March 09, 2017 / 42:53

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers bank robberies, the disappearance of a woman before 9/11, a realtor's murder, and a lottery win linked to a deceased son.

The episode begins with the violent bank robbery by the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) in Carmichael, California, where a woman named Mna Absol was killed. The SLA's notorious member, Jim Kilgore, evaded capture for nearly 30 years until his arrest in South Africa.

Next, the story of Snaha Phillips unfolds, a doctor who vanished the night before the 9/11 attacks. Her husband, Ron Liberman, recounts the frantic search for her, leading to the conclusion that she likely died helping others during the attacks.

The episode then shifts to the murder of realtor Mike Emert, who was killed by a supposed homebuyer named Steven. The investigation reveals that the murder was likely premeditated, but the motive remains a mystery.

Lastly, the episode features Sam Zelon, who won the lottery after feeling guided by the spirit of his deceased son, Barry. The family reflects on the significance of the numbers drawn and their charitable contributions following the win.

TL;DR

00:02:33
appear to be following a
00:02:35
timetable every word and movement
00:02:38
precise get out it was very well
00:02:42
coordinated everybody had a role and at
00:02:44
all times they were very conscious of
00:02:46
the time ticking 50 at some point some
00:02:50
of the tellers were grabbed one woman
00:02:53
was kicked um so all of them actually
00:02:56
had weapons and it was very very violent
00:02:59
and all the time M opsol was not dead
00:03:01
yet she laid on the ground and she
00:03:03
literally bled to death on the
00:03:05
ground all the bank robbers ran out of
00:03:08
the bank to a car that was waiting for
00:03:11
them the driver of the getaway car was
00:03:14
20-year-old newspaper Aris Patty Hurst
00:03:18
she had been kidnapped by the SLA 14
00:03:20
months earlier within weeks of her
00:03:23
abduction Hurst had assumed the name
00:03:26
Tanya and declared herself a
00:03:28
revolutionary
00:03:32
the search for Patty Hirsch triggered
00:03:34
one of the biggest FBI manhunts in
00:03:36
history within 2 years most SLA members
00:03:39
were either captured or dead but one man
00:03:43
eluded authorities for nearly 30 years
00:03:46
his name was Jim
00:03:49
Kilgore he was born in Portland Oregon
00:03:51
he was vice president of his senior
00:03:53
class he participated in Varsity golf he
00:03:55
was on the high school basketball team
00:03:57
he was very athletic he attended the
00:03:59
University of California Santa Barbara
00:04:01
graduating in 1969 during that time
00:04:03
period he became acquainted with Kathy
00:04:06
soia it was at a drive-in theater in San
00:04:09
Francisco that Jim kilgore's girlfriend
00:04:12
Kathy CIA introduced him to SLA leaders
00:04:15
Bill and Emily
00:04:19
Harris Kilgore and CIA were welcomed
00:04:22
into the group's smaller Inner
00:04:25
Circle Kilgore was especially skilled at
00:04:28
creating false IDs
00:04:30
with the SLA on everyone's most wanted
00:04:32
list he was kept plenty busy we know
00:04:36
that members of this group would steal
00:04:38
credit cards and driver's licenses for
00:04:40
example at local gymnasiums and other
00:04:43
health clubs we know that they engaged
00:04:45
in special missions to steal existing
00:04:49
identifications in the fall of
00:04:52
1974 Thea met at a safe house in a quiet
00:04:56
Sacramento
00:04:57
neighborhood Bill Harris out his plans
00:05:00
to escalate the sla's violent
00:05:04
revolution robbing banks provided the
00:05:06
Quick Cash they needed to carry out
00:05:08
those
00:05:10
plans in late February
00:05:12
1975 SLA members held up the guild
00:05:15
Savings and Loan in
00:05:18
Sacramento the point Man in The Heist
00:05:21
was Jim Kilgore he was a central member
00:05:24
of the group he was not peripheral he
00:05:26
was actively involved in the violence he
00:05:29
embraced it that bank robbery was a
00:05:31
violent act he was right there inside
00:05:32
the
00:05:33
bank two months later Emily Harris
00:05:37
Michael Borton Kathy soia and Jim
00:05:40
Kilgore executed the daring holdup at
00:05:42
Crocker National Bank that's when they
00:05:45
killed Mna Absol a mother of
00:05:48
four it was Emily Harris who fired the
00:05:52
Fatal
00:05:53
blast the robbers stole more than
00:05:57
$155,000 Bill Harris was The Mastermind
00:06:01
behind the heist the SLA changed modes
00:06:04
after killing M opsol they now were
00:06:07
looking to place bombs in locations that
00:06:10
were targeted to kill people they seemed
00:06:12
to be more hungry to take other human
00:06:14
lives and that's what they set out to
00:06:19
do by the summer of
00:06:21
1975 the operation had shifted to San
00:06:24
Francisco where SLA members worked odd
00:06:27
jobs painting houses and their spare
00:06:30
time they planted pipe
00:06:33
bombs then in late August the group
00:06:35
headed for Los Angeles with an arsenal
00:06:38
of deadly explosives in the back of
00:06:40
their
00:06:42
car Jim Kilgore Kathy CIA and Bill
00:06:46
Harris planted a pipe bomb beneath an
00:06:48
LAPD patrol car but the triggering
00:06:52
mechanism
00:06:54
malfunctioned a second bomb was found
00:06:56
under the police car in another Precinct
00:07:01
Harris selia and Kilgore returned to San
00:07:04
Francisco but the heat was
00:07:07
on FBI agents finally got a break the
00:07:10
owner of several apartment buildings
00:07:12
recognized his house painters as SL
00:07:16
members kind of looks like one of the
00:07:18
guys over on the Pacifica
00:07:20
unit within hours Jim Kilgore and the
00:07:23
others were under
00:07:25
surveillance the next morning agents
00:07:28
followed one of the Suspects to their
00:07:30
safe house on pra Avenue and from
00:07:33
watching the pra address they see Bill
00:07:36
Harris and Emily Harris coming out of
00:07:37
the
00:07:38
house when the Harris has returned from
00:07:41
jogging they were confronted by FBI
00:07:45
agents but an hour after that having
00:07:47
identified a second Safe House in San
00:07:49
Francisco agents and members of the San
00:07:52
Francisco Police Department raided a
00:07:54
second location in San Francisco and
00:07:57
during that raid they apprehended had
00:08:00
Hur the high-profile arrests of Patty
00:08:03
Hurst and Bill and Emily Harris made the
00:08:07
headlines meanwhile the FBI closed in on
00:08:10
Kathy CIA and Jim Kilgore who were
00:08:13
painting a house in nearby Pacifica they
00:08:16
raided that house later that afternoon
00:08:19
and when they showed up the house all
00:08:21
the remnants of the painting the buckets
00:08:23
of paint and the paint brushes were just
00:08:24
left drying in the room a radio was on
00:08:27
with a all news station so Leah and
00:08:30
Kilgore had fled but FBI agents located
00:08:33
and searched kilgore's apartment at that
00:08:36
location they found a bully manufactured
00:08:39
bomb similar to the bombs that were
00:08:40
placed under the police cars in Los
00:08:42
Angeles and also up in San Francisco
00:08:45
when they inspected that bomb they found
00:08:47
his fingerprint it was a very good break
00:08:49
for law enforcement because it allowed
00:08:50
us to charge James gilgore with a
00:08:53
serious
00:08:54
offense still no charges had been filed
00:08:57
in the murder of MNA opsol
00:09:00
for 24 years there was no break in the
00:09:03
case then Kathy Celia was arrested in an
00:09:06
upscale Minnesota suburb she had been
00:09:09
living there as a homemaker and
00:09:10
Community activist under the Alias Sarah
00:09:14
Jane
00:09:15
Olsen Olsen was brought to Los Angeles
00:09:18
to stand trial for planning explosives
00:09:20
under a police car in
00:09:22
1975 her testimony and new advances in
00:09:26
forensic science led the Sacramento
00:09:28
District of attorney to reexamine the
00:09:31
opsol murder case the state of the
00:09:33
evidence today has convinced me now is
00:09:36
the time to seek Justice fora Absol SLA
00:09:40
members Bill Harris Emily Harris Michael
00:09:43
Borton Kathy CIA and Jim Kilgore were
00:09:46
all indicted in the case all but Kilgore
00:09:49
were tried for murder the four
00:09:51
defendants were found guilty of second
00:09:53
deegree murder and sentenced Emily
00:09:56
Harris 8 years Bill Harris
00:09:59
7 years Kathy Celia 6 years and Michael
00:10:04
Borton only 6
00:10:06
years the only missing suspect was Jim
00:10:12
Kilgore
00:10:14
update the 28-year hunt for Jim Kilgore
00:10:17
finally ended when he was arrested in
00:10:19
South
00:10:20
Africa Kilgore was married had two
00:10:23
children and was teaching at the
00:10:25
University of Cape Town he was
00:10:28
extradited to the United States and pled
00:10:31
guilty to the second degree murder of
00:10:33
murder opsa Kilgore was sentenced to
00:10:36
only 6 years in prison he was the last
00:10:39
of the SLA to be captured and

00:10:45
tried next did this young doctor die at
00:10:49
the World Trade Center on
00:10:51
911 or did something happen to her the
00:10:54
night
00:10:58
before
00:11:09
immediately following the September 11th
00:11:12
tragedy New York City was blanketed with
00:11:15
posters of missing Lov ones thousands of
00:11:19
distraught family and friends were
00:11:20
searching the city one was Ron
00:11:24
liberman his wife snaha Phillips was a
00:11:28
31-year-old phys pH who had last been
00:11:30
seen in the vicinity of the World Trade
00:11:34
Center the story of this pretty young
00:11:36
doctor is different from the others some
00:11:40
believe that she disappeared on
00:11:42
September 10th 14 hours before the
00:11:45
attack on the Twin
00:11:47
Towers snaha may have been the victim of
00:11:50
a crime or simply left her husband in
00:11:53
family to start a new life I think this
00:11:56
is a very difficult situation because of
00:11:59
the confusion with September 11th that
00:12:01
leaves every single possibility open I
00:12:03
mean in our heads right now Anything is
00:12:07
Possible only one year earlier Ron and
00:12:10
snaha were the happy couple in this
00:12:12
wedding video The Newlywed had an
00:12:15
apartment in Battery Park City an
00:12:18
exclusive neighborhood just four blocks
00:12:21
from the World Trade Center at 11:15
00:12:24
a.m. on September 10th Ron left for his
00:12:27
shift as a doctor at kby hospital snaa
00:12:31
had the next 3 days off hang on second
00:12:35
kissed her I told her I loved her and I
00:12:37
left luckily I left my keys at home so I
00:12:39
went back keys and I got to kiss her
00:12:43
again and that was the last time that I
00:12:45
saw
00:12:46
her snaha was not at home when Ron
00:12:50
returned at 11:15 that night but he was
00:12:53
not
00:12:54
concerned my schedule is so crazy so
00:12:57
sometimes she would feel uncomfortable
00:12:58
staying by herself at home and her
00:13:00
brother lives very close by and her
00:13:02
cousin also lives very close by so she
00:13:04
would sometimes go spend the night with
00:13:05
them and I thought well maybe she just
00:13:07
decided to stop at her brother's
00:13:12
house Ron got up early and headed to
00:13:14
work for an 8:00 a.m. meeting he
00:13:17
expected snaha would call him later that
00:13:19
morning then disaster
00:13:23
[Music]
00:13:24
stru what happened there was an accident
00:13:27
a plane hit the World Trade Center oh my
00:13:29
God after the meeting I came outside and
00:13:31
we saw the TVs were on and we saw the
00:13:33
first plane hit so I immediately went
00:13:35
and called home if you're there pick up
00:13:37
the phone and there was just the message
00:13:40
machine on I need you to call me and let
00:13:43
me know that you're
00:13:44
okay I love you and then we learned that
00:13:47
the second plan hit and now everyone
00:13:49
realized that this is an attack and then
00:13:51
when the Billings came down everyone was
00:13:54
just you know people were crying but
00:13:55
still trying to work and it was a very
00:13:57
very emotional time that call back again
00:14:00
about 10:00 in the morning still just
00:14:02
the messeng machine was on and then
00:14:03
after that the phones went
00:14:05
dead I was frightened for my wife
00:14:07
because I couldn't get in touch with her
00:14:09
I was sad with what happened devastated
00:14:11
by the whole situation there's so many
00:14:13
emotions everyone is in shock and where
00:14:15
is my wife I I don't
00:14:19
know just imagine trying to find your
00:14:21
wife in the chaos of the 9/11 tragedy
00:14:25
there was the devastating possibility
00:14:27
that snaa was buried under tons of
00:14:29
rubble still Ron liberman prayed that
00:14:32
she was simply lost and that she would
00:14:35
soon find her way
00:14:37
home Ron's hopes were based on snaa
00:14:40
having been with either her brother or
00:14:42
cousin the previous night but when he
00:14:45
finally got through to them both said
00:14:47
they had not seen or heard from her in
00:14:50
over 48 Hours realizing that no one had
00:14:53
spoken to her yet I realized that this
00:14:56
is a serious situation at that point I
00:14:59
decided you know I'm going to try to get
00:15:00
down to the apartment all roads into
00:15:02
Lower Manhattan were closed only
00:15:05
emergency vehicles were being permitted
00:15:08
through the barricades Ron hitch the
00:15:10
ride in an
00:15:12
ambulance and then made his way on foot
00:15:15
to their apartment the scene down there
00:15:18
was just chaos it was one of the most
00:15:20
scariest sites I've ever seen in my life
00:15:22
asz I started approaching my apartment
00:15:24
building I started seeing trucks blown
00:15:26
up fire engines turned upside down
00:15:28
pieces of the building or what looked
00:15:29
like the building on the ground
00:15:32
also Ron's apartment in Battery Park was
00:15:35
chained
00:15:37
shut
00:15:39
SN he learned from a neighbor that snaa
00:15:42
was not in the building so now at this
00:15:44
point I didn't know what to do with all
00:15:47
the chaos going on I thought well how am
00:15:49
I going to find her right now and I went
00:15:51
back to my friend's place and I spent
00:15:53
the night and that was a very difficult
00:15:55
night I was by myself on the couch
00:15:58
wondering where my wife was frightened
00:16:00
that something awful
00:16:04
happened the day following the attacks
00:16:07
Ron filed a missing person's Report with
00:16:09
the
00:16:10
NYPD you got the feeling that the police
00:16:12
were just completely overwhelmed and
00:16:14
that they had very little time or effort
00:16:16
to be able to put forth towards this Ron
00:16:19
hired a private investigator who tried
00:16:21
to retrace sn's steps on the night of
00:16:24
September 10th an employee at the
00:16:27
couple's apartment building remembered
00:16:29
seeing snaha that evening hey Tom um I
00:16:32
have aack at 5:15 p.m. he saw her
00:16:35
leaving alone wearing a brown dress and
00:16:39
sandals by tracing credit card receipts
00:16:42
Ron found out that snaa may have gone
00:16:44
shopping at a department store near the
00:16:47
World Trade Center at 7:18 p.m. shoes
00:16:51
lry and bed linens were purchased with
00:16:54
sn's credit card but was it snaa who
00:16:58
used the C or an impostor who had stolen
00:17:02
excuse me from what was purchased it
00:17:04
sounded like it was her sheets for the
00:17:06
beds and things like that so we assumed
00:17:07
it was her uh without proof yet Ron
00:17:11
hoped to find that proof on the
00:17:13
department store surveillance video for
00:17:16
about 2 weeks I sat and watched this
00:17:18
tape for about 5 hours a day frame by
00:17:20
frame it's one of those stop action
00:17:21
photos where I actually found my wife on
00:17:23
the tape shopping
00:17:25
alone but after the department store SN
00:17:29
's trail goes cold she leaves the store
00:17:32
and then she just disappears there is
00:17:34
not a trace of her nothing not a credit
00:17:38
card transaction no money taken out of
00:17:40
her account no emails no phone calls
00:17:43
nothing how does that happen it's it's a
00:17:45
complete
00:17:47
mystery when she left the store snaa was
00:17:50
carrying two large bags of merchandise
00:17:53
but nothing was found at the apartment
00:17:56
suggesting that she never made it back
00:17:58
home
00:18:00
the entire area where snail was last
00:18:02
seen lay in Ruins any theory about what
00:18:07
happened to her was impossible to prove
00:18:10
then a new clue emerged a clerk at the
00:18:14
department start recognized snaa from
00:18:17
the missing person's flyer Ron and sn's
00:18:20
family suddenly had renewed Hope from
00:18:23
the shoe sales clerk told us that she
00:18:25
remembers my wife and that she'd known
00:18:27
her as somewhat of a regular customer is
00:18:29
that your sister oh no she's just a
00:18:32
friend of mine she remembered her there
00:18:34
that day and said that she was with
00:18:35
another person an Indian woman that she
00:18:38
just said was her friend you too okay
00:18:41
bye bye have a good day you too they
00:18:43
said after she went to buy shoes that
00:18:46
they were thinking about going to the
00:18:47
lerie area based on this new information
00:18:51
Ron reexamined the department store
00:18:53
surveillance table two women are seen
00:18:56
leaving the store together this could be
00:18:58
snaa and her
00:19:01
companion hey do you want to get
00:19:02
something to eat so far all efforts to
00:19:05
identify the mysterious woman have
00:19:08
failed we have no idea who this person
00:19:11
is and that she never existed in sn's
00:19:13
past we've gone through her phone books
00:19:15
we've gone through her email there is no
00:19:17
like phone call even made to this person
00:19:20
during that day she doesn't exist
00:19:23
anywhere else it could be very possible
00:19:25
the SN ran into her it could be an
00:19:27
alltime friend
00:19:29
it is possible that snaa stayed at the
00:19:32
unidentified woman's house on the night
00:19:34
of September 10th if that was the case
00:19:37
snaa could have been heading home the
00:19:39
next morning at the time of the World
00:19:41
Trade Center attack if s was near the
00:19:45
World Trade Center on the morning of
00:19:47
September 11th knowing the kind of
00:19:49
person she was it would just be
00:19:50
instinctual with her to try to help and
00:19:53
she might have gone into the building or
00:19:55
she might have helped people out it
00:19:57
would have just been that's the kind of
00:19:58
person she is she just cares about
00:20:00
people if snao was inside the World
00:20:03
Trade Center she would not have survived
00:20:06
but that scenario assumes that sna was
00:20:09
alive the previous night and spent it
00:20:11
somewhere other than with Ron her family
00:20:14
and all of her known friends it's
00:20:18
difficult to continue each day is a day
00:20:20
that we suffer because we don't know you
00:20:21
know sometimes I think she might just
00:20:23
walk through the door or she might just
00:20:25
call but each day doesn't happen and
00:20:28
it's really
00:20:29
[Music]
00:20:31
torture
00:20:33
update initially New York courts ruled
00:20:36
that sn's date of death was September
00:20:38
10th consequently she was not officially
00:20:42
listed as a victim of the 9/11 attacks
00:20:45
however almost 7 years later that
00:20:48
decision was
00:20:49
overturned the courts determined that
00:20:52
snaha most likely died helping injured
00:20:54
people at the World Trade Center just
00:20:57
two blocks from her partner snaha will
00:21:00
be included on the roster of those
00:21:02
killed on 9/11 this is a great comfort
00:21:06
to her
00:21:11
family next a realtor has an appointment
00:21:14
at a secluded house an appointment with
00:21:18
his own
00:21:27
death
00:21:33
wind's top Mike and Mary Beth emert had
00:21:35
it all they were inseparable soulmates
00:21:39
they were also prosperous Partners in
00:21:41
the competitive world of real estate
00:21:44
Mike and I had a terrific relationship
00:21:47
we were not only husband and wife but
00:21:50
each other's best friends and we were
00:21:52
always always on the phone with each
00:21:55
other he was either calling me in her
00:21:57
office or calling me on the cell phone
00:21:59
or something just enjoyed each other's
00:22:02
company we were just very
00:22:04
close but their dream life together was
00:22:07
about to be destroyed just going over
00:22:10
some paperwork what are you doing Mary
00:22:12
Beth had no way of knowing that she was
00:22:14
speaking to Mike for the last
00:22:17
time on the day he was murdered Mike
00:22:20
wrote in his datebook that he planned to
00:22:21
meet a prospective home buyer named
00:22:24
Steven he planned to meet him at 11:30
00:22:26
at a local mall he he told Mary Beth
00:22:29
that Steven was in his 50s carried a
00:22:32
cane and spoke with an East Coast accent
00:22:36
you like so much yesterday so I want
00:22:37
don't you to hop in and we'll get going
00:22:39
all
00:22:42
right Steven was interested in a house
00:22:45
Mike had shown him the previous
00:22:49
day well you were here yesterday so just
00:22:52
you know help yourself you need
00:22:54
anything St by my house at 12:30 p.m.
00:22:57
the owner of house Gail Garland returned
00:23:00
from her job to spend her lunch hour at
00:23:02
home she entered through the garage and
00:23:05
was surprised to find the front door a
00:23:08
jar then she heard the sound of water
00:23:11
running
00:23:13
upstairs a trail of blood still wet LED
00:23:16
toward the
00:23:18
bathroom Mike emmer was dead he had been
00:23:22
stabbed 19
00:23:27
times murder took place in this room and
00:23:30
once the victim was incapacitated he was
00:23:32
obviously dragged down the hallway into
00:23:34
the bathroom where he was placed
00:23:36
investigators believe that Steven the
00:23:38
supposed home buyer committed the brutal
00:23:41
murder they also think Steven shows this
00:23:44
house because it is isolated from most
00:23:46
other homes in the
00:23:48
neighborhood it appears that he may have
00:23:50
reconnoitered and actually singled out
00:23:53
this home as the best place to assault
00:23:56
night now that suggests some
00:23:58
sophisticated criminal thinking going on
00:24:01
police suspect the murder was the work
00:24:02
of a professional Hitman and that the
00:24:05
cane was just the roost I think it's
00:24:08
possible that the weapon was this cane
00:24:11
and the cane might have been one of
00:24:13
these sword canes or a cane with a knife
00:24:15
in it so maybe the initial Blitz assault
00:24:17
the stun mik was striking Mike with the
00:24:20
cane from
00:24:22
behind the knife portion of the can was
00:24:25
used to kill
00:24:26
Mike Mike was nearly 6 ft tall weigh 187
00:24:30
lb I think we have an offender here that
00:24:32
was able to overcome a man of Mike
00:24:34
stature and then drag his body perhaps
00:24:37
about 18 ft from one room to where he
00:24:39
came to
00:24:40
rest the water in the shower was turned
00:24:43
on and the two Faucets in the in the
00:24:47
vanity sinks were found running that to
00:24:50
me speaks of an attempt to get rid of
00:24:52
any trace evidence hair fibers things
00:24:54
like that have been washed down the
00:24:56
drain he's cleaning his hands off and
00:24:57
sink cleaning the weapon off in the sink
00:25:00
this was probably not this individual's
00:25:02
first murder or certainly not his first
00:25:04
violent
00:25:06
assault but if Steven was a professional
00:25:09
Hitman who would have a motive to kill
00:25:12
Mike
00:25:13
emert investigators considered Mike's
00:25:15
wife Maryanne and as business rivals as
00:25:18
possible suspects all were eliminated
00:25:22
they checked Mike's background to see if
00:25:24
he had any enemies who might want him
00:25:26
dead walk condu ing hundreds of
00:25:29
interviews on people we have not
00:25:32
interviewed anybody that can establish
00:25:34
why somebody would want to have Mike
00:25:36
Emer killed he was a great friend he was
00:25:39
a great husband the effects of losing
00:25:42
Mike have just left a huge hole in my
00:25:46
heart I've thought over and over and
00:25:49
over again wrecked my brain trying to
00:25:52
come up with some reason why somebody
00:25:54
would want to harm Mike and there is
00:25:57
nothing
00:25:58
that I can come up with that
00:26:01
would have this make any sense there
00:26:05
must be a reason for someone to want M
00:26:08
eliminated but to this day the case
00:26:10
remains
00:26:12
unsolved if you have any information

00:26:45
ago Sam zelon a yoner businessman had
00:26:49
had a tough life born in laia he was the
00:26:52
only one of his family to survive the
00:26:55
Holocaust and now this

call for an ambulance here Gary no one
00:27:10
who witnessed the car accident would
00:27:12
have imagined that Sam could survive but
00:27:15
he did survive and Sam reported that
00:27:18
during his recuperation something
00:27:20
strange
00:27:22
happened just 5 years before the car
00:27:25
accident his only son Barry died of
00:27:28
cancer a week before his 27th birthday
00:27:32
he was wonderful he loved the family he
00:27:35
was protective and you love this very
00:27:38
much and you love him very much my
00:27:41
brother was the good sheep the spirit of
00:27:44
my family my brother was always trying
00:27:47
to make everybody
00:27:49
happy Barry's family held his memory
00:27:52
close to their hearts then came the day
00:27:55
of Sam's
00:27:57
accident surprisingly Sam came through
00:28:00
with only a sprained neck two broken
00:28:02
ribs and a single cut on his forehead
00:28:05
after 2 weeks in the hospital he was
00:28:08
ready to go home I was laying in bed and
00:28:11
saying my prayer quietly but this time I
00:28:15
felt like an arm touched me and I
00:28:18
stunned at the
00:28:20
moment and as I looked I saw a sh of my
00:28:24
son Parry my
00:28:26
boy Parry
00:28:28
I couldn't believe it I thought he came
00:28:31
back to me I thought God give him a a
00:28:35
new
00:28:37
life Sam just stared taking in the
00:28:40
vision of his dead son the spell was
00:28:44
only broken when another patient began
00:28:46
to talk to Sam about the state lottery
00:28:49
Sam look what day it is today it's it's
00:28:51
the 90 million day look it's what they
00:28:54
call the super lot should it's $90
00:28:57
million today said when Barett
00:29:00
disappeared I thought there was a sign
00:29:03
and I had to play the
00:29:05
ladder
00:29:07
because he moved me towards
00:29:10
it he told me to play in a certain B I
00:29:17
want that afternoon Sam came home from
00:29:20
the hospital his wife and daughters
00:29:22
tried to keep him calm but all Sam cared
00:29:25
about was buying his lottery tickets
00:29:28
when my dad came home from the hospital
00:29:30
he was really insistent that we play the
00:29:31
lotto he had this feeling that my
00:29:33
brother was pushing him to buy a lotto
00:29:35
ticket and he kept telling us you know
00:29:37
let's play Lotto we have to play Lotto
00:29:39
Barry was there this was a sign from
00:29:42
Heaven that we need to play
00:29:44
lot the zelix bought 16 tickets at a
00:29:48
dollar a piece 16 different combinations
00:29:51
of six numbers for a chance to win $90
00:29:55
million Sam's family began to wonder
00:29:59
when we went to buy the lotto tickets
00:30:02
there was a feeling of buying it to
00:30:04
please my father then there was this
00:30:07
other feeling that well maybe something
00:30:10
might come so you never know anything in
00:30:14
life can
00:30:15
happen nobody knows that better than Sam
00:30:19
zelon that evening he made sure his
00:30:22
entire family was gathered around for
00:30:24
the drawing of the winning numbers now
00:30:27
tonight's winning Super Lotto numbers
00:30:29
the first winning number is 46
00:30:33
1946 it was the year that Sam left the
00:30:36

00:31:20
[Applause]
00:31:21
15th when we won my dad smiled like an
00:31:25
angel it was as if he knew know that he
00:31:28
really did see my brother he was so
00:31:31
happy and I've never seen him glow like
00:31:33
that it it was just an inner glow my son
00:31:36
Barry definitely was responsible for
00:31:40
winning the
00:31:41
ladder Barry wanted his father his
00:31:44
mother and his sisters should have a
00:31:47
happy life and to help other people they
00:31:51
cannot be helped because he was that
00:31:53
kind of person
00:31:54
there the odds of Sam's special numbers
00:31:57
winning the lottery worth 13 million to
00:32:00
one eight other people also hit the
00:32:03
jackpot that night each ticket was worth
00:32:06
$10
00:32:08
[Music]
00:32:11
million Sam and his family bought a new
00:32:14
home and they receive payments of
00:32:18
$475,000 each year they've donated a
00:32:21
significant portion of the winnings to
00:32:23
charity to honor the memory of their son
00:32:26
Barry
00:32:29
next her job was to fill ATMs with cash
00:32:32
but one night they were empti and she
00:32:35
disappeared was she the thief or the
00:32:38
victim and later an allout search for a
00:32:42
popular television news Anor who
00:32:44
mysteriously
00:32:56
disappeared Peru
00:32:58
Indiana Cynthia whis Miller's day begins
00:33:01
at 4 a.m. already a grandmother at age
00:33:05
42 Cynthia cares for an extended family
00:33:09
we drank coffee and talked for a while
00:33:12
and she kissed me goodby said she loved
00:33:14
me and she'd see me
00:33:16
later that
00:33:19
was probably the worst day of my life
00:33:22
bye baby Cynthia is a courier for an
00:33:25
armored vehicle service her job is to
00:33:28
replenish ATMs with
00:33:32
cash at 5:50 a.m. cynia begins making
00:33:37
her rounds later that morning she
00:33:39
mysteriously disappears along with a
00:33:42
quarter of a million doll in cash to the
00:33:46
police it seemed like a simple case of
00:33:48
theft by a trusted employee yet it was
00:33:52
possible Cynthia was threatened by
00:33:54
someone unseen someone who then murdered
00:33:59
her the police called it the yet even
00:34:03
they had to admit that Cynthia did not
00:34:05
fit the profile of a criminal her family
00:34:08
never had any doubts they were afraid
00:34:11
that Cynthia was the victim of Foul
00:34:14
Play my mother has taught me that it's
00:34:17
very good to be good you can't take more
00:34:19
than you give she instilled that into us
00:34:21
very early for there even to be
00:34:24
speculation that she would have done
00:34:25
something like this or done anything to
00:34:27
to attempt to take the easy way out it's
00:34:29
just ludicrous there's no way no way in
00:34:32
hell it would have
00:34:33
happened whatever did happened probably
00:34:36
began 3 days before the robbery come on
00:34:40
in Cynthia have a seat Cynthia's
00:34:42
supervisor told her that the security
00:34:44
company had been bought by the Brinks
00:34:46
armored car service Cynthia was to have
00:34:49
a new position there'll be some changes
00:34:52
and I'll fill you in on that next week
00:34:54
but because of time constraints right
00:34:55
now I just want to cover one thing with
00:34:56
you mhm the following workday Cynthia
00:34:59
was to postpone her early morning duties
00:35:02
until 900 a.m. at that time she was to
00:35:05
meet a replacement and acquaint him with
00:35:07
her rout show him your routine etc etc
00:35:10
yeah sure I can do that um so then am I
00:35:13
giving up my job do I have a job as long
00:35:17
as I still have a job you still have a
00:35:20
job the next morning Cynthia got up
00:35:23
early just as she always had she never
00:35:26
mentioned to her boyfriend Billy that
00:35:28
her work schedule had been
00:35:30
changed investigators say that between
00:35:33
5:50 and 7:15 a.m. Cynthia made stops at
00:35:37
each of the eight ATMs on her
00:35:40
route she began 3 hours earlier than she
00:35:43
had been instructed and without her
00:35:46
trainee each of the machines was
00:35:48
completely emptied of cash the ATMs had
00:35:52
video cameras on them out of the 8 ATMs
00:35:56
we only found actual film footage of
00:35:58
Cynthia wismiller on on one of the tapes
00:36:02
and throughout the entire time she was
00:36:03
in that building she was alone it didn't
00:36:05
appear that she was under any type of
00:36:07
duress or force of any kind most of the
00:36:10
ATMs that she serviced were exterior
00:36:13
buildings they were not actually in the
00:36:15
bank branch and she could get into the
00:36:18
back of the ATMs without being seen on
00:36:20
the video camera okay baby John you take
00:36:23
him down to room one please detectives
00:36:25
began their investigation by questioning
00:36:27
Cynthia's family and her boyfriend Billy
00:36:31
Hawkins Billy was adamant that Cynthia
00:36:34
was abducted and he also is adamant that
00:36:37
someone has forced her to do this Billy
00:36:39
told me that there's no way she would
00:36:41
have done this on her own if someone was
00:36:43
holding a gun on her or uh had
00:36:46
threatened her family or something she
00:36:48
would do something like this to protect
00:36:50
her family or to protect her own life
00:36:52
possibly there's nothing else on this
00:36:54
Earth that would make her do something
00:36:55
like this without being coarsed into it
00:36:58
the family held firm to their belief
00:37:00
that she had been forced to steal an
00:37:03
eyewitness supported that idea the
00:37:06
witness said that he saw Cynthia with
00:37:08
another person he saw Cynthia and this
00:37:11
other person unloading bags and putting
00:37:14
them into another vehicle he said this
00:37:16
person had a sock hat pulled down to the
00:37:19
lower part of their face so he could not
00:37:21
tell if this person was white black or
00:37:23
male or female according to the witness
00:37:26
Cynthia did not appear to be helping the
00:37:28
unidentified stranger against her will
00:37:32
if Cynthia was an unwilling accomplice
00:37:35
she could have sent a secret warning to
00:37:37
her company to open an ATM couriers must
00:37:40
enter a code that changes daily a
00:37:43
distress signal is sent by simply
00:37:45
changing one of the digits but Cynthia
00:37:49
did not enter the distress code at any
00:37:51
of her
00:37:54
machines and as the investigation of
00:37:57
Cynthia wismiller went on an audit
00:37:59
revealed an additional
00:38:02
$200,000 was
00:38:03
missing cash that Cynthia was supposed
00:38:06
to have placed in her ATMs more than a
00:38:08
week before the robbery I think she was
00:38:11
dipping in the till a little bit to help
00:38:13
her family out when she was informed
00:38:16
that Brink security was taking over the
00:38:18
company she knew she was going to be
00:38:19
caught when they did the Audits and I
00:38:21
think she just took as much money as she
00:38:23
could and fled the area we as a police
00:38:26
department want to find her because she
00:38:29
stole the money but we also want to find
00:38:30
her to make sure she's safe we don't
00:38:32
believe for a minute she did anything
00:38:33
wrong she just wasn't that kind of
00:38:35
person just wasn't
00:38:38
her
00:38:40
update after 6 years CIA wismiller was
00:38:44
located and arrested investigators
00:38:47
traced phone calls made from family
00:38:49
members to an address nearly 800 M away
00:38:52
in Pon Deon Florida when whis Miller
00:38:56
learned local police were on her Trail
00:38:58
she drove to Indiana and turned herself
00:39:00
into the cooko police department she
00:39:03
repaid almost
00:39:04
$200,000 of the money she had taken she
00:39:08
served only a short
00:39:15
sentence I'm John Shine from kimt
00:39:18
television Mason City Iowa we need your
00:39:21
help one of our news anchors is missing
00:39:23
her name is jod henr jod is 5' 3 in tall
00:39:27
and weighs 120 lb she has blonde hair
00:39:30
and was last heard from around 4:00 a.m.
00:39:33
Tuesday June the
00:39:35
27th jod hen Tru was the anchor of a
00:39:38
Morning News show in Mason City Iowa she
00:39:41
was a local favorite a lovely woman with
00:39:43
many friends and known known enemies on
00:39:46
the day she vanished jod was scheduled
00:39:48
to work a regular ship on
00:39:51
air when she hadn't arrived producer Amy
00:39:54
kons called her
00:39:56
apartment everything sounded normal just
00:39:58
like I had just woken her up what time
00:40:00
is it she asked the question so I told
00:40:01
her Jo it's about 10: to 400 he need to
00:40:03
come in to work how much time is left to
00:40:05
produce on the show I mean she was
00:40:06
obviously thinking she was aware she
00:40:08
just knew she had overslept and she had
00:40:10
to get into work I didn't hear anything
00:40:12
out of the ordinary nothing Jody didn't
00:40:15
show up by airtime so Amy anchored the
00:40:18
6:00 a.m. newscast she then sent the
00:40:21
first available person to check on Jody
00:40:24
I was halfway mad because I had to do
00:40:26
all of this stuff all by myself myself
00:40:28
halfway worried because I thought gez
00:40:29
what if she's laying in her apartment
00:40:30
bleeding cuz she fell down hit her head
00:40:32
on the tub you know things like that but
00:40:34
never once did I think somebody nabbed
00:40:36
her outside of her apartment never once
00:40:38
did that cross my mind the offer
00:40:40
arriving at the scene observed several
00:40:43
J's personal items strung about the
00:40:44
ground around her car a quick check was
00:40:47
done in and around the apartment complex
00:40:49
for Jodie but we were unable to find her
00:40:51
her personal items which appear to be
00:40:53
things that she was bringing with her to
00:40:55
work in preparation for that morning
00:40:57
newscast were scattered about her car
00:41:00
kind of trailing off away from the
00:41:01
vehicle which to all involved is a good
00:41:03
indicator that she was taken
00:41:05
forcely by that afternoon the Mason City
00:41:08
police launched a massive search rescue
00:41:12
teams scoured the countryside divers and
00:41:15
police dogs covered the Winnebago River
00:41:17
and its banks but there was no trace of
00:41:21
Jody in fact the only possible clue was
00:41:24
a white Ford Econoline van much like
00:41:27
this one it was seen in the parking lot
00:41:30
of Jody's apartment building about the
00:41:32
time she
00:41:33
disappeared we spent a lot of time and a
00:41:36
lot of effort talking to the people who
00:41:37
knew jod and spent time with Jody we
00:41:39
located nothing in her private life that
00:41:42
would have put her at risk at all no
00:41:44
Dark Side to jod she was as real and
00:41:47
All-American as she appeared uh to those
00:41:49
who knew her and and to her viewers I
00:41:52
think there's still hope I really feel
00:41:54
that we might find her yet um there's
00:41:57
you can't give up hope that's what gets
00:41:59
you up in the morning if you have any
00:42:01
information about jod who in Tru or any
00:42:04
of the other cases profile tonight
