Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 7, Episode 6

March 09, 2017 / 42:47

This episode of "Unsolved Mysteries" covers four cases: the death of Andre Jones after a traffic stop, the murder of Terry McClure, the manhunt for fugitive Antonio Castro, and the disappearance of Charles Southern linked to a religious cult.

The first case involves Andre Jones, an 18-year-old who was arrested in Jackson, Mississippi. His parents received a call about his arrest, but later learned he was found dead in a jail shower. His family believes he was murdered, citing inconsistencies in the police report.

Next, the episode discusses Terry McClure, who was murdered on her son Tim's wedding day. Tim became a suspect due to circumstantial evidence, including a canceled credit card and a life insurance policy taken out shortly before her death. Despite passing a polygraph, he was arrested but not prosecuted.

The third case features Antonio Castro, a fugitive involved in violent crimes. After a traffic stop, he fled into the wilderness, evading one of the largest manhunts in Northern California history. Authorities fear he may commit further violence.

Lastly, Charles Southern, a teacher involved in a religious cult led by Terry Hoffman, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. His family found disturbing evidence in his home, including notes and a vial of a powerful drug, raising suspicions about Hoffman's influence.

TL;DR

Four cases: Andre Jones's suspicious death, Terry McClure's murder, Antonio Castro's manhunt, and Charles Southern's disappearance linked to a cult.

DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Next on "Unsolved Mysteries",
00:00:07
It seemed like a routine traffic stop,
00:00:10
but for the 18-year-old son of a civil rights activist
00:00:14
it ended in death.
00:00:17
An English professor joins a religious cult
00:00:20
and then vanishes.
00:00:22
His family wants answers.
00:00:25
Outside of Nevada casino a woman is found with two gunshots
00:00:29
to the head.
00:00:30
Her son says that he has no idea what happened,
00:00:33
and then he took a polygraph.
00:00:36
And one of the largest man-hunts in Northern California history
00:00:40
fails to capture a wanted murderer.
00:00:44
Maybe you know where he is.
00:00:48
I'm Dennis Farina and this is "Unsolved Mysteries."

00:01:30
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Lakehead, California.
00:01:33
On a July day a young man in a Chevy Suburban speeds
00:01:36
southbound along Interstate 5 in Shasta County, California.
00:01:41
On his tail is highway patrol officer Kevin Benson.
00:01:45
Southbound approaching Pollard Flat, Washington.
00:01:47
Tom, x-ray Sam.
00:01:49
7:26.
00:01:50
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Officer Benson
00:01:52
doesn't realize that he's following
00:01:53
a very dangerous fugitive.
00:01:56
Antonio Castro is a Mexican national with a long record
00:02:01
of violent crimes.
00:02:03
Officer Benson kept Castro in his sights for about 10 miles.
00:02:08
All right, got 52, 61.
00:02:10
Be advised he's exiting at Follard Flat.
00:02:13
The exit led to a dead-end.
00:02:15
Castro was trapped, or so it seemed.
00:02:20
Get your hands up.
00:02:22
Got a problem, officer?
00:02:25
OFFICER KEVIN BENSON: Get your hands up.
00:02:26
Get out of the car.
00:02:28
Getting out, OK?
00:02:29
Getting out.
00:02:30
Keep your hands up.
00:02:33
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Three days earlier
00:02:34
Antonio Castro allegedly attacked a man, stole his car,
00:02:38
and torched it, 800 miles away in the state of Washington.
00:02:43
WILLIAM GOULART: He stabbed me multiple times,
00:02:45
kicked me, and left me on the floor.
00:02:48
Went through my pockets for the car keys, took my car and left.
00:02:55
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): A day earlier just down the road,
00:02:57
72-year-old Michael Fadeff had been
00:03:01
murdered in his farm house.
00:03:03
Mr. Fadeff was beaten badly, shot twice.
00:03:08
One day worst cases our pathologist has ever seen.
00:03:12
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The prime suspect
00:03:14
was Antonio Castro.
00:03:16
- Keep your hands up. - Come on, officer.
00:03:17
What did you pull me over for, huh?
00:03:18
I didn't do nothing, man. - Stop right there.
00:03:19
Keep your hands up.
00:03:20
ANTONIO CASTRO: OK. OK.
00:03:21
Hey, wait. They're up.
00:03:21
They're up.
00:03:22
OFFICER KEVIN BENSON: Don't move.
00:03:24
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Castro
00:03:25
fled into the wilderness.
00:03:27
Within an hour law enforcement agents
00:03:29
began a manhunt on rugged terrain
00:03:32
at the Sacramento River Canyon. - Yet.
00:03:36
CAPT. RON RICHARDSON: The whole situation
00:03:37
was dealt with as an emergency in progress.
00:03:40
Tell me what you've got on this guy.
00:03:42
He's dangerous and he's smart.
00:03:43
There was nothing that led us to believe
00:03:45
that he wouldn't commit the same acts in his attempt
00:03:49
to flee the area.
00:03:51
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): 40 police units were dispatched.
00:03:54
The highway patrol put extra squad cars on the interstate.
00:03:57
Trackers combed the Sacramento River.
00:04:00
SWAT teams checked the freight trains
00:04:01
that ran through the canyon.
00:04:03
But there was no sign of Antonio Castro.
00:04:10
Authorities guessed that the fugitive
00:04:12
would stick to the river.
00:04:14
An hour later they were proven right.
00:04:16
Got a print over here.
00:04:20
Yeah, that's our guy.
00:04:20
Better call it in.
00:04:21
He's going northbound.
00:04:23
CAPT. RON RICHARDSON: There wasn't
00:04:24
anything rational about him.
00:04:26
It was difficult to pinpoint what he would do next.
00:04:29
This guy had no feelings towards taking a human life to just get
00:04:33
an automobile, just to provide himself transportation
00:04:36
to kill another human being.
00:04:42
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): For reasons of his own
00:04:44
Castro decided not to kill the lost motors
00:04:47
he passed while fleeing from authorities.
00:04:50
Castro ran back into the woods and headed south.
00:04:55
CAPT. RON RICHARDSON: This is an extremely rugged canyon.
00:04:57
We could have had an army of officers out there
00:05:00
and he still would have slipped by us,
00:05:02
just because of the natural terrain
00:05:04
and the concealment opportunities
00:05:06
he had made available to him.
00:05:09
Castro is a survivalist.
00:05:11
This man has the skills to survive in elements that
00:05:15
the average person wouldn't.
00:05:18
Call in the teams.
00:05:19
We'll just pick it up tomorrow.
00:05:22
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): At nightfall captain
00:05:23
Richardson was forced to pull the trackers out of the canyon.
00:05:27
CAPT. RON RICHARDSON: And our fear level
00:05:28
kept rising because we hadn't had any reports
00:05:31
on the movement of the suspect.
00:05:33
We hadn't been able to confirm whether he
00:05:35
was still in the area or not.
00:05:37
And it became our concern that he
00:05:38
had taken refuge in somebody's home holding them hostage
00:05:41
or doing them harm.
00:05:43
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): As far
00:05:44
as anyone knows Castro did not interact
00:05:47
with anyone that night.
00:05:49
In the morning he showed up soaking wet
00:05:52
in the small town of Lakehead, eight miles south
00:05:55
of where the chase had begun. - Excuse me?
00:05:57
Can I help you with something?
00:05:59
I'd like to buy your car if it runs good.
00:06:01
WOMAN: Yeah, it runs.
00:06:03
I'd like to buy it for my wife.
00:06:04
A few hundred bucks, right?
00:06:07
Yeah, if you got the cash.
00:06:08
I got cash.
00:06:10
I'll get the key.
00:06:11
[suspenseful music]
00:06:20
It's a little wet.
00:06:21
I hope you don't mind.
00:06:23
Just wait right there.
00:06:24
I'll be right back.
00:06:26
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Minutes later
00:06:28
Castro was back on the road, having
00:06:30
alluded one of the largest manhunts
00:06:33
in Northern California history.
00:06:37
The authorities feel very fortunate that no one was
00:06:39
hurt during Castro's flight.
00:06:41
They fear however that the next time Castro
00:06:44
is cornered he may lash out.
00:06:47
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Antonio Magana Castro
00:06:49
is wanted for murder and attempted murder.
00:06:52
He was born in 1967, is 5 feet 7 inches tall with a muscular
00:06:57
build.
00:06:58
His right index finger is cut off at the knuckle,
00:07:01
and his violent nature has earned
00:07:03
him the nickname "El Loco".
00:07:06
He is known to have family in Orange County, California
00:07:09
and in Mexico.

00:07:24
Next, a woman is murdered on her son's wedding day.
00:07:28
Incredibly, police suspect that he killed her.
00:07:47
In Reno, Nevada, 38-year-old Tim McClure lived with his mother,
00:07:52
Terry, off and on throughout his 20's.
00:07:56
They were often seen together at slot machines or dining out.
00:08:01
Even after Tim moved away they remained close.
00:08:05
She'd do anything for anybody.
00:08:08
She'd give the shirt off her back,
00:08:10
her last nickle to anybody.
00:08:12
She just was a real kind-hearted woman.
00:08:15
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Terry was 62-years-old and living
00:08:18
alone when Tim called her to tell her that he was getting
00:08:22
married in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
00:08:26
The wedding party celebrated by doing a little gambling,
00:08:30
and then around 10:00 p.m.
00:08:32
Tim walked his mother to her car.
00:08:34
She planned to drive straight home to Reno, about an hour
00:08:37
away.
00:08:41
The next evening when Tim and his new bride
00:08:44
stopped to visit Terry they noticed signs
00:08:47
that she had not made it home.
00:08:49
She didn't bring her paper in this morning.
00:08:50
TIM MCCLURE: It just appeared as though she hadn't been home.
00:08:54
And it was at that point I just had the strangest feeling
00:08:57
that something was wrong.
00:08:59
There I was on my honeymoon, up there to get married,
00:09:02
and she had taken time off of work.
00:09:05
And to not find her at home, I just couldn't understand it.
00:09:11
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): No friends or family
00:09:13
had seen or heard from Terry.
00:09:16
Tim called the police.
00:09:18
Yeah, I've got a missing person.
00:09:19
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Three days
00:09:21
went by, then in the parking lot of a Carson
00:09:23
City, Nevada Casino, Terry McClure's car was found.
00:09:28
It was a half hour's drive outside of Lake Tahoe.
00:09:31
The keys were in the ignition and the doors were locked.
00:09:34
And Terry was sitting upright in the front seat.
00:09:38
She had been shot twice in the head.
00:09:42
The day after Terry McClure's body
00:09:43
was found Tim was questioned by police.
00:09:47
When asked if he wanted an attorney present
00:09:49
Tim suddenly realized that he had become a suspect.
00:09:54
TIM MCCLURE: I started to feel like a victim.
00:09:56
And I thought, why should I have an attorney?
00:09:58
And I mean, this is my mother's death.
00:09:59
You should be investigating it on another level,
00:10:02
rather than thinking of me as doing it.
00:10:05
Which I found out they were looking towards me.
00:10:07
I couldn't understand why.
00:10:08
I started to feel like the victim.
00:10:10
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Tim told police
00:10:11
that on the night of his wedding he walked his mother to her car
00:10:15
and then returned to the casino.
00:10:17
He said that his wife was still gambling with her parents
00:10:21
so he gambled alone for two hours.
00:10:25
He then rejoined her and they went out dancing until dark.
00:10:30
They indicated that they partied from approximately
00:10:33
midnight until 6:00 a.m.
00:10:35
The following morning, none of which
00:10:38
we were able to substantiate one way or another.
00:10:42
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Tim also told police
00:10:44
that two days before his mother's body
00:10:46
was discovered he searched the main highway
00:10:49
between Lake Tahoe and Reno.
00:10:52
The police became suspicious when he said that he
00:10:56
was looking for her purse.
00:10:58
DET.
00:10:59
SGT. SCOTT BURAU: We again found this odd
00:11:01
that he would attempt to retrace his mother's steps
00:11:05
for the purpose of finding something
00:11:07
that nobody knew was missing.
00:11:09
On the 16gh nobody had any idea her purse was missing.
00:11:13
Oddly enough she was found with only her purse missing.
00:11:17
She was fully clothed, had all her jewelry.
00:11:20
The only thing missing was her purse.
00:11:22
They put together the fact that I
00:11:24
said I was looking for some evidence of her purse
00:11:26
along the side of the highway.
00:11:28
And the only reason I said that was because my older sister
00:11:32
had put the idea that maybe somebody
00:11:34
had commandeered her vehicle and stolen her purse.
00:11:37
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Tim also said
00:11:38
that he drove through the parking lots of the casinos
00:11:41
along his mother's route.
00:11:43
He searched all the lots of every Casino, except one.
00:11:49
TIM MCCLURE: Sometimes you get a gut feeling,
00:11:51
you could maybe think of the Holy Spirit,
00:11:55
if you will, just kind of guiding you.
00:11:57
There was perhaps a feeling of "get me away from there"
00:12:02
to save me from finding her.
00:12:04
I thank God I didn't find her.
00:12:06
That would have destroyed me to find their.
00:12:10
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): And that Casino parking
00:12:11
lot is where Terry's body was found,
00:12:14
two days later on a Monday.
00:12:17
Police estimated that she had been dead since Friday,
00:12:21
the night of Tim's wedding.
00:12:24
Police were suspicious of a call that Tim made to cancel one
00:12:28
of his mother's credit cards.
00:12:30
Tim claims that he made the call on Monday, the day
00:12:33
his mother's body was found.
00:12:35
But the credit card company says that he called on Friday
00:12:39
before his mother disappeared.
00:12:41
I had reported her credit cards missing.
00:12:44
I called on Monday.
00:12:46
The woman had written down that I called on Friday,
00:12:50
which I couldn't understand.
00:12:51
The credit memo for that particular company
00:12:53
is now in the possession of the Sheriff's office.
00:12:55
And it clearly shows, according to their file, that Tim called,
00:13:00
he indicated to the recipient that his mother was dead
00:13:05
and to please cancel the account.
00:13:07
TIM MCCLURE: Its just--
00:13:09
it's one of the strangest things I have ever heard of.
00:13:10
How she could have mixed up my words like that, saying she
00:13:13
had been murdered.
00:13:14
I had no idea she'd been murdered.
00:13:15
All I know she was missing.
00:13:16
And that's what I told them.
00:13:19
CAPT. RON RICHARDSON: Six months before Terry McClure
00:13:21
was murdered she took out a $10,000
00:13:24
insurance policy on her life.
00:13:26
Tim and one of his sisters were named as co-beneficiaries.
00:13:31
TIM MCCLURE: I didn't think my mother would
00:13:33
take out an insurance policy.
00:13:34
It just wasn't like her.
00:13:37
I mean, they're thinking that I did this for a reason,
00:13:41
which my share was only $5,000.
00:13:43
I mean that's ridiculous.
00:13:46
Well, I can't say that that is the absolute motive
00:13:48
in this case, but I'm here to tell you that people have
00:13:53
been killed for a lot less.
00:13:54
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): One month
00:13:56
after their wedding the Carson City police asked him
00:13:59
and his wife to take a polygraph test.
00:14:02
TIM MCCLURE: I was completely cooperative.
00:14:04
I had nothing to hide, no reason not to take one.
00:14:06
So, naturally I said, sure, I'll take a polygraph.
00:14:08
My wife agreed, too.
00:14:10
And as they asked the question there was--
00:14:12
oh, it seemed like maybe a minute between each question
00:14:15
with my eyes closed.
00:14:17
Just a number of things we're just going around
00:14:19
through my mind at that point.
00:14:21
That's when I started thinking, well,
00:14:23
jeez, what if they think I did.
00:14:25
I'd never taken a polygraph before.
00:14:27
I didn't know how to react.
00:14:29
And it was just a very awkward and uncomfortable situation
00:14:33
for me.
00:14:34
DET.
00:14:36
SGT. SCOTT BURAU: The results of those polygraph examinations
00:14:38
would strongly suggest deception on both the part of Timothy
00:14:41
McClure and his wife.
00:14:43
And in the interviews they had no response.
00:14:47
They could not respond to why the machine was telling them
00:14:51
they were being deceptive.
00:14:52
They had no answers.
00:14:54
I don't know why, but I flunked the test.
00:14:57
And my wife had flunked only one question,
00:15:00
which didn't make any sense.
00:15:02
Do you know who murdered Terry McClure?
00:15:04
was the question she was asked, and it appeared
00:15:06
to be a lie when she said no.
00:15:09
So it looked like she was trying to cover up.
00:15:11
Which is unexplainable to me.
00:15:16
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): All the circumstantial evidence was
00:15:18
submitted to the Nevada D.A. But he concluded it was not
00:15:23
enough to arrest Tim McClure.
00:15:25
Police questioned family, friends, and acquaintances
00:15:28
of Tim and Terry.
00:15:30
They said that Tim was devoted to his mother
00:15:32
and that they believed he would never do anything to harm her.
00:15:37
TIM MCCLURE: My mother was my best friend.
00:15:39
I mean, all I could think of was taking care
00:15:41
of my mother for the rest of her life
00:15:43
after she had taken care of me all my life.
00:15:45
That's the one thing I wanted to do was take care of my mother,
00:15:48
and now I can't.
00:15:51
There has to be somebody out there that had seen something
00:15:54
that happened to my mother.
00:15:56
You know, now would be a good time to come out with it.
00:16:00
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): After our broadcast
00:16:02
Tim McClure was arrested for the murder of his mother.
00:16:06
But the D.A. ultimately decided not to prosecute.
00:16:10
The case was dismissed with prejudice.
00:16:15

00:16:18
of Terry McClure please log on to our website at unsolved.com
00:16:27
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Next, an 18-year-old
00:16:29
is arrested in Mississippi.
00:16:31
The next night he is found dead in the jails shower stall.
00:16:47
Jackson, Mississippi.
00:16:50
It started as an ordinary night out for 18-year-old Andre Jones
00:16:55
and his girlfriend, Tanisha.
00:16:58
Then they approached the sobriety checkpoint
00:17:01
near Jackson, Mississippi.
00:17:03
Andre was driving a friend's pickup truck.
00:17:06
Half an hour later Andre's parents
00:17:08
were awakened by a phone call.
00:17:10
His mother was president of a local NAACP
00:17:14
branch, his stepfather, a minister
00:17:17
for the Nation of Islam.
00:17:18
Hello.
00:17:19
It's Tanisha.
00:17:20
I'm sorry to call you, but Andre's been arrested.
00:17:24
Arrested?
00:17:26
It's me.
00:17:27
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): At 2:00 a.m.
00:17:28
Andre called his parents from the police station.
00:17:31
I don't know what the charges are.
00:17:33
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Two hours late Andre called again.
00:17:36
This time to say that he had been
00:17:38
transferred to the Simpson county jail,
00:17:40
40 miles south of Jackson.
00:17:43
He still did not know what the charges were.
00:17:46
ESTHER JONES QUINN: We were told that they could not
00:17:48
tell us anything at that time.
00:17:51
And Simpson county just refused to even talk to us.
00:17:54
And they told us that we could not come to that jail.
00:17:57
Have you heard anything?
00:17:58
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Andre's parents
00:17:59
spoke to him at least five different times on Saturday.
00:18:03
How can they keep me in here an extra day and they
00:18:05
haven't even charged me?
00:18:07
ESTHER JONES QUINN: We could not tell him anything.
00:18:09
He was very much concerned about getting
00:18:12
out immediately so that he could attend
00:18:14
school the very next day.
00:18:16
About midnight that night I heard a knock on the door.
00:18:23
I'm Officer Cole of Jackson police department.
00:18:25
OK.
00:18:26
I have a message here for Mrs. Esther Jones Quinn.
00:18:29
Charles, what is it?
00:18:30
ESTHER JONES QUINN: He gave me the piece
00:18:32
of paper which only had a phone number
00:18:35
for the Simpson county jail.
00:18:37
There was not a note.
00:18:38
There was not a message.
00:18:39
It was only a number.
00:18:41
I was informed that Andre had committed suicide.
00:18:46
I was casually informed that he had committed suicide.
00:18:49
As if they could have been talking to someone
00:18:52
that didn't even know who he was.
00:18:54
Andre's family insists that he never showed any tendency
00:18:58
whatsoever to commit suicide.
00:19:00
They began looking into his death and uncovered glaring
00:19:03
inconsistencies.
00:19:05
Beginning with the details of his arrest.
00:19:08
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): That night
00:19:10
Andre and Tanisha stopped by the Quinn's house in Jackson
00:19:14
around 11:45.
00:19:16
They left, and drove east toward Brandon, where Tanisha lived.
00:19:20
Near the Brandon city limits they came upon the checkpoint.
00:19:25
According to the police, Andre stopped
00:19:28
just short of the checkpoint and tossed
00:19:30
something out of the window.
00:19:35
Sir, did you throw something out of this vehicle?
00:19:37
No, officer.
00:19:38
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Police identified the object
00:19:40
as a 38 caliber hand gun.
00:19:43
Is that an open beer can?
00:19:44
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The police
00:19:45
also said that inside the truck there was an open can of beer.
00:19:49
And the truck, which Andre had borrowed
00:19:51
and driven for more than a week, turned out to stolen.
00:19:57
I ain't know nothing about the truck.
00:19:59
But I know there wasn't no beer in the truck.
00:20:02
And he did not throw a gun out the truck,
00:20:04
because there was no gun in the truck.
00:20:06
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Tanisha's version
00:20:07
of the events is very different from the police report.
00:20:11
What's your name?
00:20:12
Andre Jones.
00:20:13
Mr. Jones, pull over to--
00:20:15
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Tanisha claims
00:20:16
that the moment the officers heard Andres
00:20:18
name their attitude changed.
00:20:22
TANISHA: After they asked him his mind
00:20:24
they all went to a little--
00:20:25
I'd say like a little huddle.
00:20:26
You know, like a football huddle.
00:20:28
And they was-- I don't know what they was talking about,
00:20:30
because they was talking low.
00:20:31
And after that, that's when they came to the truck
00:20:34
and asked Andre again, did he have his license?
00:20:36
And he said, no, sir.
00:20:37
I don't have my license.
00:20:38
Step away.
00:20:40
Hands on the roof of the vehicle.
00:20:41
Spread your legs for me.
00:20:42
TANISHA: And they asked him to step out the truck, that's
00:20:43
when they handcuffed him.
00:20:44
They shackled his feet, and they had him
00:20:47
handcuffed at the same time.
00:20:48
I didn't understand what was going on.
00:20:49
You have the right to remain silent.
00:20:51
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): State Public
00:20:52
Safety Commissioner, Jim Ingram, disagrees
00:20:54
with Tanisha's version of the incident that night.
00:20:57
JIM INGRAM: There was no confrontation whatsoever
00:21:00
with young Andre Jones.
00:21:02
In fact, the officers were very amazed how cooperative he was.
00:21:08
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Andre was charged with four counts,
00:21:12
driving a truck whose vehicle identification number had been
00:21:15
altered, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of stolen
00:21:19
license plate tags, and driving with an open container
00:21:23
of alcohol.
00:21:24
Commissioner Ingram still insists that the arrest
00:21:27
was not confrontational.
00:21:29
But Charles Quinn says that an inmate in Brandon
00:21:32
claims that police used racial slurs to intimidate Andre.
00:21:38
CHARLES QUINN: One of the inmates who were transferred
00:21:41
with Andre said that the officer said, do you
00:21:45
know what happened to niggers for stealing
00:21:48
a white man's truck?
00:21:50
And, of course, other statements were said to put fear in Andre.
00:22:01
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The next day Andre was transferred
00:22:03
to the Simpson county jail.
00:22:05
That night his body was found in a shower stall
00:22:09
at the end of a dimly lit corridor.
00:22:13
One of the men walked back and said
00:22:17
they found a young man hanging by a shoe lace and the shower's
00:22:23
still running.
00:22:24
And that's when they called for the guards.
00:22:25
And immediately they unlocked the cell and took him down.
00:22:30
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Authorities
00:22:31
say Andre tied his own shoe lace to an iron grate
00:22:35
above the shower head.
00:22:37
When Charles Quinn was allowed to visit the cell
00:22:39
he estimated the grate was about eight feet above the floor.
00:22:44
CHARLES QUINN: He would need someone
00:22:46
to have held him up to do that.
00:22:51
And he would have needed some type of stew to stand on.
00:22:58
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The state approved pathologists who
00:23:00
performed Andre's autopsy said investigators had shown
00:23:03
that it was possible for Andre to have
00:23:06
hanged himself without help.
00:23:09
That position was easily reached
00:23:11
by a member of the Sheriff's office
00:23:15
who was acting as the deceased.
00:23:17
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Less than a week after Andre's death
00:23:20
his parents hired an independent pathologist to review the case.
00:23:24
DR. JAMES BRYANT: I think it's highly
00:23:26
probable that he was strangled.
00:23:27
Someone did this to him.
00:23:29
In the usual case of a suicide by hanging
00:23:31
the ligature mark is along the side of the neck
00:23:34
and doesn't go all the way around.
00:23:36
It's in this fashion.
00:23:38
Whereas in the case of Andre Jones,
00:23:40
the ligature marking went along the side
00:23:42
of the neck and all the way into the back
00:23:44
and crisscrossed in this fashion.
00:23:46
This suggests to me that someone had to come from behind
00:23:49
and wrap the ligature around his neck.
00:23:52
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The official autopsy report
00:23:54
listed no evidence of bruising on Andre's neck
00:23:57
or anywhere else on his body.
00:24:00
Dr. Bryant disagrees.
00:24:02
DR JAMES BRYANT: He had some bruising under one of his eyes,
00:24:04
and also he had some bruising on the shoulder of the same side.
00:24:07
The bruising could have been right at the time that he died,
00:24:11
or it could have been sometime during the day.
00:24:13
but?
00:24:14
Apparently he had suffered some kind of blunt trauma
00:24:17
sometime during the time he was in the jail.
00:24:20
We were informed by one of the inmates
00:24:23
that Andre was taken off that cell block
00:24:28
and out of that jail.
00:24:30
And when he was brought back in he
00:24:32
was brought back in a wheel chair.
00:24:36
And that he was laid on the shower floor
00:24:39
and the hanging scene was staged.
00:24:43
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): A year
00:24:45
after Andre's death, Mississippi named a new medical examiner.
00:24:49
She reviewed Andre's autopsy report, as well as
00:24:52
the autopsies of several other men
00:24:55
who had died by hanging in Mississippi jails.
00:24:59
I think it's extremely unlikely that any of these deaths
00:25:03
are anything other than suicide.
00:25:05
All of the deaths have been investigated
00:25:07
by not just one agency, but one or two, or sometimes three.
00:25:11
I would never believe that Andre committed suicide.
00:25:16
I know my son was murdered.
00:25:18
And the fact that his life was taken so cruelly and so
00:25:23
abruptly, makes me even more determined
00:25:26
to see that he is vindicated.
00:25:29
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): So far vindication
00:25:31
has eluded the Quinn's.
00:25:33
They filed two lawsuits, one against the state
00:25:36
of Mississippi and the other against the federal government.
00:25:40
Both were dismissed.
00:25:43
An investigation by the US Justice Department
00:25:46
cited Mississippi's jail system for what they called
00:25:49
gross deficiencies, including unsanitary conditions
00:25:53
and untrained employees.
00:25:56
But the report failed to find evidence
00:25:59
that the Mississippi hanging's were
00:26:01
anything other than suicides.
00:26:08
Next, his client's think of him as an investment genius,
00:26:12
until he sails off with $6 million of their money.
00:26:26
Police.
00:26:27
I'm police.
00:26:28
Anybody on board?
00:26:29
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): A Summer
00:26:30
evening on Lake Michigan, a drifting yacht
00:26:33
is sighted just offshore.
00:26:36
Its occupant apparently in trouble.
00:26:39
Officer Wayne Brooks responds to the call.
00:26:42
OFFICER WAYNE BROOKS: When I initially got
00:26:43
there I heard the engines running.
00:26:45
As I was approaching closer the engines died.
00:26:48
The boat was then just drifting.
00:26:51
I was able to pull myself up over the side.
00:26:53
I was looking for a victim of a possible heart attack.
00:26:57
Police. I'm police.
00:26:59
Anyone on board?
00:27:00
OFFICER WAYNE BROOKS: I searched the boat,
00:27:01
cabin area down below, found nobody on the boat.
00:27:04
Police department.
00:27:06
When I arrived, the way the engines
00:27:07
were running, if someone had fallen off
00:27:09
that boat it's my opinion they could not
00:27:11
have gotten back onto the boat.
00:27:12
It would have been moving away from them too quickly.
00:27:15
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The owner
00:27:16
of the yacht was 42-year-old investment
00:27:19
counselor, Woody Kelly.
00:27:21
No sign of Kelly or his body has ever been found.
00:27:28
10 Years earlier, Kelly and his family
00:27:30
moved into a modest neighborhood in the small Illinois
00:27:34
town of Antioch.
00:27:36
After Kelly began an investment business
00:27:39
the family's fortune began to change.
00:27:43
They moved to a mansion near a local lake
00:27:46
and Kelly became one of the town's most respected citizens.
00:27:51
ROBERT WILTON: Wood, I feel, was considered by a lot of people
00:27:54
as a pillar of the community.
00:27:56
Hi there.
00:27:56
Hello, Woody.
00:27:58
He belonged to two very active community
00:28:02
organizations, participated a great deal
00:28:06
in those organizations.
00:28:08
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Kelly also
00:28:09
invited his new friends and neighbors
00:28:10
to his luxurious home.
00:28:13
Many became his clients.
00:28:17
LETA WILTON: He became your friend.
00:28:19
He'd actually make you want to invest money.
00:28:22
God, I wish I had some money I could give him.
00:28:26
DR. NORMAN OSGOOD: He seemed very professional.
00:28:28
He had a very substantial office, office staff.
00:28:33
Carol, I'd like you to meet Brendan.
00:28:34
DR. NORMAN OSGOOD: His reports were very exacting.
00:28:37
He just had all the instruments that promoted confidence.
00:28:40
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Kelly was
00:28:41
able to promise and deliver an amazing 60% to 90%
00:28:47
interest on his investments.
00:28:50
Woody was enthusiastic about what he was doing.
00:28:53
He did not come on hard sell.
00:28:57
He was fairly laid back.
00:29:00
He assured me that this was a good investment,
00:29:02
that I really should consider it,
00:29:04
and he would welcome my business.
00:29:06
Are they insured?
00:29:07
I mean, is this safe?
00:29:08
Definitely.
00:29:09
To me, I think they're just a very, very good
00:29:12
situation for you to be in.
00:29:14
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): As Kelly's business flourished so
00:29:17
did his lifestyle.
00:29:18
He owned four luxury cars, two airplanes, three
00:29:23
different homes, and six boats.
00:29:26
As a hobby he even started a yacht charter service.
00:29:30
One early June day Kelly showed up at a yacht dealership
00:29:34
to check on a new boat that he had just purchased.
00:29:38
DAVID KELLY: He told me he was going take the boat out,
00:29:40
so I asked him if he wanted me to go with him for a test ride.
00:29:44
Our company policy is that nobody will go for a lake test
00:29:47
alone.
00:29:49
This is my boat, I'm taking it out.
00:29:51
DAVID KELLY: He was very adamant about it.
00:29:53
He said, no, I have people waiting for me at the dock.
00:29:57
He said, I want to go out alone.
00:30:01
So I helped him cast off, and that
00:30:03
was the last we seen of him.
00:30:06
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Kelly headed south towards Waukegan,
00:30:08
Illinois, about 20 miles away.
00:30:11
He told his family that he would be home by six o'clock.
00:30:16
He never returned.
00:30:21
The Coast Guard retraced Kelly's route.
00:30:24
When they found his sunglasses on board
00:30:26
they assumed that he had accidentally fallen overboard.
00:30:31
But his body was never found.
00:30:36
After Woody Kelly's disappearance
00:30:38
the town of Antioch was in shock.
00:30:40
But as time passed shock turned to anger.
00:30:44
Not only was Kelly missing, but so was
00:30:47
most of his investors' money.
00:30:50
Now we're going to grab all the business records,
00:30:53
all right?
00:30:54
I don't want to [inaudible] anything left.
00:30:55
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The same week
00:30:56
that Kelly disappeared a client filed a civil suit accusing him
00:30:59
of improper business practices.
00:31:02
The Lake County Sheriff's Department
00:31:04
started an investigation.
00:31:05
We have a search warrant for Kelly's business and offices.
00:31:08
DET.
00:31:10
DAN COLIN: When the office staff began looking at the records
00:31:12
they realized that there was no money in the bank accounts.
00:31:14
This is where they kept his private files?
00:31:16
Right. DET.
00:31:17
DAN COLIN: The money was just being spent.
00:31:18
Every time an investor would put money in it
00:31:20
was going right back out.
00:31:21
So basically, immediately looking at the checkbooks you
00:31:24
knew that it was a fraud.
00:31:26
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Kelly's records show
00:31:28
that most of the investors' money
00:31:30
had gone straight into his pockets, almost $6 million
00:31:35
was missing.
00:31:37
I gave Woody Kelly $110,000 to invest for me.
00:31:42
I have never recovered one cent.
00:31:45
My husband I invested our money with Woody
00:31:48
after we sold our home.
00:31:50
And we invested I estimate about $30,000.
00:31:55
My investment with Woody Kelly was in excess of $400,000
00:32:01
and the entire sum was eventually lost.
00:32:05
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Seven years after Kelly disappeared,
00:32:08
his wife tried to have him declared legally dead.
00:32:11
At the hearing two acquaintances testified that they had
00:32:16
seen him after he disappeared.
00:32:19
Not only was Woody Kelly not declared dead,
00:32:22
but a federal grand jury indicted
00:32:24
him on 18 counts of mail fraud and two counts of IRS fraud.
00:32:30
There's a warrant out for his arrest.
00:32:34
Woody Kelly was born in 1943.
00:32:37
He is 5 feet 11 and weighs 200 pounds.
00:32:40
His eyes are blue, and at the time of his disappearance
00:32:43
his hair was brown, but now may be gray.
00:32:46
These are home movies taken of Kelly the same year
00:32:51
he disappeared.
00:32:53
If you have any information about Woody Kelly
00:32:56
and his missing millions please log on
00:32:58
to our website at unsolved.com
00:33:06
Next, a man joins a French religious 1
00:33:09
and then disappears.
00:33:11
His parents are asking for your help to find him.
00:33:26
DON: By you've-- I'm sure you've heard of my death,
00:33:31
and I'm sorry to have to put you through this this way.
00:33:36
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): In this haunting message
00:33:38
to his family, 50-year-old Don Hoffman
00:33:41
reveals that he has terminal cancer,
00:33:44
a diagnosis he says was confirmed
00:33:46
by three different doctors.
00:33:49
They found that I had terminal non-operable cancer.
00:33:54
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Just hours after making this video
00:33:57
Don took his own life.
00:33:59
But an autopsy found no trace of cancer.
00:34:02
His children have never learned that names
00:34:04
of the three doctors, or even if they really existed.
00:34:09
The heir to Don Hoffman's estate was his second wife, Terry,
00:34:13
founder of a spiritual movement known as Conscious Development
00:34:17
of body, mind, and soul.
00:34:20
Terry Hoffman is at the center of what some
00:34:23
might call a circle of death.
00:34:26
The victims include Mary Levinson, drug overdose, David
00:34:31
and Glenda Goodman, shot to death,
00:34:33
probable double suicide, Jill Bounds, beaten to death,
00:34:39
Sandy Cleaver, drove over a cliff in broad daylight,
00:34:43
Sandy's 14-year-old daughter, Deveraux, drowned.
00:34:49
Some say that one more person should be added to that list,
00:34:52
a popular teacher named Charles Southern Jr. Is missing,
00:34:56
he too was a disciple of Terry Hoffman when
00:34:59
he disappeared without a trace.
00:35:02
TERRY HOFFMAN: CALL upon your master, his eyes.
00:35:05
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Peace, harmony,
00:35:07
and enlightenment, Hoffman offered all this and more
00:35:11
to Charles Southern and the others who joined her group,
00:35:14
Conscious Development.
00:35:15
Guide you at this time.
00:35:17
Part of the belief system Terry
00:35:19
taught us was that death was really just
00:35:22
another state of consciousness.
00:35:26
And it wasn't a bad thing.
00:35:27
It wasn't anything to fear.
00:35:28
Was created for you.
00:35:29
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Peter Muth belonged to Hoffman's
00:35:31
group for more than a decade.
00:35:34
PETER MUTH: The other thing we learned
00:35:35
was that the dark forces out there in universe had a name.
00:35:38
They were the black lords, black overlords.
00:35:41
They worked for Satan.
00:35:42
Fight those dark Lord in eye.
00:35:45
PETER MUTH: The group we worked with where
00:35:47
The White Brotherhood, of good benevolent characters.
00:35:50
They were on God's side, good guys.
00:35:53
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): In Chicago,
00:35:54
Charles joined a local branch of Conscious Development.
00:35:59
Charles was assistant chairman of the English department
00:36:02
at a local junior college.
00:36:04
He was also a seeker of spiritual truth,
00:36:08
a search that had taken him to India and Africa.
00:36:13
Charles was very interested in eastern religions,
00:36:17
and various religions.
00:36:18
In fact, he studied all the different religions
00:36:21
that he could.
00:36:24
That was his curiosity.
00:36:26
I think it got him into trouble.
00:36:29
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Charles rose quickly
00:36:31
in Hoffman's organization.
00:36:33
He was soon teaching classes and leading meditation sessions.
00:36:37
At your own pace.
00:36:38
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Eventually
00:36:40
he was invited to Terry Hoffman's home in Dallas.
00:36:43
The darkness of the Lord comes and he is bright in his evil.
00:36:47
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Hoffman
00:36:49
began to claim that she was under attack
00:36:51
by these so-called black lords.
00:36:54
She asked her trusted inner circle to form
00:36:57
a psychic shield around her.
00:37:01
The shield is strong but it must be stronger.
00:37:04
Our inner core group, who we're fighting the battles,
00:37:06
lived in a kind of constant state of fear,
00:37:09
because we're always under attack from black magician
00:37:12
who supposedly could kill us, who could drive us insane.
00:37:15
And as the years went by you saw people in your group
00:37:18
actually start to show signs of the strain,
00:37:21
shows signs of mental and emotional problems.
00:37:25
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Charles apparently
00:37:27
collapsed under the pressure.
00:37:29
DR. CHERYLE SOUTHERN: We found Charles
00:37:31
wandering on the street, carried a newspaper, stated,
00:37:35
I lived for art.
00:37:37
We got him in the car and took him to Michael
00:37:39
Reese Hospital for examination.
00:37:42
Stating that he might be suicidal,
00:37:45
and he also seemed to be reciting
00:37:47
something in a strange language over and over and over again.
00:37:52
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): While Charles was recovering
00:37:54
his mother visited every day.
00:37:57
And so did two members of Hoffman's group.
00:38:00
I'm feeling much better. Much better.
00:38:02
Good. Glad to hear it.
00:38:03
DR. CHERYLE SOUTHERN: Later I was to find out from my mother,
00:38:06
who stayed with my brother during the whole five days,
00:38:10
that whenever she was there at the hospital
00:38:12
and they came she was asked to leave the room and stay out.
00:38:21
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): After his release
00:38:23
Charles stayed active in the group,
00:38:25
but eventually became disillusioned with Hoffman.
00:38:29
As Christmas neared he made plans for a trip to India.
00:38:34
In the days before he was supposed to leave
00:38:36
his mother got a feeling that something was very wrong.
00:38:41
INGERBORD D. SOUTHERN: I told him that I was disturbed.
00:38:43
And I felt that I should come to Chicago.
00:38:47
And he said, no.
00:38:50
He said, you don't need to come to Chicago because I'm
00:38:53
perfectly all right.
00:38:55
And I will be leaving for India in three days.
00:39:01
So he assured me that everything was all right
00:39:03
and with that insurance I didn't go.
00:39:07
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): That was the last time
00:39:09
she spoke to her son.
00:39:11
Two weeks passed.
00:39:14
We, of course, wondered why we didn't hear from him.
00:39:18
But he had traveled so much and so often
00:39:21
to so many parts of the world I wasn't overly concerned
00:39:26
until he was over-due.
00:39:29
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Charles parents drove
00:39:31
300 miles from Cincinnati.
00:39:33
They broke into their son's house
00:39:36
and their concern turned to fear.
00:39:39
Charles passport showed no entry stamps from India.
00:39:45
Placed on a ceremonial stool from Africa
00:39:48
where Charles winter dress hat and his coat,
00:39:51
neatly folded inside out.
00:39:54
Only later would his family learn
00:39:56
that this was a Nigerian tribal symbol of death.
00:40:01
Charles parents also found a vial
00:40:03
containing a powerful drug, similar to the lethal
00:40:07
South-American poison, curare.
00:40:10
DR. CHERYLE SOUTHERN: We don't know why my brother had
00:40:12
this vial, which was later identified
00:40:14
to be a ganglionic blocker, which
00:40:17
is a medicine used in anesthesia, which
00:40:19
causes total muscle paralysis.
00:40:23
It has to be injected, too.
00:40:25
Not eaten.
00:40:26
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Charles parents
00:40:28
also discovered two scribbled notes, barely legible.
00:40:32
This is Charles handwriting, but it doesn't make sense.
00:40:34
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Apparently, Charles last will
00:40:37
and testament.
00:40:39
One said in part, I come under a bad influence
00:40:43
and I was trying to fight it myself.
00:40:46
Terry Hoffman was mentioned twice and named
00:40:49
executor of his estate.
00:40:52
There was just a lot of death and unhappiness
00:40:57
around this woman.
00:40:59
Charles disappearance simply fits into that pattern.
00:41:03
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Over a 12 year period,
00:41:04
two of Hoffman's four husbands, her only son, six followers,
00:41:10
and two people related to or employed by a follower,
00:41:14
came to an unnatural end.
00:41:16
Causes of death, one murder, four fatal accidents,
00:41:21
and six suicides.
00:41:25
In over half the deaths, Terry Hoffman
00:41:28
was named heir or beneficiary, designated to receive over half
00:41:33
a million dollars in cash, plus hundreds
00:41:36
of thousands more in real estate, fine arts, and jewelry.
00:41:41
But authorities have not directly linked her
00:41:44
to any of the deaths.
00:41:47
Charles Southern is still missing.
00:41:50
He is six feet two inches tall and weighs 180 pounds.
00:41:54
He may have a full beard.
