Forensic Files - Season 9, Episode 23 - Saving Face - Full Episode

January 01, 2022 / 21:47

This episode covers the mysterious disappearances of three women in Austin, Texas, including Olivia Estrada and Maria Flores, and the investigation that led to the arrest of Martine Gonzalez.

In 1998, Olivia Estrada, a 54-year-old woman, went missing after a warning call from an unidentified woman prompted her family to check on her. Investigators found blood evidence in her home, indicating a struggle. A photograph of Olivia with an unidentified man named Martine led to the investigation of Gonzalez, who had a criminal history.

Forensic anthropologist Dr. David Glassman and forensic artist Karen Taylor worked on identifying a female body found near Gonzalez's home. Taylor's facial reconstruction helped identify the remains as Sylvia Garcia, Gonzalez's wife, who had also gone missing.

As the investigation continued, the remains of Olivia Estrada and another woman, Maria Flores, were discovered, both linked to Gonzalez. He was charged with three counts of murder, with evidence suggesting he targeted vulnerable women.

The episode highlights the role of forensic science in solving these cases and the emotional impact on the victims' families, particularly Olivia's daughter, who expressed her grief and anger towards Gonzalez.

TL;DR

The episode details the disappearances of three women linked to Martine Gonzalez, who was convicted of their murders in Texas.

a woman in austin texas mysteriously
00:00:09
disappeared without saying anything to
00:00:11
her friends or family
00:00:13
and she wasn't the only one two other
00:00:15
women had also disappeared under similar
00:00:18
circumstances
00:00:20
a tooth a single hair an anthropologist
00:00:24
and a forensic artist implicated a man
00:00:26
who had killed before
00:00:28
in another country

00:00:58
in 1998 54 year old olivia estrada was
00:01:02
going through a very difficult time
00:01:06
she had recently been divorced and was
00:01:08
unemployed the only bright spot in her
00:01:11
life was her family
00:01:13
she was
00:01:14
funny
00:01:17
heart as big as texas or even bigger she
00:01:20
just had compassion
00:01:21
for everyone
00:01:24
one night out of the blue a woman who
00:01:26
refused to identify herself called
00:01:29
olivia's family with a warning
00:01:32
she said to go and check on your mother
00:01:34
that something was wrong with her
00:01:35
so family members went to investigate
00:01:38
her car's there her keys are there her
00:01:40
house is locked something happened
00:01:42
that was against her will
00:01:45
the type of door it was you had to lock
00:01:46
it with a key when you went out
00:01:49
so whoever left last locked it with a
00:01:51
key her keys were inside by the time i
00:01:54
got here
00:01:55
my cousin who lives next door he had
00:01:58
broken into the house to see if my mom
00:02:01
was here and when i looked down
00:02:03
the carpet was soaking wet
00:02:06
like why is the carpet wet
00:02:09
detective bob merrill found traces of
00:02:12
blood in the water-soaked carpet an
00:02:15
obvious sign of a hasty clean-up
00:02:18
so at that point we're going to start
00:02:19
investigating it as a homicide until
00:02:21
you're no different
00:02:23
outside in the carport next to olivia's
00:02:26
car
00:02:27
investigators found evidence of a
00:02:29
struggle
00:02:30
there was a ring
00:02:32
by the tire and he says do you know
00:02:34
whose ring that is and i said yeah
00:02:35
that's my mom's ring so what's it doing
00:02:37
out here
00:02:39
there were traces of blood on the ring
00:02:42
as well as on the inside of olivia's car
00:02:44
but there were no foreign fingerprints
00:02:48
the few clues we did have there at the
00:02:50
house became very crucial
00:02:52
the blood in the house the blood in the
00:02:53
car the blood on the carport the bloody
00:02:56
ring
00:02:57
that was found in the carport
00:02:59
those sort of became
00:03:01
the
00:03:02
factors that determined whether or not
00:03:04
we would be able to turn this into a
00:03:05
homicide case
00:03:07
unfortunately
00:03:09
investigators were not able to trace the
00:03:11
anonymous call made to the estrada
00:03:13
family
00:03:15
it was strange that the woman was never
00:03:17
identified who called she must have been
00:03:19
scared to come forward i don't know
00:03:22
the next day
00:03:24
investigators took a second look around
00:03:26
olivia's home
00:03:28
tucked away in the bottom of a dresser
00:03:30
drawer they found a photograph of olivia
00:03:33
with an unidentified man
00:03:35
and on the back of the photograph was
00:03:37
written the name
00:03:39
martine
00:03:40
no one knew his last name no one knew
00:03:42
where he was from no one knew anything
00:03:44
about the man
00:03:46
but olivia's daughter recalled speaking
00:03:48
with martine on the telephone when she
00:03:51
called to speak with her mother
00:03:53
she said
00:03:54
it was a bizarre conversation
00:03:57
the only thing i remember he told me was
00:03:58
that he wanted to marry my mother
00:04:02
i don't even i mean
00:04:04
she just met him
00:04:05
and i said
00:04:07
my mom will never marry you
00:04:09
i said i don't know who you are who you
00:04:10
think you are but my mom will never
00:04:11
marry you
00:04:14
investigators released the photograph to
00:04:16
the media hoping
00:04:18
that someone could identify him
00:04:21
[Music]
00:04:25
after olivia strata's disappearance
00:04:28
police released the photograph of the
00:04:29
unidentified man in the picture found in
00:04:32
her home
00:04:33
several callers identified the man as 47
00:04:37
year old martine gonzalez an illegal
00:04:40
immigrant from mexico who was working in
00:04:43
austin texas as a laborer
00:04:46
when questioned gonzales said he didn't
00:04:49
know anything about olivia's
00:04:51
disappearance
00:04:52
when he was searched however
00:04:54
investigators found the house key to
00:04:56
olivia estrada's home
00:04:59
at the time that mr gonzalez was picked
00:05:01
up he had
00:05:02
the only other key that anybody knew
00:05:04
existed in his pocket so that was a very
00:05:07
strong indicator that he was the last
00:05:09
one to leave that house which
00:05:11
would indicate that he had something to
00:05:12
do with her leaving
00:05:14
gonzalez said he had dated olivia
00:05:17
casually
00:05:18
but the last time he was at her home he
00:05:20
said she was there with another man
00:05:23
manuel barbosa
00:05:25
they ended up getting to a fight
00:05:27
emmanuel pulled a gun on him and he left
00:05:30
and martine left manual stay
00:05:34
but a check on barbosa's whereabouts
00:05:36
showed this was impossible
00:05:39
we checked out manuel and he happened to
00:05:41
be in federal custody and for
00:05:44
a long time
00:05:45
and was not any anywhere near austin
00:05:48
texas during that particular incident
00:05:52
investigators searched their criminal
00:05:54
database
00:05:55
they discovered that gonzales had spent
00:05:57
time in a mexican prison for murder
00:06:00
the first murder was a fake deal got a
00:06:03
man to meet him out in a desolate area
00:06:05
and beat him to death and took his money
00:06:07
when he got out of prison he killed
00:06:09
another person in mexico
00:06:11
and shortly thereafter came up here
00:06:14
to texas
00:06:16
and five months earlier gonzalez
00:06:18
reported another girlfriend missing
00:06:22
maria flores
00:06:24
so it was really starting to connect
00:06:25
that we were looking at more than one
00:06:28
missing woman involved
00:06:30
in his life
00:06:33
investigators called what's known as the
00:06:36
missing person's clearing house an
00:06:38
organization that tracks missing persons
00:06:40
reports with unidentified bodies found
00:06:43
in texas
00:06:45
and they found something
00:06:48
three years before maria flores and
00:06:50
olivia estrada disappeared another
00:06:53
woman's body was discovered in a field
00:06:56
just one block away from martine
00:06:59
gonzalez's home
00:07:01
that was a huge break i don't know that
00:07:03
that connection would have been made
00:07:04
without that call
00:07:07
so
00:07:08
who was
00:07:09
this person
00:07:13
forensic anthropologist dr david
00:07:15
glassman
00:07:16
examined the remains
00:07:18
he noted blunt force trauma to the skull
00:07:21
and most of the teeth were missing
00:07:25
the size of the skull indicated the
00:07:26
victim was female
00:07:28
and the cranial sutures revealed her
00:07:31
approximate age
00:07:33
there were some of the sutures in the
00:07:35
top of the head in the back of the head
00:07:36
that were already fused on the external
00:07:39
surface
00:07:40
so from that i ascertained that she
00:07:42
would have had to have been at least 35
00:07:44
years of age
00:07:46
dr glassman also found evidence of the
00:07:48
woman's race
00:07:50
she had a condition which is called
00:07:52
wormy and bones which are extra bones
00:07:54
found in the suture in the back of the
00:07:56
skull which we see very often in asians
00:07:59
and native americans
00:08:02
but without someone's dna or dental
00:08:04
records for comparison investigators had
00:08:07
no way to identify her
00:08:11
to put a face with the bones
00:08:13
investigators turned to forensic artist
00:08:16
karen taylor
00:08:18
since the skull was so fragile
00:08:21
taylor decided against creating a
00:08:23
forensic sculpture instead she used a
00:08:26
technique she had developed called
00:08:29
two-dimensional facial reconstruction
00:08:33
taylor assumed the victim was hispanic
00:08:35
and over 35 years old
00:08:38
using anthropologic data
00:08:40
taylor used rubber markers to show the
00:08:43
appropriate tissue thickness which
00:08:45
differs from race to race
00:08:47
[Music]
00:08:49
that forms a basis of the contours of
00:08:51
the face so once the tissue depth
00:08:53
markers are glued onto the skull
00:08:55
then we literally connect the dots to
00:08:58
develop the contours of the face
00:09:02
taylor then photographed the skull
00:09:04
and placed a piece of translucent vellum
00:09:07
on top of the picture
00:09:09
vellum is the finest type of parchment
00:09:12
available usually made from calves skin
00:09:16
taylor then started to draw the facial
00:09:19
features in life-size the average human
00:09:23
eye is about 25 millimeters in diameter
00:09:26
that happens to be about the same size
00:09:28
as the diameter of a us quarter
00:09:30
so i'll often take a quarter and center
00:09:33
it in the bony orbit of the skull and
00:09:35
trace around it
00:09:38
but the nose caused the most difficulty
00:09:41
since it's made of cartilage that
00:09:43
decomposes
00:09:46
i look at the piriform aperture this
00:09:48
pear-shaped
00:09:49
nasal opening
00:09:51
i had five millimeters on each side of
00:09:53
the the opening of the nose
00:09:55
and that gives me a sense of the width
00:09:58
the angle can often be determined by
00:10:00
analyzing the bone called the interior
00:10:04
nasal spine
00:10:05
we use that
00:10:07
to measure
00:10:08
and determine the projection of the nose
00:10:10
there's a formula of three times the
00:10:12
length of the nasal spine that is used
00:10:15
for that projection
00:10:17
since most of the teeth were missing
00:10:20
taylor relied on the principle known as
00:10:22
the facial triangle
00:10:24
there is an equilateral triangle created
00:10:27
between the two corners of the eye and
00:10:29
the middle of the bottom of the lower
00:10:31
lip and i thought aha that's going to
00:10:33
help me to project how the mouth might
00:10:37
have been positioned in that blank space
00:10:39
on the skull
00:10:41
taylor chose an appropriate hair color
00:10:44
and an approximate weight
00:10:46
then
00:10:47
put the finishing touches on her work
00:10:50
the incorporation of the proportional
00:10:52
arrangement of features in a face
00:10:55
is very important to the recognition
00:10:57
factor taking place
00:11:00
investigators released the forensic
00:11:02
drawing to the media hoping to learn her
00:11:05
identity
00:11:07
and in so doing
00:11:09
help solve a mystery
00:11:17
just days after the forensic drawing
00:11:19
appeared in the austin newspapers a
00:11:21
family member called from mexico to say
00:11:24
it looked like his mother 48 year old
00:11:27
sylvia garcia
00:11:30
she was none other
00:11:31
than martine gonzalez's wife
00:11:34
we got a call from sylvia's family
00:11:37
saying that their mother had married
00:11:39
him and had come up here and they'd
00:11:41
never seen him or heard from her again
00:11:44
or seen her again
00:11:46
court records indicated sylvia garcia
00:11:48
had filed for a divorce from gonzalez
00:11:50
shortly before her disappearance
00:11:54
when questioned gonzales denied having a
00:11:56
wife and denied even knowing sylvia
00:11:59
garcia
00:12:00
he just perfects ignorance and it was
00:12:02
unbelievable
00:12:05
but inside gonzalez's home
00:12:08
investigators found a photograph which
00:12:10
bore a striking resemblance to the
00:12:13
forensic drawing
00:12:15
and that's when i really got excited
00:12:17
because everything did seem to fit it
00:12:19
was what i would expect to see
00:12:22
the proportions were correct uh things
00:12:24
did seem to fit
00:12:26
once we got pictures
00:12:28
we were we were convinced
00:12:30
that that was sylvia is just proving it
00:12:32
was the next problem
00:12:35
to find out scientifically whether the
00:12:37
skull was sylvia garcia's
00:12:40
investigators discovered that sylvia
00:12:42
mailed letters to her relatives in
00:12:44
mexico and those letters might have
00:12:48
sylvia's dna profile
00:12:51
we looked at the envelope and saw that
00:12:53
in fact the flap had either been licked
00:12:55
or that the stamp had been licked and so
00:12:57
i attempted to extract dna from the flap
00:13:00
and from the stamp
00:13:02
and i was able to generate a dna profile
00:13:04
from the flap of the envelope
00:13:07
i think it's very fascinating and also
00:13:09
that her family would have saved those
00:13:11
envelopes i mean how how many people
00:13:12
save letters that somebody sent a couple
00:13:14
of years ago and who would have thought
00:13:16
that it would help solve a police
00:13:18
investigation it's just it's just
00:13:20
unbelievable
00:13:22
for comparison criminalist jody kohler
00:13:25
used tooth pulp found in one of the few
00:13:28
molars still in the skull
00:13:30
tooth pulp can be a rich source of dna
00:13:35
a pcr dna test revealed the skull
00:13:37
matched the dna extracted from sylvia's
00:13:40
letters
00:13:42
damn that was good you know you just
00:13:44
never expected that to happen you hear
00:13:46
it can happen it just had never happened
00:13:48
for me until then
00:13:50
i was very excited that we had actually
00:13:51
identified this person because the
00:13:54
skeletal remains were fairly old and so
00:13:56
it was it was really a shot in the dark
00:13:58
to be able to do this it was great
00:14:00
when investigators re-examined the bed
00:14:03
sheet that covered sylvia's body
00:14:06
they noticed a single strand of hair in
00:14:08
the knot
00:14:10
since there was no root material
00:14:12
investigators decided to perform a
00:14:15
mitochondrial dna test
00:14:17
now the unique difference with
00:14:19
mitochondrial dna is it's only inherited
00:14:21
from your mother
00:14:23
and so men don't pass theirs on to their
00:14:26
children this means that siblings in the
00:14:29
same family or all maternal relatives in
00:14:31
a family for example will share the same
00:14:33
type
00:14:35
the hair was first cleaned in an
00:14:37
ultrasonic water bath to make sure no
00:14:40
cells from another source adhered to it
00:14:43
once the hair is thoroughly cleaned then
00:14:46
we grind it up in a small glass grinder
00:14:49
that is almost like a mortar and pestle
00:14:51
apparatus
00:14:52
this powders the hair into a liquid
00:14:55
buffer
00:14:56
and to this are added some chemicals
00:14:59
that effectively purify the dna
00:15:02
away from everything else in the hair
00:15:06
and this same procedure was repeated on
00:15:08
a hair sample from
00:15:10
martine gonzalez
00:15:13
the result
00:15:14
the hair found with sylvia garcia's body
00:15:18
belonged to martine gonzalez
00:15:22
if you find a type that's never been
00:15:24
seen before as was the case in this case
00:15:27
you would be able to eliminate at least
00:15:30
99.96 percent
00:15:32
of north americans as having that type
00:15:35
his hair being
00:15:37
with the remains was crucial to show
00:15:38
that he was involved in her ending up in
00:15:41
that vacant field with with trauma to
00:15:43
the head
00:15:45
martine gonzalez was arrested and
00:15:48
charged with sylvia garcia's murder
00:15:52
but the question remained
00:15:55
where were the other two missing women
00:15:58
olivia estrada and maria flores
00:16:06
when martine gonzalez was in prison
00:16:09
awaiting trial for the murder of his
00:16:10
wife sylvia garcia
00:16:12
investigators received a telephone call
00:16:16
the farmer actually is a retired
00:16:18
detective was clearing some area for a
00:16:20
fence
00:16:21
and he stumbled onto some bones
00:16:25
in bastrop county
00:16:27
dental records confirmed the remains
00:16:30
were those of olivia estrada
00:16:32
the 54 year old divorcee who was dating
00:16:35
martine gonzalez around the time of her
00:16:37
disappearance
00:16:39
the skull showed signs of blunt force
00:16:42
trauma
00:16:43
as well as a gunshot wound
00:16:46
i mean i still didn't really believe it
00:16:48
and i said detective morrow is it her is
00:16:50
it really her and he says yes
00:16:52
and he and he had a tear in his eye
00:16:55
less than a mile away
00:16:57
in another deserted field
00:17:00
investigators found the remains of the
00:17:02
third missing woman maria flores
00:17:06
she had also been dating martine
00:17:08
gonzalez
00:17:10
and it was he who reported her missing
00:17:14
her skull showed evidence of blunt force
00:17:17
trauma to the head
00:17:19
martine gonzalez was charged with all
00:17:22
three murders
00:17:24
we had mitochondrial dna which had never
00:17:27
been used in texas at that point we had
00:17:29
other kinds of dna forensic
00:17:31
anthropologists
00:17:32
forensic dentists a multitude of
00:17:35
civilian and law enforcement witnesses
00:17:37
many of which were spanish speakers and
00:17:39
the logistics of putting that case
00:17:41
together were
00:17:42
astounding
00:17:45
prosecutors learned that gonzales
00:17:47
frequented bars where he met vulnerable
00:17:50
women some were illegal immigrants with
00:17:53
no family or connection to austin
00:17:57
others like olivia estrada were
00:18:00
emotionally vulnerable
00:18:02
she still loved my father i think she
00:18:04
was just down on herself
00:18:05
i really believe when she met him she
00:18:08
was at her lowest
00:18:10
that is the only way i could see that
00:18:11
she would ever let
00:18:13
a person like nothing
00:18:15
in her life
00:18:17
this man had a history of abusing women
00:18:19
and charming them and choosing isolated
00:18:22
women or most of them isolated and and
00:18:24
then lying to them saying he owned land
00:18:26
and becoming jealous and possessive
00:18:28
[Music]
00:18:30
prosecutors presented evidence that the
00:18:32
motive in these murders was anger after
00:18:35
having been rejected
00:18:37
gonzalez refused to accept that these
00:18:39
women no longer wanted him in their
00:18:41
lives
00:18:42
[Music]
00:18:44
gonzalez's telephone conversation with
00:18:46
olivia's daughter revealed he wanted to
00:18:48
marry olivia
00:18:50
but olivia told her daughter later she
00:18:52
wanted no part of him
00:18:56
i said mom what is he talking about he
00:18:58
says he's going to marry she goes he's
00:18:59
crazy
00:19:01
i said i'm telling you what he just told
00:19:02
me
00:19:03
she says no he's crazy don't pay
00:19:05
attention to him he doesn't know what
00:19:06
he's talking about i'm like mom what are
00:19:08
you doing
00:19:11
it wasn't long after this incident
00:19:14
that olivia disappeared
00:19:18
in september 2000
00:19:21
martine gonzalez was convicted of three
00:19:24
counts of first degree murder and
00:19:26
sentenced to the life in prison
00:19:29
you left her you threw her away like she
00:19:31
was garbage
00:19:33
she wasn't martin
00:19:35
she was not
00:19:37
she was my mother
00:19:38
his eyes
00:19:40
are just void of any kind of human
00:19:43
anything there's nothing there nothing
00:19:46
that's human anyway to me
00:19:48
it's just a monster
00:19:50
he's just a truly evil person with no
00:19:53
conscience
00:19:55
i wish he was sitting on death row
00:19:56
instead but he needs to be behind bars
00:19:59
for the rest of his life
00:20:02
to this day
00:20:03
texas authorities remain convinced there
00:20:06
are other victims linked to martine
00:20:08
gonzalez victims
00:20:10
they have yet to find
00:20:13
without the forensic drawing
00:20:16
investigators wouldn't have identified
00:20:18
the skull found in the field
00:20:22
i don't think he had
00:20:23
any any perception of forensic art in
00:20:27
his entire imagination but i bet he
00:20:29
wishes he did
00:20:31
it's just amazing that we can combine
00:20:33
those types of science where she can do
00:20:35
the facial reconstruction and then we
00:20:36
can confirm her facial reconstruction
00:20:39
using this type of dna technology
00:20:42
an anthropologist friend of mine dr
00:20:43
william maples was fond of saying
00:20:46
patient and silent while we live our
00:20:48
skeletons shout to heaven and posterity
00:20:51
after we die and i think that's a
00:20:54
wonderful um a wonderful quote it it
00:20:57
says the same thing
00:20:59
the dead can speak
00:21:01
through facial reconstruction through
00:21:02
forensic art
