Forensic Files | Haunting Vision | FULL EPISODE | HD | True Crime Procedure Investigation Drama

October 16, 2025 / 21:46

This episode covers the mysterious disappearance of Diane Kiddell, her daughter's revelation of witnessing her mother's murder, and the subsequent investigation that led to her father's arrest.

Diane Kiddell disappeared on September 17, 1966, after meeting her boyfriend Bob Marlin. Her husband Gene Kiddell reported her missing, claiming she ran off with a man. However, her children believed she would never abandon them.

Four months later, a tragic fire claimed the lives of two of Diane's children, Susie and Kelly, while Lori survived with severe burns. Years later, Lori revealed a dark secret about witnessing her father's violent act against her mother.

In 1993, Lori provided a written statement to the police detailing her father's actions. Detective Ed Reynolds sought evidence to corroborate her claims, leading to the discovery of Diane's remains buried under a concrete patio.

Gene Kiddell was arrested and convicted of murder in 1995, largely based on Lori's testimony. The episode highlights the trauma faced by the surviving family members and the impact of the father's actions.

TL;DR

Lori Kiddell reveals her father's murder of her mother 27 years later, leading to his arrest and conviction.

00:00:06
On September 17th, 1966,
00:00:09
Diane Kiddell met a boyfriend for a
00:00:12
drink at a local nightspot.
00:00:15
After leaving the bar, she disappeared.
00:00:19
Officials weren't sure whether she ran
00:00:21
away from the responsibilities facing a
00:00:23
single mother with four young children
00:00:26
or perhaps had been the victim of foul
00:00:29
play.
00:00:31
That question was answered 27 years
00:00:34
later when her daughter came forward
00:00:36
with a fantastic tale of something she
00:00:39
saw when she was 5 years old.

00:01:09
In 1956,
00:01:11
21-year-old Diane Kiddell went to work
00:01:14
in her father's grocery store in Peoria,
00:01:16
Illinois.
00:01:18
She needed the money since she was
00:01:19
recently divorced and was raising her
00:01:21
2-year-old daughter Susie. And it was in
00:01:24
that store one day where she met a
00:01:27
bachelor from town, Gene Kiddell.
00:01:30
Gene wasn't the best-looking guy in the
00:01:32
world, but he is a good talker. He's a
00:01:34
very good talker and he was able to woo
00:01:37
her. The couple dated for a year, fell
00:01:40
in love, and eventually married.
00:01:43
They moved to Phoenix, Arizona where
00:01:45
Gene found work in the growing
00:01:47
construction industry.
00:01:49
Together, Gene and Diane had three more
00:01:52
children, Greg, Kelly, and Lori.
00:01:57
My siblings and I were really close,
00:01:59
yeah.
00:02:00
It was a lot of great childhood
00:02:02
memories. Over time, Diane and Gene
00:02:06
decided that it was best for all
00:02:08
concerned if they divorced.
00:02:12
On September 17th, the couple met for
00:02:15
dinner at a nearby restaurant to discuss
00:02:17
the final details of the property
00:02:19
settlement and visitation.
00:02:21
By all accounts, the meeting went well.
00:02:24
Afterwards, Diane dropped Gene off at
00:02:26
his apartment.
00:02:28
From there, Diane drove to the Amber Inn
00:02:31
where she met Bob Marlin, a man she had
00:02:33
been casually dating since her
00:02:35
separation.
00:02:37
A few hours later, Gene Kiddell called
00:02:40
Diane at the house and when the children
00:02:43
said she still wasn't home, he went over
00:02:45
to babysit and fell asleep on the sofa.
00:02:50
The next morning, Gene said he found his
00:02:52
wife's car in the driveway, but there
00:02:54
was no sign of her. Gene called the
00:02:57
police department and reported her
00:02:59
missing.
00:03:00
I know she arrived home. Her car was
00:03:02
there. Her purse was in the house. Her
00:03:05
keys were in the house on the table in
00:03:08
the kitchen. Diane did not take any
00:03:10
clothes with her that we learned of and
00:03:13
there was no reason for her to run away.
00:03:15
There was no no motive there.
00:03:18
Missing persons investigators couldn't
00:03:20
understand why Diane would have left
00:03:23
town without her children.
00:03:25
Her neighbors, her mother, and her
00:03:27
brother all indicated that Mrs. Kiddell
00:03:30
would never leave her children for any
00:03:32
length of time. They described her as an
00:03:35
excellent mother.
00:03:36
Very concerned about her children.
00:03:39
When police went to interview Bob
00:03:41
Marlin, the man Diane was with at the
00:03:43
bar, they were told an incredible piece
00:03:46
of news.
00:03:48
Bob Marlin suffered a heart attack and
00:03:50
died the day after his date with Diane.
00:03:55
Whatever Marlin might have known about
00:03:57
Diane's disappearance
00:03:59
went with him to his grave.

00:04:06
Two days after Diane Kiddell's
00:04:08
mysterious disappearance, Gene Kiddell
00:04:11
moved back into the family home to look
00:04:13
after the four children.
00:04:15
My father's explanation to not only his
00:04:18
children, but to neighbors and anybody
00:04:21
that that would inquire about my
00:04:23
mother's
00:04:25
sudden disappearance was that my mother
00:04:27
had run off with with a boyfriend.
00:04:31
Gene provided police with a list of men
00:04:33
he said Diane had been dating since the
00:04:35
separation, but they all were dead ends.
00:04:39
Over time, the Kiddell children adjusted
00:04:42
to life without their mother. Although
00:04:45
they all hoped that someday she would
00:04:47
return.
00:04:48
[Music]
00:04:50
But 4 months later, tragedy struck once
00:04:53
again. Around 9:00 at night, while Gene
00:04:56
was at a nearby laundromat,
00:04:59
a fire broke out in the Kiddell's home.
00:05:03
The blaze quickly engulfed the entire
00:05:05
house and the four children were trapped
00:05:07
in their bedrooms.

00:05:15
Susie, the oldest, led the others around
00:05:18
the flames.

00:05:21
But Lori ran back into her bedroom for
00:05:23
her Winnie the Pooh stuffed animal.
00:05:29
I fell on the floor. I was burned. I was
00:05:31
crying. I wanted my mother.
00:05:35
And my older sister Susie came in. The
00:05:38
house was ablaze around us and so she
00:05:40
laid on top of me.
00:05:42
She said that they're coming for us now,
00:05:44
Lori. They'll help us.
00:05:46
Uh she said I love you.
00:05:48
And she said I'll never ever leave you.
00:05:51
[Music]
00:05:56
And at that point we died and she held
00:05:59
me.
00:06:00
[Music]
00:06:01
Susie gave her life protecting Lori from
00:06:05
the flames. Although Lori suffered
00:06:07
third-degree burns over 50% of her body.
00:06:12
I was
00:06:14
continually loved by my sister
00:06:17
as she held me and died protecting me.
00:06:20
The trauma,
00:06:22
the nightmares, the horror of it,
00:06:25
that doesn't go away.
00:06:27
I just tried to overcome that with
00:06:31
knowing that I was loved, that I was
00:06:34
valuable enough
00:06:37
to die for.
00:06:40
What can you say? I mean, when you see
00:06:41
that, it takes your breath away. I mean,
00:06:43
you you you realize that that person
00:06:44
made the ultimate sacrifice.
00:06:47
8-year-old Kelly also died in the fire.
00:06:51
9-year-old Greg survived.
00:06:54
Gene Kiddell arrived at the scene just
00:06:56
as firemen were pulling the children
00:06:57
from the blaze.
00:06:59
Investigators found a melted pot on the
00:07:02
stovetop burner.
00:07:04
The knob was in the on position.
00:07:06
As a result, the fire was ruled
00:07:09
accidental.
00:07:11
After spending 4 months in a hospital
00:07:13
burn unit, Lori went back to live in the
00:07:16
family home her father had rebuilt after
00:07:19
the fire.
00:07:20
But 1 year later, there was an incident
00:07:23
that helped Lori realize the terrible
00:07:25
truth of what happened to her mother.
00:07:31
It happened when Lori and her father
00:07:33
went to a friend's funeral. His name was
00:07:35
Michael, a boy from the neighborhood who
00:07:38
was killed in the Vietnam War.
00:07:41
Daddy, when is he going to wake up? He's
00:07:44
not. He's dead. They're going to bury
00:07:46
him today.
00:07:48
Wake him up!
00:07:50
Wake him up! And I began to cry and I
00:07:53
threw a very large distraction, a very
00:07:55
large fit
00:07:58
trying to make people understand that we
00:08:00
needed to wake Michael up, that I wasn't
00:08:03
going to permit them to bury Michael in
00:08:05
the ground. I was the only
00:08:08
living
00:08:11
person that now knew the
00:08:14
But it took another 27 years for Lori to
00:08:18
reveal the deep, dark family secret she
00:08:22
had been harboring.
00:08:24
[Music]
00:08:28
In 1993,
00:08:30
after Diane Kiddell had been missing for
00:08:32
27 years, her only surviving daughter
00:08:36
Lori walked into the Phoenix Police
00:08:38
Department with a written statement. It
00:08:41
described a terrible secret she had been
00:08:44
too afraid to reveal.
00:08:47
To whom it may concern, I need to convey
00:08:50
to authorities what I witnessed as a
00:08:52
child. First, I must greatly impress the
00:08:55
fear I have of my father's violent
00:08:57
retaliation.
00:08:59
I was often told when I was a child by
00:09:01
my father, I brought you into this
00:09:04
world, I can take you out.
00:09:07
The letter went on to say that as a
00:09:09
5-year-old child, Lori saw her father
00:09:13
beat her mother to death
00:09:15
and then bury her in the backyard.
00:09:20
At first, Lori thought her mother was
00:09:22
sleeping as hibernating animals do. She
00:09:26
said she once asked her father if she
00:09:28
could dig a hole in the backyard to feed
00:09:31
her mother.
00:09:33
As a 5-year-old, I thought my mother was
00:09:35
sleeping. I thought that my father made
00:09:38
my mother go to sleep.
00:09:41
And I thought he buried my sleeping
00:09:43
mother in the hole in the backyard.
00:09:46
I wasn't confused on where she was.
00:09:49
I wasn't confused on who did it. I was
00:09:52
confused between sleeping and death.
00:09:55
She's only sleeping. Only after she went
00:09:58
to her friend's funeral did she realize
00:10:01
that her mother would never wake up.
00:10:05
[Music]
00:10:06
Detective Ed Reynolds at first wasn't
00:10:09
sure what to think. I've been lied to by
00:10:12
some pretty good liars and I've been
00:10:14
fooled by a lot of people and when that
00:10:17
happens you tell yourself, well, I'm not
00:10:18
going to let that happen again. I'm not
00:10:20
going to fall hook, line, and sinker for
00:10:22
every story that comes down the pipe.
00:10:24
And in this case though, she did seem
00:10:26
very believable, very truthful, very
00:10:28
sincere in what she said, but I still
00:10:30
I wanted more than just a story. I I
00:10:32
wanted
00:10:33
proof.
00:10:35
Lori said that her father poured a
00:10:37
concrete patio over her mother's grave
00:10:40
the day after he buried her.
00:10:43
The home had long since been sold by her
00:10:45
father, who was now remarried and living
00:10:48
across town.
00:10:50
Reynolds was hesitant to ask the new
00:10:52
owners for permission to dig up their
00:10:54
concrete patio without more evidence
00:10:57
than a 27-year recollection.
00:11:00
I became very frustrated.
00:11:03
I became angry.
00:11:05
I thought that possibly the officials
00:11:08
didn't believe me.
00:11:10
I was terrified that my father would
00:11:12
find out that I had confessed.
00:11:15
Reynolds looked all over the country for
00:11:17
the technology that could look
00:11:19
underneath the concrete patio without
00:11:22
damaging it.
00:11:23
The search took almost a year and led to
00:11:26
a non-profit agency in Colorado called
00:11:29
NecroSearch,
00:11:30
which brings applied sciences to law
00:11:33
enforcement.
00:11:35
In this case, NecroSearch recommended a
00:11:38
ground penetrating radar system.
00:11:42
To take a look within the ground and to
00:11:43
see if it's disturbed. That's what we do
00:11:45
in geophysics.
00:11:46
Just because we find a disturbance could
00:11:48
be could be caused by many things.
00:11:51
The proof and the substantiation is
00:11:53
going to have to be a careful
00:11:54
excavation.
00:11:57
When the radar was pulled across the
00:11:59
cement decking, it revealed a ground
00:12:02
disturbance 6 ft long by 2 ft wide in
00:12:06
the corner of the patio.
00:12:09
The very spot on the concrete where Lori
00:12:12
Romaneck had taken me to earlier when we
00:12:15
had walked through the backyard, where
00:12:17
she suspected
00:12:19
the body of her mother was buried.
00:12:22
When police removed the concrete,
00:12:25
they had to dig only 10 in
00:12:28
before making a grisly discovery.
00:12:31
A piece of human skull.
00:12:35
Within hours, they uncovered the rest of
00:12:38
the remains in the shallow 2-ft grave.
00:12:41
They also discovered a bra and a girdle.
00:12:46
Around the skeleton's neck were women's
00:12:49
stockings.
00:12:51
Lori Romaneck was not at all surprised.
00:12:55
No, I I don't need any medical
00:12:56
detectives to prove to me that that's my
00:12:58
mother.
00:13:00
There was no identification on the
00:13:02
remains and bacteria in the shallow
00:13:05
grave eliminated the possibility of DNA
00:13:08
testing.
00:13:10
Even the teeth were too badly damaged by
00:13:12
bacteria to analyze the tooth pulp,
00:13:15
usually a rich, protected source of DNA.
00:13:19
So, detectives had to use other means to
00:13:21
identify the skeleton.
00:13:24
The first clue was a tree root from a
00:13:26
neighbor's mulberry tree that had grown
00:13:29
through the skull. The root was sent to
00:13:32
Dr. Thomas Harlan, a dendrochronologist
00:13:35
at the University of Arizona.
00:13:38
By studying the age of the tree root and
00:13:40
the manner in which it penetrated the
00:13:42
skull, Harlan was convinced that the
00:13:45
body was placed in the ground before the
00:13:48
tree root.
00:13:49
Since the root was 15 years old, the
00:13:52
body was placed in the grave before
00:13:54
1978.
00:13:57
This will tell us the age of the tree
00:13:59
root growing over the body means that
00:14:02
the body had to be there before the tree
00:14:04
root was there.
00:14:06
Otherwise, it would have been cut,
00:14:08
disturbed, would not have gone across.
00:14:11
Um,
00:14:12
this gives a minimum age for the body to
00:14:15
be in that position.
00:14:17
Forensic anthropologist Dr. Laura
00:14:19
Fulginiti analyzed the skeletal remains
00:14:23
and determined it was a Caucasian woman
00:14:25
between 5 ft 4 and 5 ft 5 in in height.
00:14:30
The pelvic bones indicated that the
00:14:32
woman had given birth to at least two
00:14:34
children and was between 20 and 40 years
00:14:37
of age. All were consistent with Diane
00:14:40
Kyddell.
00:14:42
Dental X-rays are commonly used for
00:14:45
identification. Unfortunately, Diane
00:14:48
Kyddell's dentist was no longer in
00:14:50
practice and her dental X-rays had been
00:14:52
destroyed.
00:14:54
As a last-ditch effort to identify the
00:14:56
remains, Dr. Fulginiti decided to try a
00:15:00
technique called skull photograph
00:15:02
superimposition.
00:15:04
What you basically are doing is taking a
00:15:06
picture of the person in life and
00:15:09
superimposing it onto the skull of the
00:15:12
person that you think it might have
00:15:13
been.
00:15:14
Dr. Fulginiti photographed the skull in
00:15:17
the same position and size as the
00:15:19
photograph of Diane Kyddell taken
00:15:22
shortly before she disappeared.
00:15:25
A canine tooth that was slightly ajar.
00:15:27
It's it just stuck out slightly from her
00:15:30
mouth. We were able to line that tooth
00:15:32
up with the tooth in the photograph. I
00:15:34
have no questions. I'm sure that it's
00:15:36
her.
00:15:37
Police immediately arrested 61-year-old
00:15:41
Gene Kyddell and charged him with
00:15:44
murder.
00:15:46
Lori Romaneck was now ready to tell a
00:15:48
judge and jury what really happened on
00:15:52
the night her mother disappeared.
00:15:58
For years, Gene Kyddell told family and
00:16:01
friends that his wife Diane abandoned
00:16:04
her children and ran off with a
00:16:05
boyfriend.
00:16:07
But Lori Romaneck told a very different
00:16:10
story about what happened to her mother
00:16:12
on the night of September 17th, 1966.
00:16:19
Lori said her mother was wearing her
00:16:21
blue double-breasted dress when she left
00:16:24
to meet her father for dinner at a local
00:16:26
restaurant.
00:16:29
After dinner, Diane drove Gene home to
00:16:32
his apartment. Later, witnesses saw
00:16:34
Diane at the Amber Inn having drinks
00:16:37
with a boyfriend.
00:16:39
Around 11:00 p.m., Gene called the house
00:16:42
to speak with Diane and when he learned
00:16:45
that she wasn't there, went over to the
00:16:48
house to wait for her.
00:16:51
When Diane returned home around
00:16:53
midnight, the couple fought, waking
00:16:55
5-year-old Lori and her older sister
00:16:58
Susie.
00:17:00
The two girls went to investigate.
00:17:10
When she saw her children, she took her
00:17:13
defense down and it was at that point
00:17:16
that my father delivered her last blow
00:17:19
and she whipped back and hit her head
00:17:22
and slid to the floor.

00:17:28
Gene saw the girls run from the hallway
00:17:31
and they hid in the closet.
00:17:33
[Music]
00:17:48
When the children eventually came out of
00:17:51
hiding,
00:17:52
they saw their mother's lifeless body on
00:17:55
the pool deck and they saw their father
00:17:58
digging a hole in the backyard.

00:18:18
The next day, Gene Kyddell poured a
00:18:21
fresh layer of concrete over his wife's
00:18:23
grave for what he thought would be an
00:18:26
eternity.
00:18:28
Lori describes her father as an
00:18:30
alcoholic, cruel, and violent. We're
00:18:34
talking about the fact that my father
00:18:35
would beat my mother.
00:18:38
Violently.
00:18:40
My father would attempt to beat his
00:18:43
children, my siblings and I.
00:18:45
And when my mother was alive, she would
00:18:47
intervene.
00:18:48
And she would not permit my father to
00:18:51
beat his children.
00:18:53
She was very strong on that issue.
00:18:57
Lori also says that her father
00:18:59
threatened to kill her if she ever
00:19:02
revealed the tales of her mother's
00:19:04
death.
00:19:05
This was something that Lori says that
00:19:08
she never forgot.
00:19:10
And she had just been terrified for her
00:19:12
whole childhood and then adult life of
00:19:15
her of her father, even after she got
00:19:17
married and left the house and they
00:19:19
barely had a relationship at some
00:19:21
points. It was she remembered the thing
00:19:23
the whole way through and somehow, I
00:19:25
mean, I don't think there's anyone that
00:19:27
really could
00:19:29
exactly describe what was going on in
00:19:31
that head of hers all those years.
00:19:34
In 1995,
00:19:36
Gene Kyddell was convicted for the
00:19:38
murder of his wife Diane
00:19:42
and was sentenced to life in prison.
00:19:45
I think it says that the memory of a
00:19:47
5-year-old, even though it's some 29
00:19:49
years later, is sufficient to convict.
00:19:52
But again, remember the one unanswerable
00:19:54
question was if what she saw wasn't what
00:19:57
she saw, how could she have led us to
00:19:58
the body? And she did.
00:20:00
My father single-handedly murdered my
00:20:03
mother,
00:20:04
murdered my two siblings, and attempted
00:20:08
a murder on me, and a murder on my
00:20:10
brother.
00:20:11
I think that my father will
00:20:16
more meet his calling upon his death.
00:20:20
I I pray for my father.
00:20:22
I think that this judicial system will
00:20:25
have nothing
00:20:27
in the comparison of the wrath of God.
00:20:29
And that I'm sorry for.
00:20:32
My father will have to answer and be
00:20:34
held accountable.
00:20:36
What does a man tell
00:20:38
our creator God
00:20:40
when God says, "What did you do to that
00:20:43
beautiful wife and lovely children I
00:20:44
gave you?" And my father will reply, "I
00:20:47
beat them. I murdered them.
00:20:50
I burned them up in a horrible fire."
00:20:53
What will be my father's punishment?
00:20:57
I'm sorry. That causes me
00:21:02
the grief
00:21:03
that I feel today for him.
