31-year-old Lee Carter Jr. was a kind of
00:38:45
guy who always tried to do the right
00:38:47
thing. But on the morning of July 28th,
00:38:50
1993,
00:38:55
it seems doing the right thing got Lee
00:38:58
Carter Jr. killed.
00:39:00
A bomb placed under the seat of his
00:39:02
Porsche, parked outside Carter's home,
00:39:05
ended his life instantly. For members of
00:39:08
Carter's family, the loss has been
00:39:10
unbearable.
00:39:11
There's been no closure of any kind. I
00:39:14
wake up in the morning, he's the first
00:39:16
thing I think about. I go to bed at
00:39:18
night. I'd say most of the time it's the
00:39:19
first thing I'm thinking about, the last
00:39:20
thing I'm thinking about.
00:39:23
Who would want to kill Lee Carter Jr.?
00:39:26
Police in Carter's upstate New York
00:39:27
hometown have a suspect. They would like
00:39:30
your help in finding him. They believe
00:39:32
he is a dangerous killer, a man they
00:39:35
suspect is an enforcer for an outlaw
00:39:37
branch of the Hell's Angels motorcycle
00:39:39
gang. The man's name is Rick Valley. And
00:39:43
if you happen to know him, be careful.
00:39:48
[Music]
00:39:52
In the early 1990s, police believe led
00:39:55
the angels in a battle for control of
00:39:57
drugs and prostitution along the US
00:39:59
Canadian border. Police alleged valley's
00:40:02
job was to kill people who double
00:40:04
crossed the biker gang.
00:40:08
Lee Carter Jr. had been approached by
00:40:10
associates of Rick Valley who wanted to
00:40:12
use his home as a safe house.
00:40:15
It is alleged that Valley and the gang
00:40:17
had plans to smuggle 54 kilos of cocaine
00:40:20
from the United States into Canada.
00:40:23
Carter's home was close to the border.
00:40:25
Disgusted. That's right.
00:40:26
Carter went to the police and agreed to
00:40:29
act as an informant. The drug deal was
00:40:31
quickly thwarted and Rick Valley was
00:40:33
charged with conspiracy to import
00:40:35
cocaine.
00:40:37
My son didn't get into detail on it to
00:40:39
me at all. He did tell me he was working
00:40:41
with the state police. He told me he was
00:40:43
helping him and I started to ask him
00:40:47
what it was about and he said it best
00:40:50
that I didn't get involved in it. That
00:40:52
what he was doing was with them and was
00:40:54
on the up and up with the law.
00:40:56
Before the case could go to trial, Lee
00:40:59
Carter Jr., the main witness, was
00:41:01
eliminated.
00:41:03
Police believe Rick Valley, a known
00:41:05
demolition's expert, planted the bomb
00:41:07
that killed him.
00:41:09
Rick Valley obviously made the decision
00:41:12
that if he took out the witness, had the
00:41:15
witness killed, then there was nobody to
00:41:17
testify him against court, the drug
00:41:19
charge would have to be dismissed, which
00:41:21
in effect is what happened.
00:41:24
2 days after Carter's murder, with a
00:41:26
star witness against him dead, the drug
00:41:29
charges against Rick Valley were
00:41:30
dropped.
00:41:33
[Music]
00:41:35
Two years passed. During that time, New
00:41:38
York state and Canadian authorities
00:41:40
gathered enough evidence to charge
00:41:42
Valley with Carter's murder. Valley was
00:41:45
arrested in Canada and was awaiting
00:41:47
extradition to the United States.
00:41:50
While in custody, Rick Valley had his
00:41:52
jaw broken in a jail house fight.
00:41:56
Over the next few weeks, he was treated
00:41:58
at a local hospital where two guards
00:42:00
would always accompany him.
00:42:03
During the course of his visit, he had
00:42:06
uh consistently set up where he would
00:42:08
take a shower around 8:00. Uh at this
00:42:11
particular point, uh he had been on the
00:42:13
phone and indicated to one of the guards
00:42:16
that uh he would like the guard to wait
00:42:20
there because he was waiting for an
00:42:21
important phone call from uh his
00:42:23
attorney. Uh he then went to take a
00:42:25
shower with the other guard.
00:42:28
As the both of them entered the shower
00:42:30
room, uh the one guard was accosted.
00:42:35
What took you out?
00:42:36
With the help of an accomplice, Valley
00:42:38
escaped. It's the last time anyone has
00:42:41
seen Rick Valley.
00:42:43
My gut sense is that he's out of the
00:42:45
country uh and that he's gone someplace
00:42:47
else and has probably established a new
00:42:49
identity. Obviously, we'd love to have
00:42:51
somebody call us and tell us or Rick
00:42:53
Valley is in this house right now having
00:42:55
dinner. Uh, and I can assure you that uh
00:42:58
within moments uh we'd uh we'd be there
00:43:00
and uh get him into custody.
00:43:05
When I think of uh Richard Valley, uh I
00:43:08
think of an individual that thinks
00:43:10
nothing of taking life, thinks nothing
00:43:12
of uh anyone else whatsoever. He is it
00:43:16
and that's all. He has no values.
00:43:19
It would help considerably to know that
00:43:22
at least the individual wasn't out there
00:43:25
living high in the hog while he has
00:43:26
taken someone else's life.

00:44:09
On a previous broadcast, we asked for
00:44:11
your help in finding a ruthless killer
00:44:12
who'd escaped from an Oklahoma prison.
00:44:15
Michael Wayne Brown was able to elude
00:44:17
law enforcement authorities for over 15
00:44:19
years. But thanks to an unsolved
00:44:22
mysteries viewer, Brown is now back
00:44:25
behind bars.
00:44:32
When he was only 18, Michael Wayne Brown
00:44:34
and another teenager were in the middle
00:44:36
of burglarizing an insurance office when
00:44:39
an employee stopped by to pick up a
00:44:41
file.
00:44:41
Give me the gun. Turn around.
00:44:52
Brown was put on death row for murdering
00:44:54
Richard Sullivan. However, that sentence
00:44:57
was later commuted to life without
00:44:59
parole.
00:45:01
Michael Wayne Brown had served nine
00:45:02
years in the Oklahoma state prison
00:45:04
system when his luck began to change. A
00:45:07
lonely widow named Donna Moses began
00:45:09
writing him letters as part of her
00:45:11
church group's attempt to help convicts
00:45:13
find spiritual comfort.
00:45:15
But these pen pals quickly became
00:45:17
something more.
00:45:19
She was lonely. She hadn't had anybody
00:45:21
for a very long time. and she needed
00:45:24
that companionship, you know, someone
00:45:26
someone, you know, to talk to her about
00:45:28
things and show her love and affection.
00:45:31
And that's what she got from him.
00:45:33
Do you, Michael Brown, pick this woman
00:45:34
to be your
00:45:35
less than 3 months after meeting Brown,
00:45:37
Donna Moses married him?
00:45:39
I do.
00:45:40
In November of 1984, Brown was
00:45:43
transferred to a minimum security
00:45:45
prison. It was a perfect opportunity,
00:45:47
and he wasted little time. Michael Wayne
00:45:50
Brown and another inmate jumped a 4-foot
00:45:53
fence and raced for freedom.
00:45:55
Authorities believe that Donna Moses
00:45:57
Brown drove the getaway car. Within a
00:46:00
year, the second convict was captured.
00:46:03
For 15 years, authorities received
00:46:05
numerous tips about the whereabouts of
00:46:07
Michael and Donna Brown. And then
00:46:09
finally, one paid off.
00:46:14
Update. In 1999, an alert unsolved
00:46:18
Mysteries viewer chanced upon a
00:46:19
photograph from our website.
00:46:21
I couldn't believe it. Um, it looked
00:46:24
like him, but my mind said it's not him,
00:46:26
but the picture said it was him.
00:46:28
Greg knew Donna and Michael Brown as
00:46:30
Linda and Kenneth Gter. The Genters
00:46:33
owned a video store in the quiet suburb
00:46:35
of Ketling, Ohio. In fact, Greg's wife
00:46:38
worked at the store.
00:46:41
You'd never know he was a murderer. You
00:46:43
would never know that. Um, like I say,
00:46:45
he was like an icon of the community.
00:46:47
Everybody liked him. The kids would come
00:46:48
in there and high-five him. He'd give
00:46:50
him candy and super nice guy.
00:46:53
Coincidentally, about 15 minutes after
00:46:55
spotting the photos on the Unsolved
00:46:57
Mysteries website, Greg received a phone
00:47:00
call from Kenneth Gter.
00:47:02
The phone rings and it was him and he
00:47:05
was asking my wife to work that night. I
00:47:07
told him that I seen a guy on the
00:47:08
computer that looked like him and I
00:47:10
said, "Michael Wayne Brown." and he kind
00:47:12
of got quiet for a minute and he says,
00:47:13
"Well, Greg, everybody has a twin, so I
00:47:16
left it at that."
00:47:17
Realizing that he had been recognized,
00:47:19
Brown quietly dropped from sight. But
00:47:22
knowing that the FBI was one step behind
00:47:24
him, he turned himself in.
00:47:28
Brown is serving the remainder of his
00:47:30
sentence at the Oklahoma State
00:47:31
Penitentiary in Mallister, Oklahoma.
00:47:34
Authorities view Donna Brown as a hless
00:47:37
victim of her husband. She was never
00:47:39
charged with any wrongdoing in
00:47:41
connection with Brown's escape.
