Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 2, Episode 10

March 09, 2017 / 42:48

This episode of "Unsolved Mysteries" covers a fake kidnapping gone wrong, a woman's mysterious disappearance from a casino, psychic abilities after car accidents, and a buried treasure in Montana.

In Littleton, Colorado, Roger Dean is murdered during a staged kidnapping. His wife, DJ, and daughter, Tammy, receive an anonymous letter from the killer demanding money and threatening their lives. The FBI investigates but struggles to catch the extortionist.

In Laughlin, Nevada, Jean Moore goes missing after her fiancé, Al Henderson, claims to have dropped her off at a casino. Surveillance footage contradicts Al's story, raising suspicions among Jean's family about his involvement in her disappearance.

John Holland and Elizabeth Joyce, two car accident survivors, share their experiences of developing psychic abilities after their near-death experiences. They both claim to have helped solve cases using their newfound gifts.

The episode concludes with the legend of Henry Plummer, a sheriff who allegedly buried $6 million in gold in Montana before being hanged. Local treasure hunters continue to search for the hidden fortune.

TL;DR

00:01:36
DENNIS FARINA: Littleton, Colorado--
00:01:40
it was an ordinary Wednesday morning in the neighborhood
00:01:42
of Roger and DJ Dean, except for this strange car
00:01:46
parked on the street.
00:01:49
Some remembered it was a '68 Pontiac,
00:01:52
others a '76 Oldsmobile.
00:01:56
But everyone agreed the man inside was a stranger.
00:02:01
At the time, they thought nothing of it.
00:02:03
But at the time, Roger Dean was still alive.
00:02:10
Roger called his wife into the bedroom
00:02:12
around 7:00 that morning.
00:02:14
DJ, come out here.
00:02:16
What is it, Roger?
00:02:17
Alright lady.
00:02:18
Shut up and get on the bed.
00:02:19
Ow!
00:02:22
Roger!
00:02:23
Shut up!
00:02:25
DENNIS FARINA: The masked intruder forced Roger
00:02:26
to tie and blindfold his wife.
00:02:31
Then he took Roger into another room.
00:02:34
As DJ lay helplessly on her bed, she
00:02:37
could hear Roger and the gunman talking,
00:02:39
but she couldn't tell what they were saying.
00:02:43
DJ heard the gunman rifling through drawers.
00:02:49
Let's go.
00:02:50
All right, I'll give you the money!
00:02:51
Go!
00:02:54
DENNIS FARINA: Then, a loud noise.
00:02:58
At the front door he fired again at point blank range.
00:03:17
Roger Dean died before help could arrive.
00:03:23
From the beginning, several aspects of the case
00:03:26
puzzled investigators.
00:03:28
Roger had twine marks on only one wrist,
00:03:31
so it appeared that he had never actually
00:03:33
been tied up by the gunman.
00:03:36
Also, Roger was wearing contact lenses when he was shot.
00:03:40
Look at his glasses here.
00:03:42
DENNIS FARINA: Yet strangely, in an upstairs bedroom,
00:03:45
his glasses were found covered with duct tape.
00:03:50
Police believe that both the twine and the glasses
00:03:53
were red herrings planted to give the impression that Roger
00:03:57
had been blindfolded and bound.
00:03:59
We believe that Roger hired an individual to come over
00:04:02
to basically kidnap him, take him to his bank,
00:04:08
withdraw $30,000 from their account,
00:04:12
and then obviously drop Roger off someplace
00:04:15
so Roger could report a robbery, and he would
00:04:18
have that $30,000 to himself.
00:04:21
DENNIS FARINA: During the investigation,
00:04:23
police also learned that Roger had taken nearly $30,000
00:04:27
from his business and put it in a secret account.
00:04:33
On most weekdays, Roger left home before 6:15 AM.
00:04:38
On the day of his murder, he was seen drinking coffee
00:04:41
in his garage at 7:00 AM.
00:04:46
What we make of the timing is that he
00:04:49
was waiting for this individual to come
00:04:51
and meet him at his house.
00:04:53
We also believe that the individual was probably sitting
00:04:56
in his car when Roger lifted the garage door, which
00:04:59
was the signal for his individual
00:05:01
to get out of his car and walk over to the Roger's home.
00:05:07
In my heart, I cannot believe that Roger
00:05:09
had anything to do with this.
00:05:12
This is the man that I was married to for 26 years,
00:05:17
and yes, there had been personal problems in the last few years,
00:05:25
especially since the death of our son.
00:05:29
But I knew the man too well.
00:05:35
DENNIS FARINA: After Roger's death,
00:05:37
DJ and her daughter Tammy tried to move on with their lives.
00:05:41
But five years later they received
00:05:43
a chilling, anonymous letter.
00:05:45
Incredibly, its author claimed to be
00:05:47
the man who killed Roger Dean.
00:05:53
The letter demanded $100,000, and
00:05:57
if the money wasn't delivered, he threatened to kill again.
00:06:01
MURDERER: Do you know that I have met your daughter
00:06:03
Tammy on a few occasions?
00:06:06
Do not make me kill her.
00:06:09
Your son is dead.
00:06:10
Your husband is dead.
00:06:12
Do not risk your daughter.
00:06:14
She's the last one left.
00:06:18
I was in total shock.
00:06:22
I mean, this was like something that doesn't happen to you.
00:06:25
This only happens in the movies.
00:06:27
It makes me angry that we had just
00:06:29
started to get on with our lives and put the past in the past,
00:06:32
and it's all brought up to you again.
00:06:34
And this person isn't letting us continue,
00:06:36
and we never did anything to deserve this.
00:06:42
DENNIS FARINA: DJ and Tammy called the police and the FBI.
00:06:45
They were convinced that the letter was legitimate
00:06:49
and that it was written by Roger's killer.
00:06:52
DJ and Tammy given around the clock protection.
00:06:55
The killer told DJ that he would call again.
00:07:00
Wait for the second ring, now.
00:07:04
DENNIS FARINA: FBI agents moved into DJ's home,
00:07:07
and set up a wire tap.
00:07:09
Hello?
00:07:10
MURDERER (ON THE PHONE): Listen, your husband owed me money,
00:07:12
and I want my money.
00:07:14
If my husband owed you money, I'll pay you what he owed you.
00:07:17
DENNIS FARINA: The FBI traced the call to a phone booth
00:07:19
in Denver.
00:07:23
But when they got there, the killer was gone.
00:07:32
The killer called 12 more times and then
00:07:35
he told DJ to drive to a supermarket
00:07:37
20 miles north of her home and wait for further instructions.
00:07:42
DJ tried to trap the caller with the help of an FBI
00:07:45
agent hidden in her car.
00:07:47
Surveillance trucks and a SWAT team were nearby.
00:07:50
OK, she's out of the car, and she's headed
00:07:54
across the parking lot now.
00:07:55
She's headed towards the phone booth.
00:08:01
I waited, and I waited, and I waited.
00:08:05
Could not believe I was really having
00:08:07
to go through this terror.
00:08:15
Hello?
00:08:17
DENNIS FARINA: The extortionist finally
00:08:18
called, and told DJ to leave the $100,000 in an alley
00:08:22
behind an apartment complex in downtown Denver.
00:08:26
Later that evening, the FBI watched as DJ made the drop.
00:08:36
They waited until dawn, but no one showed up.
00:08:40
Whether or not he spotted something, whether or not
00:08:43
he just took for granted that the law enforcement was
00:08:47
involved, or whether or not he got cold feet,
00:08:51
and although he didn't detect any type of law enforcement,
00:08:54
he just was too scared to actually make the pick up,
00:08:59
I think all those are possibilities.
00:09:01
When he didn't pick up, I was devastated, because I thought,
00:09:04
this is not over.
00:09:09
there's There's nothing more that either one of us
00:09:11
want than for this to be solved.
00:09:15
He's still terrorizing us.
00:09:17
He is still making us live a nightmare that continues
00:09:21
on and on all the time.
00:09:24
DENNIS FARINA: In his last call, the extortionist told
00:09:26
Tammy he planned to kill her.
00:09:29
He said he would strike when she least expected it.
00:09:33
Authorities believe that the suspect
00:09:34
is white, about six feet tall, and uses
00:09:37
an extensive vocabulary.
00:09:41
They also think that a man and woman working together
00:09:44
wrote the letters.

00:09:55
Next, how could a woman disappear from a busy casino?
00:09:59
24-hour surveillance cameras may provide the answer.
00:10:16
Apple Valley, California-- Al Henderson and Jean Moore
00:10:21
seem like the typical couple in love.
00:10:25
But they spent more than a typical amount
00:10:27
of time getting to know each other.
00:10:30
It took Al 20 years to finally propose to Jean.
00:10:35
She was very happy, and we were
00:10:36
making plans for the wedding.
00:10:39
She got more excited about it with each passing day.
00:10:45
DENNIS FARINA: However, Jean's children weren't nearly
00:10:47
as happy about the engagement.
00:10:50
The longer I knew him, the less genuine he seemed.
00:10:53
I know he said that he loved her many times,
00:10:55
but he also had a habit of putting her
00:10:58
down in front of other people.
00:11:00
And to me, that just didn't sound like love.
00:11:02
When your mother asks you to be nice to somebody who they
00:11:06
like, you go along with it, even though you've tried to talk--
00:11:10
like I did-- I tried to talk my mom
00:11:12
out of being around the guy.
00:11:17
DENNIS FARINA: A few months after the proposal,
00:11:19
Jean and Al went on a vacation in Laughlin, Nevada,
00:11:22
a scaled down version of Las Vegas.
00:11:25
It was there, a few days later, that Al reported Jane missing.
00:11:30
No one has seen or heard from her since.
00:11:34
Many people, especially her children,
00:11:37
are convinced that something bad happened to Jean
00:11:40
and that her fiance, Al, was somehow involved.
00:11:43
What follows is Al's side of the story
00:11:46
and his account of the day that Jean disappeared.
00:11:51
According to Al, they were just about to check out
00:11:53
of their hotel when Jean wanted to play her lucky slot
00:11:57
machine just one more time.
00:11:59
He told us that he dropped her off
00:12:01
at a side entrance of a nearby casino
00:12:04
and went to find a parking place.
00:12:07
When I did not find one, then I
00:12:10
returned to the valet parking.
00:12:12
Can my wife pick up the car later?
00:12:14
Thank you.
00:12:15
AL HENDERSON: Got the ticket, went inside the casino
00:12:19
where Jean was waiting for me.
00:12:21
Here's the claim check for the car.
00:12:23
AL HENDERSON: Our plan was that we would meet back at our hotel
00:12:26
room at a quarter of 12:00.
00:12:30
DENNIS FARINA: Al claims that he left Jean in the casino
00:12:32
at around 9:30 in the morning.
00:12:35
Once outside, he planned to take a taxi back to the hotel.
00:12:40
There was no cab there, so after waiting a couple
00:12:43
of minutes and the cab didn't come, I thought, well,
00:12:45
it would be nice-- I could go play the slots
00:12:49
with her a little bit.
00:12:50
But
00:12:51
DENNIS FARINA: Al found somebody else playing
00:12:53
Jean's favorite slot machine.
00:12:56
AL HENDERSON: I felt, well, because someone was there
00:12:58
playing it, she may have decided to go
00:13:00
shopping or some other thing.
00:13:04
From a quarter of 10:00 to 10:15 I played the machine
00:13:09
that she liked, hoping that she would come back
00:13:12
and I would be able to get up and just say,
00:13:14
here's your machine.
00:13:15
Have fun.
00:13:21
Can you take these bags to security?
00:13:23
We're checking out.
00:13:25
DENNIS FARINA: Al checked out of the hotel around noon
00:13:27
and returned to the casino to look for Jean.
00:13:30
When I saw that the car was right where it had been left
00:13:34
and spoke to the valet, nobody had
00:13:38
brought a ticket for the car, then I began to become alarmed.
00:13:45
DENNIS FARINA: Al says he thoroughly searched the lobby,
00:13:47
the shops, and the gaming area, but he
00:13:49
says he could not find Jean.
00:13:53
Over the next few days, Al distributed
00:13:56
thousands of these flyers in the Laughlin area.
00:13:59
Despite a $25,000 reward, no one called.
00:14:03
After a certain amount of time,
00:14:06
I had to figure that something terrible has happened.
00:14:13
DENNIS FARINA: Jean's children thought the same thing,
00:14:16
but they are convinced that Henderson
00:14:18
knows more than he's saying.
00:14:21
The more we find out about what supposedly happened as
00:14:26
compared to what can be verified,
00:14:28
that less I'm inclined to believe that he's
00:14:31
telling the full truth.
00:14:33
In my opinion, Al has not said everything that had happened,
00:14:38
and the reason I say that is because number one,
00:14:42
the story has changed a couple of times.
00:14:45
DENNIS FARINA: Al originally told police
00:14:47
that he dropped Jean off in front of the casino
00:14:50
and gave her the valet ticket there.
00:14:53
But Al told us that he left Jean at a side entrance
00:14:57
and gave her the ticket inside the Casino.
00:15:02
Within a couple of days, or within a day,
00:15:05
I knew that he was involved.
00:15:09
In my heart I know he was involved.
00:15:13
DENNIS FARINA: Police knew the casino had surveillance cameras
00:15:15
that monitored every square inch of the casino 24 hours a day.
00:15:20
It was time to verify Al Henderson's story.
00:15:26
Al had said that a valet parked his Cadillac
00:15:28
and that he entered the Casino a little after of 9:00.
00:15:32
Surveillance tapes confirmed this.
00:15:35
Beyond this point, Henderson's story and the surveillance
00:15:38
footage do not match up.
00:15:41
This tape shows two views of the area
00:15:43
where he says he gave Jean the valet ticket
00:15:46
and where they supposedly walked around.
00:15:49
I have reviewed four of those tapes of the areas
00:15:52
that Mr. Henderson said that they were in.
00:15:55
And the tapes that I have reviewed,
00:15:57
the surveillance tape that I have reviewed,
00:15:58
we do not see Jeannie in any of those tapes.
00:16:02
I can't really comment on that.
00:16:04
I can only tell you what happened.
00:16:07
I accept no responsibility for what
00:16:10
the tapes show or don't show, because I
00:16:14
am not an expert in that field.
00:16:15
I can just tell you what happened.
00:16:18
DENNIS FARINA: Al also said that he had waited for Jean
00:16:20
at her favorite slot machine.
00:16:23
In examining the tapes for the time frame Al
00:16:26
give us, 9:45 to approximate 10:15, the machines that he
00:16:31
told security was her favorite machine,
00:16:34
we do not see Al playing those machines.
00:16:38
Well, the only response to that
00:16:39
is that he was evidently looking at the tape
00:16:43
of the wrong machine.
00:16:45
I have checked with the surveillance personnel
00:16:48
for the hotel, and they have advised me
00:16:51
that this is the group of machines
00:16:52
that Al Henderson told the security personnel it
00:16:56
was Jeannie's favorite machine.
00:16:58
DENNIS FARINA: Investigators began to wonder if Jean
00:17:01
had been in Laughlin at all.
00:17:03
Eventually, they found a waitress
00:17:05
who had served Al and Jean on the day they arrived.
00:17:10
Other than the coffee shop, we have nobody seeing
00:17:14
Jeannie in the Laughlin area.
00:17:18
DENNIS FARINA: The question remained, where
00:17:20
was Jean between the Monday sighting
00:17:22
and Thursday when she disappeared?
00:17:25
A few weeks later, a witness came
00:17:27
forward with a possible answer.
00:17:32
A friend of Jean's claimed that she saw the couple
00:17:35
150 miles away from Laughlin.
00:17:38
They were at a gas station in their home
00:17:40
town of Apple Valley, the day before Jean
00:17:43
was reported missing.
00:17:45
The witness remembered the time because they were en route
00:17:49
to a school function that would have been only at that time,
00:17:54
and pinpointed the time and date.
00:17:58
DENNIS FARINA: But Al says they were both in Laughlin,
00:18:01
and there are phone records to prove it.
00:18:04
I've provided several people with copies of my telephone log
00:18:09
from Call USA, showing that I made a call from Laughlin
00:18:13
to the Victorville area at a little bit
00:18:16
after 3:00 on that day.
00:18:19
I had another call, I think it was at 6:59 on that day.
00:18:24
So you've got less than four hours,
00:18:27
and it's physically impossible, even if all you did
00:18:31
was drive from Laughlin and turn around and go back,
00:18:34
you can't do it in less than six hours.
00:18:37
DENNIS FARINA: Phone records verify the calls were made
00:18:40
from Laughlin on Wednesday.
00:18:42
Also, Al's bookkeeper told us both
00:18:44
he and Jean called from Laughlin the same Wednesday evening.
00:18:49
So we discussed various things,
00:18:51
and then he says, well, just a minute, Jeannie wants to say hi
00:18:54
too.
00:18:56
So Jeannie got on the phone and she was just happier than happy
00:19:01
could be, because she had run into a stroke of luck
00:19:06
on one of the poker machines.
00:19:09
DENNIS FARINA: Less than 24 hours later, Jean Moore
00:19:12
was reported missing.
00:19:14
Unequivocally, I had nothing to do with the disappearance
00:19:18
of Jean Moore.
00:19:19
I had offered this $25,000 reward.
00:19:24
I think that my net worth has gone down from around $2.5
00:19:28
million to $1 million.
00:19:30
If I could get her back I'd give the whole $1 million.
00:19:33
I would do anything to get her back.
00:19:37
DENNIS FARINA: Jean Moore's disappearance
00:19:38
has no explanation.
00:19:41
How could a woman simply vanish from a crowded casino
00:19:44
in broad daylight.
00:19:46
The family says they won't stop searching

00:20:02
Next, can a traumatic car crash trigger psychic powers?
00:20:08
Two accident victims say yes.
00:20:21
Can an intense trauma trigger psychic
00:20:23
powers that allow us to see things that others can't?
00:20:28
John Holland and Elizabeth Joyce were nearly
00:20:30
killed in separate car accidents,
00:20:33
which they say left them with strange psychic gifts.
00:20:41
Los Angeles, California-- John Holland's life
00:20:48
is about to change forever.
00:21:06
John was dazed but not seriously injured.
00:21:09
And then the following day, he began to feel strange.
00:21:13
I started noticing kind of like electricity
00:21:16
building up in my body, like, I don't want to say a power,
00:21:19
but it was more like a surge of energy was building.
00:21:23
I just felt that my body had too much energy in it.
00:21:27
That's the only way I could describe it.
00:21:29
DENNIS FARINA: As a child, John was
00:21:30
interested in psychic phenomena, but it
00:21:32
wasn't until his accident that he knew he had a gift.
00:21:40
At his work he was able to predict a stranger's birthday.
00:21:45
It would just come out of my mouth, straight out.
00:21:46
And I had to learn how to stop that.
00:21:49
DENNIS FARINA: John says his predictions
00:21:50
became so accurate that co-workers
00:21:53
became frightened of him.
00:21:55
Holland's boss eventually asked that he
00:21:57
stop making predictions.
00:21:59
I'm not out to prove anything, OK?
00:22:02
This is what happened to me.
00:22:03
This is what comes out of me.
00:22:05
And this is-- people come back and confirm.
00:22:09
Car accidents and other sudden events
00:22:11
that shake up a person's body, and of course the inner body,
00:22:15
called the aura, have, on occasion, caused
00:22:18
that person to become psychic.
00:22:19
There are a number of cases on record,
00:22:21
there's also a case of a man who fell off a ladder,
00:22:23
and as a result became a well-known psychic.
00:22:29
DENNIS FARINA: A few years after his accident,
00:22:31
John began seeing clients professionally.
00:22:34
He claims his powers intensified and that he now could
00:22:38
communicate with the dead.
00:22:41
A client, named Adriane, who came to see me,
00:22:44
and her dad passed away, sadly.
00:22:47
Basically she wanted to know, where is he?
00:22:50
What is he doing right now?
00:22:51
So what happened-- her dad came and told me to tell her to look
00:22:55
in a book on the bookshelf.
00:22:58
He described the bookcase, he described the location
00:23:01
of a book, he said, and there's going to be something,
00:23:05
a message from your father in this book it.
00:23:09
It was unclear if he meant the book.
00:23:11
He said, no, there's a message in it.
00:23:13
A piece of paper, a message from your father that will let you
00:23:16
know that he's OK.
00:23:18
DENNIS FARINA: It took two weeks.
00:23:21
Finally, Adriane got the courage to open the book.
00:23:24
John was right.
00:23:25
Inside was a poem written by her father 28 years ago.
00:23:32
John believes that if not for the accident,
00:23:35
he would never have known that the note was there.
00:23:42
Saddle River, New Jersey-- Elizabeth
00:23:49
Joyce and her son, Jeff, were badly
00:23:52
injured in a car accident.
00:23:56
Elizabeth shielded Jeff from the impact,
00:23:59
but she suffered massive injuries.
00:24:07
On the way to the hospital, Elizabeth's heart
00:24:09
stopped beating three times.
00:24:13
And during those blackouts, she says that she was
00:24:15
reunited with dead relatives.
00:24:21
ELIZABETH JOYCE: On the left with my stepson.
00:24:23
On the right with my husband.
00:24:25
They talked to me with their mind.
00:24:27
You have to go back, you have to go back.
00:24:32
DENNIS FARINA: Elizabeth survived the accident
00:24:34
without any permanent physical disabilities,
00:24:37
but she was worried about neurological damage.
00:24:40
I started having a tingling sensation across my shoulders
00:24:44
and up my neck, and I started having blackouts.
00:24:47
DENNIS FARINA: Soon after the accident,
00:24:49
Elizabeth began having the same frightening dream
00:24:52
over and over again.
00:24:54
ELIZABETH JOYCE: It was an explosion.
00:24:58
I saw a house, I saw a body, I saw it go out the roof.
00:25:01
I was aware of oil wells, I was aware of a trailer
00:25:04
park and a fence.
00:25:06
It was so real to me, and in my head I would hear,
00:25:10
your aunt died.
00:25:11
She's in Houston, Texas.
00:25:12
DENNIS FARINA: But Elizabeth didn't have
00:25:14
an aunt who lived in Houston.
00:25:16
After having the dream every night for three weeks,
00:25:19
she told her social worker, Brenda Hayes, about it.
00:25:23
Brenda was amazed, because the home Elizabeth was describing
00:25:28
was actually Brenda's aunt's home in Houston.
00:25:32
And there had been an explosion there a week earlier.
00:25:38
There was a pipeline explosion on her property,
00:25:42
and they haven't been able to find her body
00:25:45
or find any remains to identify what happened to her.
00:25:52
I started to explain to her what the setup was,
00:25:56
and she said, no wait, I'll draw you a picture.
00:26:01
DENNIS FARINA: Elizabeth drew the house perfectly.
00:26:03
She then pointed to a section of tall grass near an oil
00:26:07
well where the body of Brenda's aunt would be found.
00:26:11
Jenny?
00:26:12
It's Brenda.
00:26:14
DENNIS FARINA: The Houston Police were called.
00:26:16
Within an hour, they found a body.
00:26:18
It was Brenda's aunt.
00:26:22
This wouldn't be the last time Elizabeth's newly discovered
00:26:25
powers would solve a mystery.
00:26:27
When Exxon President, Sidney J Reso,
00:26:29
was kidnapped from his home in New York,
00:26:31
Elizabeth Joyce had a vision.
00:26:34
She called the police.
00:26:37
I'm not a fan of psychics, and I've come
00:26:40
across many, many psychics.
00:26:42
But in this particular case with Elizabeth Joyce,
00:26:46
I did find her to be very, very accurate.
00:26:49
ELIZABETH JOYCE: In black and white
00:26:50
I saw a blonde-haired woman in a jogging suit
00:26:53
running behind the car, falling and screaming for help.
00:26:56
I saw the man get out of the car to go over and help this woman.
00:27:01
I saw a man come around from the bushes.
00:27:04
I saw him grab this man that had gotten out of the Cadillac
00:27:08
and put a gun to his head and forced him into a white van.
00:27:12
I knew that it was Reso.
00:27:16
DENNIS FARINA: For six weeks, Elizabeth talked to the FBI
00:27:19
every day, giving them more information.
00:27:23
They said, they're putting him in a trunk,
00:27:25
and they're taking him off a main road.
00:27:28
And they're going to dig a shallow grave.
00:27:30
And he said, describe it to me.
00:27:31
Oh, I said, it's between two pine trees.
00:27:33
And it's in a narrow space between two pine trees,
00:27:36
and it's off a main road, either the Garden State Parkway ,
00:27:39
or the New Jersey Turnpike.
00:27:41
DENNIS FARINA: The FBI won't comment on Elizabeth's
00:27:43
information, however, Sidney's Reso's body was found
00:27:47
exactly where she predicted.
00:27:49
Sidney's Reso's remains were in a three-foot
00:27:52
deep sandy grave in the depths of the Pine Barrens.
00:27:57
DENNIS FARINA: Elizabeth says that her information
00:27:59
also helped catch the killers.
00:28:02
I don't try to ever convince anyone that there is such
00:28:05
a thing as psychic sensitivity.
00:28:07
I let them find it for themselves.
00:28:10
I'm there to help others if they are open to being helped.
00:28:13
If I can reach one person that it helps them change their life
00:28:17
for the better, and they know things about themselves more,
00:28:22
or if they know that we all go on, then I've done my job.
00:28:26
DENNIS FARINA: John Holland and Elizabeth Joyce
00:28:28
continue to use their powers to help others.
00:28:31
Do they really have psychic abilities?
00:28:34
Just ask the people they've helped.
00:28:36
They certainly thing so.
00:28:43
Coming up, innocent neighbors are
00:28:45
caught in the crossfire when a murderous husband
00:28:48
attacks his wife.
00:29:00
Talladega, Alabama--
00:29:05
All right, well thanks for the ride, girl.
00:29:07
DENNIS FARINA: Early one evening,
00:29:08
Geraldine George, a 36-year-old mother of two,
00:29:12
returned home from work.
00:29:15
She had been separated from her abusive husband, Larry George,
00:29:19
for six months.
00:29:20
Even though there was a restraining order against him,
00:29:23
he continued to harass her.
00:29:27
That evening his obsession turned deadly.
00:29:36
Geraldine went inside her apartment
00:29:38
and dropped her belongings off.
00:29:40
DET TOM BOWERMAN: She walked next door
00:29:41
to Janice Maurice's apartment and Ralph Swing's apartment.
00:29:48
It's Geraldine.
00:29:49
DENNIS FARINA: Geraldine was friendly with her next door
00:29:51
neighbor.
00:29:52
Janice had agreed to watch Geraldine's kids
00:29:55
while she worked.
00:29:59
All right, say goodbye to everyone.
00:30:00
Say goodbye.
00:30:02
DET TOM BOWERMAN: She went in, sent her kids home,
00:30:04
talked briefly with Janice.
00:30:06
It was rather brief because Janice was on the telephone
00:30:09
with her mother.
00:30:11
Geraldine, after talking briefly with Janice,
00:30:14
walked back next door.
00:30:16
And as she entered her apartment,
00:30:18
Larry George was already inside the apartment
00:30:20
talking to her kids.
00:30:22
You know you're not supposed to be here.
00:30:25
We've been through this before.
00:30:26
You want me to call the police again?
00:30:28
I want you out of my house.
00:30:30
I don't want those people taking care of my kids.
00:30:32
You don't tell me what to do anymore.
00:30:34
You gonna listen to me.
00:30:37
Put the gun away.
00:30:38
Honey, I want to go upstairs.
00:30:40
You call your granddaddy and tell him that Larry is here.
00:30:42
Go on.
00:30:45
Larry, no!
00:30:46
Let go!
00:30:56
Janice!
00:30:57
DENNIS FARINA: Geraldine ran next door for help.
00:31:01
Janice was still talking to her mother.
00:31:03
Call the police!
00:31:04
Larry's next door and he has a gun!
00:31:06
I heard a woman's voice yelling, Janice, Janice,
00:31:11
call the police.
00:31:13
So I asked Jan, who was that?
00:31:15
And she said, that girl that just left here.
00:31:17
What's the matter?
00:31:18
She said, I don't know.
00:31:19
Let me call you back, OK?
00:31:21
Bye-bye.
00:31:22
And that's the last time I heard her voice.
00:31:29
DENNIS FARINA: Larry George shot Janice in the chest
00:31:31
before she could call the police.
00:31:36
Larry, please stop!
00:31:38
Then Then, in front of Janice's two children,
00:31:41
he shot Geraldine as she cowered on the floor.
00:31:51
Janice's boyfriend, Ralph Swain, heard the commotion
00:31:54
and ran downstairs.
00:31:56
He was shot in the back of the head.
00:32:04
Then Larry George calmly walked out of the apartment
00:32:08
and disappeared.
00:32:12
Janice Morris was pronounced dead at the scene,
00:32:14
and Ralph Swain died a short time later.
00:32:18
This murder was stupid.
00:32:20
I mean, Ralph or Janice, neither one knew Larry.
00:32:24
They were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
00:32:29
DENNIS FARINA: Geraldine George survived the shooting,
00:32:31
but was paralyzed from the waist down.
00:32:37
The next day, sheriff's deputies discovered
00:32:39
a car hidden in the bushes at a campsite six miles out of town.
00:32:44
It was registered to Larry George.
00:32:48
DET TOM BOWERMAN: He had been living in the car.
00:32:50
There was a lot of clothing in the car.
00:32:52
We found a notebook where it appeared that Mr. George had
00:32:55
been keeping a diary as to who came
00:32:58
and went at his wife's apartment,
00:32:59
and camouflage clothing.
00:33:03
I want Larry George to pay for what he did.
00:33:15
DENNIS FARINA: Update: After we aired this story,
00:33:18
an "Unsolved Mysteries" viewer claimed
00:33:21
to have seen Larry George fishing on the banks
00:33:23
of a river in Delaware.
00:33:25
Two detectives were sent to investigate.
00:33:29
This is the one we first encountered
00:33:31
Larry George at, right here.
00:33:33
We began a conversation with him about fishing.
00:33:35
And it was at this time, myself and Detective Pinkett
00:33:37
made eye contact, and I identified myself
00:33:40
as a police officer to Larry.
00:33:42
At this time, a brief struggle ensued right about here.
00:33:45
We all three fell to the ground here.
00:33:48
We got back to our feet still struggling, and at that point
00:33:51
we just turned threw Larry into the water.
00:33:54
DENNIS FARINA: George tried to run,
00:33:56
but back up units quickly corned him.
00:33:59
Finally, he surrendered.
00:34:02
At George's campsite, police found
00:34:05
a generator, a stove, a spear gun, and a sawed off shotgun.
00:34:11
He knew he was wanted for murder.
00:34:12
He wasn't going to be taken alive.
00:34:14
If he would have put himself in his hide out,
00:34:16
and if we had discovered it, that
00:34:18
probably would have gunfire and officers would have been hurt.
00:34:22
DENNIS FARINA: Seven months after his arrest,
00:34:24
Larry George was tried and found guilty of capital murder.
00:34:28
He was sentenced to die in the electric chair.
00:34:38
In a moment, the story of a fortune in stolen gold
00:34:42
hidden in the rugged hills of Montana.
00:34:55
We recently told you the story of an escaped prisoner named
00:34:58
Robert Gerald Watson, who had been arrested
00:35:01
for kidnapping and rape.
00:35:05
In Tennessee's Hamblin County Jail,
00:35:07
Watson and two other inmates were cleaning the common room
00:35:11
known as the slammer.
00:35:14
When they were done, they signaled to a nearby deputy.
00:35:24
During the struggle, the jail's automatic outside doors opened.
00:35:29
One of the inmates was overpowered by the deputy.
00:35:32
A second was captured later that night.
00:35:37
But Watson made a clean getaway.
00:35:42
Update-- Monroe County, Tennessee-- a viewer tip
00:35:50
led police to a remote area of Monroe County,
00:35:54
where they found Robert Gerald Watson.
00:35:56
He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and assault.
00:36:00
Given Mr. Watson had already been on the run
00:36:03
for over two years, and we'd had no leads on him,
00:36:05
Gerald Watson's arrest was a direct result of the "Unsolved
00:36:08
Mysteries" program.
00:36:10
When I went to Knoxville to pick Mr. Watson up to bring him
00:36:12
back, he had made the statement to me in the car,
00:36:15
he said, yeah, I seen you on TV.
00:36:18
He said, I knew you guys coming in to get me.
00:36:22
DENNIS FARINA: Three months later, Watson
00:36:23
was convicted on all charges.
00:36:30
He was given a sentence of 10 to 25 years in prison.
00:36:46
It was a legendary treasure buried in the Montana hills,
00:36:50
or so the story goes.
00:36:53
In 1863, a crooked sheriff and his gang went to the gallows,
00:36:57
refusing to reveal where they had hidden their stolen gold.
00:37:01
It's a tale of murder, money and betrayal.
00:37:08
Bannock, Montana-- when gold was discovered
00:37:15
in Alder Gulch, Montana, hundreds of prospectors
00:37:19
descended on the town.
00:37:23
Riches were being made, and people
00:37:26
wanted to get in on them.
00:37:27
That's why there was such a large gang of outlaws
00:37:31
around every mining camp.
00:37:33
Hey, fellas, we got company.
00:37:36
What can we do for you guys?
00:37:45
DENNIS FARINA: In the spring of 1863,
00:37:47
a group of those outlaws known as the Road Agent Gang nearly
00:37:51
wiped out the prospectors.
00:37:53
It has been said they stole more than 1,000 pounds of gold.
00:37:58
Henry Plummer, the town sheriff, was also secretly
00:38:02
the leader of the outlaws.
00:38:05
Henry Plummer was an ex-convict.
00:38:07
Ironically, he had just been released
00:38:09
four years earlier from a brand new
00:38:11
California prison, San Quentin.
00:38:15
MAN: Henry Plummer was a very pleasant looking individual.
00:38:19
He was the only man in Bannock, practically,
00:38:22
that always tipped his hat to a lady
00:38:24
when he saw her on the street.
00:38:25
Well, you could call him the consummate con man of his day.
00:38:29
So he was able to con people into thinking
00:38:33
he was a competent man to be the sheriff.
00:38:37
And of course he knew that being a sheriff
00:38:41
would give him a perfect cover.
00:38:44
Boys, we got to stage leaving Bannock in two days.
00:38:48
It's full of gold, and I want that stage.
00:38:50
DENNIS FARINA: Plummer and his gang
00:38:51
targeted miners trying to transport their gold
00:38:54
to a major rail head.
00:38:55
Put your hands up, boys!
00:38:57
We want the gold!
00:39:05
DENNIS FARINA: It's estimated that in four months,
00:39:07
Henry Plummer and the Road Agents
00:39:09
killed more than 120 miners, and stole what today
00:39:13
would be $6 million in gold.
00:39:20
Finally, in December of 1863, the gang went too far.
00:39:26
A local rancher found the body and brought it into town.
00:39:33
MAN: And that was enough for them.
00:39:35
They formed a posse, and during the next six weeks
00:39:39
of vigilante's work, picking people up giving them a trial,
00:39:44
and we know they hanged about 22 men, at least.
00:39:49
DENNIS FARINA: When the outlaws were caught,
00:39:50
they started pointing fingers at each other.
00:39:57
One Road Agent who was about to be hanged
00:39:59
identified Henry Plummer as the gang's leader.
00:40:03
I want you all to know that Henry's
00:40:05
the one that planned all this.
00:40:07
He's the one to run all the Road Agents.
00:40:09
He's the man you want.
00:40:17
DENNIS FARINA: The vigilante posse raced to Plummer's house.
00:40:24
What's going on, boys?
00:40:26
Get your hands up!
00:40:28
DENNIS FARINA: Plummer was marched to a scaffold
00:40:30
that, ironically, he built himself.
00:40:32
But before he was hanged, he made an unusual request.
00:40:36
Give me two hours and a horse, and I'll
00:40:39
bring back my weight in gold.
00:40:40
You made that mistake once.
00:40:46
DENNIS FARINA: Henry Plummer died without telling anyone
00:40:49
where the treasure was buried.
00:40:52
Immediately after his death, prospector's started searching
00:40:56
for Plummer's buried treasure.
00:40:58
In the early 1900s, two mysterious gold hunters
00:41:01
may have found that.
00:41:05
MAN: They went into a local store that had a vault,
00:41:08
and asked if they could leave this box in there all night.
00:41:12
And one of the men stayed there, riding shotgun on the vault.
00:41:16
The next morning, they disappeared.
00:41:19
Nobody knew who they were, where they went, or what they dug up.
00:41:23
DENNIS FARINA: Even if one box of Plummer's gold was found,
00:41:26
there's probably a lot more out there.
00:41:30
Two local men, Scott Jones and Bill Chappy,
00:41:32
have been hunting for the treasure for years.
00:41:35
They're confident that Plummer's gold still lies
00:41:38
buried somewhere in the area.
00:41:41
LOCAL MAN: Nobody would bury all their eggs in one basket.
00:41:44
So it's understandable that he has it someplace
00:41:46
where he has access to it.
00:41:48
I bet there's 1,000 pounds or better, in different places
00:41:51
maybe, from Virgina City to Bannock.
00:41:57
DENNIS FARINA: Perhaps the location
00:41:58
of Plummer's buried gold will never be found,
00:42:02
if it was ever there at all.
