Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 7, Episode 18 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 48:17

This episode covers the miraculous recovery of Eric Danowsky, the power of prayer in healing, the escape of drug lord Lionel Lujano, and the mysterious deaths of Arnold R. Shambo and Ruby Brew Year.

Eric Danowsky, born with a serious liver disease, underwent two unsuccessful transplants. Doctors doubted he would survive his first birthday. After a public call for prayers, Eric made a remarkable recovery, which his family attributes to the power of prayer.

Kathleen Burghardt faced a potential breast cancer diagnosis but experienced a miraculous healing after intensifying her prayer and meditation efforts. Doctors were astonished to find no lumps during her follow-up exam.

The episode also discusses Lionel Lujano, a drug lord who escaped custody while disguised as a woman. His escape from a Houston hospital raises questions about security and complicity.

Lastly, the tragic case of Arnold R. Shambo and Ruby Brew Year, who disappeared after a car accident, is examined. Their bodies were found months later, raising suspicions of foul play and leaving many unanswered questions.

TL;DR

Eric Danowsky's recovery, the power of prayer, a drug lord's escape, and a mysterious double death are featured in this episode.

00:02:49
over a century ago the poet Alfred Lord
00:02:52
Tennyson wrote more things are wrought
00:02:55
by prayer than this world dreams of but
00:02:58
these days at least when things are
00:03:00
going well it seems that many of us are
00:03:02
almost too busy for prayer it can be
00:03:05
quite different however what our life
00:03:07
hangs in the balance you're about to
00:03:09
meet two people a woman and a little boy
00:03:12
who believe their lives were changed by
00:03:15
prayer
00:03:20
Friday December 1st 1991 fort lauderdale
00:03:23
florida during a follow-up exam 42 year
00:03:30
old kathleen Burghardt is stunned when a
00:03:32
sonogram confirms a large lump in her
00:03:34
right breast
00:03:37
Kathleen's doctors feared the worst
00:03:39
cancer she was directed to come back on
00:03:42
Monday for a biopsy and possible
00:03:44
mastectomy I just went into an absolute
00:03:49
panic I had known two women that were
00:03:53
younger than I that are dead from breast
00:03:56
cancer so I had this anxiety in this
00:04:00
panic about not having breast surgery or
00:04:04
even a biopsy I didn't even want a
00:04:06
biopsy Kathleen had read about the power
00:04:11
of prayer and meditation and done a
00:04:13
little bit of both
00:04:15
but over that weekend she intensified
00:04:17
her efforts I went home and I literally
00:04:23
told everybody to leave me alone that I
00:04:26
was going to concentrate my whole
00:04:27
weekend on healing and that I wasn't
00:04:30
gonna have that surgery on Monday
00:04:33
I put into practice everything that I've
00:04:36
been reading about fasting and went on a
00:04:39
fruit juice and fruit fast and didn't
00:04:42
eat any meat or any other kind of meals
00:04:44
and listened to the tapes and did a lot
00:04:47
of praying got down on my knees and just
00:04:50
really asked God to heal me
00:04:52
[Music]
00:04:57
I didn't hear audible voices but I've
00:05:02
just heard a still small voice in my
00:05:05
head just like you read about in the
00:05:06
books I felt the peace that passes all
00:05:11
understanding I felt very peaceful very
00:05:13
calm very serene the fear went away the
00:05:16
anxiety went away I became very
00:05:21
convinced that I was healed and that
00:05:23
this was totally gone on Monday
00:05:32
Kathleen was x-rayed again just prior to
00:05:34
her biopsy
00:05:39
[Music]
00:05:41
they are are you sure these are her
00:05:43
pictures yes and you didn't take any
00:05:46
other patients pictures No
00:05:50
you go get the doctor
00:05:52
[Music]
00:05:55
we're gonna talk to the doctor
00:05:57
doctor this is what I wanted to show you
00:05:58
the pictures that we took today and the
00:06:01
pictures from Friday what happened here
00:06:04
there are no lumps in her breasts
00:06:08
Kathleen's doctor was dumbfounded he was
00:06:11
cautious and wanted to conduct the
00:06:12
biopsy anyway but Kathleen was adamant
00:06:15
she was going home well I was leaving
00:06:20
the hospital I was getting dressed and I
00:06:22
was telling all the nurses and everybody
00:06:23
I'm out of here I'm gone I'm healed I
00:06:26
said this is an early Christmas present
00:06:28
from God for many years doctors have
00:06:32
called these phenomena spontaneous
00:06:35
remissions and explained it away oh
00:06:38
that's just a spontaneous remission but
00:06:41
what is that this is a healing and we
00:06:44
have to as healers find out how this
00:06:48
happens what are the mechanisms so that
00:06:50
more people can have this experience
00:06:53
[Music]
00:06:56
kathleen has been healthy for more than
00:06:58
three years she continues to meditate
00:07:01
and pray and to go in for regular breast
00:07:03
exams but was she actually helped by the
00:07:06
power of prayer some are skeptical
00:07:11
there's no question that the mind exerts
00:07:13
an influence over what happens in the
00:07:15
body the issue at hand is whether prayer
00:07:20
or any other kind of mental exercise can
00:07:24
predictably influence what happens to a
00:07:27
person and with respect to prayer there
00:07:30
simply is no evidence that it does dr.
00:07:35
Larry Dossey former chief of staff at
00:07:37
Medical City Hospital in Dallas Texas
00:07:39
takes issue with dr. Barrett one of the
00:07:45
best-kept secrets in modern medicine is
00:07:47
the scientific data surrounding prayer
00:07:51
currently there are over a hundred and
00:07:53
thirty studies showing that if you bring
00:07:54
prayer into the laboratory the hospital
00:07:56
or the clinic and you do what we call a
00:07:58
controlled double-blind study the prayer
00:08:04
works the most significant study in the
00:08:08
century I think was done by dr. Randolph
00:08:11
Byrd at the University of California
00:08:12
Medical School in San Francisco it took
00:08:14
place in the coronary care unit almost
00:08:17
400 people were involved they either had
00:08:19
a heart attack or severe chest pain
00:08:21
everybody gets treated with
00:08:23
state-of-the-art coronary care
00:08:24
techniques the difference was that half
00:08:26
the people get prayed for this was a
00:08:28
double-blind study nobody knew who was
00:08:31
and wasn't being prayed for what the
00:08:33
results showed that the prayed for
00:08:35
patients did significantly better they
00:08:37
needed fewer drugs there were fewer
00:08:39
deaths in the prayed for group and
00:08:40
nobody in the prayed for group wound up
00:08:43
on the mechanical ventilator 12 of the
00:08:45
people not being prayed for had to have
00:08:47
this done
00:08:51
many in the medical community find dr.
00:08:53
bird study unconvincing and even as
00:08:56
proponents admit that when it comes to
00:08:58
prayer you cannot adequately monitor a
00:09:00
human control group but sometimes as in
00:09:07
our next story the life of a child can
00:09:09
make scientific studies seem completely
00:09:12
irrelevant
00:09:13
on March 2nd 1988 at Children's Hospital
00:09:17
in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
00:09:19
world-renowned organ transplant
00:09:21
specialist dr. Thomas Starzl worried
00:09:23
over one of his patients an 11 month old
00:09:26
baby boy Eric danowsky who had just
00:09:29
undergone a liver transplant by the time
00:09:33
he had his first transplant in February
00:09:36
of 1988 he was already quite ill his
00:09:42
outlook became progressively work
00:09:45
because worse because the first liver
00:09:47
was rejected necessitating a second one
00:09:51
which was done about eight or nine days
00:09:53
later the second one you know I was like
00:09:56
how much more can his little body take
00:09:58
you know he was so frail says he had
00:10:00
bones sticking out of his back he was so
00:10:02
skinny and had been bedridden for so
00:10:04
long that we were you know he you had
00:10:07
your doubts you know I mean I kept my
00:10:08
faith kept positive attitude but in the
00:10:11
back of your mind there's always that
00:10:12
doubt is he really gonna be able to pull
00:10:13
through all this you know
00:10:16
three weeks after Eric's second
00:10:18
transplant his pairs were put on alert
00:10:20
again dr. Starzl was not optimistic
00:10:25
how's Eric I'm afraid not good Eric has
00:10:30
developed viral pneumonia and I give him
00:10:35
about a 50-50 chance fifty-fifty
00:10:40
well what what can you do for him
00:10:42
there's really nothing more we can do I
00:10:45
think you should prepare yourself for
00:10:48
the worst during the next 48 hours
00:10:54
forty-eight I'm sorry and down inside I
00:10:59
guess I wouldn't accept that you know
00:11:02
but hearing it from such a powerful
00:11:05
doctor who has been through so much and
00:11:07
has seen so much that it was a very
00:11:09
scary thought coming you know a
00:11:13
statement coming from him
00:11:15
[Music]
00:11:19
I didn't want to hear that my son wasn't
00:11:21
going to live there's nothing more the
00:11:25
doctors could do and there was nothing
00:11:27
we could do and the only thing that we
00:11:30
had left was to hope that the Lord would
00:11:33
answer our prayers
00:11:34
[Music]
00:11:38
he said that the next 48 hours are very
00:11:41
crucial that same night Debbie spoke
00:11:43
with Jack greasier a newspaper reporter
00:11:45
who had written several articles about
00:11:47
Eric's medical Odyssey Jack told Debbie
00:11:50
you would write another piece asking his
00:11:52
readers to pray for the boy the article
00:11:57
appeared in the Erie Pennsylvania Daily
00:11:59
Times a few days later immediately
00:12:02
churches all over central Pennsylvania
00:12:04
or inundated with worshippers pray for
00:12:07
little Eric danowsky I felt that heaven
00:12:11
was bombarded that night with prayers
00:12:13
and I really really feel strongly but in
00:12:16
the power of prayer you know and we both
00:12:20
went down to the chaplain you're like
00:12:22
God whatever you have in store for us
00:12:25
just give us the strength to deal with
00:12:28
it whether you you know you want Eric or
00:12:30
whether you're gonna keep them with us
00:12:31
you know we you know we want them with
00:12:33
us but you know and just give us some
00:12:36
strength and we'll deal with what we
00:12:37
have to deal with within a few days it
00:12:43
seems that a miracle was taking place
00:12:46
Eric experienced a sudden and unexpected
00:12:49
turn around less than a week later it
00:12:54
was Eric's first birthday his family and
00:12:57
medical team gathered to celebrate well
00:13:03
I've got some pretty good news for you
00:13:05
folks on this birthday look like Eric
00:13:08
has beaten the virus
00:13:13
that's great I feel in my heart that
00:13:17
Eric's recovery was definitely a miracle
00:13:21
he was just such a very sick little boy
00:13:23
I've had some of the best doctors in the
00:13:26
world
00:13:27
state that medically there was nothing
00:13:30
more that they could do for him it was
00:13:34
the first day that I think I felt like a
00:13:36
really sense of relief that he was gonna
00:13:39
make it did prayer give Eric a booster I
00:13:44
don't know when I when I was young I
00:13:46
would probably have scoffed at the idea
00:13:49
but I've seen things and uncovered
00:13:53
things over the last nearly 40 years
00:13:56
that make me unwilling to be nihilistic
00:13:59
about any possibility and I think that
00:14:03
includes prayer eventually every Kundra
00:14:09
what a third liver transplant this one a
00:14:11
resulting success today Eric is eight
00:14:14
years old and going strong more than
00:14:17
able to keep up with his big brother
00:14:19
[Music]
00:14:20
thankfully Eric was far too young to
00:14:23
remember his ordeal his parents have
00:14:26
told him about it though and he thinks
00:14:28
he understands
00:14:29
[Music]
00:14:33
I found out how so tellers I realized
00:14:38
that um I was really sick and a lot of
00:14:44
people are praying for me I want to make
00:14:47
one thing perfectly clear if you've got
00:14:50
appendicitis you ought to have an
00:14:52
appendectomy
00:14:52
we're not advising people to give up
00:14:55
drugs and surgical procedures and just
00:14:57
wing it with prayer on the other hand
00:15:00
you should feel free while you're doing
00:15:01
that while you're having surgery for
00:15:03
your appendicitis to get prayed for it
00:15:05
too because there are studies which show
00:15:07
literally that prayer increases the
00:15:10
healing rate of surgical wounds so we
00:15:12
ought to do what works I think this just
00:15:14
falls into the category of common sense
00:15:17
[Music]
00:15:18
did prayer help Cathleen Burkhart and
00:15:20
Eric Donnell scheme each of us must
00:15:23
decide for ourselves well / can never
00:15:26
take the place of Medicine it seems to
00:15:29
offer a powerful assist next authorities
00:15:37
need your help to capture a fugitive
00:15:39
drug lord to escape from custody dressed
00:15:41
as a woman August 4th 1994 21 year old
00:15:54
Lionel lugar was arrested in Houston
00:15:56
Texas the culmination of a six-month
00:15:59
sting operation despite is you Louisiana
00:16:02
was a key figure in an international
00:16:04
drug ring that reportedly moved nearly a
00:16:07
quarter of a million dollars in heroin
00:16:09
every month since the tender age of 17
00:16:14
Luciano had enjoyed a Playboy's lavish
00:16:17
lifestyle cars motorcycles expensive
00:16:20
clothes and plenty of girlfriends the
00:16:25
one thing he had never planned on was
00:16:26
serious jail time but with his arrest
00:16:29
for heroin trafficking
00:16:31
Luciano faced the very real possibility
00:16:33
of spending the best years of his life
00:16:35
behind bars
00:16:39
Lionel lluvia however have no intention
00:16:42
of trusting his fate to the legal system
00:16:44
shortly before his arrest he had wrecked
00:16:46
his motorcycle and sustained serious
00:16:48
injuries while Luciano awaited trial
00:16:51
authorities had no choice but to let him
00:16:53
continue his medical treatments outside
00:16:56
of jail in a private facility
00:16:59
[Music]
00:17:01
Luciano is transferred to a guarded room
00:17:04
in Houston's lvj hospital or he would be
00:17:07
shackled to his bed 24 hours a day
00:17:11
Viviano shared room 3b3 with a total
00:17:14
stranger named Vasquez Martinez the
00:17:17
recent victim of an armed robbery a week
00:17:22
passed uneventfully then on October 4th
00:17:25
visitors arrived unannounced three
00:17:30
individuals two women and a man walked
00:17:33
into LBJ Hospital did not have to go
00:17:36
through any security measures as this is
00:17:38
not an institution walked up to the
00:17:41
third floor
00:17:41
Lionel lluvia nose room marking his
00:17:46
place yes they indicated they were going
00:17:51
to visit the individual across the bed
00:17:54
from Lionel Louisiana the guard was in a
00:17:58
position to see them walk over to the
00:17:59
other individuals bed so he felt
00:18:02
comfortable in the fact as with anybody
00:18:03
that they were just visiting the
00:18:05
individual across the bed who was not a
00:18:07
prisoner and he was able to have
00:18:08
visitors at any time of the day on that
00:18:12
day behind the door of room 3 b3 an
00:18:15
incredible escape began to unfold we got
00:18:20
some business take care of
00:18:22
in reality the three visitors were one
00:18:25
of lluvia nose sisters and two other
00:18:27
family members Vasquez Martinez would
00:18:35
soon realize what the three strangers
00:18:36
had in mind believing they were armed
00:18:40
Martinez could only look on and stunned
00:18:42
disbelief
00:18:44
meanwhile Lionel was in the midst of a
00:18:46
total makeover a shave
00:18:48
a simple full cut two-piece crepe suit
00:18:54
then a wig a dash of makeup and the
00:18:57
transformation was complete
00:18:58
[Music]
00:19:06
Lionel lugano was about to make his
00:19:08
escape masquerading as his own sister
00:19:12
the guard outside of the hospital room
00:19:16
was not surprised when he saw two women
00:19:18
and a man leave the room that's what he
00:19:20
had observed walk into the room
00:19:23
[Music]
00:19:24
Le'Veon Oh sister stayed behind with a
00:19:27
concealed gun she kept the bewildered
00:19:29
Vasquez Martinez from sounding the alarm
00:19:31
she would later slip away during the
00:19:34
commotion following the discovery of
00:19:36
Luciano's escape a clever charade had
00:19:42
gone exactly as planned
00:19:45
eventually the Liana's accomplices will
00:19:48
be captured but to this day the

cross-dressing drug lord remains on the

Linna in Ljubljana was looking at
00:20:02
approximately 20 years in prison being
00:20:06
that it being a federal prison he would
00:20:10
approximately do 19 of those years
00:20:13
there's very little good time given and
00:20:15
such like this so I'm sure that this
00:20:17
played quite heavily on his mind his
00:20:19
desire to escape
00:20:21
Lionel lluvia know would a very
00:20:23
extravagant lifestyle when he was free
00:20:26
in the Houston area there's no doubt in
00:20:29
my mind that he is attempting to still
00:20:30
live that type of a lifestyle he's 21
00:20:33
years old and had all the luxuries of an
00:20:35
extremely extravagant individual

Lake Andy South Dakota December 12th
00:20:52
1992 at 6:00 in the morning a car
00:20:55
stopped at a remote intersection at the
00:20:57
edge of the Yankton Sioux Indian
00:20:59
Reservation it was cold
00:21:01
the road was icy all three of the cars
00:21:04
occupants have been drinking
00:21:14
the car jumped the highway and came to
00:21:16
rest in a frozen / ditch the driver of
00:21:25
the car was 20 year old Arnold R Shambo
00:21:29
one of the passengers was his girlfriend
00:21:32
Ruby brew year age 19
00:21:35
the other passenger was Ruby's cousin
00:21:38
17-year old Tracy Dion
00:21:48
by the time help arrived
00:21:50
Tracy was the only person still in the
00:21:52
car for some unexplained reason a reason
00:21:55
Tracy still cannot understand Arnold and
00:21:59
Ruby had apparently just walked away and
00:22:01
abandoned her I was really scared
00:22:05
because GE Ruby's my cousin you know how
00:22:08
can she leave me you know if she got out
00:22:10
how come how come you know she didn't
00:22:12
want to help me out you know i widen
00:22:15
Arnold try to help me get out too you
00:22:17
know
00:22:19
why did Arnold and Ruby leave their best
00:22:22
friend trapped in an overturned car in
00:22:24
the bitter cold for three months there
00:22:27
were no signs whatsoever of the young
00:22:29
couple they had quite literally vanished
00:22:32
into thin air then came the morning of
00:22:38
March 10th 1993 and a tragic discovery
00:22:41
the body of Ruby brew year was found
00:22:44
floating in the ditch the next day
00:22:48
Arnold's body turned up just a few yards
00:22:50
away
00:22:54
[Music]
00:22:57
what could have happened
00:22:59
Arnold our Shambo and Ruby brew year the
00:23:02
area surrounding a ditch have been
00:23:03
repeatedly searched in the weeks after
00:23:05
the accident if the bodies were found
00:23:07
just 75 feet from the crash site in this
00:23:11
incredible and bizarre case every answer
00:23:13
seems to give rise to another disturbing
00:23:15
question and one question in particular
00:23:17
haunts every aspect of the investigation
00:23:20
Arnold R Shambo and Ruby brew year the
00:23:23
victims of foul play Arnold and Ruby
00:23:34
were both Yankton Sioux they grew up
00:23:36
together on the reservation began dating
00:23:39
in high school and soon fell in love
00:23:44
Arnold was a very nice young man he's
00:23:47
never been in any serious trouble of any
00:23:49
kind I pushed him and pushed him and I
00:23:52
got him graduated and he was crowned
00:23:54
king and his senior year you know and
00:23:56
he's at the prom and all this and he was
00:23:58
really popular
00:24:01
Ruby is a real gentle person she's
00:24:04
always laughing you know she's jokes
00:24:06
around she never sitting in harsh words
00:24:09
to us and if she'd done anything wrong
00:24:11
she always told us that she did do
00:24:14
something wrong in 1991 Arnold and Ruby
00:24:19
became parents when their daughter Erika
00:24:21
was born from the start it was a
00:24:24
struggle Arnold and Ruby were still kids
00:24:26
themselves and hardly ready to settle
00:24:28
down on Saturday December 11th 1992 Ruby
00:24:36
Arnold and Tracy embarked on an
00:24:38
all-night party spree at around 6:00 the
00:24:41
next morning they ended up back at
00:24:43
Tracy's house where they had left the
00:24:44
baby
00:24:45
Tracey's father was waiting for them
00:24:50
Arnold hi kids
00:24:54
you kids been drinking pretty hard
00:24:56
tonight huh just a little why'd you guys
00:24:58
leave her here and I'm back later this
00:25:00
afternoon pick her up then all right
00:25:05
okay very careful now okay we left from
00:25:14
there then that's when we came up to
00:25:17
that stop sign that's all I remember is
00:25:20
just him you know us looking and you
00:25:24
know saying there ain't no cars and him
00:25:26
spinning out from the stop sign
00:25:30
and it was just like a snap of a finger
00:25:32
next thing ya know we end up in the
00:25:34
ditch
00:25:41
[Music]
00:25:47
[Music]
00:25:48
we was upside down in the ditch and just
00:25:52
Ruby and I was in the car he no Arnold
00:25:54
wasn't in the car I don't know where he
00:25:57
was
00:25:59
Ruby was crying she was saying oh my god
00:26:02
oh my god she just kept hitting the car
00:26:04
the next thing I know the door you know
00:26:06
it was opened a little ways and she had
00:26:09
enough room where she slid out and then
00:26:13
so I was gonna reach over it and then it
00:26:15
was just like that the door went shut I
00:26:18
[Music]
00:26:25
know if that was me and I had gotten out
00:26:28
I wouldn't have left without trying to
00:26:31
get rid you know why she left I don't
00:26:35
know why Arnold left I don't know if if
00:26:38
they left together I don't know I don't
00:26:41
know why by daybreak the police were
00:26:47
already searching the area even though
00:26:50
the spot where the card come to rest was
00:26:52
frozen solid the authorities feared that
00:26:54
Arnold and Ruby had wandered off and
00:26:56
fallen through the ice at some other
00:26:58
location we walked around the ice part
00:27:02
we had one officer walk on the opposite
00:27:03
side of the railroad tracks thinking
00:27:05
maybe they wandered off toward the lake
00:27:07
area which was also frozen I've been to
00:27:12
a number of accidents where there hasn't
00:27:14
been somebody around the driver hasn't
00:27:16
been there no passengers there and a lot
00:27:19
of times it's because they've been
00:27:20
partying out drinking I mean we do have
00:27:22
a DWI law that was initially my first
00:27:26
thought maybe Arnold was out drinking
00:27:27
and didn't want to get arrested so we
00:27:30
figured he'd show up in a few days I
00:27:35
know he wouldn't hide you know he would
00:27:38
I came home to us
00:27:39
I called us and told us I'm over here
00:27:41
don't worry about me but we never heard
00:27:44
anything from him I thought well gee she
00:27:47
you know she it's not who I could uh um
00:27:49
leave her baby this long so maybe there
00:27:53
is something wrong somewhere or maybe
00:27:54
she's hurt
00:27:55
or she can't get to us you know the
00:27:59
police never found any evidence that
00:28:01
Arnold and Ruby had fallen through the
00:28:03
ice over the next three months
00:28:06
deputy Young strum turned the search
00:28:07
into a personal crusade he worked
00:28:10
tirelessly investigating every possible
00:28:12
lead day after day he came up empty
00:28:16
until the spring thaw
00:28:25
in early March a passing motorist saw a
00:28:28
body in the ditch just 75 feet from the
00:28:30
accident site it was Ruby brew year I
00:28:35
was very shocked the morning that I
00:28:38
received the radio transmission that
00:28:41
they had found a body of course it
00:28:44
wasn't broadcasted any names across but
00:28:47
I knew immediately who they had found it
00:28:50
was either gonna be Ruby Brewer or
00:28:52
Arnold or Shambo her glasses were
00:28:57
missing both shoes were missing her
00:29:00
clothes were intact it appeared to be
00:29:01
the same clothes that she had on the
00:29:03
night of the accident but the body was
00:29:05
very decomposed and it was hard to
00:29:07
recognize and in fact we had to get down
00:29:10
to a look at a tattoo to get a positive
00:29:12
identification on the body at that time
00:29:18
our department decided that we would
00:29:20
start pumping the ditch out at about
00:29:22
noon the next day we found the body of
00:29:24
Arnold submerged in the water about 15
00:29:27
feet away from where we found Ruby
00:29:30
Arnold's body was very well-kept his
00:29:33
skin color was fine he was not frozen to
00:29:37
the ground the clothes were not frozen
00:29:38
to the ground there is a question mark
00:29:40
as far as in our investigation if he
00:29:42
will he was wearing the same clothes
00:29:44
that he was the night of the accident
00:29:49
deputy Jung's tremors completely baffled
00:29:51
how could two bodies found in the same
00:29:54
location be in such different states of
00:29:56
decomposition and how could they end up
00:29:59
in an area that had already been so
00:30:01
thoroughly searched the bodies were
00:30:04
immediately autopsy but the results only
00:30:07
served to deepen the mystery there was
00:30:10
no way of determining the time of death
00:30:12
and there seemed to be no evidence of
00:30:14
foul play
00:30:15
the coroner concluded that Arnold and
00:30:17
Ruby had both died of exposure death by
00:30:22
exposure is kind of a tamiya it's just
00:30:27
like they froze to death
00:30:29
and I cannot actually buy that they may
00:30:33
have froze to death but they didn't
00:30:35
freeze to death at that ditch
00:30:38
that's impossible that they could have
00:30:40
been there the entire three months I
00:30:41
myself personally walk that ditch
00:30:44
several times during that period I've
00:30:47
gotten written out for David's from
00:30:49
people that's also watched walked at
00:30:50
people that had nothing to do with the
00:30:52
case they couldn't have been there they
00:30:56
couldn't been missed
00:30:58
police were further baffled by the
00:31:01
discovery of two items I seemed to
00:31:02
support the theory that Arnold and Ruby
00:31:05
had not died in the ditch on December
00:31:07
12th we found a tuff of hair alongside
00:31:12
the road this hair was later determined
00:31:15
by the forensic laboratory to belong to
00:31:17
Ruby brewer that hair couldn't have
00:31:20
stayed there for three months in my
00:31:23
opinion it was when whoever brought the
00:31:26
bodies back to the ditch that's when
00:31:29
that piece of hair fell off a ruby prior
00:31:32
to being placed back in the ditch area
00:31:36
at the time we pulled Arnold's body from
00:31:39
the ditch I found a set of keys in his
00:31:41
pocket
00:31:42
the keys were a car or vehicle key and
00:31:45
what appeared to be two house keys I
00:31:48
still have these keys in my possession
00:31:50
and to this day I have not found the
00:31:52
vehicle nor the house that these keys
00:31:54
fit soon another startling revelation a
00:32:01
witness claimed to have seen Arnie
00:32:03
accompanied by three other people on New
00:32:05
Year's Eve almost three weeks after he
00:32:08
was reported missing in my mind it is a
00:32:14
very credible sighting she talked to
00:32:16
Arnold knows Arnold personally and was
00:32:20
the doubter and in her mind that it was
00:32:22
Arnold that she was talking to do you
00:32:25
think you were mistaken when you seen on
00:32:28
New Year's Eve authorities brought the
00:32:32
witness in for a polygraph exam she
00:32:35
passed
00:32:35
later the couple she identified as being
00:32:38
in the back seat of the car also
00:32:40
underwent a polygraph they denied being
00:32:44
there but they did fail the polygraph we
00:32:46
questioned those two people thoroughly
00:32:48
afterwards and they held their story
00:32:50
that they were not there that night they
00:32:52
never seen Arnold during or Rubi during
00:32:55
those three months and said that they
00:32:58
were at home that evening
00:33:03
how did the bodies of Arnold our Shambo
00:33:06
and Ruby brew year end up in the very
00:33:08
ditch where they crashed their car three
00:33:10
months earlier a bizarre coincidence an
00:33:13
oversight by the police or perhaps
00:33:16
something far more insidious didn't die
00:33:20
there I had to die someplace else has
00:33:24
somebody had to come and put him back in
00:33:26
or yeah to make it look like that that's
00:33:29
where they died I believe that someone
00:33:34
done that yeah someone killed Arnold I
00:33:36
really do believe that but how I don't
00:33:40
know Ruby and Arnold had a daughter
00:33:44
she's gonna grow up without a mother and
00:33:47
father they were taken from her when she
00:33:51
asked me the question what happened to
00:33:53
my mom and dad I don't want to say I
00:33:55
don't know I want to be able to tell her
00:33:58
what happened
00:34:00
[Music]
00:34:11
time has not dimmed the image al
00:34:14
Henderson and Jean more during happier
00:34:16
days before jeans unexplained
00:34:18
disappearance before Al fell under a
00:34:21
cloud of suspicion during a courtship to
00:34:26
spend some 20 years al built a
00:34:28
multi-million dollar real-estate Empire
00:34:30
Jean rose through the corporate ranks to
00:34:33
become a regional bank escrow officer in
00:34:36
December of 1991 al proposed marriage
00:34:39
and Jean accepted she was very happy and
00:34:44
we were making plans for the wedding she
00:34:49
was just real real happy once she had
00:34:52
decided that it would be okay to marry
00:34:55
me then she got more excited about it
00:34:57
but with each passing day
00:35:01
however jeans engagement did little to
00:35:04
alter her children's opinions of Al
00:35:06
Henderson the longer I knew him the less
00:35:11
genuine he seemed I know he said that he
00:35:14
loved her many times but he also had a
00:35:17
habit of putting her down in front of
00:35:19
other people and to me that just didn't
00:35:21
sound like love when your mother asked
00:35:25
you to be nice to somebody who they
00:35:29
liked
00:35:31
you go along with it even though you've
00:35:34
tried to talk like I did I try to talk
00:35:36
my mom out of being around the guy Jean
00:35:42
more followed her heart a few months
00:35:45
after the proposal she and I'll set out
00:35:47
from their home in Apple Valley
00:35:48
California a vacation at Laughlin Nevada
00:35:51
a scaled-down version of Las Vegas it
00:35:54
was there on April 9th 1992 that al
00:35:57
reported Jean missing no one has seen or
00:36:00
heard from her since today most of those
00:36:06
acquainted with this case are convinced
00:36:08
a jean more met with foul play says Jean
00:36:11
vanished her children simmering
00:36:13
disapproval of Al Henderson has turned
00:36:14
to outright suspicion pitting them
00:36:17
against the man their mother planned to
00:36:18
marry
00:36:19
what follows is al Henderson's account
00:36:22
of jeans last day
00:36:26
it was Thursday April 9th 1992 according
00:36:31
to Al Jean wanted a final chance at her
00:36:33
lucky slot machine before checking out
00:36:35
of their hotel al told us that he
00:36:38
dropped her off at a side entrance of a
00:36:40
nearby casino and went to find a parking
00:36:42
place when I did not find one then I
00:36:47
returned to the valet parking thank you
00:36:51
got the ticket went inside the casino
00:36:56
where Jean was waiting for me there's a
00:36:58
claim check for the car our plan was
00:37:00
that we would meet back at our hotel
00:37:02
room at a quarter of 12:00 al claims he
00:37:08
left Jean and the casino at around 9:30
00:37:10
a.m. once outside he planned to flag
00:37:13
down a taxi and return to their hotel
00:37:16
there was no cab there so after waiting
00:37:20
a couple of minutes and a cab didn't
00:37:21
come I thought well it would be nice I
00:37:23
could go play the slots with her a
00:37:26
little bit but I found Jesus a bird slot
00:37:32
machine already in use I felt well
00:37:36
because someone was there playing it she
00:37:37
may have decided to go shopping or some
00:37:41
other thing
00:37:42
[Music]
00:37:46
from a quarter of 10 to 10:15 I played
00:37:53
the machine that she liked and hoping
00:37:55
this she would come back and I would be
00:37:57
able to give up and just say here's your
00:38:00
machine have fun
00:38:04
[Music]
00:38:09
12:15 p.m. still believing that nothing
00:38:15
was wrong al returned to the hotel and
00:38:17
checked out he then took a cab back to
00:38:20
the casino to find Jean when I saw that
00:38:24
the car was right where it had been left
00:38:27
and spoke to the valet nobody had
00:38:31
brought a ticket for the car then I
00:38:34
began to become alarmed al says he
00:38:38
thoroughly searched the lobby the shops
00:38:40
in the gaming area Jean Moore is nowhere
00:38:44
to be found over the next few days al
00:38:49
questioned dozens of people and
00:38:51
distributed thousands of these flyers in
00:38:53
the Laughlin area despite the offer of a
00:38:56
$25,000 reward not one helpful call was
00:39:00
received after a certain amount of time
00:39:04
I had to figure that something terrible
00:39:10
has happened
00:39:12
geeze children reached the same
00:39:15
conclusion but they are convinced that
00:39:17
al Henderson knows more about genes fate
00:39:19
than he has admitted the more we find
00:39:24
out about what supposedly happened as
00:39:28
compared to what can be verified the
00:39:30
less I'm inclined to believe that he's
00:39:33
telling the full truth in my opinion
00:39:37
that I all have nots that everything
00:39:40
that had happened then the reason I say
00:39:44
that is because number one the story has
00:39:46
changed a couple of times in his
00:39:50
original statement to police el
00:39:52
Henderson insisted repeatedly that he
00:39:54
dropped gene off in front of the casino
00:39:56
and gave her the valet ticket there but
00:40:00
I'll told us that he left gene at a side
00:40:03
entrance and gave her the ticket inside
00:40:05
the casino other details made G's uneasy
00:40:12
for starters Genoud left most of her
00:40:15
jewelry in the hotel room it seemed very
00:40:18
odd to me that she had left her
00:40:21
engagement ring that she was so proud of
00:40:22
I thought it was very strange she was
00:40:26
not one to go out without her purse or
00:40:28
without her jewelry he's within a couple
00:40:31
of days hour within the day you know I I
00:40:34
knew that he was involved or I in my
00:40:38
heart I know he was involved when I got
00:40:40
off the plane when I flew into bullhead
00:40:43
which is across the river I had the
00:40:45
first place I went to us at the police
00:40:47
station
00:40:47
I asked then if there was anything on my
00:40:51
mother and I let them know my feelings
00:40:54
on what had happened
00:40:58
l had given police precise details about
00:41:01
his last morning with Jean authorities
00:41:04
turned up an impartial witness that
00:41:06
could validate his account a network of
00:41:08
surveillance cameras monitoring
00:41:10
virtually every square inch of the
00:41:12
casino 24 hours a day al henderson says
00:41:19
he pulled into the valet area at around
00:41:21
9:15 a.m. surveillance tapes confirmed
00:41:25
the arrival of Al's Cadillac that
00:41:27
morning cameras in the lab he also
00:41:32
recorded Al's entry into the casino
00:41:34
beyond this point Al and the
00:41:37
surveillance footage seemed to disagree
00:41:40
this tape shows two views of the area
00:41:43
where Al said he gave the valet ticket
00:41:45
to Jean additional cameras should have
00:41:48
picked up glimpses of Jean as she moved
00:41:50
about the casino I have reviewed four of
00:41:54
those tapes of the areas that mr.
00:41:57
Henderson said that they were in and the
00:42:00
tapes that I have reviewed the
00:42:02
surveillance tapes that I have reviewed
00:42:03
we do not see Jeanne and any of those
00:42:06
tapes I can't really comment on that I
00:42:10
can only tell you what happened I accept
00:42:14
no responsibility for what their tapes
00:42:17
show or don't show because I am NOT an
00:42:20
expert in that field I can just tell you
00:42:22
what happened
00:42:24
eles assertion that he played jeans
00:42:26
lucky slot machine should also have been
00:42:29
backed up by the cameras in examining
00:42:34
the tapes for the time frame I'll give
00:42:36
us 9:45 to approximately 10:15 the
00:42:40
machines that he told security was her
00:42:43
favorite machine we do not see how
00:42:45
playing those machines well the only
00:42:48
response to that is that he was
00:42:50
evidently looking at the tape of the
00:42:52
wrong machine I have checked with the
00:42:55
surveillance personnel for the hotel and
00:42:59
they have advised me that this is the
00:43:01
group of machines that al Henderson told
00:43:04
the security personnel was Jeannie's
00:43:06
favorite machine and asked if they would
00:43:09
make a copy of them for him he was
00:43:13
instructed they could not do that that
00:43:14
they would turn him over to the police
00:43:15
so these are the surveillance tapes for
00:43:18
the machines al told security with her
00:43:20
favorite machine
00:43:25
investigators began to wonder if gene
00:43:27
had been in Laughlin at all eventually
00:43:30
they found a waitress would served Allen
00:43:32
gene on Monday April 6th the day they
00:43:35
arrived
00:43:37
other than the coffee shop we have
00:43:39
nobody seeing Jeannie in the Laughlin
00:43:42
area the question remained
00:43:47
where was gene more between the Monday
00:43:50
sighting and a Thursday report that she
00:43:52
was missing a few weeks later a witness
00:43:54
came forward with a possible answer a
00:43:58
friend of Jesus made the stunning claim
00:44:01
that she saw the couple 150 miles away
00:44:04
from Laughlin at a gas station in their
00:44:06
hometown of Apple Valley when April 8
00:44:10
4:30 p.m. the day before gene was
00:44:13
reported missing we have witnessed
00:44:17
remembered the time because they were in
00:44:19
route to a school function and it would
00:44:22
been only at that time and pinpointed
00:44:25
the time and date I've provided several
00:44:32
people with copies of my telephone log
00:44:35
from call us a showing that I made a
00:44:39
call from Laughlin to the Victorville
00:44:43
area at a little bit after 3:00 on that
00:44:48
day I had another call I think it was at
00:44:51
6:59 on that day so you've got less than
00:44:56
four hours and it's physically
00:44:58
impossible even if all you did was drive
00:45:01
from Laughlin and turn around and go
00:45:03
back you can't do it in less than six
00:45:05
hours phone records verify the calls
00:45:09
were made from Laughlin on Wednesday as
00:45:11
henderson says furthermore Al's
00:45:14
bookkeeper told us that he called her
00:45:16
from Laughlin that same Wednesday
00:45:18
evening and so we discussed various
00:45:21
things and then he says well just a
00:45:23
minute Jeannie wants to say hi too so
00:45:26
Jeannie got on the phone and she was
00:45:29
just happier than happy could be because
00:45:33
she had run into a stroke of luck
00:45:36
one of the poker machines less than 24
00:45:41
hours later gene more would be reported
00:45:43
missing since then
00:45:45
precious little his surface to suggest
00:45:47
she will ever return the riddle of gene
00:45:52
Moore's disappearance reportedly from a
00:45:54
busy casino and broad daylight as defied
00:45:57
explanation as all henderson know more
00:45:59
about genes fate than he has
00:46:01
acknowledged there is he's something of
00:46:03
a victim himself burdened with false
00:46:05
accusations during a time of crushing
00:46:07
personal loss unequivocally I had
00:46:11
nothing to do with the disappearance
00:46:13
I've seen more I had offered the $25,000
00:46:18
reward I think that my net worth has
00:46:22
gone down from around two and a half
00:46:24
million to 1 million if I could get her
00:46:27
back I'd get the whole 1 million I would
00:46:29
do anything to get her back
