Forensic Files - Season 6, Episode 16 - Skin of Her Teeth - Full Episode

November 24, 2021 / 22:35

This episode covers the discovery of a human skull in Linden Lake, Ohio, by two boys in 1996, and the subsequent investigation into the identity of the victim, Tina Mott. Key discussions include the forensic analysis conducted by Dr. Beth Murray, who identified the skull as belonging to a Caucasian woman under 35 years old, and the brutal methods used to conceal her identity.

The episode details the background of Tina Mott, a single mother who went missing two months before the skull was found. Her boyfriend, Tim Bradford, became a prime suspect after police discovered evidence linking him to her disappearance, including blood in their apartment and a collection of knives.

Forensic techniques, including mitochondrial DNA testing, ultimately confirmed that the skull belonged to Tina Mott. The episode recounts Bradford's confession to the murder, describing the violent altercation that led to her death and the gruesome dismemberment of her body.

The investigation highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving the case, emphasizing the importance of small clues that led to the recovery of Tina's remains and the eventual conviction of Tim Bradford for voluntary manslaughter.

This case serves as a reminder of the complexities of domestic violence and the lengths some individuals will go to conceal their crimes.

TL;DR

Two boys find a skull in Ohio, leading to the discovery of a brutal murder case involving Tina Mott and her boyfriend Tim Bradford.

hamilton ohio is an industrial city of
00:01:01
about 62 000 people in the southwestern
00:01:04
part of the state
00:01:07
it's an area blessed with natural beauty
00:01:11
residents enjoyed the many rivers
00:01:13
streams and lakes that dot the landscape
00:01:18
on august 7 1996
00:01:21
12 year old tim lyons and his friend tj
00:01:25
dijon headed to linden lake for an
00:01:27
afternoon of fishing
00:01:32
but instead of a bluegill or catfish
00:01:35
the boys reeled in what looked like a
00:01:38
skull
00:01:40
it's hard to believe that you find
00:01:42
somebody's head down there that you're
00:01:45
just
00:01:46
fishing and mind your own business and
00:01:47
you reel in somebody's head they're just
00:01:50
unbelievable
00:01:52
the boys left the skull on the bank
00:01:55
uncertain of what to do
00:01:58
i know my mom and dad they didn't
00:02:00
believe me they thought i was just
00:02:01
goofing off
00:02:03
like a whole day passed before we even
00:02:06
we went back down there and it was still
00:02:07
there
00:02:08
this time
00:02:10
the boys contacted the police
00:02:13
first cop down there was
00:02:15
pretty much a prick he came down there
00:02:17
and we were showing him and everything
00:02:19
he threw a rocket and said yeah it's
00:02:21
real now you guys have opened up a big
00:02:22
investigation just kept going on and on
00:02:24
and like we did something wrong
00:02:26
20 minutes later the whole police force
00:02:28
was down there
00:02:30
and they had
00:02:31
boats and everything people scooped it
00:02:33
down there searching for
00:02:35
other clues and
00:02:37
it was crazy went
00:02:38
nuts from there
00:02:40
the police scuba divers could not find
00:02:43
any other body parts in the lake and the
00:02:45
search of the immediate area was also
00:02:48
fruitless
00:02:49
the local coroner examined the skull and
00:02:52
determined that the individual hadn't
00:02:55
been in the lake long perhaps only a few
00:02:58
weeks because there was still some soft
00:03:01
tissue clinging to it
00:03:03
but investigators were faced with a
00:03:05
mystery
00:03:07
you know when we have a skull
00:03:09
turn up what does that tell you
00:03:11
it doesn't really tell you a whole lot
00:03:13
it could be that somebody robbed a grave
00:03:15
out in the country and then got rid of
00:03:18
parts of the body
00:03:20
it could be a homeless person who
00:03:23
passed away and part of the remains got
00:03:25
dragged
00:03:26
you know an animal a varmint dragged
00:03:28
part of the remains someplace so it
00:03:30
doesn't really tell you that there's a
00:03:32
homicide or foul play
00:03:34
who was this person
00:03:37
how did he or she die
00:03:40
and where was the rest of the body
00:03:45
to assist in the identification the
00:03:47
coroner sent the skull to the college of
00:03:49
mount saint joseph outside cincinnati to
00:03:52
dr beth murray one of only 63
00:03:56
board-certified forensic anthropologists
00:03:59
in the united states
00:04:01
this case was one of the most
00:04:03
challenging
00:04:04
fascinating
00:04:06
personally rewarding but also
00:04:09
at the same time personally terrifying
00:04:11
cases that i think i've worked
00:04:14
dr murray noticed a deep indentation on
00:04:17
the top of the skull
00:04:20
which suggested the killer used a
00:04:21
machete or a cleaver on the top of the
00:04:24
victim's head
00:04:26
and dr murray found other cuts and
00:04:28
scratches all over the skull
00:04:31
and they were signs of trying to get the
00:04:33
flesh off of the skull
00:04:34
and it gave me chills to realize that
00:04:37
someone had sat with this skull in their
00:04:39
hands and defleshed it this skull had a
00:04:42
nose cavity indicative of a caucasian
00:04:46
a battery of nearly two dozen
00:04:48
measurements fed into a computer program
00:04:50
confirmed this was the skull of a woman
00:04:54
dr murray estimated that the victim was
00:04:56
under 35 years of age
00:04:59
the sutures of the skull the
00:05:02
lines where the individual skull bones
00:05:04
knit together
00:05:05
those were still very open and they
00:05:08
typically will tend to close with age
00:05:10
evidence suggested
00:05:12
someone had used many different types of
00:05:15
tools in an extraordinary effort to
00:05:18
conceal the woman's identity
00:05:21
a series of jagged parallel marks
00:05:24
indicated a serrated knife the size of a
00:05:27
kitchen steak knife had been dragged
00:05:29
along the sides of the skull
00:05:32
cut marks on the cheekbones indicated
00:05:34
the jaw had been forcefully removed with
00:05:37
a small single edged blade like a pocket
00:05:40
knife and there were several puncture
00:05:43
wounds in the eye sockets an indication
00:05:46
that the killer removed the victim's
00:05:48
eyes
00:05:49
the teeth were also missing
00:05:52
in the upper jaw
00:05:54
was a broken tooth root
00:05:56
which told dr murray that the teeth had
00:05:59
been deliberately pulled
00:06:02
and when you held the skull at just the
00:06:03
right angle you could see that the
00:06:05
weapon that was used was a needle nose
00:06:07
pliers you could actually see marks in
00:06:08
the bone where the pliers had been
00:06:10
inserted and the teeth snapped out
00:06:13
dr murray hesitated to tell homicide
00:06:15
investigators about her suspicions
00:06:18
and i thought
00:06:20
they're not going to believe me
00:06:22
they're not going to believe that this
00:06:23
is true
00:06:24
and so i took the skull to two other
00:06:26
experts before i made that phone call
00:06:29
because i had never seen anything like
00:06:31
this before in my life
00:06:33
it would be the most difficult murder
00:06:35
investigation local officials had ever
00:06:38
encountered
00:06:45
although investigators knew the skull
00:06:48
found in linden lake was that of a
00:06:50
caucasian woman under the age of 35 they
00:06:53
knew nothing else
00:06:55
marks found on the skull indicated that
00:06:57
the flesh had been removed as had her
00:07:00
teeth in an attempt to hide the woman's
00:07:03
identity
00:07:04
i've seen a lot of
00:07:06
criminals try to hide their crime and
00:07:09
conceal their activity
00:07:12
it's almost expected
00:07:14
but i've never seen anybody go to
00:07:16
this length
00:07:18
of activity
00:07:20
to conceal a crime
00:07:22
hamilton police discovered that only
00:07:24
four individuals had recently been
00:07:26
reported missing one was 21 year old
00:07:30
tina mott
00:07:31
reported missing just two months before
00:07:33
the skull was found in the lake
00:07:36
tina mott was the single mother of an 18
00:07:39
month old son johnny she had been living
00:07:42
here on a quiet residential street in an
00:07:44
upstairs apartment with her 24 year old
00:07:47
boyfriend tim bradford
00:07:50
tinamott was originally from new york
00:07:53
she met her boyfriend tim while she was
00:07:55
selling magazines door to door they
00:07:58
settled in tim's home town of hamilton
00:08:01
where tina worked as a clerk at a local
00:08:03
store tim was a framer at this art shop
00:08:07
he was he was in his mid-20s so he
00:08:10
pretty much enjoyed doing the things
00:08:13
that people in their mid-20s like to do
00:08:16
go out hang out with friends
00:08:18
go to concerts things like that
00:08:21
when questioned by police
00:08:23
tim said the tina had gone back to new
00:08:26
york to visit her family and left the
00:08:29
baby behind
00:08:31
police soon discovered that tina mott
00:08:34
never reached new york
00:08:36
tina was reported missing not by her
00:08:39
family but by tim's mother
00:08:42
elizabeth bradford
00:08:44
so at first she didn't really think
00:08:46
anything about it but then when she
00:08:47
started calling new york to see if she
00:08:48
was up there and she wasn't
00:08:52
she knew she wasn't
00:08:54
away on her own will because she knew
00:08:56
she wouldn't leave the baby alone
00:08:59
elizabeth bradford also told police she
00:09:01
was afraid of her son and his temper
00:09:05
armed with a warrant
00:09:07
police searched the storage locker
00:09:09
bradford rented shortly after tina
00:09:11
disappeared
00:09:13
inside
00:09:14
they found this set of 19 kitchen knives
00:09:18
with small medium and large serrated
00:09:22
blades police also found a book on how
00:09:25
to kill
00:09:26
with your bare hands
00:09:28
and a notebook on satanic rituals
00:09:32
tim bradford's mother told police her
00:09:34
son practiced devil worship
00:09:37
also suspicious was tim bradford's
00:09:40
behavior during tina's disappearance
00:09:43
an atm security camera captured pictures
00:09:46
showing tim bradford withdrawing money
00:09:49
from tinamot's bank account after she
00:09:52
disappeared
00:09:54
investigators also learned that tim
00:09:56
bradford occasionally used drugs
00:09:59
we know from some statements that tina
00:10:02
supposedly had told people she worked
00:10:03
with that she was afraid of tim because
00:10:06
of his drug usage now i'm speculating
00:10:08
here but i think what that means is is
00:10:10
that when he's using drugs
00:10:12
his violent temper is a little bit more
00:10:15
flammable you know that he erupts a
00:10:17
little bit quicker has a shorter fuse
00:10:18
and maybe that's why she's afraid of him
00:10:21
next
00:10:22
police searched the couple's apartment
00:10:25
inside they conducted a luminol test
00:10:29
a chemical is sprayed on a surface it
00:10:31
can reveal blood that has been cleaned
00:10:34
up with water and detergents
00:10:37
on the living room carpet
00:10:39
investigators found an area believed to
00:10:41
be human blood
00:10:42
they also found blood on the bathroom
00:10:45
floor in the crevice between the floor
00:10:48
and the tub
00:10:49
and also
00:10:51
near the toilet
00:10:52
police suspected the linden lake skull
00:10:56
was that of tinamot
00:10:58
but they needed scientific proof to be
00:11:01
certain
00:11:05
when a human skull was recovered from
00:11:07
linden lake in ohio investigators needed
00:11:10
to find some forensic technique to make
00:11:12
a conclusive identification
00:11:15
the most effective means of
00:11:17
identification
00:11:18
is by analyzing the teeth of the victim
00:11:21
and comparing those to known dental
00:11:24
x-rays since no two sets of teeth are
00:11:27
exactly alike
00:11:29
but in this case
00:11:31
the lower jaw of the skull was missing
00:11:33
and the upper teeth had all been pulled
00:11:38
another method of identification is
00:11:40
called skull photograph superimposition
00:11:45
an anthropologist takes a photograph of
00:11:47
the skull
00:11:48
then
00:11:49
superimposes it over a photograph of the
00:11:52
missing person in hopes of matching the
00:11:54
facial characteristics
00:11:58
other techniques attempt to put a face
00:12:00
on the skull by using facial
00:12:03
reconstruction and forensic sculpture
00:12:06
[Music]
00:12:07
forensic
00:12:09
have had only a 70
00:12:12
success rate with these techniques
00:12:14
because features like the eyelids the
00:12:16
mouth lips and ears are not necessarily
00:12:20
indicated by the shape of the skull
00:12:22
it's a technique usually used when all
00:12:25
other means of identification have
00:12:27
failed
00:12:29
but in the case of the linden lake skull
00:12:32
scientists got a genetic break
00:12:35
they discovered that the killer removed
00:12:38
all but two of the wisdom teeth which
00:12:41
had been embedded in the gum which the
00:12:43
killer may not have seen
00:12:45
when the perpetrator pulled the teeth
00:12:47
he didn't realize that those molars were
00:12:49
up underneath the gum line so those were
00:12:52
protected and preserved
00:12:54
dr murray extracted tooth pulp from the
00:12:57
wisdom teeth and sent it for dna testing
00:13:00
along with a blood sample from tina's 18
00:13:02
month old son
00:13:05
but scientists could not obtain a usable
00:13:07
dna profile from the tooth pulp it's
00:13:10
possible that the reason is that the
00:13:13
teeth were still unformed and when teeth
00:13:16
are still forming their roots are open
00:13:19
open cavities it was also possible the
00:13:23
tiny single cell microorganisms in the
00:13:26
lake called diatoms damaged or altered
00:13:29
the cells in the tooth pulp
00:13:33
as a last resort
00:13:35
dr murray tried to extract dna from the
00:13:37
skull itself with a surgical drill
00:13:41
she carefully removed six bone samples
00:13:45
from the thickest part of the skull with
00:13:48
sterile techniques the middle section of
00:13:50
that core that i took out had never
00:13:52
touched anything but that sterile drill
00:13:55
the skull bone fragments were sent for
00:13:57
mitochondrial dna testing which is used
00:14:00
in cases where the biological sample is
00:14:03
either degraded or small in quantity
00:14:07
and the mitochondrial dna is unique
00:14:09
because it is passed through the
00:14:11
maternal bloodline you receive it only
00:14:13
from your mother so any maternal
00:14:15
relative you have can be tested against
00:14:18
the sample
00:14:20
mitochondria are found in the cell
00:14:22
cytoplasm outside the nucleus
00:14:25
each cell contains hundreds of
00:14:28
mitochondria
00:14:29
[Music]
00:14:30
scientists have isolated two regions of
00:14:32
the mitochondrial dna where differences
00:14:35
within the human population appear and
00:14:38
they will look for exact matches between
00:14:41
the mitochondrial dna and the sample
00:14:43
they have and the maternal blood
00:14:44
relative that they have
00:14:46
the mitochondrial dna from the skull was
00:14:49
the same as the mitochondrial dna from
00:14:52
18 month old johnny mott which meant
00:14:55
the skull was that of his mother tina
00:15:01
and one of the long knives found in the
00:15:04
storage shed rented by tina's live-in
00:15:06
boyfriend tested positive for human
00:15:10
protein
00:15:12
with this news
00:15:13
police brought tim bradford in for
00:15:16
questioning once more
00:15:18
i asked him if he knew how to hunt yes
00:15:21
did you know how to
00:15:22
to dissect an animal and skin it
00:15:25
prepared for food yes how to dispose of
00:15:28
the
00:15:29
internals
00:15:30
of an animal yes he learned that all
00:15:33
through his childhood and upbringing
00:15:35
finally
00:15:37
tim bradford told police a story of
00:15:40
almost unspeakable violence and horror
00:15:44
it was the story
00:15:45
of tina mott's last moments alive
00:15:54
when dna testing concluded that the
00:15:57
linden lake skull was out of tinamot
00:16:00
police confronted her live-in boyfriend
00:16:02
tim bradford with the forensic evidence
00:16:04
against him
00:16:06
after several hours bradford confessed
00:16:09
[Music]
00:16:12
bradford led investigators to a nature
00:16:15
preserve less than a mile from where the
00:16:17
couple lived
00:16:18
and in the deep brush
00:16:20
were tina's bones
00:16:22
scattered throughout the area
00:16:26
after 14 months
00:16:28
animals had gotten to the remains and
00:16:31
only about half of tina's body was
00:16:33
recovered
00:16:35
every bone found had been cut either by
00:16:39
a hacksaw or a knife
00:16:43
tim said that on the night of the murder
00:16:45
he and tina were playing a game of
00:16:47
monopoly
00:16:48
bradford admitted using drugs that night
00:16:51
at some point the couple got into an
00:16:53
argument tempers flared and tim admitted
00:16:56
hitting tina bloodying her nose
00:17:00
tina went to the bathroom to clean up
00:17:02
and bradford said he started to put away
00:17:04
the fishing gear he had used earlier in
00:17:06
the day
00:17:08
bradford said tina came running out of
00:17:10
the bathroom to continue the argument
00:17:13
bradford said he had a fish fillet knife
00:17:15
in his hand
00:17:16
and in the ensuing scuffle tim admitted
00:17:20
that he slipped tina's throat
00:17:23
bradford said he left the apartment
00:17:26
and when he returned
00:17:28
tina's lifeless body was in the bathtub
00:17:32
how she got there was a mystery to him
00:17:36
bradford said he worked through the
00:17:37
night to dismember the body
00:17:40
he flushed her internal organs
00:17:43
down the toilet it's unbelievable that a
00:17:46
human
00:17:47
can do this to another human that he
00:17:49
loved and fathered a child with
00:17:51
i cannot grasp that
00:17:54
bradford admitted using each of the 19
00:17:58
kitchen knives in the process
00:18:01
and bradford confirmed using needle nose
00:18:03
pliers to remove the teeth in an effort
00:18:06
to prevent a dental identification of
00:18:08
the remains
00:18:10
cut into the flesh to begin with is hard
00:18:12
enough then to cut the head off hold it
00:18:15
in my arms or my hands
00:18:17
and pull the teeth out
00:18:19
it's unbelievable
00:18:21
bradford carried the bones from the
00:18:23
apartment in his backpack and in a trash
00:18:26
bag to a deserted field
00:18:29
where he dumped them
00:18:31
later he said
00:18:32
he went to linden lake
00:18:35
and threw the skull into the water
00:18:41
if that skull never appeared
00:18:44
this case would have never been solved
00:18:47
it would have never proceeded as a
00:18:49
homicide i'd just gone down as a missing
00:18:51
person
00:18:52
and been in missing persons forever
00:18:55
townspeople were stunned by the news
00:18:58
bradford's former boss couldn't believe
00:19:00
she had worked side by side with a
00:19:03
cold-blooded killer
00:19:05
he did
00:19:07
he did want out of that relationship
00:19:09
with tina
00:19:10
and unfortunately he picked a very
00:19:13
permanent way out of that relationship
00:19:16
and
00:19:18
he's also out of his son's
00:19:20
life as well
00:19:22
which is a real shame
00:19:26
tim bradford had no explanation for why
00:19:29
he killed tina other than to say he
00:19:32
loved her and was sorry
00:19:35
tim bradford was convicted of voluntary
00:19:38
manslaughter and of abuse of a corpse
00:19:42
he was sentenced to 12 to 25 years in
00:19:45
prison
00:19:47
tim bradford acknowledged his guilt in
00:19:50
this exclusive letter he wrote to the
00:19:52
producers of this program
00:19:55
bradford says quote
00:19:58
i have committed an atrocity in the eyes
00:20:00
of god and of man and for that i accept
00:20:04
full responsibility
00:20:06
my actions belie my true feelings for
00:20:09
tina
00:20:10
i truly loved her with every fiber of my
00:20:13
being
00:20:14
end quote
00:20:16
bradford claims the pain of his own
00:20:19
actions go well beyond those imposed by
00:20:21
his prison sentence
00:20:23
quote
00:20:25
the nightmares i have had since that
00:20:27
night
00:20:28
the dreams i have where i wake up with
00:20:31
tina's name on my lips those will stay
00:20:34
with me forever
00:20:36
and they should
00:20:38
it is a burden i must carry in my heart
00:20:41
until the end of my days in this case mr
00:20:44
brantford the way he treated the corpse
00:20:47
of the person that he supposedly loved
00:20:50
tells you that they're almost that
00:20:51
there's almost two parts to this person
00:20:54
one where he really loves this woman and
00:20:56
can't deal with the fact of losing her
00:20:58
and wants to talk about what he did to
00:21:00
her because he feels guilty about it but
00:21:03
another side of him that could detach
00:21:05
himself from all emotion to lean over a
00:21:08
bathtub and de-flesh
00:21:11
the body of somebody that you love it's
00:21:13
just humanly impossible
00:21:16
if he could do this to somebody that he
00:21:17
loves what could he do to somebody that
00:21:19
he doesn't even know or doesn't care
00:21:21
about
00:21:22
i just hope
00:21:24
that
00:21:25
through
00:21:26
law enforcement officers and young
00:21:28
detectives maybe seeing this case be
00:21:31
aired that they realize don't give up
00:21:34
you know when you get these little clues
00:21:36
and when you have gut
00:21:38
instincts telling you something's not
00:21:39
right keep on pushing the envelope a
00:21:42
little bit keep on going after the
00:21:44
evidence because that's what happened in
00:21:46
this case and it resulted in us walking
00:21:48
through a field and maybe we got our
00:21:50
shoes all muddy and got a little dirtied
00:21:51
and everything but
00:21:53
we found the last of her remains and
00:21:55
were able to put a final conclusion to
00:21:57
this case and i'm very proud
00:21:59
to be a part of that quite frankly
