Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 9, Episode 9 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 45:02

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers bee venom therapy for multiple sclerosis, the retrial of Alex Kelly in a rape case, and the murder of exotic dancer Jamie Santos.

Kelly Ames and Maureen Norton, both suffering from multiple sclerosis, share their experiences with bee venom therapy, claiming it has significantly improved their symptoms. Kelly recounts her journey from losing her ability to walk to regaining her vision and mobility through this unconventional treatment.

The episode also revisits the notorious Alex Kelly case, which ended in a hung jury after a decade of legal battles. It highlights the pivotal evidence surrounding the alleged rape and the complexities of the case as Kelly awaits retrial.

Lastly, the murder of Jamie Santos is examined, focusing on the mysterious 911 call made by an anonymous male voice. Investigators are left questioning whether the caller was a Good Samaritan or the killer, as they explore the circumstances surrounding her death.

Throughout the episode, viewers are encouraged to consider the implications of these stories and the mysteries that remain unsolved.

TL;DR

Two women with MS credit bee venom therapy for recovery, while the Alex Kelly rape case and Jamie Santos' murder raise unresolved questions.

00:00:05
tonight on unsolved mysteries most
00:00:09
people would go to great lengths to
00:00:11
avoid the fiery pain of obesity most but
00:00:14
not all meet two women with multiple
00:00:16
sclerosis were convinced at the venom of
00:00:19
honeybees have been their salvation
00:00:22
after 10 years of scandal and
00:00:24
controversy the notorious preppy rape
00:00:26
case ended in a hung jury now Alex Kelly
00:00:29
son of wealth and privilege awaits the
00:00:31
start of his retrial in a special
00:00:34
demonstration we'll examine a key piece
00:00:36
of evidence that apparently helped
00:00:38
decide the outcome for Jamie Santos the
00:00:42
benefits of exotic dancing always
00:00:44
outweighed the risks then Jamie was
00:00:46
found murdered in her apartment
00:00:48
incredibly police believe the killer
00:00:51
himself may have reported the crime in
00:00:55
Nevada a forest ranger and his family

are targeted at simmering hostilities

violence
00:01:03
also they were separated as young

Atlantic nearly 50 years lately they've
00:01:10
been reunited here in the United States
00:01:14
jointly perhaps you hold the key perhaps
00:01:17
you may be able to help solve a mystery

00:02:09
there is no mistaking the sound a quiet
00:02:13
thunder of bees unless you're in the
00:02:17
honey business you undoubtedly avoid any
00:02:19
person-to-person contact with bees
00:02:22
however to some people honey bees are
00:02:25
miniature flying drugstores dispensaries
00:02:27
of miracle cures you're about to meet
00:02:31
two women who say they've experienced
00:02:33
the miracle both have multiple sclerosis
00:02:35
or MS a crippling disease of the nervous
00:02:38
system whose complications can be fatal
00:02:41
both have reversed the course of MS
00:02:43
through a controversial treatment known
00:02:45
as bee venom therapy literally stinging
00:02:48
themselves with honey bees
00:02:55
Kelly Ames was in high school when a
00:02:58
mess first crept into her life by the
00:03:00
time Kelly was 22 her symptoms became
00:03:03
impossible to ignore one day I was in
00:03:06
work and I was walking down a flight of
00:03:08
stairs they must have been like 12
00:03:10
stairs where I just lost the feeling in
00:03:13
my feet like all of a sudden and I fell
00:03:15
down a flight of stairs and the women in
00:03:18
my office were like wow you know I
00:03:19
explained to them that my feet sometimes
00:03:21
getting numb medical tests revealed a
00:03:26
cruel truth Kelly had MS the unforgiving
00:03:30
disease first robbed her of the ability
00:03:32
to walk alone before long MS was
00:03:35
attacking her eyes it's like it took
00:03:43
over my life
00:03:44
but then that week I lost the vision in
00:03:46
my left eye and I had no control over my
00:03:48
muscles it was just very devastating I
00:03:52
hated to depend on other people but at
00:03:54
times I need to have the people to help
00:03:56
me Kelly's doctor put her on steroids
00:04:00
these potent drugs can temporarily
00:04:03
relieve the symptoms of MS but no drug
00:04:06
can stop its advance having the steroid
00:04:11
dripped into my arm I would sit there
00:04:12
for an hour and a half looking at other
00:04:14
MS people coming in in a wheelchairs and
00:04:16
wondering if that's gonna be me some day
00:04:18
you know in that wheelchair then Kelly
00:04:22
met a woman would literally walked away
00:04:23
from her wheelchair after systematically
00:04:26
stinging herself with honeybees for
00:04:29
Kelly Ames it was a last ray of hope
00:04:32
[Music]
00:04:35
Kelly's father brought her to a local
00:04:37
beekeeper who had been helping MS
00:04:39
patients for years he was happy to
00:04:41
donate the honeybees the rest would be
00:04:44
up to Kelly he told me that he didn't
00:04:49
want to be bothered by me if I wasn't
00:04:51
serious about it he says you have to do
00:04:52
this for six months treat every other
00:04:54
day faithfully increase it by two every
00:04:56
other day until you get to 20 and he
00:05:01
scared me when he said that because I
00:05:02
realized that I really had to take the
00:05:04
responsibility of sticking to this and I
00:05:07
did Kelly and her boyfriend set up a
00:05:13
morning routine he placed the bees of
00:05:15
specific spots on Kelly's body spots for
00:05:18
nerves running to the damaged areas are
00:05:21
most accessible for Kelly's failing
00:05:23
eyesight that was behind the ear these
00:05:30
were also positioned on Kelly's lower
00:05:32
back to treat the weakness in her legs
00:05:34
the bees were left in place for as long
00:05:37
as 15 minutes to allow all their venom
00:05:39
to penetrate Kelly skin ms had so
00:05:46
ravished Kelly's nervous system that she
00:05:48
stung herself several hundred times
00:05:50
before actually feeling the full wallop
00:05:52
of a sting I could actually feel what a
00:05:55
bee sting felt like and hit hurt it
00:05:58
really hurt I was screaming I had my
00:06:00
head in my pillow and I was screaming
00:06:01
and I was screaming because I was happy
00:06:04
because I could fail again I knew that
00:06:09
this therapy was starting to work
00:06:11
because within a week my eyesight
00:06:14
started to slowly come back I didn't
00:06:16
depend on my cane as much and right then
00:06:19
and there I just knew finally this was
00:06:21
kicking in and it was working for me I
00:06:23
know Kelly Ames and her situation is a
00:06:28
perfect example of how bee venom therapy
00:06:31
helps ms she was not doing well and when
00:06:36
she started her bee venom therapy it had
00:06:38
a clear difference in her symptoms and
00:06:41
her outlook on life
00:06:44
do you think your nomina in that area
00:06:47
okay okay what I'm gonna do is grab the
00:06:49
be part of the body today Kelly Ames
00:06:53
teaches bee venom therapy to others in
00:06:55
the grip of multiple sclerosis some
00:06:58
doctors dismiss the therapy is little
00:07:00
better than voodoo
00:07:01
Kelly's remarkable recovery is hardly
00:07:04
unique when I decided to do
00:07:07
bee venom therapy we kind of kept it a
00:07:10
little hush-hush because I didn't know
00:07:12
what other people's reactions would be I
00:07:16
know what they have reactions from my
00:07:18
doctors were so I figured you know well
00:07:20
we'll keep it a little quiet
00:07:22
[Music]
00:07:26
Maureen Norton began to experience the
00:07:29
symptoms of MS shortly after the birth
00:07:31
of her second child she was seized by a
00:07:34
tingling pins and needles sensation in
00:07:36
her legs that made walking nearly
00:07:38
impossible it was very scary I just kind
00:07:44
of pictured my myself in a wheelchair
00:07:47
holding my little baby and my son along
00:07:50
the side you know I didn't I didn't want
00:07:54
that but that was right where Maureen
00:07:57
was headed
00:07:58
then she started be venom therapy
00:08:02
I was always afraid of bees and about
00:08:06
being stung but I just felt that this
00:08:10
was my only answer
00:08:11
a beekeeper who lived nearby agreed to
00:08:15
teach Maureen the fine art of beer
00:08:17
angling how to grab its bristly neck and
00:08:20
coerce it to jab its stinger at
00:08:21
precisely the right location I was told
00:08:24
this thing I read enough happier foot
00:08:26
right here okay where the time Laureen
00:08:29
got started with bee stings a mess had
00:08:31
numbed her feet so thoroughly she could
00:08:33
hardly sense they were there to the
00:08:35
touch
00:08:36
Lorraine's feet were icy blue cold okay
00:08:43
I think that's long enough
00:08:45
[Music]
00:08:47
within minutes my foot was warm you
00:08:52
could feel the venom going through in
00:08:53
the blood like you know there was life
00:08:56
in my foot again it was just an
00:08:58
incredible feeling I knew right from
00:09:00
that moment that something good was
00:09:03
happening and I felt that this was going
00:09:05
to help me how much did it help
00:09:10
this photograph of Maureen and her son
00:09:13
was taken six weeks after she began the
00:09:15
sting therapy
00:09:16
Maureen has just crossed the finish line
00:09:19
in a seven mile MS walkathon
00:09:23
three weeks later Maureen was prancing
00:09:25
across the dance floor at a party
00:09:27
celebrating her spectacular recovery
00:09:31
today I'm very active person I haven't
00:09:36
had any attacks sometimes depending if
00:09:41
the stress gets too much in my life that
00:09:43
you know I'll get some pins and needles
00:09:45
feelings in my hands or in my right knee
00:09:47
I immediately just take my B's out and
00:09:50
I'll give myself a couple of stings and
00:09:52
the feelings gone should we prize bees
00:09:57
for their sting as well as their honey
00:10:00
mainstream science has hardly begun to
00:10:02
address the question well some doctors
00:10:04
believe bee venom therapy is far too
00:10:07
promising to be ignored at first it may
00:10:11
be easy to dismiss bee venom therapy the
00:10:13
fact is it sounds a little kooky
00:10:16
however in studying about bee venom
00:10:19
there are certain substances which make
00:10:22
sense in multiple sclerosis therapy we
00:10:26
know that the immune system is involved
00:10:28
and of course a neurologic system is
00:10:30
involved therefore be venom which has
00:10:33
components which affect both the immune
00:10:35
system and neurologic system is a
00:10:39
natural substance which seems to have
00:10:43
some effects in MS skeptics might argue
00:10:47
that improvements reported by B
00:10:48
advocates are in reality the periodic
00:10:51
remissions typical of MS
00:10:53
but Kelly Ames has convinced her
00:10:55
progress is a direct result of bee venom
00:10:58
therapy I stopped doing the therapy for
00:11:02
a couple of weeks and I felt myself
00:11:04
sliding back I felt some symptoms coming
00:11:07
on again and it scared me
00:11:08
so right away I grabbed a bee I stung
00:11:11
myself a couple of times and within
00:11:13
seconds I could feel it go throughout my
00:11:14
body and stimulate my muscles and make
00:11:16
me much stronger so right then and there
00:11:18
I know I'm not in remission it's time
00:11:20
for physicians and the medical community
00:11:22
to take a serious look at whether bee
00:11:25
venom may relieve the suffering of some
00:11:27
of our patients estimates are that as
00:11:33
many as 10,000 MS patients are currently
00:11:35
using bee venom therapy proponents also
00:11:38
claim success in treating arthritis and
00:11:40
chronic fatigue syndrome recently the
00:11:44
multiple sclerosis Association of
00:11:46
America began funding major scientific
00:11:48
research on this controversial treatment
00:11:50
the experts do have one warning roughly
00:11:54
one person in 25 is deathly allergic to
00:11:56
honey bee stings anyone considering this
00:11:59
treatment should consult a physician
00:12:04
coming up last November the rape trial
00:12:08
of Alex Kelly ended in a hung jury now
00:12:10
we put a critical defense claim to the
00:12:12
test
00:12:14
also when a popular exotic dancer is
00:12:17
murdered the only clue is an anonymous
00:12:19
call to 911 first a u.s. forest ranger
00:12:25
searches for the unknown bomber who
00:12:26
attacked his family
00:12:30
[Music]
00:12:41
March 31st 1995 Carson City Nevada u.s.
00:12:51
Forest Service ranger guide pence was
00:12:53
called to work just after dawn an
00:12:55
explosion had ripped through his office
00:12:57
the night before do you have any idea
00:13:00
what kind of bomb this was the FBI
00:13:02
initially believed the bomber had
00:13:04
targeted the building not any particular
00:13:06
employees guy pence suspected otherwise
00:13:09
I really always thought that it was
00:13:13
aimed as a direct statement to me now it
00:13:17
may be aimed as a direct statement to me
00:13:19
as a district Ranger or as a federal
00:13:22
employee and not so much at me
00:13:26
specifically why would guy pence for the
00:13:30
Forest Service be a target perhaps
00:13:32
because they are on the front line of a
00:13:34
war most of us don't even know about
00:13:36
some call it the sagebrush rebellion an
00:13:39
informal alliance of people opposed to
00:13:41
federal control of local public lands
00:13:44
for most of this century ranchers
00:13:49
loggers and miners have had permits that
00:13:51
gave them access to huge tracts of that
00:13:53
land in some families those permits have
00:13:56
been handed down through five
00:13:57
generations over a long history we've
00:14:03
always had conflicts over natural
00:14:04
resource management and that can be
00:14:08
conflicts over grazing timber harvests
00:14:12
recreation to accommodate all users and
00:14:17
protect the diminishing resources the
00:14:19
u.s. Forest Service began to restrict
00:14:21
private use as district Ranger it was up
00:14:24
to guide pens to make sure everyone
00:14:26
complied with the new rules everybody on
00:14:29
the district across the board is going
00:14:31
to make a 20% cut
00:14:32
well I reckon we've been through worse
00:14:35
we'll handle this one too most people
00:14:39
didn't like it but they went alone
00:14:41
however son saw a guy pens himself is
00:14:44
the inner you wind up with 22 extra
00:14:46
tomorrow just bring it back up on your
00:14:49
own and we'll just call it good I don't
00:14:51
think that's the case we're running the
00:14:52
whole herd through Michael we went
00:14:54
through this we said 800 and you said
00:14:56
you weren't gonna give me any trouble
00:14:57
about it I don't think that's the case
00:14:59
died making a mistake park guide pet
00:15:03
says seems like this had become a
00:15:05
regular part of his job similar
00:15:08
conflicts all over the West what
00:15:09
originally gave rise to the sagebrush
00:15:11
ribbon the issue that we have here is
00:15:17
these people have a right to graze
00:15:19
forage they have a right to mine
00:15:21
minerals they have a right to harvest
00:15:23
trim timber and the bureaucrats have
00:15:26
exceeded their authority in some way or
00:15:29
trying to stop them one way or the other
00:15:31
and we are standing up as county
00:15:34
governments to protect their rights
00:15:37
ironically many of the people opposed to
00:15:40
the new federal rules are local elected
00:15:42
leaders like commissioner carver
00:15:44
however they to say they are dismayed by
00:15:46
violent acts like the bombing of Pence's
00:15:49
office we were devastated by it the
00:15:53
first thing we did is notified our
00:15:55
County Sheriff's Department to put extra
00:15:58
patrol on on all the federal agency
00:16:01
employees in my County we posted
00:16:06
$100,000 bond we want to put a stop to
00:16:10
it as bad as anybody else four months
00:16:15
after the bombing any question about
00:16:16
whether guy pens had been personally
00:16:18
targeted was erased
00:16:20
pence took a backcountry assignment he
00:16:23
brought along his youngest daughter guys
00:16:25
wife Linda stayed at home with her two
00:16:27
older daughters it was August 4th 1995
00:16:33
we had been making pickles which is a
00:16:37
very hot job and lots of boiling water
00:16:39
going on in the kitchen to add to the
00:16:41
heat of the whole house and we were
00:16:43
about finished and had rendered
00:16:45
a movie and Morgan and I had got into
00:16:48
the front room to get that started he
00:16:51
sat down next to the windows yeah sure
00:16:54
Coulter our oldest daughter was back in
00:16:57
her bedroom at the back side of the
00:16:59
house talking on the phone with a friend
00:17:07
who's that what you didn't hear that
00:17:11
what'd you hear I think I heard someone
00:17:14
walking there or footsteps or something
00:17:16
out there okay there's the buzzer for
00:17:22
the pickles key grab them oh yeah
00:17:27
when Linda looked outside she saw
00:17:29
nothing unusual Thanks I went into the
00:17:38
kitchen and Morgan said this is gonna
00:17:42
take a few minutes I better go turn off
00:17:43
the movie
00:17:44
[Music]
00:18:10
fortunately no one was hurt the homemade
00:18:13
bomb had been placed directly beneath
00:18:15
dye Pence's van the charred wreckage was
00:18:18
an unmistakable message it's a very hard
00:18:26
thought to accept that someone would try
00:18:29
to kill your family there's absolutely
00:18:34
no doubt in my mind that whoever did
00:18:36
this knew my family wasn't home the
00:18:39
windows were open the lights were on the
00:18:42
TV was on my own daughter heard their
00:18:45
footsteps and that they left a killing
00:18:48
device and ran into the darkness I have
00:18:53
a hard time comprehending how any human
00:18:56
could do that like the first bombing
00:19:00
there were a few solid clues and no
00:19:02
suspects the FBI laboratory in
00:19:07
Washington DC has advised us that these
00:19:10
bombs are very similar in construction
00:19:13
and most likely were manufactured by the
00:19:17
same individual we're not looking for a
00:19:20
sophisticated bomber in this particular
00:19:23
case we're looking for someone who knows
00:19:25
the basics and the basic use and
00:19:30
application of explosives to make this
00:19:33
bomb but if this was not a mastermind by
00:19:35
any stretch of the imagination
00:19:39
while the FBI continued searching for
00:19:41
the person or persons responsible for
00:19:43
both attacks guy Pence and his family
00:19:46
have moved to another location he could
00:19:49
have quit his job the guy chose to keep
00:19:51
working for the Forest Service I think
00:19:55
the stakes are very high those stakes
00:19:58
are our natural resources those stakes
00:20:01
belong to all of us 300 million
00:20:03
Americans and those unborn today those
00:20:06
are those resources belong to them it's
00:20:10
extremely important to me that that the
00:20:13
forces that support this kind of thing
00:20:15
understand that this is not ever how you
00:20:17
win that you only lose that's extremely
00:20:20
important that this perpetrator be
00:20:24
brought to justice so that everyone
00:20:25
understands this is not how we solve our
00:20:28
problems next a woman is reunited with
00:20:34
their long-lost brother thanks to you

most of us would gladly spend a lifetime
00:21:00
trying to find someone we love tonight's
00:21:03
update took that and more it involves a
00:21:06
search to span two continents two
00:21:07
generations in almost half a century
00:21:14
Plymouth England 1952 Helena Kurowski
00:21:18
helped her five-year-old son prepare for
00:21:20
a long journey
00:21:21
Christopher was going to the United
00:21:23
States with another family mr.
00:21:28
Christopher
00:21:29
my mother didn't really want to send him
00:21:31
with somebody else but my father kept
00:21:34
saying you know education education he's
00:21:37
going to get a good education he's going
00:21:40
to be able to start school so it was
00:21:42
easier for him but my mother I guess
00:21:45
being a woman it just tore at her heart
00:21:52
it was only seven years after world war
00:21:54
two refugees from Eastern Europe like
00:21:57
Helena and her husband Apollinaire we
00:21:59
desperately wanted a better life in
00:22:01
America Christopher would live with
00:22:04
friends until the karofsky's and their
00:22:06
daughter Michelle could follow
00:22:09
a few months later however the
00:22:17
karofsky's changed their plans and
00:22:19
decided to stay in England they wrote
00:22:22
their friends in America asking them to
00:22:23
send Christopher back they don't send
00:22:35
the kurowsky stride every Avenue they
00:22:38
could think of to have Christopher
00:22:39
returned but there was nothing anyone
00:22:41
could do the cows Keys never saw
00:22:44
Christopher again in 1973 Apollinaire II
00:22:50
died 20 years later Helena also passed
00:22:53
away her last wish was that her children
00:22:56
would someday be reunited I want to be
00:23:00
able to tell him how much my mother left
00:23:03
him how she never forgot him how - the
00:23:08
day she died but she loved him after so
00:23:16
many years we knew finding Michelle's
00:23:18
brother might be a long shot in fact the
00:23:20
story aired several times a little
00:23:22
response but not long ago the right
00:23:25
person was watching Keeley che Smith is
00:23:28
on maternity leave
00:23:29
he's Luthan Sen with the details thanks
00:23:33
Bob as it turned out the critical viewer
00:23:35
was Christopher's adoptive sister when
00:23:38
she told him about Michelle search
00:23:39
Christopher called our phone center he
00:23:42
gave the operator specific details only
00:23:44
Michelle's long-lost brother could have
00:23:47
known a month later
00:23:51
Christopher traveled from his home in
00:23:53
upstate New York to Michelle's home
00:23:54
outside Houston Texas it was a moment 44
00:23:58
years in the making as I was waiting for
00:24:02
Christopher to come and I was looking at
00:24:05
the window I was wanting my mom to be
00:24:08
here and wishing that she was here
00:24:10
because she had dreamed of this
00:24:15
long time I really can't describe how I
00:24:24
felt
00:24:25
it's I can't describe it it's too much
00:24:29

00:25:00
describe something else I've dreamt
00:25:05
about God for it yeah 30 odd years and
00:25:09
it's here it's yeah I still keep looking
00:25:13
at him because I I can't believe it's
00:25:15
actually happened Christopher and
00:25:19
Michelle have a lot of catching up to do
00:25:21
but they're already well on their way I
00:25:25
never expected it to really happen but I
00:25:28
always dreamed that maybe one day my
00:25:32

rapist Alex Kelly after nearly a decade
00:26:25
on the run faced his accuser in court
00:26:30
she is now a grown woman she claims it
00:26:34
in February of 1986 just after her 16th
00:26:36
birthday Alex Kelly raped her the trial
00:26:40
ended with a jury hopelessly deadlocked
00:26:42
tonight with a retrial on the horizon we
00:26:45
will take a unique look at one of the
00:26:46
pivotal issues in this case which may
00:26:49
ultimately determine whether Alex Kelly
00:26:51
could in fact be guilty as charged
00:26:57
Darien Connecticut 40 miles northeast of
00:27:00
New York City is one of the country's
00:27:02
most affluent and exclusive communities
00:27:04
Alex Kelly was one of darienne's
00:27:06
brightest young men or the wealthy
00:27:08
devoted family and a promising future in
00:27:11
high school Kelly was a gifted wrestler

00:27:18
Alex Kelly was 18 years old when his
00:27:21
perfect world came crashing down on
00:27:23
February 10th 1986 he met the alleged
00:27:26
victim during a party at this house at
00:27:29
around 11:30 p.m. Kelly offered to take
00:27:32
her home in his girlfriend's Jeep
00:27:33
Wagoneer but according to the young
00:27:38
woman Alex Kelly did not drive her home
00:27:41
instead she claimed he pulled into this
00:27:44
secluded cul-de-sac and proceeded to
00:27:46
rape her four days later this time at
00:27:53
the nearby stamford country club another
00:27:56
party another young woman another
00:27:59
accusation against Alex Kelly Kelly was
00:28:05
arrested for both alleged rapes he
00:28:07
denied the charges claiming at both
00:28:09
incidents of an acts of consensual sex
00:28:11
he was released on $200,000 bond pending
00:28:15
the start of his trial
00:28:19
but when jury selection commenced Alex
00:28:22
Kelly was nowhere to be found over the
00:28:25
next eight years he continually eluded
00:28:27
the authorities then in July of 1994
00:28:33
police and FBI agents raided the Kelly
00:28:35
home in Connecticut and learned the
00:28:37
surprising truth about Alex Kelly's
00:28:39
years on the run Alex Kelly was leading
00:28:43
the good life overseas he traveled all
00:28:46
over his passport was stamped with you
00:28:48
know just dozens of countries in and out
00:28:50
of Greece and Sweden and France and all
00:28:54
over the globe
00:28:56
he spent a lot of his time at ski
00:28:59
resorts living the highlife and you know
00:29:01
he would write letters home talking
00:29:02
about his hang gliding and his
00:29:04
parasailing and and it went in one
00:29:06
letter he even said I could live like
00:29:08
this forever and he wasn't exactly
00:29:10
suffering photographs in the kelley home
00:29:15
showed Alex's parents visiting him while
00:29:18
he was in hiding investigators also
00:29:20
found a nun mail letter which revealed
00:29:22
Kelly's address in Sweden so Alex knows
00:29:28
that law enforcement closing in on him
00:29:31
now tom Puccio is hired by the family as
00:29:34
Alex's lawyer Puccio met with Alex in
00:29:37
Europe to negotiate the terms of his
00:29:39
surrender and it was shortly thereafter
00:29:41
in January of 1995 that he's surrendered
00:29:44
to Swiss authorities in May of 1995
00:29:49
Kelly was extradited to the US he was
00:29:52
arraigned on charges of sexual assault
00:29:54
and kidnapping he was released on 1
00:29:56
million dollars bond
00:30:01
the trial for the first alleged rape
00:30:03
commenced in October 1996 most days Alex
00:30:07
Kelly arrived at court hand-in-hand with
00:30:09
his old high-school girlfriend Amy
00:30:11
Molitor the star witness was Kelly's
00:30:14
alleged victim in riveting details she
00:30:17
outlined the terror she said she had
00:30:19
experienced at one point she said that
00:30:23
his hand was on her neck the entire time
00:30:25
before he pushed her into the back seat
00:30:28
of the of the Jeep and at the moat at
00:30:30
that time it just seemed like that this
00:30:32
was her description of what happened and
00:30:34
it didn't seem like this was any more
00:30:36
piece of evidence than anything else and
00:30:39
that this wasn't gonna mean anything
00:30:40
more than anything else she was saying
00:30:42
but it turned out quite differently
00:30:45
defense attorney Thomas Puccio left to
00:30:48
the attack if out is Kelly's hand had
00:30:50
never left the victims throat it would
00:30:52
have been impossible for him to both
00:30:54
release and lower the backseat with his
00:30:56
one free hand the case ended in a
00:31:04
mistrial after the six-person jury
00:31:06
deadlocked at 4:00 to convict and to to
00:31:08
acquit later some of the jurors stated
00:31:11
that the testimony about the seat latch
00:31:13
had played a major role in the
00:31:15
deliberations apparently leading some to
00:31:17
believe a rape had never occurred the
00:31:22
victim stated that he reached over and
00:31:24
grabbed her by the throat he immediately
00:31:28
put spread his legs over her body was
00:31:32
choking her
00:31:33
Connie Williams was one of the six
00:31:35
jurors although he ultimately voted to
00:31:37
convict he has lingering doubts as to
00:31:39
how the crime might have been committed
00:31:42
throat he reached around and at some
00:31:46
point she heard a clicking noise the
00:31:49
clicking noise was the lever being pull
00:31:52
the lever is a spring-loaded device
00:31:54
designed to be lifted and held up while
00:31:57
a seat is pushed down as you can see
00:32:01
there's no way that I can put this lever
00:32:05
forward let's put in my hand forward
00:32:09
and pulling in levers for it with both
00:32:12
hand in the seat there was no way I can
00:32:14
do it with one hand unsolved mysteries
00:32:18
decided to put the defense claim to the
00:32:20
test
00:32:20
we asked failure analysis Associates an
00:32:23
engineering consulting firm to conduct
00:32:25
an impartial demonstration it's the case
00:32:28
that you'll start the firm procured a
00:32:31
1983 Jeep Wagoneer and hired two actors
00:32:34
of physical characteristics similar to
00:32:36
Alex Kelly and the young woman regarding
00:32:42
the use of the seat match the actor
00:32:44
portraying Kelly was simply told where
00:32:46
the latch was and that it needed to be
00:32:48
lifted to release the seat
00:32:50
he was then told to simulate an attack
00:32:52
and simultaneously lower the back seat
00:32:55
using only one hand the test was
00:33:03
repeated three times in each instance
00:33:05
the actor successfully lowered the seat
00:33:07
without difficulty quite surprising to
00:33:15
me that he could physically move the
00:33:18
latch so quickly and move the seat back
00:33:20
so fast given the impression I had about
00:33:24
the latch mechanism when I first
00:33:26
observed the car what we're seeing in
00:33:28
this car is because of the condition of
00:33:30
this particular vehicle that it is
00:33:32
possible to lift this latch and get it
00:33:34
stuck on a exposed nut and bolt the test
00:33:40
did however contain a built-in flaw in
00:33:43
1986 the Wagoneer was just three years
00:33:45
old the vehicle in the test was 13 years
00:33:48
old the scientists believe a decade of
00:33:51
wear may have weakened the latch so that
00:33:53
it could be moved laterally
00:33:57
to approximate the amount of wear on the
00:33:59
latch at the time of the alleged
00:34:01
incident failure analysis next brought
00:34:03
in a 1990 Wagoneer one of the last years
00:34:06
a model was manufactured the test was
00:34:15
repeated with a simulated attack on four
00:34:18
occasions the actor attempted to
00:34:19
manipulate the latch and lower the seat
00:34:21
with one hand only once on his second
00:34:24
attempt and with a fair amount of
00:34:25
difficulty was he successful a simple
00:34:30
conclusion that it's possible or not
00:34:31
possible doesn't seem to be in the works
00:34:34
but nevertheless we could probably say
00:34:37
that with a with a vehicle that's in
00:34:38
relatively new condition it's very hard
00:34:40
to do with one hand although our our
00:34:43
actor was managed to do it at one time
00:34:45
so even there it's this event really
00:34:48
surprised me I think that he could do
00:34:49
that whether that seat could have been
00:34:52
operated in the way the alleged victim
00:34:54
described he's really dependent on the
00:34:56
condition of the seat and the age of the
00:34:58
vehicle and that's a primary factor in
00:35:01
figuring out whether it could have
00:35:02
happened and that's something we'll
00:35:04
never know about the subject vehicle is
00:35:06
the condition of the seat in that
00:35:08
vehicle
00:35:10
it should be noted that the subject
00:35:12
vehicle was not available for either the
00:35:14
court case or our demonstration it was
00:35:17
reported stolen approximately three
00:35:19
years after Alex Kelly was arrested

when we return she was a beautiful and
00:35:41
popular exotic dancer now the
00:35:43
investigation into her murder hinges on
00:35:46

00:35:48
a Good Samaritan or the killer himself
00:35:51
[Music]
00:36:04
you are about to hear an actual 911 it
00:36:08
was recorded by an emergency operator in
00:36:10
Wheeling Illinois just north of Chicago
00:36:13
the caller spoke from a payphone and
00:36:15
refused to give his name
00:36:16
police believe that he alone holds the
00:36:19
key to solving a murder the anonymous
00:36:52
caller was right 47 year-old Jamie
00:36:55
Santos wasn't breathing she had been
00:36:58
smothered with a pillow and nothing
00:37:00
would ever revive her Jamie had lived
00:37:05
just down the road from her family calls
00:37:07
and visits were frequent holidays were
00:37:10
spent together she was just like a burst
00:37:14
of energy when she walked in you knew
00:37:15
she was there her presence just just
00:37:20
radiates I think ultimately she just
00:37:22
wanted to get married and have a family
00:37:24
success was important to her I don't
00:37:27
think she really had a handle on what
00:37:29
she wanted to be successful at but
00:37:32
ultimately it was children and family
00:37:35
Jamie's aspirations may have been
00:37:38
unremarkable Etape but you would never
00:37:40
have guessed it if you met her on the
00:37:41
job
00:37:43
[Applause]
00:37:48
Jamie had parlayed her natural good
00:37:51
looks into a steady income
00:37:53
she pulled in better than a thousand
00:37:55
dollars a week dancing for exclusive
00:37:57
private parties in and around Chicago
00:38:00
when Jamie first told us this year was
00:38:03
going into dancing entertainment it was
00:38:07
a little difficult to handle but when
00:38:10
she explained to us how how it was going
00:38:13
to to work we feel a little bit more
00:38:15
comfortable because I main concern
00:38:17
really wasn't the the type of work she
00:38:20
was doing those for her safety
00:38:24
once she reassured us that you'd have
00:38:27
somebody accompanying her at all times
00:38:29
the driver bodyguard we feel a little
00:38:31
bit more comfortable I just like to make
00:38:34
a little extra money
00:38:36
I don't think so
00:38:38
[Applause]
00:38:42
if she went into a place in the
00:38:44
atmosphere wasn't right either because
00:38:46
the the people who had been drinking too
00:38:48
much or something they just float up and
00:38:51
leave on Sunday October 27th 1991 Jamie
00:38:57
didn't feel she canceled her bookings
00:39:00
she rented a couple of videotapes she
00:39:03
called a friend that is what we know
00:39:05
about the last night Jamie Santos was
00:39:07
alive a call for help came the next
00:39:13
morning roughly 11:30 a.m. no time send
00:39:17
em once to 1765 Stonehedge court in
00:39:20
Wheeling immediately as a young woman
00:39:22
she's not breathing she's turning blue
00:39:25
paramedics found Jamie in her bedroom
00:39:28
there are obvious signs of a struggle
00:39:30
yet Jamie's head was carefully propped
00:39:32
on a pillow she had not been raped
00:39:37
with no eyewitnesses no fingerprints
00:39:40
nothing that would yield a DNA profile
00:39:42
the only lead was a male voice on the
00:39:45
911 no one in Jamie's family could
00:39:51
identify the caller investigators could
00:39:54
not even determine whether he was the
00:39:56
killer or simply a passerby there's a
00:40:00
possibility the 911 caller could be an
00:40:02
innocent bystander that stumbled upon
00:40:04
this there's evidence of a struggle
00:40:06
possibly somebody could have heard a
00:40:08
struggle possibly somebody could have
00:40:10
seen somebody running from the area and
00:40:12
seen an open door
00:40:18
hello
00:40:22
911 caller could be afraid to come
00:40:25
forward thinking that they'll be accused
00:40:27
of being the killer when in fact you
00:40:30
know they were bystander
00:40:32
[Applause]
00:40:33
however in this perplexing case police
00:40:36
can just as easily envision a scenario
00:40:38
where the 9-1-1 call was made by the
00:40:41
killer himself we don't have evidence
00:40:52
that there was forced entry
00:40:54
so there's a good chance person was an
00:40:56
invited guest
00:41:06
could be a crime of passion it could
00:41:09
have been something that started out
00:41:10
innocently and turned bad it could have
00:41:12
been the domestic type arguments I'm
00:41:17
gonna have to ask you to leave watch
00:41:18
this now don't start with things went
00:41:25
too far and when the person realized
00:41:29
that he had hurt Amy
00:41:31
he had remorse and in that he tried to
00:41:34
in several ways get her help you know he
00:41:37
put a pillow under her head he he made
00:41:39
an honest effort to get a medical help
00:41:41
for further bolstering the theory that
00:41:48
the killer knew Jayme was a certainty
00:41:50
when providing Jamie's address to the
00:41:52
operator send somebody ambling to police
00:41:55
- 1765 stonehedge court and reeling
00:41:58
immediately 1765 stonehenge stone heads
00:42:02
well i like the bush he's familiarity
00:42:05
with the area means that he had been
00:42:07
there either several times before or had
00:42:09
a specific reason to have the knowledge
00:42:12
he did of the address as far as the
00:42:15
numbers in the street and the
00:42:17
pronunciation of the street authorities
00:42:22
believe that if the killer did know
00:42:24
Jamie Sanders there is a strong
00:42:26
likelihood he had set his sights on her
00:42:28
within the world of exotic dancing sexy
00:42:35
perhaps one of Jamie's clients couldn't
00:42:37
take no for an answer perhaps one of her
00:42:40
drivers of the nursing a secret passion
00:42:42
that flared out of control but every
00:42:45
question leads to the same brick wall
00:42:48
nine one one tape is a very important
00:42:51
clue we feel that with the
00:42:52
identification of the voice and this
00:42:54
tape we can resolve this matter I'm
00:42:58
always trying to figure out if I know
00:43:00
the voice if I know who that person is
00:43:05
I'm gonna hear the urgency in his voice
00:43:07
and it just brings up all the emotions I
00:43:10
know what he's seen and I know that I
00:43:14
can't help her I feel that this person
00:43:17
could give us some answer
00:43:19
on this and I can understand why he
00:43:20
doesn't come forward and help us to
00:43:23
relieve some of the pain of Jamie's
00:43:25
death here again is the actual 9-1-1
00:43:30
recording made in October of 1991 if you
00:43:34
recognize the voice contact the leading
00:43:36
Illinois Police Department please listen
00:43:39
closely join me again next time for
00:44:13
another intriguing edition unsolved
