Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 4, Episode 11

March 09, 2017 / 42:50

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five cases: the murder of Joan Jefferies, the fate of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a restaurant rivalry leading to murder, a haunted boy, and a hired killer.

The first case focuses on Joan Jefferies, who was shot in a parking lot in Webster, Texas. Her family believes her business partner, Sam Patel, is responsible. Patel denies the accusations, claiming he had no motive, while Joan's daughter, Kelley Walker, argues that Patel wanted to silence her mother before she could sever ties with him.

The second segment discusses the legendary outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, who are believed to have died in Bolivia. However, some theorize that Butch Cassidy may have returned to the U.S. under the name William Thaddeus Phillips, with evidence suggesting he lived a normal life after the supposed shootout.

Next, the episode recounts a deadly feud between restaurant owners TK Harty and John Mooney in Athens, Georgia. After Harty evicts Mooney, he is shot and killed. Mooney is implicated in the murder after a hitman reveals details about the crime.

The final case features Michael Jones, a young boy in Manchester, Connecticut, who claims to see ghosts, including his deceased grandfather. Despite multiple exorcisms, the hauntings continue, leading his family to seek help from paranormal investigators.

TL;DR

This episode covers a murder case, legendary outlaws, a restaurant feud, a haunted boy, and a hired killer.

Can an exorcism save?
00:00:47
Five compelling cases.
00:00:49
Some just waiting to be solved and maybe, you hold the key.
00:00:53
I'm Dennis Farina and this is Unsolved Mysteries.
00:01:34
Webster, Texas.
00:01:37
This much is known.
00:01:39
Joan Jefferies died alone and scared in a suburban parking
00:01:43
lot.
00:01:51
The killer shot her twice in the head at close range.
00:01:56
Then he fired two more times.
00:02:01
Both bullets pierced her heart.
00:02:07
No one has ever been charged with the murder
00:02:09
of Joan Jefferies.
00:02:11
But her family is sure they know exactly who killed her.
00:02:14
A former business partner named Sam Patel.
00:02:18
I did not kill Joan.
00:02:20
I had no reason to kill Joan.
00:02:21
I had no reason whatsoever.
00:02:24
Hey, Sam.
00:02:25
Hey Joan.
00:02:26
DENNIS FARINA: Joan was a clerk at an aerospace firm
00:02:28
in Houston.
00:02:29
Sam Patel also worked there as a software engineer.
00:02:34
But he had much bigger plans.
00:02:37
We'll talk about a new business
00:02:38
I'm getting involved in.
00:02:39
DENNIS FARINA: The company would be called Best Aviation.
00:02:43
A commuter airline for gamblers.
00:02:46
But a few investors, but I think I'll
00:02:47
need you for public relations.
00:02:49
KELLEY WALKER: When Sam initially offered this position
00:02:51
to my mother, she was, of course flattered and excited
00:02:57
because the money was very good.
00:03:00
At this file, I have set up for all correspondence.
00:03:03
DENNIS FARINA: Patel hired Joan to help start the company.
00:03:06
She was also on its board of directors.
00:03:08
Come to it any time you can find.
00:03:10
DENNIS FARINA: Though Patel was married,
00:03:11
he and Joan often met at the home of his girlfriend.
00:03:15
RICHIE GUYOTE: Sam had arranged marriage.
00:03:19
He had told me that he could not get a divorce.
00:03:22
And so we lived as boyfriend and girlfriend.
00:03:25
Thank you.
00:03:26
You guys made me think of it.
00:03:28
DENNIS FARINA: Patel told Joan that overseas investors
00:03:31
would be funding Best Aviation within a few months.
00:03:35
Meanwhile, he wanted to get life insurance for the company's
00:03:38
key employees.
00:03:40
Joan herself was insured for a quarter of a million dollars.
00:03:44
SAM PATEL: The initial idea was presented
00:03:46
from the investor group because they wanted assurances.
00:03:50
That if something happened to one of the key people
00:03:53
in the organization, that the company could function
00:03:55
and that they would recover their investment.
00:03:57
Basically she's a secretary and I can't
00:04:01
see that as a key point person.
00:04:02
It just didn't-- nothing sounded right about that.
00:04:06
DENNIS FARINA: Patel agreed to pay Joan a monthly salary.
00:04:10
But in the next seven months, she received only
00:04:13
one check and that one bounced.
00:04:17
Sam, I want out.
00:04:19
Why, Joan?
00:04:20
Because there's no money, Sam.
00:04:21
No, there's money.
00:04:22
DENNIS FARINA: Kelley claims that her mother
00:04:24
wanted to quit but Patel convinced her to stay.
00:04:27
It's all right.
00:04:28
Just be honest with me.
00:04:29
SAM PATEL: Joan never approached me and said that she
00:04:31
wanted to leave the business.
00:04:33
There was a time when she said, "Hey,
00:04:35
look this isn't working out and I don't like it."
00:04:37
She did come up and say that and the compromise
00:04:39
we had come up with was fine.
00:04:40
You can continue to be part time until you feel comfortable
00:04:44
and we'll go out and get somebody
00:04:46
else to work part time also.
00:04:48
OK?
00:04:49
All right, please.
00:04:50
All right.
00:04:51
DENNIS FARINA: But by then, Joan's back wages
00:04:53
totalled close to $4,000.
00:04:57
Two weeks later, Patel showed up at her apartment,
00:05:00
late at night.
00:05:04
You'll never believe what he just did.
00:05:07
He brought the check.
00:05:08
You have it?
00:05:09
Well no, I don't have it.
00:05:10
He had to take it out and get a copy.
00:05:13
KELLEY WALKER: She said that he had to go get
00:05:15
this certified check xeroxed.
00:05:19
Which was odd to her and me.
00:05:23
Sam?
00:05:24
Hi.
00:05:25
Look Joan, I tried, but I just couldn't find a Xerox machine.
00:05:28
And I don't have a car, so I need to use the phone, please.
00:05:30
DENNIS FARINA: Patel told Joan that if he couldn't get a ride,
00:05:33
that she should take him home.
00:05:35
So I can get a ride home.
00:05:36
Kelley, I've got to go.
00:05:38
KELLEY WALKER: When she told me that he mentioned getting
00:05:41
into her car, that I think was the firmest I
00:05:44
have ever been with my mother.
00:05:46
Saying over and over, "Absolutely not,
00:05:50
do not ever let him in your car."
00:05:55
Someone at the door, Kelley.
00:05:56
DENNIS FARINA: According to Kelley,
00:05:58
Patel showed up a third time.
00:06:01
Oh Kelley, it's Sam.
00:06:04
Look Sam, it's getting late.
00:06:05
Go away.
00:06:07
I'll see you at work tomorrow.
00:06:08
DENNIS FARINA: Patel says Kelley is wrong.
00:06:11
SAM PATEL: I never met Joan like that in the manner
00:06:14
that Kelley had described to the police, never ever.
00:06:19
KELLEY WALKER: I truly believe it was a trial run.
00:06:22
And I think because I was on the phone
00:06:25
and my mother continued to say, "Kelley, it's Sam."
00:06:28
I stopped it that night.
00:06:32
DENNIS FARINA: Two weeks later, after a business
00:06:34
dinner with Sam Patel, Joan Jefferies was murdered.
00:06:41
Joan told Kelley that she planned to meet Patel
00:06:44
and his wife Penny for dinner.
00:06:46
Joan expected to get a check for her back wages.
00:06:50
She also planned to hand over the company's files
00:06:53
and sever her ties with Best Aviation.
00:06:57
- So, how you doing? - Fine.
00:06:59
Where's Penny?
00:06:59
I thought Penny was supposed to be here.
00:07:01
Sorry, she didn't show up because she had to work late,
00:07:03
but I'm here.
00:07:05
DENNIS FARINA: Patel insists that Joan
00:07:07
was not planning to quit.
00:07:10
How about you?
00:07:11
A Diet Coke.
00:07:12
OK.
00:07:12
SAM PATEL: I asked Joan to meet with me,
00:07:14
"I can give you the check, you can give me files.
00:07:16
We can arrange for our meeting with the investor group
00:07:19
for you to be there."
00:07:20
And that was the purpose of the meeting.
00:07:24
Guess what I have for you.
00:07:25
I've got you your check.
00:07:27
Is it good?
00:07:28
It will be in a few days.
00:07:29
See, the money's being transferred.
00:07:30
DENNIS FARINA: Patel and Joan left the restaurant
00:07:32
together at about 10:00 PM.
00:07:36
But Joan never made it home.
00:07:42
I tried.
00:07:43
The best I can tell, a couple of shots to the head,
00:07:46
another couple through the chest.
00:07:47
DENNIS FARINA: By 9:00 AM, detectives
00:07:48
were at the crime scene trying to piece
00:07:50
together what happened.
00:07:51
I saw this. Can you see that over there?
00:07:53
Not close.
00:07:54
DENNIS FARINA: Joan's purse and keys were missing,
00:07:56
but she was still wearing her gold and diamond necklace.
00:08:00
Robbery did not seem to be the motive.
00:08:03
DET. CHARLES PROPST: Because of the multiple gunshot wounds
00:08:05
to the body, it would indicate that the offender
00:08:08
is known to the victim or had a grudge
00:08:11
or something of that nature.
00:08:14
Could you account for your whereabouts right
00:08:16
after leaving the restaurant? What happened?
00:08:17
What were your actions?
00:08:19
Yeah.
00:08:19
We walked out in the parking lot.
00:08:21
I spoke to her for 15, 20 minutes in the parking lot.
00:08:23
I walked to her car and she went home
00:08:25
and I went to my girlfriend's house.
00:08:27
At any time, were you in her car?
00:08:28
No sir.
00:08:29
I was never in her car.
00:08:30
- Are you sure about that? - Yes, sir.
00:08:31
I'm positive.
00:08:32
I've never been in her car and I was not in the car last night.
00:08:35
DET. CHARLES PROPST: The first interview
00:08:36
that we had with Sam Patel, he told us that he had not
00:08:39
been in Joan Jefferies' car.
00:08:41
Later in a second interview, he changed his story
00:08:45
and said that he had in fact been in Joan's car
00:08:48
and that we would find evidence of such in her car.
00:08:52
Can you account for your movements
00:08:53
after leaving the restaurant?
00:08:55
Yes.
00:08:56
When I went to my girlfriend's house,
00:08:58
I rode the bicycle for a few minutes.
00:08:59
You rode the bicycle?
00:09:01
Yeah.
00:09:02
From cul-de-sac for a few minutes.
00:09:03
I guess your girlfriend will back you up on that.
00:09:05
- She sure can. - What's her name?
00:09:06
RICHIE GUYOTE: I opened the door and Sam was there with a shirt
00:09:10
wrapped around his neck.
00:09:13
And I said, "You know, what are you doing without your shirt
00:09:15
on?
00:09:16
It's cold out there, you're going to catch a cold."
00:09:19
And he said, "I've been riding my bicycle."
00:09:22
SAM PATEL: I was hot, you know.
00:09:23
I hadn't ridden a bike and done any exercise
00:09:26
in months and months.
00:09:27
And you know, I was going into the house.
00:09:29
I took my shirt off and I had it over me
00:09:31
and I was walking into the house.
00:09:33
RICHIE GUYOTE: And that shirt has never been found.
00:09:36
I think it's a very crucial piece of evidence
00:09:39
because he would have had to reach across Joan to take
00:09:43
the keys out and that shirt would have had a smear
00:09:47
of blood all up the arm.
00:09:49
SAM PATEL: There's no blood stains on it
00:09:51
I have it in my closet and if whoever
00:09:54
wants it, if the Webster police department would
00:09:56
send me a real nice note saying, "Please, could
00:09:58
we have the shirt?"
00:09:59
I would be glad to hand over the shirt to them.
00:10:03
DENNIS FARINA: Investigators say that Patel
00:10:05
has never been willing to give them that shirt.
00:10:08
For Joan's family, Patel's refusal is just one more sign
00:10:13
that he pulled the trigger.
00:10:16
KELLEY WALKER: I think Sam is responsible for the murder
00:10:19
of my mother because he had a life insurance policy
00:10:24
out on her life for $250,000.
00:10:28
She was ending her business relationship
00:10:31
with him that night.
00:10:32
So he needed to do it that night while she
00:10:35
was still an employee.
00:10:38
DENNIS FARINA: Patel insists that this accusation
00:10:41
is completely groundless.
00:10:43
SAM PATEL: The very next day after her death, the board
00:10:45
of directors all got together and we decided that we would
00:10:49
take the entire proceeds from the insurance and A,
00:10:53
either give it to the family, B, donated to some local charity
00:10:57
that would leave a lasting memorial for Joan
00:11:00
or a combination of both.
00:11:02
DENNIS FARINA: The case of the killing of Joan Jefferies
00:11:05
is still open.
00:11:07
If you have any information about her murder,
00:11:10
please log on to our website at Unsolved.com.
00:11:16
Next, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
00:11:19
Did they really die in a shootout in South America?
00:11:32
Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Alonzo Longabaugh.
00:11:36
In the late 1800s, these two men became
00:11:40
the legendary outlaws known as Butch
00:11:43
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
00:11:52
Paul Newman and Robert Redford starred in the celebrated film
00:11:56
about their final days.
00:12:04
The movie, like history, tells us that Butch and Sundance died
00:12:07
in a shootout in South America, but some believe that Hollywood
00:12:11
and history may be wrong.
00:12:14
There is some evidence that Butch
00:12:16
Cassidy returned to the United States
00:12:18
and died of natural causes.
00:12:22
Do this right or we're going to run over to the fee.
00:12:26
DENNIS FARINA: Two years after Butch and Sundance were
00:12:28
supposedly killed, a man named William Thaddeus
00:12:32
Phillips arrived in Spokane.
00:12:35
He opened a successful machine shop
00:12:37
and became a very prominent businessman.
00:12:41
Looking good, looking good.
00:12:43
DENNIS FARINA: But only, Phillips
00:12:45
was a man without a past.
00:12:48
JAMES DULLENTY: The first definitive record
00:12:50
of William Phillips was his marriage certificate,
00:12:53
dated May 14, 1988.
00:12:55
There is no other previous record of William Phillips.
00:12:59
In the 1920s, about 1922, the first reports
00:13:03
began circulating in the West that Butch
00:13:05
Cassidy had returned.
00:13:07
People began to say that Butch Cassidy was William Phillips.
00:13:12
DENNIS FARINA: Some see a resemblance
00:13:13
between William Thaddeus Phillips
00:13:15
and George Butch Cassidy.
00:13:17
But if Phillips was Cassidy, then how did
00:13:21
the outlaw escape from Bolivia?
00:13:24
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:13:26
DENNIS FARINA: According to some historians,
00:13:28
the account of how Butch and Sundance died
00:13:31
can be credited to one man, Percy Seibert.
00:13:35
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:13:38
DENNIS FARINA: Seibert had worked with the outlaws
00:13:40
at a tin mine in Bolivia and became very friendly with them.
00:13:44
Percy was the one who identified the two
00:13:46
men killed in the shootout as Butch and Sundance.
00:13:50
But Seibert may have deliberately lied.
00:13:54
[SPEAKING SPANISH]
00:13:58
LARRY POINTER: I believe that Percy told the story of Butch
00:14:01
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's death in Bolivia
00:14:05
to pay back what he felt was a debt of loyalty and friendship,
00:14:08
to allow these outlaws to begin a life
00:14:11
under amnesty without a past.
00:14:15
DENNIS FARINA: Larry Pointer is convinced
00:14:16
that Butch Cassidy took on the identity of William Phillips.
00:14:21
As Phillips, he returned to the Wyoming mountains
00:14:24
where Butch and his outlaw gang had once roamed.
00:14:28
JAMES DULLENTY: We know of a man who went with Phillips
00:14:30
to Wyoming in 1933.
00:14:32
This man died recently, but we have interviewed him.
00:14:36
He was there all summer with Phillips
00:14:39
and he met all the old timers that Phillips met,
00:14:42
and in almost every case, these old timers
00:14:46
accepted Phillips as Cassidy.
00:14:48
But old timer stories are always the most interesting
00:14:52
and the least reliable.
00:14:54
DENNIS FARINA: Author Dan Buck has researched the life
00:14:57
and death of Butch Cassidy and is convinced that William
00:15:01
Phillips was an imposter.
00:15:05
DAN BUCK: The William Phillips story
00:15:06
is chock full of old timer tales,
00:15:08
people would claim they were good friends with Cassidy
00:15:10
and knew Phillips was Cassidy.
00:15:12
And usually it's when asked by someone, when prompted
00:15:15
by someone, "Well you were a good friend of Butch
00:15:18
Cassidy's, weren't you?"
00:15:19
And of course, the answer is yes.
00:15:21
Who wants to say no?
00:15:23
DENNIS FARINA: In Wyoming, Phillips met
00:15:25
a woman named Mary Boyd Rhodes.
00:15:29
In 1934, Mary and her 16-year-old granddaughter Ione,
00:15:34
rode out to Phillips' campsite.
00:15:36
IONE MANNING: The man that my grandmother
00:15:37
met that day was going by the name of William Phillips
00:15:41
and she knew him by the name of Leroy George Parker
00:15:46
who is known as Butch Cassidy.
00:15:50
Mary Boyd.
00:15:51
IONE MANNING: He recognized her immediately
00:15:53
and she recognized him.
00:15:55
Oh, George Parker.
00:15:58
IONE MANNING: I sensed that they had a relationship that I had
00:16:01
never known much about, so my grandmother
00:16:05
had finally told me that he was her childhood sweetheart.
00:16:09
DENNIS FARINA: Three years later, Phillips
00:16:11
mailed this ring to Mary.
00:16:13
It was engraved, "George C. to Mary B."
00:16:19
William Phillips died soon afterwards.
00:16:22
DAN BUCK: I believe William Phillips
00:16:24
pretended to be Butch Cassidy because he was having fun.
00:16:27
He traveled out to the West.
00:16:29
He met some people.
00:16:31
He probably got some free beers.
00:16:33
He certainly got a lot of adventures out of it.
00:16:35
DENNIS FARINA: But several other clues
00:16:37
do suggest that Butch and Phillips were one and the same.
00:16:42
Phillips wrote a manuscript called "The Bandit Invincible:
00:16:46
The Story of Butch Cassidy."
00:16:48
It contained specific details about Butch's adventures.
00:16:54
JAMES DULLENTY: Though there's material in that manuscript
00:16:56
that no one else knew, that had never been published,
00:16:59
that either the man who wrote it had to have intimate knowledge
00:17:03
of Cassidy, or he was Cassidy.
00:17:08
DENNIS FARINA: Phillips owned this six- shot Colt revolver.
00:17:11
Carved into the pistol grip is a unique brand.
00:17:15
LARRY POINTER: That brand was the reverse E
00:17:17
box E. That was Butch Cassidy's brand in the 1890s.
00:17:23
DENNIS FARINA: The passing of a century
00:17:25
has turned these two outlaws into legends, if not, heroes.
00:17:31
And we don't like our heroes to die.
00:17:34
There seems to be at least some evidence that Butch Cassidy
00:17:38
may have survived the shootout.
00:17:41
But it was almost certainly the end of the road
00:17:45
for the Sundance Kid.
00:17:51
Next, a feud between two restaurant owners
00:17:54
ends in murder.
00:18:09
TK Harty's Saloon was a popular bar
00:18:12
and restaurant that attracted the university
00:18:15
crowd in Athens, Georgia.
00:18:18
The saloon's owner was TK Harty.
00:18:20
He rented space and a large complex
00:18:23
of restaurants and shops.
00:18:25
LEE EPTING: TK Harty was an obnoxious Yankee.
00:18:28
When you first met him, he came on really strong.
00:18:31
And when he came to town, it took me a little while
00:18:34
to get used to him so that I would even
00:18:36
want to have him as a tenant. - Hey, pretty good.
00:18:38
How you doing?
00:18:38
Pretty good.
00:18:39
LEE EPTING: When you got to know TK,
00:18:41
he was just a real teddy bear, just a really nice guy.
00:18:44
He was enthusiastic about the complex and doing it right.
00:18:50
DENNIS FARINA: Harty's rival was a man
00:18:52
named John Mooney who also leased
00:18:54
space in the same complex.
00:18:56
His restaurant was called Somebody's Pizza.
00:19:00
Mooney and TK Harty never really got
00:19:03
along because both men were trying
00:19:05
to attract the same customers.
00:19:09
LEE EPTING: When John Mooney came to town,
00:19:11
he was the preppy, out of college, a cool guy.
00:19:15
And that lasted until he got the lease sign and got the place.
00:19:20
Then John kind of got greedy.
00:19:22
Hey, come see us next door.
00:19:23
Nickel beer, Somebody's Pizza.
00:19:25
Come to Somebody's Pizza right next door, good deal on beer.
00:19:28
LEE EPTING: And John started wanting to infringe
00:19:31
on everybody else's business.
00:19:32
His idea was to go up to TK's, pass out
00:19:36
flyers on the deck for Nickel beer
00:19:38
and draw TK's crowd down to his place.
00:19:42
What do you think you're doing here?
00:19:44
Hey, what does it look like?
00:19:45
LEE EPTING: That just went all over TK.
00:19:47
I mean, he couldn't stand that.
00:19:48
That was the last straw.
00:19:50
I'll tell you what this is.
00:19:51
This is private property.
00:19:53
I want you out of here, right now.
00:19:55
All right.
00:19:56
LEE EPTING: John Mooney and TK Harty despise each other.
00:19:59
They really had gotten to the point
00:20:01
that there was no reconciliation between the two people.
00:20:08
After three years of feuding, TK Harty
00:20:11
finally got the upper hand.
00:20:13
He was able to lease the entire complex
00:20:16
and evict John Mooney from his restaurant.
00:20:20
After that, their feud escalated into a full scale war.
00:20:28
This is your eviction notice.
00:20:30
Eviction notice?
00:20:31
This is your eviction notice.
00:20:32
You're out of here.
00:20:36
DENNIS FARINA: 10 days later, TK arrived home
00:20:38
in the early morning hours after closing
00:20:41
up his saloon for the night.
00:20:44
Someone was hiding in the shadows of his kitchen,
00:20:48
watching him.
00:20:50
When TK went into a study, the man followed.
00:20:57
Then he shot TK once, in the head.
00:21:00
[GUNSHOT]
00:21:01
TK died instantly.
00:21:08
Just have a seat there [INAUDIBLE]..
00:21:10
DENNIS FARINA: Four hours after TK's body was found,
00:21:13
police picked up Mooney for questioning.
00:21:16
John, do you know why you're here tonight?
00:21:18
Well, I guess it's about the shooting of TK Harty.
00:21:23
Yeah.
00:21:24
How did you know about the shooting?
00:21:26
KENNETH KILGORE: I told him that we had not released
00:21:29
that information, and that nobody knew
00:21:31
that except the police department and the people
00:21:34
that were investigating this murder that he had been killed
00:21:37
or how he had been killed.
00:21:40
At that time, he did become nervous.
00:21:42
He said, "I think I need to talk to my lawyer."
00:21:45
All right.
00:21:46
Thanks, bye.
00:21:48
Hold on a sec.
00:21:49
Sit down.
00:21:51
KENNETH KILGORE: When he hung up the phone,
00:21:53
he said, "My lawyer said for me to get up and walk
00:21:55
out if I wasn't under arrest."
00:21:57
I'm going to allow you to leave.
00:21:59
I want to tell you something before you go.
00:22:01
DENNIS FARINA: At the time, police
00:22:02
did not have enough evidence to arrest Mooney.
00:22:05
You're my man.
00:22:06
Go ahead.
00:22:09
DENNIS FARINA: After three weeks,
00:22:10
they were still at a dead end.
00:22:14
And then, the police got a lucky break.
00:22:17
Another restaurant manager called with a bizarre story.
00:22:21
He said he was cleaning up behind the bar
00:22:24
one night when an Atlanta electrician,
00:22:27
named Elmo Florence, offered him his services as a hit man.
00:22:33
You're a what?
00:22:34
I'm a hit man.
00:22:35
[LAUGHS]
00:22:36
You don't need to call New Jersey
00:22:37
if you want somebody good.
00:22:38
Give me a call.
00:22:40
RESTAURANT MANAGER: Elmo was bragging to me about the fact
00:22:43
that he was a hit man and that his services were for hire.
00:22:46
At first, I thought he was kidding me.
00:22:48
They did murder TK Harty and then we started to go on
00:22:53
and you know, I said, "All right,
00:22:55
how'd you get in the house?"
00:22:57
Piece of cake.
00:22:58
Busted at the glass.
00:23:01
[GLASS SHATTERING]
00:23:03
KENNETH KILGORE: Elmo Florence began
00:23:04
to describe the inside of the house,
00:23:06
where the murder took place.
00:23:08
He began to tell the point of entry, what type of weapon
00:23:12
was used to kill Ted Harty.
00:23:14
He told where the bullet entered the head and where it exited.
00:23:18
Basically, in the statement that we received from the manager
00:23:22
of the restaurant, there were 21 different points that we
00:23:26
had not released to the public.
00:23:30
We knew at that time that we had a very hot suspect here.
00:23:35
Mr. Florence?
00:23:36
Yeah.
00:23:37
Camouflage?
00:23:38
That's right.
00:23:39
You're under arrest.
00:23:40
DENNIS FARINA: Florence had told the restaurant
00:23:41
manager that John Mooney hired Florence to kill TK.
00:23:47
But when the police went to arrest Mooney,
00:23:49
they couldn't find him because he left the country.
00:23:55
A few weeks later, police were tipped off
00:23:57
that Mooney had returned to the States
00:23:59
and was staying at a friend's apartment.
00:24:02
They went there and approached two men who were
00:24:05
drinking in the parking lot.
00:24:07
MAJ. LEE MOSS: When I saw the two individuals drinking beer,
00:24:10
this gave me a perfect out.
00:24:12
I figured to approach them from this angle.
00:24:15
All your cans here kind of upset me.
00:24:17
All this litter.
00:24:18
DENNIS FARINA: Officer Moss recognized one of the men
00:24:21
as John Mooney.
00:24:23
I'll tell you what.
00:24:25
Put your hands on the car.
00:24:27
DENNIS FARINA: Mooney was arrested
00:24:28
and charged with murder.
00:24:30
Among his belongings, police found
00:24:32
several incriminating notes that he jotted to himself.
00:24:37
JOHN MOONEY (VOIVEOVER): See Elmo--
00:24:39
Offer to him if worse comes to worse to take the whole rap
00:24:42
and say robbery was the motive.
00:24:44
We have agreement for me to take care of his wife and family.
00:24:47
[GUNSHOT]
00:24:48
DENNIS FARINA: Elmo Florence's trial lasted only one week.
00:24:52
He was sentenced to life at a maximum security
00:24:54
prison in Georgia.
00:24:57
John Mooney was also sentenced to life
00:25:00
but he ended up in a minimum security facility.
00:25:04
After six months, prison officials gave Mooney
00:25:07
the job of kitchen clerk.
00:25:09
Now, he had access to areas that most prisoners did not.
00:25:14
How's the count today? Pretty good?
00:25:15
245.
00:25:16
245.
00:25:17
CALVIN GREEN: John Mooney was what you call an ideal inmate.
00:25:19
He didn't complain about the rules and regulations.
00:25:22
He just worked hard and he gained the confidence
00:25:25
of the staff and myself.
00:25:28
Now we say, he was a con artist and he has gotten us all.
00:25:32
DENNIS FARINA: After serving only
00:25:34
19 months of his life sentence, John Mooney
00:25:37
engineered his escape.
00:25:39
When the prisoners went back inside,
00:25:41
and the guard locked the gate and walked away,
00:25:44
Mooney made his break.
00:25:50
A getaway car was waiting.
00:25:53
As Mooney ran to it, he threw off his uniform piece by piece.
00:25:58
[CAR ENGINE WHIRRING]
00:26:00
Two hours later, prison officials realized
00:26:02
that Mooney was missing.
00:26:04
But by then, it was too late.
00:26:06
Mooney had made his escape.
00:26:08
HARRY GORDON: Without the actions of Mooney
00:26:10
and actually hiring somebody to take another person's life,
00:26:13
TK Harty, would be here today.
00:26:16
Unless John Henry Mooney is captured,
00:26:18
he got away with murder.
00:26:21
DENNIS FARINA: Update.
00:26:23
Within just minutes of our broadcast,
00:26:26
two viewers reported that John Mooney was living
00:26:30
in this house in Scottsdale, Arizona
00:26:33
under the name Robert J. Kelly.
00:26:37
He was immediately arrested.
00:26:39
Mooney had been enrolled at Arizona State University
00:26:43
and was working as an accountant.
00:26:45
He was married and had a one-year-old son.
00:26:49
John Mooney was returned to prison in Georgia.
00:26:52
He served his time and has been released.
00:26:58
Next, a young boy says that his house is haunted.
00:27:02
Even after an exorcism, the ghosts remain.
00:27:07
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC]
00:27:16
Manchester, Connecticut.
00:27:20
The Jones family says the haunting
00:27:22
started without any warning.
00:27:24
[SCREAMING]
00:27:28
DENICE JONES: I ran upstairs.
00:27:30
Michael!
00:27:31
DENICE JONES: I thought maybe he had cut himself.
00:27:32
I really didn't know.
00:27:34
[WHIMPERING]
00:27:36
Michael?
00:27:37
DENICE JONES: And there was Michael, just
00:27:39
curled up like he was a fetus.
00:27:42
I mean, he was just frightened and shaking
00:27:44
and crying hysterically.
00:27:45
Something I've never seen him do.
00:27:48
DENNIS FARINA: Michael Jones told his mother Denice
00:27:50
that he had seen a man in his room,
00:27:54
but it was not an ordinary man.
00:27:57
MICHAEL JONES: He was standing in front of me
00:27:58
and he reached out to me and he was smiling
00:28:02
and then he just disappeared.
00:28:04
He touched my shoulder.
00:28:06
MICHAEL JONES: He was white like the crayon color white.
00:28:09
He said he was a ghost.
00:28:10
DENICE JONES: I thought, maybe something
00:28:12
was wrong with Michael.
00:28:13
I can't say I didn't believe in ghosts.
00:28:15
I just never experienced something,
00:28:18
so I never thought it would happen to us.
00:28:23
DENNIS FARINA: Soon after Michael
00:28:24
saw the ghost in his room, he was with his family
00:28:27
visiting his grandmother.
00:28:30
DENICE JONES: I was in the kitchen
00:28:31
talking with my parents, when Michael
00:28:34
started screaming again.
00:28:35
- Mom! - What?
00:28:36
RICHARD PIERCE: He says, "That's the man, that's the man!"
00:28:38
I said, "Michael, what is the man?"
00:28:41
He says, "That man up on the wall in the picture.
00:28:43
That's the man I see."
00:28:46
MICHAEL JONES: I saw the picture and I got scared because that
00:28:50
was the man that I saw.
00:28:53
DENICE JONES: The man in the picture,
00:28:54
Michael was pointing to, was my grandfather who had passed
00:28:57
away when I was 10 years old.
00:28:58
Michael had never met him.
00:29:00
DENNIS FARINA: It was the first time
00:29:02
that Michael had ever seen a picture
00:29:04
of his great grandfather.
00:29:07
MICHAEL JONES: I felt safer that it wasn't like a bad person
00:29:10
that was going to hurt me.
00:29:11
And my mom said not to be afraid of him
00:29:13
because he was a good man and she
00:29:15
said not to be afraid of ghost because it can't harm me.
00:29:19
DENNIS FARINA: Denice had no idea what to do.
00:29:22
Her son kept saying that he was being visited
00:29:25
by her grandfather's ghost.
00:29:27
And to make matters worse, Michael now
00:29:29
said that evil spirits were also invading their home.
00:29:35
DENICE JONES: And I asked him what
00:29:37
these things wanted from him and I told him to talk to grandpa.
00:29:41
Grandpa will protect him.
00:29:42
Grandpa said that some of the bad people
00:29:44
want me on your side.
00:29:46
MICHAEL JONES: When I talk to my grandpa,
00:29:48
he just said that there was a lot of ghosts in our house.
00:29:51
They are after me.
00:29:53
And there's a lot of bad ones and good ones
00:29:55
and they're all fighting with each other.
00:29:58
DENNIS FARINA: Denice says that she
00:29:59
took Michael for dozens of medical tests,
00:30:02
hoping to get some answers.
00:30:05
DENICE JONES: They all say it's not medical.
00:30:07
They realize it's very bizarre, that Michael is a ghost boy.
00:30:12
He sees ghosts and there's nothing medically they can do.
00:30:17
DENNIS FARINA: Feeling desperate,
00:30:19
Denice asked a paranormal specialist to examine
00:30:22
both Michael and her home.
00:30:25
JOHN ZAFFIS: It's very important to be
00:30:26
able to go in and determine that it is something supernatural
00:30:29
that is occurring in the home.
00:30:31
DENNIS FARINA: John Zaffis has been
00:30:32
a paranormal investigator for 26 years
00:30:36
and he has studied dozens of similar cases.
00:30:39
He spent many, many hours with Michael,
00:30:42
researching Michael's sightings firsthand.
00:30:46
JOHN ZAFFIS: We usually have to go
00:30:48
through all types of different evaluations,
00:30:51
psychological, physical.
00:30:53
I really would like it documented and known
00:30:56
that there isn't anything physically
00:30:57
or mentally wrong with these people
00:30:59
that are going through this.
00:31:01
DENNIS FARINA: Michael's psychological profile also
00:31:04
showed nothing unusual, but his drawings of a ghost
00:31:08
he calls "The Black Shadow Man", told another story.
00:31:13
MICHAEL JONES: Every day, I feel, it's
00:31:16
not really the same "Shadow Man",
00:31:18
just like a bunch of different ones.
00:31:20
I don't know why I see ghosts or why this is happening to me.
00:31:25
DENNIS FARINA: Zaffis learned that when Michael was born,
00:31:27
his heart stopped 26 times.
00:31:31
JOHN ZAFFIS: My explanation is that he
00:31:33
had near-death experiences.
00:31:35
I believe since birth, he's had that ability where that door
00:31:39
has been open for the spirit to be able to communicate
00:31:42
back and forth with him.
00:31:44
And I think it is at the point where
00:31:47
it is trying very, very hard to be able to totally
00:31:51
take Michael over.
00:31:53
DENNIS FARINA: Dennis was concerned that the bad spirits
00:31:56
might be winning.
00:31:58
DENICE JONES: One time, me and my husband were downstairs,
00:32:01
when all of a sudden, we were listening to banging upstairs.
00:32:05
We heard him scream and we heard
00:32:07
a thumping, so we ran upstairs.
00:32:11
BRUCE JONES: And Michael was on his bed
00:32:13
like a little boy, scared.
00:32:14
His bed was shaking up and down.
00:32:16
MICHAEL JONES: The bed started shaking a lot
00:32:17
and it lifted up like three inches
00:32:21
and I just yell at my mom.
00:32:23
Mom!
00:32:24
Oh my god.
00:32:27
MICHAEL JONES: And then it dropped and stopped shaking.
00:32:30
KENNY JONES: We all ran out of the house
00:32:32
because we needed to get a break from the house.
00:32:35
Because it's very scary in there.
00:32:37
DENNIS FARINA: Michael now said that the evil spirits
00:32:40
were physically tormenting him.
00:32:42
[SCREAMING]
00:32:43
MICHAEL JONES: Everything started getting worse
00:32:45
and they started hitting me and scratching me and poking me,
00:32:48
and it hurt.
00:32:49
JOHN ZAFFIS: Usually, when there's
00:32:51
a physical manifestation, scratches, bite marks,
00:32:55
this is definitely a sign that something
00:32:57
is either attached to that individual
00:32:59
or it has some way gained access.
00:33:03
And at that point is where it could be very, very
00:33:06
vulnerable, where that person could
00:33:07
go completely under possession.
00:33:10
DENNIS FARINA: To protect their son from the intruders,
00:33:13
then he sold their home and moved the family across town.
00:33:18
But the new house was no better.
00:33:22
DENICE JONES: I was on the phone with my mother.
00:33:23
Michael was sitting right next to me, watching TV.
00:33:27
When all of a sudden, he started screaming.
00:33:29
- Ah! - What?
00:33:30
KENNY JONES: We just looked at my brother
00:33:32
and he just felt like a scrape, going all the way up his arm
00:33:36
and like it was drawing blood.
00:33:38
Michael!
00:33:40
MICHAEL JONES: I felt a sharp pain like a knife,
00:33:42
but it hurt really bad.
00:33:45
DENICE JONES: After this incident,
00:33:47
we needed someone who dealt with this.
00:33:49
And I was able to find the bishop who
00:33:52
agreed to give me the exorcism.
00:33:54
DENNIS FARINA: Denice felt that an exorcism was
00:33:57
the only way to save Michael.
00:34:01
DENICE JONES: They started performing
00:34:02
an exorcism in Latin.
00:34:04
[SPEAKING LATIN]
00:34:06
DENICE JONES: I could tell there was
00:34:07
something wrong with Michael.
00:34:09
He kept looking to one side of the church.
00:34:12
[SPEAKING LATIN]
00:34:15
MICHAEL JONES: And I saw the "Shadow Man"
00:34:17
in the front, left corner room of the church.
00:34:20
I could see his whole body and his feet
00:34:23
and he was just standing.
00:34:25
And he was all black.
00:34:26
And my stomach started burning and I told the priest.
00:34:30
And he gave me Holy water and said, "Drink this."
00:34:36
BRUCE JONES: I was praying to God that it
00:34:37
was going to work and help.
00:34:39
And that Michael might be granted some relief.
00:34:42
Although, we were told it might not be the end all.
00:34:45
It might have to be repeated.
00:34:46
There may need to be a house exorcism.
00:34:48
And they were right because about three weeks later,
00:34:52
it all began again.
00:34:54
DENNIS FARINA: Over the next few years,
00:34:56
Michael underwent four exorcisms and his family
00:35:00
moved eight times, but the improvement
00:35:03
was always temporary.
00:35:06
DENICE JONES: We just live one day at a time.
00:35:09
It hurts when I see my son going through this.
00:35:12
I don't know what to do.
00:35:16
JOHN ZAFFIS: Do I see a brighter future
00:35:17
for Michael and the family?
00:35:19
Absolutely.
00:35:20
There's many of families that go through this
00:35:23
and it's very difficult. And it's
00:35:24
like the old saying goes, "It's always
00:35:26
the darkest before the dawn."
00:35:28
Pretty much everything's been hard for me,
00:35:32
so everything that's happened has been hard.
00:35:35
And I'm getting used to it.
00:35:40
DENNIS FARINA: Next, a hired farm
00:35:42
hand turns out to be a killer.
00:35:52
CALLER: It's the same height, same build.
00:35:54
He's a big guy and he's a hot tempered guy.
00:35:56
This is the guy, man.
00:35:57
I'm telling you, this is the guy.
00:35:59
DENNIS FARINA: This call to our phone center led to the arrest
00:36:02
of an accused killer.
00:36:03
He'd been on the run for more than a
00:36:05
year, hiding behind half a dozen aliases.
00:36:09
You may remember him as David Freeman.
00:36:14
Freeman was hired as a handy man by a Pennsylvania farmer,
00:36:18
named Tim Good.
00:36:20
Freeman considered himself something of a preacher.
00:36:23
And he used his sermons to slowly
00:36:25
gain control over Tim Good.
00:36:29
So I was wondering, I'm going to be
00:36:32
leading the Bible study up at the house, later this evening.
00:36:35
Thought you might like to come up and check it out.
00:36:37
But what time?
00:36:38
DENNIS FARINA: Tim became a believer.
00:36:40
When he sold his farm for a million dollar profit
00:36:43
and moved to West Virginia, Freeman followed.
00:36:48
Hey Tim, how about when you're done with that,
00:36:50
clear some more of that land over by the fence.
00:36:52
DENNIS FARINA: Within a few years,
00:36:54
the role reversal was complete.
00:36:57
Once you get some of that wood over there for kindling.
00:36:58
DENNIS FARINA: Freeman gave the orders.
00:37:00
Tim obeyed him.
00:37:01
But clear as much as you can.
00:37:03
You know the Lord says, the man that doesn't work, doesn't eat.
00:37:07
Please bless this food.
00:37:08
DENNIS FARINA: Tim became a prisoner in his own home.
00:37:11
He lived in a basement cell while Freeman and his family
00:37:16
live comfortably upstairs.
00:37:18
J.B. ARMSTRONG: He indicated what chores Timothy
00:37:20
Good was to perform that day.
00:37:22
Even indicated what Timothy Good was to eat
00:37:24
that day, if he was allowed to eat that day.
00:37:27
Every aspect of Timothy Good's life
00:37:30
was controlled by Dave Freeman.
00:37:32
I'm studying, man, like you told me to do.
00:37:34
Is that what I told you to do?
00:37:35
Is there anything else I told you to do, Tim?
00:37:37
DENNIS FARINA: Police believe that Freeman
00:37:39
eventually strangled him and left his body in the basement.
00:37:44
Yesterday.
00:37:44
Yesterday?
00:37:50
DENNIS FARINA: Investigators discovered the badly
00:37:52
decomposed body, months later.
00:37:58
By then, Tim's million-dollar bank account
00:38:01
had been reduced to $2.00.
00:38:03
And Freeman was long gone.
00:38:08
Update.
00:38:11
CALLER: I'll take you right to the guy.
00:38:12
The guy rip me off in the first place.
00:38:14
He got me for like over 1,000 more
00:38:15
than what he told me he was going to get.
00:38:16
And then he got all upset because I got upset because.
00:38:18
DENNIS FARINA: The viewer who called
00:38:19
said that he knew Freeman as George Jelks, an auto mechanic.
00:38:24
J.B. ARMSTRONG: When I realized that it was a valid tip,
00:38:26
I was pretty excited.
00:38:27
I've been chasing this subject for a year and a half.
00:38:30
And once I finally knew that he was within grasp,
00:38:33
it was almost too good to be true.
00:38:36
DENNIS FARINA: Within hours, police
00:38:38
staked out Jelks' apartment.
00:38:41
WILLIAM SCHOEB: When he came out of the house,
00:38:43
we could tell that this was a suspect match description.
00:38:48
DENNIS FARINA: Four children were in the apartment,
00:38:50
so police waited for Jelks to leave.
00:38:52
And then, they made their move.
00:38:56
[DOG BARKING]
00:38:57
After he was arrested, police discovered
00:38:59
that Jelks' real name was William David Cooper.
00:39:04
He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter
00:39:06
and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
00:39:14
We recently told you about a vicious armed robber who left
00:39:18
his victim severely disabled.
00:39:21
But thanks to our viewers tip, this robber is now in custody.
00:39:28
DENNIS FARINA: Richmond, Virginia.
00:39:32
Shortly after midnight at a McDonald's restaurant,
00:39:35
assistant manager Mark Klavuhn and truck driver Perry Duncan
00:39:40
were unloading supplies.
00:39:42
Mark had recently moved to the area with his wife
00:39:46
and three children.
00:39:48
You guys got two more after this.
00:39:50
Two more and then we can go.
00:39:53
DENNIS FARINA: Four other employees
00:39:54
were in the basement store.
00:39:59
Hey!
00:40:01
Now, we're going to go inside and open up the safe.
00:40:06
Don't shoot.
00:40:07
Hey, send some more napkins down here, later.
00:40:10
[GUNSHOT]
00:40:15
Hey, Mark, are you all right?
00:40:17
[ALARM RINGING]
00:40:21
No, no!
00:40:26
DENNIS FARINA: Mark Klavuhn was shot once in the forehead
00:40:29
at point blank range.
00:40:32
He didn't die, but he will never be the same.
00:40:37
ROBERT EAST: He suffered some severe brain damage
00:40:39
and paralysis on the left side.
00:40:41
He has regained use, partial use, of his left leg,
00:40:45
but he has no use of his left arm at all.
00:40:47
And no matter what happens, as far as apprehending these two
00:40:51
individuals, it cannot outweigh the suffering that
00:40:54
this family is going to go through
00:40:55
for the rest of their lives.
00:40:58
DENNIS FARINA: Police learned that the gunmen had fled
00:41:00
on foot and that later, they tried
00:41:02
to steal a car from a woman in a nearby residential area.
00:41:07
ROBERT EAST: So she just arrived home,
00:41:09
and they attempted to accost her and take
00:41:11
her keys away from her.
00:41:13
They were identified by her as wearing
00:41:15
the same type of clothing as the situation at the restaurant.
00:41:19
She was able to get away from them and run into the house.
00:41:23
DENNIS FARINA: The next morning, police
00:41:24
made a surprising discovery, only a few
00:41:27
yards from the woman's house.
00:41:30
The robbers had left behind their ski masks and gloves,
00:41:34
as well as a 357 revolver.
00:41:39
The weapon was traced to a convicted murderer named
00:41:42
Michael Anthony Starr, who had been paroled from a Virginia
00:41:46
prison only the year before.
00:41:50
Update.
00:41:52
Thanks to a viewer tip, police arrested Michael Anthony Starr.
00:41:58
He was convicted of attempted robbery
00:42:00
and two weapons violations.
00:42:02
He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.
00:42:06
He served his time and has been released.
