March 13, 2021 / 21:16

This episode covers the murder of funeral director Lonnie Turner in Navasota, Texas, with discussions on cell phone records, family dynamics, and forensic evidence.

Lonnie Turner was a respected figure in his community, known for helping those in need. His son, Lonnie Jr., discovered his father shot in the bedroom and called the police. The investigation revealed inconsistencies in the accounts given by Lonnie Jr. and his uncle Lawson.

Police found a nine-millimeter handgun under Lonnie Jr.'s mattress, which matched the murder weapon. Gunshot residue was found on Lonnie Jr.'s hands, raising suspicions about his involvement. However, he maintained an alibi for the night of the murder.

DNA evidence from a mask found near the crime scene eventually led investigators to James White, Lonnie Turner's godson, who had a motive related to theft. White's DNA was found on the mask, and he later confessed to being involved in the murder.

In July 2005, James White accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The episode highlights the complexities of the case, including the impact on Lonnie Jr.'s reputation and the family's funeral business.

cell phone records provided some
00:00:18
important evidence
00:00:20
there was a whole lot more to this story
00:00:21
than what was originally thought
00:00:23
but a homemade mask found near the scene
00:00:26
indicated
00:00:27
the victim and killer knew one another

somewhere we've made a mistake

lonnie turner
00:00:46
was an important figure lonnie was the
00:00:50
owner
00:00:51

00:00:53
in navasota
00:00:54
he was a well-respected member of the
00:00:57
community at large
00:00:58
he would help the needy i mean if you
00:01:01
didn't have money or you didn't have
00:01:03
insurance to take care of a service he
00:01:05
would tote the note for you
00:01:07
a lot of times he went unpaid
00:01:10
and lonnie was one of the first
00:01:12
african-american members of the city
00:01:14
council
00:01:15
and the school board he broke down a lot
00:01:18

00:01:19
good businessman all-around good guy
00:01:23
one november night shortly before
00:01:25
midnight
00:01:26
lonnie's son arrived home and discovered
00:01:30
the light bulb had been unscrewed near
00:01:33
the door
00:01:34
on the back porch he noticed the tv is
00:01:38
only the den
00:01:39
the lights are on and he goes back to
00:01:40
dad's room
00:01:44
he saw lights on under his father's
00:01:46
bedroom door which was unusual for this
00:01:48
time of night
00:01:51
so he looked inside
00:01:57
he noticed what appeared to be some
00:01:58
blood on the wall he saw that his father
00:02:01
was there
00:02:02
in an area between the edge of the bed
00:02:05
and the bedroom wall he gets scared
00:02:08
and he runs to his room and he lifts up
00:02:10
his mattress to get a gun
00:02:14
then he ran outside and called police
00:02:26

00:02:33
and everything in a panic
00:02:37
lonnie jr got in his car and drove to
00:02:39
the police station
00:02:44
when police arrived at the turner's home
00:02:46
a short time later
00:02:47
the victim's brother lawson answered the
00:02:50
door
00:02:53
lawson said he just arrived and when he
00:02:56
got there he hadn't seen his brother or
00:02:58
his nephew lonnie jr
00:03:02
and so he was going to stay with his
00:03:03
brother overnight he goes through the
00:03:05
house and he doesn't see
00:03:06
lonnie senior so he's thinking he's out
00:03:10
on a call
00:03:11
so he was gonna go ahead and get ready
00:03:12
and get ready for bed because he had to
00:03:13
get up the next morning
00:03:15
they took him out and treated him as if
00:03:17
he may be the shooter
00:03:19
police found lonnie senior dead on the
00:03:23
floor of his bedroom
00:03:24
shot twice at close range
00:03:29
they found two spent nine millimeter
00:03:31
shell casings
00:03:33
in the police cruiser officers told
00:03:36
lawson
00:03:37
that his brother had been murdered
00:03:40
[Music]
00:03:44
this is unbelievable
00:03:51
oh no i was out there that night and he
00:03:55
just
00:03:56
he cried like a baby he was extremely
00:03:59
upset
00:04:00
police found no signs of forced entry
00:04:03
nothing was stolen
00:04:04
even though there was seven thousand
00:04:06
dollars in cash in a safe
00:04:08
in an adjacent room the safe was
00:04:11
actually open
00:04:12
there were firearms all over the house
00:04:14
and none of those items seemed to have
00:04:16
been touched
00:04:17
at the police station the victim's son
00:04:20
loni junior told police he had no
00:04:22
idea who would have done this do you
00:04:25
know anybody would want to hurt your dad
00:04:27
i don't want to do something like this
00:04:28
nobody no nobody
00:04:30
just enemies it you know but police were
00:04:33
confused by the stories given by the
00:04:35
victim's brother lawson
00:04:38
and by the victim's son who'd left the
00:04:40
scene after
00:04:41
calling police and those stories were
00:04:44
about to get
00:04:46
even stranger
00:04:51
virtually everyone on the navasota texas
00:04:54
police force knew lonnie turner
00:04:57
he ran the town's most successful
00:04:59
funeral home
00:05:00
and was a civic leader we spent time
00:05:04
at the funeral homes we respected him
00:05:06
and respected the fact that
00:05:07
he was not only a friend to us but he
00:05:09
was a leader and a role model
00:05:12
the crime scene gave every indication
00:05:14
that lonnie was in bed asleep
00:05:16
but woke up saw he was in danger and
00:05:19
lifted his arm to protect himself
00:05:22
the first shot hit him in the forearm as
00:05:25
the shooting began he had actually
00:05:26
rolled
00:05:27
to his left during the shooting and roll
00:05:29
completely off of the bed
00:05:31
the second shot hit him in the chest
00:05:35
start looking at people that knew him or
00:05:37
had a reason to kill him
00:05:39
investigators were troubled by the
00:05:41
movements of the victim's son
00:05:43
lonnie jr and the victim's brother
00:05:46
lawson
00:05:46
on the night of the murder lonnie jr
00:05:50
said he came home found his father
00:05:52
injured in the bedroom
00:05:54
then grabbed his gun and cell phone
00:05:57
called police
00:05:58
and drove to the police station by his
00:06:01
own admission
00:06:02
lonnie said he called police without
00:06:04
even checking to see if his father was
00:06:06
still
00:06:06
alive we started asking him
00:06:10
well why didn't you go check on your dad
00:06:11
you know was he still breathing
00:06:13
was he trying to say anything to you and
00:06:15
lonnie didn't even do that
00:06:17
it just didn't make sense it didn't ring
00:06:19
clear at all
00:06:20
it was one of the strangest stories i've
00:06:22
had from a murder suspect
00:06:23
and there have been some pretty strange
00:06:24
stories even stranger
00:06:27
was what happened next shortly after
00:06:30
lonnie jr left
00:06:31
but before police arrived the victim's
00:06:35
brother lawson
00:06:36
claimed he arrived from out of town and
00:06:38
let himself into the house
00:06:40
he was going to stay with his brother
00:06:41
overnight lawson was scheduled to
00:06:43
referee
00:06:44
college football in houston the next day
00:06:49
when he heard no answer he assumed his
00:06:52
brother was out on a funeral call
00:06:53
picking up a body
00:06:55
so when police arrived he was completely
00:06:58
unaware
00:06:59
a crime had been committed lonnie turner
00:07:02
was killed with a nine millimeter weapon
00:07:06
interestingly police found a nine
00:07:08
millimeter
00:07:09
taurus handgun under lonnie jr's
00:07:12
mattress
00:07:13
in his bedroom test fired from that gun
00:07:17
were compared to a bullet recovered from
00:07:20
lonnie's senior's body
00:07:23
i was able to determine that the
00:07:25
question bullet from autopsy was fired
00:07:27
in the submitted taurus pistol
00:07:31
fingerprints on that gun matched lonnie
00:07:34
jr's
00:07:36
when questioned lonnie told police he
00:07:39
wasn't surprised his nine-millimeter gun
00:07:41
was used as the murder weapon he claimed
00:07:43
the gun had been stolen two weeks
00:07:46
earlier
00:07:47
we thought that was kind of strange he
00:07:49
never reported that gun stolen
00:07:51
to law enforcement all of a sudden
00:07:53
reappears underneath the mattress and in
00:07:55
the house
00:07:56
police performed a gunshot residue test
00:07:59
on both the victim's brother
00:08:01
lawson and the victim's son lonnie jr
00:08:06
lawson tested negative he also passed a
00:08:09
polygraph
00:08:10
and he had no motive no real reason for
00:08:13
him to have shot his brother
00:08:16
but gunshot residue was found on lani's
00:08:18
hands
00:08:19
he said this probably happened because
00:08:22
he grabbed his 38 caliber handgun for
00:08:24
protection
00:08:25
before calling police to check
00:08:28
lonnie's alibi investigators first had
00:08:31
to estimate the time of his father's
00:08:34
murder
00:08:34
we started checking to see who last
00:08:36
spoke delaney senior
00:08:38
we determined that he spoke to a female
00:08:41
friend of his around 9 15.
00:08:43
and when lawson tried to call his
00:08:45
brother lonnie senior around 10 pm
00:08:48
there was no answer so we believe the
00:08:51
death will be between 9 15 and 10
00:08:52
o'clock
00:08:54
lonnie jr said he had an alibi for the
00:08:57
entire
00:08:58
evening including between 9 15 and 10
00:09:02
pm lonnie claimed he was at a restaurant
00:09:05
with his girlfriend
00:09:06
then went to his girlfriend's house
00:09:09
his presence was verified both at the
00:09:11
restaurant his girlfriend's house and he
00:09:14
left his girlfriend's house somewhere
00:09:15
around 9 40 9 45
00:09:17
that night and from there he went to the
00:09:20
local car wash
00:09:22
it appears that he per his father's
00:09:24
instructions
00:09:25
carried the suburban to a car wash there
00:09:27
and washed the suburban
00:09:29
and we've actually had some witnesses
00:09:31
that verified that information also
00:09:34
but lonnie refused to take a polygraph
00:09:37
he was starting to feel the heat and
00:09:39
knew he was a suspect at that point
00:09:41
the day after the murder investigators
00:09:44
found
00:09:44
a potential clue in a small creek
00:09:48
just 50 yards from the turner's home was
00:09:51
a pair of gloves
00:09:52
and what looked to be a mask
00:09:56
cut from a felt bag they've cut two
00:09:59
holes
00:10:00
in it for the eyes and then a little
00:10:02
area where they can breathe
00:10:03
out the mouth when that evidence was
00:10:05
found it was thought to be a major
00:10:08
a major break in the case masks are good
00:10:10
objects to find dna profiles on
00:10:13
due to the fact that they're in close
00:10:14
proximity to your skin
00:10:16
and also in the mouth region you get
00:10:18
good profile from saliva
00:10:21
police were convinced these items
00:10:25
would identify the killer 21 year old
00:10:32
lonnie turner jr and his father both
00:10:35
lived and worked together
00:10:37
lonnie's senior was grooming his son to
00:10:39
take over his funeral business
00:10:42
lonnie jr was an only child his parents
00:10:45
separated when
00:10:46
he was a teenager according to friends
00:10:49
loni junior didn't fit the mold of a
00:10:52
funeral director
00:10:54
lonnie jr very flashy
00:10:57
flamboyant junior he's the type of guy
00:11:01
that he likes nice things there were a
00:11:04
significant number of rumors that lonnie
00:11:06
jr was selling and bombing fluid on the
00:11:08
street
00:11:10
when cigars and cigarettes laced with
00:11:13
marijuana
00:11:14
or pcp are dipped in embalming fluid
00:11:18
the effects are often intensified
00:11:21
the embalming fluid was a rumor
00:11:24
and it remained a rumor we were never
00:11:26
able to confirm that that was
00:11:28
a that that was a fact as the
00:11:30
beneficiary of his father's estate
00:11:33
lonnie jr stood to inherit the funeral
00:11:35
home
00:11:36
and all of his father's assets i think
00:11:39
junior saw the business
00:11:41
as sort of his cash cow and it would be
00:11:44
able to finance his lifestyle
00:11:46
dna analyst jennifer watson examined the
00:11:50
mask
00:11:50
and gloves found 50 yards away from
00:11:53
lonnie turner's home
00:11:55
near a creek police believed
00:11:58
they had been worn by the killer she
00:12:01
found
00:12:02
epithelial cells around the holes for
00:12:04
the eyes and
00:12:05
mouth and was able to generate a dna
00:12:08
profile
00:12:09
which she compared to lonnie jr's dna
00:12:13
the results surprised everyone
00:12:17
the result was that lonnie turner jr was
00:12:19
excluded as a contributor to that
00:12:21
profile
00:12:22
the dna from the mask was also compared
00:12:26
to the victim's brother
00:12:27
lawson his dna also
00:12:31
did not match in looking for other
00:12:34
suspects
00:12:35
police knew one thing the killer was
00:12:38
familiar with the house
00:12:41
and the family lonnie senior always left
00:12:44
the back door open
00:12:45
we figured that somebody knew about the
00:12:46
layout of the house knew that the back
00:12:48
door was
00:12:49
unlocked and there was only one other
00:12:52
person who fit
00:12:53
that profile 19 year old
00:12:57
james white lonnie senior's godson
00:13:00
who often helped out at the funeral home
00:13:04
he did work around the turner funeral
00:13:06
home in the turner senior home
00:13:08
it's the church that the junior would
00:13:10
have to do
00:13:11
that he may not want to do and then he
00:13:13
would pay my son to do it
00:13:16
four months before the murder james
00:13:19
white was charged with stealing two of
00:13:21
lonnie senior's personal checks
00:13:24
he made them out to himself for a total
00:13:27
of eight thousand dollars in cash
00:13:30
and forged lonnie senior signature
00:13:34
senior was mad at him for doing that and
00:13:36
certainly felt betrayed
00:13:37
but he continued to
00:13:41
embrace white as a godson
00:13:44
but white apparently knew lonnie senior
00:13:47
kept
00:13:47
cash in a bedroom safe he also knew
00:13:51
where lonnie
00:13:52
jr kept his guns
00:13:55
we believed he would have had knowledge
00:13:57
of where it was kept lonnie jr
00:13:59
loves showing off especially that nine
00:14:00
millimeter because it was something
00:14:02
special he bought
00:14:03
for his 21st birthday james white
00:14:06
claimed he spent the entire night of the
00:14:08
murder at a party with two
00:14:10
friends but they didn't corroborate this
00:14:14
story
00:14:15
we confronted a friend and he said
00:14:16
listen james white just called me
00:14:18
said hey lie to the police tell them
00:14:20
that i was with you
00:14:22
this friend said he saw white that night
00:14:25
but not
00:14:25
until 10 30 p.m which gave
00:14:29
white plenty of time to commit the
00:14:32
murder
00:14:36
the prime suspect in the murder of
00:14:38
lonnie turner senior
00:14:39
was his godson james white
00:14:43
white denied any involvement
00:14:46
so investigators compared white's dna to
00:14:49
the dna found on the homemade mask
00:14:52
found near the crime scene
00:14:55
james white's dna was definitely on the
00:14:58
mask
00:14:58
and with the amount of dna that was
00:15:00
present it's likely that he wore that
00:15:03
mask
00:15:03
when i was told that i almost jumped out
00:15:05
of my boots
00:15:07
now james white changed his story
00:15:11
after several hours had passed one of
00:15:13
the people doing the interrogation
00:15:16
threw in lonnie turner jr's name and
00:15:19
it seemed to like turn on a switch in
00:15:21
white and
00:15:22
that's when he started talking about how
00:15:25
he had been set up
00:15:27
white now said that lonnie jr hired him
00:15:30
to kill
00:15:31
his father white said he went into
00:15:34
lonnie's senior's house
00:15:36
and that lonnie jr was with him but he
00:15:38
got cold feet and tried to back out
00:15:41
but lonnie jr literally held a gun to
00:15:44
his head
00:15:44
and threatened to shoot him if he didn't
00:15:47
go through with it
00:16:05
[Music]
00:16:06
really grateful for the children of me
00:16:11
there was only one problem with this
00:16:14
story
00:16:15
lonnie jr had an alibi for the entire
00:16:18
evening he was at a restaurant
00:16:22
at his girlfriend's house then at a car
00:16:25
wash
00:16:26
while driving home records indicate
00:16:28
lonnie jr was on his cell phone
00:16:31
the entire time james white
00:16:35
never said lonnie jr was on his cell
00:16:37
phone
00:16:38
while he was literally holding a gun to
00:16:40
his head
00:16:42
we couldn't put him at the residence you
00:16:43
know committing that crime he was either
00:16:46
with someone was being seen by someone
00:16:48
or was talking someone on the phone
00:16:51
if things were to have happened the way
00:16:53
he said it then junior would have had to
00:16:55
been pointing a gun at his head while
00:16:56
talking on the cell phone at the same
00:16:58
time
00:16:59
the polygraph that was given to him it
00:17:01
came back inconclusive
00:17:03
james david white is not the sharpest
00:17:05
crayon in the box
00:17:07
and i didn't know how much of it was due
00:17:09
to that
00:17:11
or to deception i just didn't know
00:17:14
prosecutors believe
00:17:16
james white needed money and knew lonnie
00:17:19
turner senior
00:17:20
kept cash inside his home
00:17:24
he also knew lonnie jr kept guns
00:17:28
under his bed the evidence suggests
00:17:31
white stole
00:17:32
one of the guns the nine millimeter two
00:17:34
weeks before the murder
00:17:38
prosecutors believe the motive was
00:17:40
burglary
00:17:42
which is why white wore a mask
00:17:45
in the event he was seen white
00:17:48
unscrewed the light bulb on the porch
00:17:51
entered the house
00:17:52
and probably thought no one was home
00:17:58
when he opened the bedroom door looking
00:18:01
for valuables
00:18:02
he found that wasn't the case
00:18:06
one bullet entered lonnie's forearm and
00:18:10
he tried to cover his face
00:18:12
the other hit him in the chest killing
00:18:14
him instantly
00:18:16
prosecutors believe white panicked left
00:18:19
the money and valuables behind
00:18:21
but returned the gun to lonnie jr's
00:18:24
bedroom
00:18:27
then threw the mask and gloves in a
00:18:29
nearby creek
00:18:31
but the mask still contained enough dna
00:18:35
to tie him to the scene
00:18:42
the other interesting element in this
00:18:44
case was the family member's
00:18:46
movements that night
00:18:49
lonnie jr came home found his father
00:18:52
wounded in the bedroom
00:18:53
grabbed his gun and cell phone called
00:18:56
police then drove
00:18:57
to the police station
00:19:00
[Music]
00:19:06
but before police arrived his uncle
00:19:08
lawson
00:19:09
entered the house since he planned to
00:19:11
spend the night
00:19:14
when he heard no answer he assumed his
00:19:16
brother was out on business
00:19:18
and when police arrived
00:19:22
he was in the kitchen making a sandwich
00:19:24
completely
00:19:25
unaware of the crime
00:19:31
james white's father who was also the
00:19:33
victim's best friend
00:19:35
remains convinced that lonnie jr
00:19:39
was involved i think that it's fair for
00:19:42
my son to be
00:19:43
in prison for this murder because he
00:19:46
said he pulled the trigger
00:19:48
but i would like to see lonnie jr there
00:19:52
also because my son didn't have anything
00:19:55
to profit from this
00:19:56
the junior is the one who profit
00:19:59
everything
00:20:00
in july of 2005 james white accepted a
00:20:04
plea bargain
00:20:06
admitted his complicity in the crime
00:20:09
and was sentenced to 25 years in prison
00:20:12
without the forensic evidence i don't
00:20:14
think we'd be here today talking about
00:20:15
this case i
00:20:16
honestly believe that if it hadn't been
00:20:17
for that dna profile
00:20:19
on that mass we wouldn't have made it
00:20:21
able to make a case
00:20:23
prosecutors admit lonnie jr's story
00:20:26
about what happened
00:20:28
defies belief but the alibi
00:20:31
was what saved him i think there are a
00:20:34
lot of people
00:20:35
today who still believe that
00:20:39
he had something to do with his dad's
00:20:41
death
00:20:42
and it has hurt his reputation
00:20:45
and it has certainly hurt the solid
00:20:48
reputation that his father
00:20:50
worked so hard to build for the family
00:20:53
business
00:20:54
lonnie jr wasn't there that night when
00:20:57
his father was murdered
00:20:58
there's no question about that the
00:21:00
evidence
00:21:01
clears that for me it stands out because
00:21:04
of the twists and turns
00:21:05
it took us some places that i think we
00:21:07
really didn't anticipate when
00:21:09
we began the investigation
